CAT calls

by Jim Morekis | jim@connectsavannah.com

I like buses. I like trains. I like subways. I like public transit of all kinds. Anyone who’s spent time in large cities, here or overseas, quickly learns the value of a public transit system, whether it’s the efficiency of New York City’s MTA, the user-friendliness of Bay Area Rapid Transit, or even the bargain value of Atlanta’s MARTA. A good public transit system is the hallmark of a well-functioning, vibrant city. But… it’s expensive. That’s why not everybody does it, or does it well. In places like Savannah, without the critical mass of both size and funding to justify much effort in that area, public transit tends to be less about getting cars off the road and more about social justice. In other words, not everyone can afford a car, but they still need to get to work. So they can serve your lunch, clean your hotel room, bus your table. You know, the things you don’t want to do because they don’t pay enough — in many cases not enough to afford a vehicle or the gas to put in it. Here, Chatham Area Transit buses rarely run at full capacity. Typically CAT buses do the job not of moving large numbers efficiently in a congested city with little parking — the case with public transit in big metro areas — but in getting those who have no other means of transport from point A to point B. CAT’s essentially humble and humanitarian mission, then, would seem compromised by the CAT board’s recent vote to secure a large pay package for new CAT Executive Director Chad Reese. How large? Call it about $240,000 a year in salary and benefits. (The governor of Georgia gets about $140,000 a year.) I’m sure Mr. Reese is a nice man who’s very good at what he does. But something about the pay doesn’t pass the smell test, especially when you consider the median salary of the typical CAT rider.

We all want the best for Savannah, and we all want to attract the best professionals to town. We all like to think Savannah deserves the best of the best. But the best of the best costs money. How much is too much? “Maybe it’s just the case that CAT, Chatham County, the City of Savannah, and the Board of Education simply can’t afford the best in the nation anymore,” says Chatham County Commissioner Tony Center, who in a Commission meeting last week strenuously objected to the way CAT dealt with Mr. Reese’s pay package. “I don’t fly first class, but I still get to where I’m going. I’d like to eat out every night, but I have to cut back,” Center says. “One of the most difficult things to learn is how to cut back.” Center counts himself as a friend of public transit; he just won “Best Liberal” in our annual Best of Savannah Readers Poll. But he says he’s miffed that the revelation of Reese’s compensation came mere days after the County Commission was asked to extend CAT’s line of credit, ostensibly to meet cash flow obligations. “I got the same feeling I got when the federal government bailed out the banks, and the first thing the banks did was give themselves big bonuses,” he says. “CAT essentially asked us for a bailout, all the time knowing they were about to come to us and tell us about a big raise for the director. It makes me feel foolish, upset, and unhappy. The public wants transparency and openness.”

CAT Board Chairman Pete Liakakis — himself a former Chatham County Commission Chairman — was called back before the Commission so he could be questioned about the pay package. Center recalls: “I told Pete, when I was on that side of the table, a member of the public, I was irate when stuff like this happened. I told him I’m not going to change just because I’m on this side now. I wanted to express my displeasure publicly, and send the message that what we give we can take away.” As Center explains it, when the County is forced to extend a line of credit, it is quite possibly committing to a tax increase in the future to cover the extension. He says any future CAT tax hike should come with a provision that “every tax dollar raised goes to pay off that debt,” and not to fund operating expenses or large pay packages for top personnel. “Now I’m hearing that the school board wants to raise taxes. The City is talking about raising taxes. Garden City is about to have their first-ever property tax. When does it stop?” he asks. It stops, of course, when we’ve had enough, when the tipping point has been reached, when it’s clear that CAT — no matter how essential its mission — is simply costing too much money for what it does, too much money for its volume of ridership. “Then we’re going to have to tell CAT, ‘if you can’t operate on your own we’re going to find a different concept,’” Center says. “I think most of the public says, ‘we’ll support public transit, but only to this extent.’ So let’s find out what that extent is.” I’m usually strongly against running public agencies like for-profit businesses. Shareholders know they’re taking a risk with their investments, but citizens invest in themselves, for human capital, and rightly expect as risk-free an investment as possible. But in some cases, such as this one, you have to conclude that, as Center says, it really is too easy to spend other people’s money. cs

Take me to the river, float me in the water

I’m not just talking about the runof-the-mill, it’s-hot-as-Hades-let’s-goto-the-beach kind of moments, which will obviously be taking place every single sizzly minute starting now until October. I mean at 11:49 a.m. on New Year’s Day, when you’re faceflat on the floor and the sound of dustbunnies quivering in the line of your ragged breath is enough to crush your skull and the people that love you drag your sorry hungover self to the pier for the Polar Plunge, where even though you want to smack all the smiling idiots in their tutus and Spiderman outfits, you allow yourself be swept into the frigid sea and be reminded that this year is, in fact, going to be the best one ever. Then there is that Friday afternoon every spring in mid-May, when it becomes socially acceptable — nay, publically sanctioned — to shoot strangers in the schnozzola with a hydrobolic water launcher. I must admit, for a long time I thought the Tybee Island Beach Bum Parade was an immature and bourgeois

pantomime of unchecked redneck aggression. But after many years of sulking in a plastic poncho as grandmas screamed with glee as they unleashed 30-foot streams of water to souse their favorite children, I realized that immersing oneself in a little immaturity is the secret of eternal youth. Now my entire family, armed with double-barreled Stream Machines, barricades a section of Butler Avenue and defends it like those strapping young French revolutionaries in Les Miserables. (A pox on all of you with the ice buckets! You hear me, Mark Fulkerson? We are coming for you next year!) But full-on saturation doesn’t have to hold drama or pain to be special. It is possible to get wet on Tybee and have the experience be as gentle and kind as floating down the Back River. Settle in on your inner tube, paddleboard or kickass pontoon made of recycled plastic water bottles: This Sunday, June 2 starts the season of Tybee Floatilla, a series of homegrown fundraisers that involve nothing icier than what’s bobbing next to Inc

There are times when I am so happy to get wet on Tybee Island that I could eat a spoonful of sand.

you in the cooler. Starting just before dead low tide, these buoyant parties of several hundred drop in at the end of the dirt track known as Alley 3 and follow the current out to a secret sandbar, pristine and wholesome in every way save its name: Criminal Island. (As far as I can tell there are no actual criminals present, unless we are counting violations of good taste. I’m not saying that wearing a neon thong past the age of 50 warrants jail time, but dear Lord, there should at least be a fine.) After a bit of fun and frolic, the

water pushes everyone off again to the Crab Shack, where there will be hopefully many congratulatory fist bumps on how everyone put on enough sunscreen. The whole trip takes four hours and costs $30 — for your cash you get a wristband, a snazzy coozie for your favorite beverage, a sweet limited edition t-shirt and the satisfaction that while you’ve been lolling around in an old tire you’ve just filled the coffers of Savannah’s best local charities. Since Floatilla’s inception in 2011, organizer Brian Stafford has raised over $38,000 for dozens of good works brigades like the Second Harvest Food Bank, Surfers for Autism and the Tybee Historical Society. He hopes to garner almost that much with this summer’s seven Floatillas by bringing in sponsors like Mermaid Cottages and Savannah Slow Ride, an endeavor that has upped the workload of a growing event that began as a lazy cruise between friends. A former lifeguard and Savannah firefighter, Stafford has hung up his firefighting gear since last summer to concentrate on planning events full time, including the intriguing “5K

Scenes from Floatillas past — don’t forget the sunscreen this year, bro!

