COMMUNITY

LIFE IN THE HOSTESS CITY

INTRODUCTIONS:

MEET ROGER MOSS A TRUE SAVANNAH VIRTUOSO

So what brought you to Savannah? My career brought me here. At the time, I was working in radio advertising back in Chattanooga and I was actually recruited to relocate to work for a competitor here and I haven’t looked back since. I remember calling a friend of mine

after I had just moved here saying that I felt like I was at summer camp. Savannah’s just a natural community and it’s stunningly beautiful. My career may have brought me here, but it was the combination of those two things that sold me to stay. You’ve co-founded quite a few organizations in the Savannah area, what made you want to pursue those ventures? Well, two of my biggest passions are music and education. As part of my continuous commitment to music and education, I wanted to put my two biggest passions together and also help the children in the community. What has been the most rewarding thing about working with children? Seeing them thrive! I’m no longer with the Savannah Children’s Choir but it’s a really great organization that I continue to support. They have an academic requirement and when I was with the choir, 99% of the kids that went through the program went to college. During my time there, I traveled with

the kids and saw them become absolute incredible performers. That was very rewarding for me! What made you want to become a singer? The American Songbook! Which is interesting because I moved to Savannah, the home of Johnny Mercer and the “God” of American Songbook. Do you have a personal mantra? I do. I always say “If I can do something I’d rather do something.” I’m a doer and a dreamer...I’m constantly dreaming of solutions to problems and following through with them. What’s your favorite thing about performing in Savannah? Well I love that there’s a very active audience for music here. The music scene has also really grown in the 20 years that I’ve been here and it’s been fascinating to see. I’ve been lucky enough to perform with both the Savannah Symphony Orchestra and the Beaufort and Hilton Head Symphony Orchestras

What’s your latest musical venture? About four years ago I partnered with piano player Kim Steiner, and we started a Cabaret set. We’ve been performing together since and I’ve also been able to bring in some of my friends from Broadway to perform with us. It’s been great. If you could only spend one night in Savannah, what would you do? There’s so many great restaurants here, so I can’t narrow it down to one. I think if I only had just one night...I’d like to have a nice dinner somewhere, listen to some great musi, and relax. What was the last song you had stuck in your head? “Moon River” by Johnny Mercer! If people could remember one thing about you, what would you want that to be? That I cared and that I did. Celebrate Roger’s birthday with The Great American Songbook, Broadway, Pop, Soul & Jazz, on Thurs., Oct. 7, 7 p.m. at Billy’s Place at McDonoughs, 20 E. Perry St., 2nd floor. $35

CONNECT SAVANNAH | OCTOBER 6-12, 2021

Tell us,who is Roger Moss? I’m originally from Chattanooga, but I’ve lived in Savannah for the past 20 years. After high school I moved to Chicago to pursue a bachelor degree in Interpersonal Communications at Wheaton College. I’ve held many titles: assistant human resources director, a radio and camera tech on Capitol Hill, an insurance underwriter, and a malpractice insurance underwriter...I also have over 20 years of experience in advertising, and I’m an actor and a singer. Since my time in Savannah, I’ve founded the Coastal Youth Choir in Bluffton, co-founded the Savannah Children’s Choir, and I’m currently the Chief Operations Officer for the Savannah Exploratory Charter Academy.

South Georgia State Fair takes shape at new fairgrounds on the southside of town By Marley Gibson

