BEST OF SAVANNAH RESULTS ARE IN! Most of you know the drill by now, but for those who don’t – here’s the deal: • The winners are the ones who get the most votes from our readers. • New and/or otherwise noteworthy winners receive an extended profile, with photo. This is something we do at our editorial discretion, to highlight new winners, new categories, or some otherwise remarkable winner. *All other winners receive a short blurb. Keep an eye open on runners-up, as they often win the following year.

I would personally like to thank everyone involved in this year’s publication. Noelle Wiehe, Editor who did the majority of this work. I’m not sure what we would have done without her. Her efforts truly were “best of”. Brandy Simpkins, Community/Event Journalist, contributed heavily to the editorial sections of this issue and assisted our editor in many aspects. Jamie Burton, Multimedia Journalist. She keeps our readers in the know thought the day on all of our social media platforms. Our Senior Art Director/ Production Manager Hunter McCumber, who has the vision and artistic talent that few possess. He went above and beyond to make this edition a visual success. Our amazing sales team Bucky Bryant, Lauren Wolverton, and Logan Hinton. They are always up for a challenge and will meet and exceed any goal you throw in front of them. Mandy Younce, Regional Digital Sales Director for making sure we are the best digital company in the market. The distribution is done by the one and only Mayor of The Original Pinkie Masters, Wayne Franklin. Office Manager Wendy Wickham takes on every task and no question ever goes unanswered. Wendy keeps all of us in line. We have some awesome contributors that pitched in to make this a special edition too: Chris Sweat, Bunny Ware, Brittany Herren, Lindy Moody, Nicole Youngblut, Melissa Hayes, Beth Stewart, DJ Hellerman and Frank Ricci. We also got the “Best Local Photographer” to shoot the cover photo, Adrianna Iris Boatwright did a beautiful job, as always. We are thankful for Peregrin for providing us with a beautiful location. Thanks to Charles H. Morris and everyone at the Kehoe Iron Works for hosting the awards ceremony. We hope you enjoy the issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. We appreciate everyone who voted. Now, it’s time to celebrate! Cheers!

Welcome to the Best of Edition

10

My creative director and I spent a moment or two working to find alternate words to put on this cover. The whole issue is already formed around our “Best of” competition. So, what else could we use to describe what all readers could find inside of this issue? Well, we landed on what we had from the start. The folks, events, businesses listed are simply what their titles state: they’re the best. Being a wordsmith in all aspects of my life -most of the time- I simply wanted to state just that. These winners are chosen because they’re to best at what they do, what they’ve done or what they offer the community we live in on an everyday basis. They were voted, they won and now they celebrate. Please enjoy our compounded list of The Best of Savannah 2021. - Noelle Wiehe

The citizens of the district re-elected Johnson for 3 subsequent terms, where he received over 75% of the popular vote. During his tenure as an Alderman, Mayor Johnson served as Mayor Pro Tem and Vice Chairman of Council. Johnson used his platform to advocate on behalf of the least, the last and the lost; and to promote inclusion and equity for all of Savannah’s citizens. Upon finding out that he was voted ‘Best City Employee’ in the ‘Best Of Savannah’ competition, Johnson said, “To God be the glory because this has been a trying year both personally and professionally.” Johnson said the award is not his alone. “When you see me standing here, they say Van Johnson because it’s the face that they see, but I’m really a representative of a 2,400-member team,” Johnson said. “When the Super Bowl is won, everyone is going to the quarterback, but the fact is that the quarterback can’t be very effective if his line is not protecting him, if the running back is not running or the defense is not holding the line.” Johnson credits all city employees. “Every single day, every single employee, no matter what department they work in, is making it happen,” Johnson said. “I hope to make them feel more valued.” Johnson said that the entire city of Savannah team hopes to get even better. “I accept it on behalf of team Savannah,” Johnson said.

The CEO, Whitney Gilliard, defined Gilliard and Company as a 501c (3) nonprofit that focuses on ending the foster care to homelessness pipeline as well as serving other resources including trauma intervention and essential support services for individuals and families in the foster care system. Gilliard said she has been in the system and she knows what it’s like. She said she also knows what it’s like to be marginalized and to feel like someone’s service project, so G&Co is very intentional in making sure that’s not the case for the young adults who join their program. “We are very genuine in what we do, and I am a firm believer in lived experiences,” Gilliard said. “You can’t necessarily reach people unless you truly have been in their predicament, and I believe that, along with our genuine intentions, is truly what captured the heart of our community.” Gilliard said when people think of foster care, they generally do not think of quality, and a value of G&Co is to ensure that their young adults do not have less than quality experiences. “One thing we never, never, ever waver on is the quality of care that we give to them,” Gilliard said. “It doesn’t matter how expensive; it doesn’t matter how out of the way; it doesn’t matter how inconvenient — they deserve it and we stand firm on that.” Gilliard said that she wants young adults to feel hope for their future when they work with G&Co. “I hope that Gilliard and Company emulates that we are the most hopeful place on earth,” she said. Gilliard said for G&Co to have won Best Nonprofit Organization in the ‘Best of Savannah’ means the community sees what the organization is doing and stands right behind them. The CEO said she feels the acknowledgement is less of an accolade and more of the community speaking back to the organization. “I feel like getting this award is the entire community of Savannah looking at us saying ‘keep going, keep doing your work, keep pushing,’ and ‘we’re here for you and we’re standing after you,’” Gilliard said. “That’s the message that we received and it is very encouraging.”

