In this, our third year of presenting the Australian Party Stylist of the Year Awards, we thought it apt to be reminded of the power of inspiration. If we consider the meaning of ‘inspiration’, that is - the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative – we can see that this single word encapsulates the Australian party industry and every entrepreneur and business who contributes to it, to a tee.

Since we commenced the Awards in 2021, we continue to be inspired by all the amazing businesses who have grown and consistently flex their creative muscle – despite the ongoing challenges of a post-pandemic world. We have felt your excitement in the posts you have tagged us in - demonstrating your creative endeavours with new and interesting parties and products that you work tirelessly to develop. We so enjoy seeing you build confidence in your abilities as business owners, celebrating the successes you achieve both as entrepreneurs and through the expansion of your networks and how you have continued to thrive no matter what lies before you.

Throughout this year’s Awards season many of our finalists shared with us how working through the category questions reignited their passion for their business, helped them to learn more about who they are as business owners and even discovered new ways to make improvements that will hopefully lead to bigger and better business opportunities in the future.

ABOUT THE AWARDS

A desire to see the party industry recognised!

For more than a decade there has been a new industry bubbling across the globethe exciting world of professional party styling. This industry takes the grand scope of big budget events across to suburban backyards and small party venues.

Australia has seen growth across this sector brought about by the increased supply and variety of themed partyware, balloon and prop hire specialists, creators of custom decorations and favours, as well as florists and party entertainers. More recently we have seen cake decorators, cookie makers, and specialist bakers grow their talents to create extraordinary feats of design with skills that make our eyes pop and our hands reach out to take as many pieces as we are allowed. Or, if you’re a one-year-old, to take this creative masterpiece and smash it into a million yummy crumbs!

Party Styling has also emerged as a new career path for many. This has seen the humble DIY party elevated to the stuff of fantasy, produced with expert precision, and with an unwavering eye for detail.

There can be no doubt that it is past time to celebrate the exceptional talent of small businesses in this industry. The awards aim to recognise leaders and standouts in their field for innovation, collaboration, and customer service. Our aim is to support and give back by rewarding their efforts and commitment to delivering excellence.

An important consideration for the Awards was that they showcase the most outstanding businesses in their area of expertise. This is why we chose to work with a peer-reviewed judging process based on meeting standardised criteria. Winners are awarded on merit rather than a public voting system, thus allowing a fairer and more balanced approach to recognising those who serve our industry with grace and commitment, no matter how many clients or followers they have.

The Awards seek to acknowledge businesses that provide invaluable support to a thriving and vibrant business community, and to encourage every party entrepreneur to continue pushing and chasing their dreams. After all, an industry is only as strong as the businesses that are committed to seeing it succeed. We have no doubt that these Awards will enable the Australian party industry to create many more reasons to celebrate in the years ahead.

ERIN MCGINLEY

Founder and Managing Director of Party Stylists Australia

For over half a decade

Rochelle has built a thriving children’s party styling and entertainment business based on the NSW Central Coast and is now carving out a new career in the corporate functions and events sector.

Seeing a need for small businesses in the party industry to network and connect, Rochelle created a Facebook Group in 2017 – Party Stylists Australia. In 2020 she partnered with a fellow party entrepreneur and turned the community into a formal business. In 2021 Party Stylists Australia branched out into the Awards space and became the first dedicated awards program to support the Australian party industry.

Prior to joining the industry, Rochelle spent over 20 years in the finance sector supporting executives and managing large scale conferences and international events.

ESTHER KEFALOUKOS

Owner and Director of Confetti Fair

Boss and admin super star, Esther was drawn to Confetti Fair by her love of everything party planning which really spoke to her strong planning and organising gene.

Keeping herself busy makes her happy, which she does planning future Confetti Fair activities and generating the spark that becomes our renowned shoots and magazines.

Alongside driving the strategy and ideas for Confetti Fair, Esther also manages a demanding senior role in online communications, events and media in investor relations.