On that fateful Sunday, Schuman had been good-naturedly rescuing wayward folks throughout the afternoon. He was driving his beloved boat around sunset when a couple of neighbors saw him fall in the water. Paramedics could not resuscitate him, and Tybee Island was forced to unexpectedly mourn the loss of one of its most passionate and gracious citizens. A longtime friend of the family, Stafford shakes off the sadness with

a definitive nod. Frank passed with a big splash, after all. “It was the way he would have wanted to go.” A reminder that the current of life takes us in so many different directions. Blessed are those among us who do what they love and help others along the way. It seems right then to distinguish any of the aqueous Floatillas as a literal and figurative cruise towards a more mellow and generous world. But so help me, if you’re thinking it will be funny to dump that cooler full of ice anywhere near my head, I’ve got a hyberbolic payload with your name on it. cs

Sunday’s Floatilla is set to honor Frank Schuman, Sr., the adored Tybee City Council member and allaround water lover who suffered a fatal heart attack last September, right after the last Floatilla of the season. Monies raised will benefit Schuman’s favorite charities: Coastal Pet Rescue, the Tybee Beautification Association and the Tybee Marine Center. “Everyone knew Frank. If you strayed off from the other floaters, he’d come get you on his jet ski and pull you back in with everyone else,” Stafford sighs, dropping his head for a moment.

Bicycles make Savannah best Bicycles make Savannah better. That’s the Savannah Bicycle Campaign’s slogan. What does it mean? It’s a concise way of getting at the fact that increased bicycle use can help solve some of our community’s pressing problems. When people travel by bike instead of car we realize benefits in the form of improved public health and public safety, and an energized local economy. Bicycling reduces traffic congestion, demand for parking, wear and tear on infrastructure, and dependence on foreign oil (and dependence on domestic fossil fuels). When people of all ages can safely get around by bike, we’ll free young people and senior citizens alike from dependence on others for rides. When we have a network of bicycle friendly streets to help people get to jobs and other destinations, they can choose to forgo the financial burden of car ownership. Increased bicycle use can do all these things. It can also help you win a Connect Savannah Best of Savannah Award. Take City of Savannah Chief of Management Services Bureau Sean Brandon, this year’s selection of Best City Employee. Brandon won the Savannah Bicycle Campaign’s Pedal

Medal Award in 2012 for his pioneering efforts to make Savannah more bicycle friendly (Jim Morekis, editor in chief of this publication, received the award this year). Not only does he demonstrate the viability of bicycling by riding pretty much everywhere, Brandon also spearheaded the most significant expansions of our bike lane network in decades during his time in the Mobility and Parking Services Dept. Speaking of parking, once you reach your destination you’re more likely to find a place to park your bike thanks to an initiative launched by Brandon. Looking at the list of Best of Savannah winners and runners-up, I notice plenty that offer convenient bike parking in prominent locations, not hidden on the periphery. The Sentient Bean, Green Truck Pub, Brighter Day Natural Foods, Half Moon Outfitters, The Jepson Center, Foxy Loxy, Al Salaam Deli, Blick Art Materials — their customers can park their bikes right outside the

front doors. Some of the restaurants on this year’s Best of List, including the Bean and Jimmy John’s, even deliver by bike. Of course, Best Pizzeria and Best Pizza Delivery winner Vinnie Van Go-Go’s has been delivering by bicycle forever. Delivering people via peoplepowered vehicles is the specialty of Savannah Pedicab. Think about it. Savannah’s Best Taxi Service operates a fleet of bicycles. That should tell you something. It’s no surprise that so many successful and popular businesses have made bicycling part of their business plans. Encouraging employees to ride to their jobs or ride bikes as part of their jobs has helped companies across the country control healthcare costs and boost productivity. One company, Minnesota-based Quality Bike Products, saw a 4.4 percent decline in healthcare costs from 2009-2011, thanks to several measures including a Bike to Work Program. Average health care costs for American companies rose nearly 25 percent during the same time period. Considering the needs of customers who arrive by bike has also paid off for businesses that make the effort to welcome bicyclists. The economic

impact of people who ride their bikes to shopping, dining and entertainment destinations is so important that many communities are developing Bicycle Friendly Business Districts in which bicycling is at the center of the district’s events and marketing. A November 2012 study by the New York Department of Transportation revealed a 49 percent increase in retails sales for businesses after protected bike lanes were installed on 8th and 9th avenues in Manhattan. The area also saw declines in injuries. Bicycles are clearly good for business and good for people. At the groundbreaking for Jamestown Properties’ One West Victory development on May 23, bicycles were mentioned numerous times. The 124,000-square foot infill redevelopment project will include 114 apartments and “transform two late-19th century buildings into a thriving restaurant location with a rooftop space.” It’s billed as a bike-friendly community. Scheduled for completion next summer, I expect One West Victory will be a contender for Best Apartment Community in future Best of Savannah competitions. cs John Bennett is executive director of the savannah bicycle campaign.

The columns I find interesting are the ones about secret societies: the Illuminati, the Bilderbergs, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commission, the Masons, etc. I’m not sure whether I should beat ‘em, join ‘em, or continue to relegate them to the land of paranoid delusions. Give me the Straight Dope? — John La Duke I could tell you about the more insidious secretive societies that hide in plain sight. These organizations are far more dangerous than a bunch of balding exfrat brothers sitting around naked in the woods plotting world domination. Let’s start with the many secretive entities on the federal payroll, perhaps the most infamous being the National Security Agency. Every day NSA robosnoops intercept at least 1.7 billion emails, phone calls, and other electronic communications, looking for . . . e don’t know exactly, because no one is talking. We also don’t know the size of the NSA’s budget; its share of the $53 billion U.S. intelligence kitty is classified. But evidently they get a good chunk. In October a heavily fortified NSA data center costing $1.5 billion will go into operation in Utah. Projected to consume $40 million in electricity per year, this installation has enough capacity to store hundreds of times the amount of data created in all history. The idea is to protect us against terrorism. But who can say when some bureaucrat may take it into their heads to investigate the Tea Party, the Socialist Workers, or you? Closely linked to the NSA is the vast anti-terrorism and homeland security apparatus erected after 9/11. A 2010 Washington Post investigation found 1,271 government organizations and 1,931 private companies were toiling away at various domestic security initiatives. Thirty-three buildings totaling 17 million square feet had been constructed in the D.C. area to house all those worker bees. What are they up to? Even the people at the top of the intelligence

food chain don’t really know. Another secretive agency is the Federal Reserve. The Fed’s deliberations are closed to the public, and its bylaws and codes of ethics are also secret. The idea is to prevent politics, but stuff happens. A recent General Accounting Office report noted that a New York Fed director had bought Goldman Sachs stock while the firm was receiving $12.9 billion via a bailout the Fed had engineered. Finally, the most insidious secretive society of all—lobbyists. They don’t work for the government; typically they’re former government employees who put their insiders’ contacts and knowledge at the service of whatever private interest is willing to pay their steep rates. How steep? For a crude idea, divide the estimated $3.3 billion 2012 lobbying tab by the 12,400 known lobbyists, for an average of $266,000 per lobbyist. Acquiring votes ain’t cheap. Who pays that kind of money? The National Rifle Association at $3 million is a piker compared to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, number one at $136 million. The rest of the top five might seem noncontroversial—the National Association of Realtors, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, General Electric, and the American Hospital Association. But think: what businesses are these people in? An enduring belief among progressives, clung to more fervently than ever in the age of WikiLeaks, is that greater transparency = better world. This is inarguably true of information. But transparency of decision-making is something else. In a TED talk from February, Harvard professor and political activist Larry Lessig observes that U.S. elections are a two-stage process: in stage one, the people with big bucks decide who the rest of us will get to vote for in stage two, namely the elections. In the manner of all TED lecturers, Lessig offers no useful guidance on how this process might be reformed, and at a fundamental level it can’t be. We live in a world of infinite possibilities; the body politic is equipped to choose among two or three. Reducing the pile from the former state to the latter is inevitably accomplished behind closed doors by a jostling mess of lobbyists, moneyed interests, bureaucrats, politicians of varying intelligence, integrity, and guts. I’ve participated in this shadowy process myself. Occasionally afterward I go to the public meeting at which the matter is nominally decided, and I think: most of the people in this room have no clue. cs

Blotter All cases from recent Savannah/ Chatham Police Dept. incident reports

Forsyth Park drama In an undercover sting operation involving dozens of police vehicles, two escapees from a Savannah Transition center and another man were arrested Tuesday night after robbing a man in Forsyth Park.