Flock to the Wok

If on any given weekend night, you have seen the line that wraps around the block of Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., then it should be no surprise that Lulu’s Chocolate Bar has earned three of “Connect Savannah’s Best Of” Awards. Co-Owner Janine Finn is proud of the awards: “Lulu’s definitely feels the love from our Savannah community. Of course, we are always thrilled when we win Best Desserts and Best Martinis, but it is especially sweet that we won Best Wait Staff when we were only open for indoor dining for six weeks once the pandemic happened. We feel very blessed and appreciated.” The first award is Best Wait Staff. The key to a great server is being attentive but unnoticed, and LuLu’s seems to have perfected the science. Rain or shine, night or day, busy or slow, customers know that LuLu’s waiters will always have a smile on their face. Best Martini is the second award for Lulu’s Chocolate Bar. I am no expert at deciphering martinis, but I do know what it takes to make it right. Stirred and not shaken as to avoid the drink being too watered down, which is contrary to the popular spy saying. If you are going with a classic version, it needs to be dry. But Lulu’s put themselves on the martini map by creating and selling an array of decedent variations. My favorite of a long list of stirred cocktails is the Espresso Martini. I find that a bitter, yet boozy pick-me-up is the perfect companion to any of their luscious desserts. Finally, and it goes without saying, Lulu’s has been dubbed Best Desserts. You shouldn’t make it your namesake if it can’t be held true. It would take me multiple pages to name which dessert is truly best, so I encourage you to decide for yourself. Whether it is a sumptuous slice of Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie or a velvety portion of Chai Cheesecake, I am positive that you will also declare Lulu’s your personal best dessert destination. If you want to pop into the award-winning spot, Finn says, “Lulu’s will finally reopen for limited inside dining again this month. We will open it up to full inside dining once we are fully staffed again. We are still looking for awesome people to join our team.”

Leopold’s Ice Cream has been a Savannah tradition since 1919. Their ice cream, soups and sandwiches are made fresh in-house each day, and a new smile is born every minute. Runner-up: Ben & Jerry’s

What makes a grocery store an award-winning grocery store? For the Jones family, there are a few long-lasting, tried and true factors. You cannot be a successful family run business for over 40 years without knowing a few things about operating a small business. As Owner Mike Jones puts it, “This year will be our 41st year. It’s an honor to not only be Savannah’s locally owned supermarket but to be considered the best as we enter our third generation—it is a privilege.” Sadly, the way of good customer service and a close community-based food stall is all but a memory in most of our world. Almost everywhere in America you find cities overrun with large chain stores that cycle people in and out by the masses. To say customer service is often last would be an understatement. For Red and White, the customer’s voice is always heard. At no point does our community have to go through some large corporate structure to reach middle management on the phone. When the Low Country speaks, the Joneses listen. Not only is the customer experience convenient, but so is the location. Red and White has become known as one of the best because of its central positioning. Whether a bustling Saturday or after happy hour on Wednesday, the neighborhood can easily drop in for a quick last minute grocery grab and see some of their favorite local grocers always ready to meet them with a smile. This would not be a true piece about Jones’ Red and White without mentioning the barbeque. I don’t know how they do it, what the secret recipe is, or how to find a better deal, but I do know that smoked meat has put Red and White on the map. “We believe you have to keep pushing forward and reinvesting to remain relevant. In 2020, we completed full remodels of both our Savannah stores with an emphasis on our popular smoked BBQ departments, increased deli and bakery products, and the addition of made fresh daily sushi…made in store by the Hans Family.” In a time when such emphasis is put on locally-owned restaurants and eateries, Savannahians seem to know how lucky they are to have this slice of nostalgia still sitting proudly on the corner of Habersham and 63rd, and with the new offerings provided by Red and White, the Jones’ aren’t going anywhere soon.

If you live in Savannah and haven’t eaten at Zunzi’s by now, you are well behind the times (and you need to catch up). When it comes to food, Zunzi’s is one of those spots that put Savannah on the map. The Conquistador conquered the culinary sector and has even been named the best sandwich by People Magazine. In yet another race, Connect Savannah’s Best Sandwich Shop, Zunzi’s swept the competition under the rug—deservedly so. Owner Chris Smith is thrilled to once again be recognized. “Anytime we are in the running for a ‘Best of’ award, the first thing that comes to mind is ‘SHIT YEAH!’ Our team works incredible hard, and they deserve every accolade they get!” For the select few that overlooked such a corner stone of the Low Country, please allow me to pique your appetite. Please also allow me to warn you that you will need a rather large one if you plan on dining at Zunzi’s; The Conquistador is aptly named for its vanquishing of voraciousness. Sitting between two blimp-sized slices of French bread is the restaurant’s signature South African chicken, crisp lettuce, provolone and parmesan. The sandwich sounds simple enough, but everyone knows the magic lies in a heavy dosing of the special Zunzi’s Sauce and Zuni’s Dressing. Because sometimes a change in pace is needed, my most recent favorite is the Spread and Pita plate. For the plate you can select up to four different dips, Curry Chicken Salad, Hummus, Avocado, or Ziki, to eat with a heaping of warm tender pita bread, spicy red onion, earthy sliced tomato, and refreshing cucumber. The glorious thing about this version of Zunzi’s classic offerings is that you get it all on one generous plate. A dip here with pita, or a smear there with cucumber and your senses are taken on a roller-coaster of redolence. For those who have eaten Zunzi’s enough times to be considered a regular, the idea of trying Zunzi’s as a new iteration is mind-blowing. According to Smith, “Zunzi’s is entering a new chapter. … Later this month we will be moving to 236 Drayton St. and opening Zunzibar right next door. Now you will be able to get your favorite Zunzi’s sandwich while you sip on a beach beer, frozen daiquiri or cocktail.”