A jack of many trades, she previously also ran her own styling business, and regularly works in events and parties, catering, styling or planning for her own small clientele.

Director of Operations and Technology of Party Stylists Australia

Erin has been running small businesses in the events and party industry since late 2014. With experience spanning the e-commerce world, prop hire, and various aspects of the wedding industry including video, event management, and styling she has successfully been published in several magazines for conceptual styling ideas in collaboration with one of Australia’s top floral artists.

With a Communications Degree (Hons) focused primarily on writing, she brings her unique approach to problem- solving and idea generation to Party Stylists Australia.

With skills in website building, business coaching, and the odd dad joke, Erin likes to lighten the sometimes serious mood that can overshadow running any small business.

MARIA ANDRIOPOULOS

Digital and Creative Director of Confetti Fair

Confetti Fair’s creative and digital heartbeat and a marketer by trade who lives and breathes all things digital.

A digital marketing dinosaur with 15 years of experience, she also has a print and magazine publishing background. A self-taught designer and illustrator, publishing a magazine has always been a life long dream that became a reality with Confetti Fair.

Maria has experience in every facet of digital marketing, from social, paid media, SEO, and even technical implementations. Her particular area of expertise is in email marketing. She has developed digital strategies for businesses large and small, across events, tourism, e-coupon, e-commerce, and hospitality.

Back for the second year, Party Stylists Australia teamed up with Confetti Fair once again and brought to life their shared vision to recognise the incredible talent and creatives of the party industry in Australia with the Party Stylist of the Year Awards.

In 2022 the Awards team brought together a new set of well-respected judges, and taking onboard feedback from the first year, launched new categories and processes for businesses registering. Even more exciting was that the 2022 Awards were celebrated with an in person ceremony. Many judges, finalists and people from the party industry across Australia came together for a fun evening of getting dressed up, eating, drinks and lots of fun with peers! Each attendee also took home a jam packed goodie bag! A very big thank you also to all sponsors, we appreciated your contribution.

THE JUDGES

No awards program is possible without judges and we understand the importance of assembling a panel of experts who have achieved great success at building grass roots businesses, and the value they bring to the table.

Our judges were selected because of their contribution to the party industry as thought leaders, mentors and innovators. They also had a vision for what the Australian party industry could achieve. In many ways, the successes that our judges have enjoyed in their professional lives has paved the way for other small business entrepreneurs to follow. Importantly, our judges support the industry and are committed to seeing it grow and achieve even greater success.

With their keen eye for detail and ability to assess the carefully constructed responses from over 100 applications, our judging panel had the difficult job of deciding who to award our industry’s most prestigious accolades to.

MARY RONIS, MARY RONIS EVENTS

FOUNDER AND CREATOR

Mary is a coffee addict, magazine hoarder, embracer of the ridiculous, and a genuine lover of life.

She is also perfectionist, meticulous organiser and known for her attention to detail. However, the most significant factor that drives her and her work is her love for people and her deep desire to create joy.

With 17 years of industry experience, Mary has built a large clientele that includes decades-long loyalty across celebrities, television, radio, and large corporations.

She has held masterclasses both in person and online and has spoken on industry panels across the world. Mary has been an ambassador for Life’s Little Celebration’s for four years and was also nominated for Best Event Planner in Asia Pacific by RSVP. Mary styled and produced the first Australian Administration Awards and Zoe Marshall’s What Women Want seminars. She has been involved in many charities, including Little Legs Foundation, Help for Hirschsprung’s Disease, and Make a Wish.

Her work has been featured in various publications and media, including The Today Show, Life’s Little Celebrations magazine, Confetti Fair, Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Wedluxe magazine, and Kara’s Party Ideas. Her work was recently featured in Australia’s first destination wedding magazine for Wedded Wonderland. Mary’s biggest goal in life is to enjoy it with laughter and happiness.

