My Memories of Barry, by N~JI\IC:Y P'I-Wpp ~ As the anniveFsary of Barry's tragic death looms near, I would like to write my own personal tribute about the Barry I knew. I have so many happy and personal memories of this very complex man.

As I've already said, I'd seen Barry around for a number of years and would never have thought or even wanted to be friends. I always thought of him as a withdrawn, rather unfriendly man.

I've been a friend of Barry's for many years. I first became friends with him around the late eighties although I knew him long before then, not that we ever spoke in those days. But the Coventry group used to meet up with the Northampton group to go sabbing, or doing occupations of factory farms, fur farms and other places of animal cruelty.

However sometimes fate takes a hand in our lives. It happened that one day Barry together with two more AIR people were arrested and all three of them landed on remand in Bedford Prison. One of them happened to be Gari, who is 'my daughter Lesley's partner. So three people turned up on a visit, but no one came to see Barry. There was no way I could leave Barry on his own no matter how I felt about him. I

I remember Barry always being there, although I never remember him speaking or joking with anyone. I was aware that he had many friends, but he was very much a man's man and whenever in a crowd whether it be at an AIR meeting or demo he would stay quietly by himself totally unnoticed. Barry's closest and dearest friends, the ones he v<as totally at ease with, were his mates who'd all been involved in direct¡actions. It was a closed circle of men who cared passionately about cruelty inflicted on the vulnerable and beautiful creatures on the earth. They were prepared to risk their freedom to fight a vicious and obscene system, which to this very day still exists in the annals of the Home Office and the callous, uncaring peopl<~ who represent the government. The reason that Barry went on hunger strike was because he actually thought that Tony Blair was an honest man (what a bloody joke). He genuinely believed that if he canied on, the government would eventually have to listen to him, and do what they'd originally promised to do before they got into power, instead of which the people in power, people like George Howarth and his cohorts, went on T.V. to try and rubbish Barry. Telling lies saying he'd been cheating without even having the guts to go and visit Barry who at the time was a mere skeleton. People with such mean twisted minds they couldn't even begin to realise the integrity of people such as Barry. He was and always --~nt among pygmies.

must admit to feeling nervous, and wondering how I was going to get through the next quarter of an hour with this morose man. I needn't have worried. The next quarter of an hour flew by - we just hit it off right from the start. I found. that on a one to one basis, Barry was a totally different person, full of fun, friendly, relaxed and totally interesting. From that time on we became the best of friends. Not long after they were all let out on bail. It was a joyous occasion, all the lads were on a high. I remember Barry punching the air with his fists with a big grin on his face. When Barry discovered I had to go to London every week (I was on bail at the time for my alleged part in the raid on the Royal London Hospital), he insisted on driving me down. So for the next few months he would drive from Northampton to Coventry every week, take me to London and drive back. He never once Jet me down.

It was during these long drives that our

friendship grew strong. Barry would talk about his family, and about his past and how he first became involved in the AIR movement and about his strong feelings for the animals. And may I add his even stronger feelings against their abusers. It became a joke between us that we never

left London without getting completely lost. Neither of us any sense of direction. I remember once we landed down one street about six times. He used to love telling me about the direct actions he'd been involved in, and of the ones where despite the careful planning they sometimes had gone horribly wrong. But he always made a joke of it, he could always make me laugh. And always that wicked sense of humour delivered with a straight"face. The only occasions I've seen Barry really angry was if he was talking to anyone who was not passionate about AIR, people who wouldn't go on a demo for instance if they had a cold or hangover, or made silly excuses as to why they couldn't participate. "The animals have no choice and even less with people like you lot around," I've heard him say more than once. I remember once after stopping along the motorway to fill up, Barry started to tell me about all of the cars he'd owned that had set on fire He'd got to the fifth when I began to feel something was wrong and on turning my head saw that not only was the car filled with smoke, but all along the motorway were great clouds of billowing black smoke. Barry response was 'bloody hell'. Fortunately, we managed to slowly get it to the junction to Watford where we left it and slowly made our way back to the last garage we had passed. Well that was the plan. As we walked along so I kept my eyes on Barry's white trainers, as by now it was pitch dark. A good idea until I