BEST THAI RESTAURANT

Anyone who has had the pleasure of dining at Chiryia’s on Victory Dr. knows the experience there isn’t just all about the food. Sure, there are incredible Thai-fusion dishes that are famous in Savannah: drunken noodles, pad thai, the dreamy coconut infused curries — the list goes on and on. But, everyone knows the soul of the restaurant comes from the hands and heart that make the place run: Chiryia Moore. The restaurant’s namesake isn’t hard to find. If Chiryia’s is open, Moore is in the kitchen — not-so-large, but definitely in charge. She makes every order fresh, and by hand, using recipes passed down from generations. And if you’re lucky enough to be there when she finds a few minutes to spare, you’ll get to meet her and that infectious - and hilarious - personality that fills the room with joy and positivity. Moore grew up in Thailand, but moved with family to Hawaii in 1977. She started taking English classes at a local university, where she met her future husband, who just happened to be her professor. It wasn’t long before she started her first restaurant job — at McDonald’s. “I did so well, they wanted to promote me,” Moore said. “But, a friend of mine said to me ‘Hey there’s a cooking school here that’s free, you want to come?’ So, I quit and went to cooking school. I graduated from that with top of the class.” She was offered a position at a restaurant at a resort where she learned the restaurant industry from the inside out, and knew it was where she was meant to be. “I said ‘Wow, this is what I like.’ It’s what really relaxes me, you know? I was so good, I was making lots of money. I had a Louis Vuitton back then, you know?” She found her way from Hawaii to the mainland, and eventually settled with her husband and family in Savannah. The first iteration of Chiryia’s opened on the Southside in 2007. The current location on Victory Dr. opened in 2014 and the business has grown exponentially in just under a decade there. Her food is a mix of her heritage: a Chinese father and Thai mother. She learned the secrets of family cuisine from her sister, who you may often find in the kitchen alongside her. “My food is influenced both ways,” Moore said. I always combine those two styles together, and that’s what makes my food unique. I break all the rules; everything I do. You have to test the balance of things, with food and in life. Bitter, salty, sweet, sour and spicy. To me, if you get those things down and balance it out, you can break any rule. My cooking is for the eyes first, then the smell, then the taste. It’s a whole experience that I love to share!”

BEST LOCALINFLUENCER

Brittany Merrill Brittany Merrill is no stranger to most of your social media feeds, at over 15K followers on Instagram. Giving you a peek at the person behind the ‘gram, Brittany had a conversation with Connect Savannah to discuss life, friendship and doing what you love. CS: Do you identify as an influencer? BM: “I’ve never been asked that before. It feels weird. Being called an ‘influencer’ is a little uncomfortable for me. I don’t see myself as someone just making money off of the internet. It’s more like sharing my life with my followers. Keeping myself transparent and open. I have a bunch of friends on the internet and the term influencer takes away that deep connection.” CS: What is a typical day for you? BM: “I am a very fast-paced person. I wear a lot of hats, literally and physically. I am always awake by 8 a.m. and immediately answer emails and chill with my phone a bit. From there, it’s shooting and making content. In the evening, I make dinner with my roommate. From 6-8 p.m., I am always doing something for myself, something I love, totally uninterrupted by my cell phone. Without that time, I don’t have freedom.” CS: Where did you get the idea for your spell books? BM: “I am a big manifestation and planning type of girl. Not type A, but I have a lot of different branches to my tree. That means things can get overwhelming. With so many creative ideas it is very important for me to be able to write freely, without expectation. These are like dump journals. I don’t feel like it needs to be perfect. So, I created them for myself and when I shared them people started asking for them.” CS: What excites you about being an influencer? BM: “I really love meeting so many amazing people. I wish this didn’t sound cliche, but the people I’ve met on the internet have become my best friends and changed my life. I would never have met them without these platforms.” CS: What platforms are you on the most? BM: “In order: IG, Pinterest, Twitter, Tik-Tok. That’s it. I don’t use Snapchat. That’s kind of embarrassing. Some of my friends have 400-day streaks. I don’t have any streaks.” CS: What do you see as the purpose of your work? BM: “I want other people to feel as confident and live as colorfully as they want in the clothes they wear.” CS: What does being voted Best Influencer mean to you? BM: “First of all, this is a huge bucket list that has been checked off. I have wanted to be published since 2016. It almost makes me feel a little more solidified in my career choice. Sometimes, people look down on my decision because it is not traditional. Seeing myself on a cover and standing beside a realtor, firefighter, and photographer — all such successful people — is validating. It makes me feel like I am truly living my purpose.” CS: Is there anything else you’d like to add? BM: “I want to encourage anyone feeling discouraged that it is not too late to start your own dream job. If anyone feels like you’re not on your own path to take a moment and follow your path. It will always lead you to success.”

