Most noteworthy conversations in Savannah take place in bars. A week or so ago I had one such talk with a gentleman who moved here from another notable Southern city, one which like ours is majority black with majority white suburbs.

He described to me how about fifteen years ago his beautiful city was full of promise, full of potential, full of cafes and restaurants and new businesses and vibrant downtown street life.

Like Savannah is now.

Then, he related, there was a particularly nasty dispute in city government that was split along racial lines.

Then another. And another. And another.

Once it started, he said, no one seemed able or willing to stop it.

“Think of the stories you’re reading in the paper now about Savannah politics,” he said.

“Now imagine reading that every single morning for fifteen years straight.”

When the national economic downturn came, his hometown was by then already riven by deep–seated racial animosity, just as it once was in the ‘60s.

His city’s now in sad decline: Downtown hurting, businesses closing or leaving, crime on the increase, ugly and very personal racial politics dominating every aspect of city life.

Don’t deceive yourself into thinking the same can’t happen here, the man told me.

“When I moved to Savannah the biggest issue here was armbands on St. Patrick’s Day,” he said. “But that could change overnight.”

The ongoing saga over who will be Savannah’s next city manager could — should?

— come to an end at the next City Council meeting, when elected officials have an opportunity to try once more to find some way forward, however dissatisfying to many voters.

My friend at the bar had a solution, one based on his years of bitter experience in another once-promising Southern city: “One of the white council members just needs to bite the bullet and vote for her.”

By “her,” of course he meant that in the interest of unity and consensus, one or more white aldermen need to put their pride aside and vote to hire Rochelle Small–Toney.

Otherwise the ugly racial aspect of this dispute will begin to affect all local politics in the future, to the detriment of everyone who lives, works, runs a business, and pays taxes here.

If she doesn’t work out, he said, we can fire her after a few years — as is the case with just about every other city manager in the country at some point or another anyway.

However bitter a pill to swallow, having a less–than–optimum city manager for awhile is still much better than racial strife which will eventually hollow out the local economy in ways much more profound than any screw–up Small–Toney could make.

The bottom line is this: Small–Toney may not be everyone’s first choice in a city manager candidate. She’s not even my first choice.

But she is technically qualified for the job, and sometime’s that’s got to be good enough.

The bond “issue” is a non–issue: Contrary to a lot of misinformation out there, as of this writing there is currently no city ordinance requiring Small–Toney to have a million dollar personal bond. (The only required bond is a $50,000 one, which she has secured.)

And however inflammatory were Mayor Otis Johnson’s recent videotaped remarks to a black audience at a local church — majority rule means fifty percent plus one, Johnson said from the pulpit, and “we’ve got six percentage points to spare” — the truth is he’s right.

There is a black majority in Savannah, and if those voters want a black city manager badly enough, they’re going to get one regardless.

It’s ironic and deeply disappointing that Mayor Johnson, who built his career on fighting for civil rights — which is all about protecting the rights of the minority against tyranny by the majority — would, late in life and flush with power, so completely embrace the tyrant’s motto of “might makes right.”

But the time to complain is over. Now it’s time for others to show the wisdom that Johnson has refused to display. Sometimes leadership is about knowing when “fighting the good fight” means surviving to fight another day.

The wise move right now — if not the most satisfying one — would be for Council to reconsider Alderman Clifton Jones’ recent unseconded motion to hire Small–Toney.

At least one white alderman needs to cross over, so that the vote cannot be described with those three horrific words, “along racial lines.”

And then we move on.

Sometimes wisdom takes unusual forms, and comes from unexpected places. cs

Promise of new port jobs is bogus Editor, Contrary to statements in print and broadcast news coverage, officials responsible for analyzing the controversial Savannah harbor deepening do not assert that new jobs will be created by the project.

Thus, public opinion about the $600 million undertaking is being driven by false assumptions that are reported as fact, compelling political support based on unsound speculation.

Unfortunately, this bandwagon mentality has become far too

common, resulting in billions of wasted tax dollars being squandered on unjustified projects.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers justifies the project solely on their assertion that moving commodities with the larger vessels to be accommodated by deepening will reduce shipping costs.

According to a Corps economist assigned to analyzing the project, there is no rationale that builds a case that new jobs will be created as a result of the deepening.

In fact, by being more efficient in terms of cost per ton, including automated commodity handling, the future job–growth curve could

be lower than without the project.

At a December 2010 meeting of the Stakeholder Evaluation Group deliberating the project, Corps economist Bernard Moseby said that under their guidelines they are required to convert projected economic benefits into the “equivalent value” in jobs even if no additional jobs are expected.

When questioned, he agreed that there is no analysis by the Corps finding that new jobs will be produced by the project.

During a period when state and federal officials must be especially prudent in making decisions about wisely spending limited

government funds, it is imperative that well–reasoned analysis prevails, not wishful thinking.

Reckless hearsay about the harbor project does not support fiscally responsible decision–making, which is so urgently needed.

If the public is deeply misinformed by inaccurate reporting, our political institutions – already inclined toward uninformed “group–think” – will become even less capable of responsible budgeting decisions.

11th District State Senator John Bulloch introduced a bill, known as SB 10, earlier this year. SB 10 would have given municipalities the right to hold referendums on whether to allow retailers to sell alcohol on Sundays.

“How much closer can you get to democracy than letting the people make that decision?” Bulloch asked during a conversation by phone last week.

Ironically, it was the state’s dominant majority of Republicans, who were elected with campaign rhetoric proclaiming the virtues of smaller government, personal liberty and opposition to the “liberal nanny–state,” that have now silenced the bill without so much as a vote.

With the exception of the Sunday retail prohibition, alcohol sales are regulated almost exclusively at the local level, and communities are able to determine whether alcohol is sold and when.

“It’s controlled locally the other six days of the week,” says Jim Tudor, who leads the Georgia Association of Convenience Stores, a professional organization that supported the legislation. “The idea that the seventh day shouldn’t be controlled locally runs against the grain of how we control alcohol in our state.”

