EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Dear Congressional Community, The 2012-2013 school year was an important one for Congressional. We moved forward as a school in a tremendous way, and we accomplished much as a community. In 2013 the Strategic Planning committee worked collaboratively to assess the school’s mission, history, prior Strategic Plan, goals and priorities and developed a draft Plan to be shared with the community for feedback. Our goal is to present the final Strategic Plan – a blueprint for our future - in January 2014.

Our technology department has worked diligently to continue to integrate technology into the classroom, to upgrade our infrastructure and to make technology accessible to our students and faculty throughout the curriculum. In March of 2013 our faculty received iPads as an additional tool for teaching. The teachers were trained, and provided ongoing instruction and support to facilitate an effective integration of these digital devices. At the end of the 2012-2013 fiscal year, we were ready to roll-out the iPad program to students.

We established a number of cross-divisional committees this year to evaluate and assess certain areas and subjects within our academic program. Each committee was provided a charge statement as a guide and each

formulated recommendations to help enhance and strengthen the program. One of the results of these self-evaluations included a recommendation by the Math Committee to adopt the Singapore Math program for Senior Kindergarten through Grade 5. In the fall of 2013 we formally adopted the program and hired a Math Specialist to work with our students and faculty on the integration of this highly engaging and challenging program.

Our Service Learning Committee of seven faculty members from Early Childhood, Lower and Middle School evaluated the service projects that had taken place both in and out of school with a goal of defining the purpose and mission of this program. Derek Bowley became our Service Learning Coordinator, and has led the school through a number of service learning initiatives, helping our students to reach and assist others within our community, locally, nationally and globally.

After an in-depth compensation analysis, we raised our starting faculty salaries by 21% and this year, the majority of faculty received compensation increases between 2% and 22%.

Annual Giving funds were earmarked towards this initial increase, and we have moved to a compensation model that is highly competitive when compared to local public and independent schools, placing us in a much stronger position to attract and retain the highest caliber faculty.

We recognize that a strong professional development program directly benefits our students and significantly enhances our school culture. In 2013, a budget was established for Faculty Summer Fellowships, which was supplemented by over $10,000 that was generously donated by the Congressional School Parents Organization. The response by our faculty was tremendous, and proposals for a wide-range of professional development opportunities came flooding in.

It is without question that the remarkable experience of our students, campers, and faculty during the 2012-2013 year would not have been possible without the strong support of our parents, alumni, grandparents and friends of Congressional. Contained within the pages of this annual report you will see the names those who demonstrated their commitment to our school through their generous philanthropic support and donations of time and talent.

The camp program enjoyed another robust summer, with increased enrollment and our Academic Summer Classes have continued to grow in popularity. Our phenomenal campus resources, and wide-range of programming options, all within the Beltway, provide us with an enormous competitive advantage.
