INTRODUCTIONS:

MEET THE

LEES By Marley Gibson

KEEPING THEIR FATHER’S LEGACY ALIVE forward since Dad passed away. It’s certainly been an experience, but I know he’d be proud of us for what we’ve done together as a family.” Standing just off Chippewa Square at the corner of McDonough and Drayton sits an institution of Savannah that has tended to locals and visitors alike for 35 years. McDonough’s Restaurant and Lounge was opened in 1987 by long-time Savannahian, the late Billy Lee who passed away in December, 2017.

“We’ve been here a long time…35 years this year,” said Joseph Lee, one of the managers. “The story goes that Dad [Billy Lee] opened up on St. Patrick’s Day in 1987. I was born in April 1987, so I have literally been here my whole life,” he said. Lee’s older siblings, Deborah and Mike, have each worked 20 plus years, and Joseph is happy to make his mark, as well. “We have all put a lot into the place and putting our best feet

Locals and visitors alike will attest to the authenticity of McDonough’s pub fare, drinks, and great music. The week of St. Patrick’s Day offers something for everyone. “We have our Tuesday night Creature Comforts trivia and then the bagpipers will play at 9 p.m.,” Lee said. “That will be the taking-off point for our traditional festivities. We’ll have Guinness happy hour Tuesday through Friday afternoons, Jameson specials, DJs every night, and starting at noon on Thursday. McDonough’s offers their traditional St. Patrick’s Day breakfast buffet from 7 – 10 a.m. for $15 per person. “We’re just happy to get back to what we do best and have folks fill the restaurant and bar.” Most know McDonough’s as one of the best karaoke spots in Savannah, it also offers families and friends opportunities to

“The success of McDonough’s is due to Billy Lee’s heart and spirit,” a server noted while moving busily about. As for winning the award, Lee is humbled. “This was the first time we’ve participated and it was a great experience. We loved it and it’s great news that we won,” Lee said between replacing TV remote batteries and triaging a computer issue. “Our marketing got it done for us. They’ve worked so hard. Our social media helped quite a bit, too,” he said. “We’ve streamlined a lot of what we have to offer, but most of all, we want everyone here for St. Patrick’s Day to know that Savannah is back in business.” Even though McDonough’s managed through two years of the COVID pandemic, they’re happy to see some “normalcy” return. “Through all of it, we remained open. And now, we’ve got this two-week venture with a lot of people in town and our goal is to take care of them and make them feel at home.” Lee said, “We’re honored to be part of this community—a fixture of downtown—and we appreciate the support of locals and visitors alike. We just want folks to come by, hang out, and enjoy the fun environment while we all enjoy being Irish for a day.”

CONNECT SAVANNAH | MARCH 16-22, 2022

Today, his children, Deborah and Joseph, continue the tradition, managing the restaurant and bar into one of Savannah’s favorite local spots. In fact, McDonough’s was just named the winner of the Connect Savannah “Bar Room Brawl,” voted the best spot to be on St. Patrick’s Day in the Hostess City.

Lee continued, “We also have a great team here. Great leadership and great organizing and planning going into St. Patrick’s Day, which, of course, is one of our busiest times of the year.”

connect and make memories for years to come.

ST PATRICK’S DAY

Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade | Behind the Scenes:

THE WIZARDS OF AHHHS BY MARLEY GIBSON

The observance of St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah first started in 1824 with the first documented invitation to the general public regarding the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah. Today, almost 300 units—including marching bands, families, military units, Irish societies, students, dancers, public servants, and commercial floats—weave their way through the streets of Historic Downtown Savannah. Of course, something of this magnitude doesn’t happen automatically. It takes hours and hours of planning, meetings, and organizing throughout the year by the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. Their year of work culminates in the election of the Grand Marshal to represent the city, the committee, and the Irish community leading into all of the events surrounding the parade. We bent the ear of Caleb Harkleroad, Parade Committee member, who has been greatly involved throughout the entire planning process.

TELL US ABOUT THE RING THAT HARKLEROAD DIAMONDS AND FINE JEWELRY MAKES FOR THE GRAND MARSHAL EVERY YEAR. There is a private reception for the marshals on the day of the election of the grand marshal which is always the last Sunday in February. We made the first one [ring] in 2019, but didn’t make one in 2021 because there was no Marshal. The one this year is the third one we’ve made.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO CREATE A RING FOR THE GRAND MARSHAL? Our business is local and we appreciate the support of the parade committee along with friends and classmates of my dad’s. So, we wanted to do something different and special for the grand marshals to really set them apart and honor them for their accomplishments.

Police Service for The Republic of Ireland. The Irish Prison Service will also be here. The Wexford and Limerick County Councils will both be sending some representatives. So, we’ll have a fair amount of folks from Ireland here in the parade. WHO IS COMING THE FARTHEST THAT YOU KNOW OF? A lot of bands were tough to get this year because there were so many school bands applying and they [the committee] had to deal with districts and COVID and regulations, etc. We’re not going to have as many bands as we normally have, but we have a lot of pipe bands coming. The US Border Patrol pipe band is coming, so that should be great.

TELL US WHAT YOUR ROLE IS ON THE PARADE COMMITTEE AND SOME OF THE THINGS YOU’VE HELPED ORGANIZE. I’m in charge of the bands this year. Navy Week this year is coinciding with St. Patrick’s Day, so we’ll have a large contingency of the Navy Band in town and in the parade. It’ll probably be a 30–40-piece band. Also, folks might not know that the Navy’s senior executive host is Rear Admiral Susan Bryer Joyner who is a native of Savannah and a graduate of Jenkins High School. She’ll be in the parade with the Jenkins marching band escorting her car during the parade.

