UEA STUDENT power took to the streets on Tuesday, November 10, with protesters blockading Shell premises in and around Norwich. During the demonstration students and other ecoprotestors targeted the Shell garage on Unthank Road , resulting in just five customers using the petrol station during the morning rush. And in a simultaneous action , demonstrators forced the company's depot, on Norwich's outer ring-road , to cease business for the day. The demonstrations were timed to coincide with the third anniversary of the Nigerian government's execution of poet and playwright, Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight fellow countrymen. The executed dissidents had been outspoken critics of the role of oil companies in Nigeria, including Shell , accusing them of damaging the environment and colluding with the military. Among the Norwich demonstrators was Ail i Pyhala (ENV 4), who hailed the protest as a success. Said Aili, "We wanted to achieve two main things - to Shell's prote st against involvement in Nigeria and also to ask people sitting in their cars to boycott the petrol station . "We didn't expect so many people to turn out - but there were actually about 25 and we
