Delft Bicycle Field Trip Experiencing Dutch Cycling monuments and culture
A course mixing together ingredients from the Dutch cycling tradition! This 4-hour field trip takes place in Delft, a pioneering cycling city. It is not just a bike tour. It is a training session to help city planners, traffic engineers, economic development officials, city council members, researchers and others to develop their own unique cycling traditions at home.

Programme and activities Delft, a pioneering cycling city Delft has around 100’000 inhabitants. It has a historical pedestrian and cyclist centre and is a university townhome to the Technical University of Delft. Delft is not just the location of our head office, it is a town that has been a pioneer in urban cycling since the revival of two-wheeled transportation in the 1970s. Yes, that is correct, Dutch cities and towns also had to make big changes to get where we are today. Our approach is to share this success story with visitors to inspire them in developing new policy, planning and design approaches at home.

We will help you figure this out in our 4-hour course in wich you experience the history and new challenges in 7 lessons to take home. We organize the field trip in 3 sections: 1. A step back in the history Delft traffic calming history is not new. On this map from 1652, bollards have be installed to prevent horse carriages to access some streets.
Delft,
The Netherlands
The tour Points of interest Points of interest on the route include the incorporation of cycling into the old town and connections between the cycling network and more recent urban developments. The first residential zones (“woonerf”) were developed and implemented in Delft in the 1970’s. Other developments were built later and show how Dutch principles have been applied in various periods over the last decades.
Our guides Angela van der Kloof Angela is a project developer, speaker and trainer specialized in cycling planning, education and engagement. She works on cycling in the international context for more than 20 years and is looking forward to let you experience Dutch cycling infrastructure and culture. Dick van Veen Dick is a traffic engineer and city planner who is an enthusiastic coach and trainer. Working in both the Netherlands and abroad, Dick has good understanding of what makes the Dutch road system function so well and how to translate these principles to a foreign situation. Simon Fessard Simon is an urban system engineer who has worked in urban and landscape planning and recently cycled across Europe.
Training style We will challenge you! Participants will be actively engaged in the field trip, not just following a guide. By sharing experiences, participants not only learn from guides but also from their fellow participants and from the environment. This field trip is an opportunity to see people-friendly spaces in action. Our team believes that one learns more from a ground tour. Therefore, not surprisingly the tour takes place on the bike. The group rides to selected key locations in Delft, makes several stops along the way and finally discusses the afternoon’s experiences over a coffee.
