Unearthing Ossabaw THE SLAVES WHO LIVED on the northern end of Ossabaw Island for more than a hundred years are silent now.

When you stroll the tree-shrouded dirt lanes of the isolated barrier island past the three tabby cabins remaining from the slave settlement, the only sound you hear is the squawking of the occasional bird, the grunt of a wild boar in the distance, or the sea breeze blowing lazily through the Spanish moss.

But for a small team of archaeologists turning over the earth on Ossabaw, the voices of the long-dead slaves cry out more loudly every day.

Last month, project head Dan Elliott and his team added the sound of their digging tools to the growing din on Ossabaw. With each turn of the shovel and scrape of the trowel, Elliott and his assistants uncover more surprising traces of the long-vanished AfricanAmerican community.

Things like ammunition and pieces of guns — items you wouldn’t expect an eighteenth- or nineteenth-century slave to possess. The earth has also yielded up shards of elegant pottery, and fancy buttons and toys. Clearly, we have much to learn about these early inhabitants of Ossabaw Island.

The slaves came to Ossabaw to work on John Morel’s North End indigo plantation in the 1760s.

“We don’t know what part of Africa they came from,” Elliott laments. “We do know that in the 1780s a British ship came and took them away.”

Morel’s family brought more slaves to the island and continued working the soil for another century. Eventually, the island became the summer retreat of the wealthy Torrey family.

The scion of that family, Eleanor Torrey-West, opened the island up to students, artists, and researchers through her private foundation, then sold Ossabaw to the state of Georgia in 1978.

Elliott and his team are doing at the site of the North End slave community. More than 200 other archaeological sites dot the 26,000-acre island six miles southeast of Savannah, including other slave and plantation structures and some Indian mounds.

The slave builders formed the walls of their cabins with oyster shells discarded by Native Americans hundreds, even thousands, of years before. An ancient deer jawbone and a piece of prehistoric pottery jut out of a tabby wall at one site on the island.

Three tabby cabins dating to the 1840s are all that remains of the original North End Plantation slave settlement, but Elliott’s shovel tests have revealed traces of a much larger neighborhood.

“What we’ve discovered is there’s a whole world underground,” Elliott explains.

“They’re basically the tip of the iceberg of what’s here.”

Elliott believes a group of several more cabins may have once stood on the site. A more thorough search using ground penetrating radar is now underway to determine what remains of this oncethriving community.

The radar functions like an X-ray, allowing archaeologists to see traces of Using a screen to sift through soil that has been excavated foundations and walls that are buried beneath the soil.

Elliott adds, "we’re in the early stages of discovery. We don’t really know what’s here."

The radar device did not come cheap. When pressed on the cost, Elliott replies simply that it “cost more than my first house.”

But it can save countless man-hours of digging in the wrong place.

The funding for the continuing work on Ossabaw is provided by a foundation created by the late president of Coca-Cola, the National Park Service, and private donors including Sandra Bullock.

In all, more than a million dollars is set aside to pay for the research. The work could yield priceless information about a group of Americans who were most often unable to write down their stories — and whose possessions were usually lost to the ravages of time.

“We’ll figure out who was here,” Elliott says. “We may not be able to figure out their names, but we will figure out what their lives were like and the contribution they made to America.” ◗

The parental odyssey of the Rev. Steve Schulte THE REV. STEVE SCHULTE ALWAYS wanted children.

“Always, always, always,” said the pastor of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Thunderbolt.

But at age 22, when he realized he was gay, he put the dream aside.

It resurfaced six years ago. That’s when Schulte started volunteering through the church at juvenile court.

When that committee dissolved, Schulte was asked to join the citizen’s panel review, a similar group at juvenile court.

By that time, Schulte, more settled in Savannah, comfortable with his church and more aware of the number of troubled youth in the area, started taking the Model Approach to Parenting (MAP) through the Department of Family and Children Services (DFACS).

For three months, he and others met once a week for three hours. MAP is a prerequisite to adopting a child.

Schulte passed the course. So did his comfortable home in Thunderbolt.

But when he told the woman from DFACS he was gay, she picked up her purse and ended the interview, saying something like, “It wouldn’t be appropriate for a child to be with a single man.”

Schulte, who has headed the church for 10 years, went back to birthing, baptizing and marrying his parishioners. And he continued serving on the citizen’s panel review.

Two years later, the woman who denied his application appeared on a case before the panel.

“After the meeting I approached her,” said Schulte, “and told her who I was.

Then I asked, ‘If I’m good enough to serve on this panel to recommend to a judge if so-and-so should be able to keep a child, then why wouldn’t I be good enough to be a parent?’”

Last November, Schulte transferred him from Coastal Middle School to Royce Learning Center, which has been a great fit, Schulte said.

“He’s bright. He remembers everything he reads. But there are gaps.

When his teacher gave him a thank you note, written in cursive, and I asked him to read it, I learned he couldn’t read or write cursive.