Devante Tyrell Bynes, 20, and Devon Manuel Tarver, 22, were arrested after a foot chase with officers and a Canine Unit. Both men and K9 Flash were transported for treatment of injuries received in the arrest. Also arrested was Josephewa Sonny Ramsey, 28, of the 500 block of Collingwood Drive, who was apprehended by the undercover detective who observed the robbery. Bynes was charged with armed robbery, injury of a police animal, obstruction and escape. Tarver was

charged with armed robbery, possession of a controlled substance (felony), possession of marijuana under an ounce (misdemeanor), obstruction and escape. Ramsey was charged with armed robbery and obstruction. Officers from the SCMPD Robbery Unit, Downtown Precinct detectives and Crime Suppression Units were in the park just before midnight when the three men were observed robbing a 40-year-old Savannah man by the robbery detective. The detective followed the men on foot in an unmarked car until the suspects began to run after they saw the detective observing them surround an unidentified male on a skate board. The detective took Ramsey into custody immediately at Habersham and Hall streets. K9 Flash and his partner caught up with the others on East Bolton Street where Flash apprehended Tarver hiding on the front porch of a house and was apprehending Bynes under a house two doors away when both the suspect and canine were injured. Flash has been treated and is recuperating.

The three men also have been identified by a 21-year-old Savannah man who called police to report he had been robbed 30 minutes earlier near the park. A cell phone reported taken in that robbery was recovered from the possession of one of the suspects. Investigations are continuing into both robberies and other incidents reported in the area. Bynes was serving a three-year sentence for burglary in Chatham County in July 2012 when he escaped from the Coastal Transition Center last week. Other convictions are for theft by receiving stolen property, motor vehicle theft, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and theft by taking. Tarver was serving a 14-year sentence for robbery in Liberty County in 2009. Other convictions include two counts of burglary and an offense in Richmond County

• A Crimestoppers tip and the tenacity of detectives led to the arrest of suspects in two homicides. Brandon Mackey, 26, was taken into custody in Watauga, TX, by SavannahChatham detectives and Fort Worth police and charged with the murder of Wesley Franklin. Franklin, 21, was shot to death June 2 at 2 a.m. by a gunman who fired at the wall of Deb’s Pub and Grub. Franklin was standing at the bar inside, unaware of the robbery outside. Darrell Hendrix, 19, was charged with the April 25 murder of Rodrick Richardson, 38, who was driving to his job at Durst Baking Co. about midnight April 25. The investigation indicates Hendrix approached Richardson at an intersection and eventually shot him. cs Give anonymous crime tips to Crimestoppers at 234-2020

news of the weird Recurring Themes • Creative Smuggling: Abdullah Riyaz, 50, was arrested at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, India, in April after he appeared to be uncomfortable sitting in the waiting area. Officials found four “biscuits” of solid gold in his socks but obviously thought there might be more, and after nature took its course, found Riyaz to be one of those rare humans with the ability to brag that he once excreted gold (eight more “biscuits”). • A report circulated in April that an apparently Orthodox Jewish man (likely a “Kohen”) had tied himself up, head to toe, in a plastic bag while seated on an airline flight -- likely because his teachings told him that flying over a cemetery would yield “impurities.” News of the Weird mentioned a similar report in 2001. Airlines have made accommodations in the past, even in the face of criticism that a man in a plastic bag is a safety hazard. (Exceptions to the Kohen belief: Accidental tears in the bag are excused, but pre-punched air holes not; Kohenim unaware of the cemetery overflight in advance do not need protection; and deceased family members yield no impurities.) • Accountability: The chairman of the National Showcaves Center in a Welsh national park, aiming to halt a recent downturn in tourism business, threatened in April to sue the U.K. National Weather Service for its “all too (frequent) ... gloom and doom reports.”

Updates • News of the Weird first learned of kopi luwak in 1993 -- coffee beans sold as gourmet because they had been swallowed by certain Asian civet cats and recovered from feces and washed. Since then, as Internet news of kopi luwak has spread, it has become no longer obscure, and in April, the environmental-activist website MongaBay. com warned that, based on increased demand, civet “farms” had sprung up in Indonesia and that civets were being caged for their entire lives solely for access to their poop. While none of the main kopi luwak civet species is formally “endangered,” activists warned that populations are dwindling for, said one, “the most ridiculous threat ... to any wildlife I have seen yet.” • In one of the more prominent recent “that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it” cases, Vicky Pryce, 60, finally gave up in March and admitted to a judge that her husband, not she, was driving their speeding car in 2003. She was married at the time to high-ranking British government official Chris Huhne, whose license would have been suspended had he been driving -- and thus, she volunteered. The couple’s 10-year ruse had inspired two trials ending without decision. cs By chuck shepherd UNIVERSAL PRESS SYNDICATE

The Silver Machine, ready to run again All hail the Silver Machine. Calling itself “a mytho-futurist-intergalacticohm-rock group,” the all-woman band doesn’t appear out often; therefore each performance is an event. They’re holding a celebratory “musical ceremony” June 1 at 14 E. Broughton St., the old Primary Art Supply. The Machine includes Tracy Cox-Stanton, whom I knew back in Gainesville, Florida many years ago as a member of a somewhat bizarre performance art/music collective called the Causey Way (with her husband, Scott “Panhandle Slim” Stanton). She started this new Savannah project late in 2012. “The Causey Way and Silver Machine parallels didn’t really occur to me at the time,” Cox-Stanton says, “but I recognize now that the connection is pretty clear ... I guess you can take the woman out of the cult, but you can’t take the cult out of the woman! “But the two bands are very different as well — the Silver Machine is matriarchal, non-hierarchical, shamanistic in its lineage, whereas the Causey Way was much more shameanistic (!) and televangelist-inspired.” The tribal bottom of this dreamlike silver aggregate is Primary Art’s beloved co-owner Robyn Reeder. “If the Silver Machine has a center or focal point, it is Robyn and her drums,” Cox-Stanton says. (The other members are Danielle Rose, Laura Easterling and Sheila Edwards; instrumentation is guitar, organ, drums and theremin.) “The Silver Machine,” Rose tells me, “has been a huge part of my personal and spiritual growth. The connection to the larger picture is something we want to share with our audience as well.

The Silver Machine: “Matriarchal, non-hierarchial and shamanistic.”

“In addition to playing guitar, theremin, accordion and percussion at this show, I will be administering a Communion ritual to the audience.” The Saturday event will also feature art from Panhandle Slim, Zteven Zangbang, Tim Kerr, and furniture from the SCAD furniture department. The Causey Way was associated with Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra and his indie record label, Alternative Tentacles. According to Cox-Stanton, Biafra is interested in the Silver Machine and has convinced the ladies to make a record for the label. It’s at 7 p.m., and admission is free.

Live & local on River Street

Kudos to the Savannah Riverfront Association for recognizing, in this year of our lord 2013, the viability (and niceness) of hiring local musicians to play for their downtown events. It has not always been thus, as many a complaining player can tell you, but starting with the recent St. Paddy’s Day weekend, things have

been turning happily around. This weekend, May 31-June 1, it’s the Blues, Jazz & BBQ Festival on River Street. Come for the ribs, stay for the music — because there’s some really good local stuff on the marquee. Here’s the lineup for Friday (3:3010 p.m.): Georgia Kyle & the Magical Flying Machine; The Hitman; Betsy Kingston & the Crowns. Event hours are noon until 11 p.m. Saturday (1-10 p.m.): Eric Culberson Band; Bottles & Cans; Those Cats; Jacey Faulk. Event hours are 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. Sunday (1-4 p.m.): Jeff Beasley Band; Velvet Caravan. Event hours are 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. And hot rodders will want to check out the Island Car Enthusiasts Car Club show, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Yessir, it’s all family-friendly. Admission is free, although there’s a charge for your food and bev.

