INTRODUCTIONS: MEET SHANNON BATES

Shannon Bates remembers the absence as much as the anger.

The recently appointed executive director of Savannah’s SAFE Shelter was just 4-years-old when she realized her mother was being abused. In that moment and many ensuing ones, Bates felt powerless.

“It’s the worst feeling to see your mom in distress and not be able to help, because you’re just a kid,” she said.

Today, that feeling and those memories guide Bates’ work for the domestic violence services center, but for decades, they kept her away from it.

After graduating from Minot State University with a degree in general studies, the Savannah transplant put her servant heart to work at a series of nonprofits far from the domestic-violence space, including Union Mission, Lowcountry Legal Volunteers and the American Cancer Society.

“I think I was just too young at the time to work at SAFE Shelter, given my history,” she said. “It has taken almost my whole career to emotionally and professionally prepare for this.”

Ultimately, it was the COVID-19 pandemic, an empty nest and serendipity that brought Bates to work at SAFE. Her eventsmanagement position with the American Cancer Society had evaporated; her two children had left for college, and she was looking for a new opportunity. She had three places in mind; SAFE Shelter was one of them. As soon as she finished that top-three list, she saw an ad for the executive director position at SAFE.

Still, she wavered. The shelter’s board said the role — overseeing a nearly 30-person team, 48-bed shelter, six transient apartments, an outreach office, fund-raising and wrap-around services — would be “a mountain to climb.” But Bates was ready to rise.

“I felt a tapping on my shoulder telling me this is the mountain I am supposed to climb,” she said.

And climb it she has. Since joining the team in February, Bates has been shifting the internal culture; “untangling, rebuilding and taking the [organization] apart to build a smarter, more forwardthinking” one; strengthening relationships with community partners; and planning for the future.

It’s work she loves, though it’s not without its challenges. Already the state’s second largest domestic-violence shelter, SAFE (which stands for Savannah Area Family Emergency) routinely has more victims than beds. In 2022 alone, the shelter and associated programs served nearly 1,900 people, including close to 500 children.

“I wish we were empty,” Bates said. “But the community has a greater need. We get people from every ZIP code in Savannah. It’s not an isolated culture.”

Through it all, one edict has guided her: “What’s in the best interests of our clients? What do they need us to do?” In her heart, she knows. The decisions she makes every day are fueled by her childhood experiences and providing the help now that she was powerless to give then.

“I want them to know that they’re not alone, that there is hope,”

she said. “It’s dark and scary, but there are people who understand and have answers [victims] may not be able to see.”

As the organization prepares to step into the spotlight for Domestic Violence Awareness month in October, Bates shared her belief in the power of one person to make a difference in the lives of many.

“I tell my team, if you don’t think one person can make a difference, let’s think about Norma Brewin,” she said, referring to the former elementary-school teacher who established SAFE after seeing the movie, Battered. “Because one woman saw a movie, she went door to door asking for donations. Because one woman saw a movie, she recruited three of her friends. Because one woman saw a movie, we helped 1,900 people last year. Doing this work is hard, but it’s worth doing.”

...and Coffee on a Mysterious New Haunt: Agatha's Coffee and Tea House

Nestled in a quiet and sunny nook on MLK Jr. Boulevard sits the new Agatha’s Coffee and Tea House, an off-thebeaten-path experience for both visitors and locals that offers an escape into a mysterious world.

Inside Agatha’s dark surroundings is a beautiful, handmade floor-to-ceiling bookshelf crowded with vintage books, mystery movie posters and memorabilia. Oscar Wilde and “The Hardy Boys,” fill the shelves along with a menu from The Orient Express.

The coffee, tea, and other beverages are served by the smiling barista who takes care of you from behind a fireplace that greets you as you walk in.

Open for nearly six months, the coffee shop already boasts an Agatha Christie book club, plans for a Halloween costume contest, and weekly tips and techniques on ghost hunting.

Agatha’s Coffee and Tea House is the creative endeavor of Darin Farr and his partners, Johnathan Clark and Taía Harris. Farr made Savannah his adopted home ten years ago, and given his past experiences, it’s no surprise he fell into this project.

“I retired from Walt Disney Productions in 2013 and moved here because I wanted to live someplace coastal, but not necessarily a beach town,” Farr says. “I wanted to go somewhere I could wear pants and shirts and stuff like this.”

He points to his dapper attire of a stylish fedora, a colorful necktie, and pressed tan slacks. He spreads out his arms to indicate the setting around him, which fits him perfectly.

“That’s another thing about Savannah… it’s a little quirky, but pretty and historical. Just like Agatha’s.”

