At about 11 a.m. on July 26, 2012, Matt Kohler was riding his bicycle on Highway 80 near Bloomingdale. A car came up behind him. The driver neglected to pay attention to the road for a split second. That was all it took. Kohler’s bike was hit from behind. He flew into the car’s windshield, then up and over and down onto the pavement. Matt Kohler was dead at age 22. He left behind his wife of less than two months, Kori Kohler — now a widow in her early 20s. “Matt meant the world to me and his family and friends, and also the whole community. He was such a huge part of Savannah and Georgia Southern,” says Kori. Outdoorsman, activist, jokester… Matt was known by many and had a real impact. “He helped restart the TKE fraternity at Georgia Southern after it had gone under,” Kori recalls of her husband, due to graduate with an accounting degree from GSU. “He was just such a bright light.” Kohler worked at Home Depot to help put himself through school. In their leisure time, Matt and Kori would often watch the Sand Gnats play. “He loved Savannah. He was part of the community,” says his wife. “This happened in the prime of his life because somebody neglected for one second to watch where they were going. He was so very full of life, and I want everybody to know that in an instant that can all be taken away.” There’s no way Kori can bring her husband back. But she is trying to spread the word about safe driving and the need for drivers to share the road with bicyclists. A recent study by the University of Georgia found that Chatham County was the most dangerous county in the state for car vs. bike incidents & injuries. From 20022011, there were seven car vs. bike fatalities in the area. At the top of the list of most dangerous routes, no surprises: Habersham Street, Bull Street, Abercorn.

Matt Kohler at a Sand Gnats game, one of his favorite pasttimes

A very special event this weekend spreads the message of vigilance and memorializes Kori’s husband’s remarkable life and contribution. On “Matt’s Moon River Cruise,” you can take a group bike ride from Ellis Square with a bunch of like-minded folks. What else is in store other than riding bicycles? Two words: BEER GARDEN. The ride culminates at one of Matt and Kori’s favorite hangouts, Moon River Brewing Company, with live music and a new microbrew launch in honor of Matt. Moon River Brewmaster John Pinkerton says as an avid road cyclist himself, the news of Matt’s passing “struck a deep chord for me as I thought of all of the people I know who still share the roads with vehicles in and around Savannah.” Knowing how much Matt and Kori enjoyed hanging out at Moon River, Pinkerton helped craft a special beer to be unveiled at the event. Matt’s Moon Cruise Pale Ale will be a “Belgo-American style Pale Ale, featuring the refreshing fruity/ spicy aroma of our Belgian yeast strain and the citrus/pine/ tropical fruit character of our American hop selections.” Also, this: a brand-new bike will be auctioned off at the event. Back to policy: A main goal of the event is to educate the public on how to safely share

the road with cyclists and increase awareness of Georgia’s “3-foot passing law.” “Georgia Bikes has been successful in recent years in achieving state level policy changes to improve cyclists’ safety on Georgia’s roads,” says Drew Wade, chairman of the Savannah Bicycle Campaign and a board member of Georgia Bikes. “Still, Chatham County has the highest rate of bike vs. auto injuries and fatalities in the state, and a tragedy like Matt’s highlights the need to continue to raise awareness about the problem.” So what exactly has caused the problem? “Most of our county is just not built for riding a bike in,” says Wade, citing a recent “bike score” showing decidedly mediocre results for Savannah — a score of 48 (Cambridge, Mass., got 91.5). “Bike scores are much better in town where it’s easier to bike, but in other areas people aren’t biking. And the ones that are, are probably getting hurt at higher rates.” Wade concludes that “It’s many years of autocentric planning and engineering.” cs Matt’s Moon River Cruise When: Sat., June 8, 2-5 p.m. (ride starts 1 p.m.) Where: Moon River Beer Garden, 21 W. Bay St. (Bike ride leaves from Ellis Square) Cost: Suggested donation is $20 and benefits Savannah Bicycle Campaign and Georgia Bikes.

A rendering of One West Victory shows historic buildings incorporated into new construction.

High density housing on the rise New developments transforming Savannah’s neighborhoods by Jessica Leigh Lebos | jll@connectsavannah.com

More than a year after it was approved by City Council, One West Victory has finally broken its first ground. A crane flew an American flag last week at the ceremony heralding the official start of the $25 million mixed use project at the site of the former Savannah Ice Company property. At 124,000 square feet, One West Victory includes the renovation of the iconic buildings between Bull and Whitaker along Victory Drive and will also blanket the corner with new construction for 114 multi-bedroom apartment units. Estimates of the number of new residents — likely but not limited to students — are between 335 and 350. Before the project was introduced to the Metropolitan Planning Commission last May, residents from the nearby neighborhood associations of Ardsley Park, Thomas Square and Metropolitan expressed concern about how the increase would affect their property values and quality of life. Jamestown Properties, the Atlanta-based real estate magnate behind high-profile successes in New York and Atlanta, responded by holding three public meetings before it went before the MPC. Known for its knack in reviving languishing properties to their former economic and community vitality,

Jamestown wooed residents with its commitment to LEED-certified building practices, generous greenspaces and thoughtful commercial planning and has garnered celebrity chef Hugh Acheson to head the new restaurant that will open in the 19th-century red brick building. Wide sidewalks and bike racks promise to keep things pedestrian and bicycle-focused at what will be a locus point for several neighborhoods. “We’re excited to be partnering with the local community to deliver a dynamic, student-focused residential community to the historic Starland neighborhood,” says Katharine Kelley, Jamestown’s Managing Director of Development and Construction. Though some discontent remains regarding the scale of the four-story parking garage that will border the railroad tracks on the west side of Bull Street, public reception has been mostly positive. Construction is expected to be completed by next summer, and the restaurant will open its doors in spring 2015. Also bringing new life to a faded landscape is the construction of The Savannah Lofts at the corner of East Broad and 39th Streets. Featuring 36

one-bedroom, two-story apartments with hardwood floors, stainless appliances and off-street parking, the units are meant to cater to Savannah’s ever-increasing student population as well as young professionals. The developers have also partnered with the city to revamp the streetscape with improved lighting, new trees and a linear park that will run along the front side of the apartments. Once a thriving commercial hub that contained Rex’s restaurant and Weiner Grocery Store, this stretch of East Broad hasn’t seen much action in the last 20 years. The Savannah Lofts development has been in the works since 2000, the days when Michael Brown was the city manager and this part of town had fallen into deep neglect. Owners Fred Krinsky and Bill Hall were able to buy up 14 contiguous properties, with a vision that includes the lofts as well as restaurants and other commercial use. “We came into the neighborhood during a down cycle...lots of crime, blight, poverty and vacant houses. But it is a great neighborhood, great architecture, great people, beautiful trees and the heart of Savannah,” writes Krinsky on the Savannah Lofts website. “Our job is to live up to the expectations we have created and to be a constructive, positive part of the neighborhood.”