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITIES/ CEREMONIES/TRADITIONS? I think my favorite event has become the Celtic Cross Ceremony which is a massive ceremony the Sunday before St. Patrick’s Day. It starts everything with Mass. Then, all the societies and families progress together, walking from the cathedral to the Celtic Cross monument at Emmet Park on Bay Street. Then, we have a speaker, a ceremony, and a reception. It’s very reminiscent of what the parade would have been like a long time ago when it first got started in 1824. As I said, it’s the Irish community’s day to be together, enjoy the events, and get ready for the coming week. It’s become a really special event for me.

ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL DIGNITARIES OR GUESTS THIS YEAR? We will be getting a visit from Helen McEntee, the Irish minister for justice. This is one of the larger visits we’ve had from an Irish politician. There’s a small parade on March 16 from Johnson Square to Madison Square and she’ll [Helen McEntee] be in that procession. The minister will probably make some remarks at the ceremony. There will also be a large contingent from An Garda Siochana, which is the National

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN SHARE ABOUT HOW THE PARADE COMMITTEE HAS WORKED TOGETHER? Our General Chairman, John Fogarty, has been hyper-focused on our goal and our mission which is to put on a celebration fitting to honor St. Patrick himself. The original event was a small parade consisting of 14-15 guys and they were Irish Protestants. A lot of people may not know how it has become an Irish Catholic Parade. - Alex Arango contributed to this article

ARE YOU GETTING EXCITED ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY AND THE PARADE? Well, you know, St. Patrick’s Day is so much more than just a parade. There are so many events that happen that are special to a lot of families. Just being able to be together and celebrate is just a huge, huge deal. Especially after all we’ve been through.

DO YOU MAKE THE RING IN-HOUSE? No, but we design it in-house. On the front and center of the ring, there’s a Celtic cross, which is kind of the focus of the day. The ring has three emeralds on either side and each corner. On one side, it says what number parade it is, so this year will be the 198th celebration.

The history of the Celtic Cross Ceremony BY MARLEY GIBSON

The St. Patrick’s Day festivities around Savannah officially kicked off with the greening of the fountain in Forsyth Park on March 11. This ritual occurs yearly in the beauty of the park surrounded by families, locals, and visitors alike participating in the long-standing tradition. Tara Reese, President of the Savannah Irish Festival Committee and a member of the Board of Directors for the Daughters of Ireland, said you never know who you’ll see at such an event. “I was at the greening [of the fountain] and I looked across and saw friends I haven’t seen since 2019,” Reese said. “These friends are from Dublin, Ireland, and with the Guard of Honor. I knew they were coming into town, but I didn’t think I’d see them until next week. It was heartwarming to see friends I’ve known – lord have mercy – for fifteen years, just standing there smiling at me. It’s so great to have them back in Savannah. It was like having a mini-reunion before the craziness starts later this week.” Reese also participates in the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) which sponsored a tournament on March 5. “We’re scheduled to go to Ireland on June 3rd for a tournament. We’ve got about 20 plus people on the team, but we’re always looking for new players with different skill levels.. She said it’s a great way to learn more about the Irish culture while meeting people, as well. One thing Reese looks forward to on St. Patrick’s Day is the special Celtic Cross Ceremony in Emmett Park. “After mass on Sunday, the Irish families and the Irish societies gather outside the Saint John’s Basilica and then we march together to the old fort,” she explained. “This is sort of considered the ‘real’ St. Patrick’s Day parade because it resembled the original 1824 procession from the cathedral to the monument in Emmett Park.” Once there, the Celtic Cross Ceremony honors the Irish heritage and ancestors with a wreath at the monument and a blessing for the parade from the bishop. “I think the Savannah Irish are very protective of their Irish history and the origins of the St. Patrick’s Day parade,” Reese shared. “The Hibernian Society, established in 1812, was formed by Presbyterian Merchants as a charity for Irish Catholics. In 1813, members of the Hibernian Society marched in procession to the Independent Presbyterian Church. The second was a private parade held in 1818 by a local military group known as the Fencibles. The first official St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held in 1824 when a notice from the Hibernian Society was published in the local paper, The Georgian, inviting the citizens of Savannah to join them for a discourse at the Roman Catholic Church on the Feast of St. Patrick the following day. The notice also called for the members of the Society to be punctual in their attendance at a 10 a.m. meeting, in order to conduct the business at hand, before moving in procession to the church. This is the first documented invitation to the general public regarding the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah,” she said, sharing research she did in conjunction with Georgia Southern. “There is just so much rich history here that so many people don’t even know about,” she said. “It’s that’s one of the wonderful things about this city... meeting similar people, sharing our history and experiences, and helping make this city even better.”

GET YOUR PARADE GRUB ON Continuing Savannah’s Irish-American food traditions BY MARLEY GIBSON

Around Savannah this St. Patrick’s Day, you’re sure to find green beer in any restaurant or bar. However, if you’re looking for some of the best Irish fare to add to the experience of the day, there are a few food traditions in town to get you fueled up for the day ahead. You can start your parade day off with a hearty breakfast from several restaurants on or near the parade route, but The Rail Pub, 405

West Congress Street, is hosting their 26th annual Kegs ‘n Eggs complimentary breakfast on Thursday at 8 a.m. “You just need to buy one drink and then we’ll give you a token to get a complimentary breakfast,” said a manager at The Rail Pub. “We’ll have free t-shirts for the first 80 customers, but get there early because everything goes really fast.” Another option for breakfast is just off Chippewa Square, McDonough’s plans to put it on big for St. Patrick’s Day. A party all day long, there will be a breakfast buffet, a DJ spinning all day, and buckets of beer. Several blocks south, Clary’s Café is carrying on its long-standing tradition of being one of Savannah’s institutions most any day, but especially on St. Patrick’s Day. Jan Wilson, originally came to Savannah some 30 years ago from Tennessee when her husband took a job with the Corps of Engineers.