Originally from Oklahoma farm country, after graduating from the University of Oklahoma, Farr discovered that his plans to become a police officer were thwarted due to his dyslexia.

Instead, “A friend asked if I really wanted to be shot for 28,000 a year. He and his wife had a pool house with an apartment in Orlando and said I should move there. They got me my job at Disney World in 1980.”

Farr started as a train conductor that summer where he earned six guest letters of praise. Disney promoted him to guest services and the journey took off from there.

“Over the years, I managed seven parades, three fireworks shows, and the Rose Parade,” Farr says proudly.

While Disney fostered Farr’s talents, creativity and customer service, entertaining people was always ingrained into his DNA.

“My mother and father were in the entertainment business, with my dad working in advertising and my mom working for a movie company. Both of them were artsy and very much like George Burns and Gracie Allen. If the laughter ever stopped, I was in trouble.”

Farr pauses and then chuckles in perfect GenX fashion.

“Did you get that? I’m from Bewitched because my name is Darin and my dad was in advertising, too. I kind of loved it growing up. Crazy, huh?”

Crazy…or destined, Darin Farr has certainly taken that love of laughter and entertainment the distance and made it his life’s passion when Agatha’s doors opened on April 11, 2023.

Since the opening, Farr says, “It’s been like an airplane, with the nose coming up off the ground, and it’s starting to really soar.”

For the theme, Farr originally wanted Harry Potter meets Agatha Christie, darkness with warmth.

“I said to this younger group [of people] that I wanted The Waltons glow. Sadly, they didn’t know what The Waltons was.” (The Waltons was an American television drama based on a rural, postDepression family that ran on CBS from 1972-1981.)

“So, instead, we did the Disney flash where it’s bright outside and you come into a place that’s dark. It changes the mood immediately,” Farr notes. “We layered everything… rain sounds, thunder, oldtimey music. There’s a warm fireplace. There’s a golden light. You know—and feel like—you’re in another place and time. It’s almost a speakeasy for coffee and mystery. We’ve blended the 20s, 30s, and 40s into one area.”

Farr chose the murder mystery theme because he loves a good mystery himself and it harkens back to growing up, watching mysteries on the big screen with his parents.

“Agatha Christie, Alfred Hitchcock, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle…they

were the greats and I saw all the movies. We even have their autographs here,” he says as he shows off the treasured pieces hanging on the wall.

And, because of his years of stage acting and creating for Disney, the idea to have a coffee shop named after a serial killer just sparkled and came to life.

“We invented 'Agatha Harper,' the first female serial killer in the United States. Then, we did a murder board on her. As things stand, the detectives are trying to find her, but she’s escaped someplace they don’t know where. They also don’t know if she did the murder or was her brother or was she covering for him? The story is we are looking after her coffee shop for her while she’s on the run.”

Having worked at the happiest place on Earth, Farr brings that Disney attitude to Agatha’s.

“It’s all about the staff. Like any business, we’ve had our share of folks who didn’t work out, but after whittling it down, we’ve got the right team working together.” He laughs and adds. “For God’s sake, it’s coffee. How hard can this be? We all have some food and beverage experience behind us, as well as a love of the arts and entertainment.”

One such star employee is Eve Baker, who stands behind the fireplace, bar to serve customers. She considers herself, “the glue” of Agatha’s and there’s no argument from Farr.

“We have something wonderful here,” Baker says as she serves a steaming latte to a waiting customer.

“There’s kind of an indescribable quality here because we’re trying to go back a hundred years and give you an experience, but we also seem to have created an automatic atmosphere. It’s hard to put a finger on it, but it’s like a safe space. Everyone who comes into Agatha’s seems at peace and just wants to chill. I’ve never seen an unhappy person hanging out here.”

Like so many now-locals, Baker, too, is a transplant.

“I came from Cleveland in 2012 and never left.” Now, she’s a fixture at Agatha’s and excited about the future. “We’re always going to be improving and consistent with what we offer. We want to work with people, know what they want and like, and create a great experience. We want to make it fun for them.”

She continues, “People come in here and see it’s done just for them with that extra care and love that comes from good coffee, good pastries, and good customer service.”

It’s not only about the beverage menu, though. Agatha’s serves a selection of pastries as well as offering pizza and wings into the late-night hours. They can be found online, as well as through apps such as GrubHub and DoorDash for deliveries.

Farr stresses that as much as Savannah is a touristcentric town, they did this for the people who live here.