The Savannah Lofts has also secured HUD funding; each unit will rent for $750 in accordance to the fair market value assessment for affordable housing. Original plans called for a Family Dollar to be built in conjunction with the project, but residents of nearby Baldwin Park rejected that idea. To keep in line with their elevated vision of the area, Krinsky and his associates are now bringing in former 700 Drayton chef Michael Semancik to open a taqueria in the Shiv’s convenience store currently across the street from the new lofts. “At different points in history it has been a commercial district of its own,” says Harley Krinsky, the developer also renovated the commercial strip on Habersham that includes AlSalaam Deli. “Bringing it back will be great for the whole area.” Both the apartments and the taqueria are scheduled for move-in by September 1. Also expected to be ready for new residents this fall is Avenues on 61st, the controversial development near Habersham Village. Chance Partners submitted site plans to the MPC last March for the 32 4-bedroom units in accordance to existing zoning for the property, which did not require a variance that would have alerted nearby property owners that 128 more people would be moving into

the neighborhood. After construction began this spring, it became evident that the project was being leased by the individual bedroom for $610 a month. This was not revealed on the original site plan and changed the zoning classification from multi-family to rooming house, increasing the current parking requirements. The Olin Heights Neighborhood Association brought the oversight to city officials, protesting rent-by-theroom policy as well as the project’s massive scale. The developers claim they were not aware that Avenues on 61st violated zoning ordinances and have changed the leasing agreements to conform with city code. In a letter dated May 16, City Manager Stephanie Cutter has also demanded that the developers address issues associated with noise, light pollution, a tree buffer and on-site management, though there is no mention of mitigating the project’s excessive height. Avenues on 61st has no commercial component, though overflow parking is expected to be taken up by Habersham Village as well as on surrounding streets. Chance Partners could not be reached for comment, but representatives are slated to address concerns at a public meeting with residents and city officials this Wednesday, June 5 at 6pm at the Whitfield Methodist Church on 55th Street at Waters Avenue. “They can change the wording on the leases, but that doesn’t fix the fact that there are going to be too many people and too many cars in too small a space,” says Richard Bartels, president of the Olin Heights Neighborhood Association. “But it’s here now, and we’ve going to have to figure out how to live with it.” cs

Don’t worry, Bea’s happy

Walking and talking with the new director of The Creative Coast Last week, when I called up new Creative Coast director Bea Wray for an interview, the first thing she asked me is “Can you walk and talk?” I replied that I would be fine if I kept chewing gum out of the equation. Probably. But even without a stick of Wrigley’s I had a hard time keeping up. It was only her fifth day on the job as the head of Savannah’s entrepreneurial nurture nest and innovation think tank, and Bea was already moving at lightning speed. When I arrived at the airy offices on Wright Square, she’d just gotten off the phone with philanthropist Howard Morrison and had squeezed me in before a lunch meeting with a board member. I was thinking my old Dansko mary janes would serve me well for a leisurely stroll around Tomochichi’s Rock when I noticed Bea was wearing cross trainers. And she intended to use them. “Let’s head towards the park,” she suggested, already ten feet ahead of me, blond curls flying behind her.

“We’re the glue. We put the suits with the tattoos together with a purpose,” Wray says of The Creative Coast’s mission

Recorder in hand, I gamely trotted along, trying to avoid tripping over the cobblestones as I reconciled the impressive person I had read about on paper (Harvard MBA, venture capital darling of Siemens Business Services, successful serial entrepreneur) with the grinning lady in the pink polka dot skirt kvelling about her three kids. the part, it became evident after just a few blocks that Bea Wray is much more than a very smart cheerleader for Savannah’s creative class. Bea lives on Hilton Head Island, but her Savannah roots run deep: Her grandfather was a deacon at Cavalry Baptist Church when the social hall was just a card table and some foldup chairs. Her other grandmother

worked on Broughton Street bringing in container ships. Both her parents attended Savannah High and came up “very poor,” and Bea grew up understanding that with this city’s gilded charms comes great challenges. “Savannah was a place you escaped from,” she once believed. So she did — to Emory, then Boston, then San Francisco, New York,

“In my mind, nothing squelches creativity like poverty. Nothing ignites it like prosperity. Period.” I had to admit to Bea that while I have always been a great admirer of the sexy techy-business network branded by Miller in 2007 and most recently headed by community advocate Jake Hodesh, I wasn’t exactly sure what the Creative Coast does. I mean, I dig the programming like FastPitch (a local, kinder version of Shark Tank) and the inspirational showcase that is TEDx. But say you’ve got this great idea for a widget or service. What next? “Well, our mission is to encourage, enhance and build innovative, knowledge-based businesses. But what does that really mean, right?” she asked rhetorically as the buckle of my Danskos rubbed uncomfortably on my ankle. “We’re the glue. We put the suits with the tattoos together with a purpose.” She calls her predecessors’ legacies a “launching pad” and means to kick up the reach beyond the Talmadge Bridge. She’s still defining her next steps but intends to utilize her extensive network as well tap into the region’s undersung assets, like AASU’s IT department and the Darla Moore School of Business in South Carolina. The board chose her from 300 applicants, banking that her consulting skills — worth $300 an hour in the big world — will translate into greater opportunities for us all. Perhaps the expectation of Bea’s new era is best described by board member Rad Harrell, the host of this Friday’s sold out TEDx event (lucky you if you got your ticket!) “Chris was the beta; he got it going and defined it. Then there was Jake; he was version 1.0, laying out the market and creating relationships,” explains Rad with his signature enthusiasm. “Now we have Bea, the 2.0, who’s bringing it all up to scale — she’s a rocket ship.” Tell me about it. By the end of my “walk” with her, I had practically melted my soles of my shoes. Judging from her pace, there will be no coasting under Bea’s watch — maybe it should be renamed the Creative Sprint? (*Boom* Thanks folks, I’m here every week! Tip your servers!) She may push Savannah to be and do more, and I have a feeling it will totally be worth the blisters. cs

Munich — until 9/11, when she and husband returned with their new baby to American soil “temporarily.” They fell in love with Daufuskie Island, settled into Lowcountry life. But Bea is not one to be lulled into a stupor, no matter how lovely the scenery. In 2001, she met with thenCreative Coast director Chris Miller, who helped her hatch Source Harbor Inc., a third-party escrow company that protects source codes and intellectual property for those who license software. I’m not exactly sure what that means, but apparently it was a damn good idea. “I walked in and said ‘Hey, can you help me start by business?’ And Chris shook his ponytail at me and told me to go for it,” Bea remembered as we breezed up Bull Street, the exhaust from the traffic mixing with the lemony scent of magnolias. “I raised local dollars, built up four offices with clients in 14 different countries. I sold it to an international company, returned everyone their investments, then took off a couple of years to be a mom. That’s exactly what I want to help other people do.” Bea and her growing family eventually moved to be with her parents on Hilton Head, and she’s kept her tan toes in the entrepreneurial waters with the social media site Kin Valley and a mobile app for ER doctors. She often catches a ride with other big-brained commuters like ThincSavannah co-founder Tom Shimado and HunterMaclean powerhouse Diana McKenzie. “When I come across that bridge, it means something to me,” she said. “I have a very joyful life. I’m a very happy person. I like creativity. I also like to be prosperous. I want to help people understand their resources.” Our conversation jumped from socioeconomic strategies to soccer mom sympathies back to Savannah’s position in the global economy as we blazed past the Forsyth Park fountain. I mention that as hard as SEDA and other entities work to bring sound business here, we seem to be hanging out in a certain comfort zone. If Savannah really is going to make a push to become the worldclass city we believe it can be, we’ve got to create sustainable jobs for all these college grads. Bea’s key seems to be marrying off some of the starving artistic potential around here to a greater capitalistic vision:

