wHat: Psychotronic Film Society presents a piece of Asian “giant rubber monster” cinema that’s only been shown a handful of times anywhere in the world outside of North Korea. Back in the ‘80s, the late North Korean ruler Kim Jong Il was such a fan of South Korean director Sang-ok Shin, that he literally had him and the two lead actors in this film kidnapped, brought across the armed border between their countries and forced to make this Godzilla-esque period action piece, actually a thinly disguised piece of over-the-top political propaganda. It’s a real stretch, I know. It doesn’t even really make sense. But the other day when I saw the photos of that strangely forlorn final convoy of U.S. troops pulling out of Iraq, the first thing that popped into my head was the three wise men riding through the desert on the way to Bethlehem, following that star. I was probably suffering from a surplus of Christmas cheer. But the two images do have a certain similarity, and perhaps not just in terms of climate and geography. It’s fitting that the nearly nine–year war in Iraq would end just before Christmas — a “gift” of sorts to a weary nation, as well as a nod to the need for redemption in the war’s miserable wake. Fitting as well that it would end not as a chest–pounding “Mission Accomplished” display, but as an underreported whimper, a third tier story somewhere behind the
overhyped antics of Tim Tebow — a man whose simplistic, non-reflective brand of muscular Christianity would have been right at home in the run–up to the Iraq War itself (“they will greet us as liberators”). Looking back, it seems as if the Iraq misadventure was that bridge too far. Or to keep our desert analogy intact, the straw that broke the camel’s back. We were at a crossroads after 9/11. Would we respond to the threats against us with precision, strategy, and realism? Or would we just reboot the open–ended, mission–creeping military commitments that characterized U.S. foreign policy in the latter half of the 20th Century? For the most part we took the latter course, and in so doing cost thousands of Americans their lives and limbs in pursuit

Has Iran war begun? By sHelDon ricHMan | fff.org
The U.S. government lost a spy drone over Iran. Is it part of an ongoing covert war? Either Iranian forces shot it down or it fell out of the sky. We may never know which, but now the Obama administration wants it back. Iran says no. This is not analogous to kids who accidentally throw a baseball into a neighbor’s yard and ask for it back. The U.S. has been making war sounds in Iran’s direction for years, and these belligerent noises have grown louder. While there are grounds for believing the U.S. military does not want to attack Iran, which is far larger and more populous
than Iraq and would require a long, bloody involvement throughout the region, President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton insist that “all options are on the table.” For years the U.S. has menaced Iran with a military presence in the region. Indeed, Iran is virtually surrounded by American military bases. The invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq put thousands of troops just across Iran’s east and west borders. Other U.S. allies in the region include Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Israel. Admittedly, the Bush administration’s overthrow of Iran’s nemesis, Saddam Hussein,
of questionable goals. We helped along the nation’s economic collapse by cutting taxes in the middle of a very costly war — possibly the first time in history that any country has done that, with predictable results. Plenty of us predicted the results of the Iraq War even before it began, but that and two bucks will get us a cup of coffee at the nearest Starbucks. We were called un– American, unpatriotic, possibly even pro– terrorist. For the most part the same names are still used to attack the same people. The Iraq War ends just in time for an election year to begin. A war with Iraq’s neighbor seems in the offing. It remains to be seen if we as a nation — and as individuals — will learn anything at all from the eight years, trillions of dollars, and thousands of lives spent in Iraq. So this is Christmas. And what have you done? CS
introduced an incoherent note in an otherwise consistent anti–Iran policy. The now Shiite–ruled Iraq is closer to Iran’s regime than Saddam’s Sunni regime was. Moreover, U.S. troops are leaving Iraq, as called for by the agreement negotiated between the Iraqi regime and the Bush administration. But the troops are not going far. As the Defense Dept. puts it, the forces are simply being “repostured,” that is, moved elsewhere in the region, including Kuwait. Iran has surely noticed. The U.S. government wants the American people to believe that there are sound reasons for this belligerence, namely, that it is defensive and preemptive. Nonsense. As many have pointed out, U.S. intelligence agencies say Iran dropped its nuclear–weapons program over eight years ago, and the International
Atomic Energy Agency certifies that Iran has complied with obligations under the Nuclear Non– Proliferation Treaty. Every speck of Iran’s uranium is accounted for by the IAEA – none has been diverted to weapons. Some argue that the covert war against Iran’s nuclear program is under way, but it began more than a year ago. Fox News called the downed drone the latest in a series of mysterious events, including explosions and assassinations targeting Iran’s nuclear scientists and its ballistic missile program. A war with Iran would be catastrophic – for Iranians, Americans (government contractors excepted), and Israelis. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta believes that’s the case, as do former Israeli Mossad chiefs. President Obama must do the decent thing and take all forms of warfare off the table. CS
The wonder of it all management and bike to Kroger at 10 p.m. for diapers? So many good, hard–working people lost homes this year, had marriages fall apart, a child die. If you haven’t screwed up and been screwed over and aren’t just outright pissed off about it sometimes, maybe you just ain’t living. As the last adult in the world to see It’s a Wonderful Life, the biggest surprise is that it’s not so much a Christmas movie as it is about dreams deferred, even destroyed, and still retaining the capacity to receive the gifts right in front of us. Usually, those gifts come in the form of guardian angels here on earth. Lately mine are the neighbor who swept the entire block free of pine needles, the customer service rep who gave my complaint full attention, the moms who pick up my kids from school when I’m stuck on deadline. May none of us need to stare

Falls, full of good folks held financial hostage by a greedy opportunist. Sound familiar? All that banking and mortgage dialogue sounded so much like Headline News I thought my flatscreen had gone wonky. The people’s only small hope is the populist Bailey Building & Loan company started by George Bailey’s father, full of integrity but short on cunning. Then as now, with a few exceptions, the best people tend to make the worst capitalists. George Bailey wants nothing more than to shake off the dust of his “crummy little town” and see the world, but fate trumps him. I was already weepy halfway in, empathizing with his frustration as he continually chooses to shoulder the responsibilities of the life before him, instead of the glamour and adventure he imagined for himself. My own personal pity party threatened to erupt as I recalled my own plans after college. Like George,

THE FOLLOWING ADMISSION probably makes me a socialist by somebody’s standards: I just watched It’s a Wonderful Life for the first time. I don’t know how I managed to skate through 40 Decembers without being roped onto the sofa to watch the cinematic tribulations of poor George Bailey. I guess in its ubiquity I’d assumed I’d already seen it. Or maybe I dismissed it as an outdated tearjerker shown around the holidays by lazy t.v. producers. (It’s definitely not because Jimmy Stewart isn’t super-sexy. Perhaps you are not surprised that I was the only nerd in junior high to have a still from Rear Window in my locker.) Mostly it’s because if I’m going to do a Christmas movie, it’s gonna be something that makes me snort eggnog out of my nose, like Ralphie and his BB gun from A Christmas Story. Not some dusty piece of emotional manipulation that makes us otherwise–well–adjusted Jewish kids feel awkward. But circumstances converged recently that brought me in front our cable–less TV on a Saturday evening, and I was immediately hooked by the plucky banter and Jimmy Stewart’s adorable, gulpy voice. I was already schooled on the storyline by cultural osmosis: An angel, eager to earn his wings, is sent down to save some shmo from jumping off a bridge by showing him how awful the world would be without him. But you probably already know that’s only the last quarter of the story. What kind of blew my mind, apart from the ladies’ hairstyles, was how current Frank Capra’s 1946 classic seemed (der, that’s what makes it a classic, genius.) I had made the assumption that a little ol’ black and white talkie that came out before pantyhose was invented couldn’t possibly apply to life in the 21st century. Turns out I’m still an arrogant young whippersnapper. The film’s original Depression–era audience was reflected back on itself with the fictional town of Bedford

