STAFF NOTES
Connecting with locals BY LAUREN WOLVERTON lauren@connectsavannah.com
IF I COULD D ESCRIBE the way I feel coming to work at Connect Savannah every day, I’d only use one word: excited. I’m excited by fun, and this job is fun for obvious reasons. We’re an arts and entertainment publication. What’s not fun about art exhibits, live music and new restaurants? I’m also excited by change. Th is is truly one of those “different every day” kind of jobs. One day I’m writing a story about a local chef or planning a rock concert, and the next I’m helping a new business with an advertising plan or jumping on trampolines for a photo shoot. It’s random in a good way, and it keeps me on my toes. But the thing I’m most excited about every day is meeting new, awesome people in our community. Savannah isn’t the largest city in the country, but I truly
believe it’s one of the brightest and one of the boldest. Every single day I am surrounded by people who are much smarter, much more creative, and much more talented than I am. I get to not only witness them in their groove, but I also get to lift them up and share their ideas with the rest of the City. It’s inspiring and incredibly humbling. The community is what drives our publication, on both the editorial side and the sales side. Without Savannahians in all different fields following their dreams and their passions, we’d have nothing to write about and nothing to advertise. I know Connect Savannah will never run out of marvelous people to partner with. So, thank you artists, business owners, musicians, bartenders, community activists, creators and risk-takers of Savannah. Because of you, I’m excited to get to work every day.

AS OF MIDNIGHT June 1, the Savannah mask mandate has been lifted. Mayor Van Johnson announced that the mask mandate has been changed to a mask advisory and the city can re-open its facilities, effective immediately. “Savannah’s mask mandate which has been in effect for 11 months has expired,” Johnson said. “But it has been downgraded to a mask advisory.” Johnson said the city advises masks and face coverings be worn by those who are unvaccinated, those with compromised immune systems, those in crowded indoor spaces and those under 12-years old. “The decision to do this follows the science,” Johnson said. “While our community transmission rate has plateaued in the high 70s — currently 79 — it is still considered to be a significant
pitalizations are still trimming down, which is a good thing.” Though community transmission of the virus has plateaued, Johnson said Georgia is only 33% fully vaccinated and the city of Savannah’s vaccination rate falls at 32%. “That means two out of every three of us are not vaccinated,” Johnson said. “So, though I’m fully vaccinated, you will continue to see me wearing a mask.” Special event permits are also being issued on a case-by-case basis for events of up to 100 participants. “Right now, we are at 100,” Johnson said. “We will be moving that to 250, and we will start allowing special events, provided social distancing is accounted for.” Johnson said masks will still be required in city buildings until further notice.

PSA: THIS I S “ GIRL TALK,” gentlemen. Affectionately known as “The Yoni Lady,” Cherica Jones is the owner of Yoni Spa Room at 7370 Hodgson Memorial Dr. The Yoni Lady offers natural services and products for the holistic wellbeing of women locally and abroad. One of The Yoni Lady’s primary services are yoni steams which is also called v-steaming. This is a practice in which a woman sits over a pot or bowl of boiled herbs, usually with only a towel covering the lower half of her body, allowing the steam to permeate her “yoni” so she can engage in the benefits of the plant medicine. Yoni streams are respected across the globe and are called by many different names. There are many reasons why women
seek a yoni steams, and when women visit The Yoni Lady, they tell her what they are looking for. “ … basically, we blend herbs depending on what the woman needs,” Jones said. “A traditional steam balances your pH, and women come to try something natural versus [an alternative]. We also have fertility steams, postpartum steams and v-steams for menopause, bad periods and BV.” Jones said she started her business by selling yoni eggs, yoni steams, and yoni washes, while educating girls and women about the amazing products she sold at pop-up shops. The Yoni Lady started her own yoni-healing and -cleansing journey to revitalize herself after a rough time for her physical, mental and spiritual health. At age 26, Jones was diagnosed with fibroids and endometriosis while incarcerated.