PRISON: HIGHPOINT D~TE: 26/09/02 TIME: 6.50 PM THUR9D~Y walked smack into a signpost. A bit later a car drew up alongside us and demanded to know what the hell we were doing walking along the motorway in the dark. It was the police. We explained what had happened and they not only gave us a lift back to the car, but also towed the car to a safe place and then gave us a lift to the railway station. I'll never forget the look on Barry's face as we stood waiting for our respective trains. Total bewilderment. "Can you believe that," he repeated over and over again. "Coppers being so kind, can you believe it." To shut him up I said: "I wonder if they'd have been so kind if they knew we'd spent the whole afternoon in court?" That did the trick, his face widened into a huge grin. "Can you believe that" was always Barry's response to anything untoward, whether it be towards a kindness or someone being bloodyminded. The only difference was in the emphasis and the expression on his face . I'm so glad I was privileged to know the real man behind the aura of martyrdom which we inevitably now think of him. He was our first real martyr. People have sometimes called Jill a martyr, but Jilly never planned to die, she was murdered by the state. Barry too was murdered by the Blair government; because he really did believe he would win his fight for the animals. He was a man of strong convictions and sadly he put his trust in politicians. But we all know that there is no honor in the dirty game of politics. By the time Barry knew he' d lost the fight, his health had gone. I remember him once admitting to me that he was scared of dying, yet he doggedly fought on. Many times I've left him thinking I would never see him again, but there he' d be the following fortnight. Many is the time I've told him that he's a really good alienhe would always laugh. The last time I saw him, he told me that he'd nearly died the previous evening. He told me he was spinning along a dark tunnel and there was this bright light at the end and he saw Jill. Well, that's my own personal story about Barry Horne. To me he was a caring friend and I'm proud to have known him. _Let- al-1-0f.l!S never forget his courage and utter dedicaticm' to the animals he so desperately fought for and let us all take inspiration from a wonderful human being.

The National demo on the 28th of Sept was a great success and split into three highly organised and effective mass home demos. Here are reports we received from all three .. MOBILE DEMO HEATS of "Saturday's 1 onstration against HLS saw demonstrators switch venue at the last minute enabling them to hold an effective day of action against HLS and their collaborators. Activists split into several groups and hit targets up and down the country. As hundreds of police were left scratching their heads at Welwyn Garden City and phoning the campaign up to ask where all the protesters were, 200 demonstrators converged on Letchworth, the home town of Andrew Gay, HLS marketing director and press spokesman. Screaming demonstrators gathered outside the home of the abuser before plastering it in stickers bearing his photograph and handing out his phone number and picture to all of his neighbours. With drums banging and megaphones blaring, everyone in the road was left in no doubt as to the fact they have a monster living in their street. As the police moved in to try and stop them, the protesters burst onto the

nearby road and headed for the town center carrying a huge banner reading 'Andrew Gay Supports Animal Torture At Huntingdon Life Sciences' and making one hell of a noise. Traffic ground to a standstill and shoppers looked on in bemusement as the crowd marched around the town with the police ten steps behind most of the way. In the town center locals and protesters gathered to hear about how HLS are finished and about how the demonstration had been yet another clear example that nothing the authorities do will hold us back or stop us. Andrew Gay and his home address were put well and truly on the map. One woman's banner said it all: "We will never stop until the filthy vivisectionists are wiped off the face of the earth." We are on course for closure and we carry on hammering until HLS is finished." SHAC was also sent anonymous reports from people who took the protest into the streets of people connected to HLS .... "At 10:30pm we arrived at the home

of top Marsh director Hamish Ritchie. We shouted on the megaphone as we drove past with the air horn blasting out of the car window. If this pathetic little man thinks he can live in peace and quiet while animals are dying at HLS he can think again ... " "Late on Saturday night on our way home from the SHAC demo we decided to pay a visit to the home/office of Fetch Europe Ltd in Middlesex. This is where the company owner and his wife run an animal import bus_iness for HLS and other labs. He was told that animal rights are watching him and that until he dumps HLS and stops bringing animals to their death there will be trouble outside his home." After the demonstration in Letchworth people split into groups and visited a director of a company associated with HLS director John Caldwell as well as the homes of two Syscap directors.