For 70 years, the Exchange Club of Savannah under the guidance of the Savannah Exchange Club Fair Association has hosted the Coastal Empire Fair. This year, however, with a brand new name, innovative entertainment, and a more convenient location, the South Georgia State Fair is meant to provide family fun in a safe environment. Chris Hafer, Director of Operations for the Exchange Club of Savannah, said the new fairgrounds are primed and ready. “The new South Georgia State Fair is going to be bigger and better than ever,” he said. “The Exchange Club of Savannah purchased 321 acres of land with 30 dedicated to the fair on Fort Argyle Road. We have all new rides—working with North American Midway—new technology, lots of LED lighting, and a $6 million investment to making this the best fair around.” Located at 105 Fort Argyle Road at Exit 94 on Interstate 95, Hafer believes the fair will have much more exposure than in previous years. “According to statistics, that particular exit sees about 76,000 cars per day. Being off a major artery and access from Highway 204 (Abercorn Street), we feel it will be a lot safer and accessible environment for everyone.” The South Georgia State Fair will offer rides for all ages with height restrictions for those more advanced “thrills.” “There are a lot more rides on the midway this year,” Hafer said. “We also have a whole host of entertainment, as well.” “We have a five-star petting zoo with exotic and farm animals. There will be a really fun show by the Soccer Collies—yes, dogs that play soccer. Oh, and don’t forget the Paul Bunyan log extravaganza,” he said. “That’s going to be crazy to see.” Locals will also be participating in several areas at the fair. “The Alee Temple Shriners will be working the parking lot for us,” Hafer said. “Parking is $5 per car with the proceeds being split equally between the Exchange Club and the Shriners.” And with the new grounds comes more convenient parking.

NEWS AND NOTES “We have extremely well-lit areas for the nearly 1,800 parking spaces. They’re nicely paved and we have 25 slots for handicapped accessibility.” “Additionally,” he continued. “The Chatham County 4-H will have a booth featuring several projects by members of the group. The Future Farmers of America (FFA) will also be showing a variety of animals for competition, prizes, and ribbons. There are pony rides for kids and local musicians are being lined up for the event, as well.” “But… do you know the number one reason people come to the fair?” Hafer asked with a pause. “It’s the food.” “People love to come to the fair for the food, so we have lined up 18 food vendors who will be offering fried candy bars, cotton candy, calzones, meats on sticks, fries, elephant ears… everything you expect to find on the midway.” Hafer said the best part of working this event is the smiles on people’s faces. “The fair is for the whole family to come and enjoy, but there’s nothing like seeing how kids react with laughter and smiles,” he said. “We are pleased to host our free Sunshine Special for over 600 area kids who are in care. There’s nothing like making a kid’s day.” The Exchange Club of Savannah, as well as the national organization, stresses child abuse prevention as their top priority and number one mission. They put time, money, and volunteer hours into many national, state, and local projects, “none bigger than this fair.” “It’s all part of the mission,” Hafer said. “We’ve worked hard to make this all-new and special. So, come on out, bring your friends and family, and enjoy a warm fall night with some food, fun, and festivities at the South Georgia Fair.” The South Georgia State Fair runs October 28 through November 7 – Monday through Friday 5:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., Saturday from Noon through 10:00 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 – 10:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for kids, with those five years and under getting in for free. NEWS AND NOTES

UGA creates stormwater management tools to help reduce flooding in coastal communities Fact sheets, checklists and a video created by faculty at the University of Georgia Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant are helping coastal communities invest in green infrastructure that protect areas from flooding and pollution from stormwater runoff. In the first year of their development, eight communities, or 44% of the municipalities in coastal Georgia that are regulated to protect water bodies, have used the tools created by Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant, a UGA public service and outreach unit. With funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Jessica Brown, stormwater specialist at the Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant office in Brunswick, partnered with Goodwyn Mills Cawood, an architecture and engineering firm, to produce a video highlighting the role of green infrastructure in coastal Georgia, factsheets on the most common green infrastructure practices, and inspection checklists to be used by professionals who maintain those practices. “There is a lack of visual guidance and local, coastal examples of green stormwater infrastructure,” Brown said. “These tools help bridge that gap.” Roads, buildings and parking lots that are impervious can lead to stormwater runoff and exacerbate flooding issues on the coast. When communities invest in green infrastructure, like installing permeable pavement or creating neighborhood rain gardens, they become more resilient. According to the 2017 Coastal Georgia Low Impact Development Inventory, there are 220 green infrastructure practices in Georgia’s 11 coastal counties that manage 89.3 million gallons of stormwater annually. More than 94% of those green infrastructure practices are in the eight municipalities that are using the tools.