“He also -- and this is part of the Asperger’s -- doesn’t have any facial expressions. So last summer I bought a chart with all kinds of smiles. We’re working on that,” Schulte said.

“This is definitely the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. More than becoming a pastor.”

Since then, Andrew has joined the GCat swim team, where he swims four times a week, and taken several trips to visit Schulte’s family in Ohio.

The final adoption process was a breeze. But not before Schulte raised two issues. First, his name.

“I asked him if he wanted to change it and he said yes. That night I was talking to my grandmother and I learned my great-grandfather’s name was Andrew.”

Then there was the gay thing.

“The second time we met I told him I was gay,” Schulte said. “I said, ‘You may have two dads but you’ll never have a dad and a mom. He said that was OK. ‘And kids may make fun of you.’ He said they make fun of him now.”

Then Schulte recalled an incident from school.

“Andrew had overheard someone say two girls were gay, that he couldn’t help but break in and say, ‘No, they’re not.

They’re lesbians. Guys are gay. I know because my dad’s gay.’

“That’s pretty cool, don’t you think?” ◗

America still hasn’t learned its lesson about war Editor, After reading Richard R. DiPirro's column concerning the demeaning of the sacrifice and professionalism of a proud Marine Corps (“Straight talk from a former Marine”), I was struck to see a familiarity in its tone.

About six months earlier, I had spoken for a long time on the phone with my father, who was a Marine and served proudly in Okinawa during WWII. He, too, thought the war we are now fighting was for naught.

He, too, said that our children are being maimed and slaughtered for many wrong reasons... mostly just plain selfish ones. He told me that the egos of many of our fine government officials needed to be stroked, and that we, in the end, would find ourselves in a quagmire like no other.

I suppose the United States can now pride itself on being the supreme being in spreading democracy throughout a troubled world. I do give President Bush credit for getting Saddam Hussein out of the way and wanting to help the Iraqis.

However, I think what we have done to our own children in the military, for the sake of democracy, is a sin.

We can't even clean up the corruption, greed, rotten public education system, miserable welfare and health system of our own country. Yet, somehow, we want the rest of the world to see us as its savior.

We need to take a long, hard look at ourselves in the mirror... every single one of us.

God bless all of our troops over there. May God bring them back to us, where they belong, very soon.

Columnist is a ‘pinko’ Editor, The most demeaning aspect of the war in Iraq is when Generation Y, snotnosed little brats come back and complain about being in uniform. When they joined the armed forces, what did they think they were going to be doing, nursing babies or delivering flowers?

The armed forces are designed to conduct war and kill people, not go on Club Med vacations. As a taxpayer, I want our armed forces to do this job as efficiently as possible, and it’s a hell of a lot better to be killing Muslim terrorists over there than it is to react to their random murder sprees over here.

Back in the 1940’s there were sniveling, liberal anti-war protestors too.

And if they had their way, we would all be speaking German or Japanese. Now we have the same kind of people complaining about the horrors of war.

Clue in, bleeding heart -- war is always terrible, but it is required to prevent further violence, keep America free, and help the human race evolve out of the sadistic form that fascist, Muslim terrorists now represent.

Richard DiPirro and the rest of us have our First Amendment rights through war and violence. Does he believe that the victims of the World Trade Center were Nazis like the some of his other little, snot-nosed liberal friends?

And who is this corporate America he refers to, the bum who made his first 100 grand or 50 grand? Guess what pinko, the Bush administration never told a lie: unless you missed the news about the genocide of thousands of Kurds through poisonous gas.

History will show that current President Bush will be regarded as one of the finest presidents since Truman. So put that in your nose and blow it.

• DURING THE ST. PATRICK’S DAY celebrations a man was observed walking along East River Street with a neon beer sign wrapped in a brown leather jacket. An officer who was patrolling the area on foot asked him what it was and the man responded, “A light.” He asked the man where he got the sign and the man named a nearby bar. The officer asked the owner of the bar if he was missing a sign and the owner named the beer sign in question. He told the officer the man and his companions tried to buy the sign from him, but he said it was not for sale. The owner said he wanted to press charges. The sign was returned to the owner and the suspect was taken to the River Street command post for processing, transported to jail.

gave a false name and birth date when questioned. He was charged with underage drinking and obstruction by giving false information and taken to jail.