MOBILE DEMO CAMBRIDGESHIRE

"Sat 28th Sept. A lovely sunny day, just perfect for visiting those involved in animal abuse where they live to remind them that we are out there and will keep the pressure on them as long as they are killing animals at HLS or involved with and supporting those who do. We met in a country car park full of people out for a day of dog walking and picnics. With no SHAG tee shirts or banners on show we were fairly inconspicuous. About 70 of us assembled and with military precision proceeded to our targets.

FAST, HARD AND EFFECTIVE

Parking close by and making su¡re all the vehicles were positioned for a quick getaway, we went to confront these compassionless, greedy animal exploiters and let them know that there is no hiding place for them while they make money from the pain, suffering and despair of the innocent. We visited six of these vile abusers and made so much noise that neighbars came out on to the street to see what was going on. Most were shocked to learn how these people made their money and took leaflets. Our efficient and organized group managed five visits before the police caught up with us and even then they

only managed to detain one car. The police finally caught up as we left the last abuser. We then had a police tail until we left Cambridgeshire after an extremely well executed day. Our job was done so we weren't bothered in the slightest!" Activists also went to HLS and kept the workers blocked in for half an hour before the police came to rescue them.

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperatin with it.

MOBILE DEMO SURREY "Activists gathered at noon and the SHAC posse set off to give Marsh directors a reminder of why they are going to be targeted while they associate with HLS. We arrived at a Marsh director's house near Sunbury. It was quiet, but not for ,. long! Drop HLS Marsh- we're not going away until you do. Activists made sure that he got the message, as did all their neighbours. Off to the next director Malcolm Tyler near Elstead in a leafy rural setting complete with a tennis court and electric gates. Again they hid in shame as we made it clear what we thought of their involvement in propping up HLS's filthy

and cruel business and reminded them that the pressure is on them. Back in the cars for a short drive to the next director John Hurrel near Haslemere. We were greeted by angry neighbours who complained about the noise but were sympathetic once they were told what their neighbour was involved in. Then on to one of the top 4 Marsh directors, White-Cooper's near Virginia Water, where there was a single little security man who had trouble making himself heard over the din of angry activists. Is the security using up too much of your dirty profits Marsh? There is an easy answer- drop HLS now, and we'll go away.

Some activists were then followed by Surrey police for over 90 miles across many counties until the police lost interest on the Gloucestershire/Wiltshire border. It's must be nice for Surrey tax-payers to know that there must be very little crime in Surrey and that Surrey plod can go for outings just to see that activists get home safely. But it left others free to carry on the message into the night..." This was just one of many demos that was going on across the Southeast targeting HLS and Marsh.

T URN U P THE V OLUME "Ten angry activists arrived at the gates of HLS today to give the filthy abusers a piece of their minds. Anger reached fever pitch as the protesters thought of the ani mals trapped inside waiting to die and those responsible for it were directly in front of them. The noise didn't stop all day, with the drums, megaphones, sirens and horns in constant use. Every abuser, supplier and customer that went through the gates of death were told exactly how much they are hated. A positive day was had by all as we vowed together that we would smash HLS. LEGACY LOSERS When HLS were forced to move their shareholder listing to the USA, they told the press that this was a positive step for the company as it would enable them to keep the shareholders secret. Imagine our amazement when one of HLS's own market-makers phoned up SHACUSA offering to trade confidential information on a top shareholder in exchange for being left alone to make money out of the stock! With allies like this HLS really are in deep trouble. An interesting new tactic has also emerged - 'auto diallers' - a machine that phones numbers over and over and over again -there's some clever people out there! Here are some extracts from the taped conversations that SHACUSA and SHACUK had with Skip (that's his name - honest!) Boruchin from Legacy Trading. These tapes were then passed on to the Financial Times who ran the story on the front page. Not very good for inspiring confidence in your customers and other financial companies you are looking to for support .. .. SKIP: The information I gave I considered to be worthwhile and valuable, because I thought that what you would be able to do for me would be worthwhile and valuable for me. SHACUK: So the information that you had was information that you were privy to. Who else would have had access that information? SKIP: At this point only the market