carelessly, and since she didn’t gain any weight until she started having health complications, she was unaware of how her diet was impacting her health. “I ate whatever I wanted to eat before that,” she said. “My favorite meal was a triple Whopper with cheese from Burger King, add bacon, bun slightly dipped in grease, king size fry, milkshake and a Hershey chocolate pie on the side. That was my number one meal.” After researching holistic healers, including Queen Afua, Dr. Sebi, and Chef Ahki, Jones began to change her diet. After a month of intentionally changing the way she cared for her body, Jones healed many of her health complications, leaving her doctors shocked at her recovery. Jones said she healed herself, and dreamed shortly after of doing the same for other women all over. She said one day the thought just came to her. “I would love to have a safe space for women to just come, cleanse, detox and unwind, laugh and just have fun,” Jones said. “And, it’s just like a girl’s room and that’s how the idea of the spa came. It was a goal.” The goal is now accomplished, and many women visit The Yoni Lady for their own holistic healing. Visit myyonilady.com for information.

“The only thing they offered me was a bunch of birth control or a hysterectomy,” Jones said. “They gave me birth control on and off and I experienced all the side effects.” Before the diagnosis, Jones was unaware of her medical condition, but she knew something was very wrong. She said when she explained the harsh symptoms she was experiencing, the nurses weren’t taking her seriously. They assumed she was just looking for a way to get out of her dorm and leave the facility. After filing multiple complaints and eventually undergoing various embarrassing processes to prove that her symptoms were as bad as she said they were, Jones was escorted to the hospital for a blood transfusion. After a week of hospitalization, Jones was back in the facility. A week after that, her symptoms were back. This time, she hid them to save herself from any additional discomfort until the end of her sentence. “Once I came home, I considered getting a hysterectomy, but I ran into these ladies in the park, Soul Sisters of Savannah, that did yoga and they were telling me about Queen Afua and changing my diet and things like that,” Jones said. One of the most fundamental steps to holistic health is the diet, Jones said. Before changing her diet, Jones said she ate

Georgia Power encourages customers to prepare for an active hurricane season BY MEREDITH STONE GeorgiaPower.com
THE 2021 ATLANTI C Hurricane Season is here, and Georgia Power encourages its 2.6 million customers to prepare for an expected active Atlantic hurricane season. Forecasters predict a 60% chance of an above-normal season, as the official start of hurricane season began June 1. Georgia Power reminds customers to keep safety in the forefront of their minds during hurricane season, and take time now to ready themselves, their families and their homes. The company has launched a new video series answering some of the questions most often asked by our customers, including: What causes outages during a storm?; What happens after a storm?; When will my lights be back on?; How do you get the lights back on? And What about my food? Georgia Power also offers tips for preparedness year-round: • Build a n e mergency k it – Gather supplies that will last for several days for everyone living in the home. Consider the unique needs each person or pet may have in case the time comes where customers may have to evacuate quickly. Check out Georgia Power’s video at youtube.com/watch?v=AP1VYSj58oM for tips on the supplies to collect to build and maintain a robust emergency kit. • Have a n e mergency p lan – Talk to friends and family about how communicating in an emergency. • Understand r isks – Learn more about threats from potential emergencies around the home and business, such as flooding potential, dangerous trees and likelihood of blocked evacuation routes, and plan appropriate responses to them. • Downed Tree Safety – Downed trees are usually the cause of an outage after a major storm. Never attempt to pull tree limbs off wires. • Generator Safety – Never use generators in an enclosed space or near open windows. They produce dangerous carbon monoxide that can’t be seen or smelled. surge and tropical storm or hurricane strength winds. Georgia Power encourages customers to check the emergency kit, unplug major appliances and charge cell phones in case the storm causes customers to lose power. During a storm, customers should have several ways to receive emergency notifications and weather updates. If a customer’s area is under an evacuation order, they are encouraged to follow safety orders from local officials immediately. After a s torm, customers should never touch any downed or low-hanging wire, including telephone or TV wires that could touch a power line. Georgia Power also warns to never pull tree limbs off power lines or enter areas with debris or downed trees as downed power lines may be buried in wreckage. Additionally, customers are warned to not walk or drive through standing water as it may conceal live wires brought down by the storm. Customers can follow @GeorgiaPower on Twitter and at GeorgiaPower.com/Storm
for storm tips, information about restoration efforts, customer service and more. Additional tools available to customers include the Outage & Storm Center, available at GeorgiaPower.com/Storm. Customers can visit this site to sign up for Outage Alerts, report and check the status of outages, and access useful safety tips and information. St. Joseph’s/Candler hosts luncheon for EMS BY NOELLE WIEHE noelle@connectsavannah.com
THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS at St. Joseph’s/Candler hosted a luncheon June 3 as a way to thank the dedicated Emergency Medical Services members in the Savannah area. “We appreciate what they’ve done, especially over the past year,” said Billy Rawlings, director of Emergency Services for St. Joseph’s/Candler. “Today is about thanking them for their service.” The first responders provide urgent medical assessment, treatment and transportation for our entire community, bringing thousands of patients to the hospital each year, said Rawlings. The COVID-19 pandemic tested that relationship even further and today
the bond is stronger than ever. The classic cookout staples included hamburgers and hot dogs. To-go boxes were prepared for those who couldn’t make it to the luncheon due to heavy call volume, which Chief of EMS at Chatham Emergency Services Bengie Cowart said is something that occurs often. “In fact, this may be the only food our medics get today, and that’s just the nature of our business,” Cowart said. “So, St. Joseph’s/Candler providing these meals today is tremendous.” Rawlings said it was the least the health system could do to show its gratitude for the EMS workers who serve the communities in Chatham, Bryan, Liberty, and Effi ngham counties.

