The Tibetan monks’ effect on Savannahians during their last visit in 2003 proved so powerful that Murray Silver created a special term for it. “I call it ‘monk drunk,’” he says.

Silver, an author and documentarian, once worked as the monks’ tour manager.

His most recent book is When Elvis Meets the Dalai Lama, which includes accounts of his experiences with the monks.

This week, the monks are creating a mandala in the atrium of the Jepson Center for the Arts. They’ve visited Savannah three times and have enchanted locals and tourists alike with their colorful -- and loud -- ceremonies. But this visit may be their last for a while.

“This is the third time and probably the last for a long time,” says Harry DeLorme, Senior Curator of Education. “We wanted to bring them back to celebrate the opening of the Jepson Center. I’m glad we were able to do it.”

“One of the reasons we wanted to bring them back was we wanted to do something very special for Diane Lesko,” Silver says, referring to the Telfair’s director, who is leaving her post. “It is partly to consecrate the new Jepson Center, and also it’s for Diane.”

The city of Savannah is in particular need of the monks’ healing influence, Silver says. “We’re directing healing energy to the city, in particular the mayor, and also to the continuing racial divide,” he says.

“The last time they were here, according to the police department, there was a remarkable drop in crime in the city. A lot of people may point the finger to different reasons, but it was one of the largest dips in the city’s history.”

During the monks’ visit, a long drought was broken by rain, Silver says. “They always bring rain,” he says, noting that the current dry spell is expected to be broken by rain during the monks’ visit. “Apparently the universe knows something about this we don’t,” he says.”

“Their visit was scheduled to coincide with the Asian Festival,” he says. “This time around, the visit is a city-sponsored event, so all events are free.”

Visitors can go in and out the Jepson atrium as often as they want to observe the work in progress. On Thursday, June 15 at 7 p.m., a lecture on the symbolism of the sand mandala will be presented by Geshe Lobsang Tenzin of the Drepung Loseling Institute at Emory University.

A lecture was held the last time the monk’s visited, but the speaker, Geshe Lobsang Chogyal, a famed Tibetan healer, did not speak English and his works had to be translated by a former monk. Geshe Lobsang Tenzin, however, speaks not only English, but several other languages.

As a boy, Tenzin was hand-picked to join the monastery and as a young man was sent by no less than the Dalai Lama to Atlanta. “There is such a need for teachers in English-speaking countries,” Silver says. “The sad thing is there is such a tremendous demand put on him, he could no longer honor his role as a monk and had to disrobe. He has had to postpone his own development on the path to enlightenment.”

Tenzin earned a doctorate in cognitive psychology at Emory. His mission today is to bridge the gap between East and West in regards to psychology, Silver says.

“To hear him speak is a rare and wonderful opportunity,” Silver says. “Without him, the Tibetan movement in America would be light years behind what it is.”

On Sunday, June 18 at 2 p.m., a closing ceremony will be held. At its end, the mandala will be swept up and the public will join the monks in a procession to the Savannah River to disperse it.

The mandala sand paintings are created from powdered marble. The blueprints for

mandalas come from ancient Buddhist scriptures. The monks draw the outlines of the mandala, using a compass, string and chalk. “Immediately following the opening ceremony, the monks begin drawing on a table,” DeLorme says.

To create the ornate paintings, the monks distribute the sand grain by grain by rubbing on the grated edge of a special tools called a chak-pur. This causes vibration of the chak-pur, which makes the sand flow like liquid. “It is an incredible skill to master,” DeLorme says.

While the finished mandala is finely detailed and colorful, it is short-lived. “After the closing event on Sunday, the monks will sweep the mandala up and take it to the river,” DeLorme says.

During their last visit, crowds broke attendance records at the Telfair Museum.

So many people showed up for the closing ceremony and procession to the river, many could not get inside the museum.

“The monks really packed the house last time,” DeLorme says. “This time, we’re providing overflow seating and a screen so people can watch the ceremony in the auditorium. Because this is taking place in the atrium, people can also look in through the big glass windows,. They can sit on the steps in front. That way we can reach more people.”

The monks’ last visit was just before the start of the war in Iraq, and at a time when crime in Savannah was on the rise. “Everyone felt the need for some kind of spiritual focus,” DeLorme says.

“A mandala represents an enlightened state of being,” he says. “It’s almost like a picture of heaven.”

Sweeping up the mandala at the closing ceremony represents the impermanence of all things, DeLorme says. “It’s not destroyed, it’s released into a body of water to release the healing properties,” he says.

The original Depung Loseling Monastery was established in 1415 near Lhasa, Tibet. When China took over Tibet in

1959, hundreds of monasteries were destroyed, including Depung Loseling.

Although more than 15,000 monks once lived at Drepung Loseling, only 250 of its monks escaped. They rebuilt their monastery in southern India, and it now houses about 3,000 monks.

The U.S. government allows the monks to stay just one year, so each year a new group of monks comes to America. They adapt surprisingly well.