more than miles

By April Groves

Good running, giving back Survivors abound in the world of charity running events “I am not a wounded warrior. I was a wounded toddler,” I overheard Kelly Luckett say during a run meet up downtown. While it is not the most important or interesting thing about Kelly, the result of her “wounded toddler” episode is often the first thing people notice. This nine time Boston Marathon participant, Ultra marathon runner lost her right leg. As an aside, you will find that the members of the ragtag group “Savannah Rough Runners” may show up in “More Than Miles” a bit more frequently than would typically be prudent of a traditional column. Journalistic ideals tend to favor the unbiased. Lucky for me, I tend to not be traditional or a journalist. Back to last Saturday. The Challenged Athletes Foundation was founded in 1997 to help the physically challenged have the opportunity to pursue an active lifestyle. They assist all types of disabilities with no regard to ability level or previous athletic performance. In other words, you don’t have to be fast, you just have to be willing — an idea The Savannah Rough Runners totally get. For many physically challenged athletes, doing this on their own is not only a physical hurdle, but a financial one. Kelly explained, “Do you know that a below-knee running prosthesis, such as mine, costs around $15,000? Insurance considers it a luxury and very few companies ever cover the cost.” Loosely sanctioned and promoted by word of mouth, Masumi’s 24 Hour Run for Challenged Athletes Foundation at Daffin Park brought out runners of various interest, distance, and speed. They flowed in and out over the course of the day and through the night. When 8 a.m. Sunday rolled around, Lara Zoller, who had kicked off the race with a stirring performance of The Star Spangled Banner, finished up the event with a whopping 100 miles logged around Daffin Park.

Masumi Herota & Kelly Luckett at the 24 Hour Run for Challenged Athletes Foundation at Daffin Park

The runners raised nearly $1,000 for the charity. Charity running is not new in Savannah. Anyone with a 5k t-shirt (and there are a ton of those!) can see what cause was supported through those miles. Some are as new and organic as the Daffin Park Run, showing that the feet of a few can make a difference. Still another has been working out the details for 25 years and turned the training cycle into a cancer fighting army. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training has been raising money to help combat blood cancers since 1988. Spearheaded locally by Jennie Brewster, this organization works with participants to attain event specific training and fundraising goals. “TNT mostly attracts beginner runners and walkers,” says Jennie, “but we also have lots of alumni,

intermediate and advanced runners, triathletes, and cyclists. We really run the gamut. It’s a very encouraging, non-intimidating environment. Any level of fitness is welcome. It’s a great way to meet new people and push yourself out of your comfort zone to accomplish big goals – all while supporting life changing blood cancer research.” Jennie gets very excited when she talks about her TNT participants. It is easy to see why. These courageous athletes come from all different types of backgrounds and abilities to do what they can to support the cause. Tricia Thomas was in her late 50’s and discouraged about her health. She joined TNT in spring of 2011 to walk the San Diego half marathon. RNR Savannah will now be her fourth half marathon. Diane Woods is a leukemia survivor in her 50’s. She had never done any type of race. This year she is training for her second half marathon. David Costrini is a triathlete in his fourth year of TNT. In memory of a family friend, Dr. Jane Philbrick, he has raised somewhere around $50,000. He doesn’t need TNT for the training but his continued involvement motivates others and makes him a valuable training resource. Doug Farley is a TNT monster story. A leukemia survivor, he completed his first marathon in 2011. Now an Ultra runner, he’s planning to do the North Face Endurance 50K this season with TNT. Milly and Joe Pitts run, bike, swim, and coach in memory of her father who lost his battle to blood cancer when she was a child in the 1960’s. She is training to complete the America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride which covers 100 miles in Lake Tahoe. In times of need, adversity, challenge, and oppression, runners will seek the solution in a run. Of course during times of excess, support, success, and liberation, runners will also run. This leads some to say we are just looking for reasons to run. There is a lot of truth to that and I reply, “So what? Let’s do some good work.” cs

Blotter All cases from recent Savannah/ Chatham Police Dept. incident reports

All-meth edition The Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team (CNT) announced the “arrests and dismantling of two separate methamphetamine organizations operating throughout Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, and Bulloch Counties.”

In 2011, CNT began investigating several members of the Basham family following complaints of suspected drug activity resulting in the arrests of a husband and wife. Thomas and Melodie Basham were arrested in Bryan County by CNT in December 2011 following the seizure of a meth lab. Both Thomas Basham and Melodie Basham were charged with Manufacturing Methamphetamine by CNT and both were also charged with meth charges by the Richmond Hill Police Department in

a separate investigation. February 2013, Thomas Basham’s brother, Roger Basham and Hope Mitchell were both arrested by Richmond Hill Police following the seizure of a meth lab in Richmond Hill and were charged with Manufacturing Methamphetamine. During the following month, Thomas Basham while out on bond for the CNT arrest in 2011, was again arrested, this time by the Effingham County Sheriff ’s Office. Marcus Lindsey was also arrested. In that case, Thomas Basham and Lindsey were arrested after being found in an unlawful possession of pseudoephedrine obtained in Chatham County. Following the multiple arrests of the Basham family members in the surrounding counties “and knowing manufacturing methamphetamine often includes multiple persons, CNT focused its investigation on the Basham’s criminal empire” rather than the individual persons arrested in the separate incidents. There, CNT found additional family members and associates

• The Food and Drug Administration proposed recently to limit the quantity of tiny “mites” that could occupy imported cheese, even though living, crawling mites are a feature desired by aficionados. (“Cheese is absolutely alive!” proclaimed microbiologist Rachel Dutton, who runs the “cheese laboratory” at Harvard University.) In fact, cheese is home to various molds, bacteria and yeasts, which give it flavor, and sellers routinely use blowers to expel excessive critters, but the FDA now wants to limit them to 6 bugs per square inch. However, according to a May report on NPR, lovers of some cheeses, especially the French Mimolette, object, asserting both an indifference to the sight of mites creeping around -- and a fear of taste-loss (since the mites burrow into the hunk, aerating it and extending the flavor).