“If the tourists find us, then hot-diggity, but we’ve priced Agatha’s for locals. We have a parking lot, so we want people to think of this as their hangout, their clubhouse. We want them to come and embrace what we’ve created for them. It’s special and unique. We welcome folks with an open heart and mind…just the way we have been received.”

Santa Maybe... a Criminal

Jason Usry of Savannah says there’s a fascination with true crime, particularly how it’s covered online and by the national media. The public’s interest led Usry to create a farcical/fictional true crime podcast called “Santa Maybe... a Criminal.” The cast of voice actors is comprised of known podcasters.

“Santa has been arrested in a small Georgia town and something has to be done to save Christmas in the first season,” Usry said. “It’s thirteen episodes… think about how every “Dateline” episode goes, only with Santa Claus as the suspect.” He is currently working on season two’s thirteen episodes. Murdaugh Murders Podcast

Finally, many people may have followed local journalist, Mandy Matney’s “Murdaugh Murder” podcast that garnished her national attention. Since the verdict, Matney and her podcast partner, Liz Farrell, have changed the name to “True Sunlight – Exposing Crime and Corruption” and hope take a deep dive into new instances of corruption and crime throughout the United States. The genesis of Halloween costumes dates back over 2,000 years ago, but in modern times, the practice has become quite elaborate. If you take a look at any popular costume website or peruse any costume store, it becomes obvious that a “good costume” is correspondent with the monetary investment you are willing to make. A costume with all the corresponding accessories can cost you upwards $200-300. However, it is important to point out that pecuniary power does not a good costume make. Even with dedicating an entire paycheck to your look, you are bound to step out in the exact same getup as everyone else. So, if your goal is a truly unique costume that is not harsh on the wallet, vintage is your solution.

Lucky for you, Savannah has some of the best vintage shopping in the southeast. As an avid vintage collector, myself, I can tell you that some of the best shops can be found throughout the historic and Starland districts. Here is a breakdown of some of my favorite shops and the types of costumes you can put together with their offerings.

VINTAGE VORTEX

Located in the Starland District at 2413 Bull St., Vintage Vortex is a great shop that offers an abundant selection for men & women alike. They lean into Halloween and usually have a few racks of suggested garments for Halloween costumes, but be sure to look beyond those offerings. They tend to specialize in true period pieces that can be styled in eras spanning from the 1920’s to the 1980’s and beyond (with a little creativity). The key with a store like this is to go in with a researched concept (Pinterest is a great place to start) and break down the look into your base piece, a statement accessory and modern accents such as makeup and spooky embellishments like fangs, fake blood and even faux weapons. After going through the shop, myself, here are some costume ideas that this shop could definitely help create:

Tippi Hedren as Melanie Daniels in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds

For this costume, you would need a knee length skirt and matching blazer or sweater. Ideal accessories would be a belt and kitten heels, both of which Vintage Vortex has plenty. You could really lean into the 1960’s era by adding tea gloves. Modern pieces to incorporate would be fake birds pinned onto your jacket and fixed into your hair with various splatters of fake blood.

The Bride of Frankenstein

This look requires much less coordination. Any maxi-length gown in white or off-white would do and since you are meant to be a monster, you can even go for the tattered and worn pieces that don’t cost as much as the more preserved pieces. Modern pieces to include would be costume makeup and if you don’t want to invest in a wig, you could just wear your hair down and add two white extensions to each side of your face.

The Marlboro Man

Vintage Vortex has a great selection of western pieces for men. The classic Marlboro Man is an easy costume to complete with a pair of jeans you already own, a western shirt, belt buckle, cowboy hat and boots. Modern accessories to incorporate would be an Indiana Jones-esq whip and a pack of Marlboro smokes (that are just for show, of course).

HOUSE OF STRUT

Located at 20 W. State Street, this hip and stylish boutique stocks stylish apparel originating from the 1930’s to the 1990’s. If you are new to vintage clothing and struggle with styling and the differing size scales depending on era, this shop’s customer service is top notch and offers a really great and easy shopper experience. For a shop like this, the best strategy is to go in without a solid concept and just fall in love with a piece and style from there. A walk through the shop inspired me to create the following costume concepts:

Elvis and Priscilla Presley

One of the great things about this shop is that it is incredibly gender fluid, so don’t feel like you can’t be Elvis if you don’t identify as male. For Elvis, a jumpsuit of any kind and a pair of flashy boots (silver for example) would be a great place to start. Be sure to add some loud rings, of which House of Strut has plenty. You can top it off with a classic Elvis wig, or go natural with a slicked back, hair-down style. For Priscilla, think go-go dancer. A mini skirt, belt, blouse, scarf headband and tall boots would pretty much complete you. Add big hair and a cat-eye and you really take this costume to the next level.