This week in the clubs

@ On Thursday, May 30, “Paws For a Cause” happens at the Sentient Bean. It’s a music, art and dance

benefit for homeless animals in the lowcountry, organized by the tireless, talented and sublimely beautiful Nicole Edge — she’s the drummer for Dinosaur Tea Party (formerly Free Candy), and a belly dancer, and a fulltime boutique soap-maker. Nicole (with Gigi and Raluca) will do their Mideastern dance thing, Wendy Denney will perform modern dance, and there’ll be sets from singer/songwriters Greg Rettig (Nicole’s husband) and Basik Lee (winner for Best DJ 2013 in Connect’s readers’ poll). More stuff is promised. See the event’s Facebook page. @ Savannah’s PAC (Performing Arts Collective) brings it all downtown May 31 for its season-ending variety show, at 8 p.m. at Muse Arts Warehouse. PAC, of course, is a collaborative made up of the Eastside Players, Spitfire Poetry Group, and Abeni Cultural Arts. The Friday program ($5 admission) includes singing, dancing, comedy, spoken word and more. @ Indeed, the standup comedy scene in Savannah exists and gets stronger with each passing week. Phil Keeling and Wrath Nasty — two of the best and brightest — perform at the Wormhole Friday, May 31, with the proceeds going to the American Red Cross to aid victims of last week’s tornado devastation in Oklahoma. Admission is $10. The next night (June 1) is the Wormhole’s monthly “Comedy Planet” show, this one featuring Spencer Dobson and Brian Thomas. Conquistadork Keeling is the emcee. @ At Dollhouse Productions June 3 (Monday) A Savannah Metal-Punx show with Teenage Bottlerocket, Crazy Bag Lady, Dinosaur Tea Party and still others TBA. His band’s namesake flew the coop years ago, but saxophonist Karl Denson has kept the Greyboy Allstars alive and flourishing.

The funk, R&B and jazz band headlines SCAD’s “New Alumni Concert” May 31 in Forsyth Park, preceded by a reputation as one of the finest — and funkiest — improvisational instrumental combos in our great green land. The San Diego-based Denson maintains a busy day planner. Along with the Greyboy Allstars, he plays with the reggae band Slightly Stoopid, and fronts Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, which has a pronounced, idiosyncratic jazz edge. “Tiny Universe is more my thing, even though we’ve started to share duties in the last couple of years,” he reports. “But I think the shared responsibility is the big thing with this band. With this band, it’s a democracy. It leads to, I think, a narrower sound in that everybody has a consensus as to what we are trying to do.” Denson and the spotlight first became acquainted in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, when Lenny Kravitz brought him aboard to play sax during his million-selling Let Love Rule/Mama Said period. “I definitely consider myself a jazz guy at heart,” Denson says. “I always knew I had kind of a pop sensibility, so having the Lenny Kravitz gig was that. But when I got my first record deal, I made four straight-ahead jazz records, from ’92 to ’96. “But in ’92 I met DJ Greyboy, and we started doing what was then called acid jazz. He kind of put the band together for his record release party. We started playing together at the end of ’93 and just never stopped. “He was never really that involved in the band farther along than a year or two. His record collection was really a source of inspiration, and from there we took our own direction. And this is where we are.” Greyboy Allstars also includes Robert Walter (keys), Elgin Park (guitar), Aaron Redfield (drums) and Chris Stillwell (bass). “I’ve always had my hands in a bunch of stuff,” Denson adds, “but this has definitely been the most fun thing as a player, for me.” The groove gauntlet was thrown down with the 1995 debut, West Coast Boogaloo, and has been spruced and juiced continually over the years “I think the music’s changed in relation to what’s going on in the rest of the world,” offers Denson. “There’s still all that same stuff there, but there’s also a bunch of new things that have happened in the last 20 years that influenced the band. “When you look at the beginning of the band, it was under the banner of acid jazz. Then a few years later, acid jazz was kinda gone and it became ‘jam band.’ Then it became electronica, what everybody’s listening to. Then you’ve got

the alt rock/folky thing going on. I think all those things have influenced us, based on what we like. You listen to new music and you like differently because of it. It’s just been a total transformation in that way, of whatever we’re listening to.” And Inland Emperor, the newest Greyboy Allstars release, reflects the eclectic nature of each musician’s preferences. “For this record, I know Robert was listening to a lot of Michael Jackson,” Denson explains. “So some of those tunes of his are influenced by that — he starts with a Michael Jackson beat, as opposed to a hip hop beat or a boogaloo beat. So I think we’re just making a natural arc to what we are.” The Allstars’ fiery improv interplay has been a big hit a jam band festivals, and that’s something Denson enjoys, too. “With the members of this band, it’s a lot easier for me to let go and just play,” he says. “It’s always fun to think ‘I just want to practice and play good.’ I don’t have to think about what the set looks like and all that stuff. I know whatever we play is gonna kinda rock.”

Whatever anybody wants to call Karl Denson’s music is fine by him. At the moment he has his mitts on three vastly different bands, and he couldn’t be happier. “It’s genuinely fun, and it keeps me working without having to stress about my finances,” he says. “It’s one of those things where, as long as you’re making progress musically, it’s a good thing. “Playing in Slightly Stoopid’s been really fun because it’s totally something that I wouldn’t have expected to be doing. But I’m learning a ton about reggae. “I’m kind of a closet historian, so all of a sudden I’m hanging out with these guys that just want to smoke weed all day and play reggae … but they’re actually really knowledgeable about it and they’re making some great music.” CS SCAD New Alumni Concert The Greyboy Allstars, Mayer Hawthorne, Gringo Star Where: Forsyth Park When: At 6 p.m. Friday, May 31 Admission: Free

Wings Over America: A couple of people I know consider this the best live album ever made. I wouldn’t go that far, but it does capture a pretty exciting moment in time. When Wings toured the United States in 1976, Paul McCartney hadn’t been on a stage here for 10 years, since the Beatles’ final concert in San Francisco. Wings had suffered a difficult birth — despite McCartney’s considerable talents, his preference for lightweight pop music simply irritated people. On the early Wings records, song after inane song celebrated the simple joys of home and family, and worse still, although the music was often innovative and tuneful, he didn’t seem to spend a whole lot of time on his lyrics. The problem with Paul McCartney, it was said in the rock press, was that he wasn’t John Lennon. The problem with Wings was that they weren’t the Beatles. Right out of the gate, in 1971, the band was all but written off. Hindsight’s a funny thing. All these years later, McCartney’s music — and indeed, much of his Wings output — holds up far better than Lennon’s. Of course, he’s still out there touring, and fans flocks in the hundredthousands to bask in the presence of one of the world’s great contemporary musicians. But he’s 70 now, and while his energy never seems to flag, that golden voice is starting to sound tired and strained. He’s had the same brilliant backup band for over a decade — they’re young, faceless guys, but

Post-Beatle Paul in his prime

by Bill DeYoung | bill@connectsavannah.com

they reproduce those Beatles classics with faithful finesse. McCartney and his band draw from the bottomless well of nostalgia with epic concerts top-heavy with tunes from When He Was Fab. Back to Wings Over America. The summer ’76 tour came on the heels of Band on the Run and Venus and Mars, two marvelously well-constructed albums that found McCartney reestablishing his credibility with both press and public (he seemed to have put a bit of effort into them, and for a man for whom melodies came effortlessly, that was a big deal). Both albums had spawned monster hit singles, and by the time he took his band on the road, “Silly Love Songs” — love it or hate it, it was a catchy record — was on top of the charts. He was ready. What you hear on these two CDs, newly remastered and reissued after a decade out of print, is, quite simply, post-Beatle Paul at the very top of his game. Nobody in rock ‘n’ roll could scream-sing like he does on “Hi Hi Hi,” “Call Me Back Again, “Rock Show,” “Soily” and the set’s other brawlers. He makes it sound effortless. His bass playing stands out too — a bedrock that runs and bubbles even as he’s singing his lungs out, and an integral part of what was, and there’s no other way to say it, a damn good rock ‘n’ roll band. Of course, nobody bought Wings’ records, or went to the shows, to hear Joe English, Jimmy McCullough, Denny Laine or Linda McCartney. They’re all just fine — even Linda — but now, as then, there was really only one draw here. Laine takes lead vocals on several songs, most notably his soulful, ‘60s