the straight dope

In a staff report on your site about whether nonsmoking actors use fake cigarettes when playing a part, the writer said there’s no such thing as noncarcinogenic smoke. What about the new electronic cigarettes — since they’re smokeless, are they noncarcinogenic? — Amit Anand Browsing online, we find claims like this: “[Our] premier line-up of smokeless electronic cigarettes utilizes innovative technology to provide a smoking experience without the dangers, hassle and even expense of traditional cigarettes.” Here one recalls the miracle drug diacetylmorphine, introduced in 1898 as a nonaddictive alternative to morphine by the German drug company Bayer, which also gave the world aspirin. Diacetylmorphine is better known by its trade name, Heroin. You see how well that worked out. Like traditional smokes, electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are a nicotine delivery device. The difference is that whereas the paper-and-weed variety involves burning tobacco and inhaling the smoke, e-cigarettes merely heat nicotine to produce vapor, and you breathe that — hence the vernacular term for this activity, “vaping.” An e-cigarette consists of a mouthpiece, a battery, some electronics, a filament-type heater, and a disposable cartridge containing a mix of nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin, and flavorings. When the electronics detect that the smoker has taken a drag, they switch on the heating element, warming air that’s then pulled through the cartridge, vaporizing some of the nicotine mix for easy inhaling. These things clearly have their advantages. The absence of combustion means no combustion byproducts— including tars, carbon monoxide, and other noxious chemicals — and also no risk of fires and burns. Those in the user’s vicinity don’t choke on smoke. Relatively little research has been done on e-cigarettes since their appear-

ance on the market roughly six years ago. However, while it would be foolish to say they’re harmless, studies so far suggest they’re orders of magnitude safer than conventional cigarettes. In investigating e-cigs, the FDA has focused on two types of chemicals: tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs), which are carcinogenic, and diethylene glycol (DEG), a plain old poison. E-cigarettes were found to provide a 500- to 1400-fold reduction in TSNAs compared to traditional cigarettes, and DEG was found in only one cartridge tested. Of 16 studies reviewed in 2010, none found more than trace amounts of the carcinogens typical of tobacco smoke. Nonetheless, since there’s no minimum safe level of a carcinogen, the FDA still warns against e-cigarettes. Although you’re not sucking in smoke with e-cigs, you are inhaling vapor, which can be problematic. One study I came across reported that vaping for just five minutes made breathing more difficult. The main thing, though, is that ecigarettes can help reduce or eliminate smoking, even among those not trying to quit. Researchers in Italy furnished a group of volunteer smokers with e-cigarettes, excluding anyone who was consciously trying to stop smoking and providing no encouragement to do so. Despite this, 22 of 27 participants had reduced their consumption of conventional cigarettes by at least 50 percent after six months and nine had quit altogether. Other studies have found that despite delivering minimal nicotine, e-cigarettes significantly reduce the craving to smoke. E-cigarette users we’ve talked to unanimously report the product is a passable substitute for the real thing, although some say they still smoke an occasional cigarette under peer pressure. Overall, notwithstanding my instinct that all change is for the worse, the evidence to date strongly suggests e-cigarettes beat smoking, which kills 443,000 Americans annually and is notoriously hard to stop doing. Among people who try to quit on their own, 80 percent relapse within a month. Long-term research on health impacts is needed, and no doubt breaking the nicotine habit altogether is preferable to vaping. But e-cigarettes look like a good plan B. cs By cecil adams

New music: KidSyc solo, Damon & the boys Last week, Savannah rap artist KidSyc had a burst of creative energy, the likes of which he’d never experienced. Despite writing, rapping and recording for 11 of his 27 years. He was sailing, he says, on the focused love from his “Best of Savannah” win on May 21. Along with Brandywine, the exceedingly funky jazz/R&B band he shares the stage with, KidSyc had been voted the city’s top hip hop artist. Shortly after the group’s incendiary performance at the Morris Center, for winners and their friends and families, KidSyc’s muse began whispering in his ear. She was telling him to get busy. The result is Singles, a nine-song EP KidSyc — his real name is Lloyd Harold — recorded at home in a 48-hour period, utilizing beats from a California producer named Este, a bunch of his Savannah friends singing and rapping, and his own fertile, word-association brain. Just about every rap on Singles — which became available June 1, less than a week after recording concluded — was free-styled. Improvised. Right off the top of his head. As for the title, Harold explains, “The original concept was just to try to make a bunch of singles. An album of songs that I could hear on the radio. That was kind of the drive behind creating these hooks first, and then just filling it in with these freestyle rhymes.” But experimentation, and the participation of fellow rappers like Knife, Miggs and Vanimal, was just too much fun. Everybody stayed up till dawn working on the tracks, which took on lives on their own.

john alexander

When inspiration strikes, you’d better be ready.

Hip hop king KidSyc (aka Lloyd Harold) killed it at the Best of Savannah party May 21.

KidSyc is admired for his thoughtful and intelligent rhymes — he carries a notebook around with him and is always jotting down ideas for the next project. Freestyling is something else altogether. “Now that I’m able to record at will, for the most part, it takes that notebook aspect out of it,” Harold explains. “And if I’m in the zone, so to speak, I can just be right there at the mic. I think having done it for so long, being at the Jinx and practicing for so long, honing my freestyle skills … I try to freestyle as well as I write.” Also new: KidSyc sings! Several of the new songs have curvy melodies that intertwine with the beats, the musical arrangements and the spoken sections. On his early homemade mix tapes and CDs, Harold says, “I never sang a full song. I sang on the hooks, hid it in the background by mixing it down really low, not because I was embarrassed by it but because I was so adamant about being the rapper. ‘Can’t be singing!’ “And just recently there’s been an

influx of singer-slash-rappers that have been successful, so that sound is a little more accepted. And I’m more comfortable.” Other vocalists on Singles include Britt Scott, Amelia Jamerson and Melissa Hagerty. Down the road, a full-length KidSyc solo album is planned for September, to be followed by a new collection from KidSyc@Brandywine. In the meantime, you can check out Singles at Syc’s bandcamp site, and on Soundcloud.

Kickin’ it

This week also sees the unveiling of the first album from Damon and the Shitkickers, our area’s own honkytonk outlaw country band. Short Cups and Long Nights is available via CD Baby, on amazon.com … and at the band’s shows. Speaking of the latter, Damon and the Shitkickers will celebrate the CD release June 8 with an extended version of their regular Happy Hour Saturdays gig at the Jinx. They’ll crank up at 6 p.m. and play until 10. Singer/guitarist Damon Mailand is

a luthier (guitar maker) for Benedetto Guitars here in Savannah. He arrived in town seven years ago. “I was raised in rural Montana,” Mailand says, “and grew up listening to classic country music. That’s what my mom played, so I guess it was kind of ingrained in me. My family was pretty musical — my dad played guitar, and my uncle and grandpa played fiddle, so there was always country music going on when I was growing up.” Over the years, he played guitar in classic rock bands. “But the classic country never really left my system, I guess,” Mailand says. “I got started because I would go out to the bars and stuff and couldn’t find any good classic country bands. So I started my own and took it from there.” In Savannah, “I was lucky enough to randomly run into some really good musicians. They all had a feel for what I was going for. Whether they had different backgrounds or not — and most of them did — they knew the style I played. And they added their own elements as we went.” Damon and the Shitkickers excel at the sort of brawling barroom country made legendary by the likes of Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and (to some degree) George Jones. Not a lot of rabid fan interest in that sort of stuff in a college town, I suggest to Mailand. “I thought that would be an issue, too, but we stay as busy as we want to be,” he responds. “We all have day jobs, so we only play on the weekends. And on most weekends we have two to four gigs. And we book out several months in advance. “So finding work is not a problem. And I’m sometimes surprised at some of the places we play where we get great crowds.” cs

Rock ‘n’ Roll, Stan Lee style, in Grayson Stadium by bill deyoung | bill@connectsavannah.com

From campus heroes to Internet sensations to million-selling recording artists, the guys in O.A.R. took a bumpy road to the top. These days, the hard-rocking but melodic band from Ohio State University has on its resume a four-CD live album, a Madison Square Garden sellout, and (prestigiously) a Live at Red Rocks concert DVD. Alongside seven studio albums and a shiny pair of platinum awards.