ST PATRICK’S DAY week.” While of German heritage, Jan says she’s always Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. “Well, everyone is Irish, especially here in Savannah. I stopped drinking nine years ago and had a better time than I do now,” she kids. Clary’s closes off their parking lot for their employees and families to have a guaranteed place to take in the parade. “We rope things off the night before and it’s just a fun, family environment for everyone to watch the festivities together. It’s a family for us.” Like most all Savannahians, Wilson is overjoyed to see the parade back. “It’s going to be fantastic to have everyone back in town. We just love the parade and everything it represents. Sadly, a lot of our military have been called up to duty, so we don’t know if we’ll have the regular local military presence in the parade. We’re sad the Clydesdales won’t be here, but we know there will be lots and lots of fun stuff.” “We’re happy to have a feast and dress up in our beads and shirts and just have a great time. We’re going to be right here, doing what we always do, like we’ve done every other year,” she says proudly. “I’m blessed.”

She bought Clary’s Café 20 years ago and, as she sits at a corner table near the kitchen, watching the ballet of servers moving about, Wilson says, “I’ll probably die right here in this chair.” Clary’s is a Savannah institution, known in popular culture around town and to tourists alike thanks to being featured in the film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. “We’ve been around a while,” Wilson says. “But we’re consistent and good. We try for that.” And they’ll be trying extra hard on Thursday the 17th when they host guests in the restaurant again for St. Patrick’s Day. “We’ll be here at 6 a.m.,” she says. “With COVID, we were just doing to-go orders outside. This year, we’re planning on feeding—” Wilson pauses a moment. “How many people are coming to town. About 700,000. Well, I’m going to feed them all,” she says with a laugh. In addition to serving a lot of breakfast, featuring their green grits, Wilson says their corned beef hash is something that draws folks in. “People really love the corned beef hash. We make it right here from a family recipe that has never changed.” Wilson says their Rueben sandwiches are pretty popular, as well. “They’re perfect for after the parade. Anything else folks want, we have it. We’re planning on having a great time like we always do. The girls are already wearing their green shirts in anticipation of the

Local high schools marching bands ready to perform on St. Patrick’s Day BY ALEX ARANGO

The Islands and Herschel V. Jenkins High School Marching Bands will be performing during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Thurs, March 17 as it weaves its way through the squares of downtown Savannah. Melvin Lewis became band director for Jenkins High School in October 2019. Lewis, along with much of the band, have never performed in a St. Patrick’s Day Parade, but are excited for the opportunity. “It feels pretty good! My senior band students performed in the parade three years ago, but my 9th, 10th and 11th graders have never performed in this parade,” said Lewis. “I think there is some nervousness because the parade is very long, but there is a lot of excitement because they actually get a chance to perform.” Since 2010 Emily Graham has served as Islands High School’s band director. In 2013 Islands formed their marching band and have been in the parade ever since. “It’s a neat energy to play at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It’s the largest crowd of the year. We love playing in parades, but St. Patrick’s Day everyone is there for the festivities and they really get into the music. It’s fun to see people dancing along while we play,” said Graham. With this being the first parade in two years, Graham said that her students are pumped to be performing. “It’s been really tough not getting to play together. So I’m so thrilled that this year, we’ve been able to play all through football season and in The Veterans Day Parade. It’s been a couple of years since we’ve gotten to do St. Patrick’s Day, so it’s a big deal,” said Graham. For the students of Islands marching band, being able to perform in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is not only a chance to show crowds the fruits of their hard work, but also a way to come together as a community. “I wanted a sense of community coming into high school, and I felt that marching band was the best way for me to be around people who love doing what I love,” said Kamyrn Clark, a senior clarinet player and drum major for Islands High School Marching Band. Clark has been playing the clarinet for seven years, and performed in one St. Patrick’s Parade prior to its cancellation the past two years. This will be Clark’s last big performance with the band before she graduates high school. “I’m excited to end my high school band career in such a great way,” Clark exclaimed. Avie Ignacio is a sophomore at Islands and part of the band’s color guard. Ignacio joined the band back in May 2021 and started learning flag work that July. She said that she’s proud of her progress, pointing out that being in the color guard takes patience, skill and determination. “I’ve always known St. Patricks Day is a big day for Savannah, and for me to be a part of it is an amazing opportunity. It’s my favorite thing being in a place full of celebration,” said Ignacio.