Although the bill was not a mandate on Sunday sales, seeking instead to give

communities the right of self–determination on the issue, SB 10 drew the ire of religious groups, including the Georgia Christian Coalition (GCC), whose campaign of emails and phone calls roused the faithful to take action.

“Sunday is so much like a Saturday, it creates additional disorder,” says Jerry Luquire, the head of the GCC. “It’s all the bad that a few people can do with alcohol increased from Saturday to include Sunday. That’s why we’re opposing it.”

Georgia has a long and curious history when it comes to the prohibition of alcohol. Hard liquor was contraband in the new colony according to the dictums of James Oglethorpe (a rule broken almost as soon as it was decreed), and in the 1930s Georgia adopted total prohibition of alcohol well before the Temperance movement scored a victory at the national level.

Over the past several decades the old laws have been eroded largely by local control, one example being on–premise sales in restaurants and hybrid establishments, allowed in some places but not others around the state.

Sunday retail is the last piece of the puzzle, and has been a sticky issue in the state Legislature for several years.

“I didn’t feel like in the past four years, that this particular piece of legislation got a fair shake from the committee that it was in, so we debated it in a different committee,” Bulloch says. “It passed that committee.”

Until last week, SB 10 had been sailing smoothly through the legislative process. The bill had passed committee hearings, and was ready to be sent to the Rules Committee, who would set a date for a vote.

Its progress was derailed suddenly last Thursday following a caucus meeting of Senate Republicans, who decided the bill didn’t have the necessary support, essentially killing it before it could reach the floor.

The procedure was unprecedented in recent memory, Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle told the Atlanta Journal Constitution last week.

The legislation could have provided much needed revenue for the state, particularly if referendums had been passed by border communities like Savannah and Augusta, where Sunday alcohol purchases drift across the Savannah River into South Carolina.

“Every Sunday they bleed sales into these other states because it’s a convenience issue,” says Ben Jenkins, Vice President of State Government Communications with the Distilled Spirits Council (DSC), a national trade association.

“Since 2002, states that have repealed their Sunday sales bans have seen on average a 5–7% tax revenue increase, which obviously is terrific revenue alternative to raising taxes in a difficult economy.”

According to data provided by the DSC based on estimates from other states who’ve passed local option Sunday sales, the change could have meant about four million dollars in state revenue from liquor alone, and even more with beer and wine included.

Luquire dismisses concerns about potential state revenues, arguing that if people are concerned about taxes they should tax lottery tickets: “Everyone is spending a dollar on a 10 million to one chance, what’s another seven cents?”

While the GCC won’t try to end retail sales on other days of week, they are committed to maintaining status quo.

“Keep it in the bottle,” Luquire says.

“Things are fine now. People can live without it, but a lot people can’t live with it.”

Supporters of Sunday sales find the opposite to be true.

“The government shouldn’t be in the business of mandating what day is the Sabbath,” says Jenkins. “Religious conservatives may choose not to drink or buy alcohol on Sunday. There are other people out there that would like to.”

There is a separate bill in state’s House of Representatives that would allow a local option referendum. However, if it is unable to pass the Senate, neither bill could reach the Governor’s desk. cs

Truth is stranger than fiction

A man called police to report a person with a knife. It was later determined to be a “threat to injure” call.

The complainant told the officer on the scene that he had been walking home through the area of Montgomery Street and 42nd Street when he saw a white male following him.

The complainant said he grabbed his knife because he feared he was going to be mugged. However, the white male turned down another street. At that point, with the knife still closed in his hand, a male prostitute dressed as a woman saw the man and told him he had a knife too. The complainant never actually saw the knife. The prostitute told the man he would cut him up, which is when the call was made to the police. Officers were unable to locate the suspect to get his side of the story.

• A woman called police to report that the family’s babysitter had confessed to stealing a couple thousand dollars from the family over the course of the last eight months. The complainant told the officer that her children had reported missing money to their parents, who then began to search the rest of the house, discovering that an envelope containing $2500 was missing from the master bedroom. The woman texted the babysitter about it, and she confessed, saying that she had been in “a bind.” The babysitter’s family contacted the complainant and said that the girl had been checked into a mental health institution for “help,” but did not identify which facility. The woman was advised of warrant procedures. She told police she wanted to press charges for theft.

• While on patrol, an officer found a man stumbling through the middle of the street and obstructing traffic.

The man was “highly intoxicated.” He smelled strongly of alcohol, his pants were partially undone, and his belt was unbuckled. He could barely stand and

his speech was slurred. The officer asked the man to get out of the road and get into a taxi. The man ignored the officer and began aggressively pursuing several females who were entering a nearby club. The man continued to refuse to get in a cab or buckle his pants.

He was arrested for public intoxication.

• Police were called to a residence where an Alzheimer’s patient was out of control. The officer spoke with the man’s wife. She said that he had started taking some new medication that morning, and that it had caused him to become disorderly. At one point, he hit her in the head with the telephone because he could not get in touch with his mother.

She advised police that he wasn’t intentionally violent and was not aware of his actions. The officer spoke with the man who was “very confused and disoriented.” The man was transported to the hospital for additional care.

• Officers were dealing with a suspicious vehicle in the area of Congress and Whitaker Streets when they noticed three people on the ground fighting. It was around three a.m. The officer ordered them to stop.

One subject walked away.

Two others continued to fight. The officer pulled one away, and the suspect began to flail and kick at the officer. The officer sprayed him with mace and the man stopped resisting. A second officer arrived to help escort the suspect to a nearby cruiser. A crowd formed around the scene and someone threw a beer at the police vehicle, which resulted in both officers being sprayed with beer.

