crew, who also promote club nights at The Waterfront and The Loft.

ellooo! Welcome to my very own column, a veritable oasis (no pun intended) of pop frolics. I'm Cazza, and armed only with a Barbie doll and a keen ear for celebrity tomfoolery, I shall be endeavouring to bring you all the best popgoss every fortnight come rain or shine (like the Five Star song ... ah, the good old days).
Cull Capers! You can't have failed to notice that Ant and (swoon!) Dec have finally killed off their alteregos PJ and Duncan . "And about time too!" a weary nation.
And with that thought, I shall bid you farewell. Cya in a fortnight!

However, they have now replaced them with the slightly sinister sounding 'Cult of Ant and Dec', their own personal mission to bring pop and happiness to the youth of the nation. This seems to involve getting people to dress up in masks of the dynamic duo and recite the lyrics of U Krazy Katz at the breakfast table each and every morning. And they're not just hoping to convert us pop kids either; Alan Shearer is top of their 'Most Wanted' list. "He's a footy god!" they dribble. Only 'cos he's jointed Newcastle United methinks. As well as changing their pop image, there are also big changes afoot in their blossoming TV careers. After the furore over their comments about Blue Peter's Katy Hill on The Ant and Dec Show, they've moved over to Channel 4 in a deal that's rumoured to be around £500,000. Plus they're moving to an early evening slot; so expect more gratuitous violence and sex! (I wish ...)

collection of Japanese lub pop", reads the lbum cover which, let's face it, sounds pretty damn cool already. The bands included on this compilation serve up an amazing hybrid of western and eastern cultures. Selecting only the finest ingredients from the AngloAmerican pop stranglehold (such as Bacharach, Stereolab, the Muppets theme tune) and infusing with a Japanese spirit, the artists have shown us a thing or two about style, charm, elegance and wit.
COLLAPtii!D UNG BoaPdGame/r 'm not too sure why Collapsed Lung don't seem to receive the praise that other (equally deserving) British hip-hop acts get. Whilst Black Twang and The Brotherhood are lauded, Collapsed Lung seem to be virtually ignored. Whether it be the fact that they have their roots in the (whisper it now) indie charts, or the fact that they don't follow the rules set out by America,
I
ord is that this band are destined for good (note: not 'great') things. Can't really see it myself though. Maybe this is due to the fact that I can't seem to get past the inclusion of embarrassingly twee nonphrases such as "hyperedifice· or "ephemera·, or the fact that the singer sounds like the sort of irritating sloaney ponce who's "Oh, so tewwibly, tewwibly twoubled." This band sound so
W
damn middle class, so damn parochial, that when they sing of "monsters crumbling", you're sure that it's just because Daddy's sent them a nice fat cheque. In short then, this sounds like the sort of sludge that indie should've left behind at least four years ago. I shudder at the memory of All About Eve, shoegazing and those horrible petticoat things that indie girls used to think looked good as skirts. Eughh. are unknowns, but there are one or two familiar names: Pizzicato Five and Towa Tei of Dee-Ute fame (recording under the guise of SP 1200 Productions) contribute two of the album's top tunes. Yet most of the album's potential lies in the work of the unknown performers such as Les 5-4-3-2-1 , whose song combines the guitar line from Stereolab's Ping Pong with a whistled rendition of Burt Bacharach's Bond Street. Everything included is cool, from easy listening and disco to techno. Japan's finest have created their own little Godzilla of a record.
I'm not too sure. But, yet again, they've delivered a fine single. Not excellent. But by no means generic, or copyist or even remotely dull. The lead track gets the remix treatment from the Ballistic Brothers (absolute class electro hip-hop) and Avenue-A (formerly Ceasefire). Not necessarily top of the list in terms of credibility, but I'd always pick tunes above reputations.