To determine the winners we know that our judges committed hours and, in some instances days, carefully assessing each entry. One by one, they reviewed the submissions based on a specific set of criteria that covered service excellence, innovation, client management, inspiration, creativity, training and communication. With great pride, our judges discovered just how extraordinarily talented the Australian party industry is.

TANYA CASTELLINO, LIFE’S LITTLE CELEBRATIONS

DIRECTOR

Tanya is the founder of Life’s Little Celebrations, which has promoted and supported kids event vendors for the last 12 years! She also launched the Celebrate Conference for event industry vendors in Australia, bringing together our industry along with amazing speakers. She has also founded the Celebrate Society membership, providing support, promotion and networking for vendors in our industry!

She is the founder of ‘Celebrating Little Ones’ magazine along with the well known Life’s Little Celebrations blog and directory where she showcases members of ‘The Celebrate Society’. She has grown her Instagram following to 115K+ followers and developed an amazing industry community.

Her business has been featured in publications such as Donna Hay Magazine and Practical Parenting Magazine.

She is a mum of four and loves supporting other small business owners in the event industry!

EMILY MARTINEZ, PISTACHIO ENTERTAINMENT

CREATIVE DIRECTOR

A passion for performing, coupled with a love of entertaining children has shaped Emily into a successful business woman with experience in choreography, costuming, casting, staff development, consultation and entertainment management.

Her decades of formal training and passion for dance has taken her to all corners of the globe. Her journey includes touring with Tony Price Productions in children’s pantomimes, entertaining at theme parks, and traveling the globe with The Wiggles. Initially a Wiggly Dancer, she also starred as Dorothy the Dinosaur from 2006 to 2009. Her impressive career also includes collaborations with ABC Kids, BBC, and Cebebbies.

Emily’s enthusiasm for entertaining children expands beyond TV and touring, with the creation of Pistachio Entertainment in 2010. Her desire to deliver ‘something different’ in the world of entertainment has seen the business continue to diversify to cater for an ever-expanding demand. Emily is proud to have established relationships with leading stylists, event planners, and venues working together to create the best in custom entertainment packages.

Steve has been involved in the branding industry for nearly 40 years. Over the course of his career he has worked with numerous international organisations including Cadbury, Coca Cola and Streets Ice Cream.

While assisting Telecom to rebrand to Telstra in the early 1990s, Steve realised there was a gap in Australia in the emerging vehicle branding market, and in 1994 he established the first of his many companies Transcal Pty Ltd under a house in an outer suburb of Melbourne.

Successfully hiring and mentoring staff over the past 25 years has created opportunities for both Steve, and his employees to share in the successes of the business while ensuring stable financial futures for all due to performance-based rewards.

Steve’s entrepreneurial skills have also involved creating companies in the fields of corporate interior design, lingerie, and international business activities in India.

DEAN SALAKAS, THE PARTY PEOPLE

CHIEF PARTY DUDE

Dean has worked in the party industry since the age of four where he would put sand in bags for his parents to make balloon weights for the family business in the mid 80s.

Dean serves on the advisory board of the Online Retail Summit and Online Retail Association, as well as an advisor to retail tech businesses.

The Party People is a proud member of PEBA (pro environment balloon alliance), a founding member of BASA (Balloon Artists and Supplies Association Australia) and founding member of QBN (Qualatex Balloon Network).

The Party People is Australia’s largest physical store with over 35,000 party products all in one location. The Party People is a highly decorated awards winner having been recognised by the Australian Retail Association, and National Retail Association awards, as well as the inaugural winner of the 2021 Partyware Supplier Of The Year Award.

Community work has been the essence of her family life growing up. And since graduating she has worked in multiple countries and industries such as Pharmaceuticals, and Health and Technology. No matter where she is and what she has done her purpose has been to drive a positive change in people’s lives.

As a parent to two beautiful children Renu realised the importance of good education. She feels every child deserves the opportunity to be educated and have all resources available to them no matter where they live. Renu’s vision is to make this intention a reality through GoLove.