Samantha Long

28

Roughly six years ago, Samantha Long was ready to leave D.C. and was shopping around for her new hometown. It took only one digital glance at Savannah to decide this was the place for her. “To be honest, I just looked online and saw Forsyth,” she said. “I knew Savannah was coastal and beachy, but I had no idea about the intense flora and fauna here and the walkability of the city. One of the reasons I love NYC so much is because of the walkability and the parks, and Savannah has all of that, too, but at a smaller, slower pace.” Now you can follow Long — soonto-be Culberson — her fiancé Keaton, and their three dogs on their Savannah adventures on Samantha’s Instagram account, @samanthainsavannah. The account began as a way to show friends and family what she was up to. But then suddenly people Samantha didn’t know were hitting her up for advice too. Her account is now just over 7,000-followers strong — at the time of publishing — and growing. “Everything I post is truly where we go on a regular basis,” she said. “I would never recommend or post about a business that I didn’t absolutely adore. We really follow our heart.” She also follows her wallet and her furry companions. Long focuses on places that are affordable and dog-friendly whenever possible. “The best thing about Instagram is that it’s for the people,” Long said. “It’s a cool way to highlight local businesses while still staying true to who I am.” She hopes that, by sharing the places she loves to hang with her followers, she can help support the local restaurateurs and retailers. “Honestly, I’m just trying to pay it back to all of these businesses that are open and willing to serve the tourists that are coming back into town because it’s been a struggle for them,” she said. Long also hopes to spread downtown Savannah love to locals on the outskirts. The historic district has so much to offer. Long hopes that locals in Pooler, the Islands, and beyond find value in her advice. “The real reason I keep coming back to it and funneling so much time and energy into it is because I love to know that people are having a good time when they come downtown,” she said. “When people send me pictures of their meal or tell me about their special time they had because of something I recommended, that makes me smile so big.”

Adriana Iris Boatwright Capturing a moment in a time during an era of reduced attention spans isn’t easy. With an eye for spontaneity honed by shooting live bands, Savannah photographer Adriana Iris Boatwright owns quite an impressive social media photography catalog. She also has a ton of magazine, fashion and travel work to her credit, as well as corporate assignments for Coca-Cola, H&M, Ghost Coast and Paramount Pictures. Readers apparently see what those paying clients see, voting her the best local photographer. A Savannah pro since 2012, Boatright cites among the many advantages of freelancing in Savannah, “The ability to create with so many people in so many different areas. From reality TV to movie sets to live shows and weddings, I have had the honor to document many beautiful and honest moments.” Boatwright also enjoys the freedom the freelance lifestyle affords her. Able to set up a virtual office almost anywhere, she can engage in many projects that exclusivity with a single employer wouldn’t allow. Her work shows how much she enjoys it. Boatwright’s Instagram account boasts thousands of bold photographs of thought-provoking subjects, heavy on color contrast, with interesting backdrops and vast quantities of human expression. When notified she had won the Connect Savannah Best Photographer Award, Boatwright gushed about her city. “I am absolutely blown away,” she said. “It is such an honor and I am so grateful. Savannah is the perfect canvas for any artist, and to be surrounded by its beauty and live in a community that encourages your work is a dream come true. I would like to thank Connect Savannah readers for encouraging me and supporting me along the way.” Like most artists, the previous year was full of trepidation. Her response was to simply power through it. She continued documenting her surroundings — with photography and writing — and kept up her freelance work for The Savannah Morning News and this publication, but creative projects and nonlocal publications took a backseat. She also contracted COVID-19 last year and continues to deal with a few lingering issues. Looking forward, she sees a packed schedule as demand for her work rises dramatically. “I am turning my lens this summer towards Puerto Rico, hoping to capture the state of the island four years after Hurricane Maria,” she said. “Also, the fashion world is once again trying to ramp up. So, as we speak, I am fully booked until New Year’s Eve.”

Keystone Postcard At the onset of the global pandemic, Victor Solis and his wife Becky Solis had a heart-to-heart. “I said, ‘there’s going to be two types of people who come out of this pandemic: People who just got through it or people who come out successful,’” recalled Victor. Victor and Becky decided that they were going to be successful. Victor on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Becky on lead vocals, and Matt Daggett on lead guitar and backing vocals make the eclectic, indie-rock band, Keystone Postcard and this year’s Best Band by Connect Savannah. “It’s kind of surreal,” Victor said. “We went from the lowest point to winning and award.” As full-time musicians, it would have been easy for Victor, Becky and the band to quit. Instead, they got innovative and started livestreaming shows that they played in their driveway. “While everything was shut down, we were like, well, we have all of our gear, so we set up all of our gear in our driveway and playing,” Victor said. “People started to really enjoy it, so we started live streaming them on Facebook and playing shows twice a week.” The first couple of videos had hundreds of shares and over 10,000 views. Then, WJCL and WTOC did a piece on the locally acclaimed and aptly named “Driveway Concerts.” The stories got picked up over and over again by news stations all over the country and eventually, that translated into Facebook followers from all across the U.S. “It just blossomed,” Victor said. “We went viral.” The band started doing YouTube videos every day and posting regularly on Facebook, which allowed fans and followers to further connect with them. Becky and Victor weren’t just fabled musicians living the tortured, artist life from their hip, Savannah apartment. They were a mom and dad cramming music gear and video equipment into their garage at 2 a.m. while their almost 2-year old and almost 5-year old slept. “The videos and responding to comments would take hours, but we were getting so much of a response that we felt like we had to keep it up,” Becky said. “During a time where people didn’t have dependability on anything else, they could rely on us.” Once things started opening up and the band started playing live again, the pair noticed that people who were fans of the band’s live streams were coming out to shows. “People would tell us that we got them through the pandemic,” Becky said. Keystone Postcard has capitalized on their “viral” success. They boast over 1.9K followers on Facebook, have a slew of live shows coming up, and are planning on releasing a new album titled, “This Time,” exclusively on their new website as of May 13. “The pandemic made us realize the value in what we do and who we are as people and musicians,” Victor said.