Moody Blues hit “Go Now,” but it’s still the Paul McCartney show. Laine sings “Spirits of Ancient Egypt,” but it’s McCartney’s bass work and background vocals that make it soar. This was state-of-the-art, smoke and lasers arena rock, 1976. Real horns! Real keyboards! As long as his records were selling in droves alongside Led Zeppelin, the Stones, the Eagles and Peter Frampton, McCartney was going to give the audience a concert spectacle every bit as grand as those other guys. One of the joys of hearing Wings Over America again, for me, is revisiting all the “deep cuts” he hasn’t performed since this period. Oh, today McCartney still plays “Live and Let Die,” “Jet,” “Let Me Roll It” and “Maybe I’m Amazed. “ But some of the absolute gems here — “Beware My Love,” “Listen to What the Man Said,” “You Gave Me the Answer” (a “Honey Pie”-style dance tune)” “Letting Go” and even the goofy “Magneto and Titanium Man” and “Let ‘Em In” – have never (or rarely) been broached in concert since. It’s as if Wings never existed. Of the 28 songs on this sprawling album, only five are Beatles tunes, three of them done acoustically. If you want to know what a rock concert in the 1960s was like, seek out The Beatles At the Hollywood Bowl. For the ‘70s experience, look no further than Wings Over America. It was state of the art for its time, it holds up remarkably well, and it’s got a ton of great music you might never have heard before. The same guy was in both bands. Did I mention that? (Rock Show, the film version of Wings Over America, will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray in June.) CS

ARebranding new anbrew on tea ancient Native American staple by jessica leigh lebos | jll@connectsavannah.com

When you talk tea in the Lowcountry, it usually means orange pekoe over ice, sweet enough to rot the teeth right outta your head. In downtown Savannah, however, Lou Thomann is brewing up a new take on the ubiquitous Southern beverage, one that’s just as refreshing on a sultry summer day but without a packet of sugar in sight. The businessman (and husband of venerated local realtor Lori Judge) has rediscovered yaupon, a type of holly tree that grows from the Carolinas down to Florida. When roasted and steeped in boiling water, the leaves of the yaupon tree produce a tasty and stimulating beverage much like its

South American cousins, yerba mate and guayusa. The indigenous people of the Southeast sipped this “black drink” daily and ritually for centuries, calling the health-giving plant “Big Medicine.” Thomann is hoping to revive their reverence with his new company, Pow Wow Yaupon Tea. “This is an American treasure that has been lost,” explains Thomann as he serves a thick-bottomed glass of yaupon tea, ice cubes tinkling. With a slight earthy flavor and a naturally sweet finish, it tastes like clean air

after a thunderstorm. “That’s without a thing added,” he promises. Thomann’s appreciation of yaupon began when he and Judge were adventuring with their son on Ossabaw Island. Their guide, naturalist John “Crawfish” Crawford, pointed out the massive stands of bushytopped trees and helped brew up a batch of leaves around the campfire. Back at home, Thomann researched yaupon and found that it contains a massive amount of antioxidants as well as caffeine and another buzzgiving alkaloid, theobromine — the same one found in chocolate. Yaupon tea was also the first toast continues on p. 30

of the colony of Georgia: Records indicate that Tomochichi presented a cup to General Oglethorpe as a gesture of goodwill when he landed on Yamacraw Bluff. Other Americans dug it, too: Levi Strauss, the 19thcentury genius who forged the sartorial revolution known as jeans, called yaupon “good for drinking, good for thinking.” So why are most Southerners ignorant of the wonderful heritage growing in our own backyards? It appears to be a case of bad PR. Just as yaupon was enjoying a nice reputation amongst new settlers for its invigorating qualities, a Scottish botanist named William Aiton assigned it the Latin name ilex vomitoria. According to University of Florida professor Francis E. Putz, Aiton observed Native American purification rituals that culminated in vomiting and blamed the brew, though yaupon has proved to contain no such purgative qualities. Aiton may also have been employed by the Ceylon Tea Company, who was not interested in competition. “This could be the first case of corporate espionage,” muses Thomann. Yaupon got another bad blow during the Civil War, when blockades prevented tea and coffee from making their way south. The Confederates turned to the trees, and the brew suffered a reputation as “the poor man’s drink” long after General Lee surrendered. Yaupon is also known by its Muskogee name “cassina,” or “asi” for short. The eponym of the Seminole leader Osceola is derived from “Asi Yahola,” which means “Black Drink Singer” but sounds vaguely obscene. Thomann is bringing back the class.

Live Music This Weekend!

“Now that people are more educated about what’s in it, I think there’s going to be a demand,” he says, adding that low-calorie beverages containing guayusa and yerba mate are making significant inroads in the ready-to-drink beverage market. Pow Wow has been branded as the “American mate” and sports a sharp logo in moss-colored tones. Production is still in its bantling stages as its owner roasts leaves stored in lawn bags in the garage, but the stage is set for growth with imminent plans to sell tins of loose tea at farmers markets and small batches of refrigerated bottles. (To make it shelf stable, citric acid must be added, which changes the flavor. Thomann is experimenting with an original blend as well as flavors like hibiscus, lemongrass and fruit from another storied Lowcountry tree, the mulberry.) Pow Wow launched a Kickstarter campaign in April to finance larger equipment, though Thomann resolves that his company will continue to sustainably harvest the leaves by only plucking the tips of the trees by hand. Future plans include partnering with timber companies to harvest from their untouched yaupon trees, and eventually, a yaupon farm. “I would love to create an industry,” he says. “That’s the dream.” In the meantime, Thomann is putting Pow Wow to the taste test next week at the BevNET New Product Showdown in in New York City, as well as the World Tea Expo in Vegas. He’s bringing Pow Wow Yaupon Tea blended with a bit of stevia, a natural sweetener also derived from the leaves of a plant native to North America. “This IS the south,” he winks. “Tea’s got to be a little sweet.” cs

Whether you’re a UFO buff or not, you have a unique opportunity coming your way this week. Not only can you screen a new documentary about little-known UFO research, you can give feedback to help make the rough-cut better. Zero-Point: the Story of Mark McCandlish and the Flux Liner is the project of James Allen, a SCAD MFA graduate in Film and TV. “It’s an unfinished project, with some rough edges,” says the filmmaker. “But the story is all there, the main structure is there.” The film shows this Sunday (June 2) at the Sentient Bean, sponsored by the Psychotronic Film Series.

In addition to looking at overall length, Allen says “At this screening I want to get a sense of how the story and information comes across — what you liked and didn’t like, if it’s captivating or you fall asleep halfway through.” The storyline is absolutely fascinating, and centers on the story of Mark McCandlish, a well-regarded aerospace illustrator.

It goes something like this: “Mark was a very successful illustrator in the aeronautics and defense industry in the ‘80s — he worked for all kinds of major contractors,” says Allen. McCandlish and a friend, a fellow aviation buff, were set to go to an air show at an Air Force base in California. But at the last minute McCandlish got a lucrative freelance gig he couldn’t turn down. “His friend got back and said he’d met some high-level guy — like some assistant secretary of defense or something — and ended up getting into a top secret air show where he saw a bunch of prototype stuff,” Allen

same thing,” Allen says. “A number of physicists have backed up the assertion that you could build a craft possibly faster than light, that works by basically polarizing space/time.” That “sucker punch from the future” technology, as it’s called in the film, is zero point energy, and Allen explains it like this: “Scientists discovered in the ‘60s that the so-called pure vacuum of space is not just an empty void — there’s an incredibly dense energetic background field,” he says. So much energy that a shot glass full of this material could “evaporate the world’s oceans or power the eastern seaboard for 100 years if you extracted potential energy in that space.” Simply put, zero point energy is a “basically unlimited energy source everywhere,” Allen says. “It’s a pretty compelling topic in my view. If this kind of technology was brought out and implemented in the public sphere it would change the face of the earth.” Still, the film focuses more on McCandlish’s fascination about the craft and zero point energy. motivation at first was not to go public, “but then he was like holy smokes, this is real Star Trek technology here,” Allen says. “It’s a little bit of a cautionary tale, though. He’s essentially lost his career,” Allen laments. “The past 15 years have not been easy for Mark. He’s the sweetest guy ever, we’re really good friends now. I like to think I drilled down more than other interviews with him,” says the filmmaker. Because of Allen’s background in visual effects, you’ll see “the most accurate CGI rendition of that vehicle on the planet at this point. It’s a really good 3D model and we make use of that.” Psychotronic Films Executive and Artistic Director Jim Reed explains why he broke his usual rule about not curating student films in his series. “I knew within the first 30 minutes of James’ film that it was a good match for my organization — and specifically for the occasional Sunday night shows we’ve been putting on at the Bean,” says Reed. “Those events are separate from