ST PATRICK’S DAY

City’s First Navy Week Features Savannah Native, Jenkins High Graduate to be honored in St. Patrick’s Day Parade BY MARLEY GIBSON

The Hostess City is ready to roll out the red carpet for its first-ever Navy Week March 14-20, in conjunction with the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Festival. Savannah Navy Week brings sailors from across the U.S. Navy fleet to the area to emphasize the importance of this branch of the military to Savannah, the state of Georgia, and the entire nation. Participating Navy organizations include Navy Band Southeast, Underwater Construction Team 1, USS Constitution, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (METOC), United States Ceremonial Guard, Navy Operational Support Command (NOSC) Augusta, Naval Information Operations Command (NIOC) Georgia, Navy Recruiting Command, Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Jacksonville, Navy History and Heritage Command, the nuclear-power Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Georgia (SSGN 729), and the recently commissioned Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship USS Savannah (LCS 28). More than 75 Sailors will participate in education and community outreach events throughout the city, including the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade. All participating commands will follow DOD, CDC, state, and local guidelines for safety during the current pandemic. However, the most exciting news for the city is the Navy’s senior executive host is Rear Admiral Susan BryerJoyner, Navy Enterprise Networks and Cybersecurity Division Director. Rear Adm. BryerJoyner is a native of Savannah and a graduate of Hershel V. Jenkins High School. While in town for Savannah Navy Week, the Rear Adm. will participate in community engagements, meeting with students, and speaking with local businesses, civic, education, and government leaders.

“I am excited to represent the United States Navy while engaging with the city of Savannah,” said BryerJoyner. In fact, BryerJoyner will ride as an honored guest in the St. Patrick’s Day parade, preceded by an escort from the Jenkins High School band. “My experience growing up in Savannah instilled a sense of responsibility, confidence, and deep appreciation for the strength of diversity that has fueled my service to the Nation. I am honored to come home and talk about how the Navy shares the values I learned growing up and the drive to serve and succeed, which I learned as a student at Hershel V. Jenkins.” Navy Weeks are a series of outreach events coordinated by the Navy Office of Community Outreach designed to give Americans an opportunity to learn about the Navy, its personnel, and its importance to national security and prosperity. Since 2005, the Navy Week program has served as the Navy’s flagship outreach effort into areas of the country without a significant Navy presence, providing the public a firsthand look at why the Navy matters to cities like Savannah. “We are excited to bring Navy Week to Savannah,” said NAVCO’s director, Cmdr. John Fage. “Navy Weeks gives us the opportunity to help connect Americans to their Navy. We are looking forward to safely and responsibly building those connections in the Savannah area and showing everyone why their Navy is so important.” Throughout the week, sailors will participate in various community events across the area, including engaging with students across multiple high schools and volunteering for the city of Savannah, the Salvation Army, Frank Cullen Boys and Girls Club, America’s Second Harvest, and Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity. Residents will also enjoy free live music by Navy Band Southeast at venues throughout the week, as well as seeing them march in the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

prises, so it’s going to be pretty cool,” Gray said. “I’m so glad to be a part of this,” Gray said. “I think the biggest thing Mr. Kessler wanted to do when he dreamed up the Plant Riverside was to create Savannah’s premier entertainment district. The idea was to create new-age experiences. We’re not going to change into New York or Las Vegas. We’re not even changing Savannah, rather we’re helping to reinvent the wheel.” “This year, we’re bringing something to the city to offer the excitement we haven’t had in the last two years,” Gray added. “There’s great excitement at being a part of a tradition that is over 100 years while creating entertainment that’s something you’ve never seen before as we’re creating a new age experience that Savannah needs.” “The parade and celebration have last-

ed for 100 years and we’re happy to be a part of the movement toward the next 100 years.” Additional highlights include nightly Irish-inspired aerial performances by Cirque Divina and special fountain shows featuring the Savannah Children’s Choir’s recording of “Let There be Peace on Earth,” and music from “Riverdance.” Plant Riverside District will also host a children’s St. Patrick’s Cookie Decorating experience on March 18 at 5 p.m., March 19 at 2 p.m., and March 20 at 2 p.m. This event includes the opportunity for kids to decorate and take home freshbaked cookies as well as a chef’s hat and apron. The five-day event offers free live music on two riverfront stages, Irish dance performances, family-friendly activities, mini-golf, and photos with Lucky the Leprechaun, as well as festive food and drink options for all ages. Featured performers will include The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra, Eric Culberson Blues Band, American Idiot (Green Day tribute band), Draucker, Lyn Avenue, Swamptooth and Ramona, and the Riot. “We are so excited for this amazing celebration that offers family programming, live music, you name it… and did I mention, it’s free?” said Tyler Gray, Director of Entertainment and Programming at JW Marriott Plant Riverside.

“We’re going have a great time doing it.” Gray stated, “We have different stages that will be jam-packed with music from 11 a.m. until midnight. We’ll have family programming going on with the Kids’ Corner and fun activities.” Gray stressed how folks will want to be there for the opening activities. “You don’t want to miss the first day. We’re going to kick it off on Wednesday with Shamrock the Riverwalk where, with one flick of a button, we’re going to turn the entire Plant Riverside green.” The special “Shamrock the Riverwalk Lighting Ceremony” will be led by The Kessler Collection’s Chairman and CEO, Richard C. SHRIMP AND GRITS AT EMPORIUM KITCHEN

The big news this week is in Savannah’s Victorian District with the announcement from Cuban Window Cafe that they are closing their doors after 18 months.

Fortunately, there are far more openings than closings around town with everyone racing to get their doors open by midMarch in Savannah. You know, “green season.” In case you missed it in this space last week, we told you about the arrival of Alexander’s Bistro at Duffy and Bull downtown. Just South of Forsyth Park. Sandwiches, salads, fresh breads and pastries. ”Smol” is a brand new, small (get it?)