SPREAD THE FACTS NOT THE VIRUS

www.sjchs.org/vaccine

When Trelani Michelle writes, she does her best to write to her people. That is why she is so relatable. That is why she is good. A friend and former mentor liked to tell her, “I don’t convince. I convey.” And, that is the best way to sum up Michelle as a writer: a conveyor of people; a voice of not only her generation, but of the pillars who make up the ruins of history. Her history; our history. Trelani Michelle stops to read all the historical markers, researches who the land first belonged to, asks “where yo’ great-grandparents” were from, and traces the roots of the beats and flavors. Having authored “Krak Teet,” an oral history of black Savannah elders, she refers to herself as the modern-day Zora Neale Hurston. One of her latest works, “Krak Teet: A Catalog of Black Savannah’s Biographies,” that was published in December of 2019, dives into the parts of history that define the people of Savannah, but that often go unheard. It is the first-hand accounts of grandchildren of the enslaved. She interviewed 19 African American elders over the age of 80 about living in the city between 1920 and1970. She took all of those stories and memories and created a book that has turned into a project that challenges the notion of black interest in literature and history. People of Savannah connected with it because it was familiar and true. “We’re so much more alike than we are different,” Michelle said. “I think that’s why people resonate with it; they see themselves in it.” That is the case with all of Michelle’s works — “Krak Teet,” “Girls Who Ain’t Afraid to Curse When Communicating with God,” “Women Who Ain’t Afraid to Curse When Communicating with God,” “Purple Petals: Letters to Self,” “Getting Across,” and “What the Devil Meant for Bad” — they present a set of truths that are challenging, yet relatable. Yesterday’s truths, but somehow today’s familiar truths. A sense of “blackness” in totality beyond the rigid history often storied by old, white men, and instead translated as a complete portrait of humanity by a young, black woman who postures not only the importance of Southern, Black culture for the sake of entertainment, but as a mode of transmitted legacy for the importance of not just her people, but all people. From writing her first complete story at the age of 14, to now at the age of 33, Michelle has spent nearly two decades documenting the veiled histories across the African diaspora and encouraging her readers to tell their own stories, in their own language and their own dialect. To further in that effort, she’s currently working on a book that teaches other how to collect oral histories from their families, neighborhoods, churches, or some outside community that they’re interested in. Also in the cards, a “Krak Teet” documentary and a creative hub for other women writers. “There are a good bit of writer’s residencies out there — places for writers to get away from their everyday lives and be inspired to create — but they can feel pretty uninviting to women writers with children and non-white women writers,” Michelle explained. “I want to create a space that’s more accessible.”

The Savannah Underground

38

The Savannah Underground made a splash earlier this year at the Clyde Venue with totally immersive, terrifying scenes from Savannah’s haunted history. Now, they’re celebrating winning Best Local Theatre Production and looking ahead at a bright future. Co-founder Kewaan Drayton says The Savannah Underground was founded in 2020 because he felt like Savannah’s spooky scene needed something fresh and new. “I gauge how I respond to different attractions and experiences in Savannah,” Drayton said. “Walking tours never really did it for me. Trolly tours, ghost tours, they never hit the nail on the head for me. I wanted to create something where people can get the history; they can get scared; they can have fun.” For Drayton, that meant literally surrounding audiences with Savannah’s haunted past. With top-notch actors, excellent costume designs, and a whole lot of Holy water, The Savannah Underground is completely immersive and guaranteed to spook. In just a few weeks, The Savannah Underground will perform its first show at its new location at 415 W. Boundary St. Drayton says they aren’t stopping there. Eventually, he hopes The Savannah Underground has a permanent home in the heart of Downtown Savannah, near Plant Riverside District. He also hopes to create new opportunities for local actors. “We want to have partnerships with different acting troupes in town so Savannah actors can get the clout they truly deserve,” Drayton said. “We want to build onto this nice art community we already have here. We want to keep helping out and keep giving back to the community.” When asked what he’d like to say to everyone who voted for The Savannah Underground this year, Drayton said he’d thank them and ask them to keep giving feedback. “This gives myself and my team the courage to keep going, to keep building onto the experience that we’ve already created, and to continue listening to what people are telling us about the show,” Drayton said. You can check out The Savannah Underground at their new location this June. Stay up to date at thesavannahunderground.com.

NIGHTLIFE AND DRINK

BEST BLOODY MARY BEST CITY MARKET BAR BEST DIVE BAR

Rob Ring

BEST DOWNTOWN BAR

It may be a surprise that Savannah’s Best Bartender has only been slinging drinks for about nine months. Rob Ring works full time as a Yard Manager at MarineMax. He decided to give bartending a try after seeing how much fun his friends were having working at Cheers to You. Now, every Friday night at Island Sports Bar on Wilmington Island, you’ll find Ring behind the bar — standing over 6-feet tall, rocking a Hawaiian shirt and long salt and pepper hair, you can’t miss him. Ring doesn’t have fancy bar tricks or even a specialty cocktail menu. In fact, his favorite drink is a cold PBR or a simple Jameson and ginger. But Ring has mastered one thing that flash and flair can’t make up for: great service. If he’s served you before, Ring has your go-to drink order on the bartop before you even sit down. If you decide to play cornhole across the bar or go outside for a smoke break, Ring keeps an eye on your drink and delivers a fresh one when it’s time. “You’ll never come here and wait more than three minutes — ever,” Ring said. “I see you when you walk in, and I know what you want. Nobody wants to come to the bar and wait.” Ring has proven that great service brings a crowd. Over the last nine months, Ring has transformed ISB into the hot spot to be on a Friday night. “When he first started, I’d come sit up here and there would be like four people here,” Katie Kelly, Ring’s wife, said. “I would be bored and call it a night at 10. It just slowly got to be a more diverse crowd and got busier and busier, and now I close it down with him.” Ring says he loves a lot of things about bartending at ISB, but the thing he loves the most is making people feel good and helping them have a good time. “The whole point of coming to a bar is to relax and have a good time,” Ring said. “I like to take care of people; I like to see people happy — just happy.” Kelly says she thinks Ring gains just as much from bartending as he gives. “It’s just his vibe,” she said. “He’s become this island dude. He should’ve been doing this for a long time.”