Conquistador lives up to the suggestion of the name. A dominating pile of Zunzi’s roasted chicken sits on a bed of tomato and lettuce in the heart of a fresh French bread loaf. The sandwich may seem simple in construction, but it is anything but simple in flavor. Most regulars choose to have a heaping helping of an array of Zunzi’s sauces — Zunzi’s Dressing, Zunzi’s Sauce, Zunzi’s VEGAN Saucy Dressing, Mustafa Curry, and HOT-AS-****! Sauce. Any combination of the sauces seem to go well together, and Zunzi’s ain’t shy about giving the customer what they want — especially if it’s a sea of sandwich lube. The Oliver’s Lunch is your choice of chicken, smoked sausage, Borewors sausage, salmon, curry chicken salad, Frikkadel VEGAN “Meatballs”, and/or grilled veggies atop a bed of mashed potatoes or rice with your choice of two sides and sauces. Zunzi’s menu isn’t massive, but what it does have, it does right. There really aren’t any misses on the menu, and the food is always consistent. Smith brought that consistency into their cocktail menu as well. Alongside the new building and location, the menu is getting a bit of an improvement also. Smith said, “We will be serving beach beers and frozen drinks, cocktails. Then we will have a specific bar menu with Zunzi’s wings. We will be rolling wings out here, like we have in our Atlanta location.” Having been to the Atlanta location as well, I can attest that the wings are legitimate and not an afterthought of the new bar. And don’t fret, your favorites mentioned above aren’t going anywhere. “Half is Zunzi’s and that is really the
traditional quirky Zunzi’s that we have. Then we have ZunziBar. I have always thought a sister bar concept would work really well with Zunzi’s.” Smith was right. The concept works amazingly well. Zunzi’s already had the culinary bones of a restaurant that would be perfect for a few drinks. The hummus and pita is a classic Zunzi’s snack, as are the ziki spread, avocado spread and curry chicken salad. Now alongside the wings and snacks, patrons are invited to mosey on over to the cocktail menu, and these new cocktails that the bartenders are dishing out look amazing. The Banana Hammock is a frozen drink with a rum base with hints of banana and coconut. The Brain Freeze is another frozen concoction — this time with a vodka base and a watermelon flavor profile. For those who don’t really like the heartiness of a frozen cocktail, Zunzi’s has them covered with their on-the-rocks options. The Longboard is a delicious blend of whiskey, lemon, and blackberries, while the Pineapple Express has vodka, peach puree, lemon, almond milk, simple syrup and pineapple. If you’re catching on to the vibe of the drink menu, that’s how it is designed. All of the drinks encourage an outside, beachy spirit that sometimes gets lost in bars away from the water. Savannah has a lot of restaurants, but so few have a comfortable outside place to sit and relax on a hot day while enjoying a cool drink and some delicious grub. Patrons now have the opportunity to watch the day go by situated underneath the breezy fans and shady sails now installed on the brand-new deck.