our regular Wednesday night series, and afford me a bit more leeway in programming. Also, I liked the idea that he wanted to show a rough cut of the film and solicit feedback from our audience.” The subject matter of the film, Reed says, “dovetails nicely with the boundary-pushing ethos of my organization, and by and large, the folks who regularly attend PFS screenings are extremely savvy viewers. They understand the mechanics of cinema, and they know when a film’s pacing, or plot or production design works — and when it doesn’t,” he says. So come to the Bean, relax, and pickup a feedback card to have your say on the final cut. cs Sneak Preview of Zero-Point: the Story of Mark McCandlish and the Flux Liner with Q&A with James Allen and his collaborator SCAD prof Jim Gladman When: Sunday, June 2 Where: the Sentient Bean Coffeehouse Time: 8PM (one screening only) Cost: $7

says. “The friend said ‘I think I saw something I’m not supposed to see’ — stealth technology and some type of manmade antigravity craft. We’re talking about potentially faster than light.” The UFO angle is set up from the opening frames, as the film reveals a presentation in 2001 at the National Press Club in which a number of very high-ranking, highly-credentialed people talk openly about their experience with extraterrestrial presences. The idea is that the craft McCandlish’s friend saw — the friend has since refused to be quoted in the film, though he doesn’t deny his account — was possibly “reverse-engineered” from an extraterrestrial craft. In this case, the so-called “Flux Liner, or “Alien Reproduction Vehicle,” as it was also labeled, perhaps as a joke. Or not a joke? Allen says McCandlish soon put his illustration skills to work in a meticulous cutaway blueprint of the craft as described to him by his friend. “I did some more digging, and found out other people had seen the

Summer movie preview

More flicks than you can shake a bead of sweat at

by matt brunson | myeahmatt@gmail.com

The 2013 summer movie season began with a heavy metal act (Iron Man 3, which opened May 3) and will end with a pop performance (One Direction: This Is Us, the boy-band documentary that’s out Aug. 30). In between, Hollywood will emit a steady siren song that will ensnare moviegoers of all stripes. The slate includes the expected rash of sequels (including Fast & Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III, both May 24; Grown Ups 2, July 12; Red 2, July 19; Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Aug. 9; Kick-Ass 2, Aug. 16), a sizable number of buddy flicks (Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in The Internship, June 7; Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in The Heat, June 28; Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in The Lone Ranger, July 5; Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D., July 19; Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg in 2 Guns, Aug. 2), a handful of animated efforts (Epic, May 24; Despicable Me 2, July 5;

Turbo, July 19; The Smurfs 2, Aug. 2; Planes, Aug. 9), and at least two massive, Earth-in-peril CGI productions (After Earth, May 31; Pacific Rim, July 12). Some sound promising (R.I.P.D. could be fun if handled right) while others sound painful (the original Grown Ups made my 10 Worst list for 2010, so I’m not exactly salivating over more of the same). Still, none would make my Sweet 16, those titles that hold the most promise for me over the course of the next three-plus months. Those movies are cited below, in alphabetical order. As always, release dates are subject to

change. Before Midnight - The 1995 effort Before Sunrise was decent but hardly revelatory, so I was caught completely offguard by the excellence of its 2004 follow-up, Before Sunset. As before, there’s a nine-year span between films, meaning we catch up with the once eternally youthful Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) as they settle into middle age. (June 21) The Bling Ring – Writer-director Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation was one of the great movies of the 2000s, so even though her subsequent efforts, Marie Antoinette and (especially) Somewhere, were both disappointments, I’ll be looking forward to her films for at least another 25 years. Based on a real story detailed in a Vanity Fair article, this stars Emma Watson as one of a group of teens who rip off celebrities’ homes. (June TBD) Blue Jasmine – After his extended

European stay – seven of his last eight features were filmed on the other side of the Atlantic – Woody Allen returns stateside for this picture about a New York housewife (Cate Blanchett). The supporting cast – not as star-studded as usual – includes Alec Baldwin, Louis C.K. and, uh, Andrew Dice Clay. (No Local Date Set) Byzantium – Director Neil Jordan helmed one of the great – and unsung – werewolf films with 1985’s The Company of Wolves and also orchestrated the moody 1994 adaptation of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire. Clearly, he knows his way around a horror flick, which bodes well for this thriller about two vampires (Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan) haunting an Irish town. (No Local Date Set) The East – Or, Occupy Wall Street: The Movie. A former FBI agent (Brit Marling) now working for a private firm goes undercover to bust a group

(June 21) Now You See Me – Zombieland stars Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson and The Dark Knight supporting players Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman are among the all-stars participating in this thriller about a team of illusionists who somehow manage to rob corrupt businesses during their performances. (May 31) This Is the End – James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill are among the many actors appearing as themselves in this film, but it isn’t a documentary. Instead, it’s an offbeat comedy in which a bunch of popular actors gather for a house party, only to discover that the world is ending and everyone is panicking. (June 12) The Way, Way Back – Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, who both won Oscars (along with Alexander Payne) for adapting The Descendants, serve as writer-directors of this coming-ofage tale about a teenage boy (Liam James) who spends his summer vacation making friends with a water park employee (Sam Rockwell). Little Miss Sunshine co-stars Toni Collette and Steve Carell appear as, respectively, the teen’s mom and her obnoxious boyfriend. (No Local Date Set) The Wolverine – X-Men Origins: Wolverine underwhelmed both critics and audience, yet despite (because of?) that fact, one of Marvel’s most popular superheroes has landed another solo gig. In this outing, Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) finds himself battling samurai warriors in Japan. (July 26) The World’s End – This Is the End won’t be the only end-of-the-world comedy in theaters this summer. Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the British blokes who between them wrote, directed and starred in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, now reunite for this comedy in which the attempt by a group of friends to retrace the steps of their pub crawl from 20 years ago runs into some unexpected difficulty on a massive scale. (Aug. 23) World War Z – Here’s hoping the perpetually interesting zombie genre stays, uh, alive with the release of this large-scale saga in which unending armies of the undead threaten to wipe out the entire human race. Brad Pitt stars as a United Nations worker hoping to figure out a way to control the epidemic. (June 21) CS

of anarchists who disrupt the activities of corrupt corporations, but she finds herself conflicted once she befriends the members of the outfit (including ones played by Alexander Skarsgard and Ellen Page). (June 21) Elysium – Or, Occupy Wall Street: The OTHER Movie. Writer-director Neill Blomkamp’s first film since his Oscar-nominated sleeper hit District 9, Elysium focuses on a future in which the 1% live in luxury on a space station while the 99% live in poverty on a devastated Earth. Determined to help his fellow sufferers, one man (Matt Damon) undertakes a dangerous journey to set things right. (Aug. 9) I’m So Excited! – Pedro Almodovar has snagged two of his most dependable actors, Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz, for this typically colorful romp about the radical behavior of the crew members and passengers of an imperiled airplane. (No Local Date Set) Man of Steel – The 1978 screen version of Superman still gets my vote as the best superhero film ever made, and the ill-fated 2006 reboot Superman Returns is better than its reputation. So I remain guardedly optimistic about this latest attempt to jumpstart a new franchise, this time with Henry Cavill in the role of Clark Kent/Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Zack Snyder (Watchmen) directs from a script by the Dark Knight Trilogy writing team of Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. (June 14) Monsters University – Monsters, Inc. remains one of Pixar’s best films – top five, easily – so there’s no reason not to be excited about checking out the earlier exploits of best friends Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman) during the period when they were college students – and enemies. (June 21) Much Ado About Nothing – How did director Joss Whedon spend his downtime during the filming of The Avengers? By filming another movie at the same time. This one’s a far cry from the Marvel mega-smash: Long wanting to adapt a Shakespeare work for the screen, Whedon made this for peanuts at his own home, turning to the stars of his past projects (including Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly) to bring to life the story of bickering lovers Benedick (Alexis Denisof) and Beatrice (Amy Ackers). The comical character of Dogberry is played by (of course) Nathan Fillion.