Motorcycle Gang

A great group costume would be a motorcycle gang. Vintage Harley Davidson shirts are super in right now and it would be an investment you could wear any day of the week. Add a pair

of leather (or faux leather) pants, black boots and leather jewelry accessories and you have truly curated a look you could pull apart and wear anytime. Be sure to snag a bunch of fake tattoos (if you are already ink free). Personally, I am a big fan of costumes that include pieces that are not just one and done.

Romy & Michele from Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion

Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion is a cult classic from the late 1990’s. The title characters make a super fun duo costume. No need to limit yourself to cheap replicas of the memorable dresses they made specifically for the reunion, just think in schemes of pink and purple. Romy is pink and Michele is purple and from there, you can just do a highly monochromatic look. Short dresses or mini-skirts and matching high-heels are pretty much all you need. If you really want to be extra, pink and purple feather boas would further scream “kitschy,” which is really the only word you need to explain that pair.

EAST & UP

Located at 6 East Liberty St., just look for the colorful planter made of cowboy boots. This boutique is the vintage partner of Mamie Ruth and Starland Strange. It’s a true gem that offers truly curated pieces. If I had to sum of the style, it would definitely be bohemian. Think 1960’s and

1970’s. Personally, this is my favorite shop in the city and as a regular shopper, these are the looks that come to mind:

The goddess herself, Stevie Nicks

As a true bohemian fashion pioneer, there is so much you could do with this costume. It really is all about excess and layering. Pieces to hunt would include anything with fringe, flowy materials such as chiffon, scarfs worn as headpieces or jewelry, rings with natural stones, long necklaces, chokers, bangles, maxiskirts and dresses and/or bell-bottoms. Extra pieces to really complete your look would vintage, steampunk, low profile, black hat or black top hat, and a tambourine with long ribbons tied to it.

Janis Joplin

Like Stevie, Janis is a bohemian queen and her clothes definitely reflected that spirit in her. You absolutely cannot do a Janis costume without tying feather boas in your hair and dawning a huge pair of sunglasses. From there, you just need a loose, flowy, bohemian styled top and any bottoms with a high-waist. Tops with a relaxed fit, like long-sleeve blouses, are a great place to start. It’s all about breathable, flowy and comfortable clothing featuring bright colors and even ethnic prints.

Concept Costume

I’m a big fan of concept costumes. For example, one year my husband and I were “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and he was a modern Devil and I was a sexy cowgirl. This is a great shop to take on something like “American Woman” and “All You Need Is Love.” Just full on embracing the era in a super fun, over-the-top way will definitely make you stand out from the fast-fashion costumes. While the above three are my three favorite shops to pop into, there are several other honorable mentions that I have found to offer wonderful fodder for conversation. These shops include:

The Future on Forsyth, located at 106 W. Gwinnett St. #1A This shop includes great period pieces and reminds me of walking through the funky streets of Atlanta’s Little Five Points.

Avalon Exchange, located at 20 E. Broughton St. Best place for more modern vintage from the 1980’s to the early 2000’s. Probably one of the most affordable thrift stores in Savannah.

Goodwill

The Savannah area has several Goodwill locations and, in my opinion, thrifting good pieces from here takes some experience because you are going to be doing some serious digging.

Glory Days Vintage, located at 3 E. Broughton St. A newer, hidden gem in downtown, this shop offers a small selection in a back room of a modern-day boutique. Probably a good place to start if you need some 1980’s street fashion for a concept.

I think it is fair to say that it has been a great year in food around here so far. There are a couple more months left for some surprises, but what Savannah has experienced so far has been largely positive. We had a run of closings in the early summer, yes, but the empty spaces that haven’t already been filled are going to be so very quickly. This town, and the food in it, very much remain in high demand. Would you like some proof?

You can point back to early February when travel host Samantha Brown’s show returned to Savannah for an episode of that very popular program. At the same time, almost literally, we heard whispers that America’s favorite “Mayor of Flavortown” Guy Fieri was in the area shooting content for his “Diners, Drive Ins and Dives” franchise. Those episodes aired in the Spring. But that was hardly the end of the national exposure.

In May, I took a phone call from one of the producers of a new food show called "Street Somm" that was going to be making a stop in Savannah. It features host Jermaine Stone traveling America’s largest cities pairing wines with street food. That’s certainly

I was asked if I’d be interested in auditioning to participate as a ‘tour guide’ of sorts. They wanted me to participate in a zoom chat where they wanted to see “caffeinated Jesse.” That was a first. It was also amusing. I got the gig.