Who among us can say that life has gone as planned? Who hasn’t put aside the urges to “build great things” and go to faraway places in order to punch a clock for faceless management and bike to Kroger at 10 p.m. for diapers? I’ve always had a travel itch like a chronic case of chiggers. I figured by 40, I would have written several bestsellers and looped the globe at least a few dozen times, taking in operas in Vienna and dancing ‘til dawn in the clubs in Ibiza. I got different set of blessings in the form of marriage and kids, which I wouldn’t trade for all the frequent flyer points in the world. But I admit I could totally relate when George loses it over a kid plinka–plinking the same damn song on the piano over and over. It’s a tough pill to realize becoming the best person you can be might involve letting go of who you think you are. Who among us can say that life has gone as planned? Who hasn’t put aside the urges to “build great things” and go to faraway places in order to punch a clock for faceless
down an icy river to be reminded to count our blessings. As we “work and pay and live and die in a couple of decent rooms and a bath” and do our best to nurture the aspirations that give our days verve and meaning, let me paraphrase the words of Clarence, the second-class angel: No one is a failure who has friends. So you and me? Winning. Last week, I rushed from work to sit in a church hall for the school band concert and listen to a stage full of second graders with knit brows play “Jingle Bells” on slightly screechy violins. Vienna opera, it was not. An impossibly tiny old woman sat next to me, humming along. Just someone’s angelic grandma. “Aren’t they just lovely?” she murmured. Yes, ma’am. Wonderful, even. CS

popping good fun: lucas staffers lee alilima-rose and nayantara khanna
By Jessica leigH leBos | jll@connectsavannah.com
You’d think it wouldn’t be easy to make a ginormous popcorn box disappear. Eight feet high with red stripes louder than a pair of Christmas pajamas, the box stood outside the Lucas Theatre for a little over a week last month. Tourists posed for photos in front of it, locals enjoyed the festive addition. Then suddenly, it was gone. The colossal wooden container was designed and built by the Lucas staff to help promote the screening
of World’s Largest, a documentary about small-town America’s giant roadside attractions. The film dug deeper into these communities to see how large–scale objects help drive tourism to local economies, and Lucas Managing Director Meaghan Gerard thought Savannah could use a “world’s largest” of its own. “We would roll it out front during the day in the week before the
screening, and people really seemed to enjoy it,” said Walsh. “It generated publicity on Twitter and Facebook and put Savannah on the map.” It was all good buttery fun until someone with differing aesthetical opinions complained to the Metropolitan Planning Commission about “historic appropriateness.” The day after the screening, an MPC enforcement officer paid a visit to the Lucas to regretfully inform the staff that the popcorn box violated a sign zoning ordinance and would have to be removed immediately. “The anonymity of the process was the most frustrating,” lamented Walsh, who tried to work with the MPC to find a permit that would enable the box to stay. “It doesn’t seem right that an unnamed person can make a phone call and that’s it.” The unfairness of it all generated a new flurry of blog posts and tweets. Amy Elliot, the director of World’s Largest, who came to town for the screening, was especially disappointed to see what could have become an icon experience such a quick demise. “I can honestly say the popcorn box enhanced my time in Savannah. Its construction and presence transformed the screening of my film into a participatory event,” wrote Elliot on the blog of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. “If it still existed, I’d tell people to go visit it.” Elliot and others will be happy to know that for giant popcorn boxes at least, reincarnation is real. Rather than hack it into firewood or leave it to gather dust backstage, Walsh thought of a way to bestow life upon the popcorn box once again– albeit somewhere other than the historic Lucas Theatre for the Arts. She made a call to Dottie Kluttz of the Tybee Post Theater, who was delighted at the idea of adopting the prop. “It fits right into the quirkiness of Tybee,” said Kluttz. “We’re so grateful the Lucas would think to help support our struggling little theater and help give us a community presence.” As Tybee Island has no such ordinances against giant objects in public spaces, expect to see the resurrected popcorn box make appearances at the 2012 Polar Plunge and Tybee’s multifarious parades. CHATHAM POLICE DEPT. INCIDENT REPORTS
It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll A Savannah woman who used the Internet to scam runners in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon out of $8,300 has been charged with felony theft by taking.
Amanda Whitford, 41, of the 400 block of Price Street, was arrested after 18 individuals reported renting a house referred to as “The Pink Cottage” on her block for Nov. 4–6 and losing their deposit. The cottage had been advertised on a website. Police say she communicated with the visitors via cell phone, collecting $8,296 in deposits for the same dates. Two weeks before she advised them the cottage received water damage rendering it uninhabitable and offered to return the deposits, but never did. The money has not been recovered.
• Three suspects are in custody following a search of a residence that resulted in the seizure of an inactive methamphetamine lab. Members of the Chatham–Savannah Counter Narcotics Team (CNT) searched a residence in the 100 block of Bellingrath Court on the Southside. CNT began its investigation after receiving information that persons residing at the residence were involved in the illegal manufacturing of meth inside the residence. While conducting the search, agents discovered an inactive meth lab along with other evidence that indicated these meth cooks had occurred on previous occasions at this same residence. CNT arrested 49–year old Denny Maxwell of Savannah, 23–year–old Kaycie Rowell of Hazlehurst, Ga., and 31–year–old Jason Steverson, also of Hazlehurst. Maxwell was charged with Manufacturing of methamphetamine. Stevenson was charged with Manufacturing of methamphetamine and Possession of a Firearm by a
Convicted Felon. Rowell was charged with Unlawful Purchase/ Possession of Pseudoephedrine and Obstruction by Fleeing. • An 18–year–old Savannah man has been charged with burglary after breaking into his neighbor’s house. Roderick Parrish of the 800 block of Tavern Road was arrested at his own residence after his neighbor arrived home unexpectedly and saw two men burglarizing his house. One ran into the house next door and the other began jumping fences to escape. Police went next door and confronted Parrish, who was identified as one of the suspects. All of the items taken were recovered and returned to the victim.
• A 25–year–old Savannah man turned himself in after being contacted by police to face charges from the robbery of a dice game in which another man was shot Nov. 15. Jonathan Anthony Williams has been charged with aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He turned himself in to the Chatham County Detention Center. He is charged in the robbery on the 300 block of Lewis Drive in which a gunman walked into the dice game at an apartment, demanded all the money and then shot Jeffery Sams, then 18. Sams was transported to Memorial University Medical Center with nonlife threatening injuries. CS GIVE ANONyMOUS CRIME TIPS TO CRIMESTOPPERS AT 234-2020

news of tHe weirD Lead Story In some cultures, beauty and status are displayed via large holes in the earlobe from which to hang heavy ornaments or to insert jewels or tokens, and BBC News reported in November that an “increasing” number of counterculture Westerners are getting their lobes opened far beyond routine piercing, usually by gradually stretching but sometimes with a hole-punch tool for immediate results. The hard core are “gauge kings (or queens),” showing a “commitment” to the lifestyle by making holes up to 10 mm (three-eighths inch) wide. (Cosmetic surgeons told BBC News in November that they’re already preparing procedures for the inevitable wave of regretted decisions.)