FAST & FURIOUS 6 OOP

Generally speaking, any series that has managed to make its way to a sixth installment is running solely on fumes, but that’s not the case with the Fast & Furious brand. This wildly inconsistent franchise seems to rise and fall on whenever the muse randomly hits its creators, which may be often (2011’s series-best Fast 5), inconsistently (the 2001 original, The Fast and the Furious) or not at all (2003’s wince-inducing 2 Fast 2 Furious). Place Fast & Furious 6 (or simply Furious 6, as it’s called on screen) toward the front of the assembly line: It may not be quite as satisfying a ride as its immediate predecessor, but with its cast of series notables, slam-bang action sequences and even a narrative surprise or two, it largely delivers the goods while also nicely setting up July 2014’s Fast & Furious 7. Yes, there will be a seventh entry, and that’s really no more of a spoiler than the fact that F&F6 features the return of Michelle Rodriguez to the lineup. Anyone who remained seated (or at least perched at the exit) during Fast Five’s end credits witnessed federal agent Luke Dobbs (Dwayne Johnson) learn that Letty Ortiz (Rodriguez), the presumably dead girlfriend/partnerin-crime of car thief Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), was still alive and stealing. F&F6 picks up with that storyline, as it’s revealed that, for reasons that soon become apparent, Letty is now working for a ruthless weapons-dealing mercenary named Shaw (Luke Evans). Dobbs needs help locating and stopping Shaw, so he turns to his old adversary Dominic and his merry band, all of whom are now millionaires living in countries with no extradition. If Dom and his team can stop Shaw, then it’s full pardons for all. Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) and Mia Toretto

(Jordana Brewster) are now parents, so Mia remains at home while Brian joins Dom on the road; also returning for the ride are lovebirds Han (Sung Kang) and Gisele (Gal Gadot) and wisecracking pals Roman (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges). The size of the cast already seems to rival that of any daytime TV soap opera, but director Justin Lin and writer Chris Morgan (both series vets) add yet another principal character: Agent Riley, a law enforcement officer played by Haywire lead Gina Carano. The addition of Carano, a former mixed martial arts superstar, guarantees that not all of the action will be conducted behind the wheel, and the film delivers on this promise by showcasing not one but two mano-amano bouts between Letty and Riley. These up-close-and-personal skirmishes nicely complement the road-warrior set-pieces, the biggest of which centers on a tank smashing, well, everything in its path.

Star Trek Into Darkness

OOOP

One of the promotional posters for Star Trek Into Darkness depicts a damaged Enterprise free-falling toward the planet below it, but any worries that J.J. Abrams’ series reboot will experience a similar tumble with this second installment can immediately be laid to rest. While it doesn’t quite reach the giddy heights of its 2009 predecessor, this new picture is terrific popcorn entertainment, the sort of bright, brawny blockbuster that used to define the summer movie season. What Abrams and his writers (Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman on the first picture, Orci, Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof on this one) are accomplishing with Gene Roddenberry’s brainchild mirrors a tightrope act performed with exquisite delicacy and balance. They’ve managed to

embrace the Star Trek canon while also expanding it, expertly weaving together elements that will appease the Trekkie faithful while also making the property more friendly toward the uninitiated (the latter point an occasional problem with the 10 originalseries and Next Generation flicks). Don’t understand the references to Harry Mudd and Tribbles? No matter, since there’s more than enough exposition, action and humor to otherwise engage the senses. Having introduced an alternatetimeline scenario in the previous picture, Abrams and company charge full steam ahead, opening with an Indiana Jones-like sequence that will inform many of the scenarios unfolding throughout the picture. Chief among them is the tension between James Kirk (Chris Pine), who hasn’t met a Starfleet regulation he can’t break, and Spock (Zachary Quinto), whose adherence to the rules taxes not only Kirk but also Uhura (Zoe Saldana), who’s learning that it’s not always easy dating a Vulcan. But personal issues take a back seat once a terrorist attack decimates a London building; the culprit is one John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), and Admiral Marcus (Peter Weller) orders the Enterprise crew to follow Harrison into the heart of darkness - his hideout deep in the Klingon zone - and terminate him with extreme prejudice. From here, the story takes some interesting turns; it also lends an enormous amount of complexity to Harrison, allows the returning cast members individual moments to shine (although I wished Dr. McCoy, perfectly played by Karl Urban, was continues on p. 40

movies

F&F6 is more clumsily penned than F5: The story isn’t as compelling, the characters aren’t integrated back into the action so much as catapulted back onto the scene, and the tension between Dom and Dobbs is sorely missed now that everyone is playing nice and no longer comparing the sizes of their crankshafts. As for the performers, we’ve accepted that, as the top-billed costar alongside Diesel, sleep-Walker will rack up plenty of screen mileage, but the overuse of the increasingly insufferable Gibson is a hindrance (fortunately, Ludacris’ natural charm compensates in their scenes together). Still, it’s nice to have Rodriguez back into the fold, and an exciting epilogue hints that audiences might get even more lucky with 7.

as integral to these films as he was to the series) and reworks elements from one of the classic Trek films in a highly imaginative manner. And as with the series, there’s also a trace of contemporary relevance: The sight of London falling leads Admiral Marcus to exclaim that Harrison means to “end our way of life,” a phrase that’s been uttered nonstop since 9/11 by Bush, Blair, Obama and others. Star Trek Into Darkness only flags toward the end, when a careful excision of a few minutes of CGI bombast would not have been unwelcome. In most other regards, though, the film is an unqualified success, and it promises a bright future for this tireless franchise.

Baz Luhrmann, known for his musicality, unique vision and radical departures from tradition in earlier films like Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge, serves it lukewarm and dialed in for Gatsby. In this flick, he misses an opportunity to draw out parallels to modernity and comes across as a cover band director, someone whose celebrated directorial ambitions coattail the mastery of others who came before him. Luhrmann’s only addition was the invented frame bookending the story with a psychiatrist in a mental ward, which is the most played-out cliché in the history of storytelling. Or maybe he just gave the people what they wanted. For the most part, the plot sticks doggedly enough to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s enduring masterpiece of the same name; a story detailing the

pratfalls of opulence, the lies we tell ourselves, the hopeful bravery of selfdelusional love and a mysterious man named Jay Gatbsy. Tobey Macguire assumes the role of quintessentially unreliable narrator Nick Carraway, a midwesterner who moves to Long Island only to play voyeur to a moneyed crew of acquaintances, driven by self-serving motivations, infidelities and unreachable expectations. The rest of the cast shines hi-gloss surface appeal. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as leading lady Daisy Buchanan, the classic foil for Helen of Troy. Add the beady eyes of Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan and Isla Fisher’s accent as Myrtle Wilson, and it’s safe to say everyone looks the part. The costume design: gorgeous. The art direction: dizzying, with imagery that only occasionally feels heavyhanded. Pivotal scenes at the Plaza and Tom Buchanan’s Manhattan apartment are arguably stand-alone shorts, something Luhrmann’s been focusing on as of late. Sadly, a good film demands to be more than a series of shorts. As far as page-to-screen adaptations go, this one falls unbearably short; a flaccid and faltering homage to literary greatness. Perhaps less so for the unpaged masses, for whom watered-down eye candy may appeal. In bursts of fits and starts, the pacing stalls and the intensity warbles. The slow-motion whirl spins into mawkish cartoon. The Great Gatbsy is a lackluster non-departure that leaves anyone with a fair to middling intelligence quotient wishing they’d stayed home, bought the soundtrack (featureing Lana Del Ray, Jay-Z, Fergie, Beyonce,