I'm selfish in the sense that if there's only one or two market makers, I will get the order flow. SKIP: lt is probably unethical. This shows the sort of people HLS have backing them - people who will sell them down the river to make a quick buck, and people who are stupid enough to believe you can bargain with us to carry on making money out of the pain and misery of the animals inside HLS. Think again Skip - SHAG has got it in for you ... money, and the way I was going to make money, and the way I envisioned me making money is that other market makers, for whatever reason, chose not to make a market in it. I have requested that my name, my social security number and those of my neighbou rs be dropped. Put on the back burner, so to speak. SKIP: I couldn't deal with the automatic diallers - they were driving me crazy. SHACUK: Right. How many calls were you getting from the automatic diallers? SKIP: Far too many, ok. SHACUK: What- several hundred a day would you say? SKIP: Yes. SKIP: If your cause was to get them to sell those shares and I got the orders, then everybody's desire was met. SHACUK: I see, you were looking for a mutually beneficial deal?

MARSH MAUL NEW ZEALAND PART 1 Activists in Wellington New Zealand had two protests this week against the local branch of Marsh. Earlier this week six of us paid them a surprise visit and covered the reception area and lifts in SHAG stickers until we were thrown out. We continued leafleting the public outside the building. Today we returned with 15 people and a huge "Marsh supports animal cruelty" banner to remind them that we aren't going away until they stop supporting HLS. This time the cops came and gave one person a trespass notice (forbidding him from going into the building for two years) ¡ and expressed concern that we were handing out hundreds of leaflets with the home address of local Marsh bigwig David Leather to everyone who walked past.

the first time we got to meet some people at the 'top' even though they were not very helpful at all, refusing to give us their names or home addresses or those of other directors. They said that they knew why we were there and sympathised but when they were asked what they were going to do about it they had no answer and started telling us to leave and that they were going to call the police. After asking us for the 1Oth time and realizing that they were being ignored they decided to try and herd one person at a time into the down lift and got extremely annoyed when each time the lift came up people were still in it. The office, lifts and foyer were decorated with lots of HLS and other anti vivisection stickers and many pictures were taken of management. The demo was then moved outside and the police turned up a bit later and said that they didn't know what we had been up to but they had received some complaints and if we kept using the megaphone they would arrest people for assault as it could hurt some one's ears!

PART2 12 of us went to visit Marsh Auckland this afternoon and we took with us a large banner, placards with big gory pictures and a camera. We asked the secretaries to speak to a manager and this time they obliged. They disappeared out the back and a little time later 3 big men appeared. So for

ITALY Our week of action against Marsh in Italy has been a great success: not only have they received hundreds of

phone calls, taxes and e-mails, but they also received visits from activists both outside and inside their offices. As tar as we know at the moment, since we are waiting for more reports, at least 3 offices had demos outside their buildings and 3 more inside. In Bologna, Torino and Milano activists protested in the streets, making clear to the public and to nearby offices what Marsh is involved in, and getting a lot of public support. Thousands of leaflets have been handed out, and megaphones helped both to let the people know better the reason of protests and ruin Marsh's work. In Torino some activists managed to enter from a back entrance and pass leaflets under Marsh's glass door, while in Bologna a handful of activists had a good laugh when they discovered that all Marsh employees (except two hard working lackies) had been sent home earlier fearing the demos. No employees - no work! During the week of action 3 Marsh offices have seen activists running in . Newspapers report of 20 people entering 2 Marsh offices on Tuesday 17th in the afternoon in Brescia and Cremona. The activists leafleted to workers, explained their reasons on a megaphone and created a lot of chaos. lt seems they also videoed the actions and Marsh documents, that's why Marsh is suing them - if they ever will be identified since no-one has been arrested. Cops arrived in force: police cars, carabinieri cars and city council police cars, but no-one was caught!! On Wednesday more activists report-

there. Activists blocked the entrance, and then they went on to the other site and blockaded the staff car park.