Julia is known for creating branding images for growers and internationally recognized brands, including billboards, largescale media campaigns, social media and red carpet events; including designing a floral gown for the red carpet at the Film and TV awards.

Her list of achievements spans incredible industry and creative sectors with her most recent achievement a personal invitation to display at the Chelsea Flower Show. Appointed Creative Director and Arts Curator for the Main Beach Spring Flower Festival, she has Conducted Demonstrations and Workshops throughout Australia, Japan, Indonesia, and the USA.

Julia’s work sees her create Fresh floral fashion pieces on roaming Models for VIP parties & celebrity events, and exhibiting on the main stage with a demonstration at Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. Her designs feature in worldwide campaigns, as well as national and international fashion magazines in over 80 countries. Julia has designed countless Cover images for print and online publications.

Coming from a background in professional event planning in the Sydney entertainment and hospitality industry, Alex has now been hand curating modern party goods that inspire on-trend themes and bringing celebrations to life for the professional party maker and DIY party lover for almost a decade. She works closely with some of the top stylists and planners in Australia building relationships with like minded industry professionals.

With a Business Degree plus her event management and customer service background Alex established Ruby Rabbit when she knew she needed to balance career and motherhood.

Based in Sydney and delivering Australia wide Ruby Rabbit offers the most gorgeous collection of party goods guaranteed to make your celebration amazing.

ELIZA STUBBINGS, COPPER FORK CAKES

In 2017 at the age of 21, Eliza left behind a uni degree to follow a lifelong passion, and pursue the business that has since grown into the well known and trusted brand that it is today. From the very beginning CFC has specialised in tiered buttercream wedding cakes with fresh floral arrangements, and a focus on minimalistic flawless finishes and sharp edges.

In 2019, the launch of Copper Fork Cakes first online cake classes, allowed eager students the opportunity to take a deep dive into the unique buttercream cake techniques that Eliza had become known for. In 2020 Eliza’s innovative arch cake design gave rise to a now world wide cake trend, as well as becoming the latest addition to the Copper Fork Cakes online cake school!

Today, as the business enters its sixth year, Eliza spends her days growing and managing her online school, as well as continuing to design towering buttercream cakes for some of Sydney’s most stylish weddings.

Party Stylist of the Year Awards - 17 ALEXANDRA BULL, RUBY RABBIT

Tennille has an extensive background in kids’ shows, balloon twisting, face painting and many areas of performance including singing, dancing and acting.

In 2022 Tennille was awarded Balloon Artist of the Year, and in 2021 she won Entertainer of the Year with the Industry Awards at Party Stylists Australia. Tennille has taught classes at large balloon events in Australia and is internationally trained by world class balloon twisters and face painters. She is internationally qualified as a Certified Balloon Artist (CBA) with Qualatex and has been an instructor and examiner in the professional balloon artist community. She regularly attends international Balloon Conventions, and is regularly invited to teach at The Australian Body Art Awards Conventions Australia.

Tennille also teaches balloon twisting and decor classes to her industry peers in Sydney on a regular basis.

MARY ALAM, SWEET HEAVENLY EVENTS & PARTY HIRE

CREATIVE DIRECTOR & OWNER

Mary has over 10 years experience in events. Having previously coming from the corporate world, Mary started her business with a little apothecary jar collection to cater for lolly buffets, and grown it to be a successful company styling hundreds of events as well as a huge inventory in her prop hire collection.

Mary is also the founder of ‘The Event Angel’ service and is a strong collaborator with industry leaders including high end stakeholders and clients. With an impressive following on Instagram Mary’s business has been featured on popular industry platforms such as Life’s Little Celebrations, Confetti Fair, Kara’s Party Ideas and also on television.

As well as being busy running her business and styling events she is also a mother to five beautiful boys.

Before starting an events business Marios spent a good part of his career within the Hospitality and Events industry from operations, to sales and marketing working for some of Sydney’s renowned luxury hotels and events spaces.