Nobody would think to call The Iceman a romanticized version of anything, but when compared to the real-life story of Richard Kuklinski, this excessively brutal film comes off almost as gentle and dreamy-eyed as a Nicholas Sparks adaptation. Kicking off in the mid-1960s, the movie stars Michael Shannon as Kuklinski, who woos and weds Deborah (Winona Ryder) while holding down a menial job dubbing porno tapes (he tells Deborah that he dubs cartoons for a living). An encounter with crime boss Roy DeMeo (Ray Liotta) leads to him working as a hit man for the mobster, and once that relationship begins to sour, he teams up with another killer-for-cash (Chris “Captain America” Pine, unrecognizable under all that ratty hair) for more murderous mayhem. Over the course of approximately two decades, Kuklinski kills over 100 people, and the sick punchline is that his wife and daughters are never the wiser, believing him to be a financial broker. The movie posits that Kuklinski did everything for the sake of his family, with the character himself saying that he only cares for Deborah and his girls and nothing else. The film also repeatedly pushes his claim that he

will never hurt women and children, preferring instead to only murder men — and even then mainly for monetary gain. In real life, though, Richard Kuklinski was more of a serial killer than a paid assassin — he enjoyed the art of the kill — and he would occasionally beat up his wife on the side. Writer-director Ariel Vromen and co-writer Morgan Land, adapting both Anthony Bruno’s book and an HBO documentary, naturally need to streamline actual events for the sake of a coherent movie that clocks in with an acceptable running time, but in this case, they have marginally softened the character while also jettisoning many elements that would have made this picture unique. As it stands, this largely plays out as a formulaic mob flick, full of messy double-crosses, tough-guy patter, secretive meetings in big limos, and debts that must be repaid in blood. Shannon delivers an appropriately steely performance, but since his character isn’t inherently interesting, he can only provide so much of a center to the movie. The supporting roles are all well-cast — Robert Davi is especially memorable as a gangland in-between, and the prolific James Franco pops up in one particularly distinctive sequence — but even the heat these actors are packing isn’t enough to thaw out the picture’s frosty approach.

ARIES

(March 21-April 19) Back in the 1920s, the governor of Texas was determined to forbid the teaching of foreign languages in public schools. To bolster her case, she called on the Bible. “If English was good enough for Jesus Christ,” she said, “it’s good enough for us.” She was dead serious. I suspect you may soon have to deal with that kind of garbled thinking, Aries. And it may be impossible to simply ignore it, since the people wielding it may have some influence on your life. So what’s the best way to deal with it? Here’s what I advise: Be amused. Quell your rage. Stay calm. And methodically gather the cool, clear evidence about what is *really* true.

you don’t slurp?”

CANCER

June 21-July 22 Here’s a thought from philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein: “A person will be imprisoned in a room with a door that’s unlocked and opens inwards as long as it does not occur to him to pull rather than push that door.” I’d like to suggest that his description fits you right now, Cancerian. What are you going to do about it? Tell me I’m wrong? Reflexively agree with me? I’ve got a better idea. Without either accepting or rejecting my proposal, simply adopt a neutral, open-minded attitude and experiment with the possibility. See what happens if you try to pull the door open.

TAURUS

LEO

A few weeks ago, the principal at a school in Bellingham, Washington announced that classes would be canceled the next day. What was his rationale? A big storm, a bomb threat, or an outbreak of sickness? None of the above. He decided to give students and teachers the day off so they could enjoy the beautiful weather that had arrived. I encourage you to make a similar move in the coming days, Taurus. Take an extended Joy Break -- maybe several of them. Grant yourself permission to sneak away and indulge in spontaneous celebrations. Be creative as you capitalize profoundly on the gifts that life is offering you.

If you have been waiting for the right moment to perfect your party skills, I suspect this might be it. Is there anything you can do to lower your inhibitions? Would you at least temporarily consider slipping into a chronic state of fun? Are you prepared to commit yourself to extra amounts of exuberant dancing, ebullient storytelling, and unpredictable playtime? According to my reading of the astrological omens, the cosmos is nudging you in the direction of rabble-rousing revelry.

April 20-May 20

GEMINI

May 21-June 20 In Japan it’s not rude to slurp while you eat your ramen noodles out of a bowl. That’s what the *Lonely Planet* travel guide told me. In fact, some Japanese hosts expect you to make sounds with your mouth; they take it as a sign that you’re enjoying your meal. In that spirit, Gemini, and in accordance with the astrological omens, I encourage you to be as inhibited as you dare this week -- not just when you’re slurping your noodles, but in every situation where you’ve got to express yourself uninhibitedly in order to experience the full potential of the pleasurable opportunities. As one noodle-slurper testified: “How can you possibly get the full flavor if

July 23-Aug. 22

VIRGO

Aug. 23-Sept. 22 Where exactly are your power spots, Virgo? Your bed, perhaps, where you rejuvenate and reinvent yourself every night? A place in nature where you feel at peace and at home in the world? A certain building where you consistently make good decisions and initiate effective action? Wherever your power spots are, I advise you to give them extra focus. They are on the verge of serving you even better than they usually do, and you should take steps to ensure that happens. I also advise you to be on the lookout for a new power spot. It’s available.

LIBRA

Sept. 23-Oct. 22 Reverence is one of the most useful emotions. When you respectfully acknowledge the sublime beauty of something greater than yourself, you do yourself a big favor. You generate authentic humility and sincere gratitude, which

are healthy for your body as well as your soul. Please note that reverence is not solely the province of religious people. A biologist may venerate the scientific method. An atheist might experience a devout sense of awe toward geniuses who have bequeathed to us their brilliant ideas. What about you, Libra? What excites your reverence? Now is an excellent time to explore the deeper mysteries of this altered state of consciousness.

of his country and won the Nobel Peace Prize. Fast-forward to 2008. Mandela was still considered a terrorist by the United States, and had to get special permission to enter the country. Yikes! You probably don’t have an antiquated rule or obsolescent habit that’s as horrendous as that, Capricorn. But it’s past time for you to dissolve your attachment to *any* outdated attachments, even if they’re only mildly repressive and harmful.

SCORPIO

AQUARIUS

When explorer Ernest Shackleton was planning his expedition to Antarctica in 1914, he placed this ad in London newspapers: “Wanted: For hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, return doubtful. Honor and recognition in case of success.” Would you respond to a come-on like that if you saw it today? I hope not. It’s true that your sense of adventure is ratcheting up. And I suspect you’re itching for intense engagement with the good kind of darkness that in the past has inspired so much smoldering wisdom. But I believe you can satisfy those yearnings without putting yourself at risk or suffering severe deprivation.

As a renowned artist, photographer, and fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld has overflowed with creative expression for 50 years. His imagination is weird and fantastic, yet highly practical. He has produced a profusion of flamboyant stuff. “I’m very down to earth,” he has said, “just not this earth.” Let’s make that your mantra for the coming weeks, Aquarius: You, too, will be very down to earth in your own unique way. You’ll follow your quirky intuition, but always with the intent of channeling it constructively.

Oct. 23-Nov. 21

SAGITTARIUS Nov. 22-Dec. 21

“I’d rather not sing than sing quiet,” said the vivacious chanteuse Janis Joplin. Her attitude reminds me a little of Salvador Dali’s. He said, “It is never difficult to paint. It is either easy or impossible.” I suspect you Sagittarians may soon be in either-or states like those. You will want to give everything you’ve got, or else nothing at all. You will either be in the zone, flowing along in a smooth and natural groove, or else totally stuck. Luckily, I suspect that giving it all and being in the zone will predominate.

CAPRICORN

Dec. 22-Jan. 19 In 1948, Nelson Mandela began his fight to end the system of apartheid in his native South Africa. Eventually he was arrested for dissident activities and sentenced to life imprisonment. He remained in jail until 1990, when his government bowed to international pressure and freed him. By 1994, apartheid collapsed. Mandela was elected president

PISCES

Feb. 19-March 20 In the following passage, French novelist Georges Perec invites us to renew the way we look upon things that are familiar to us. “What we need to question,” he says, “is bricks, concrete, glass, our table manners, our utensils, our tools, the way we spend our time, our rhythms. To question that which seems to have ceased forever to astonish us.” A meditation like this could nourish and even thrill you, Pisces. I suggest you boost your ability to be sincerely amazed by the small wonders and obvious marvels that you sometimes take for granted.