“We’re having to really rethink how we’re planning for our communities for the long haul,” said Jackie Jackson, director of advance planning and special projects with the Chatham County-Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission. “In Chatham County we’re faced with planning for saltwater intrusion, we’re seeing things that are impacting our waterways and tree canopies, and we throw that on top of huge issues with localized flooding and more and more storms.”

“We’re kind of at that tipping point where we’ve got to start doing something different, and these are tools that we can use to start making some of those important changes.” Constructed bioswale at Marshall’s Run apartments in Garden City, Georgia. Since the work is often carried out by maintenance staff in public works departments, Brown, created the user-friendly tools with them in mind. Jackson helped Brown gather feedback from public works staff as the factsheets and checklists were being developed. She then worked with the cities of Bloomingdale and Garden City to incorporate the resources into their stormwater management plans, which led to the tools being approved by the state of Georgia for these coastal communities. “All inspection forms have to be approved by the state and the state agreed that these tools will work,” Jackson said. “The end product is something that the state of Georgia actually permits communities to implement, so it becomes a win-win for everybody.” The tools are free and available to anyone interested in learning about or implementing green infrastructure practices. FOOD & DRINK EAT IT & LIKE IT PRESENTED WEEKLY BY SAVANNAH TECHNICAL COLLEGE

FALL FOOD NEWS AND NOTES Emptying out the notebook waiting for Summer weather to finally get out of here EAT IT AND LIKE IT By Jesse Blanco eatitandlikeit.com The collaboration we told you about a couple of weeks ago between Big Bon Bodega and Pizza guru Jay Langfelder opens this week. Wednesday through Saturday nights only. I was invited to another trial run last weekend and I can tell you this pizza is not only delicious but going to be extremely popular. Put it on your short list. Leon’s is a sandwich shop on Drayton Street in downtown Savannah a few doors down from Pinkie Master’s. They’ve announced they are closing. Their last day will be October 9th. I’m really excited about what I’ve been told is going into that space afterward. If it actually comes to fruition, you will be too. Stay tuned. I visited with the guys at Sea Wolf on Tybee Island last week for a segment on our television show and got to try some of their brunch goods. Cajun Cheddar biscuit with poached eggs and maple glazed pork belly? Yes. It was absolutely fantastic. Their brunch service started 2 weeks ago. Saturday and Sunday only with live Bluegrass on Sunday mornings. Run, don’t walk. Also, The Fat Radish downtown is bringing back their Brunch on Sunday October 10th. Speaking of our TV show (Saturdays at noon on WTOC) we featured a few Latin eats around town last week. If you have not tried La Casita Peruvian restaurant in Richmond Hill you absolutely must. Iris Sarria runs the show with her two sons (who are chefs) turning out some wonderful food. The Lomo Saltado is a Cantonese influenced Peruvian Beef Tenderloin stir fry. So very good. Also worth mentioning is the Cuban revolution going on at Cuban Window Cafe at Duffy and Abercorn downtown Savannah. They’ve only been open about a year and are bursting at the seams with expansion. Their brand new wrapped food truck is parked out front already. They are planning on a presence on Savannah’s Southside. The best news I’ve heard from are plans to stay open nightly until 9pm. To this point they’ve been closing at 6pm which made any attempt at dinner difficult. Great news across the board.

Speaking of hotel restaurants, the highly anticipated return of Savannah favorite chef Lauren Teague is approaching at the 1540 Room in the DeSoto Hotel. I haven’t to chef since the Summer, but I believe she is going to do very well there. If you know her Savannah journey, she first made a name for herself here at the Andaz Hotel at Ellis Square. Look for an opening toward the end of the month. Of course, we will keep you posted. Of course, the best way to be ‘kept posted’ is by signing up for our Eat It and Like It newsletter. All the news that’s fit to eat around here: Every Thursday to your inbox. Do so at eatitandlikeit.com

Fleeting is the new restaurant now open at the Thompson Hotel at Savannah’s Eastern Wharf project. Chef Rob Newton is fascinated with Southern Cuisine, even wrote a cook book about it. I had an enjoyable dinner there a couple of weeks ago. Don’t let the fact that it is in a hotel cloud your judgement. They are doing a nice job there. Bar Julian on the roof there will be serving Brunch soon.