The longest-running standoff now is probably that of John Joe Gray, 63, and his extended family in a 47-acre, well-fortified compound in Trinidad, Texas, southeast of Dallas. Updates • Unlicensed “surgeon”-castrator Edward Bodkin re-surfaced recently after more than a decade under the radar. (Thomas, born a female, had his breasts removed but retained reproductive organs.) Thomas got pregnant, appeared on Oprah, and had three children (who mugged for the cameras on the syndicated TV show The Doctors in October 2011). He also revealed on the show that it might be time to get his tubes tied, as each pregnancy requires him, to abandon his male hormone regimen. CS By cHuck sHepHerD uniVersal press synDicate

As I was decorating my Christmas tree this year I began to wonder if I was putting myself at risk from insects. I don’t like spiders much, and it would be even worse to have a Lyme-diseased tick bite me. Are Christmas trees fumigated, or are we bringing termites, etc, into our homes every holiday season ? —Doug
You’ll like this! Follow Connect Savannah on Facebook. (Not quite as addictive as Farmville, but you’ll win more stuff!)
Honestly, Doug, what a question! Don’t we have enough to stress about this time of year? Have some eggnog, sit back in your easy chair, and admire that tree. Now that you’re comfortable, here’s something that will answer all your questions. It’s from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It’s called Christmas Tree Pest Manual. It’s 179 pages long. Now, Doug, if you’re going to shriek, next time wait till you finish swallowing the eggnog. You know how the feds exaggerate. Let’s start with something more calming. Here’s an article from the 1905 Washington Post. The headline reads: LOADED WITH INSECTS Christmas Trees Abound with Invisible Bug Life. FORM PRETTY DECORATION Now there’s a positive mental attitude for you—they’re not vermin, they’re a pretty decoration! The headline continues: More Than Twenty-five Species, All Perfectly Harmless, Infest the Trees in Countless Millions and Add Material Beauty to the Ornamentation—Their Habits Discussed by an Expert. Doug, please, put down that kerosene. Listen to what the article says about scale insects, a type of plant lice. Though “exceedingly destructive and harmful,” these bugs have the advantage of looking like white dots. “Think of it,” the above-mentioned expert is quoted as saying, “of buying a Christmas tree already decorated, radiant with hundreds of little shining white specks resembling snowflakes. They should make an ideal Christmas tree.”
That 179-page USDA manual. True, it speaks in frank terms of the many insects, fungi, worms, and other horrors that can invade Christmas trees. There are aphids, spiders, spider mites, weevils, bark beetles, bagworms, budworms, and webworms, not to mention those scale insects. The gypsy moth and its cousins have plagued Christmas trees for more than a hundred years. The USDA manual is mainly meant for Christmas tree growers, not buyers. Most pests can be controlled on the farm. The solution may entail pesticides, fungicides, or removal by hand. Trees suffering from a particularly heavy invasion of certain moths, weevils, midges, fungi, or what have you may be chipped or burned. Post-harvest fumigation is sometimes required for imported trees, which can mean toxic chemicals and higher cost. Thankfully, drastic measures aren’t needed often. In a typical year perhaps one tree in 100,000 is bug-ridden. The critters are seldom harmful to humans. At any rate, nobody bothered to educate Skip Magic, staff member emeritus of the Straight Dope Message Board, and his wife, Auntie Em. One year they picked out the perfect Christmas tree, carted it home, set it up and decorated it, and went to bed dreaming happy holiday thoughts. The next morning they came downstairs to find their tree covered with hundreds of silver threads, which extended from the tree in the living room to the chandelier inthe dining room, and from there to a dining room window. From the threads hung tiny silver beads. Sounds pretty, doesn’t it? You know what’s coming next. The threads were silk, and the tiny silver beads were a brood of baby spiders that had hatched in the warmth of the house. Skip and Em suppressed the urge to put the premises to the torch and instead got out the vacuum cleaner, thereby salvaging the situation, although it’s fair to say if you were a baby spider your Christmas that year sucked. You can of course buy artificial and sidestep such issues, but you can never entirely put out of your mind the knowledge that the classic bristle-andwire fake tree was originally devised by a manufacturer of toilet bowl brushes. Thus the eternal dilemma. Or you can embrace biological reality with the knowledge that every so often you’re going to think: my God, this is gross. CS By cecil aDaMs

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1802 Abercorn St. Admission $20 adults, $10 children under 12 Indeed, this is a Christmas music show, but it doesn’t take place in a club. It’s in a church sanctuary. Don’t let that scare you off. The second annual Savannah Celtic Christmas is a freewheeling celebration of Irish music and culture, with dancing, good–natured tomfoolery and even beer and wine (the alcohol’s part of the cieli, or Irish after–party, in the Church Hall next door). The main attraction is Savannah native Moira Nelligan on fiddle and vocals, accompanied by her son Mickey on guitar, and “Uncle” George Norman on mandolin. Collectively, they’re called the Dixie Jigs. Nelligan and her husband, artist Michael Hickey, are paying for everything themselves, bring kit and caboodle down here from their home in Decatur. “It didn’t occur to us to say anything but why not,” Nelligan explains. “We love this stuff.” It’s a southeast spinoff of the “Atlanta Celtic Christmas,” a perennial favorite. Hickey, who’s also an actor, will demonstrate “mumming,” the traditional Irish mask folk dance. “I collect songs, I live to learn songs, arrange songs and tunes,” says Nelligan. “Oh my gosh, we live for this. And to share it, that’s very important to us.