To say that Pour Larry’s swept the Nightlife and Drink category this year would be an understatement. The underground bar won seven categories. You read that right, seven. Pour Larry’s took home the titles of “Best Overall Bar”, “Best City Market Bar”, “Best Dive Bar”, “Best Downtown Bar”, “Best Happy Hour”, “Best Bloody Mary”, and “Best Savannah Drink” for their iconic Gummy Worm cocktail. Co-owner Jolynn Romano says about seven years ago, Pour Larry’s underwent a major renovation. “It used to have box TVs,” she laughed. “That was just seven years ago. From what this bar came from to what it is now is so different.” With the renovation came a bit of a rebrand for the bar. Pour Larry’s started hosting theme nights, turned the bar into a dance club at night, and really focused on growing their daytime crowd. Romano installed tons of bar games like life-size Operation, giant Connect Four, Hook and Ring and more. “That’s kind of become our identity,” Romano said. “It’s what we’re known for.” Romano says she thinks a few factors contributed to Pour Larry’s growing success and major Best Of Savannah win. She says its prime location appeals to tourists, and the bar’s stellar customer services keeps the locals coming back. “All our bartenders are very happy, very bubbly, they’re greeting people when they walk in,” she said. “We make sure that we have the best staff that I can find.” The future of Pour Larry’s looks bright. Romero says she wants to bring in more games, keep focusing on great service and introduce new specialty drinks. Don’t worry, the Gummy Worm cocktail isn’t going anywhere! Grab a drink at Pour Larry’s at 206 W St. Julian St. at Savannah’s City Market.

Many drinking and dining establishments promise to take you away to another place, one loftier and more fabulous than your current status. Few deliver like Peregrin, the popular bar that sits atop the Perry Lane Hotel and Connect Savannah’s dual for Best Hotel Bar and Best Rooftop Bar. “It is such a pleasure to be given such an accolade, and very telling of the heart and soul we pour into our work,” said Perry Lane Marketing Manager Andrea Locorini. The aesthetic of Perry Lane and Peregrin is inspired by Adelaide Harcourt, a grand dame of old Savannah who happens to be entirely fictional. The invented muse, a product of Denver’s art curating and consulting outfit NINE dot ARTS, is a world traveler who returned to Savannah from faraway adventures to infuse her global experiences with the essence of the Hostess City. Her story is manifested in Peregrin. Rooted in the Latin word peregrinus, meaning traveler, the open-air space does take you to a place unique in the city. The rooftop bars on River and Bay streets have similar river views, but none are quite like the sights from high up in middle of the Savannah historic district. Church steeples, roof spires, and treetops compete for attention and views in every direction are fantastic. “We have a front row seat to the most incredible sunsets, we get to feel close to the rainbows after the rain, and we are able to feel the Savannah sun touch our skin while sipping tasty cocktails, enjoying delicious food, and taking in the gorgeous city skyline,” Locorini explained. “It is an experience that you can only get at Peregrin.” That also applies to the cocktail menu, currently matching spring with several interesting combinations of fruit, spice, honey and spirits. An intriguing take on a classic, The Gold-Fashioned introduces apricot and Earl Grey bitters to the party with satisfying results. Peregrin was ahead of the Frozé craze curve, and still offers a seasonal selection of frozen cocktails. The wine list typically features a sparkling option rarely seen by the glass. Pair what you’re drinking with a selection from the food menu, an eclectic list of hand-held pickings, barbecue ribs and a substantial burger highlighted by a housemade tomato-chili jam, and you can be anywhere you want, which is what Peregrin aims for. “The atmosphere will whisk you away, allowing you to see things from a new perspective and taste food and drink that embraces worldliness with bright and bold flavors,” Locorini added.

This year marks the 30th anniversary year of Savannah’s most popular sports bar Coach’s Corner. Opened in 1991, it started as an enterprise with nothing but a dream. People continue to flock in for the good bar food, excitement and the super fun atmosphere with music and sports. “We were the first sports bar in Savannah,” recalled Owner John Henderson. “We’ve been around 30 years. It started as a small sports bar, and now it’s an institution. We turned into a sports bar, music venue, and restaurant.” Coach’s Corner’s long run of success has been attributed to their dedication to sports since Henderson has been a diehard Braves fan. “We were able to get games everybody wanted to watch. You always get what you want when you come here. You don’t have to worry about coming here. If there’s a game you want to watch, I’ll find it for you,” Henderson said. The way people want to watch games has changed since they first opened. Other sports bars open and over saturate with multiple big screens. Coach’s Corner has learned to evolve and adapt as to how people want to watch games, provide impeccable customer service, and provide live entertainment in Savannah. “More people come to watch concerts than sports,” Henderson said. “Back in the day, you had to come in to see games by satellite. It was the only way to get it. It’s the evolution of a sports bar. We were only ones to have it.” Coach’s Corner has been steadily booking bands such as regional act The Producers and 80s power tribute bands Freebird The Ultimate Lynyrd Skynyrd Experience, Harvest Moon Celebrating The Music of Neil Young, The Ultimate Van Halen Tribute Band, and many more. The success of their concert bookings sold out six consecutive shows in a row. Henderson is proud to announce Coach’s Corner’s latest upcoming event, The Rush Tribute Project, a Milwaukee-based Rush cover band playing on May 15. Purchasing tickets in advance is recommended due to popular demand. Whether going out to watch sports or music, one thing’s for sure, their loyal patron base still returns to their beloved bar to watch their favorite team—or band—play. Coach’s Corner remains the oldest, tried-and-true event venue of Savannah to this day.