COCKTAIL OF THE WEEK

FISTFULL OF PESOS ENJOY AT:

THE COCKTAIL ROOM AT GHOST COAST DISTILLERY “It’s definitely fruity—because there’s blackberries— there’s maybe a mezcal type thing going on, because the whole cocktail is infused with smoke instead of just the agave spirit. The rim is a salt rim with Sichuan peppercorn, they’re not really spicy just tingly. The whole thing is a trip! It’s a drink that’s definitely appropriate for spooky season! You’ll want to sip more just to figure out what the flavors are. It’s my favorite cocktail on this new menu!” —Cory Reuter, Bar Manager The Cocktail is made with Ghost Coast’s signature Tommy Agave spirit, fresh lime juice, chipotle agave syrup, and blackberries. Then, the whole drink is smoked using Ghost Coast Bourbon barrel oak chips.

THE

FISTFULL OF PESOS

SIDE NOTE: Also on the new Fall menu at Ghost Coast: THE INSIDER TRADING Crafted with house-made apple cider, it’s served with Ghost Coast Peach Whiskey, but we hear it’s also delicious with their Tiki-Spiced Rum. It’s a taste of Fall in a lowball!

SCAD ANNOUNCES SCHEDULE AND STAR-STUDDED LINE UP FOR THE 24TH SCAD SAVANNAH FILM FESTIVAL

CONNECT SAVANNAH | OCTOBER 6-12, 2021

By Kareem McMichael

18

The largest university-run film festival in the U.S. is returning for its 24th year. The Savannah College of Art and Design will present the 24th annual SCAD Savannah Film Festival inperson and virtually October 23–30, 2021. The eight-day celebration honors both professional and student filmmakers and welcomes major industry giants, including award-winning directors, writers, and actors. “We are so excited to be back in person to celebrate the best in cinema at the 2021 SCAD Savannah Film Festival, and to continue our diverse programming, championing wonder women and artisan talent trailblazers in the industry,” said SCAD Savannah Film Festival Executive Director Christina Routhier. The festival is an exciting one to attend for filmmakers and film lovers. Broughton St., near the Lucas and Trustees Theaters is transformed into a fun entertainment center offering food, games, drinks and more while attendees wait to attend film screenings. Guests also can catch some of the biggest stars in Hollywood walk the red carpet, and snap photos right here in Savannah. Anticipation for the film festival passes this year was so high that film fans camped outside of the box office to be some of the first to get tickets. The festival kicks off Sat., Oct. 23, with the openingnight Gala Screening of “Belfast,” directed by Kenneth Branagh (a 2021 Honoree). The festival culminates Sat., Oct. 30, with the closing-night Gala Screening of “King Richard” with Aunjanue Ellis (also an Honoree this year).

Both films have been generating Oscar buzz after screenings at a couple of festivals so far. BELFAST is a 2021 British-Irish black-and-white coming of age comedy-drama film written and directed by Kenneth Branagh. It is a semi-autobiographical film which chronicles the life of a working-class family and their young son’s childhood during the tumult of the late 1960s in the Northern Ireland capital. KING RICHARD, a 2021 American biographical drama film directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green that follows the life of Richard Williams, the father and coach of famed tennis players Venus and Serena Williams stars Will Smith and Aunjanue Ellis, has been creating Oscar buzz already for Will Smith as a contender for best actor, a category he’s been nominated in twice—losing both times. The Centerpiece Gala Screening C’MON C’MON will feature on Wed., Oct. 27 with director and writer Mike Mills. “C’mon C’mon” is a 2021 American black-and-white drama film starring Joaquin Phoenix, about an artist (Phoenix) left to take care of his precocious young nephew as they forge an unexpected bond over a crosscountry trip. The SCAD Savannah Film Festival is a key stop on the Academy Awards festival circuit, and this year the festival will screen 157 films, including 45 narrative feature films, 15 documentary feature films and 97 shorts, with 14 world premieres, one U.S. premiere, and three North American premieres—with 63 of these films directed by women. The SCAD Savannah Film Festival has screened more than 120 Academy Award-nominated films and has honored more than 100 legendary actors, directors,