CONNECT SAVANNAH | JUNE 9-15, 2021
THE CORNER OF DRAYTON and York streets has been the focus of Low Country sandwich and sausage enthusiasts’ wants and needs for over a decade and a half. Sixteen years ago, Zunzi’s opened its doors in the longstanding walk-up location to serve local Savannahians with the very best in award-winning sandwiches and South African-inspired cuisine. Zunzi’s took its passion for food and people into everything they did, hosting Zunzifest — an open mic-ish music festival in the parking lot of the York St. location — and other neighborhood good times while serving up the classics that you still see on the menu. The spirit of a party and a full stomach could not be more in swing now, as Zunzi’s has opened a new and improved location on Drayton St., only a few short blocks from where it stood for so long. Owner Chris Smith told me, “We have known for 5 years that at some point we were going to have to relocate, and we really wanted to find a location that did Zunzi’s justice since it is a local favorite.” The new location is gorgeous. Located at 236 Drayton St., right across Perry St. from the Perry Lane Hotel, the restaurant leaves the days of sitting atop the hot asphalt or waiting in line on a sweltering sidewalk in the rear view. In the space where Green Fire Pizza used to be now stands a gorgeous, modern take on sandos and cocktails. Smith told me that the team felt the location was underutilized in its former form, so they built a deck. The build out makes the location more inviting and certainly has more room than Zunzi’s old location. Another Savannah restaurateur came to Smith’s aid when he was batting around the idea of an expansion into the 236 Drayton St. location. Trey Wilder of Treylor Park and Hitch local fame was excited to come on board to help with the fun. “If you have been to Treylor Park or Hitch, those two concepts kind of ‘take that and light it up’ and give it a beach feel,” Smith said. “You will have that vibe mixed with a little bit of Zunzi’s.” As always, Zunzi’s will be slinging the same Conquistador and Oliver’s Lunch that everyone knows and loves. For the uninitiated, the

HEAD GAMES – A TRIBUTE TO FOREIGNER @ COACH’S CORNER ANA POPOVIĆ @ VICTORY NORTH
CONNECT SAVANNAH | JUNE 9-15, 2021
Crank up the weekend this Thursday night with a scorching-hot blues rock set f rom the best guitar player to pass through Savannah is a long time. Ana Popović has been at it for 20 years, touring relentlessly and blowing away audiences with her Stratocaster mastery and soulful voice, not to mention her killer band. She’s got the essentially American institution of the blues down so pat, you’d never — ever — believe she was born and raised in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. See hands move like Stevie Ray’s did at this can’t-miss show. THURSDAY, JUNE 10 | 7 PM

ATLIENS @ ELAN
This Atlanta-based, alien-inspired hard trap and bass act is definitely not your average EDM duo. The mysterious, masked ATLiens inject cubic light years of grinding noise and disassociated voices into their beats, which are pelvic-oriented and often tremendous. People seem to dig it, and they’ve collaborated with national acts like Bassnectar and Black Tiger Sex Machine. Resist yelling whatever nonsense you’re prattling on about over it, and get lost in the ear-throbbin’ and head-bobbin’ experience. SATURDAY, JUNE 12 | 9 PM
Tribute and cover bands led the charge when live music resurfaced last fall. Venues like Coach’s Corner and Victory North practically relaunched live music in Savannah with bands like Head Games. These road warriors deserve a lot of credit and your support. Foreigner sold an astounding 80 million records, a very rare achievement. You know and love their hard rockers “Hot Blooded” and “Dirty White Boy” and their pop monsters “Double Vision” and the soaring “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Head Games delivers them and a lot more. SATURDAY, JUNE 12 | 7 PM
BUCKY & BARRY @ TUBBY’S TANK HOUSE
As you ponder a weekend of countless regrets, hopelessly trying to link trace memories, cryptic encounters, and various scrapes and bruises into a coherent narrative in case you’re called upon to defend actions and behavior you’ll never remember, enjoy the uplifting sounds of Savannah’s oldest and sexiest boy band, Bucky and Barry. A mainstay around town for good reason, as this Sunday afternoon soiree at Tubby’s will surely attest. Help fill their Bucket of Love, if only to seek the absolution Savannah forced you to need. LANEY CONTEMPORARY presents an in-person artist talk with Atlanta-based painter Craig Drennen which will also be broadcasted live via Instagram on June 11. “Merchants, Bandits, and Certain Senators” is Drennen’s first solo exhibition at Laney Contemporary and inspired by the Shakespearan play “Timon of Athens.” This exhibition also marks the first time the Merchant works have been shown in public. “Craig’s work is meticulously constructed with hyperrealism and abstraction and layered in concept,” said Director Susan Laney. “His work is phenomenal to see in person and Craig is a witty and astute speaker.”