By the end of June, they were here. Set up for four days of production in and around Savannah. I had offered some suggestions of what could be a good fit, but they chose their own places to feature. I was along for the ride to fill the host in on what turned out to be his first visit to Savannah. I can tell you Jermaine, and most of the crew for that matter, were fascinated by what they found here. More than once did I hear-on camera and off- “I had no idea.” Or “People talk about Savannah, but I never expected this.”

Our city made a fantastic impression. I am 100 percent certain of that.

Our director was originally from Atlanta, so he was somewhat familiar with the Hostess City, of course. But the rest of the crew ranged from New York, to Los Angeles, Texas, and a whole lot of places in between. They all took rave reviews back with them. Well, except for the fact that we were shooting the last week of June and it was about 175 muggy degrees in the shade. We know that drill, right?

Our stops included Chef Nick Mueller’s compound in Guyton, a

real treat in and of itself. We had stops at The Pirates House and even enjoyed some of Chazito’s Puerto Rican cuisine in the middle of Chippewa Square. We even visited the home of another local chef for a Low Country Boil with neighbors. It was a fairly nice slice of Savannah, if you ask me. All of it paired with wines that Jermaine brought along for the affair. Their final evening in town, Jermaine and I spent about 45 minutes walking the streets of Savannah talking about my experiences here and his impressions after just a few days. I’m eagerly looking forward to how this is going to turn out.

The first season of "Street Somm" is made up of six episodes. They include stops in New York City, San Francisco, Miami, Houston, Chicago, and of course Savannah. The fact that lil’ ol’ Savannah was placed on a list alongside cities with food scenes of that caliber, should tell you all you need to know about what people across America are already thinking of Savannah.

When they left, I was told to expect it to air sometime in November. Apparently, "Street Somm" has been fast tracked. A

couple of weeks ago, I was told that the Series premiere of "Street Somm" was set for September 25. Not only that, but their Executive Producer shared that “They were so happy with the Savannah episode, they moved it up to second, bumping San Francisco down to the third spot.”

I’d like to think that’s not just a good thing, but a great thing. "Street Somm" is going to premiere on the Tastemade Network (Channel 235 on Direct TV) or available by downloading the Tastemade App to your smart TV. Or at Tastemade.com They have a ton of content on there, from recipes to travel food shows.

I’m told after the season runs its course this Fall, they are moving all episodes going forward to either Amazon Prime or Hulu, where they will be available on demand as well

Personally, it was a great joy sharing our city with out of towners. It was especially thrilling to see how much they enjoyed their time here. I owe a quick thank you here to everyone who made their stay comfortable. They told me there were many of you.

Now, we get to sit and wait and look forward to watching and liking. Monday, October 2nd for "Street Somm" in Savannah on the Tastemade Network which will hopefully make for a really nice ending to what has been a pretty fabulous year around here.

OCTOBER’S BUSTLING ART SCENE

It’s Fall in Savannah, and there’s a happy, chaotic plethora of art happenings and art shows! Let’s start by mentioning an important fundraiser for Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity.

I recently visited one of their building sites and was impressed by their partnerships with low-income, working families to realize their dream of owning quality, affordable, energy-efficient homes in safe, revitalizing neighborhoods in Chatham County. Peter Roberts has curated a fabulous show at Location Gallery, 251 Bull Street, and gallery profits benefit this worthy nonprofit. With each artist creating two works, and with each piece measuring just 6” by 8” this is a huge show with lots of variety, offering a perfect opportunity to start your own Savannah art collection at a reasonable price point.

Roberts’ cleverly named show (would we expect anything less?!) is called “Savannopoly” because like the classic Monopoly board game, it highlights iconic properties and locales in our city.

Opening on Friday, October 13 from 6-8pm, it features a who’s-who of local artists: Stacie Jean Albano, Claire Barrett, Adrienne Berkland, Bob Christian, Julia Christian, Lennie Ciliento, Bailey Davidson, Joy Dunigan, Tate Ellington, Maxx Feist, Mary Hartman, Lind Hollingsworth, Ahmad Jackson, Liza Crowley Judson, Tafy LaPlanche, David Laughlin, Julia Licht, Beth Logan, Heather MacRae, Maddie Grace Maierhoffer, Rubi McGrory, Deborah Sheron Miller, Bernard Nolan, Jennifer Nolan, Michelle Perez, Melody Postma, Dana Richardson, Peter E. Jr. at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, 41 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., opening on Wednesday, October 11 at 5:30pm. Morris, the retired Chief Communications Officer for the Georgia Ports Authority, has had three previous exhibitions at this location and numerous other shows across the country.