producers, writers, and filmmakers from around the world. “We meet filmmakers from around the world and ones that are deep in the industry. Seeing people doing the things we want to do is important as students because they are where we want to be. They also give us advice and tips on how to get industry jobs,” said frequent festival attendee Jewel Hamrick IV, a SCAD Film and Television graduate student and founder and CEO of IV Vision. The SCAD Savannah Film Festival is renowned for spotlighting major award contenders, screening a multitude of studio films prior to their wider release and 20 films were selected this year. The eighth annual “Docs to Watch” series will be accompanied by a roundtable with the directors, hosted by Scott Feinberg of “The Hollywood Reporter.” “Settle into your seats and marvel at the magic of stellar cinema at this year’s SCAD Savannah Film Festival,” said SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace. The 2021 schedule includes Gala and Signature Screenings, professional and student competition films, Docs to Watch, Shorts Spotlight, Global Shorts Forum, and the Wonder Women and Below the Line panel series. “With in-person events that prioritize safety, comfort, and community, SCAD’s signature festival dazzles with a display of more than 150 films and an assortment of stars from living legends like Kenneth Branagh to luminaries such as Aunjanue Ellis. There’s always more premieres, panels, and masterclasses. That’s SCAD. Home to the world’s largest and most lauded university film studio complex, home to

DAVENPORT HOUSE MUSEUM RESSURECTS LIVING HISTORY EVENT BASED ON YELLOW FEVER SCARE

20

Those looking to get into the spooky spirit this Fall may want to check out the Davenport House Museum for an eerie glimpse into Savannah’s past. For the month of October the Davenport House Museum will be hosting its “Living History: Yellow Fever in Savannah” program. Jamie Credle, director of the Davenport House Museum, said their goal is to give visitors a better understanding of what it was like to go through the Yellow Fever epidemic with a 50-minute dramatized recreation. “We have a cast of characters primarily consisting of community volunteers who are performing a scripted presentation using historical sources from 1820 that are related to Yellow Fever, loss, and despair,” Credle said. “We want people to understand the psychological effects the Yellow Fever epidemic caused the city’s residents, so our living history experience explores different ways that people were doctored back then and how they dealt with it.” Simulated by candlelight, visitors will first be taken to the street to see dramatized historical characters such as the soon to be 1820 mayor of Savannah, Thomas Usher Pulaski Charlton, as well as Georgia’s first female doctor Mary Lavender. Then, visitors will enter the house and explore different period-rooms. “In one of our period-rooms, visitors will hear a lady talking about loss and where the soul goes,” Credle said. “In another period room, Dr. Mary Lavender will be treating a patient who has the fever. Local historian Jamal Toure will also be performing and portraying a free man of color talking about the African American populace and how they would experience the

epidemic.” According to Credle, when the Yellow Fever epidemic hit Savannah in 1820, the medical community had no idea that it was the aedes aegypti mosquito that was causing the infections. “The medical community thought it was bad air that emanated from the rice fields and the humidity,” she noted. “But it was actually a particular type of mosquito, the aedes aegypti, that likes clean standing water. In 1820, Savannah had a mild winter and a wet spring and summer, which bred a lot of mosquitoes. It was the perfect storm to cause the Yellow Fever outbreak.” In addition to the Yellow Fever outbreak, Credle said Savannah was facing another issue in 1820, housing shortages. “The year 1820 was tough for Savannah. In January, there was a terrible fire that burned up about 463 buildings in the city,” she said. “So, that catastrophe brought in new people from all over that were looking to help rebuild the city and make a living at the same time.” Credle also noted that as the city became more crowded, more people started getting sick and coming up with various reasons as to what was causing the epidemic. “There were actually two community newspapers at the time and each one had different perspectives on what was actually happening in the city as far as Yellow Fever goes. But Savannah had all these new people coming into the city, and they all got sick because the mosquitoes had unexposed people to bite. Theories started to emerge and people started to blame anything

Medical equipment used during the 1820 Yellow Fever epidemic in Savannah. Photos provided by the Davenport House Museum.