• While working off duty at a Gen. McIntosh Boulevard hotel, several officers observed a man and woman on a hotel balcony kissing and groping each other. The couple was asked to “take it in the room” several times, but refused. Two officers went up to the room and the couple exited the room just as the officers reached the door. When an officer commented about her conduct, the woman became defiant, then very loud and disorderly. She began to walk away and refused several requests to stop. The officers had to physically stop her. She was advised to quiet down or she would be arrested, at which point she got in an officer’s face and yelled, “Well, then, take me to f--king jail!” At this time, she was arrested for disorderly conduct. While waiting in the hotel lobby for transportation, the woman continued to be disorderly. She was taken to jail. ◗

Even the Losers Get Lucky Vivienne, an interactive companion accessible on powerful, “third-generation” cell phones, was recently introduced by the Hong Kong company Artificial Life as a high-maintenance, video-image “girlfriend” who goes on dates with you, kisses, speaks six languages, converses on 35,000 topics, accepts flowers and diamonds, and may even marry you (though you also acquire a troublesome mother-in-law). Vivienne so far is prudish (no nudity, no sex), owing to Artificial Life’s aim at marketing in modest cultures, but she will appear in Europe and some U.S. cities by the end of this year (at about $6 a month plus airtime). Missing the Point: In January, Richard Graybill, 42, pleaded guilty in Chester County, Pa., to unauthorized use of a vehicle. He had taken a car that had been parked, awaiting repairs, at a shopping center, but he was later discovered by the car’s owner when he happened to pull up to the drive-thru window at the Wendy’s restaurant where she worked. She confronted him, and he sped away, but he returned a few minutes later and tried to persuade her to sign over the title to him, in that he had put a lot of effort into fixing the car up after he took it.

Richard Arredondo, 18, and two pals had to be rescued by sheriff’s personnel in California’s San Bernardino National Forest on Feb. 5 after getting lost while mountain biking; on Feb. 6, they went back in to retrieve their bikes, but again got lost and had to be rescued.

Finer Points of Law In June 2004, Beth Rice and Stanley Blacker of Florida held a lavish wedding weekend in Las Vegas, before friends and family, said their vows, exchanged rings, with a rabbi presiding, in a traditional Jewish wedding. They came home, moved in together, and opened a joint bank account. However, according to a January report in the St. Petersburg Times, the couple purposely failed to get a marriage license. As a result, a judge ruled in January that under Florida law, Rice had not “re-married” and that her ex-husband must continue to honor the couple’s divorce settlement and pay her $5,000 a month. ◗

More Ironies: A large portion of the materials on plagiarism on the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s Writing Center Web site was revealed in February to have been taken verbatim from Purdue University’s Web page on plagiarism. (2) And a February report from the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB), grading federal departments and agencies on five administrative performance criteria, concluded that the second-worst-performing agency was OMB. The Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, in a cost-cutting move in the wake of its priest-sexual-abuse settlement, announced in 2004 that it would close several churches and schools, including Our Lady of the Presentation in the struggling neighborhood of Oak Square.

The ongoing retreat of Himalayan glaciers due to global warming threatens to cause acute water shortages for hundreds of millions of people in Asia, according to a report by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Himalayan glaciers feed seven of Asia’s greatest rivers — the Ganges, Brahmaputra, Indus, Salween, Mekong, Yangtze and Yellow rivers — bringing a year-round supply of water to the majority of people living in the Indian subcontinent, parts of China and Southeast Asia. The WWF report says the glacial melt will first cause widespread flooding, which will be followed in a few decades by a decline in river flows.

Western Mexico’s Volcano of Fire erupted with fountains of lava during the latest in a series of colorful eruptions near Colima. A large volcanic explosion sent clouds of hot gasses cascading down several ravines on the mountain.

Ash and rocks from the blast fell in the nearby communities of Mazos and Jalisco.

• Mexico’s famed Popocatepetl Volcano sent hot ash and lava down its slopes, igniting fires near the town of San Nicolas de los Ranchos.

Earthquakes Two separate quakes that rocked eastern Turkey’s Bingol province damaged hundreds of houses in 24 villages. More than 30 people were injured by the tremors.

• Strong aftershocks continued to rock the Sumatra-Andaman Island aftershock zone as seismologists warned that another major earthquake may soon strike the same area devastated by the Dec. 26 temblor and subsequent tsunami.

• Earth movements were also felt in southern Sumatra, western India’s Maharashtra state, East Java, northern and central New Zealand, islands around the Celebes Sea, Japan’s Hokkaido Island and southeast Iran.

Elephant Poaching Sudan’s army is being accused of slaughtering large numbers of elephants in the strife-torn south of the country, as well as in other unstable areas of Africa. A report by the Britishbased Care for the Wild International says Sudanese army and pro-government militias had virtually invaded Garamba National Park in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where “the killing of elephants is out of control.” Esmond Martin, a noted elephant researcher with the group, said: “The poachers are mainly members of the Sudanese army who possess the necessary firearms and ammunition ... and have access to government transport to move tusks.” China is said to be the largest importer of illegal tusks despite a ban on ivory trade by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in 1990.

Tropical Cyclones Cyclone Ingrid made three separate landfalls during a weeklong passage across northern Australia. After drenching Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula, the storm gathered strength over the Gulf of Carpentaria and ripped the roofs off houses and flung trees into other buildings across the Tiwi Islands, north of Darwin. Ingrid’s last landfall flattened the Faraway Bay ecotourism resort on Western Australia’s Kimberly coast.

• Cyclone Willy made an arc around northwestern Australia as a threat mainly to shipping lanes.