This new show “Outward Bound is curated by Katherine Sandoz and seeks to fuse his unique work experience with “his new life aboard “Grace,” a Swedish Storebro Royal Cruiser 34.” He says, “I hope this latest body of work takes the viewer into a closer, even more intimate reatlionship with the sea around us than my previous work. I have literally set sail from the safe harbor I once knew into a phantasmagoric world of color, illusion, and metaphor.”

Saturday, October 14 offers not one, but four, not-to-bemissed art events! The Gordonston Art Fair, always a delightful kickoff to fall, is held in the Gordonston neighborhood’s beautiful six-acre Juliette Gordon Low Park at 10 Edgewood Road.

The juried art fair, from 10 to 4:00 pm, features over 50 local and regional artists and artisans and there is live music, food trucks and a children’s hands-on craft area. Proceeds from the sale of large fall chrysanthemums and from a book sale go towards the restoration of the park’s cottage.

Also from 10 to 4:00 pm on the 14th , Savannah Garden Tours, with volunteer assistance from Wymberly and Parkersburg Garden Clubs, presents their 2023 tour of ten special gardens on Isle of Hope.

With food trucks, vendors, and 15-minute talks from garden specialists on such topics as perennials, native plants, exotic orchids, camellias, and wildlife, the tour is self-guided with

golf cart rides available for those who need assistance. Start your day by purchasing a $20 ticket at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on the corner of St. Thomas Avenue and Cornus Drive.

Take a break from exploring Isle of Hope or Gordonston at noon on the 14th to drive out to Laney Contemporary, 1810 Mills B. Lane Blvd. and listen to Michael Scoggins’ artist talk. I wrote about his show “Goose” in my August 28 Art Patrol column, and trust me, you don’t want to miss it!

And finally, on the evening of Saturday, October 14, head over to Cleo the Gallery, at her new home at 915 B Montgomery Street for the opening reception of “Crisp Kitsch” from 6-9pm. Curated by the talented gallerist Jeanette McCune, it explores kitsch ornamentation through the influence of film, dreamscapes, nature, and utility.

Local painter Ben Tollefson, curator at SCAD’s Museum of Fine Art, shows pieces inspired by a scene at the fictional club ‘The Queen of Hearts’ in The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976).

McCune says, “The club features ornaments of queer tropes in midcentury America that have since been reclaimed by the culture. These ornaments include cartoon hearts, neon lighting, the drama of an unopened curtain, and the isolation of body parts. Together they set a stage for characters to inhabit under the careful consideration of Tollefson’s signature attention to capturing slick detail.” Tollefson is joined by 3-D artists Sara French, Theo Skeete, Angelica Lorenzi, and Neal Hollinger.

The following weekend, on Saturday October 23, is one of my favorite art events of the year – the Isle of Hope Art and Music Festival, a free-admission, rain or shine festival benefiting the Isle of Hope Historical Association. Started in 2000 by Bluff residents and artists Noel and his late wife Ruthie Wright, the festival has expanded to 125 artists and makers stationed from the Isle of Hope Marina and Pavilion down Rose Avenue, Bluff Drive and into Paxton Park.

With art sales from 10 – 5:00pm, this event is large, with too many wonderful artists to list by name… there is something for everyone, the day is kid-friendly, and the setting is simply beautiful!

Food trucks are located throughout the festival – they include Strangebird, Okan, Nom Nom Sushi Cart, Starship Ice Cream, Chazito’s Latin Cuisine, Hot Rye, Johnny Boy Cookies, Smashed Savannah, Bayou Café, Down South Cheesesteaks, Red Taco Truck, Pour Boy Mobile Barista, The Burger Boat, and Kona Ice (phew!) The 3rd Infantry Division Band

(known as ‘the best band in the land!”) kicks off the music at the Marina at 10am, and the Eric Jones Trio, Swamptooth, Lyn Avenue, Seth Walker, and Kinchafoonee Cowboys play until 8pm. Music lovers will also be delighted by the inclusion of a new singer/songwriter stage in Paxton Park this year.

Throughout the month of October, view photographs by Bailey Davidson at the JEA Art Gallery, 5111 Abercorn Street. Davidson graduated SCAD with an MFA in 2001 and has expanded his thesis show by choosing a plastic Holga pinhole camera as the consistent theme for this body of work.

With the camera and lens themselves being rudimentary, the results are often unpredictable, imperfect, and distorted. Davidson’s opening reception is Thursday, October 5 from 5-7pm.

And lastly, Friday, October 6, is of course,

October’s First Friday in Starland.