and everything, including each other.” In addition to not knowing the cause of the outbreak, Credle said the medical community had no idea how to treat the symptoms and victims received ruthless medical treatments. “One of our doctors in our program will discuss medical treatment of Yellow Fever and what we would now consider kinda crazy...puking and purging, bleeding, and blistering sort of treatment,” she said. In regards to the symptoms, Credle said victims infected with Yellow Fever would develop a high fever accompanied with the chills, headaches, muscle aches, and vomiting—often becoming severe enough to kill. Many victims seemed to be on the road to recovery when the infection would lead to shock, bleeding, and kidney and liver failure, killing them. “That year, the city lost around 900 people and most of the victims were buried in Colonial Park Cemetery in mass, unmarked graves. It was a devastating year.” Davenport House Museum’s “Living History: Yellow Fever in Savannah” program is based upon fact, making it an even spookier experience. “We intentionally do this program in October because people are interested in seeing things that are creepy,” Credle said. “We thought we could compliment the ghost tour industry with something that’s a little bit different because we want folks to participate in all the options with regards to entertainment, or edu-tainment.” “Living History: Yellow Fever in Savannah” will run every Fri. and Sat. in Oct. Performances start at 7 p.m. To purchase tickets or for more information visit davenporthousemuseum.org or call 912-236-8097.

‘Noel W Anderson: Heavy is the Crown’ considers Black experience and its legacies between the temporal brackets of two “kings”–1963 when Martin Luther King Jr. presented his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech and 1992, the brutal beating of Rodney King and his subsequent plea “Can we all just get along…?” The printed works, tapestries, and paperworks on view in the exhibition utilize found imagery from various media and archives that are reprocessed by Anderson through assorted means of distortion and manipulation to collectively expose the haunting relationship of black masculine (mis)representation to structures of power. 10 a.m.. Chris Jericho’s Fozzy returns with a performance at Victory North By Angie Miller

angie@connectsavannah.com

Fozzy, a heavy metal band fronted by professional wrestler Chris Jericho are bringing their “Save the World Tour” to Victory North on Fri., Oct 8.

Originally starting out as a cover band, Fozzy was formed in Atlanta by Rich Ward, guitarist and front man of the rap metal band Stuck Mojo, and professional wrestler Chris Jericho in 1999. Photo provided by the artist.

According to their bio, Fozzy has been about “hard work, dedication, and delivering great rock n’ roll to their devoted fans worldwide; reminding them that music is all about invoking dirty, sweaty jubilation and doing it loudly.” Originally starting out as a cover band, Fozzy was formed in Atlanta by Rich Ward, guitarist and front man of the rap metal band Stuck Mojo, and professional wrestler Chris Jericho in 1999. With the existence of hundreds of other cover bands, Ward and Jericho decided to differentiate themselves by developing a backstory about how Fozzy came to be. Their backstory stated that Fozzy was an early 80s metal band who wrote a long list of classic tunes, then languished in Japan for 20 years because they’d signed a bad record deal. Releasing their self-titled album in 2000, “Fozzy” consisted mostly of cover songs of 80s rock bands: Dio, Twisted Sister, and Judas Priest. The last two songs on the album were, however, original songs. It was then that Fozzy decided to drop the backstory and take themselves more seriously by writing original music. Since their debut album, Fozzy has continuously evolved their sound and they have a total of seven full-length albums in their music catalogue. One of their more well-known hits “Judas” topped out at number five on the Mainstream Rock chart in 2017. Their most recent single “Sane” was released in May 2021. In addition to touring solo, Fozzy has shared the stage with well-known rock bands such as Metallica, KISS, Avenged Sevenfold, Drowning Pool, and Buckcherry. With special guests Black Satellite, Seven Year Witch, and the Lonely Ones, doors to the show will open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $23. For more information or to purchase tickets visit eventbrite and search for the band.

“... a fiery hot and soulful Southern big band that is the ‘Hope Diamond’ of entertainment. That is to say, there is only one and it is spectacular!... This is Great American Music at its finest.” —Broadway World