Gigi’s Cupcakes are about to open their 3rd location in the area. This one on Broughton Street. Meanwhile, Troupial is a Venezuelan Street Food coffee shop that enjoyed great popularity on Whitaker Street last year. The build out of their “Yellow House” is just about complete. They tell me they are looking at opening in the next week to 10 days at 9 West 43rd Street. The build-outs continue at Poe’s Tavern on MLK, Jr Blvd as well as Desposito’s in Thunderbolt. Rocky’s NY Deli in Sandfly has built a tiny “Italian Market” inside their current shop. (CONTINUED NEXT PAGE)

EAT IT AND LIKE IT (CONTINUED) Undoubtedly Savannah’s best option for authentic Italian goodies. Pastas, cheeses, condiments and more. Good eats you say? The Shrimp and Grits - made with a spicy tomato sauce, Andouille Sausage and jalapeños-at Emporium Kitchen are crazy good. These are different. Generally, if you have 10 bowls of Shrimp and Grits...7 of them taste the same and 4 of them are bland. If you like ‘em with a tiny kick, these are for you. I’m hearing very good things coming from Fleeting in the Thompson Hotel. A return visit is on my very short list. The same goes for The Garage at Victory North, 2605 Whitaker Street. If you want to get out of town for a day, Hilton Head Island is hosting their 25th Wingfest on Saturday from 11 until 5pm. Live music, bounce houses, beer trucks. Tickets $8 with 16 vendors selling wings all afternoon. Speaking of wings, how bad is it out there? I had a restaurant owner tell me the price of chicken wings are up roughly 40 percent from this time last year. “I had to take the 50 piece off of our menu because I was embarrassed to have to charge $83.50 for them.” they said. Still, families are rolling in and ordering them off of the menu. Got anything you want to share? We are always listening. tips@eatitandlikeit.com

Deep Center relaunched “Drop-In,”a free program for young people ages 13-19 in the community to provide fun, accessible, culturally-responsive, and trauma-informed workshops ranging from visual arts to performing arts and more. “Our aim is to build a space where our young people can find joy, mentoring, support, and opportunities to explore their creativity,” said Kathy Esparza, Director of Youth Programs. In her role Esparza supports the Work Readiness and Enrichment program, which is a partnership with courts, schools and Deep Center. Originally a spin-off of their Block by Block program in 2018, Drop-in was created to offer programming, especially for systems-involved youth. Systems-involved youth including young people in foster care, juvenile court, and alternative schools. “We work with system impacted young people to provide a wraparound service program where they have opportunities to do their schoolwork, as well as to engage in trauma-informed programming and more that focus on art, life skills, and professional development,” said Esparza. Drop-In provides a thoughtful, intentional, and easy entry into Deep spaces, without the immediate long-term commitment that other programs like the Young Author Project or Block by Block require. Drop-In is designed to addresses the trauma young people might have experienced in traditional learning spaces. “Drop-In is a really awesome program and a safe space. In addition to our community, we work with local artists from across the city to bring just one to two hour sessions of different programs, from performance arts to visual arts, cooking, advocacy, community organizing, hair-braiding, politics and more,” said Esparza. Drop-In will take place at three key

partner locations: The Front Porch, Gateway’s Club House, and the City of Savannah’s PARC Center. Session themes will offer a diverse array of opportunities including jewelry making, food, politics, dance, podcasting, and many more. “The dream is that eventually we can expand the program to a lot more community centers, perhaps some faith based on spaces in the different neighborhoods of our community as well as in the neighboring communities, because we know that is where we can reach a lot of young people,” said Esparza. Drop-In will offer workshops that help young people know their rights and ways as a community they come together and organize. Through this they want young people to know they have a voice and the importance of contributing their voice. “I think our spaces are political and should always be political. The arts have been at the forefront of all social movements and all political movements. We need to cultivate those spaces for our young people where that is part of what we encourage as a village for our young people. They have these spaces where they can continue to cultivate themselves and their powerful voices to be decision makers and in our communities,” said Esparza. The program aims is to build love and trust with young people, and direct them into other programs offered by Deep Center to ensure their long-term support by the Deep Center community. “I think this is really powerful. Drop-In programs open the opportunity for our young people to see themselves as the artists that can do that work out in our community. They can sell their art, they can be part of an art team in our community and so much more,” said Esparza. Drop-In relaunched on March 9, and the spring series will go through May. “Fresh, human, and personal”— this is how Allan Edmunds, founder of the Brandywine Workshop and Archives, has described the prints produced at the Philadelphia-based arts organization. A non-profit celebrating diversity, experimentation, and accessibility since 1972, Brandywine has become an internationally recognized printmaking center whose residencies have fostered the creative talents of notable artists, such as Sam Gilliam, Romare Bearden, and Faith Ringgold, among many others. ‘Contemporary Spotlight: New Acquisitions from the Brandywine Workshop’ is an opportunity to celebrate Telfair Museums’ recently acquired lithographs by Black artmakers, a decisive moment in the institution’s long history. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.. telfair.org Jepson Center for the Arts, 207 West York St.