ARTS Southeast’s artist-in-residence Alexandia P. Clay, a charcoal and mixed media collage artist from Durham, NC, will show work completed during her month-long ON::View Residency, while the main gallery features the closing reception of “Paper Cuts: An International Collage Exchange with Axelle Kieffer” that I previously wrote about here. For 12 years, Bay Street Theatre has performed the show, but this year local powerhouse Trey Norris will be its director for the first time. Norris has experience acting in the show and now, is looking forward to bringing some fresh ideas for its thirteenth run.

"I've played Dr. Frank-N-Furter twice, I've been Brad twice, and I've been part of the production for the past seven years, so I'm excited. I'm hoping that everybody that comes out this year will see a fresh take on Rocky," said Norris.

Each year, Bay Street Theatre incorporates a theme that sets the performances apart. This time, it’s glitz and glamor, so be ready to sparkle!

"Everything that you're going to see is going to be shiny. I'm hoping that people are going to be blinded by the time they leave this show," Norris said.

While bringing any props to the show is prohibited, costumes and

signing are highly encouraged.

"People come dressed up immediately when you walk in the door. You have your ‘virgins,’ and you have your ‘sluts.’ Your ‘virgins’ are the people who have never seen the show. Your ‘sluts’ are the people who have seen the show multiple times and, we have a lot of those," said Norris.

For many in Savannah, attending the show is an annual tradition, making Norris’ work of keeping it fresh a little more challenging. Luckily, Norris will have an incredible cast—a mix of veteran performers and new cast members.

"We had a great turnout for auditions. It was very tough to cast this show because we had so much talent show up, but we've got a very diverse cast this year, and I am looking forward to audiences seeing that," said Norris.

With this cast, Norris is hoping to add a special twist to this year’s show. In true Bay Street Theatre fashion, they will not reveal who is playing Dr. Frank-N-Furter until the week before. Stay tuned to see what’s been brewing in Frank’s lab.

Be sure to stay until the very end of the show—audience members can take pictures and interact with the cast.

"Rocky Horror is kind of like home to me. The cast is a great time. It's great to participate every year, seeing the excitement on people's faces and their interaction with the show," said Norris.

The musical direction is by Brandon Kaufman, and the choreography is by Travis Dodd.

NEEDTOBREATHE DIGS DEEPER WITH 'CAVES': A JOURNEY FROM CONFLICT TO CONCERT ARENAS

The past three years have been especially productive for Needtobreathe, considering the band has released three albums in that span, while also leaving quite a few extra songs in the vault.

Keyboardist Josh Lovelace says the wealth of music reflects where Needtobreathe is at after more than 20 years as a band.

“It’s us dealing with our baggage and the things we have in our lives, in our human experiences (as songwriters), but also just being comfortable enough to be vulnerable with the other guys in the band creatively and also just spending time together. We actually enjoy each other’s company,” Lovelace said in an early August phone interview.

“Everybody’s just in a good space where we love

the band, we love making music, but we don’t have to. It doesn’t feel like as much of a job as it has sometimes,” he said. “We’re enjoying it enough to let that fruitfulness come out, which is really cool. We don’t have to do this for a job. We’re very fortunate that we get to, but the drive for success or fame or notoriety, we’re all at a place in our lives where we’ve checked off a lot of boxes.”

The mood in Needtobreathe is especially striking within the big picture of the band’s career. For large chunks of time, conflict existed, specifically between founding members, chief songwriters and brothers Bear (lead singer, guitar, keyboards) and Bo Rinehart (guitar).

Both Rinehart brothers are talented songwriters. And that became a problem within Needtobreathe as the group began making albums, initially making an impact on the Christian rock scene with their first two CDs, “Daylight” (2006) and “Heat” (2007), before breaking through to mainstream rock in 2009 with the band’s third album, “The Outsiders.”

By the time Needtobreathe notched their first

top 10 album on the “Billboard” magazine album chart with the 2011 album “The Reckoning,” the dynamic between Bear and Bo Rinehart had grown toxic. Rather than pushing them to write better songs, the competitive nature of the songwriting was corroding the brothers’ relationship and the dynamic within Needtobreathe as a whole.

The Rineharts eventually agreed their relationship as brothers was more important than bickering over songs and they sought to de-escalate their writing relationship. For a time they succeeded, and Needtobreathe notched two top-5 albums in 2014’s “Rivers in the Wasteland” and 2016’s “Hard Love.” But the issues returned, and in April 2020, Bo Rinehart left Needtobreathe.

Today’s more positive, creativity-driven atmosphere within Needtobreathe, Lovelace said, shouldn’t be mistaken for a lack of motivation or ambition.