• Typhoon Roke roared ashore near the central Philippine city of Tacloban. At least five people died due to the storm’s floods and winds.

Thai Drought A protracted drought in parts of Southeast Asia has become so acute that it is likely to slow Thailand’s economic growth this year. Thailand is the world’s eighth-largest exporter of agricultural products, and has long been the world’s leading exporter of rice. The interior ministry’s disaster management unit says 63 of Thailand’s 76 provinces are currently suffering from the drought, which is affecting about 9.2 million people. Plans for combating the drought range from diverting more water from the Mekong River before it flows into Cambodia and Vietnam to cloud seeding with a technique patented by Thailand’s king.

Baboon Raids Pilfering of crops by marauding baboons in eastern Uganda has become so frequent and costly that parents have begun keeping their children out of school to help guard the fields. Officials say that 85 percent of school-age children in the district of Busia are staying home due to the threat of baboon raids on farms and gardens. The speaker of Busia’s local legislature, John Mulimba, told reporters that teachers were also staying at home to guard their crops against the hungry primates. The district is seeking help from the Uganda Wildlife Authority in dealing with the baboons, and farmers are being told they should protect their crops by planting thorny trees around gardens and fields.◗

This brief anecdote is a telling one, and actually offers plenty of pertinent info about the songwriter.

For one thing, she an out lesbian in a field where that’s still (strangely) more than a bit taboo.

For another, she spends most of her time on the road, playing wherever she can, and is slowly building a devoted following of diehard fans – the kind who’re more than happy to put in a good word for you at a swank inn.

And finally, despite the fact that her latest record sounds like a million bucks, she apparently hasn’t got a pot to piss in.

Such is life for a struggling rock musician – even one as talented and connected as she.

A classically-trained vocalist who studied opera for years (her mother was a respected opera singer herself), she learned early on that she had a set of pipes to rival most anyone you’ll meet – male or female – and certainly most rock singers in bar bands. That training has served her well, as she maintains an amazing control over both her vocal power and phrasing. No slouch when it comes to self-improvement, she continues to take professional voice lessons in how to properly sing rock music – a sign she plans to be in this field for the long haul.

continued from page 17 Her current band has been with her since Christmas of 2002, and is featured on her latest CD, Suburban Sprawl And Alcohol, an impressive – if uneven – release that at times feels more like a collection of great radio singles than a cohesive album.

Given that said tunes run the gamut from hyper, No Doubt-style pop-rock to the kind of lush, dreamy AOR one expects from Aimee Mann, it’s no surprise L.P. gets a lot of guff from cigarchomping record biz toadies who wish she’d pick one approach and stick with it.

The refreshingly blunt New Yorker remains insouciantly unfazed.

“I get all kinds of shit from managers and label guys who tell me I’m all over the place and they don’t know how to market me. I just tell ‘em to get out of my face. That’s just lazy and ignorant, and I don’t have time for that bullshit.”

The one thing she does have time for are her fans – some of which know her strictly for her own work, and some who found her through her longstanding association with alt.rock darlings Cracker. She belted out a couple of unforgettable backing vocal parts on that group’s great 1998 release Gentlemen’s Blues that are often mistakenly attributed to another soulful shouter from the Big Apple – Joan

Osborne – and L.P. occasionally opens for (and sits in with) the cult group on tour.

“The only thing I’ve discovered for myself that’s real,” she enthuses, “is being on the road and playing shows...Talking to people after the show and selling records to people by yourself, and accumulating those fans on your own.”

She says that although her career is just starting to take off, she’s determined to build up a loyal fanbase the oldfashioned way: through relentless touring and shooting straight with her audience.

“Any time I’ve ever fallen back for some reason and needed somebody to catch me, I’ve pretty much broken my ass,” she admits. “But with this band, I’ve finally got the right bunch of people who want to stick with this for the right reasons, and we’re making it work.”

“I always wanted to be part of a real band and not be propped up by a buncha studio guys. I hate that shit.” ◗

Savannah Music Festival Picks by Jim Reed

AS WE ENTER THE SECOND WEEK of the 2005 Savannah Music Festival, it’s already obvious this year’s roster of artists is a stone gas. Here at Connect, we’ve already touched on this in earlier issues - such as our recent cover story on Sunday’s live taping of the popular classical radio show From The Top (if you missed that one, you can always access our archives online at connectsavannah.com) – but there’s no shortage of world-class shows.

Here then are our suggestions for a few "can’t miss" gigs that are worth every penny, and which folks will likely be talking about for quite some time to come.