The exhibition entitled the nature of not knowing starts as a way to explore new forms and ideas, a mapping of possibility. Cain’s lines are responsive and her processes move fluidly from one medium to the next. Cain’s indigo paintings fluidly move between bodily cut-out relief forms, silhouetted in soft purples, and oil paintings on yupo paper that recall an entanglement of threads. Her respect for indigo, its laborious ancient process connected to Gullah Geechee history in the region, stems from her years of loving attention to nearby Ossabaw Island. Inspired by deep waters and open skies, the unusual warmth of the blues Cain paints leads us to the textile roots of indigo and its Low Country history: “I like the fact that a pigment can be associated with a place, with this place.” PURPLE, PLEASE, 2021, OIL ON CANVAS, 60 X 60 IN

WHAT ARE WE READING? PRESENTED AND CURATED WEEKLY BY E. SHAVER, BOOKSELLER OLGA

BY BERNHARD SCHLINK Unfolding across decades—from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first century—and across continents—from Germany to Africa and the Arctic, from the Baltic Sea to the German south-west—Olga is an epic romance, and a wrenching tale of a woman’s devotion to a restless man in an age of constant change. Though Olga exists in the shadows of others, she pursues life to the fullest and her magnetic presence shines—revealing a woman complex, fascinating, and unforgettable. Told in three distinct parts, brilliantly shifting from different points of view and narrative formats, Bernhard Schlink’s magnificent novel is a rich, full portrait of a singular woman and her world. Translated from the German by Charlotte Collins

GALLANT

BY V.E. SCHWAB Olivia Prior has grown up in Merilance School for Girls, and all she has of her past is her mother’s journal— which seems to unravel into madness. Then, a letter invites Olivia to come home to Gallant. Yet when Olivia arrives, no one is expecting her. But Olivia is not about to leave the first place that feels like home; it doesn’t matter if her cousin Matthew is hostile, or if she sees half-formed ghouls haunting the hallways. New York Times–bestselling author V. E. Schwab crafts a vivid and lush novel that grapples with the demons that are often locked behind closed doors. An eerie, standalone saga about life, death, and the young woman beckoned by both. Readers of Neil Gaiman, Holly Black, Melissa Albert, and Garth Nix will quickly lose themselves in this novel with crossover appeal for all ages.

PAINT OUT SAVANNAH! By Beth Logan

CONNECT SAVANNAH | MARCH 16-22, 2022

ART COLUMNIST

28

Painting en plein air is the practice of painting landscapes or cityscapes out-ofdoors, in a loose, faster style than can be accomplished in the studio. Pronounced like the “plen” in “splendid”, plein airs are more impressionistic, vibrant, and immediate—capturing the sunlight and shadows at a particular moment in time. In the 1880’s, Monet, undoubtedly the most famous outdoor painter of all, began to carry several canvases at once and would paint the same subject at a different time of day, continuing to work on them on subsequent days, in succession, as the appropriate light appeared. Painters either love or hate plein air given the time constraints (usually two to three hours), it is necessarily more unforgiving, and the recognition of colors and how they compare to each other must be almost immediate. And, of course, the genre requires the cumbersome schlepping of easel, canvas, paints, and all other supplies to the outdoor locations of choice. Despite these challenges, or perhaps because of them, juried plein air painting competitions attracting hundreds of painters are hugely popular and are held all over the world. So, next week’s plein air event hosted by the Savannah Art Association is deserving of our attention and support. Paintings created will be available for sale during the post-event reception at the Green Meldrim House and the public is warmly invited. Newcomers to our city may not be aware that the non-profit Savannah Art Association (SAA) is the oldest in Georgia, operating continually since 1920 a point of pride reflected in their website’s URL: savart1920.com. Currently, members’ work is featured in the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport Gallery, at Pace Lighting on Chatham Parkway, and in the wonderful new Alexander’s Bistro (featuring the best chocolate chip cookie I’ve ever tasted) located at 1205 Bull Street, across from Local 11ten. There is also a show of members’ work in La Terra Natural Oils at 1520 Bull Street during March and April. Immediately before the pandemic closed the city in the spring of 2020, Telfair Museums recognized the contributions of the Savannah Art Association. Holly Koons, beloved past curator, returned to the Jepson to open the show “Launching Savannah’s Art Scene: Founders of the Savannah Art Club” in celebration of SAA’s 100th anniversary. She highlighted the founding members of the club, including local favorites such as Lila Cabaniss, Anna Hunter, Mary Comer Lane, Juliette Gordon Low, Christopher A. D. Murphy, Hattie Saussy, Margaret Gray Thomas, and others. For many, Koon’s was the last non-virtual art lecture we attended since COVID hit, and it seems more poignant and important than ever to offer our support as the Savannah Art Association revives their wonderful springtime plein air event, Paint Out Savannah! Open to painters in oils, acrylics, watercolors, or pastels, participants have the time between registration on Thursday to the judging on Saturday to paint up to two paintings within Savannah’s city limits.

There is also a Quick Draw competition to capture a scene in or near Madison Square within two hours. The full schedule is as follows: THUR., MARCH 24, 8-5PM:

Artists check in to receive their swag bag, information packets and to get their canvases or papers stamped at the Jepson Center for the Arts, 207 W. York Street. Marc Hanson will provide a painting demonstration in Telfair Square at 5:30 pm. FRI., MARCH 25, 8-5PM:

Registration continues at the Jepson. Artists interested in participating in the twohour Quick Draw will check in at the Green-Meldrim House, 14 W. Macon Street to have their paper or canvas stamped and create their work of art between 10am and noon. Judging is at 12:30 pm and paintings are available to the public for purchase at that time. SAT., MARCH 26:

