Ever since 19U2, Paul Gurry has been educating magicians to the proposition that people are intuitively equipped to distinguish red cards from black cards with an accuracy undreamed of by Professor Jo Bo Rhine or even by the 90-9$% correct Joseph Dunningero Revolutionary in concept and brilliant in its simplicity of operation, wOut of this World" has been hailed as a magical classic - and, certainly by those standards, it is one trick deserving of that title.

r The following trick, obviously inspired by "Out of this World", since it is essentially a color-separation effect, makes no attempt to improve on its illustrious predecessor,, or even compete with ito Rsther, it hopes to stand on its individual merits, such as they may be, and it is hoped that the reader will try it out often under varying conditions to test its effectivenesso In order to establish clearly the principles involved, the effect, as originally conceived, will be given firstÂť Various refinements, suggestions, and technical niceties will be found on later pages for those inclined to become thoroughly familiar \vith the trick's possibilitieso In effect, a packet of playing cards is shown and mixed by the performer, so that face-up and face-down cards are intermingledo A spectator places the packet behind his back (orP if at a table, out of sight under the table), also reversing cards and adding to the disarranpment0 A procedure is then followed, wherein the spectator brings out every other card and places it on the tableo It is no surprise that the cards come out both face up and face down, but it is odd to see the spectator exhibiting a marked color preference, for all of the cards face up are cards of the same color % Even though the spectator continues to mix the cards to his satisfaction before bringing them forward, the end result, when the packet has been exhausted, is that there is a distinct color separation by the face-up and face-down cards I Twenty cards, consisting of ten reds and ten blacks, are arranged so that the colors alternate (that is, red, black, red, black, red, black, etco)o They may be shown without fear of discovery of the consistent color arrangement if it is merely mentioned that they are cards from a standard decko The cards are given to a spectator, who places them behind his back.

If he is seated at a table, the spectator may place his hands under the table for somewhat easier manipulationo He is instructed by the performer to cut the packet at any point, reverse the top two cards (so that they are face up), cut the deck again, reverse the top two cards again, and to continue doing this until he is satisfied that the cards have been sufficiently disarranged,.