Marsh seems to know also here in Italy what it means to be connected with HLS, and is getting that paranoia feeling that means we are winning: they send away employees before our demos, want to sue us for filming the offices, tried to enter in the Huntingdonsucks.com mailing list, is asking activists please do not send any more e-mails since we cannot read ours !! Rumours say after these run ins some police cars have been in front of their offices the following days! No rest for the wicked, no rest for Marsh! Dear Marsh, we will win, and you know it! Shac-ltalia

Munich: Demo in front of the office. The director refused to discuss anything with the activists despite their polite request.

Dusseldorf:

GERMANY Fifteen activists held a noisy demonstration outside the offices of Marsh forcing the doors to be locked.

Stuttgart: There were lots of police and security staff present who told activists that they were there to stop offices and equipment getting trashed as happened in Berlin when people stormed the offices

Leipzig: Around 40 police turned up for 15 activists! Police asked if SHAG Germany was expected because "these people are known for everything but demonstrating peacefully!". Prior to the demonstration a letter had been written to the office director to ask if he would take a video during the demonstration. He did not answer the letter and refused to take a video during the demonstration. Apparently TV coverage was excellent locally with 20 ,000 people seeing the video of HLS workers abusing beagles .

vivisection as a war against terrorism- and the SHAG campaign is setting the example that in this fight when push comes to shove -we are ready to push, to shove, to punch, to kick, and we are ready win!

Experimentation - we all found it ironic that she herself was a vivisector, is a married to a vivisector, and is currently taking Premarin for her menopause. Activists contacted her at her work address, on her email, her phone extension, and of course at home.

Market Maker Mockery he SHAG campaign is the most feared and threatening menace facing the US vivisection industry today. Pro-animal abuse mouthpiece organizations have been crying to the media about our successes, those targeted by the campaign are trying to stave off crushing campaigns against them with lawsuits, and the police are clutching at straws to deter our protest activity. A valuable lesson has been learned by countless activists across the country -that to achieve animal liberation we must not just pay our $10 a month to some huge national group in hopes they do the job for us, but rather we all must be on the frontlines fighting tooth and nail for those animals suffering inside Huntingdon and places like it. The US has learned to regard the fight against

T

The campaign against HLS's senior scientists was kicked off with a not-so flattering look inside the life of one of the lab's toxicologists. Dean Rodwell was given the 'name and shame' treatment so many of our financial foes have come to dread. Dean's home and work contact information were revealed (prompting quick home demos) and some of the more heinous details of his experiments (rat pups being cannibalized by their poisoned mother). Dean also had a meeting scheduled to discuss his research with another possible customer - the gentlemen he was meeting with got an earful prior to his arrival from activists telling them all about Dean's dirty work at HLS. Mrs. Rodwell was also cast into the limelight. She is a member of the

Within one week of the Sunday Telegraph's story about SHAG USA's inability to knock out HLS's market makers, seven of the eight listed in the article were gone directly due to protest pressure. All that remained was Legacy Trading Co. All that stands in the way of HLS and the doomed prospects of a listing on the 'Pinksheets' is this one trader and US activists have stepped up the pressure. After SHAG revealed to the press worldwide this trader divulging secret HLS shareholder information, a formal complaint was filed with SEC, and Legacy is currently under investigation for share volume manipulation. Not helping the situation for this stubborn company is the "hundreds of phone calls" they get a day that they "cannot handle." AND to top it all off some anonymous direct action activists have made going home a very uncomfortable thing for Legacy president Skip Boruchin to do as he is greeted by notes in his mail slot from neighbors asking him to "leave the neighborhood" as they do not appreciate having their personal information published as a result of his poor business decisions.