“’Merchants, Bandits, and Certain Senators’ cycles through the process of self-reflection as a crucial part of the act of painting that can be understood as a non-linear, un-framed, cognitive journey,” released Laney Contemporary. “Merchants, Bandits, and Certain Senators” will be on display at Laney Contemporary through June 26. “The exhibition includes paintings on canvas and paper, a selection of small drawings, sculpture, and a single 35-second video projection entitled ‘Timon of Athens’ which lists Drennen’s versions of Shakespearean characters,” according to Laney Contemporary.
Drennen is a former professor of Painting at SCAD, served as Dean of the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, and currently manages THE END Project Space in Atlanta and teaches at Georgia State University. His past work has been exhibited in many group exhibits such as “Decameron” at New Release Gallery in New York City, and “Depiction, Again” at the Kunstverein Langenhagen in Langenhagen, Germany. His solo exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Georgia, and “Mit Zuckerstange“ at Flyweight Projects in Brooklyn, New York. Drennen is a 2018 Gugennhiem Fellow, his work has been reviewed in Art in America, Artforum, and the New York Times.
“To further extend our reach to out-ofstate followers of Drennen’s work or those physically unable to attend in person we are also offering this event online via Instagram LIVE,” concluded Laney. A cocktail hour will be held from 5-5:50 p.m. on the patio at Laney Contemporary. The artist talk with Craig Drennen begins promptly at 6 p.m. Those who cannot attend in person are encouraged to tune in to Instagram LIVE at 6 p.m. or watch anytime on IGTV. an advocate for Gullah-Geechee culture and traditions. “I work with different communities throughout the Gullah-Geechee Corridor which extends from North Carolina down to Florida,” he said. “I talk, show my artwork, and try to educate people on the culture in Hilton Head, Beaufort, Charleston and Sapelo Island. It’s a big part of my work, but I don’t want to be known only as a Gullah-Geechee artist. I’m a contemporary artist.” “Dreaming Savannah” includes a small dancer series reflecting Gullah-Geechee influences, but most of the pieces in this exhibition are inspired by the concept of Bohemianism. They celebrate nature, Savannah’s eccentricity and his own joyously unrestrained style. “It’s about being carefree and connected with the land and just having that as a lifestyle,” he said. “That Bohemian train of thought goes perfectly with what I’m doing because I just let things go in my paintings. You’ll initially see a lot of paint drips and expressive brush strokes, and when you look deeper into the painting, you’ll start to see some things that are recognizable.” ˜ e opening reception for “Dreaming Savannah” takes place on June 11 from 6-9 p.m. at Cedar House Gallery and is free and open to the public. ˜ e exhibition will be available for viewing daily at the Grand Bohemian Gallery at the Mansion at Forsyth Park from June 10 to July 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or by appointment.