With seven Grammys and four decades of swinging dance music to his name, this celebrated pianist is credited with convincing the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences to finally create a Latin Grammy in 1993. By mixing traditional Hispanic grooves with the bold strokes of keyboard icons Thelonious Monk and McCoy Tyner, the Harlem native carved his own unique niche in the jazz world - while Palmieri later forays into salsa,

Mando Madness Once-in-a-lifetime pairings of A-list musicians has become something of a Savannah Music Fest trademark, ensuring that attendees walk away with an experience that is both memorable and – quite often – entirely unique. Such is the case with this mind-blowing summit meeting of some of the top mandolinists in the world. This who’s who of acoustic pickers reads like some weedy basement pipe dream that’s too good to be true. Backed by what’s being described as “an All-Star cast of instrumentalists” (including Psychograss members Darol Anger on fiddle, Tony Trischka on banjo (!), and David Grier on guitar), this supergroup features mando masters David Grisman (known for his longstanding partnership with the late Jerry Garcia), the Grammy-winning Sam Bush (who toured with Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett and Bela Fleck, as well as appeared on the soundtrack to the Coen Brothers smash O Brother, Where Art Thou?), Tony Wiliamson (the former Bluegrass Alliance member often referred to as one of the finest living mandolinists), and Don Steinberg (who’s played alongside Chet Atkins and Steve Goodman). If you’re even a casual fan of this wonderful instrument that has found a niche in bluegrass, Celtic and classical genres, don’t let this opportunity pass you by.

Eddie Palmieri’s Latin Jazz Septet

Each year, this stunning repository of improvisatory talent selects a famed jazz composer to salute through that artist’s own works and new pieces by the collective’s members that convey the same spirit and ethos. This time around, they’ve set their sights on the repertoire of the late, great John Coltrane – a nearmythical (and supremely Joshua Redman influential) saxophonist and bandleader whose very name carries an almost incomprehensible weight. This is the only Southern date on their tour, which also sees them headlining Lincoln Center. Led by artistic director Joshua Redman (dubbed "crown prince of the tenor sax" by the Associated Press), and featuring such luminaries as vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson (known or his 1960s tenure on Blue Note), Grammy Awardwinning trumpeter Nicholas Payton, and pianist Renee Rosnes (a protégé of Herbie Hancock). Macon, Miss., native Carey Bell is one of the finest blues harpists alive.

Originally working as a guitarist and bassist on the Chicago scene (where he gigged with the likes of Honeyboy Edwards, Earl Hooker and Big Walter Horton), by the late ‘60s, he was leading his own band, as well as touring with "the" Muddy Waters, and Willie Dixon’s Chicago Blues All-Stars. One of the more popular artists on the pioneering contemporary blues label Alligator Records, a collaborative LP with Junior Wells, James Cotton and Billy Branch earned him a coveted W.C. Handy Award in 1990. His son Lurrie is a self-taught guitarist who studied at the feet of such legendary axemen as the late Sunnyland Slim. A featured member of both Willie Dixon’s and Koko Taylor’s touring groups, Lurrie has a string of criticallyacclaimed albums on the way-cool Delmark label, and is said to shine the brightest when he plays alongside his father. Both Bells sing as well, and their familial bond only adds to their innate feel for raw, emotion-drenched blues.

Keith Kozel & The Foxedos A few months back, The Foxedos, a local anti-folk trio made up of Superhorse frontman Kozel, ARTillery Punch’s Ricardo Ochoa, and Splitfinger’s Sebastian Kozel & The Foxedos Edwards, made their debut at this downtown coffeehouse and performance venue. The idea was to provide an outlet for some of Kozel’s material that fell outside the constructs of his other, more established musical endeavors (including GAM and Hall Monitor). Primarily based around the folk and blues idioms, his naive, bedroom compositions were ably rendered by Edwards and Ochoa – both of whom are versatile enough to shuffle between several instruments ranging from theremin to bass.

When the opportunity for a standing monthly gig presented itself, the group expanded their vision to include a variety of other local artists. Now, every third Thursday they act as the de facto backing band for a rotating cast of frontpeople drawn from Savannah’s extensive and varied underground music community.

The basic format remains the same: stripped-down renditions of material that would either go unheard otherwise, and/or drastically retooled arrangements of tunes which may be familiar to local scenesters, but which have never been publicly performed in this way. It’s a novel idea that forces musicians out of their own self-imposed comfort zones and paves the way for the sort of happy accidents and unexpected epiphanies that only occur when art meets the unknown head on.

This month’s installment showcases guitarist and singer Jonathan Proctor – long an enigmatic, yet highly respected fixture on our indie-rock scene. As the main songwriter behind late-’80s cult faves Bughummer, his aggressive, disjointed, (pr)emo pipe bombs were well ahead of the curve, and helped pave the way for such later success stories as the now-thriving Engine Down (featuring former Bughummer bassist Keely Davis).

Though later efforts such as The Flam (featuring GAM bassist Mike Walker) and his ongoing outfit Big Shot Shot Down, this multi-talented artist – he’s also an accomplished comic book illustrator – has maintained a flair for penning angry, obtuse rants set to frenzied shards of Orange amp feedback.

For this upcoming gig, I’m told he’s offering up a gentler (and more trancelike) side, aided and abetted by keyboardist Joe Cannon of Puma Reflex, a retro synth act from Dayton, Ohio, which was briefly based in Savannah and still maintains strong ties here.