Making Marsh Mad Despite injunctions, lawsuits and private investigators trying to get in the way, Marsh demonstrations have continued to happen across the country. From New York to Minneapolis to Oklahoma, protests are springing up everywhere. In Dallas activists paid visits to several Marsh offices before proceeding to the homes of regional directors. Not content with just the home demonstrations, the protesters

FREQUENTLY ASKE WHY MOBILE DEMOS? We have discussed this at great length and asked the opinion of activists all over the country, and the overwhelming response has been that mobile demos are the effective ones, and we need lots more of them. Put yourself in the shoes of a director of HLS or a company that supports them -what would worry you? A thousand people marching round a town centre somewhere hundreds of miles away from where you¡ live, or two hundred angry demonstrators turning up on your doorstep? WHAT ABOUT A LL THE BAD PRESS COVERAGE? The campaign against Huntingdon Life Sciences has gained more press coverage than any other grassroots animal rights campaign in the history of the movement. This campaign is all about direct action and makes no apology for hitting hard at those who are involved and support the murder of animals at HLS, so it is inevitable that some of the press coverage has been critical of our tactics. lt is interesting to note that after every story we might think is damaging, we get loads of members of the public coming up to information stalls and saying how they are right behind us. We believe that people who are against animal cruelty are right behind our tactics - those that sit on the fence or are against us will never fight for the animals .

WILL HLS EVER CLOSE? We know HLS will close - it is just a question of when, and only a matter of time. Look at what we have all achieved so far- we have decimated their shareholder base, forced their bank to foreclose on their 22 million pound loan, frightened off any other commercial bank .worldwide from giving them an account, and virtually every financial institution worldwide from dealing with them, forced them off the London and New York stock exchanges, crashed their share price and made the words Huntingdon Life Sciences synonymous with animal cruelty worldwide. HLS will close when enough people take effective, hard-hitting action against them and finish them off simple as that.

r

Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty

IF HLS CLOSES WON'T IT ALL dUST GO ABROAD? First of all, the cruelty caught on film inside HLS is probably the worst ever filmed inside any lab worldwide.

Secondly this scenario is considered highly unlikely by scientists as these countries do not have the infrastructure to support the vivisection industry. Companies are in constant communication with labs regarding the tests they are doing for them. These companies are not going to move to Third World countries as their staff have no interest in moving there, and because these countries are totally impractical for them to work from. Also companies who test their products in order to get them on the market do so to avoid getting sued when these products poison and kill people, and if they are tested in Third World countries they are far more likely to be forced to pay out huge amounts of money in damages.

WHAT ABOUT ALL THE OTHER COMPANIES INVOLVED IN VIVISECTION? HLS has become the battleground between the vivisection industry and the animal rights movement worldwide. We are putting pressure on the whole industry by our relentless targeting of HLS and the whole industry is judged by the public according to HLS's appalling record of animal abuse, falsification of data and gross staff incompetence. In an article in the

Financial Times in June this year, Frankie Trull of the American Foundation for Biomedical Research stated that the SHAG campaign is a gateway campaign and that 'attacks on HLS threaten the entire scientific research community'.

WON'T THE GOVERNMENT GIVE THEM MONEY? We have consulted one of the top chambers in the country on this one - Matrix chambers which is where Cherie Blair works. We have been advised that the Government would not be able to give HLS money by law as it would be judged to be preferential treatment to that one company as opposed to the rest of the industry. The financial fundamentals of the company are fatally flawed - HLS are 87 million dollars in debt, owe 50 million dollars in bonds that are repayable in 2006,and are losing more and more money as each day goes by, so it will take more than a backhander by Tony and his cronies to keep them afloat.