Wormhole Bar, 2307 Bull St. Among Seinfeld’s catchphrases and contributions to the cultural lexicon, none stands taller than the Festivus pole. “Most of the time, when people do music, it’s about sharing, and we want to share what we love more than anything.” And then there’s stepdancer Jacquie Berger. “Jacquie Berger rocks,” Nelligan enthuses. “She is awesome. She’s in aviation school – she’s so busy doing all this cool stuff, I can’t get her to send me a picture. She’s by far the best–looking out of all of us.” Berger is also a dance teacher in the Atlanta area. “Two of her students just qualified for the world championships in Belfast,” adds Nelligan. “And those are the two that are coming with her to Savannah.”
us!” he proclaimed. (You’ll find it in the Season 8 episode The Strike). For George, of course, Festivus was typical family torture. First, Dad set up a bare aluminum pole in the center of the room. There followed the Airing of Grievances, in which you tell everyone the ways in which they’ve disappointed you this past year, and the Feats of Strength (generally some sort of wrestling match). Then came the Festivus meal. In The Strike, penny–pinching George fakes a charity, the Human Fund, and “donates” to it in lieu of giving anybody a Christmas gift. His clueless boss, Mr. Kruger, writes out a check for $20,000 to give to the Human Fund, which leads – in a typically roundabout way – to his getting invited to the Costanza home for a holiday meal. As Kramer says, “It’s another Festivus miracle!” There’ll also be a re–gifting ceremony at the Wormhole bash, so bring those bad gifts (“the worse the better,” advises Wormhole owner Amy Stafford. “I love Seinfeld,” she adds. “It’s my favorite show ever.” The Festivus fun also includes Elaine Benes dancing and an open musical jam. As Savannah jazz legend Teddy Adams prepares for the non–profit organization’s annual holiday concert and all–star jam, he’s making a list and checking it twice. At the very top is an infusion of hot blood for the CJA, which trombonist Adams, bass player Ben Tucker and others put together in the ‘80s. “A few years ago, about 10 years after we started the organization, Coastal Jazz was pretty solid,” says Adams, who also gives private trombone lessons. “We had a lot of sponsors, a lot of backings. The money is really the problem now. So we’re not doing very good.” Adams plays part–time with the Charleston Jazz Orchestra – in fact, he just returned from four days of shows in Russia with the South Carolina group — and he’s been carefully observing the inner workings of its support organiztion, Jazz Artists of Charleston. “I’d like to see Savannah culturally, and artistically, where Charleston is,” he explains. “People there are very, very supportive. They have venues for jazz, and all the musicians are working there. And I can’t say the same about the guys here.” Adams is quick to explain that the

City of Savannah keeps the CJA going year after year, despite the miserable economy. “I have no complaints with the city,” he stresses, “even though we’re getting about half the money we used to get.” The cornerstone of the CJA is the Savannah Jazz Orchestra, spotlighted every summer at the eight–day Savannah Jazz Festival. This year, because inclement weather kept a lot of people away from the outdoor concert, the festival lost money. Not much, but enough to feel the pinch. “The Jazz Artists of Charleston is the equivalent of the Coastal Jazz Association,” Adams says. “They’ve taken the Charleston Jazz Orchestra and they’re behind them all the way. “I’ve been kicking around some ideas, and I’ve been talking to the guys in the group. If we could just get a faction of support, a group from the CJA just dedicated to the Savannah Jazz Orchestra ... the CJA as a whole is so busy with the festival.” The key, he believes, is to hire a paid director. “Everything here is voluntary, and that does make a difference,” Adams says. “When you talk about a voluntary organization, you’re at the whim of the volunteers. And that’s not a good thing. In other places that I’ve seen, you get a director with some savvy, and some energy, to come in. And the director earns his or her salary.
The director generates his salary. And that concept works if you can find the right person.” One of the chief problems is visibility — while the association’s monthly shows at the Westin Harbor Resort are well–attended, the same jazz fans pretty much show up every time. “The patronage is a predominantly older, middle–class white audience,” says Adams. “The blacks come, but they’re older people. We don’t have any young people supporting the music. And with SCAD here, and two other universities, the people are here. We just don’t know how to get their interest.” A focused director — like the one at Jazz Artists of Charleston — could be the answer, he believes. Adams dismisses the notion that the nine–year–old Savannah Music Festival might have taken some of the luster off his organization. “We have never viewed the Savannah Music Festival as being a competitive problem,” he explains. “The Coastal Jazz Association was formed for preserving, applying and supporting jazz in Savannah and the lowcountry area. And from the very beginning, all of our endeavors have been free. Our festival is still eight days of free music. “Our thing is geared mainly towards Savannah and its citizens. We get a lot of tourists in because it’s free, but that’s not our focus. Savannah has

of them have either been invited, or know they’re welcome to play. “They know it’s going to be a good session on Christmas Day, so they’re gonna be there,” Adams enthuses. “Guys are lined up waiting to play.” And there’s a strong flicker of hope from the next generation. “Normally, the jam has been a vehicle, and good experience, for kids out of the Savannah Arts Skylite Band. “I get a lot of students from that band who are doing very well. Most of the students I’ve taught will be there for Christmas and wanting to play. “The kids we allow to sit in were precocious or have shown some kind of promise. And it’s been an inspiration to them.” CS Jazz yule love where: Westin Harbor Resort, 1 Resort Drive, Hutchinson Island when: At 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 25 tickets: $15 advance, $20 at the door information: coastal–jazz.org

a very, very strong jazz legacy. And we’re trying to perpetuate that.” Planned for Jan. 22 is a free concert featuring Adams, Tucker and several other musicians who started the CJA, originally known as the Telfair Jazz Society. It’s a reunion show, and it’s being billed as a “Rent Party.” The holiday show — Jazz Yule Love — has always been held on Christmas Day (in fact, it started at the old Flamingo Club, a jazz hotspot, in the 1950s. When he returned to his hometown in 1976, after a stint in the Air Force, Adams was instrumental in getting it cranked up again). The first half of the show will feature Adams’ hand–picked jazz combo, playing Christmas tunes and more. On vocals will be L.C. Quarterman, of the Darien area. “He’s a unique blues singer in that he has a voice similar to that of Nat ‘King’ Cole,” Adams says. “So L.C. has a very unique way of presenting the blues, and he also sings standards. He’s my favorite singer.” For the second part, Adams will lead a jam, with Tucker and a collection of the area’s top players. All

Wanna Kwanzaa? ‘Umoja’ means unity for all
By Jessica leigH leBos | jll@connectsavannah.com
No matter where one’s ancestors hail from, Savannahians get to be a wee bit Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. In the fall, all are welcome to grab a beer and don a dirndl for Oktoberfest. Fiesta Latina electrifies the whole city’s lambada, the Asian Festival gives us a taste of the Far East, and everyone has a Jewish mother at the Shalom Y’all Food Festival. Savannah’s Kwanzaa celebration is our chance to explore our African roots. Taking place every evening Dec. 26-Jan. 1 at the Tompkins Center, the local event follows the traditions originated by scholar Maulana Karenga in 1966 to connect black Americans with their African heritage. Each
evening, festivities include the lighting of the kinara, shared meals, song and dance and discussion centered on one of the Seven Principles, designated by Dr. Karenga to be the building blocks of a successful community. By community, Dr. Karenga meant post–Civil Rights–era African Americans, for whom the holiday provided
a point of empowerment and pride in tumultuous times. But rather than remain a closed ritual, Kwanzaa has evolved around the country and locally to become an opportunity for education and sharing for all citizens. “Anyone can embrace aspects of this tradition,” explained Savannah Kwanzaa Committee member Jamal Touré over deviled crab and sweet tea at the Garden of Eden, a locally– owned restaurant on MLK. “Black, white, Latino, Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Rastafarian–this is a positive celebration of culture and community.” Derived from a Swahili phrase for “first fruits of the harvest,” it invokes a practical connection between African tradition and urban life. Just as we enjoy aspects from other cultural holidays without necessarily possessing the same DNA as its originators, the joy of Kwanzaa is for anyone who cares about promoting and participating in an evolved and civil society, continues on p. 22