Work on “Caves” began when the band convened at a house/studio in Utah to write and do some preproduction and really accelerated last summer as Needtobreathe toured.

“We ended up in that early season in Utah, that was two years ago that we started this thing and had no idea what was going to happen with it,” Lovelace said. “We were like ‘Are these songs for a record or are they going to be for an EP or several releases?’ We had no idea we were starting something as special as ‘Caves.’ We started writing on the road and we were out (touring) last summer and it’s funny how that works as you’re writing and you’re recording. It just kind of comes together in a very organic way. It’s because the people that are creating it are humans going through life and those things kind of blend in with your experiences and create this thing that kind of feels more cohesive than you ever intended it to be, as you’re going through it in a timeline sort of way. I think that’s what happened with this. We just kind of lived life together and it created this beautiful thing that we couldn’t have planned if we’d tried.

Further recording followed at Pachyderm Studios near Minneapolis before Needtobreathe declared “Caves” finished. Now Lovelace and his bandmates are ready to take the new songs -- which range from epic U2-ish “When You Forgive Someone,” to urgent rockers like "By and By,” “Wasting Time” and the title track, to songs like “Dreams” and “Everknown,” which blend measured balladry with spacious rock -- to the live stage.

The band’s new album, “Caves,” is evidence enough of that. Lovelace said that with this album, he and his bandmates hope to elevate Needtobreathe to where they consistently headline arenas and will be able to tour at that level for some time to come.

The current headlining tour actually includes a good number of arena shows, as well some dates in theaters and large clubs. So the band, which also includes bassist Seth Bolt, drummer Randall Harris and guitarist Tyler Burkum, appears to be closing in on that goal. And “Caves” is intentionally meant to translate to the biggest concert stages.

“When we went into the (“Caves”) record cycle, I think we all intentionally said to each other we want to make a record that feels anthemic and feels big,” Lovelace said. “I guess our next dream as a band after 20 years and nine records is we want to be an arena band. We want to play more arenas. We want to do more of those kinds of shows where we can bring in our production, and we can bring in more lights. We love that part of our job, the creative of the live thing. We play arenas now, but we want to add 10 more on the tour and kind of go to the next level.”

The epic pop-rock songs on “Caves” don’t take Needtobreathe into uncharted territory. Several albums in the band’s catalog – including “The Outsiders” and “Reckoning” -- have had this sort of character. But “Caves” represents a contrast – and perhaps a return to form – after a 2022 album, “Into The Mystery,” that scaled back on the Needtobreathe sound.

“‘Into The Mystery,’ was made during the pandemic, when we weren’t able to do much,” Lovelace said. “So we went to a house (in Columbia, Tennessee) and made ‘Into The Mystery’ in about 14 days, recording it. And it sounds like that, a little bit. It’s more of an acoustic-driven record and very stripped back. But when you think of Needtobreathe, or at least a lot of our fans think of some of the bigger records we’ve done like ‘The Reckoning’ or ‘The Outsiders.’ Those records took a lot of time to make. They were big sounding records. It was the band stretching to try to take it one extra notch up or one level up.

“‘Into The Mystery’ was let’s make it as simple as we can, kind of using the tools we had at the moment,” he said. “I think we love painting with all kinds of different colors and palates and so this (“Caves”) is kind of going for it in some ways, throwing the whole

“We’re bringing video walls, and I think we’re doing a B stage on this run, so we’ll be able to get closer to the fans and do some songs kind of stripped down and even songs from very early on in the band’s career,” he said. “There are definitely some fans that have been around from the beginning. So we’ll get to play some of those songs that started our career. I think it’s going to be really fun, whether you’re a long-time fan or a new fan, there’s going to be something for everybody.”

ALADAĞ: Refraction

Nevin Aladağ’s (b. 1972, Van, Turkey) major new site-specific commission for the SCAD Museum of Art includes her largest works to date, expanding on her Social Fabric and Pattern Kinship series. The artist’s Social Fabric works connect disparate pieces of carpet from around the world into complex collages of amalgamated hybrid forms. Her Pattern Kinship works are composed of overlapping laser-cut plexiglass layers, juxtaposing a wide array of architectural motifs and ornamentation styles including various patterns referencing Savannah’s historic buildings. In both series, the artist’s animated use of line, color, and diverse sources reflects a playful exploration of hybridity and belonging as an expression of her experiences as an immigrant. Aladağ’s inclusive, optimistic approach to art-making demonstrates how objects from different cultures and geographical origins can be united to create a collective sense of vibrancy, beauty, and meaning for us all.