WON'T THESE 'VIOLENT' TACTICS SCARE OFF POTENTIAL SUPPORTERS? We know that the violence is occur ring inside HLS on a daily basis as hundreds of beautiful animals are terrified and abused at the hands of their tormenters. lt is violent to force a tube down animals' throats or jab needles

into their veins and pour toxic poisons into their systems, it is depraved to poison animals and dispassionately make notes as they suffer and die, it is violent to kill and dismember puppies while other dogs sit waiting their turn, trembling in fear, it is abusive to punch dogs in the face while other people sit around laughing- these people are monsters and they are the violent ones, not us. We should never apologise for taking action as we see fit to end the abuse they carry out on a daily basis and put an end to the suffering they cause. Did people stand outside the gates of Auschwitz and ask politely for the Jews to be released? Did they sign petitions in South Africa for the end of apartheid? lt is an insult to every animal that has ever suffered and died inside the hell that is HLS, and to all those beautiful creatures inside their cages now, to do anything less than your utmost to bring about the destruction of that evil company, and to support wholeheartedly those willing to put their liberty on the line and their personal desires to one side in order to wage war against HLS. If you do not support or believe in SHAC's tactics and methodology, we ask that you do us a favour and ask to be taken off the mailing list. Please don't waste our time and money - this newsletter is not something to glance through and put aside - it is a call to arms and meant to inspire you to take effective action for the animals, and if you are not prepared to fight for them, or support those who are, then let us know.

Dr JERRY VLASAK M.D., FACS Heart surgeon Jerry Vlasak is a practicing heart surgeon from America. He is a brave and outspoken supporter of the campaign, and works with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in America and other scientific anti-vivisection organizations worldwide. Jerry shows that you can be a respected member of the scientific community and yet support direct action. SHAC would like to thank Jerry for all his wonderful support. This is what Jerry has to say about HLS :

nThe brutality that has been documented during 5 separate undercover investigations at Huntingdon life Sciences does more than cause animals to suffer - it adversely affects the outcome of the tests. Animal tests under such stress from the

documented abuses do not demonstrate consistent results, and yield data that is scientifically and medically useless. HLS laboratories are defrauding their customers, wasting valuable healthcare resources and abusing animals unnecessarily. It is no wonder that they have not been able to turn a profit in more than 3 years, had to sell their physical plant to raise cash and were days from filing for bankruptcy. HLS is the worst and most fraudulent testing facility that I know about at the present time. Animals tortured by employees for fun, disgusting conditions for the animals and of course a horrible and painful death for nothing more than the greed of this company."

"ITALY- On the night of September 14th some animal rights moles dug holes and made different damages at a golf course where Marsh had booked a tournament on sunday the 15th. The watering system has been damaged with water running all around. On a wall a graffiti has been spraypainted: Marsh insures vivisection - stop HLS - Animal Liberation Front." SHAG wou ld like to make it clear that all the demo and ALF reports printed in the newsletter are received by us anonymously.

OH DEAR! When SHAC heard that Andrew Gay from HLS would be attending the "7th Annual Total Risk Management" Conference to speak to other businesses about Huntingdon's failure to manage the crisis that is the HLS Campaign, we got on the phone to the event organizers. Once they realized that having Andrew Gay at their event was a risk they would have to manage they were

quick to kick him off the event schedule and vow that no one from HLS would be attending.

They made the following statement: "Further to our conversation, I can confirm that Huntingdon Life Sciences have been removed from the conference agenda with immediate effect. Andrew Gay will not be presenting at the conference, and no member of HLS will be attending the conference. We have also removed the session, company and speaker details from