When pressed, Kozel says the sound the group has achieved in rehearsals bears more than a passing resemblance to the long-gone (and recently reformed) Louisville, Ky. post-punk outfit Slint - but, no matter what the set ultimately sounds like, it’s a rare chance to get more up close and personal with one of Savannah’s most underappreciated songwriters than he’s ever allowed an audience to do so before. Thurs., 8 pm, The Sentient Bean.

Gravy, Subversivo!

This double-bill of uncompromising prog-rock veers in two very different directions, but there’s enough common ground between the two acts to make the night work well as a whole.

Both are dead-set on doing their own thing their own way, regardless of how insular or off-putting it may seem to crowds who’ve been weaned on groups that dote on them like fawning manservants. That’s not to suggest that either group is anything Gravy less than extremely entertaining. The hyper, Zappa and Mike Pattoninspired funhousemirror antics of Gravy and the sardonic, film noir and surf freakouts of Subversivo! are Subversivo! never anything less than a blast to behold.

Just don’t come expecting to be led by the hand into anything resembling a typical “rock show.”

Both artists are part of the looselyknit Sofro collective, which basically means they share server space, and try to gig with each other as often as possible – spreading the message that doing exactly what you want is usually the single best maneuver a band can make if they ever want to make something of themselves.

Besides a financial success, that is.

Much as I respect and truly enjoy each of these groups, I can’t figure out for the life of me how much farther either can go up the touring band food chain.

They’re simply hamstrung and hog-tied by the take no prisoners attitude they have about their art.

That’s not a bad thing. In fact, I’m more than a little in awe of it. I just wish average folks were more accepting.

Mountains sometimes shift, and things do change in this ruthless world from time to time. Don’t kick yourself and regret never checking these bands out when you had the chance. They deserve much more than this town has ever given them.

The Finks The last time these North Carolina art-punks played Savannah, they were part of a nationwide multi-media tour, and tooling around in a retrofitted school bus that ran on used restaurant grease.

Fronted by a male-female duo which includes the captivating vocalist Liz Simmons (a former local known for her stint in The Stretch Marks), their quirky and sardonic indie-rock should appeal to fans of the Pixies, X, and Mission of Burma. Fri., The Jinx.

This Buffalo, N.Y. guitarist and singer has led this fiery, roadhouse trio for many years. They play upwards of 200 dates a year on the road, and have released a couple of above-average indie CDs. Their repertoire leans heavily on Albert King and Otis Rush-style electric blues, but they come armed with an abundance of their own material. Fri., JJ Cagney’s.

The Martin Lesch Duo Hilton Head-based keyboardist Lesch is best known for his regular gig backing up noted Georgia songwriter Angie Aparo (the author of Faith Hill’s mega-hit “Cry,” among others). When not on the road with Aparo, he maintains his own two-man show with drummer "Sneaky" Jack Freel.They offer tunes in a wide variety of genres, ranging from Dixieland jazz to pop-oriented blues. Nelly's ‘Pimp Juice’ Launch Party George Jones has his dog food, PDiddy has his clothing line, Kenny Rogers had his chicken, and now Nelly has his own beverage. Forgetting for just a moment that any fluid saddled with this unfortunate moniker sounds more like something you’d pay a dry cleaner extra to remove than something you’d willingly ingest, this marketing event-cum-dance party also boasts a “Model Search,” so there’s more than one reason to attend.

Some Seattle Dream Tallahassee, Florida trio that sets earnest, born-again Christian lyrics to squirrelly, melodic indie-rock. A bit heavy-handed, but very catchy and wellexecuted – with a mature sense of songwriting and strong vocals. Sun., 8 pm, Coastal Coffee (2100 E. Victory Dr.). ◗

Study, sip & spit WHEN I WAS A KID, I begged my parents to take me to buffets. My little mind figured that so much food in one gorgefest had to be a good thing. As I got older, and learned the unsettling facts of Germ Theory and the like, the hygiene factor got in the way of my buffet enthusiasm.

Wine buffets are another story.

Wine tastings have boomed in recent years, as non-profits realize how many people want to get drunk with an excuseâ&#x20AC;Ś erâ&#x20AC;Ś conscience. But these large tastings pose another kind of problem â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the sheer number of wines to taste. This abundance begs the question: How does one navigate such copious amounts of wine without ending up face down in the spit bucket?

What you need is a plan â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which will include some calculated spitting. I know it seems anathema to spit out perfectly good wine, but if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to taste as

many wines as possible, this is a necessary, albeit disgusting, evil.

Before getting drawn into the liquid smorgasbord, study the brochure the friendly volunteer gave you at the door.

Look for familiar wineries, then ignore them â&#x20AC;&#x201D; you paid big money to taste different stuff, right?