“ I’M A COLOR THEORIST, so I try to combine colors that uplift,” said multimedia artist Amiri Gueka Farris who is best known for his assemblages of brightly colored patterns, textures, and forms. “People say they’re very attracted to my work because of the color palette that I use, and that’s one of my goals as an artist is to uplift the viewer.” His bold, multidimensional works require viewing from different vantage points. From afar, they appear abstract. Move closer, and new forms emerge from within the layers. “Dreaming Savannah” is a special solo exhibition of new work by Farris as part of the Grand Bohemian Gallery’s annual Savannah Series. The series highlights the work of local artists who capture the quality and character of life in this corner of the world. For Farris, this exhibition is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural abundance of our coastal population: “It’s definitely inspired by Savannah with the different melding of cultures – the historic and the new; the creative communities; the new energy and influx of people we see; people from the Savannah College of Art and Design; visitors from around the world and then people who have been here like the Gullah-Geechee community. All of those elements influence the work that I was creating.” Farris has been an artist all his life. Without an art school in West Palm Beach where Farris grew up, his parents enrolled him into an afterschool art program at the Armory Art Center. He would also spend time at the now-closed Quest Theatre where he’d create large-scale works for set designs. Hooked by his passion, he entered competitions, won awards and eventually had his work displayed in the Capitol Building in D.C. This was all before his formal education with SCAD where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration and Master of Fine Arts in Painting. As a professional artist, his work has been shown in galleries and museums across the world, and he teaches art education to all ages including part-time work at universities including SCAD. In addition to his creative pursuits, Farris is

Fans invited to connect with artists behind work
Neighborhood Comics hosts in-resident program
NEIGHBORHOOD COMICS, downtown Savannah’s comic book specialty store, has launched a Comic Artist-in-Residence Program. Designed to demystify the process of making comics, Lee Heidel, owner of Neighborhood Comics thought this would be the perfect opportunity to connect Savannah-area comic book artists with the public. The residency will support one local artist per month by providing a dedicated workspace inside the store so that customers can see firsthand how artists create their work. From storyboards to layouts, customers will have the chance to ask the artist questions and even purchase some of their work. The idea for a residency program came from Savannah’s arts community, Heidel explained. “Savannah has an amazing community of sequential artists,” he said. “A large part of that is due to Savannah College of Art and Design with professors that work in the industry and of course, students just getting started. But, Savannah’s quality of life and cost of living also attract artists of all stripes. We consider our store to be a creator store, in that we celebrate the writers and artists that contribute to the comics, not just the fictional characters on the covers. Having signings and meet-and-greets has always been a part of our DNA. Because we get so many tourists, I’m regularly fielding questions about how comics are made. Having an artist on-site seemed like a no-brainer.” Victor Alpi has been selected as the first artist-in-residence and will be on-site working in the store through the end of this month. The Savannah-based, Miami-born, artist is a SCAD alum where he studied Sequential Art and Painting. Heidel is excited for people to connect with Alpi and his work. “He has a great attitude and is working on some amazing creator-owned projects,” Heidel said. “As I was workshopping the idea with different artists, [Victor] immediately saw the potential and was on board. I can’t wait for Savannah to fall in love with Victor’s art.” The residency comes at a perfect moment in Alpi’s career. In December, he decided to step back from his service industry job so that he could dedicate 100% of his time to his artistic practice. And now his work is gaining momentum. Recently, Alpi released “Introduction to The Humarks,” a collection of sketchbook drawings about Jack Dempsey and Jon Dory, two shark-human characters Alpi has developed over the past decade. for a mystical western script written by the up-and-coming comic writer Julio Fernández titled “Magic Revolver.” “I’m using this time to get into the industry more seriously.” Alpi continued, “I’m doing whatever I can to get my work out there. I’m shy but I want to publish my work.” This is a really exciting and unique opportunity for Alpi. It is a reason for him to get out of the house a little bit and, for him, it feels like he is going to an office. “When I heard Lee talking about the program, I jumped right on it,” Alpi said. “It’s the best comic book shop in town. I’ve never heard of a residency program like this. They really have their ear to the ground supporting local stuff. Plus, if I need to take a break, I can grab something off of the wall. They have a whole western section I can look at.” Heidel intends for the program to have a big impact on the local comic scene. “I hope the program raises the profile of our local comic book creator community,” he said. “Not many places have a ‘scene’ like Savannah. The plan is for the artists to make connections with locals and tourists alike to spread the joy of comics.” Stop by to visit with Alpi and see how his mystical western illustrations are shaping up. While you’re there, take the opportunity to explore the full extent of what this “real-life mom-and-pop comic shop” has to offer. Alpi plans to be at Neighborhood Comics during business hours Wednesday through Friday and at least one weekend day. Call ahead to be sure he’s there. Unstationary kits are helping others to get unstuck

BY JAMIE BURTON jamie@connectsavannah.com
IMAGINE TAKING THREE LARGE aspects of your life and combining them all into a singular product; that’s exactly what Alicja Colon did when she sought to create her craft kits. After years of counseling, working with students, and a full-time job as a paper engineer, Colon founded and created Unstationary. Unstationary is art therapy-inspired
paper-craft kits, Colon said. “... as you are crafting this paper craft, we’re asking you questions or asking you to interact with your craft in a certain way that brings about, hopefully, insight, that can plant seeds,” Colon said. Colon made a craft to be used by both children and adults, focusing on topics such as learning to unpack baggage, affirmation, self-appreciation and more by merging the lessons she has learned and visual analogies used with students. She launched her kits in November 2019.