The beer thrower was arrested for disorderly conduct. EMS arrived to treat the guy who got sprayed with mace. Both were jailed without further incident. cs Give anonymous crime tips to Crimestoppers at 234-2020

• “That Was Easy!”: (1) Several students at Texas’ Carrizo Springs High School were suspended in December, and a teacher placed on leave, after a parent complained that her son had been grabbed by the shirt and stapled to a classroom wall. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an MP3 on the â&#x20AC;&#x2122;net right now purporting to be a â&#x20AC;&#x153;North Dakota weather alertâ&#x20AC;? in which some reject from Fargo warns, â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is f â&#x20AC;&#x2122;ing cold outside. Stay inside, dumbass. You will freeze your balls off.â&#x20AC;? When I was growing up in upstate Pennsylvania, my father used to declare this would be the fate of a brass monkey exposed to the kind of cold we had in the mountains. The question is, has any poor soul ever actually lost the family jewels to frostbite and survived? â&#x20AC;&#x201D;Matt Short answer first. I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t turned up any confirmed reports of family jewel loss. On the other hand, the family scepter, as it were . . . letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s say a few unfortunate individuals have come painfully close.

Now for the long answer. Implicit in the saying about brass monkeys is the sense that some male creatures are at greater risk than others of hypothermic genital separation. Clearly there are multiple issues in this seemingly simple question. Specifically: (a) Did it happen? (b) What happened exactly, to whom or what, to which extremity specifically, and under what conditions? (c) What was this poor soul/hapless beast/ sad sack (sorry) up to when it did?

We turn to the case reports, organized by increasing degree to which the subjectsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; plight strikes close to home: Brass monkeys. Data on component failure among these proverbial simians are lacking. However, we find that brass valves work just fine on tanks of liquid nitrogen, which is typically chilled to around minus 320 degrees Fahrenheit.

From this we extrapolate that, for a brass monkey, the odds of accidental cryoorchiectomy are vanishingly small.

Bulls. More commonly the victims of sheer heart-stopping frigidity arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ornamental metal animals but real ones, in particular bulls wintering outdoors in places like, yes, North Dakota.

Ranchersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; bulletins and such are full of warnings about the dangers of scrotal frostbite. Although I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come across a case of the affected organs

literally falling off, serious damage does happenâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;bulls can become sterile. The critical weather conditions: subzero temperatures plus strong wind.

Dogs. Specifically, Alaskan sled dogs, said to do their best work between 20 above and 20 below and who happily pull a sled a hundred miles. Leave it to their owners to decide they should race a thousand miles and freeze their tender vittles in the process. The event in question is the Iditarod, the annual dogsled race between Anchorage and Nome, decried by critics as an exercise in animal cruelty. Often the majority of dogs on a team donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t finish due to exhaustion or injury (by one count more than 140 have died), and scrotal and penile frostbite are indeed among the many perils.

The miracle is that casualties are so few.

Guys. The classic account was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1977 by a 53-year-old MD named Melvin Hershkowitz, who plied his trade in the frontier outpost of Jersey City. Hershkowitz reports that the previous December heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d gone to a local park for his half-hour jog. Temperature: 18 degrees with a bitter wind chill. He was less than ideally dressed, wearing â&#x20AC;&#x153;flare-bottom double-knit polyester trousers, Dacron-cotton boxer-style undershorts, a cotton T-shirt and cotton dress shirt, a light-wound sweater, an outer nylon shell jacket . . . , gloves, and low-cut Pro Ked sneakers.â&#x20AC;?

Twenty-five minutes into his run Hershkowitz began feeling â&#x20AC;&#x153;an unpleasant painful burning sensation at the penile tip,â&#x20AC;? which within five minutes had become excruciating. Returning home, he found â&#x20AC;&#x153;early frostbite of the penis. The glans was rigid, red, tender upon manipulation and anesthetic [i.e., insensitive] to light touch. Immediate therapy was begun.â&#x20AC;?

This meant restoring the apparatus to warmth via manual contact. Full recovery took 15 minutes and would have been uneventful except that at minute 10 Hershkowitzâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife showed up and found him â&#x20AC;&#x153;standing, legs apart, in the bedroom, nude below the waist, holding the tip of his penis in his right hand, turning the pages of the New England Journal of Medicine with his left.â&#x20AC;?

Things could have been worse.

One hears of similarly stricken joggers whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had penile skin slough off, which may not be brass monkey syndrome exactly but is closer than Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d care to get. cs CECIL ADAMS

Two weeks ago, the Grascals won Instrumental Group of the Year, band member Danny Roberts took Mandolin Performer of the Year, with Banjo Performer of the Year going to Kristin Scott Benson. This was at the annual SPBGMA Bluegrass Music Awards in Nashville.

In 2006 and 2007, the Grascals won the International Bluegrass Music Association’s coveted Entertainer of the Year award. The band’s Country Classics With a Bluegrass Spin – a Cracker Barrel exclusive – is the top–selling bluegrass album in the country this month (the record features duets with the likes of Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley and others).

They had long and quite fruitful associations with both Dolly Parton and Hank Williams Jr. And – talk about your clash of cultures – on Feb. 2, the Grascals played a salute–to–the–troops show in Dallas with none other than Kiss’ fire–breathing Gene Simmons (Little Texas and Five For Fighting were also on the bill).

There’s been a change visible on the streets of Savannah — tighter pants, fixed gear bicycles and an oversaturation of irony.

All the telltale signs of a hipster invasion.

With these gangs of coffee– fueled, cookie–cutter creatives wandering the streets, there is an increasing risk of violence against the hip and un–hip alike — a painful thought that is all too fresh in the minds of the local super–group When Hipsters Attack.

Featuring members of groups like Pilot Scott Tracey, Hot Pink Interior and others, the band’s sound could be the soundtrack for the imminent hipster wars — like the post–apocalyptic scene in Terminator 2, but with hipsters instead of metallic, humanoid robots — a high energy mix of punk, pop and keyboards that will surely resonate with fans of Devo (who might be partially to blame for this whole mess in the first place).

Their debut, which takes place at the Jinx on Saturday night, is rumored to also feature a hipster pageant, which will crown Mr. and Ms. Hipster of Savannah — a distinguished honor that may end with bloodshed.

Because of elaborate staging needs, When Hipsters Attack will play first Saturday night, followed by local, live hip hop band KidSyc@Brandywine.

We spoke with band member Scott Stanton to get some tips on what to expect and how to survive When Hipsters Attack.