DJ BASIK LEE

They’ve done pretty well for themselves, these longtime buds from Maryland. On Saturday, June 8, O.A.R. (it stands for “Of a Revolution”) makes its Savannah debut with a concert at Grayson Stadium. They’re touring as part of comic book legend Stan Lee’s

POW! Entertainment series, benefit concerts for military personnel and their families. Lee, reportedly, was visited by several disabled Afghanistan veterans in 2012, while he was in town for the Savannah Film Festival. This inspired him to launch a series of shows with

a superhero theme — the parallels to American servicemen and women being abundantly clear. So where have you heard O.A.R. before? Perhaps it was 2008’s “Shattered (Turn the Car Around),” a smash record and oh-so-popular video. Or maybe it was “Heaven,” a thrilling pop/rock ride, from 2011? Or “Love Is Worth the Fall,” featured in one of those Twilight movies. It could have been “So Much,” written and recorded for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (they even performed it on the program, standing on a streetcorner). Or the fan favorite “That Was a Crazy Game of Poker.”

You guys have been together a long time. How do you keep from going nuts and killing each other? Marc Roberge: Honestly, we feel fortunate to be doing this. So when we’re all together on the bus, and you start to get a little antsy, maybe start being a little tough, it hits you: You’re like, listen buddy, you’re on a bus with your buddies having a good time — you should probably enjoy the ride.’ Any time something gets a little too serious, we always remind each other of that very quickly. So it isn’t that hard. Has there ever been a personnel change? Marc Roberge: As far as musicians go, there’s only been additions. It began as me and the drummer, Chris Culos, playing in the basement of his house, then Richard [On] and Benj [Gershman] came along on guitar and bass. We were in high school. We maintained through high school, put out an independent CD, and went to college with the intentions of being in a band continually. Two of us went to school, Richard transferred, Benj came the next year, we met Jerry [Depizzo, saxophone] our first year and added him to the band shortly thereafter. Then about six years ago, we auditioned for a keyboard player who could play percussion and sing. In walked Mikel Paris, and it was an instant hire. It’s more than a paid musician thing. This guy belongs with us; he’s a great guy. What did it feel like when people started buying your records and coming to your shows? What does success feel like? Marc Roberge: That’s an interesting question. It was a staggered response for me. When we first began, we pooled together a couple hundred dollars and recorded four songs. Half the performances on there were improvised on the spot. When we started selling it on tape for five bucks, around school, that was a

Your taping policy is so wide open. Was that an easy decision for you? Marc Roberge: It was an easy decision for us to allow taping and encourage it because where we developed most, where we spread our music most, was Napster. Unintentionally. We really didn’t even know, we were brand new to college and Napster was brand new. We kept getting phone calls from places like Arizona and California, far away from the east coast and the Midwest where we were at. It was through Napster, and a lot of it was the live stuff. We appreciated the Dave Matthews Band, and the Grateful Dead, and their policies regarding taping and trading, and encouraging it. We really didn’t have to make a decision. We also want to provide them with a higher quality of taping. So what we do is, we allow anyone to tape, but we also mix every single show and put it up for sale. Look, if people come and tape that stuff, if you want to, that’s cool. But if you don’t feel like setting it up, we can have it for you, and at a higher mixing quality.

How did you get involved with this Stan Lee concert series? Marc Roberge: Since the band got to touring, we’ve found a lot of connection with people in the military because they like to be around music and people who have fun. And that’s really cool. feeling of success that I don’t know we’ve even matched. Relative to that, over the course of the 15 years there’s been many times where we’ve kind of felt completely … I don’t even know the feeling, ‘cause you feel like you worked at it, but at the same time it comes as a complete surprise. That has always been a good feeling. Nowadays, we’ve just got to party and enjoy it. You’re in a rock band, you’re making songs. I just really want to enjoy it. Because I think a lot of guys take it too seriously.

Lead singer and frontman Marc Roberge gave us a call this week to chat about the band, which has been in business since 1996, and some other stuff. O.A.R., he says, is in the process of putting songs together for studio album No. 8, the followup to 2011’s staggeringly popular King.

We here at Connect aim to keep it fresh and local in all things, especially food.

But two different fast food chicken chains recently opened up around the corner from our offices and just like that, it was ON. Affinities were confessed. Allegiances emerged. Territories were declared.

Jessica Leigh Lebos fighting for Zaxby’s:

Jim, I would like to preface this by saying that eating any kind of fast food is a rare exception to the healthy habit rule strictly enforced in my family, a rule that mostly disintegrates when: A) we are on a road trip and suddenly no one likes the hummus and homemade pickles on pita I packed, B) It is 3 p.m. on deadline day and I have not eaten anything but an Altoid and three pistachios I found in the corner of my desk drawer, or C) I have raging PMS. When I fall, I usually land at Zaxby’s, because I find fast food hamburgers to be so — how do I say this — barferiffic. This is how I have come to be, so help me, torridly in love with Zaxby’s Buffalo Bleu Cheese Zalad.

Given last year’s uproar over Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy’s stance on gay marriage and the fact that both Chick-fil-A and Zaxby’s have roots in Georgia (Atlanta and Statesboro, respectively), we figured it was a worthy debate to bring to the page. Now two editors go toe-to-toe over chicken fingers. (And sandwiches. And possibly French fries.)

Jim Morekis fighting for Chick-Fil-A:

Jessica, I’m pro-gay marriage. I was pro-gay marriage waaaay before it was cool. So pro. But here’s the thing, my dear colleague, something I’ve learned the hard way: The perfect is the enemy of the good. Stand strong by your principles by all means. Don’t patronize Chick-Fil-A if you feel it’s necessary to boycott their owner’s opposition to gay marriage. But realize I have a different worldview. I seek change from within. Ninja style. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Then change their minds once inside the door. Like a Jedi Knight. A Ninja Jedi Knight that supports gay marriage. Big time.