Most of the time, the larger tastings are organized by distributor and then winery, which helps industry politics, but not necessarily the consumer looking to plan. There will be a mishmash of wines everywhere, so youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have to dive into the pool and see what treasure you find.

Start with white wine, since dousing your palate with reds will dull your tongue to white wineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s delicate flavors. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re into sauvignon blanc â&#x20AC;&#x201D; likely the lightest of the wines available â&#x20AC;&#x201D; scout those out first. If you like that wineryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offering, try their other whites.

Then move to the next winery with a sauvignon blanc. Once youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve tired of whites or just want to taste dark stuff, move to reds.

How to survive a mega-wine tasting

Dessert wines should be left to the last round, since the sweetness can also dull your tongue for other wines. If you sense your tastebuds starting to numb, use sparkling wine and bread to revive your tongue.

Keep in mind that wine tastings arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Spring Break all-you-can-drink events, so donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel compelled to finish the serving, especially if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like it. You wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hurt anyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s feelings.

And a tip for those people trying to look savvy: Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t rinse your glass out with water after every taste. Not only does it make you look like an amateur â&#x20AC;&#x201C; professionals rinse with wine, if anything, and usually only if returning to whites after reds â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it wastes time and waters down the subsequent wine.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let the people behind the table do it to you either. Some wineries donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to waste wine for rinsing, which is understandable, but watering down the wine wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give you the full effect of the wineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s flavor.

Be sure to make notes about wines that intrigue you â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it helps, especially

after youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been sloshing for a couple of hours. You wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t remember the wine labels clearly in the next morningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s haze, I assure you.

A word of boring responsibility: After these big tastings, at least 75 percent of the partygoers are not ready for the wheel. So be responsible and take a cab, or designate a driver. DUIs cost about $5,000 these daysâ&#x20AC;Ś. â&#x2014;&#x2014;

Director Stanley Kramer’s 1967 Christmas release Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner turned out to be a gargantuan moneymaker and earned Oscars for lead actress Katharine Hepburn and screenwriter William Rose. Time has been anything but kind to Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, which seems more hollow and condescending with every passing year. Striving to be an important “message” movie about the absurdity of racism, the film cast Hepburn and Spencer Tracy as a liberal couple whose values are put to the test when their daughter (Katherine Houghton) announces that she intends to marry a black doctor (Sidney Poitier).

The new Guess Who is actually an improvement over its faux-classic predecessor: It’s funnier, more relaxed and better paced. Applying role reversal to the original template, Guess Who stars Bernie Mac as Percy Jones, a bank loan officer who’s on the verge of throwing a 25th wedding anniversary party with his wife Marilyn (Judith Scott) when he learns that his lovely daughter Theresa (Zoe Saldana) is coming home with her new boyfriend in tow. As Percy states at one point, he’s expecting his child to bring home a Denzel Washington; instead, she drags in some punk’d white boy named Simon Green (Ashton Kutcher). Guess Who is more interested in doling out laughs than harping on any heavy themes, but there does exist one sequence that points out the perpetual difficulty in applying humor to racially sensitive issues. Egged on by Percy, Simon shares a handful of black jokes with the members of the Jones household as they’re all seated around the dinner table. Simon’s initial barrage unexpectedly meets the approval of his black hosts — when he answers his own gag about why Adam and Eve can’t be black (“Have you ever tried to take a rib from a black man?”), even Percy’s whitewary dad (Hal Williams) can’t control his laughter — but as he presses on, we tense up, afraid that one of his jokes will cross the line between benign joshing and hurtful slander. But where exactly is that line, and how can it possibly be the same for every person? Ultimately, though, for all its attention to the racial divide, Guess Who isn’t as interested in being the new Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner as it is in taking its place as the next Meet the Parents. In fact, the makers of Parents might be more apt to sue for plagiarism than the creators of Dinner, given the extent that many situations and gags are recycled from that Ben Stiller blockbuster (fortunately, these bits retain their bite). Exploring issues pertaining to blacks and whites is

toward the start of The Ring Two, so too is this premise jettisoned completely from this sorry follow-up’s storyline, leaving the film nowhere to go but down.

The original Ring (itself a remake of the popular Japanese flick Ringu) established that the only way the demonic girl Samara could work her evil on the world was through the playing of the aforementioned videotape. In this sequel, reporter Rachel Keller (returning star Naomi Watts) destroys the object at the outset, so scripter Ehren Kruger decided that he might as well make up new rules as he scribbled along, thus rendering this sequel not only illogical but inconsequential as well. Rachel and her young son Aidan (David Dorfman, the worst child actor this side of Spencer Breslin) have moved from Seattle to a quiet Oregon town, but Samara’s spirit won’t leave them alone, as she seems intent on taking over Aidan’s body. Dorfman is such a monotonous performer that the addition of some Exorcist-inspired peagreen vomit might have helped us determine exactly when he’s being possessed; then again, such a gesture of goodwill would be little more than a Band-Aid applied to a hemorrhaging film whose greatest sin is that it’s unremittingly dull.