explained Touré. For instance, the third and fourth principles of ujima (ooh–gee–ma) and ujamaa (ooh–ja–ma), defined as “collective work and responsibility” and “cooperative economics,” can transform an economy when applied in the form of volunteer work and supporting local businesses. Committee chair Dorothy Cohen has watched many observances since she helped plan Savannah’s first public Kwanzaa celebration 27 years ago. A Brooklyn native who taught special education at Beach and Johnson high schools for three decades, Ms. Cohen has always encouraged all her students to attend. “I think people are curious but they’re not sure they’re invited,” said the beatific Cohen. “We are celebrating African–American culture, yes. But it’s a part of the larger culture, not something separate. We want to share it.” Savannah’s African–American history figures prominently in the local Kwanzaa program. Examples of the second principle, kujicahgulia (koo– gee–ka–jalia) or “self–determination,” include the non–violent protests of the 1960s and the success of Wage Earners Bank, once one of the richest black–owned banks in the U.S. in the 1930s, now the site of the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum. “We want people to know you don’t have to go outside this community to learn about greatness,” said Cohen. “It’s right here to tap into.” Touré, who also serves as artistic director for the Geechee Kunda Museum in Riceboro, reminds us that the Lowcountry is home to a unique and valuable piece of African–American history, the Gullah– Geechee communities along the
South Carolina and Georgia coasts. Their heritage is a stellar example of sustainability, self–sufficiency and cultural pride, though many Savannahians know little about its existence. Gullah–Geechee storytelling, song and dance are often incorporated into Savannah’s seven–day event. Perhaps for many white folks, attending the city’s public Kwanzaa may not be as simple as popping downtown for a green beer. But those who do will be rewarded with a richer perspective of the city, one that can help manifest the first principle of unity — umoja — that our civic leaders promise but can’t be accomplished without participation. “For the world to become a better place, we have to know about other people and cultures as well as our own,” said Cohen. “Every time we step out of our comfort zone, it plants a seed for a larger world view.” While there are other Kwanzaa celebrations that now take place in private homes and churches, the Tompkins Center continues as a public event open to anyone seeking more knowledge of African–American culture. Attendees are encouraged to bring their singing voices and a dish to share. “The most important thing we have to impart at Kwanzaa is information,” said Touré. “And information benefits us all.” “There’s also a lot of love,” added Cohen with one of her magnificent smiles. carne guisada con papas at the new puerto rico restaurant on Montgomery cross road
1/224–4017/8 A.M.–8 P.M.
A taste of Puerto Rico
Where the cooks eat on Christmas
Stews loom large in the typical Puerto Rican’s diet, and that works out great for me. I was in the mood for something rib–sticking and warming — carne guisada con papas (beef stew with potatoes) was sure to hit the spot. The setting was familiar. Puerto Rico Restaurant is housed in the former location of Golden Breakfast on Montgomery Cross Road. There has been some remodeling, which seemed to add more seats.
I was late for lunch hour, but several diners, including several military personnel, were just leaving. It was quiet now and wonderful smells coming from the tiny kitchen telegraphed the treat I was about to sample.

The dish is authentic Puerto Rican. The chunks of beef are stewed fork–tender with potatoes that have absorbed the rich and savory flavor of the stewing broth. I chose yellow rice with chick peas, which was nicely seasoned and filling. White rice and a side of beans is the other option. A small salad of crisp lettuce and tomato slices got a kick start from pickled jalapeno sauce my server dropped off.
Very few restaurants are open Christmas day. It is a time when the hard–working men and women of the foodservice industry gather with families or one another to cook their favorite dishes. It is a season of camaraderie, revelry and gratitude. I’m sure they will be raising a toast to you, their favorite customers — and we should raise one to them for a year of hard work and making our dining experiences the very best. Merry Christmas! CS

The dish reminds me of other ethnic dishes I’ve had — simple, unadorned and unpretentious. Here, the emphasis is on authenticity, not “Americanizing” a dish to attract the masses. With barely 20 seats the masses need not apply! I’ll be going back to sample the fried pork chop and fried chicken. A dish I’ve had as street food — albondigas en salsa criolla (meatballs in Creole sauce) — is on the menu and promises a bit more spice than the other menu items. The simple menu offers a few treats, including breakfast options, corn meals stick and a Cubano sandwich filled with ham, roasted pork, cheese, pickles and mustard. Bring your sweet tooth. Three flavors of flan — vanilla, coconut and cheese, await.

eloise (in front) and lord t. they’re headed back our way.
Lord T and Eloise
What’s not to love about Lord T and Eloise? The Memphis–based hip hop duo is loud, profane and corny, and they both wear heavy makeup and outrageous costumes. Robert Anthony (Maurice Eloise) and Elliott Ives (Lord Treadwell) are pioneers of crunk, the Dirty South rap derivation of heavy, distorted basslines and whip–smart, hypnotic wordplay. “The album,” Flagpole said of the duo’s 2007 debut, “comes out sounding a lot like the Beastie Boys on some very expensive drugs.” The guys were last in Savannah over the Fourth of July weekend, and they’ve booked a return gig – Thursday, Jan. 26 at Loco’s Grill & Pub. Lord and E have a third release out. The 23–track Rapocalypse, they say, “takes place in the future” and is “a magnum opus of their experiences with time travel, and harbors messages of what is in store for humanity.” Y’all can take that to the bank.
Civic Center
If it’s January, it must be circus time. Of course, January is just a week or so away, and the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus has indeed scheduled a stay in the Martin Luther King Arena. From Jan. 19 to 22, there’ll be eight shows under the (concrete) Big Top. And the latest Tyler Perry stage play, The Haves & the Have Nots, comes to the Johnny Mercer Theatre Feb. 21. The cast includes Palmer E. Williams, Jr., Patrice Lovely, Tony Hightower, Alexis
Jones and Maurice Lauchner. Tickets for both events are available now at etix.com.
To the South
We all know that Charleston lands bigger and better arena and theater shows than Savannah. Duh. But Jacksonville, a similar drive (in the other direction) occasionally gets the goods as well. For example: The Tedeschi Trucks Band has a gig at the Florida Theatre Dec. 28 (granted, Susan and Derek actually live in Jacksonville, so I guess it’s a no–brainer right after Christmas). The fabulous Lee Boys will open. Sevendust plays Freebird Live Dec. 30. And the apparently re–energized Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band will play the Veterans Memorial Arena Jan. 10.
And now, this
• Coming to Muse Arts Warehouse Jan. 13–15: Epic, a one–woman show written by and starring the fabulous Eve Butler, a former Savannah resident who you saw in such theatrical productions as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Les Liaisons Dangereuses. It is, says she, “ the story of three women, a couple of werewolves, a wizard, and some supernatural baddies. It is based on Beowulf, the epic of Gilgamesh, and the Odyssey.” • Colorado’s Mountainfilm on Tour – a collection of short films abourt the outdoors, wilderness and adventure – is coming back for a 3 p.m. screening Jan. 21 at the Trustees Theater. Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows
OO
If I wanted to see a movie featuring Indiana Jones, I would watch Raiders of the Lost Ark. If I wanted to see a movie featuring James Bond, I would watch Goldfinger. If I wanted to see a movie featuring Sherlock Holmes, I would watch – well, certainly not Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which might as well be a period Expendables prequel for all the reverence given to the legendary sleuth. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Baker Street brainiac remains one of literature’s greatest detectives, but because actions always count more than words in today’s Hollywood, 2009’s Sherlock Holmes reinvented the character as a kick–ass macho man, more Rambo than Miss Marple. Nevertheless, the freshness of Robert Downey Jr.’s exuberant portrayal as Holmes and the measured counterpoint provided by Jude Law as Dr. Watson managed to overpower Guy Ritchie’s hyperkinetic direction. Not this time. Ritchie’s showoff stylistics are often embarrassing to behold – this is particularly true in the action sequences, of which there are countless. As he battles his deadly nemesis Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) and his minions, Holmes most often applies his formidable smarts not to uncovering clues but to enhancing his advantage in hand–to–hand skirmishes. Some silly asides, such as Holmes’ camouflage coat, are best forgotten. But the steady bickering between Holmes and Watson has
yet to reach the straining point – thank the ingratiating actors for that – and it’s nice to see the clueless Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan) and femme fatale Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams) carried over from the first film. And while Rooney Mara adopts the Lisbeth Salander role for the Yank version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the original’s Lisbeth, Noomi Rapace, turns up here as a gypsy fortune teller. Her character’s services aren’t required to predict that Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows will emerge as an international blockbuster, with audiences flocking to see a dizzying swirl of furious fisticuffs, blazing gunfights, and theater–rocking explosions. Me, I’ll be home watching my Columbo box sets.