What would happen if hipsters were to attack? What is their weapon of choice?

Scott Stanton: If they were to attack?

They have already attacked, my friend.

They’ve been around long enough now that they’ve bred, and we’re witnessing multiple generations of damage. They can certainly attack in overt, violent ways but it’s the more subtle ways we’ll really be feeling for a long time. As far as weapons go, they use anything at their disposal... iPhones, bike locks, scarves, moustache wax...

What sorts of things incite hipsters to attack?

Scott Stanton: Anything they deem as not part of their agenda and that would be anything not hip. I know they really detest the U.S.A. The only thing they see in the American Flag is a potential fashion statement.

What is the best way to stop a hipster, or group of hipsters, once they’ve started to attack?

Scott Stanton: I have found that shame works best. You might be surprised to know that they often hide great insecurities behind their costume. Shame and embarrassment are the quickest ways to snuff out their fire.

Do hipsters ever attack each other, or do they usually end up attacking non–hipsters?

Scott Stanton: I believe that different sects of hipsters attack each other daily so they can prove they are indeed the chosen hipster. In this way, hostility is key to the hipster lifestyle. A hipster proves himself hip only by distinguishing himself from peers, so there’s a constant battle to establish this pecking order. No one is safe.

How many hipsters would it take to defeat Chuck Norris in a fight?

Scott Stanton: I do not think they would consider defeating Chuck Norris.

They are looking at the bigger picture.

Scott Stanton: Hipsters attacked us when we played in the Brooklyn area. There was a booking mistake and the crowd thought they were getting one thing and they got us. At the time we were more of a jam band doing popular covers. We were playing with a band called Dracula WeakDays and that crowd was not into us at all. They attacked us, and our bass player wears a neck brace to this day. I cannot say much more about the event because it is still in litigation. But I can tell you that we’ve learned to be better prepared and we plan to have a few rabid hipsters of our own this time — ready if we need them.

What made you guys get together and start playing? Is this a one–time deal or a new ongoing project?

Scott Stanton: The fact that we got attacked in the Brooklyn area made us come home and try to make music that hipsters might like. Not sure how long we will be a band. If the hipsters attack us again this will be a one time deal. If not we will go on and record an album and tour the U.S. and Europe.

We will most likely meet someone at a show and sign a major label deal and everything will be awesome.

What qualities do you expect from the winner of the Mr./Ms. Hipster Savannah pageant?

There’s a specific art to creating uncompromising rock music without it coming out all sloppy and/or pedestrian and/or cheesy. Raleigh’s Birds of Avalon is a guitar–based band that blasts a psychedelic wall of sound, with elements of Hendrix, Zeppelin, the Beatles and even the Kinks peeking through the fuzzy sheen and screaming histrionics. Which isn’t all that surprising, considering the band’s been working with the legendary Mitch Easter, who made supple but sturdy masterworks out of the early R.E.M. records (and with his own project, the criminally underrated Let’s Active). Ritchie Young, of Portland, Oregon, sometimes plays as a solo, and sometimes as the focal point of a band that includes nine or more musicians. Either way, it’s his deal: An intoxicating marriage of lyrically–focused folk–pop and hard–headed emotionalism. It’s chamber pop via acoustic and electric guitars, bass clarinet, mandolin, theremin, tasty percussion and a rich resource–well of vocals, not the least of which belongs to Young himself – an extraordinary instrument with a fiery range. Loch Lomond, to this writer, is reminiscent of the Decemberists – not surprising, then, to learn that Young and company were once invited to open a tour for Colin Meloy’s snarky and tart–tongued band.

With a music festival, family and friends remember a young man of infinite promise

His friends called him A–Town. Sometimes they just called him Schmalex.

Alex Townsend was a free–spirited, fun–loving graphic design sophomore at SCAD. He was tall, long–haired and sharp–eyed, with a quick sense of humor. He played the drums, and had an unabashed love for live music and festival–style concerts.

On Valentine’s Day, 2010, Alex was killed when he lost control of his car and hit a tree on Abercorn Street. He was 21 years old.

On Saturday, a little more than a year after Alex’s death, his friends and family will pay tribute with a multi–performer concert at Savannah Station. With Word of Mouth, The Malah, graffiti artist Peat Wolleager and others, the event is called A–Town Get Down.

All net proceeds will go to Savannah non–profit organizations.

“He grew up in St. Louis, but he always had this huge affinity for the South and the Southeast,” says Alex’s father, Missouri–based advertising writer Tom Townsend. “That was one reason that Savannah was such a cool place to him. He just thought Savannah was awesome.”

Alex, his dad says, was a gifted illustrator who felt right at home in Savannah’s artistic community. “I wouldn’t have been surprised if he ended up in an ad agency as an art director,” Townsend says. “When he was younger, he said he

wanted to work at my agency.

“But I was always encouraging him to not just limit himself to what he knows and sees, but to get a feel for everything else that’s out there. Because he was so into music, and illustration. I wanted him to make sure that he didn’t just default to what he understood better.”

Heather Locke was one of Alex’s closest friends; they met here during their very first week as SCAD students. “I think bringing all of our friends together in something like a music festival would really mean a lot to Alex,” she explains. “He really loved live music in general. It’s something we all loved, together.”

Alex, Locke says with a smile, was “crazy, he was always crazy. He was always out there. He was like the wild child of our friends. And I really think that’s how I met all of my friends, through Alex. He befriended each of us at some different time, and we all just started hanging out.

“He probably thought of the consequences sometimes, but he lived for the ‘right now,’ the ‘let’s have fun,’ the ‘what are we doing?’”

Also performing at the Get Down is veteran guitarist Walter Parks and his band, Swamptronics. Parks, who played for many years alongside folk icon Richie Havens, is a childhood friend of Tom Townsend’s.

“I always took Alex to hear Walter whenever he was playing in the area,” Townsend says. “Sometimes I even called Alex ‘Walter,’ because Walter was just a crazy, funny spirit as a kid. Very much like Alex.”

