FOREWORD Every trick in this book has been chosen for two qualities—the maximum of effectiveness and mystification and the minimum requirement of skill or sleight of hand. Simplicity in execution has been kept in mind throughout, so that any and every one will be able to perform all the tricks in the book after a short period of practice. No elaborate apparatus is needed in connection with any of the tricks, and most of them can be performed at any time and at any place with the common objects which can always be obtained.

TRICKS WITH RINGS

THE DISAPPEARING RING is one of the simplest methods to cause a ring or coin to disappear when you are performing without apparatus or in a strange house. Get a small rubber band, or if one of the small size is not obtainable, use an ordinary sized one and double it to make it smaller. The rubber band is secretly placed over the thumb and forefinger of the left hand, and a handkerchief is thrown over the hand to cover it. The ring is then placed in the center of the handkerchief, the thumb and forefinger of the left hand grasp it through the handkerchief and slip the rubber band over it, thus enclosing it in a little pocket whose mouth is closed by the rubber band. A pretense may be made of folding the handkerchief 3