In an effort to prove she was more than just a pretty face, Charlize Theron was horribly made up for Monster and dowdily dressed down for North Country, consequently winning an Academy Award for the former and a nomination for the latter. In Young Adult, Theron has no need for such transformations: She looks weathered but beautiful, and it’s easy to believe that her character, Mavis Gary, was one of the most popular girls at her high school back in the day. Make no mistake: Mavis is ugly, but that unattractiveness emanates solely from the inside. And Theron, ever the trouper, is only too happy to bring it to the surface in this wicked, biting seriocomedy. The Juno team of writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman have reunited for another movie about an idiosyncratic individual, but Mavis Gary is the polar opposite of the sensible and intelligent character played by Ellen Page in that 2007 gem. An unkempt, hard–drinking ghostwriter for a popular “young adult” franchise now on its last legs, Mavis leaves her Minneapolis stomping ground and returns to the dinky Minnesota hometown she detests, with the sole purpose of landing the one that got away. That would be her high school boyfriend Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson), and what Mavis ignores in her quixotic quest is that Buddy is happily married to the sweet Beth (Elizabeth Reaser) and they’ve just welcomed a baby into the world. Dismissive of the wife and kid (“I’ve got baggage, too!”), Mavis continues her pursuit, despite the advice of former classmate Matt Freehauf (Patton Oswalt) to cease and desist. Theron is excellent in the central role: Never once does she angle for audience sympathy, and she matures even less as a person than Cameron Diaz’s boozy instructor in Bad Teacher. Yet the real ace here might be Oswalt, who’s terrific as a guy who’s

foreign hits prove to be better than expected yet don’t quite trump their highly regarded predecessors. Let Me In, Matt Reeves’ take on the Swedish vampire yarn Let the Right One In, is one example; The Departed, Martin Scorsese’s version of the Hong Kong import Infernal Affairs, is another (Oscar wins notwithstanding). But now there’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which manages the impressive feat of emerging as superior to the internationally admired Swedish version from 2009. In many ways, this adheres closely to what audiences witnessed in the first version (both films were based on the book by the late Stieg Larsson, the first installment in his Millennium trilogy). As before, two characters leading separate lives find their destinies intertwined: Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), a punkish, bisexual computer expert who’s suspicious of everyone around her, particularly men; and Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig), a wrongly ostracized journalist who accepts a personal assignment from wealthy industrialist Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) to investigate the decades–removed disappearance of his niece. Mikael searches for clues on the sizable Vanger estate out in the Swedish hinterlands, while Lisbeth, still in Stockholm, deals with a series of unfortunate developments, including an ailing friend, a broken laptop, and, most shockingly, a sleazy parole officer (Yorick van Wageningen) who binds and rapes her (her sweet revenge is brutal and brilliant). Only when Mikael realizes he needs an assistant does Lisbeth enter his life, becoming unlikely allies as they solve the mystery together. The 2009 Swedish version is a fine film, but this one is nevertheless an improvement, right from the dazzling opening credits (perhaps the best I’ve seen this year) to an epilogue that’s unexpectedly poignant. Director David Fincher works in a crisp, efficient manner, and while the original’s Noomi Rapace made for a memorable heroine, Mara is even better, retaining this great character’s steely resolve and unfiltered intelligence but confident enough to allow us to see the hurt child residing within. After helming the zeitgeist hit The Social Network, Fincher has been accused by some critics of slumming with this pulpy material, but I beg to differ. Just check out the climactic

endured genuine hardships in his life. Savagely beaten as a teenager by jocks who believed him to be gay (he isn’t), the physically damaged Matt becomes Mavis’ unlikely pal and sounding board. Like Mavis, he’s also trapped in the past and needs to grow up, but his good heart and sensible brain suggest that, of the pair, he’s the one who stands a better chance of belatedly snagging the senior superlative, Most Likely To Succeed.

Finally, here’s one seven–year itch that can be scratched. When 2004’s The Polar Express made film history as the first animated movie to be created wholly by employing the motion–capture process, we instantly recognized that we were in the presence of something ghastly. Awkward and unsightly, the ersatz innovation rendered all characters stiff, clammy and lifeless – anything but animated. Even as recent as two years ago, with the release of the Jim Carrey vehicle A Christmas Carol, it was clear that the format had not yet hit its stride, and it wasn’t unreasonable to speculate as to whether it ever would. But thanks to director Steven Spielberg, producer Peter Jackson and their crack team of technicians and artists, The Adventures of Tintin emerges as the first motion–capture movie to fully fulfill the promise of this hyped advent in animation. Based on the internationally beloved comic series created by
Belgian writer–illustrator Hergé (I myself enjoyed them as a lad, even though French writer René Goscinny’s Asterix was my main Euro–fix), this finds squeaky–clean boy reporter Tintin (voiced by Jamie Bell), accompanied by his clever canine companion Snowy, acquiring a model ship that in turn is being sought by the villainous Sakharine (Daniel Craig). Tintin’s curiosity eventually lands him on a real seafaring vessel that belongs to the drunken Captain Haddock (motion–capture superstar Andy Serkis, of Gollum and ape fame), and together, they set out to distant lands to locate hidden treasure. While the stop–motion process still isn’t as pleasing to the eye as either old–school Disney or new–school Pixar, its employment in The Adventures of Tintin still qualifies as leaps and bounds ahead of its use in the unwieldy antecedents in this field. What’s more, with the overseer of the Indiana Jones franchise at the controls, this cartoon cliffhanger manages to consistently serve up the breathless thrills. Even the 3–D, hardly ever worth the effort (or higher admission price), works for the greater good of the picture, at one with Spielberg’s kinetic and imaginatively designed set–pieces. Adults looking for a family film among the new holiday outings – specifically, adults who don’t want to be tortured by singing chipmunks (would that be all of them?) – have found their flick.