PELIN TOMEO, PICTURE PERFECT PLANNING PERTH

Pelin is a mother of two, and prior to starting a family she spent 11 years working in function management across hotels in Perth which followed her early career life in Real Estate.

After planning tons of events for family and friends Pelin decided to start her own business in the party industry. Since starting her business she has been featured in Confetti Fair, and Life’s Little Celebrations magazines and was a Rising Star of the Year finalist in 2021. Picture Perfect Planning was also recognised in the top 10 Party Stylist of the Year finalists in their first year of business.

Having since expanded from event styling by purchasing a second business, Perth High Chair Hire, Pelin has been going from strength to strength serving her clients.

With a love of coordinating and creating her own concepts, Pelin likes to bring her unique and personalised service and ideas to each clients event.

Nicole’s career foundation was set originally in the graphic design space, coupling that with eight years in the events industry, and a background as a professional makeup artist Nicole saw an opportunity to create a unique business idea and several years ago launched Kids Pamper Parties.

Now leading a large team of makeup artists, and beauticians within the kids entertainment space, she has been acknowledged by both her local business awards, and the best of beauty awards.

With an invitation to join The Sydney Royal Easter Show she has since adapted the business model to become a stand partner at this annual event.

Mary Ronis, stylist extraordinaire needs no introduction.

Having styled over 2,000 parties and events over 17 years, she has worked with celebrities and corporations, including Kiss FM, Fitzy and Wippa, and Warner Bros. She has styled product launches for brands like Stan, Avon, The Iconic and Tutumonde.

Wish, Little Legs Foundation, and Help for Hirschsprungs Disease.

Her work has appeared on The Today Show, Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, and Wedluxe, as well as in Life’s Little Celebrations and Confetti Fair.

When did you start working in the event industry and what was your first job?

I started in 2006. My first business name was Scribble and Pop and I used to create custom bespoke party stationery for kids. This was all handmade, often with original illustrations and paintings.

It was a true evolution from this role into a stylist. Starting in stationery, then moving to boutique weddings and once my couples began having families I naturally started

doing their children’s parties. That’s when I found my calling. I realised this was the space I could really stretch the boundaries of my imagination and bring the most joy to my clients.

What were the standout events of your career?

I don’t have any standouts. Each event was given the same amount of time and love and there is something special about every single one.

What would you like readers to know about your journey as a party and event stylist?

When I started, you must remember there was not much available in relation to events. There was no social media, if you wanted to market yourself, there were only magazines. It was much harder to be seen and to make the public aware you existed. Moreover, we didn’t have many choices or suppliers that we could engage to assist us with the production of our events. If we wanted a prop or particular décor, we had to literally research, source and buy them. So, for a while, until the industry started to include more services, I was doing most of the heavy duty work solo. Even though this experience has given me invaluable skills, it also emphasised the importance of working as a team because I know what it’s like trying to do it all on your own. Over time, I found what I loved and what I was best doing was styling so I focused all energy on becoming a specialist in that area.

Tell us what inspired you to start working in the party industry?

Ever since I was a child, I was captivated by the original Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory movie. I was completely mesmerised by this human who could create magic through imagination and wished I could create such a magical world that brought so much joy the world. This desire was the focal motivation behind my love for events. I didn’t just want to create something that was pleasant to the eye, I wanted each guest to actually feel that they had been transported to a place that could only exist in their dreams

What has been your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement is building a brand based on consistency and great work ethic and being true to who I am. This has enabled me to develop firm long term relationships with my clients and to build a beautiful creative community with my peers which I cherish

How and where do you find inspiration?

Literally everywhere and anywhere. It could be a particular way a piece of fabric moves to the colours in a reflection of light, to a pile of dried leaves by the side of the road. The secret is to try and find the beauty in the most ordinary things and then make them extraordinary.

How has working in this industry changed you as a person?