Renegade Paws Rescue

52

Renegade Paws Rescue is about to celebrate its second birthday. Founded on June 3, 2019, this young and ambitious organization is trying to redefine expectations for animal rescue. Co-founded by Jennifer Taylor, Kristin Staples, Becca Watts, and Shelby Westberry, Renegade Paws Rescue is a non-profit organization that rescues and cares for abused, neglected, injured, and abandoned dogs. Taylor, the organization’s director has been working with pet rescues in Savannah since she relocated here nine years ago. After finding a stray dog, working with a local rescue and going through the fostering process, Taylor was hooked. She’s been volunteering and working with animal rescues ever since. With their years of experience, Taylor, Staples, Watts, and Westberry all recognized a need for rescues to be open, nurturing spaces of inclusivity. “Our main focus is to keep pets in homes instead of surrendering them to shelters and rescues,” Taylor said. “No matter who you are, if you care about animals, we are happy to help you and welcome your support. We are different from most rescues and we are doing something everyone told us we couldn’t.” With this in mind, Sara Dietrich created the rescue’s slogan: Rebels for the Paws. They chose Renegade Paws as their name because it’s the term for going your own way. For Taylor, education and awareness are central to Renegade Paw’s mission. “To be honest we cannot rescue our way out of animal issues in the South,” Taylor said. “We need to educate the community. If we join together, we can do this. We can make a big difference.” Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Renegade Paws is helping more people who need help securing food for their animals. In just two years, they’ve rescued and placed over 1,000 dogs and have helped over 100 owners with spay/neuter expenses. Renegade Paws is the only rescue working with the Savannah Police Department and Chatham County Animal Services. Taylor says that her phone number is all over the internet. “All of the officers have my number,” she said. “If they come across an animal in need, they call us in to help. We also work closely with the homeless community. We visit homeless camps at least once per week and make sure the animals have food and flea and tick prevention. Pet companionship is very important. The love of pets shouldn’t be only for wealthy communities.” Renegade Paws operates by private donations and without city or government funding. They hold fundraisers in person and on Facebook. Occasionally they receive a grant and they hope this will grow in the future. Mark your calendar for Wag-O-Ween, their biggest fundraiser held every October. “It is the cutest thing you’ve ever seen,” Taylor said. “All the dogs wear costumes. So, make your plans to come and check it out this year.” For more information visit: renegadepawsrescue.org

Spa Bleu

54

Spa Bleu is celebrating a major milestone this year, taking home the title of “Best Day Spa” for the 10th year in a row. That’s right, for 10 years, the Spa Bleu team has given Savannahians the best massages, facials, spray tans, waxing and more. Owner Morgan Godwin opened Spa Bleu in 2010 at its current location, 101 Bull St. In 2013, Owner Lenon Whitney joined the team. The rest is history. Spa Bleu has expanded from a staff of three to a staff of 22, and will soon be growing again, adding six more treatment rooms. Whitney says the spa was founded around relaxation, and has since evolved into a hub for relaxation to be combined with wellness, medicine and clinical services. What sets Spa Bleu apart from other local day spas, Whitney says, is consistency. “We are consistent with clients, staff, and the community,” he said. “We work hard every day for that consistency and that customer experience. So, to have the community recognize that for 10 years in a row, it means the world to us. It kind of validates what we’re doing and gives us that extra boost.” When asked what he’d like to say to Savannahians that have voted for Spa Bleu for the last ten years, Whitney simply replied, “Thank you.” “That sounds so generic, but that ‘thank you’ means so much,” he said. “It comes with layers of ‘we appreciate you,’ and we want to do everything we can to keep that title. Not just for the title, but for that bar that we keep raising for ourselves and for that client experience that is not like any other. That ‘thank you’ comes with so much.” “Keep us on our toes, Savannah!” Whitney added. Visit Spa Bleu at 101 Bull St. Monday-Saturday.

Picker Joe’s Antique Mall

“I’ve got what I call PFPT, Passion for the Past,” says James Plumlee, owner of Picker Joe’s Antique Mall. “It’s not just the items. It’s the people I meet and the history along the way that I love most about this business. It’s when people come in and say, ‘Oh, my grandmother had this,’ and we share stories. It’s about memories.” Plumlee has been in the pickin’ business for six years now, and despite dealing in antiques, his work never grows old. “We are an experience like no other. It’s not just the items or the stuff in the store. It’s the environment around it,” Plumlee said. “We get travelers from all over the world now. People seek us out all the time because they’re looking to buy or sell things, and they know that we look for the unique and different.” The store also specializes in architectural salvage, rescuing items like doors, gates, fencing, windows, and stained glass before it’s sent to a landfill. “We try to save everything we can. We even import items from Nepal and Egypt,” Plumlee said. Other than picking, Plumlee’s other great love is piloting. His air-scapades are what led him into the antique business in the first place. He spent two and a half years selling aviation antiques from a booth at Wright Square Antique Mall — specialty pieces like the gauges from the Chinese fighter craft he flew in shows for 10 years. Encouraged by the joy and success he found in this hobby, he decided to leave his work in the towing and auto repair business and open up a shop of his own. Plumlee’s next great feat will be televising his two passions with “Sky Pickers,” a show about rapidly sourcing the rare, specialty, or unusual from around the world by air. Picker Joe’s regularly works with the production companies that come through town. They’d been working with the production company of “Great American Pickers” before COVID hit. Inspired by the show, he decided to branch out and create something of his own. “I started thinking we could do something completely different,” Plumlee said. “These set designers come in, and they’re like, ‘We need this, and we needed it yesterday.’ So, we go out and get it. It’s kind of like a rapid response prop location team.” For all things pickin’, Savannah’s film presence, architecture, and history make this the perfect city for Plumlee’s business to thrive. “It’s great. It’s a good feeling. We work really hard,” Plumlee said. “A big thank you to Savannah for believing in us and helping us continue to grow.”