Dan Cathy would never approve of my extramarital affair with this wide dish of crispy romaine, red cabbage and shredded carrots, topped with blue cheese crumbles and succulent cubed chicken soused in a sauce so tasty I have been known to nibble my napkin after I wipe my mouth. My indulgence is served with two triangles of buttery thick Texas toast, though I usually skip these carbs in favor of one of Zaxby’s limited edition creamed confections: On the menu this month is a Banana Pudding milkshake that cools the bite of the buffalo sauce and is best sipped slowly as it may induce a brain freeze bliss coma. A fave amongst other family members is the Zaxby’s Club Sandwich, served on the aforementioned delectable toast and accompanied by old school crinkle fries. Side options also include onion rings, always a coveted item, and spicy fried mushrooms, which can make a palate happy even when the body that the palate belongs to has been subjected to 450 miles of Interstate in one day. The kids’ meals come with apple juice or chocolate milk with no high fructose corn syrup or artificial growth hormones, so that’s one less thing to feel guilty about. Speaking of which, a rigorous scouring of the internet has not revealed even a whiff of political posturing from Zaxby’s. Though the company has employed comedienne and loud-and-proud “lover of the gays” Kathy Griffin as a spokesperson, its stance on same-sex marriage, the NRA, dolphin-assisted homebirths or any other controversy remains unknown. Unlike Chick-fil-A, which in spite of reports that it has changed its policy to no longer to donate to organizations “that promote discrimination, specifically against LGBT civil rights” and had already scaled back their giving to such groups starting in 2010, actually increased its funding in 2011 to notably anti-gay groups like the Marriage & Marriage & Family Foundation and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. According to ThinkProgress.org, Chick-fil-A’s charitable giving is “no less hateful, just less transparent.” While Chick-fil-A has changed its corporate messaging to include bland anti-discriminatory language, it is clear that the opposition to gay marriage remains within its corporate culture. Just because people can’t be fired for being gay doesn’t mean they’re welcome, Jim! Perhaps no one in the company will again make the mistake of announcing their opposition to gay marriage — and the civil rights that come with it as it made legal state-bystate (bet ya a Zaxby’s Zalad that Georgia is one of the last holdouts!) Still, just a few weeks ago, a newspaper ad in Dayton, OH offered $25 Chick-fil-A gift cards to every married, heterosexual couple that attended a May 19 event at the Cornerstone Baptist Temple honoring “biblical marriage.” We are indeed a free society, and nowhere is the power of our freedom more effective of where we choose to put our dollars. You may like the way something tastes, but there are longterm effects, and I’m not talking about the need for a TUMS. But no need for politics to muss the shiny formica table here. Zaxby’s is the obvious intelligent choice, utilizing as it does the clever literary device of replacing ‘s’s with ‘z’s on the menu rather than stoop to the level of illiterate bovines. And there’s no doubt that Zaxby’s has superior flavor, especially with a dollop of their Nuclear Sauce. cs

Jim Morekis & Chick-Fil-A (cont’d):

And once inside that door I’m pretty much gonna crush one of those delicious pressure-cooked chicken patties with waffle fries and an ice-cold Coke. What other quasi-fast food joint has such a dedicated cadre of employees, always crisp and professional, always well-scrubbed, always eager to serve those perfect, signature chicken patties with a smile? I mean — isn’t that a testament to something good? Jessica, meet me at camera three.... Just between you and me, you know damn well some of those well-scrubbed highschoolers behind the counter at our friendly neighborhood Chick-Fil-A are gayer than all get out. Who are we to deny our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters their chance at a good job with the employer of their choosing? Hmmmmmm? Where is this? RUSSIA? And by “Russia” I mean the FORMER SOVIET UNION! And who cannot admire Chick-Fil-A for closing on Sundays out of respect for the faith of (most) of their customers and workers? Granted, Sunday is not everyone’s Sabbath. And granted, Judaism, not the Christianity of Chick-Fil-A’s owners, seems correct on this issue. Simple math tells us if God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, then Saturday is the only Sabbath that makes sense, not Sunday. But I digress. Isn’t it a symbol of basic integrity that by closing on Sunday, Chick-Fil-A deliberately trades profit for principle? I mean — have you been to a Chick-Fil-A lately? They’re packed! It’s a license to print money. Each Chick-Fil-A is like a little Federal Reserve Bank. A delightful little Federal Reserve Bank trimmed in red which prints money and cranks out delicious chicken sandwiches garnished with little pickles sliced just so. Do you have any idea of the crap ton of money Chick-FilA forfeits, purposely, by closing one day a week nationwide? Be that as it may. For me, gay marriage isn’t just a matter of social equality. It’s a simple follow-through on the basic premises of liberty our country was founded upon. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. All men (women) are created equal. No one can freakin’ deny my right to pursue a boatload of lightly-breaded happiness in eating a wonderful Chick-Fil-A sandwich. Any time I want. Except on Sunday. So let me eat my Chick-Fil-A, Jessica. Let me eat it because I’m at liberty to do so. As I’m at liberty to support gay marriage, which the owners of Chick-Fil-A do not. Liberty. Love it or leave it! The other key precept at play here is the central teaching of all major religions: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The Golden Rule. So do unto me as I would do unto you, Jessica. I’ll let you eat your Zaxby’s all day. But you will pry my Chick-Fil-A Original Chicken Sandwich out of my hand when you pry my cold dead fingers from around it. cs

I daresay that making the entire Grand Canyon disappear would be an easier feat of magic than trying to whip the screenplay for Now You See Me into something remotely logical. The theme of the movie is misdirection — the magician’s practice of making audiences focus on something while the real trick is taking place away from the center of attention — and that notion has seeped into every aspect of the production.

A terrific cast, a promising trailer, a zippy pace, glitzy locales — all of that is merely meant to distract us from noticing that the movie itself is nothing more than an empty spectacle hopelessly riddled with gaping plotholes, narrative coincidences and a final twist that couldn’t have been more preposterous had it revealed that Chewbacca was actually Luke’s father. For a while, the film delivers on its promise of a good time. Four magicians of differing popularity perform acts of magic, either for the amusement of audiences or for themselves. J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) is the most successful of the bunch, first seen showing off his skills with a nifty card trick. Then there’s Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher), whose act involves being dumped into a tank of piranha. Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson) is largely a hasbeen, a mentalist who now employs his skill to bilk money out of folks with unsavory secrets. At the bottom is Jack Wilder (Dave Franco), the rookie who’s still performing con jobs at street level. All four accept the invitation of an unknown person to gather at a certain location; cut to a year later, and we now see that the quartet has formed a world-class outfit known as the Four Horsemen, playing to massive audiences under the sponsorship of the wealthy Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine in a role that makes absolutely no

sense). Their gig in Las Vegas is a doozy: They teleport a Frenchman to his bank in Paris and return him with a vaultful of Euros in tow, all of which are rained down upon the crowd. This Robin Hood act doesn’t sit well with Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo), an FBI agent who doesn’t like to see anybody fleeced. Forced to team up with an Interpol agent named Alma Dray (Melanie Laurent), he works hard to not only nab the team but also debunk their tricks — to help him with the latter, he turns to Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman), a former magician who has made a name for himself exposing trade secrets. The opening portion of Now You See Me works so well because it focuses exclusively on the four tricksters, who are all interesting characters whether working alone or sharing the screen. The Vegas show and its aftermath are also riveting, as Thaddeus patiently explains the act to a frustrated Rhodes. But after this point, the screenplay by Ed Solomon, Boaz Yakin and Edward Ricourt spirals wildly out of control, with the emphasis taking a hard right away from its intriguing angle and settling into a more standard cat-andmouse pursuit, one that’s capped by an endless car chase filled with inconsistencies and illogical diversions. Indeed, the ludicrous nature of this sequence is representative of much of the film. Working under director Louis Leterrier (the Clash of the Titans remake), the writers go beyond forgetting to dot their i’s and cross their t’s — their script is ofttimes so sloppily constructed that it’s the equivalent of also

leaving off periods and confusing your and you’re. This is one of those films where the plot can only progress if characters perform a specific act at a specific time, or where one unanticipated reaction from a peripheral character (say, the agent played by Michael J. Kelly) would unravel all the plans, or where one component of the master scheme has a 50-50 chance of killing innocent people (that would shift audience allegiance in a hurry, wouldn’t it?) It all culminates with the unmasking of the person who brought together the Four Horsemen — whether you guessed it or not, it leads to a mental replaying of the movie that makes it even more daft and gaffe-riddled. To add to the stuffing, there are also discussions of the Eye of Horus, a real-life symbol from ancient Egypt. It’s clumsily interjected into the proceedings, but while it’s perhaps meant to be a Hitchcockian MacGuffin, it’s more like a McNugget, adding little nutrition or value to a disappointing movie whose promise vanishes as quickly as that rabbit in the box.