There’s a scene in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in which Tom Cruise’s agent extraordinaire Ethan Hunt must climb up the outside of a tall building with only the aid of a pair of electronic gloves that fasten themselves to any given surface. It isn’t enough that it’s a towering edifice – it has to be Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, merely the tallest building in the world. And it isn’t enough that a pair of gloves seem like scarce supplies for a climbing expedition – one of the blasted things must malfunction during the ascent, meaning a single hand is all that prevents Ethan from falling to his doom a hundred–plus stories below. And did I mention that, during the descent, he’s a few stories shy of reaching safety, meaning he has to swing around wildly like a pinata that’s been whacked a few times in the hopes of propelling himself into an open window? It’s utterly ridiculous – and also utterly exciting. The fourth M:I film based on the classic TV series – and the third to be worth a damn (only the second one was a letdown) – this wisely continues the tradition of assigning a different director to each chapter, going from Brian De Palma to John Woo to J.J. Abrams and now to Brad Bird. Bird, of course, is the animation mainstay behind Ratatouille, The Incredibles and The Iron Giant, and in making his live–action debut, he demonstrates that he’s not going to allow a real–world setting to hamper an imagination that had been instrumental in making toon tales. The plotline concocted by Josh
Appelbaum and Andr Nemec (both vets of Abrams’ TV show Alias) is so hoary that it might as well have come from a 1960s–era Bond flick: A Russian madman (Michael Nyqvist) plans to cleanse the earth via a nuclear war, and it’s up to the only active members of the Impossible Missions Force (Cruise, Paula Patton and Simon Pegg), plus a government analyst harboring a secret (Jeremy Renner), to take him down. At 135 minutes, the film admittedly overstays its welcome – the coda is particularly draggy, even if it does offer a pair of pleasing cameos – and Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is more inscrutable than ever. But for action buffs desperate for a hit to jump–start their hearts, here’s a Mission impossible to refuse.

Forget counting down from 10 as the ball drops in Times Square; here instead is a countdown of the 10 key points in New Year’s Eve, which proves to be even tougher to take than director Garry Marshall’s previous all–star holiday romp, Valentine’s Day. 10. A cocky messenger boy (Zac Efron) helps a depressed woman (Michelle Pfeiffer) fulfill her New Year’s resolutions. Although it squanders any intriguing potential for a May–December romance, this is the best episode primarily thanks to Pfeiffer, the only person in this entire film investing any genuine emotion into her character. 9. The person (Hilary Swank) tasked with making sure the Times Square ball drops properly calls upon a veteran technician (Hector Elizondo) to fix the orb when it breaks

Arthur Christmas won’t come close to matching the giddy heights of Aardman Animation’s Chicken Run or Wallace & Gromit films. Most of the major laughs come toward the beginning of this clever contraption in which the present Santa Claus (voiced by Jim Broadbent) might finally be ready to retire, set to pass along the reindeer reins to his technically savvy son Steve (Hugh Laurie). The doddering Santa doesn’t even consider his other son Arthur (James McAvoy) for the position, since the gangly youth is obviously too clumsy and awkward for such a responsibility. Yet when a wayward present means that a little girl won’t be receiving a gift this year, it’s Arthur, not his dad or sibling, who does everything in his power to insure that she receives the present.

Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret is a product steeped in cinema lore, drunk on the fumes of a bygone era yet canny enough to channel its nostalgia through modern innovations. Hugo is available in 3–D, and except for the annoying darkness that’s always inherent in live–action films presented in this manner, it makes glorious use of the gimmick, right from the very first shot when
falling snowflakes come right at us. Set in a Parisian train station in the 1930s, the story concerns itself with young Hugo (Asa Butterfield), a parentless child who tends to the building’s giant clock while constantly avoiding the grasp of an inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen) hellbent on sending him off to an orphanage. Connected to his late father by an automaton that needs repairing, Hugo steals the parts needed from an elderly man who runs a toy store in the station. Eventually caught by the ill–tempered gent, Hugo becomes drawn into his life, befriending his ward Isabelle, learning about his past as a film pioneer, and discovering the key – literally – that binds past and present together. But Scorsese hasn’t merely made an ode to cineasts; rather, his picture is a moving exploration of the manner in which individuals seek out love and companionship in an effort to form their own version of a nuclear family. Even with a friendly PG rating, it’s hard to imagine families trudging out en masse to check this out: The 125–minute running time, leisurely pace and lack of Muppets will probably cause many tots to grow fidgety before long, and even adults who desire their entertainment fast and furious will wonder if it’s too late to sneak into the adjacent auditorium that’s playing Immortals. But for the rest of us, we’ll always have Paris – and the enchanting movie set therein. CS

A caterer (the perpetually annoying Katherine Heigl) is angry at the boyfriend (Jon Bon Jovi) who ran away from her a year ago but has now reentered her life. Wouldn’t you run away from the perpetually annoying Katherine Heigl? (And why would anyone return for more punishment?) 3. Two pregnant women (Jessica Biel and Sarah Paulson) and their husbands (Seth Meyers and Til Schweiger) are eager to win the sizable cash prize given by a local hospital to the couple who produces the first baby of the new year. This is the most godawful of all the segments, and not just because someone yells out, “May the best vajayjay win!” 2. As the film closes with a final shot of Times Square, one billboard on the street ends up filling at least half the theater screen. It’s the poster for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Warner Bros.’ other year–end offering alongside New Year’s Eve. My mentioning this here is, to quote Sherlock Holmes himself, “of course a trifle, but there is nothing so important as trifles” – especially when one represents product placement at its most blatant. 1. The end–credit outtakes include a gag in which a doctor (Carla Gugino) reaches between the pregnant Biel’s legs and produces two DVDs for Marshall’s Valentine’s Day – a delivery that’s no more stillborn than the DOA New Year’s Eve.