For over three decades, Harkleroad Diamonds & Fine Jewelry has provided sparkling designer and bespoke treasures to Savannahians. Marion Harkleroad began his career as a bench jeweler designing and repairing jewelry before establishing his own business in 1987. Now, Marion and his son Caleb run the business together along with a trusted team of four. “Our store is special because of the people who work here,” Caleb said. “We have such a great team.” The homegrown jewelry store’s services extend far beyond simple retail. An important aspect of the Harkleroad business is crafting, customizing, and transforming to create oneof-a-kind, personalized pieces for their clients. “Design is really where we got our start,” Caleb said. “It’s so cool when someone will stop me in town and point to something on their finger that my dad made them two or three decades ago. People really take a lot of pride in the fact that he made it for them.” While jewelry shopping is almost always a happy task, the Harkleroads also assist customers who have inherited precious heirlooms from passed family members. People come to the store with beautiful, yet outdated, pieces that they want to wear in remembrance. The Harkleroad crew refreshes the jewelry with a customized design that’s both honorific and contemporary. “There are plenty of big box places where you can buy jewelry, and you can even buy diamonds online,” Caleb said. “But we can offer an experience. Our team has great relationships with the people that shop here. They’re the backbone of this place, and we’re very lucky to have them.” This careful consideration of a client’s taste and unique needs is what makes Harkleroad Jewelry what it is. “When someone comes in and has no idea what they want — being able to spend the next hour or so navigating through that to get to the moment when they find the right ring or the right diamond — that makes the job worth it,” Caleb said. “I love coming to work every day.” “A big thank you to the community for voting for us,” Caleb said. “We work really hard to be the best for the people that shop here and to deliver that really perfect experience, and we really appreciate people recognizing that enough to vote for us.”

Chelsea Phillips is closing in on a decade-long reign as Connect Savannah’s Best Realtor. She’s won every year since 2013. That makes this year her ninth win in a row! Last year’s “Best of” column described Phillips like this, “She has a great sense of humor and is very likable – but there’s also quite a bit of steel in this magnolia. She’s smart and detailed and knows exactly what sells.” Specializing in luxury and coastal properties, military relocation, and retirement homes, Phillips makes deals happen. For all the HGTV fans, Phillips has consulted for “Property Virgins,” a show that helps first-time homebuyers through the process of selecting and purchasing their home. Phillips, a University of Georgia alumna, manages the Chelsea Phillips Group with SixBricks brokerage. Reflecting on this past year, Phillips spoke with Connect about how the pandemic impacted her work and her unwavering passion for her profession. Connect Savannah: What has it been like working in Real Estate during the pandemic? Chelsea Phillips: “It has been a year in which you have to grow and adapt to make sure your clients are ahead of the curve. It’s been a year of change. Moving and buying a house is stressful. Then, pile on the stress of this pandemic — It’s been intense. It has taught me how special each individual case is and how closely we need to work with our clients. Everyone has seen this differently. It’s always about how we can make the ideal outcome for the client.” CS: What is something surprising about real estate that Connect readers may not be aware of? CP: “I love data and statistics. Sometimes changing the color of your front door can increase the value of your house dramatically. Real Estate is a science and the best way to help your clients is to know that science.” CS: You’re with SixBricks brokerage now, I saw a sign that said, “If cauliflower can become pizza, you can become a homeowner…” CP: “Each sign has a different saying. The Thomas Square neighborhood is shifting so much and there is a lot of growth in a very short period of time. Sometimes people might not think of themselves as homeowners. Our signs are trying to change that.” CS: What is your favorite part of being a realtor? CP: “Clients. 100%. And, I like negotiating. It is about making sure we are doing the best for each client. Helping give other people their best life, that’s huge. For me, this is the perfect job to have that kind of impact.” CS: What does being voted Best Savannah Realtor mean to you? CP: “Well, it makes me realize I am old. Seriously though, it is a way people show they trust you. That matters so much. I have given my life to real estate. This is how I feel like I am making a difference on the planet. It matters to me. This award is very affirming. I am very thankful for my team and my clients. I am surrounded by the best people. None of what I do could happen without them.”

was referred to hematologist Dr. Barry Luskey. After a few examinations, and extracting pelvic bone marrow to analyze, Dr. Luskey was able to confirm that Wilmer had Waldenström Macroglobulinemia, or a slowgrowing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

This cancer produces a protein that interferes with blood clotting, contributing to the extensive nose bleeds. Dr. Luskey worked closely with the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion to treat this rare disease with chemotherapy and communication every step of the way. Wilmer is receiving a recently developed protocol for treating this lymphoma and has remained active restoring his collection of old boats. “As a retired professor, I appreciated Dr. Luskey’s and St. Joseph’s/Candler’s disciplined approach to this cancer. They continue to update me on new treatments and therapies.”