AFTER EARTH

OP

This nepotism thing can sometimes be a real bitch. When Winona Ryder backed out of The Godfather: Part III due to exhaustion, Francis Coppola cast his daughter Sofia in the pivotal role, and her wretched performance kept that movie off-balance for its entire running time. George Lucas allowed his young son Jett to name a character in the Star Wars prequels, and he came up with Jar Jar Binks (no

confirmation on who named Count Dooku, which as many have noted sounds like something you’d find in a baby’s diaper). Emma Roberts (Julia’s niece), Tori Spelling (Aaron’s daughter), Patrick Wayne (John’s son) — all performers of minimal talent whose Hollywood presence can be credited to their lineage. With After Earth, Will Smith and his son Jaden seem to be heading down this precipitous path. While Will was clearly the lead in their previous joint effort, The Pursuit of Happyness, he made it clear that he wanted his young son to share the superstar spotlight in this new film — no longer as dicey a proposition for studios, given the huge success of Jaden’s Karate Kid remake. But After Earth is simply a bad movie, and while it probably won’t damage Big Willy’s A-list standing, it stands to potentially halt little Jaden’s momentum right in its tracks. Like this spring’s disappointing Oblivion, this stillborn drama is set in a future in which the planet Earth has been rendered uninhabitable by alien invaders (called Ursas) and everyone still alive is now living in outer-space colonies far, far away. The imaginatively named Cypher Raige (the senior Smith) is a legend because, like Daredevil, he was born without fear and is thus able to slaughter Ursas at, uh, will. His son Kitai (the junior Smith), on the other hand, is frightened of the alien monsters, particularly since he saw one rip apart his sister (Zoe Kravitz) at a younger age. So when their spaceship crashes on Earth and Cypher’s broken legs render him immobile, it’s up to the lad to make his way across the treacherous landscape to locate the craft’s tail end and a rescue beacon. For a science fiction feature, After Earth proves to be anemic in both concept and execution. An ample amount of important exposition is missing, and even what’s promised on screen isn’t delivered. When a character notes that Earth is now overrun by all manner of frightening creatures hellbent on killing humans, we tingle at the possibilities. So what do we get? A tarantula, an eagle, several tigers and a bunch of baboons. Even more than a science fiction spectacle, this film registers as a father-son tale — and a rather dreary one at that. Working from a story suggested by Will Smith, director M.

Night Shyamalan (whose career continues to plummet at Mach speed) and co-scripter Gary Whitta (who also penned the underrated futuristic saga The Book of Eli) fail to establish any sort of believable rapport between their central characters — amazing considering they’re related in real life. Will Smith is of course one of our most charismatic performers, and it’s more of a waste than a stretch for him to play such a dull, dry character who exhibits all the charm of a recycling bin.

FAST & FURIOUS 6

OOP

Generally speaking, any series that has managed to make its way to a sixth installment is running solely on fumes, but that’s not the case with the Fast & Furious brand. This wildly inconsistent franchise seems to rise and fall on whenever the muse randomly hits its creators, which may be often (2011’s series-best Fast 5), inconsistently (the 2001 original, The Fast and the Furious) or not at all (2003’s wince-inducing 2 Fast 2 Furious). Place Fast & Furious 6 (or simply Furious 6, as it’s called on screen) toward the front of the assembly line: It may not be quite as satisfying a ride as its immediate predecessor, but with its cast of series notables, slam-bang action sequences and even a narrative surprise or two, it largely delivers the goods while also nicely setting up July 2014’s Fast & Furious 7. Yes, there will be a seventh entry, and that’s really no more of a spoiler than the fact that F&F6 features the return of Michelle Rodriguez to the lineup. Anyone who remained seated (or at least perched at the exit) during Fast Five’s end credits witnessed federal agent Luke Dobbs (Dwayne Johnson) learn that Letty Ortiz (Rodriguez), the presumably dead girlfriend/partner-in-crime of car thief Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), was still alive and stealing. F&F6 picks up with that storyline, as it’s revealed that, for reasons that soon become apparent, Letty is now working for a ruthless weapons-dealing mercenary named Shaw (Luke Evans).

Star Trek Into Darkness

OOOP

One of the posters for Star Trek Into Darkness depicts a damaged Enterprise free-falling toward the planet below it, but any worries that J.J. Abrams’ series reboot will experience a similar tumble with this second installment can immediately be laid to rest. While it doesn’t quite reach the giddy heights of its 2009 predecessor, this new picture is terrific popcorn entertainment, the sort of bright, brawny blockbuster that used to define the summer movie season. What Abrams and his writers (Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman on the first picture, Orci, Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof on this one) are accomplishing with Gene Roddenberry’s brainchild mirrors a tightrope act performed with exquisite delicacy and balance. They’ve managed to embrace the Star Trek canon while also expanding it, expertly weaving together elements that will appease the Trekkie faithful while also making the property more friendly toward the uninitiated. Don’t understand the references to Harry Mudd and Tribbles? No matter, since there’s more than enough exposition, action and humor to otherwise engage the senses. Having introduced an alternatetimeline scenario in the previous picture, Abrams and company charge full steam ahead, opening with an Indiana Jones-like sequence that will inform many of the scenarios unfolding throughout the picture. Chief among them is the tension between James Kirk (Chris Pine), who hasn’t met a Starfleet regulation he can’t break, and Spock (Zachary Quinto), whose adherence to the rules taxes not only Kirk but also Uhura (Zoe Saldana), who’s learning that it’s not always easy dating a Vulcan. But personal issues take a back seat once a terrorist attack decimates a London building; the culprit is one John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), and Admiral Marcus (Peter Weller) orders the Enterprise crew to follow Harrison into the heart of darkness - his hideout deep in the Klingon zone - and terminate him with extreme prejudice.