When his son started talking about a career in illustration, or perhaps audio engineering, Tom would introduce him to Parks, the professional, road–tested artist, as “the real thing,” somebody the young man ought to pay attention to.

A month before Alex’s accident, Parks and his family relocated to Savannah. The two had made tentative plans to get together.

“At the funeral, Walter spoke and self–deprecatingly said he wished he had the improvisational spirit that Alex had,” Townsend recalls. “He said that he felt Alex was more of the ‘real thing’ than he was.”

It’s awful, losing a child. The day Alex died, Tom Townsend declared – in front of Alex’s friends – that there would be a Savannah concert in his memory. He figures the young people probably thought it was no more than the desperate wail of a grieving father.

It took him a year, but he made good on his promise.

It still doesn’t make the pain go away.

“I don’t know what happened inside that car,” Townsend says. “It wasn’t like him to get behind the wheel and drive crazy. There’s no question that alcohol was involved, but knowing him the way I did, he wasn’t the kind of guy to drink too much and then get crazy behind the wheel.

“He did constantly fidget with his iPod, and get frustrated with it, and I wouldn’t be surprised if maybe there was a complication like that. Maybe the alcohol slowed down his reflexes. The officers believe he hit the curb, barely, and then over–corrected. Sampling Antarctica

DJ Spooky took inspiration from the environment for his composition Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica

There’s no easy way to describe Paul Miller, aka DJ Spooky. A Renaissance man for the digital age, Spooky is a musician, a DJ, an author, an artist, and more recently, a global adventurer concerned with the consequences of climate change.

On Saturday, he stops in Savannah to be part of SCAD’s deFine Art series, during which he’ll perform Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica, a multi–media composition he created during a stay on the frozen continent.

While he wasn’t the first artist to step foot in Antarctica, he was likely the first DJ, and he spent his time pondering the expanse of ice in transition due to the effects of climate change.

Since completing Terra Nova, Spooky’s newest endeavor is a carbon–negative artist retreat on the South Pacific of Tanna (can’t blame a guy for wanting to warm up after a stay on the South Pole) in conjunction with the Vanuatu Pacifica Foundation.

We caught up with Spooky by email as he was en route from Asia to New Orleans last week.

Looking back on more than a decade of work, is there something specific to which you attribute your longevity and success in the fickle realms of art and music?

DJ Spooky: My music is all about ideas. I really never planned on doing “normal” music — I always viewed my work as a contemporary art initiative, so it was independent of the currents of the normal music scene. That’s just the way things have flowed. The way the economy is going, all musicians will really have to think not just about how

their music is consumed, but the tools that they use to really get their ideas and concepts out into the world.

With all of the different projects you’ve worked on recently, do you still have time to get down with a pair of turntables? Is ‘DJ’ really just a title that reflects your origins in the craft?

Or have you become a different sort of DJ, selecting not just music, but from a broader scope of culture/society?

DJ Spooky: I took a studio to Antarctica as an art project. How do you DJ the environment? How do you get people to really start thinking about climate change? It’s all connected. We just have to look for the patterns that overlap and see where the rhythms match. I look to connect the dots on this kind of stuff because it is a core “sample” for me — I guess you could say something like that is my original groove. What’s the “craft” in that? I guess you could call it the art of memory.

DJ Spooky: Ideas never lead to one thing – they’re hybrid. One of my favorite film directors is Christopher Nolan – I love what he did with Memento and Inception – web mixes, iPhone apps, satellite radio playlists, you name it: it’s all about navigating density.

My Antarctica symphony looks at these issues from the viewpoint of composing music that’s a mirror of climate change. That gives me a lot of room to think about how to present the work.

Your start as a DJ and a musician came long before the new generation of technologies like Serato, Ableton, social media and smart phones, etc.

Has emerging technology changed your creative methodology/output?

DJ Spooky: Nah, it’s still just mixing.

The best way to think about it is that the tools change, but ideas are still what drives it all.

Are you the first DJ to ever set foot in Antarctica? How did the journey match up to your expectations?

DJ Spooky: I do believe I’m the first DJ to go to Antarctica. But not the first artist. I love the idea of sampling the ice.

It’s just applying the same techniques I would to a record, but the record is the planet.

You do a lot of travelling. What is it about Antarctica, as opposed to other places you’ve visited, that inspired these compositions? Why Antarctica and not Detroit, or Texas or the South Pacific?

DJ Spooky: Remoteness and slowness.

It definitely ain’t downtown New York!

DJ Spooky: Over the next couple of years I will be doing alot of projects that explore different themes. The thing that links them all is just getting ideas to be front and center.

For me, it’s never “just music.” I just finished my next book and it was a collaboration with the quantum physics theoretician Brian Greene. String theory is fun!

Was that a conscious effort on your part, or was it a mix of opportunity and fortune that’s allowed you to take on such diverse projects?

Live onstage: A diverse trio of performances

Bridget Tunstall directs the Bay Street Theatre’s annual production of Eve Ensler’s insightful and incendiary The Vagina Monologues this weekend.

Playwright Ensler mandates that 10 percent of proceeds from community productions go to her V–Day charity (“A Global Movement to End Violence Against Women and Girls Worldwide”) and that the other 90 percent reaches a community group that benefits women.

The Bay Street production is donating this money to the Rape Crisis Center; last year’s donation was nearly $900.

The Vagina Monologues, Tunstall believes, is one of those shows that

deserves to be repeated. “Every year, different issues around the world for women come up,” she says. “And every time we have the show, we have new women participating in it, and new women that come and see it. So if more people get exposed, the more the message reaches.”

This year, the monologues will be performed by, among others, SCAD professor Krista Harborson and Bay Street veterans Cecelia Arrango and Kimmi Sampieri. “A large chunk of the cast, honestly, are students from the SCAD community who have never done it before,” Tunstall says.

Just a few weeks ago, Sheila Lynne directed Ensler’s The Good Body at Muse Arts Warehouse. This was by design, not by accident.

it worked out that we were able to do two Eve Ensler shows back–to–back,” says Tunstall. “And I thought that really worked well, in the scheme of planning.”