“The object you’re creating is definitely linked to the topic as a visual analogy,” Colon said. For example, a palm tree - one of the most flexible trees in the world - is constructed when learning about flexibility in circumstances. A robot is built when being taught that you’re uniquely wired - you are made to be very specific to you. “We have a rocket that talks about curiosity and how growth-mindset versus fixed-mindset can unlock our growth and our potential that’s a really good visual analogy of a rocket. It’s not going to go anywhere if it’s not focused on growth,” Colon said. The length of time it takes to complete a kit depends on which one is being worked on. They range from 30 minutes to three hours — shorter kits intended for kids and longer kits intended for teenagers or adults. As you build the structure, questions will appear in blue, inviting you to dive deeper into the topic and your thoughts. “The ones for adults are definitely deeper,” Colon said. “The vintage camper focuses a lot on emotional baggage. It forces them to think about themselves a little bit deeper. Where a kid a. wouldn’t have the stamina to do a 3-hour paper craft kit but b. wouldn’t have the wherewithal to even understand the questions.” Four other women are behind the magic of making Colon’s dreams come to life. Cee, Alicja’s mother, is called the “Grandma gauntlet.” When a new kit is created, all instructions go through Cee. If she can put it together, then the product is a ‘go.’ She also cuts the paper - the most essential part of building the structure. Kat, the youngest member of the crew, helps bring new ideas to the table and also does a lot of the illustrations. Loretta has worked with children professionally with students for nearly 20 years. She helps design the lessons for kids to make sure everything will be comprehensible. Last, but not least, is Lauren; a mental and cognitive occupational therapist for soldiers. Her 13 years of experience helps her to review the questions asked while putting the structure together and refine the actions that people take while they put it together. She’s even started to incorporate the kits into her program with soldiers at Fort Stewart. “Having a therapist who has been in the field for 13 years, you know, come across your kits and then realize ‘oh my goodness, this is amazing - how can I employ this into
my department?,’ that also gives me really positive feedback,’” Colon said. This is one of the many reasons she continues to push forward. “With Unstationary, the money has never been there,” Colon said. “We’re going on two years - the money has never been there. But, I trudge forward because I feel like the purpose, I feel like its mission is incredibly important.” The structures and name of the business go hand-in-hand; both having a deeper, underlying meaning. “The mission is to be able to help people get unstuck, which is the whole thing about Unstationary because it’s kind of a double entendre,” Colon said. “Stationary if spelled with an e would be about paper, but we obviously use the ‘stationary’ that’s meant like standing still. We still wanted to give a nod to that double entendre so we added the ‘un’ on top. So, the whole idea is to get people unstuck. You know, maybe the people who won’t go to counseling but they’re crafty; maybe it will touch them.” Colon would love to see Unstationary become “a beautiful brand of various ways of art therapy.” Recently she said she has seen a new desire and awakening within people, realizing they need to do some introspection. But, at the same time, not necessarily knowing how to do it. Her dreams of where she would like to take the business are continuously growing. She envisions the structures being built with therapists or departments where they help children who are long-term hospital patients; maybe even with foster parents allowing them to be introduced to their new child. “We really want seeds planted but we really want those seeds planted deeply,” Colon said. With every kit created, the team tries to incorporate the “what now?” What happens after the structure is built? They want the answers found throughout the process to go far beyond those minutes or hours spent building it. The constructor is challenged to apply the lessons into everyday life; put the structure in sight to be reminded of the experience and thoughts provoked. On top of creating new kits and working on a new book, Colon has also submitted the business to the TV show “Sharktank.” To learn more about the kits visit unstationary.store. You can also follow them on Facebook and Instagram @ unstationarystore.

