It’s hard to believe this quiet square was once a main thoroughfare bisecting Wolvega.

In the spaces we visited, elderly and disabled people, children and everyone else could travel safely (even when being trailed by a lorry) because the design forced motorized vehicles to slow down.

$ $ ! ! ! ! #& ! ) ! )tted with a tree-lined promenade and a small square. The square turned out to be an invitation to business and now is ringed by restaurants that use the former street space for outdoor seating. The intersection is a shared space safe enough for children to ride through on bikes. 8

Here’s a look at the details that made the designs work, including an enlarged speed hump signaling entrance to a downgraded road, a ! ! ! ! !( ! ! ! # # *ower beds used to narrow a street.