Rain - A Tribute to the Beatles comes to the Johnny Mercer Tuesday.

Savannah Black Heritage Festival, Visions is Abeni’s annual journey through history with African, modern, contemporary, jazz and hip hop dance.

“We always try to add something different each year, to make it a little bit better,” Miller explains. “We’ve added a little bit of dialogue and some more singing this year, as opposed to just dancing – there’s a lot of dancing, a little bit of singing and a little bit of acting.”

Participants come from Miller’s adult dance company, Kokomo Collective, from the youth company Ijaba Dance, and from the Little Miracles (students age 8 and younger).

If the Rain comes At the Johnny Mercer Theatre Tuesday night, it’s Rain – A Tribute to the Beatles. More than a tribute band (although, of course, that’s what it is at heart) this is a two–hour–plus performance that includes multi–media,

special effects and the like. It’s been a hit on Broadway for a year or two.

Rain goes the full monty, taking the lads from their jacket–and–tie Ed Sullivan period to the eccentric and long–haired look of the Abbey Road–era final days. Accordingly, there are numerous costume, wig and instrument changes.

As a lifelong, card–carrying Beatles addict, I’ve seen perhaps a dozen tribute bands over the years (currently, there are 50 of them in the United States alone). They’ve all varied in musical quality (and English accents, and choice of material, and other things), but what impresses me about Rain is that the band does an acoustic set. The Beatles themselves quit live performances in 1966, a full three years before they split up, so lots of their greatest late–period acoustic songs never got played live.

Therefore, if the the faux–Fab thing floats your boat, this could be the one.

The Barnard, a burger with Pepperjack cheese and bacon

Sometimes, you just gotta have a burger and a beer.

Such was the case a recent, sunny Saturday that found me grinding ever so slowly through Southside traffic.

I pulled out of the gridlock and into B&D Burgers’ Abercorn Street location. Being Saturday, the place was hopping with families and an impending birthday party.

The two–location, Savannah–based burger restaurant has done an excellent job of integrating the Savannah feeling into its decor, its theme and its menu.

More than two dozen custom burgers carry names familiar to anyone who knows the city.

I chose the Barnard, a burger with Pepperjack cheese and bacon.

Three burger sizes are available: one–third, one–half and a massive one–pounder. I chose the one–third size and was quite satisfied. It may be a little small for the nice, housemade, soft bun – but still stood and delivered on flavor.

Fresh, crisp lettuce, tomato and pickle slices were all the condiments I needed to accompany the generous, melted slice of cheese and two nice strips of bacon.

Hand–cut French fries accompanied – but diners also have the choice of sweet potato fries, seasoned curly fries or a “fry of the week.” Additional sides include onion rings, cole slaw or baked beans.

Not in a burger mood? Not to fear, there are plenty of other sandwich choices, a huge selection of salads and shrimp or chicken dishes.

I had a Sam Adams on draft, the closest the bar had to anything outside of the big domestic beers.

Attentive service, fast delivery and good, solid burgers – it’s a can’t miss combination!

Ode to the onion

Who cares about showing out of town visitors dolphins when just a short trip down the highway is the soon–to–open Vidalia Onion Museum!

I was recently lamenting that one of my favorite refreshing wine varietals, Sauvignon Blanc, had become tiresome for me.

My recent tastes have been predictable – grassy, green, citrusy. Refreshing, by all means – but the flavors from one maker to another had begun to run together.

Then I tried the newest vintage, 2009, from Napa Valley producer Franciscan.

There was still that brightness, that tartness that I find some appealing in Sauvignon Blanc. But there was more.

It wasn’t a blending grape – this is 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc...where are those notes...

Aaaah, that little touch of complexity, of roundness that I loved came from oak!

Oh, it’s not much mind you – especially when compared to the oak regimen of Franciscan’s Chardonnay. The Sauvignon Blanc bottling contains a scant 10 percent oaked juice – and then it’s aged in neutral French oak.

Neutral – that mans the oak has been used before and pretty much reached the end of its flavor–producing lifespan. Still, it’s just enough.

The lime and grapefruit notes are there, but a discerning palate will also detect vanilla, honeydew melon and juicy guava. A hint of minerality lends itself to a clean finish and a mouthwatering influence.

Franciscan is not a label that trips off the tongue, but has been making wines for more than three decades. Its current winemaker, Janet Myers, is clearly putting her mark on the wines and continuing a legacy with grace and self–confidence.

The Franciscan 2009 Chardonnay doesn’t hide away the fact that it spent seven months on oak – with 20 percent of the juice languishing in bold, new French barrels.

Frankly, I like the tactile strength of oak in my Chardonnay – although there must also be a carefully managed balance of fruit, minerality and acid. Apple and pear notes stand forward in this wine, and, of course, expect some creaminess, toastiness and silky mouthfeel that comes from oaked Chard.

I wasn’t that familiar with the Franciscan label, but be assured it will be on the watch list during future wine buying jaunts!

No sooner had we announced the upcoming April performance by motor–mouthed comedian Lisa Lampanelli than word arrived of another big–time female comic’s appearance in town.

Kathy Griffin will appear Saturday, May 28 in the Johnny Mercer Theatre.

Griffin, who published a (sort of) memoir, Official Book Club Selection, in 2009, is a familiar face to TV viewers for, among other things, her (sort of) reality series My Life on the D List. She’s had 13 HBO specials since 1996.

A polarizing comedian, she’s no favorite of the conservative Republican crowd, particularly for her snarky verbal jabs at Sarah Palin and her children.

Like so many people, I only knew Griffin from television, where I found her more than a little annoying. About four years ago, however, I was in the audience at one of her live shows. And I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard, before or since.

On March 11, the Savannah Folk Music Society is bringing in renowned Appalachian fiddler Bruce Molsky for a show at First Presbyterian Church. Born in the Bronx, Molsky moved to Virginia in his teens and studying under the old–time masters. According to Mark O’Connor, Molsky has “a mystical awareness of how to bring out the new in something that is old.” Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. concert are $10 general public, $8 for SFMS members and $5 for children and students, at the door.