Registration is available at 8am at the Green-Meldrim House for late arrivals. Finished work must be returned there before 3pm. At 4pm the Paint Out event concludes with a public reception and awards ceremony, raffle drawing, and sale. I met with the Paint Out Savannah! lead volunteer Martha Love who is excited to attract and welcome painters from other states to our city. As we know, in less than two square miles they can portray a river landing, bluff, cargo ships, historic stairways, cemeteries, colonial squares, and iconic landmarks such as Forsyth Fountain. And just a few miles from downtown, they can choose to focus on saltwater marshes, shrimp boats or palm trees. Love also tells me that anyone can visit the SAA’s website to purchase $10 raffle tickets for paintings, jewelry, tours and a two-might stay on Tybee Island. As noted above, Marc R. Hanson (b. 1955), a Master Signature Member of The Oil Painters of America (O.P.A.), will provide a painting demonstration on Thursday evening and serves as judge for the event. A resident of Tybee Island, Hanson is a very accomplished plein air painter who has shown nationally and internationally since the early 1980’s. He regularly hosts landscape painting workshops throughout the U.S. and says, “I love working with other painters in their pursuit to better their craft. My goal is not to have them assimilate my style and technique, but to teach them how to more closely examine the subject and apply the principles that representational painters must follow to become effective visual communicators.” Locally, you may view Hanson’s work at Salt Marsh Studio on Johnny Mercer Blvd. in Savannah where he shows with wife Dottie T. Leatherwood, also a superb plein air painter who is represented by the Mansion on Forsyth Park’s Grand Bohemian Gallery. If you are an artist, gather your paints and brushes and participate in this fun event that offers no location restrictions. There are prizes for Friday’s Quick Draw event, a $600 first prize for the Paint Out, the opportunity to fellowship with other painters from across the country, and to sell completed work after the Quick Draw and during the closing reception on Saturday. Nonartists are encouraged to purchase raffle tickets, watch the painters, and, of course, to attend the closing reception. What a wonderful event for the Chamber and City to promote and to recognize as we grow our art tourism, a piece of the pie they so often overlook. I, for one, would rather live in city where a vibrant local art scene is considered an essential part of its identity, and where tourists leave with a piece of original art rather than a tee-shirt or a to-go cup! The Paint Out Savannah! public reception, raffle drawing and sale is at 4 p.m. on Sat., March 26 at the Green-Meldrim House, 14 West Macon St. Registration forms, link to buy raffle tickets, and full details are available at savart1920.com

YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND PLAYS VICTORY NORTH By Alan Sculley

Photos by Alex Arango

CONNECT SAVANNAH | MARCH 16-22, 2022

When Nick Piccininni got the call in 2020 from Yonder Mountain String Band to sub in for some shows in place of mandolin player Jacob Jolliff, he wasn’t expecting it to be a big deal. “At the time, I didn’t think anything would necessarily come of it,” Piccininni recalled in an early January phone interview. “I guess, my main hope was that it might help my career in terms of just rubbing shoulders with the right people.” What it’s become is a chance to become a long-term member of Yonder Mountain String Band, one of the most popular acts on the “jamgrass” scene. At the end of 2020, Jolliff left the group and Piccininni accepted an invitation to join the band. Ironically, Piccininni didn’t know much about Yonder Mountain before subbing for Jolliff. But he was friends with Allie Kral, the group’s fiddle player, and that put him on the group’s radar when the need for a fill-in mandolin player came up. “I knew a few tunes and I had heard their name a lot,” said Piccininni. “I was running in a very like traditional bluegrass (circle). So really, even though both, you can say that Yonder is bluegrass and it’s just a different brand of it, but it’s just like two different worlds, really. You’ve got the jam world that they were in (and a separate traditional bluegrass scene). So I wasn’t really exposed to it a lot, just had the faintest idea of who they were, really.” The parting of ways with Jolliff marks the second major personnel change for Yonder Mountain String Band since 2014. That year, mandolin player Jeff Austin left after a decade and a half of being a central figure in the group that he co-founded with guitarist/singer Adam Aijala, banjo player Dave Johnston, and bassist Ben Kaufmann in 1998 in Nederland, Colorado. The remaining trio moved forward, bringing on Kral and Jolliff and making the 2015 album, “Black Sheep.” A second album with that lineup, “Love. Ain’t Love,” followed in 2017. But as the group continued on, it became apparent that Jolliff, a virtuoso on mandolin, wasn’t the right fit. “I think the main thing with Jake is he’s on a music trajectory that’s a lot different from where Yonder’s at,” said Aijala, who joined Piccininni for the interview. “He really is that good. I would imagine if you have that level of ability that playing with a band like us would probably be either boring or uninspiring