Visually, the film is yet another triumph for computer programmers, as their blood, sweat and bytes have enabled them to create a wondrous landscape that’s a joy to behold. But whenever any of the metallic characters that populate this world open their mouths, it’s like listening to rusty bolts across a chalkboard. Robots’ rote storyline centers on young Rodney Copperbottom (Ewan McGregor), who journeys from his tiny hometown to the sprawling metropolis of Robot City to fulfill his dream of becoming an important inventor. Yet his arrival in the big burg coincides with the power play of the ruthless company executive Ratchet (Greg Kinnear), who plots to destroy all the destitute robots by catering only to the rich ones.

BE COOL ✰✰

Yet one more lazy sequel to a great film, Be Cool is a major disappointment that fails to capture the essence of what made Get Shorty such a memorable experience. In adapting the Elmore Leonard novel, director Barry Sonenfeld and scripter Scott Frank knew that the key to success rested in the capable hands of John Travolta, whose work as shylock-turned-movie-producer Chili Palmer remains a career best. Travolta owned that picture, yet he received more than adequate support from Sonenfeld’s playful direction, Frank’s character-driven screenplay and a stellar supporting cast that included Danny DeVito. Alas, F. Gary Gray (the tepid remake of The Italian

Job) is no Sonenfeld, Peter Steinfeld (Analyze That) is no Frank, and a promising cast is largely left to flounder in the middle of a movie that never provides a compelling argument for its own existence.

DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN ✰✰1/2

The gorgeous Kimberly Elise (The Manchurian Candidate) gets to display her acting chops as Helen McCarter, who’s stunned when her husband of 18 years, a prominent Atlanta lawyer (Steve Harris), demands a divorce and forcibly throws her out of their mansion to make room for his gold-digging girlfriend (Lisa Marcos). A huge hit with AfricanAmerican audiences, Tyler Perry’s play has been adapted (by the author himself) into a movie that’s overflowing with positive Christian ideals as well as an honest assessment of the intrinsic desire for seeking retribution versus the spiritual need for giving absolution.

CONSTANTINE ✰✰

From the connotations of its hero’s name (Constantine was the Roman emperor who endorsed Christianity more for personal gain than for any spiritual fulfillment) to depictions of Hell that borrow heavily from the works of Hieronymus Bosch, Constantine tries hard to include heady material that will allow for postscreening discussions around the water cooler or in cinephile trades (something The Matrix accomplished masterfully with its rampant theology). But as was the case with the muddled Jacob’s Ladder, Constantine never brings its debates into focus, choosing instead to pile on its issues like so many toppings onto a baked potato.

HITCH ✰✰1/2

A warm and witty comedy that unfortunately runs itself into the ground during its final act, the picture benefits immeasurably from the presence of Will Smith, who may or may not be a great actor but who is most assuredly a great movie star. He's at turns sly, suave and sexy as Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, who bills himself as the Date Doctor because of his ability to make a living by advising other men how to land the woman of their dreams.

He finds his biggest challenge in the form of Albert (Kevin James), a clumsy, overweight accountant who's hopelessly under the spell of beautiful super-model Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta). But Hitch unexpectedly finds his own romantic inclinations rising to the surface once he meets Sara Melas (Eva Mendes).

Mendes, who's always come across as a Jennifer Lopez who can't act -- no, wait, that would still make her Jennifer Lopez - initially has trouble keeping pace with a leading man prettier than she is, but ends up holding her own. ◗

Your windows can serve as secondary escape routes from your home and are invaluable in case of emergency; every member of your family should know how to take advantage of a window exit during a fire. However, it is equally as important for homeowners to understand that open windows can be hazardous, especially to young children, and to be familiar with the important steps you can take to prevent accidental falls.

In honor of National Window Safety Week, April 24-30, 2005, take some time to assess the condition of your home’s windows and test your family’s awareness of their importance in terms of overall home safety. The tips below can help ensure that your windows provide a trouble-free escape route for your family in an emergency while remaining safe for youngsters in your home.

Windows provide one of the fastest, easiest alternatives to escape a house fire. Sit down with your family to design an emergency escape plan—and practice it. Always be sure that there is at least one window in each sleeping and living area that is available as an alternate escape route during a home emergency.

Make sure that your windows open and close easily. When performing spring repairs, be careful not to accidentally paint or nail your windows shut, making emergency escape impossible. Do not install window unit air conditioners where they could block or impede escape during an emergency.

While security bars, grilles and window grates keep intruders out, they also can lock you in. Make sure they have a simple and functioning release mechanism, so that you can escape a fire.

If you have young children in your home and are thinking about installing window fall prevention devices or guards, make sure the product has a release mechanism so that it can be opened for escape in a fire emergency. Consult your local fire department or building code official to determine proper window guard placement.

When children are present, make sure that windows are closed and locked. Set and enforce rules to keep your children from playing around windows or patio doors, and keep furniture, along with any other objects that children may climb, away from windows.