The Great Gatsby

OOP

Baz Luhrmann, known for his musicality, unique vision and radical

departures from tradition in earlier films like Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge, serves it lukewarm and dialed in for Gatsby. In this flick, he misses an opportunity to draw out parallels to modernity and comes across as a cover band director, someone whose celebrated directorial ambitions coattail the mastery of others who came before him. Luhrmann’s only addition was the invented frame bookending the story with a psychiatrist in a mental ward, which is the most played-out cliché in the history of storytelling. Or maybe he just gave the people what they wanted. For the most part, the plot sticks doggedly enough to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s enduring masterpiece of the same name; a story detailing the pratfalls of opulence, the lies we tell ourselves, the hopeful bravery of selfdelusional love and a mysterious man named Jay Gatbsy. Tobey Macguire assumes the role of quintessentially unreliable narrator Nick Carraway, a midwesterner who moves to Long Island only to play voyeur to a moneyed crew of acquaintances, driven by self-serving motivations, infidelities and unreachable expectations. The rest of the cast shines hi-gloss surface appeal. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as leading lady Daisy Buchanan, the classic foil for Helen of Troy. Add the beady eyes of Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan and Isla Fisher’s accent as Myrtle Wilson, and it’s safe to say everyone looks the part. Pivotal scenes at the Plaza and Tom Buchanan’s Manhattan apartment are arguably stand-alone shorts, something Luhrmann’s been focusing on as of late. Sadly, a good film demands to be more than a series of shorts. As far as page-to-screen adaptations go, this one falls unbearably short; a flaccid and faltering homage to literary greatness. The Great Gatbsy is a lackluster non-departure that leaves anyone with a fair to middling intelligence quotient wishing they’d stayed home, bought the soundtrack (featureing Lana Del Ray, Jay-Z, Fergie, Beyonce, Jack White in haunting renditions of covers and jazzed originals alike) and curled up with the book. — Jenny Dunn

ARIES

The longest natural arch in the world is the Fairy Bridge in Guangxi Province, China. Made of limestone, this 400-foot-wide span crosses over the Buliu River. No one outside of China knew about it until 2009, when an American explorer spied it on Google Earth. Let’s make the Fairy Bridge your metaphor of the month, Aries. Judging by the astrological omens, I suspect there’s a good chance you will soon find something like a natural, previously hidden bridge. In other words, be alert for a link between things you didn’t know were connected.

barrier was eventually policed by armed guards. Traffic between the two Berlins became virtually impossible for the next 28 years. Then a miracle occurred: East German authorities relinquished their stranglehold. They tentatively allowed East Berliners to travel to West Berlin. Soon the *Mauerspechte,* or “wall woodpeckers,” showed up. Armed with hammers and chisels, these people began chipping away at the Wall. Two years later, most of it had been demolished. I hereby assign you to be a wall woodpecker in your own sphere, Cancer. The time is right to demolish a barricade. It may take a while, but you’re ready to start.

TAURUS

LEO

(March 21-April 19)

(April 20-May 20) I hope that in recent weeks you’ve made yourself a master of sticky and intricate details. I trust you’ve been working harder and smarter than you have in a long time. Have you, Taurus? Have you been grunting and sweating a lot, exerting yourself in behalf of good causes? Please tell me you have. And please say you’re willing to continue for a while longer. The way I see it, your demanding tasks aren’t quite finished. In fact, the full reward for your efforts may not become available unless you keep pushing beyond the point that you consider to be your fair share.

GEMINI

(May 21-June 20) How free do you want to be, Gemini? A tiny bit free, hemmed in by comfortable complications that require you to rely on white lies? Or would you rather be moderately free in ways that aren’t too demanding -- politely, sensibly free? Maybe you feel brave and strong enough to flirt with a breathtaking version of liberation -- a pure, naked freedom that brings you close to the edge of wild abandon and asks you to exercise more responsibility than you’re used to. I’m not telling you which kind you should opt for, but I am suggesting that it’s best if you do make a conscious choice.

CANCER

(June 21-July 22) In August 1961, the Communist government of East Germany built the Berlin Wall. It was a thick concrete barrier designed to prevent the oppressed citizens of East Berlin from escaping to freedom in West Berlin. The

(July 23-Aug. 22) The following slogan captures the spirit I bring to composing my horoscopes: “I live in the future so that you don’t have to.” But right now this slogan doesn’t apply to you. From what I can tell, you are currently visiting the future as much as I do. Here’s what I wonder, though: Are you timetraveling simply to run away from the dilemmas that face you in the present? Or are you taking advantage of your jaunts to acquire revelations that will help you solve those dilemmas once you return?

VIRGO

(Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You know that there are different kinds of stress, right? Some varieties wear you out and demoralize you, while other kinds of stress excite and motivate you. Some lead you away from your longterm goals, and others propel you closer. The coming weeks would be an excellent time for you to fine-tune your ability to distinguish between them. I suspect that the more you cultivate and seek out the good kind, the less susceptible you’ll be to the bad kind.

LIBRA

(Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Studies show that people spend 87 percent of their time inside buildings and six percent in enclosed vehicles. In other words, they are roaming around outside enjoying the wind and sky and weather for only seven percent of their lives. I think you’re going to have to do better than that in the coming week, Libra. To ensure your mental hygiene stays robust, you should try to expose yourself to

the natural elements at least nine percent of the time. If you manage to hike that rate up to ten percent or higher, you stand a good chance of achieving a spiritual epiphany that will fuel you for months.

SCORPIO

(Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Resurrection is the Scorpionic specialty. Better than any other sign of the zodiac, you can summon the power to be reborn. It is your birthright to reanimate dreams and feelings and experiences that have expired, and make them live again in new forms. Your sacred totem is the mythical phoenix, which burns itself in a fire of its own creation and then regenerates itself from the ashes. Now here’s the big news headline, Scorpio: I have rarely seen you in possession of more skill to perform these rites than you have right now.

SAGITTARIUS

bring this up, Capricorn, because I suspect it’ll be a *minced oath* kind of week for you. What I mean is: You’ll have every right to get riled up, and you should express your feelings, but not in ways that create problems for you.

AQUARIUS

(Jan. 20-Feb. 18) There’s only one correct way to spell the English word “beauty.” But that wasn’t true centuries ago. Before the advent of the printing press, orthographic anarchy prevailed for many words. Some of beauty’s variations included bewte, beaute, beaultye, beuaute, bealte, buute, bewtee, and beaultye. I bring this up, Aquarius, because I think it would be fun and healthy for you to take a respite from having to slavishly obey standardized rules. I’m talking about not just those that apply to spelling, but others, too. See what you can get away with.

(Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

PISCES

Octavio Paz spoke to a lover in his poem “Counterparts”: “In my body you search the mountain for the sun buried in its forest. In your body I search for the boat adrift in the middle of the night.” What have you searched for in the bodies of your lovers, Sagittarius? What mysteries and riddles have you explored while immersed in their depths? How has making love helped you to better understand the meaning of life? I invite you to ruminate on these uncanny joys. Remember the breakthroughs that have come your way thanks to sex. Exult in the spiritual education you have received through your dealings with lust and sensuality. And then go out and stir up some fresh epiphanies.

In the last chapter of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel *The Brothers Karamazov,* the lead character says the following: “There is nothing nobler, stronger, healthier, and more helpful in life than a good remembrance, particularly a remembrance from childhood. A beautiful, holy memory preserved from childhood can be the single most important thing in our development.” I bring this up, Pisces, so as to get you in the right frame of mind for this week’s featured activity: remembrance. One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is to reminisce about the old days and the old ways. To do so will enhance your physical health and purify your emotional hygiene.

CAPRICORN

(Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Do you know what minced oaths are? They’re rarely used anymore. If you went back a hundred years, though, you’d hear them regularly. They were sanitized swear words, basically; peculiar exclamations that would allow people the emotional release of profanities without causing a ruckus among those who were listening. “Bejabbers!” was one. So were “thunderation! and “dadblast!” and “consarn!” Here’s one of my favorite minced oaths: “By St. Boogar and the saints at the backside door of purgatory!” I