The Artist Talk for Cora Morris’ “What Lies Beneath” takes place on June 12 at 1 p.m. Cora Morris said her series, ‘What Lies Beneath’ came to fruition after seeing the 2017 documentary “Chasing Coral” directed by Jeff Orlowski. It was alarming and
disturbing to see the declining state of our coral reefs around the globe, and as an avid snorkeler, she walked out of the film and asked “what can I do?” After some careful thought, she decided to make art as a way to bring attention to the troubling problem that many are unaware of. The show displays a sumptuous array of paintings by Polish artist Paulina Olowska, highlighting her storied exploration into female archetypes. Olowska immerses herself within the world of womanhood via her mastery of appropriation and homage, creating paintings that draw out the psychosexual and sociopolitical constructs of the female experience. Her rapid brushstrokes render naïve photorealist forms that are redolent with the feeling of bygone eras, as her colors appear softened by the passage of time. Every 7 days. scadmoa.org

SAVANNAH QUILTERS are keeping the traditions alive. The King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation’s Beach Institute and The African Diaspora Museology Institute partner to present “Quilting for a Better World: The Artistry of African American Handmade Quilts.” “Quilting to Change the World” is currently on display until Aug. 29 after opening in May. Due to the realities of COVID-19, there was no opening reception, organizers said. The exhibition curator, Tina Hicks, said the exhibition was cultivated in celebration of the women and men in the community who make the world safe, warm, and beautiful with their artistry.
Hicks said the exhibition is informed by a quote by the daughter of two civil rights leaders, Virginia Jackson Kiah’s: “Everybody can’t be fine arts artists, but they can learn the art of good taste, the art of improving their appearances and surroundings whether at home, school, church, community, resulting in a more lasting happiness, beauty and a better world.” This exhibit features quilts from the collection of Willis Hakim Jones, quilts crafted by Gullah Geechee artists in the 1930s, quilts inherited from grandmothers, as well as the quilts of some first-time quilt makers who made their pieces at local community centers that help keep quilting traditions robust, organizers shared. Hicks, a quilter herself, brought together the quilts and quilt stories of 10 makers who are the epitome of “better world” artists.
“Quilts are so warm,” Brown said. “They’re made to be used, and as gifts.” Because Hicks works for the city of Savannah as a recreational leader for the senior services’ Golden Age Program, she said that it was simple for her to find the diverse selection of quilts from community members. “There are a lot of quilters in Savannah,” Hicks said. “They are church members, in senior programs and there are many more quilters. All of these ladies I met from working at the senior center. That’s why I know where [quilts] are hiding.” Quilts are functional in more ways than one. Some quilts were used as tools in the Underground Railroad. Hicks spoke about a portion of the exhibition called “Freedom Trail” where some quilts display “quilt codes” that carried messages. The quilts would be hanging outside of
log cabins as if they were only there to dry, but they would have a meaning. Hicks mentioned a quilt called “Monkey Wrench” by Rebecca Johnson and the meaning of such a pattern. “Some quilts had messages during the underground railroad meaning, ‘get ready.’ When they see that quilt it means get ready because something is about to happen,” Hicks said. “The quilts would be something normal.” Other quilts were made for families to bond and to pass down through generations. The many quilters of the exhibition told the stories of their handmade masterpieces and their traditions as they shared their quilts with Hicks. “They are very proud of their work and they want to show it off,” Hicks said. “And I want them to show them off.”
COMMUNITY
FOR MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS I’m COVID vaccinated. According to Hicks, Catherine Sullivan, mother of Ruth Brown, made hundreds of tiny patches to assemble the yo-yo quilt when she was attending Pooler Senior Center. “She would tell me a story about how her father would build a quilting frame and in the garage in the car port and they would quilt all day until finish,” Hicks said. “And she would tell me about how her mother would sit on the porch and quilt.” On another wall there are story quilts that tell stories that are dear to the curator. Hicks said she helped make some of those quilts herself. One of those quilts was made by her older brother, Kevin Hicks, who she said she is exceptionally proud of. The quilt called “Noonie’s Quilt” is displayed with a letter by brother Hicks saying that he used to skip out on school some days, and his mother would tell him that she needs him to cut out some squares for her and she would tell him to keep cutting until she told him he could stop. The letter says, “Each time I didn’t go to school I was cutting squares. After bags and bags of squares she said it was time for part two which was sewing them together. My mother sewed the first one and I sewed the rest into what you see today.” Her brother said that though the times would frustrate him, today he sees the life lesson in it all. “Community, family,” Brown said. “That was what it was all about.” Visitbeachinstitute.org/ for more information about the quilt exhibition.