Unknown

I don’t mind that Unknown, which builds on Liam Neeson’s newly minted status as a tortured action hero, is utterly ridiculous.

Why? Because within the constraints of its absurdity, it always manages to play fair with the audience.

This is a radical departure from many contemporary thrillers in which the filmmakers are so focused on the twist ending that they barrel toward that destination with little rhyme or reason. The result is invariably a storyline riddled with plotholes and saddled with, let’s face it, a twist that was pretty easy to spot in the first place.

But Unknown isn’t like that. It starts with Dr. Martin Harris (Neeson) and his wife (January Jones) arriving in Berlin to attend a conference. A subsequent accident while riding in a taxi cab leaves him with a moderate case of amnesia, able to recall his identity but not the details surrounding the accident – and utterly unable to explain why his wife insists that another man (Aidan Quinn) is the real Martin Harris.

Alone in a foreign land, Martin tries to piece the mystery together with the help of the cab driver (Diane Kruger), whose illegal–immigrant status makes her reluctant to get involved, and an elderly private detective (German national treasure Bruno Ganz), who’s hoping to recapture a smidgen of the excitement he enjoyed during his time as a member of the Stasi.

Neeson is as compelling here as he was in his previous Euro–action yarn Taken, and the picture even makes some modest political jabs by presenting Kruger’s illegal immigrant as a heroine who’s smart, resourceful and tough, an asset to the population of any country. Mostly, though, the film keeps its focus on its central mystery, and when everything is finally explained, we can quietly smile at its outlandishcontinues on p. 34

Just Go With It

Adam Sandler’s latest catnip for knuckleheads, Just Go With It, is based on Cactus Flower, a farce that’s been the basis for a French play, a Broadway hit, and a motion picture starring Walter Matthau, Ingrid Bergman and Goldie Hawn in her Oscar–winning role. But here’s the thing: Not until I actually saw the words “Cactus” and “Flower” during the end credits did I even realize this was supposed to be another adaptation of that venerable comedy.

Upon reflection, it certainly contains similar ingredients to the 1969 film I caught on VHS years ago, but they’ve been buried under so much narrative rubble that my cluelessness was understandable. It’s a shame, because the base story – the usual formula about a man (in this case, Sandler’s plastic surgeon) who spends all his time chasing the wrong woman (Brooklyn Decker’s school teacher) before realizing that the Right One (Jennifer Aniston’s office assistant) was by his side all along – is workable, there are a few genuine chuckles (certainly more than in the atrocious Grown Ups, which contained, uh, maybe one).

And – shocker! – the child actors (Bailee Madison and Griffin Gluck) have more personality than the usual plastic moppets dragged out for these types of films.

But any potential is negated by bad casting choices – not Sports Illustrated swimsuit bombshell Decker, who fulfills the minimal demands of her role, but screen irritant Nick Swardson, a useless Dave Matthews and a slumming Nicole Kidman – and the typical Sandler–Dugan concessions to fratboy humor.

Whether it’s a kid pooping on

Oh no, Jason Statham, aka The Mechanic, is alone in bed! Whatever is a lady to do?

Swardson’s hand or Sandler describing his own poop as “black pickles,” these witless interludes destroy the film’s raison d’ tre: its romcom convictions. After all, it’s hard to snuggle with your sweetie in the auditorium when both hands are required to cover your nose and mouth.

THE EAGLE It’s a tricky business, casting the roles of Romans in period spectacles. It’s not that Americans are expecting actual Italians in these parts – on the contrary, with rare exception, we’ve long been conditioned to believe that Roman soldiers, emperors and the like sound best with British (or Australian) accents.

We accepted Russell Crowe in Gladiator and Malcolm McDowell in Caligula; we did not accept John Wayne as the Centurion overseeing Christ’s crucifixion in The Greatest Story Ever Told (you haven’t lived until you hear The Duke drawl, “Truly, this man was the son of God”). So here we have the capable character actor Denis O’Hare

(Michael Clayton, Milk, etc.), yet when he speaks as Roman officer Lutorius in The Eagle, his flat Yankee drone is enough to make the ears bleed.

Similar instances of awkwardness can be found throughout this adaptation of Rosemary Sutcliff ’s novel The Eagle of the Ninth, which casts dull Channing Tatum as Marcus Aquila, an honorably discharged Roman officer who marches into enemy territory (specifically, the nether regions of Britain) to retrieve the titular golden emblem with only a surly slave (Billy Elliot’s Jamie Bell) by his side. The Eagle is a handsome production, but Jeremy Brock’s ornate script flags at key junctures, and director Kevin Macdonald never convinces us that this is anything more than actors playing dress–up.

For a comparable lack of verisimilitude, I’d rather just stay home and pop Mel Brooks’ History of the World: Part I into the DVD player – a line like “The eagle is not a piece of metal. The eagle is Rome” doesn’t stand a chance against the likes of “Don’t get saucy with me, Bernaise!”

In the annals of “tough guy” cinema, there’s not much to say about the 1972 Charles Bronson vehicle The Mechanic except that its leading character displays a refreshing lack of sentimentality (not unusual in the days of vintage squinters like Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan and Bronson) and its script manages to end on a neat little “gotcha.”

This sleek new model, also called The Mechanic, retains that twist ending but jettisons the steely sensibilities, resulting in yet one more formula flick about a taciturn killer who, despite his penchant for slaying and maiming, actually turns out to be the kind of nice guy you might

I’d be dead. You’d be dead. Almost everyone we’ve ever known would be dead. But not Aron Ralston. When this young man found himself trapped, as the saying goes (and as Ralston named his own memoir), between a rock and a hard place, he did the unthinkable.

After five days of slowly withering away while his right arm remained lodged between a boulder and a rocky wall in a Utah canyon, he used a small, dull knife to cut off the arm so that he might continue to live.

127 Hours, based on Ralston’s book, is writer-director Danny Boyle’s mesmerizing account of those fateful five days in the outdoor enthusiast’s life. But while a stirring parable about

the indomitability of the human spirit, this story doesn’t quite lend itself to a cinematic rendition - it just sounds too simple, too constricted. But Boyle and co-scripter Simon Beaufoy (the team behind Slumdog Millionaire) expand the picture in all sorts of marvelous ways.