(although) he never said those words to me. “He’s an awesome dude,” Aijala said of Jolliff. “There was no ill will at all in that departure. I think it was a natural progression, an evolution, for both Yonder and for him.” In Piccininni, Yonder Mountain not only found a capable mandolin player, but a musician who also plays guitar, dobro and fiddle and is a strong vocalist. And Piccininni has already made his presence felt on “Get Yourself Outside,” the new Yonder Mountain album that will arrive on Feb. 25. Even though he was the “new guy,” Piccininni was very involved in the songwriting for “Get Yourself Outside.” That was the intention from the start of writing process. “I feel like we encouraged him to have as much (input) as he can,” Aijala said. “I think he’s a great singer and the songs are good. So why wouldn’t you encourage that?” For Piccininni, the biggest adjustment may have been learning to write as a collective. “It’s kind of weird to say this, but I’d never co-written any songs before then. So that was a new experience,” he said. “That comes with its own set of (challenges), kind of feeling a little timid, because you’re kind of baring your soul there…But I think that they made me feel comfortable about it.” Aijala said Yonder Mountain’s shows have undergone a slight change recently. The band has been famous for playing completely different song sets each night for a week or more on tours. But that is changing somewhat, partly because Aijala and his bandmates reassessed some songs that had been vehicles for jamming. Those songs now appear in sets in much shorter form, which means the band is playing certain songs more frequently. “We had a big reflection during the pandemic, and talking with Ben and Dave, talking about, just passing around solos doesn’t really make the song a jammer anymore, nor does it make it better,” Aijala said. “We used to do that with ‘Casualty,’ and we do it once in awhile where we’re passing around the solos. (There are) songs that I can think of that we need to maybe stop doing that, and there are other ones where we don’t do that at all anymore and they’re three- or four-minute songs now. I think that is also contributing to maybe having to play one song twice in a week or a couple of songs.” Yonder Mountain String Band plays Victory North on Wed., March 16. It was only seven years ago when country music singersongwriter and Georgia native Matt Rogers decided to leave his job in the medical profession to move to Nashville to pursue his lifelong passion of music. Now, he’s an award-winning singer-songwriter who has been recognized by NSAI/CMT, Music City Songstar, American Songwriter, Songwriting University, and Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. Like many musicians hailing from the South, Rogers says he discovered his love for music while attending church as a young boy. “Music has always been one of those things that’s been in my life as far back as I can remember,” he explained. “I kinda got my start like most country artists from the area do by singing in the church. In 4th or 5th grade, I started playing the guitar and by the time I was in middle school I had put my first little garage band together. I played in a garage band throughout high school and I actually attended college on a partial music scholarship.” With the combination of athletic, academic, and music scholarship money, Rogers went on to study medical imaging at St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, North Carolina. He says it was there that he met other creative individuals who helped him channel his songwriting abilities. “I started writing songs in college and meeting other creative people,” he said. “Being from a small town, there weren’t a whole lot of other artistically creative people. So, once I got to college it was something that I could nurture a little bit more but it still was not on my radar at that point that it was something that I could do for a living.” After graduating college, Rogers says he moved to Macon to work in medical imaging and did so for a number of years while continuing to perform on the weekends. “The last job that I had in Macon I worked for a group of Neurosurgeons as the Director of Imaging. At the time, I was writing songs and playing in a band that I had put together. We started playing acoustic shows around town and then we started spreading out further and further and eventually started going out of state.” “It was kinda tough hitting the road and being 10-12 hours away on the weekends and then coming back on Sunday and having to be in surgery on Monday morning at 6 o’clock in the morning. So, I dropped everything and moved to Nashville in the summer of 2015.” Although Rogers has been living in Nashville for the past seven years, he says he hasn’t forgotten his Georgia roots and is especially proud to represent his home state in the Music City. “Georgia is just one of those places…music is just born here and there are so many great players and artists that have come from this state,” he said. “So many of my musical heroes were once here…the Allman Brothers Band, the Marshall Tucker Band… Otis Redding. Georgia has its own sound. Regardless of genre, style of music, or how it’s being recorded, there’s just something there that intertwines it all and I’m proud to represent such a uniquely musical state.” This past January, Rogers released his newest single titled “Hurt Like You” from his upcoming album that’s set to release on Fri., March 18. “We’re super excited about the release of this album and we’re especially excited to be back out touring. The first weekend of our tour kicks off in Savannah and it’s really nice to know that we’re going to be able to turn loose and get after it this year!” Matt Rogers will hit the District Live stage on Sat., March 19 at 8 p.m. To purchase tickets or for more information visit ticketmaster.com and search for the artist.

PATRICK GARRITY + DEECE CASILLAS @ SOUTHBOUND BREWING CO.

BREAKFAST IS BACK!

Two headline-worthy veteran comics on one bill with a low ticket price is an offer you can’t refuse, unless you utterly detest fun. Garrity has been a road warrior, killing it for 20 years. Casillas has conquered Cascadia by winning “Northwest’s Best Comic” two years in a row. SAT MAR 19 | 7:30 PM

Sultry, sexy and very interactive, the nationally syndicated Red Velvet Burlesque runs shows in cities across the country. It’s not a stretch to assume the Savannah version has a little more bite than most. On St. Patrick’s Day weekend, will it matter? THUR MAR 17 | 8PM FRI-SUN MAR 18-20 | 6 PM

ST. PADDY’S METAL MAYHEM @ THE WORMHOLE

The clumpy, brownish-red remains of wayward posers could be knee-deep by the time this one’s over. Enjoy hours of aural punishment from Actus Reus (pictured), Out of Darkness, Rising Up Angry, Dead Reckoning, Bear Within Us, Septarian and Red Eye. Beer + metal = fun. FRI MAR 18 | 6 PM

You know the drill. You get to Tybee, you have Sea Wolf hot dog, then you do something cool. In this case, it’s a celebration of one of America’s greatest cultural achievements. Invented in Detroit in 1959, Motown literally changed the world with music that endures 60+ years later. Hear the best of it, played live like it should be. FRI MAR 18 | 8 PM

Macon’s big band hits that psychedelic-Dead-Allman Bros. groove sweet spot — hard — with audience-pleasing results. Reanimate your soul after the damage from St. Patrick’s Day and The Day After St. Patrick’s day, with an uplifting groove that’ll inspire proper Saturday night beer consumption. SAT MAR 19 | 10 PM

PURPLE MADNESS @ COACH’S CORNER

At 20, Warner Bros. gave Prince complete creative control of his first three albums. On his debut “For You,” he wrote, produced, arranged, composed, and “played all 27 instruments” except for some lyrics to one song. He eventually sold 100 million records. Purple Madness takes you on a tour of one of pop music’s all-time greats. SAT MAR 19 | 7 PM