Animal? Liberation? Most people recognize these two words but almost no-one understands their meaning. For if you did then you would do something about it. When we talk of winning animal liberation we mean just that. Fight for it, battle for it, go to prison for it, win it. Don't waste time talking about it, drinking down the pub for it, eating veggie burgers for it. Go out there and win it. For some of us animal liberation is a war that we intend to win. If we fail it won't be because we didn't try our hardest to or because we didn't care enough. For some of us the tears are real, our hearts really do break and we are prepared to die for it, not just chant for it. If you don't act then you condone. If you don't fight then you don't win. And if you don't win then you are responsible for the death and suffering that will go on and on. The animals don't give a damn how we win or even why, all they want is freedom and life now. The movement is just people, it's you and me, it's all of us. We are the movement and every one of us is so important. Without any one of us the movement is weaker and poorer for the loss. Without all of us the movement ceases to exist. Who will then care about the animals? We can free the animals, change the world and create justice for all. All we have to do is try, all we have to do is care, all we have to do is fight. Let us not forget Beagles what we have achieved and let us liberated move forward now and win from HLS's freedom for the animals." supplier

SAVE THE NEWCHURCH GUINEA PIGS Guinea pigs are the third most commonly used animals in vivisection. Their fast breeding rate, small size, cheapness to buy and docile personality make them an ideal tool to be manipulated and abused in labs in Britain and throughout the world. Every year over 70 000 guinea pigs are tortured to death in British labs in a variety of painful and useless experiments which include rubbing corrosive chemicals and substances onto their sensitive skin and forcing them to breathe noxious chemicals.

under. If they manage to survive these horrendous conditions the guinea pigs' prize is to end up in hell, otherwise known as HLS.

Huntingdon Life Sciences uses and kills a vast number of these tiny creatures every year, testing everything from sweeteners to pesticides to drugs, the like of which have already saturated the market. HLS buy their guinea pigs from David Hall & Partners in Newchurch, Staffordshire, a farm that is itself a hot bed of animal cruelty and a family-run company that not only supplies the lab but also holds 50,000 shares in Huntingdon Life Sciences.

But there is hope. If the labs can't get hold of the animals, then they can't torture them to death, which is why the campaign to Save the Newchurch Guinea Pigs was set up three years ago. Within this time the Hall family's world has been turned upside down and their life of decadence, arrogance and greed has come to an end with few people willing to visit them except the police and security guards, leaving them with an abnormal existence. Their work force is dissolving away after eight people have left and they find it harder and harder to replace them. But these are hardened animal abusers who will cling on as long as they can continue to squeeze a profit from the blood of the guinea pigs

In this Newchurch farm the guinea pigs are born into cramped and filthy pens where the mortality rate is so high that dead and dying babies have to be removed from the pens every day. Many are partially eaten by their own mothers - a sign of the stress these normally attentive creatures are

NCS • NATIONAL CLOWN SQUAD The recent antics of the NCS (National Crime Squad) in closing down our PO Box and then the BM Box have certainly backfired on them and their friends at HLS. Since the last newsletter alerting you to the forced change of address and the reason why, there have literally been hundreds of messages expressing outrage and disgust at the actions of the National Crime Squad. In the mail we have received recently there are numerous examples of how you are turning your anger into positive action: "I would normally

HLS may be running abroad to escape animal rights campaigners in the UK, but it is not hard to stay on their tail. International customers, HLS sales offices and US based market makers are not as far away as one might think. Can you imagine what will go through their heads when offices in Japan, India and the US suddenly find out that the british voice on the end of their phone is in fact a committed animal lover! As de-regulation reaches the telephone industry there are a number of companies offering ways of making much cheaper international phone calls. These work in several ways. Either you buy a phone card which provides you with a PIN number to enter before you dial. Or you simply prefix a number to the one you are dialing.ln some cases, this re-

routes you through an exchange which hides your telephone number from the person you are calling. While the BT phonecards are still very expensive there are increasing numbers of alternatives. One of the best are the Post Office phonecards available at your local branch. These offer good savings - 92% for calls to the USA (42p per minute); 74% for India (39p per minute); 90% for Germany (5p per minute). Note however, that if you use public pay phones then there is a 15p per minute surcharge on top. For more info contact the post office on 0808 182 7077, or pick up a leaflet on phone-cards from your local post office.