down mere hours before midnight. Swank and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges (as a friendly cop) are as appealing as always, and Marshall regular Elizondo contributes a couple of chuckles, but this vignette is especially devoid of drama. 8. A man (Josh Duhamel) who has a one–year–anniversary date with one of the other characters – they met last New Year’s Eve – is afraid he won’t make the reunion since he’s stuck out in the boondocks (Larry Miller makes a welcome appearance as a tow truck driver). I won’t reveal the identity of Duhamel’s mystery date, but let’s just say I was disappointed it wasn’t Elizondo’s character – that at least would get a rise out of the Middle America mentalities that this sort of pandering nonsense targets. 7. A harried mother (Sarah Jessica Parker) won’t let her 15–year–old daughter (Abigail Breslin, now old enough to play a character who packs on the makeup) hang out in Times Square for fear that something horrible might happen to her. 6. A sympathetic nurse (slumming Oscar winner Halle Berry) tends to a dying man (slumming Oscar winner Robert De Niro) whose only wish is to see the ball drop. This one’s a real snoozer – teardrops won’t fall as quickly as eyelids will shut. 5. March 21–April 19 In the fictional world of the wizard Harry Potter, muggles are people who have no magical powers. Because of their deficiency, certain sights may be literally invisible to them, and certain places inaccessible. I’m going to boldly predict that you Aries people will lose at least some of your muggleness in the coming year. A part of your life where you’ve been inept or clueless will begin to wake up. In ways that may feel surprisingly easy, you’ll be able to fill a gap in your skill set or knowledge base.
taurus
April 20–May 20 On January 15, 1885, Wilson Bentley photographed his first snowflake. Over the course of the next 46 years, he captured 5,000 more images of what he called “tiny miracles of beauty.” He was the first person to say that no two snowflakes are alike. In 2012, Taurus, I suggest that you draw inspiration from his example. The coming months will be prime time for you to lay the foundations for a worthy project that will captivate your imagination for a long time — and perhaps even take you decades to complete.

May 21–June 20 In her memoir Blood, Bones & Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef, Gabrielle Hamilton suggests my horoscopes were helpful to her as she followed her dream to create her New york City restaurant, Prune. “I killed roaches, poisoned their nests, trapped rats, stuffed their little holes with steel wool and glass shards,” she wrote, “while my girlfriend . . . walked through the place ‘purifying’ it with a burning sage smudge stick and read me my Rob Brezsny horoscopes in support.” I would love to be of similar service to you in the coming months, Gemini, as you cleanse whatever needs to be cleansed in preparation for your next big breakthrough. Let the fumigation, purgation, and expiation begin!

June 21–July 22 In 1992, 30,000 Americans signed a petition asking the governor of Hawaii to change the name of Maui to “Gilligan’s Island.” Fortunately, the request was turned down, and so one of the most
sublime places on the planet is not now named after a silly TV sitcom. I’m urging you to avoid getting swept up in equally fruitless causes during the coming months, Cancerian. you will have a lot of energy to give to social causes and collective intentions in 2012, but it will be very important to choose worthy outlets that deserve your intelligent passion and that have half a chance of succeeding.

July 23–Aug. 22 The Palace of Versailles once served as home for French kings and their royal courts, and was the hub of the French government. To this day it remains a symbol of lavish wealth and high civilization. Set on 26 acres, it has 700 rooms, 67 staircases, 6,000 paintings, and 2,100 sculptures. The grounds feature 50 fountains and 21 miles of water conduits. And yet the word “Versailles” means “terrain where the weeds have been pulled.” Prior to it being built up into a luxurious center of power, it was a marsh in the wilderness. I nominate it to be your inspirational image for the coming year, Leo: a picture of the transformation you will begin.
Virgo
Aug. 23–Sept. 22 A guy named George Reiger is a certifiable Disney freak. He has covered his skin with 2,200 tattoos of the franchise’s cartoon characters. If you plan to get anything like that much thematic body decoration in 2012, Virgo, I recommend that you draw your inspiration from cultural sources with more substantial artistry and wisdom than Disney. For example, you could cover your torso with paintings by Matisse, your arms with poems by Neruda, and your legs with musical scores by Mozart. Why? In the coming months it will be important for you to surround yourself with the highest influences and associate yourself with the most inspiring symbols and identify yourself with the most ennobling creativity.

Sept. 23–Oct. 22 In the Classical Nahuatl language of the Aztecs, the word teocuitlatl literally meant “god poop.” It was used to refer to gold, which was regarded as a divine gift that brought mixed blessings. On the one hand, gold made human beings rich. On the other hand, it
could render them greedy, stingy, and paranoid. So it was potentially the source of both tremendous bounty and conflict. I suspect that in 2012, Libra, you will have to deal with the arrival of a special favor that carries a comparable paradox. you should be fine — harvesting the good part of the gift and not having to struggle mightily with the tough part — as long as you vow to use it with maximum integrity.
scorpio
Oct. 23–Nov. 21 What spell would you like to be under in 2012? Be careful how you answer that; it might be a trick question. Not because I have any interest in fooling you, of course, but rather because I want to prepare you for the trickiness that life may be expressing in your vicinity. So let me frame the issue in a different way. Do you really want to be under a spell — of any kind? Answer yes only if you’re positive that being under a spell will help you manifest your biggest dream. And please make sure that whoever or whatever is the source of the spell is in the service of love.
sagittarius Nov. 22–Dec. 21
The Environmental Working Group wrote the Meat Eater’s Guide to Climate Change and Health. It concluded that if every American avoided eating cheese and meat one day a week, emissions would be lowered as much as they would be by removing 7.6 million cars from the roads. This is the kind of incremental shift I urge you to specialize in during 2012, Sagittarius — whether it’s in your contribution to alleviating the environmental crisis or your approach to dealing with more personal problems. Commit yourself to making little changes that will add up to major improvements over the long haul.
capricorn Dec. 22–Jan. 19
Suzan–Lori Parks is a celebrated American playwright who has won both a Pulitzer Prize and a MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Grant. During the time between November 2002 and November 2003, she wrote a new short play every day — a total of 365 plays in 365 days. I think you could be almost as prolific as that in 2012, Capricorn. Whatever your specialty is, I believe you will be filled with originality about how to ex-
press it. you’re also likely to have the stamina and persistence and, yes, even the discipline necessary to pull it off.
aQuarius Jan. 20–Feb. 18
Pigeons are blessed with an extraordinary ability to find home, even if they’re hundreds of miles away. They have an internal compass that allows them to read the Earth’s magnetic field, and they also create a “map of smells” that gives them crucial clues as they navigate. A team of scientists performed some odd experiments that revealed a quirky aspect to the birds’ talent: If their right nostril is blocked, their innate skill doesn’t work nearly as well. (It’s OK if their left nostril is blocked, though.) What does this have to do with you? Well, Aquarius, you’ve been like a homing pigeon with its right nostril blocked, and it’s high time you unblocked it. In the coming months, you can’t afford to be confused about where home is, what your community consists of, or where you belong.
pisces
Feb. 19–March 20 One of Alexander the Great’s teachers was Aristotle, who was tutored by Plato, who himself learned from Socrates. In 2012, I’d love to see you draw vital information and fresh wisdom from a lineage as impressive as that, Pisces. In my astrological opinion, you need much more than a steady diet of factoids plucked from the Internet and TV. you simply must be hungry for more substantial food for thought than you get from random encounters with unreliable sources. It will be time for you to attend vigorously to the next phase of your life–long education.