This job has given me so many experiences and life lessons that have ultimately shaped who I am today. When I started, I was very green behind the ears, however over time, this job has given me the confidence to trust my creative choices, to not be afraid to take risks no matter how scary they may seem and has altered my perception of my work from just a creative outlet being a one woman band, to one of a business and leading a team.

The most important lesson however, which I learnt through injury, is that everything in this life is temporary and things can change unexpectedly. Therefore, I am no longer restless and always searching and worrying, but rather just grateful for all my blessings. How would you describe your personal style?

There is always an element of fun and quirkiness. Along with a love for colour

You are well known for your collaborations – in your experience, what makes a successful collaboration?

Transparency, communication and making sure all expectations are laid out on the table from the beginning. Then the follow through and making sure everything that was promised comes to fruition. Building relationships and trust is imperative. If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?

This is a hard question. Probably nothing. I am grateful for every bump in the road as much as any accolade. If anything, more focus on self-care. In our industry, we tend to forget to look after ourselves.

You have been a major inspiration to the entire industry – for those starting out, what words of advice would you give?

Find what you are good at and focus on being the best at what you do. If this is your passion, keep going. Be fearless. Success does not happen overnight. Consistency, resilience and determination should be the passengers on your journey through the highs and lows. Always stay true to your aesthetic, work ethically and stay in your lane. Lastly, say yes to even the scariest of opportunities. You will surprise yourself at what you are capable of. Never stop learning. Ask questions, stay curious. t

Hi, I am Biruktawit. I was born and raised in Ethiopia.

Growing up, I used to watch my mom gardening and decorating. Our backyard was full of different flowers, so by the time I was 16, I found I was becoming obsessed with flowers.

After moving to Australia in 2013, I looked for courses to help me build my own business. Once I received my Certificate IV in Business Admin I started to ask family and friends if they had any event planning jobs as this would help me gain experience in the industry.

In February 2019, I bought my first props and started event styling. The past few years have been amazing as my business has grown from working alone to hiring three staff and renting a larger space. We were also Local Businesses Awards finalists in 2020 and 2023. The name Kebron is my daughter’s name, which means unity.

Melbourne still had restrictions at the time of my 30th, so a DIY birthday party was where it all began.

I am a creative person by nature, however, my full-time job doesn’t allow me to showcase this creative side.

I currently work full-time in the building industry and prepare events on weekends. I have always wanted my own business, so creating Miss Eventi was a dream come true.

As a business owner, I have found it to be rewarding to be able to set challenges to better myself and learn a billion new skills along the way.

My motto is: You never know everything, which is why I keep going back to learn more.

My most recent highlights are - pushing myself to enter this competition - The Party Stylist Of The Year Award. - I taught my balloon twisting skills at the 2023 Australian Body Art Awards, and I loved it so much, that I plan to teach more over the coming years.

Hi! My name Is Amanda Brown and I am a professional face painter and children’s entertainer from Newcastle, New South Wales.

I have been a face painter for over 15 years, though back then, I was far from a ‘professional’, in fact, I was pretty terrible.

I worked in youth work and disability services. I aimed to find a fun way to connect and bring some happiness to kids that had been doing it tough. Through face painting, I found my passion for making kids smile and encouraging their own creativity. I pursued this and started my own business, Mystic Festival Arts.

My name is Heidi Ramsay and I am the owner of Luxury Bell Events.

In 2020 during lockdown, I built my business by hiring out a bell tent and setting up contactless family glamping in backyards. I became passionate about providing families the opportunity to have a break from homeschooling and for them to be able to celebrate milestones whilst creating memorable family bonding experiences during lockdown.

Once lockdown was lifted my business grew along with my passion for creating glamping sleepovers. I have now expanded my business to include indoor canopy sleepovers, emperor tent chill out lounges, and an outdoor cinema and I work with others in the industry to provide glamping villages. I strive to make each setup picture-perfect.

In 2020 I started with the one bell tent and in 2023 I now have seven bell tents and three emperor tents.