EMMA (U) UK (1996) Corsetted classic Dir: Douglas McGrath Cinema City from Sept 23 f you didn't get enough Jane Austen with Emmy Thompson's Sense and Sensibility, then check out this new adaptation of the classic novel Emma . Gwyneth Paltrow stars in the lead role as the film follows the heroine Emma Woodhouse as she concocts various manipulative schemes regarding the romantic attachments of others. She focuses her misguided attention on Harnet Smith (Toni Collette of Muriel's Wedding fame} and tries to establish Harriet with an array of eligible bachelors from the neighbourhood, meanwhile Emma herself is set to fall for the dashing Frank Churchill (Ewan McGregor) who is nevertheless secretly engaged to the beautiful Jane Fairfax. The heroine finally gets her comeuppance and is married to the staid Mr Knightly who has been her mentor throughout. Touching, but above all incredibly funny, Emma will leave you with the most warm and fuzzy feeling of the year.

his Autumn witnesses yet another film release filled with girlies in the demi-nude. Take one top Hollywood star, add some baby oil and a skimpy outfit and you've got the recipe for a success, no matter what the crappy story line is. Striptease revolves around the 'Eager Beaver' bar 1n Florida which houses an intimate group of stnppers, among them Dem1 Moore as the vivacious Enn Grant. A former FBI clerk, Erin's sole reason for stripping is to fight to regain custody of her seven year old daughter, Angela (played by Demi's daughter Rumer) . Erin is surrounded by greedy men (in the guise of Burt Reynolds) who fi nd it impossible to control their sexual urges towards her and vie with each other using blackmail. This film claims to combine sex, politics, revenge and comedy but in real ity it's just another tit 'n' ass spectacle. The real entertainment is in the fact th at Demi was paid $12.5 million for her starring role, adding fire to director Andrew Bergman's belief that "the women aren't the ones exploited, the men are the real suckers."

A TIME TO KILL (1 5) USA (1996) Courtroom chaos Dir: Joel Schumacher ABC- now showing fter its huge success in the States A Time to Kill (adapted from the novel by John Grisham) is sure to cook up a storm over here. A tenyear-ol d gi rl is raped and brutally assaulted, and in act of revenge her father kills the two men responsible for taking his daughter's innocence. The father is Carl Lee Hailey, a black Mississippi factory worker and the very fact that he is black ensures that the men he kills become innocent 'victims'. Young lawyers Jake Brigance (Matthew McConaughey) and El len Roark (Sandra Bullock) undertake the task defending Hailey as his life and the safety of his family becomes threatened. Away from the drama in the courtroom , racial tensions are exposed right down to the roots of American Southern history. Starring Kevin Spacey (of The Usual Suspects fame) as the explosive prosecutor, this thriller reveals acting of excellence and manages to avoid verging on the cliff of sentimentality.

et in the picturesque countryside of Tuscany, this visually stunning film tells the story of Lucy, a beautifu l and innocent American teenager on a mission to lose her... erm ... innocence. The big joke being that Liv Tyler who plays the girl in ~uesti on is far too gorgeous to have reached
the age of nineteen with her ... erm ... honour still intact. Lucy comes to Italy to stay with her dead poet mother's arty friends, who lounge around being aesthetic and take it in turns to get the hots for her. Her two motives for visiting are: A) To continue the seduction of an Italian neighbour that started four years before, and B) to solve the romantic riddle from her mothers diary. Although there isn't much action, there's enough dreamy landscapes and romantic charms to stop you thinking impure thoughts about ol' Liv.

or all you LCR junkies who just can 't get enough of male bravado and dancing around handbags, the Theatre Royal has got just the thing. Girls' Night Out opens next week, promising plenty of brandy, baby oil and bare bums. But it's 'more than just The Chippendales with a script!' it's Jane's hen night and her friends have a little something saucy planned, and we're not talking about spaghetti alia carbonara.
F
The girls get plastered and the blokes get their kit off, more than just a bit of tanned flesh is revealed. Uttle do the unsuspecting girls know that the four-pack of rippling muscles are not anonymous male tarts after all! They're all r路eally members of the House of Commons out on their mate's stag night. Not really. You'll have to go and see it to find out what actually happens. So get your mates down to the Theatre Royal 'cos you can see loads of half-stripped blokies and even get 拢2 off each ticket if there's a group of more than ten of you.
ne of Hollywood's greatest comedy actors arrives in Norwich this week with the opening of a new Neil Simon comedy. Gene Wilder (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Blazing Saddles, and a bunch of rubbish films with Richard Pryor) stars in Laughter on the 23rd Floor, the plot of which is based on the life of the celebrated comedian Sid Caesar. Set in the 1950's, Wilder plays a New York screen hero built on the jokes his team of gag writers create. Tragically, beneath all the humour, Max Prince is falling to booze and pills. Laughter on the 23rd Floor promises to be a stylish and wildly funny portrait of fifties New York and a believable study of a tragically flawed master of wit. lt's not often Norwich has an American film star grace its stage, so don't miss this one-off chance to see Gene Wilder in action.