Visually, the film is always hopping with the same energy as its protagonist (played in a career-best performance by James Franco), relying on split-screen techniques and other lively tricks of the trade. And thematically, the picture doesn’t settle for the expected “man vs. nature” route, instead realizing that it isn’t nature that’s at fault but one man’s own near-fatal folly.

Jason Statham fills the Bronson role: As Arthur Bishop, he’s the best hitman around, although he’s not thrilled when his next assignment turns out to be his mentor (Donald Sutherland). Preferring to work alone, he later decides to take on the old man’s unruly son (Ben Foster) as his own protege, teaching him everything he knows about the art of the kill.

The 2011 Mechanic largely follows the plotline of its predecessor, meaning that it’s nothing special. Yet it goes the extra kilometer to prove its inferiority to that passable time–killer by cowardly softening its protagonist (the oldest movie profession might be the hooker with a heart of gold, but the second oldest is the killer with a mind of conscience) and even copping out at the end.

Yes, the “gotcha” may still be there, but other details have been altered, meaning that audience members have been snookered in more ways than one.

NO STRINGS ATTACHED Last fall’s underrated Love & Other Drugs was a movie of two parts, with the pieces as segregated as oil and vinegar floating in the same dipping dish. The frank and realistic relationship between the characters played by Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal was given its own space to breathe and grow, and the more sophomoric aspects of the film (for example, the scenes involving Gyllenhaal’s boorish brother) could easily be trimmed from the mind like so much steak fat. But such a delicate operation isn’t possible with No Strings Attached, which spends its entire running time slathering its fine points with so many idiotic additives that the whole enterprise ends up spoiled.

The script by Elizabeth Meriwether starts with a good idea for a thought–provoking movie for adults: An emotionally blocked woman, Emma (Natalie Portman), and a perpetually peppy nice guy, Adam (Ashton Kutcher), find themselves attracted to each other, but because she’s afraid of continues on p. 36

commitment, they agree to function only as “f@#$ buddies,” satisfying each other’s carnal urges whenever the need arises. No Strings Attached could have been fascinating had it made an honest attempt at exploring whether such a union could really work – think of it as a Last Tango in Paris for the Internet generation, with cell phones instead of butter as the story’s chief accessory.

But instead of Brando and Bertolucci, we have Kutcher and Ivan Reitman (who stopped mattering as a director after his partnership with Bill Murray in the 1980s), and the result is the usual rom–com ditherings, with the familiar assortment of stock supporting characters (annoying clod, check; cool black guy, check; sassy female roommates, check; lovable gay dude, check; and on and on) and one morally sound, preordained ending that again demonstrates the motto of hedonistic Hollywood is, “Do as I film, not as I do.”

At least Portman’s natural thespian talent keeps her character watchable; that’s more than can be said about the limited Kutcher, though his presence certainly doesn’t undermine a movie as

trivial as this one.

The King’s Speech The King’s Speech is anything but a stiff–upper–lip drama as constrained as a corseted queen. It is, however, perfect film fodder for discerning audiences starved for literate entertainment.

Director Tom Hooper and particularly screenwriter David Seidler manage to build a towering film from a historical footnote: the debilitating stammer that haunted Albert Frederick Arthur George (aka the Duke of York and then King George VI) since childhood and the efforts of speech therapist Lionel Logue to cure him of his affliction. The film is careful to paint in the historical details surrounding this character crisis – the support of George’s wife Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), the abdication of his brother Edward (Guy Pearce), the buildup toward World War II (Timothy Spall as Winston Churchill; love it!), etc. – but its best scenes are the ones centering solely on the unorthodox teacher and his quick–tempered student.

Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush are accomplished actors on their own, but squaring off as, respectively, George VI and Lionel Logue elevates their game.

It’s no wonder that they deliver the two best male performances of the year.

Examining the process of suffering for one’s art in a strikingly unique manner, this psychosexual thriller is by turns frightening, sensual, humorous and tragic. It’s a galvanizing picture that’s simultaneously elegant and coarse.

Black Swan

THE FIGHTER

Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan is a messy masterpiece. It’s one of those films that will force viewers to either reject it outright or allow it, however reluctantly, to burrow into the brain and remain there for days, weeks, months on end. It’s a character study writ large, a juicy melodrama operating at a fever pitch. And at its center is Natalie Portman in an astonishing performance.

Portman’s cast as Nina Sayers, a ballerina whose methods involve clockwork precision but leave little room for true passion. Nevertheless, her director (Vincent Cassel) decides to take a chance by casting her in the lead role of his production of Swan Lake.

But in true All About Eve fashion, just as she replaced an aging star (a knockout bit by Winona Ryder), she fears being usurped by a sexy troupe newcomer (Mila Kunis).

Meanwhile, the home situation is equally strained, given the fanatical devotion of her mother (an excellent Barbara Hershey, in a twist on Piper Laurie’s mad mom from Carrie). Is Nina strong enough to withstand myriad challenges, or is she on the verge of cracking up? The answers are all there, but the film is complex enough to leave wiggle room for any theories.

True to form for controversial director David O. Russell (Three Kings), The Fighter takes a real–life story and turns it into a scrappy, hard–edged motion picture. Its focus is the relationship between Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg), a boxer with real potential, and his brother–trainer Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale), a boxing has–been and crack addict holding his sibling back. Micky’s manager–mom (Melissa Leo) isn’t much better in looking out for her pugilist son’s welfare, leaving it to his new girlfriend (Amy Adams) to properly guide him.

The Fighter is initially so raw in its approach that it’s a shame when it becomes less Raging Bull and more Rocky IV just in time for a conventional fadeout.

Still, all four actors (plus Jack McGee as Micky’s sympathetic father) work well in tandem, and Russell and his scripters make the shifting dynamics among the family members ring true. The Fighter doesn’t quite go the distance, but it’s good enough to last several rounds. CS