“They’ll stare at the TV screen no matter what’s on it. The first thing they want to see is basketball,” Silver says. “Of the few English words they know, one them is ‘Shaq.’ They watch basketball and want to play it, although it may be the most polite game of basketball you’ll ever want to see.”

Food is too scarce in Tibet for the monks to live as vegetarians. However, they do say an elaborate prayer before each meal to thank the animal that has given its life, and also to ensure that it might be reincarnated to a higher level.

“They don’t like sweets or seafood,” Silver says. “They consider shrimp and other seafood ‘insects of the sea.’ When they cook for themselves, they make meat dumplings, which they eat with rice and a few vegetables.”

Wherever they go, the monks seem to generate energy and momentum, Silver says. “All they’re trying to do is plant seeds.

Maybe they will plant seeds in people’s minds so they’ll become compassionate and aware.” w The mandala is in the atrium of the Jepson Center for the Arts. The atrium is open free of charge during regular operating hours through Sunday, June 18. On Thursday, June 15 at 7 p.m., Geshe Lobsang Tenzin will give a free lecture in the Jepson Center’s Neises Auditorium. Closing ceremony is Sunday, June 18 at 2 p.m. at the Jepson Center. A procession to the Savannah River will follow the ceremony, and the mandala will be dispersed in the river.

It seemed we were in the middle of nowhere but for a nondescript dirt road winding its way toward our destination. As our bus rattled on out of earshot, I and another American teacher fell into step with three of my students -Britney, William and Bob -- as they led us through a quintessential Chinese landscape of rice paddy fields and terraced hillsides.

Britney, William and Bob were their chosen English names. Their Chinese names, like the rest of the 200 names in my class attendance book, were too difficult and too many for me to remember.

Fortunately, and not without reason, I rarely had trouble invoking their English names; Dolphin, Aqua, King, Overcome, Goose, Maverick and Bart were some of the more colorful choices.

Britney (as in Spears?) had invited us to visit her aunt and uncle in their tucked away village, the English name of which I will always remember - Three Trees village.

The dirt road leading to Three Trees narrowed and eventually fractured into several muddy lanes as we approached the slumbering community. We skirted around large wooden houses with methodically tiled roofs, each reclining under a canopy of blue smoke.

The water buffalo lounged blithely beneath the houses on their days off from

hauling plow and farmer around soggy fields.

Having passed a child so terrified by the faces of a couple of “white devils” that he hid motionless behind his hand until we were gone, I felt like Alice tumbling head first into some shadowy rabbit hole.

Unlike Alice, though, I didn’t unwittingly fall into this wonderland. It was part chance, part choice and part curiosity that I had come to live and teach in China.

From kindergarten to college I had followed from upstream down to school’s end. After graduating high school from St. Vincent’s Academy in 1998, I coasted through the arches of the University of Georgia, and out four years later with a degree in Journalism. But as the waters narrowed ahead, I could hear the turbulent rumbling of the unknown.

The course I charted veered slightly from the mainstream. I welcomed the sensation of directional freedom and selfdetermination, the novelty of complete independence, apart from the life of contracts, settling down, ties, binding responsibilities

and sacrifices which I would face soon enough.

A job in my field of study might have been the next logical door to open in that long succession of doors toward a career, but it might also have shut the door on other rare experiences.

This was my time and Asia, apparently, was my destination. The U.S. Peace Corps’ sweeping vision and broad reach would help me to blaze my own path.

Back in Three Trees, Britney’s family was waiting for us. Watery eyes set in leathery faces welcomed us into a dimly lit house. As introductions and translated introductions circled around me, my eyes bounced from wall (where ears of corn dried on hooks), to floor (carpeted with dust and sunlight), to ceiling (where potatoes poked blemished heads through ceiling planks).

Eager to satisfy my curiosity, the family urged me to climb up to the attic where I

found mountains of potatoes stored there. Much of Chinese life centered around food, to such a degree that I was finding it not only on tables, but hanging off walls and stockpiled in attics.

We were encouraged to sit and warm ourselves around the heater, an iron oven in the middle of the living room that served as both central heating and a stove for cooking. After a while, other farmers materialized, mostly to smoke cigarettes, drink, test our Chinese and gawk.

Even more peculiar in this pastoral setting of potatoes and peasants was the glossy new television and DVD player propped up in a corner of the living room.

Later that night we would sit around and watch Hong Kong actor, Chow Yun Fat, magically change poker cards to his favor in the Chinese slapstick, God of Gamblers.

Unlike the cool and confident Mr. Fat, no magic would ensure that my gamble on moving to China would be a successful

I adapted English lessons to meet the needs of swollen classes of students working at multiple levels of comprehension, and on occasion I humbly spoke Chinese in order to be understood or make a point.

Bar my own lesson in humility, my Chinese was always good for a laugh. I soon discovered that a sense of humor was my most valuable work tool.

Sometimes the most difficult adjust-

ments to make were the cultural ones.

Weaved into the fabric of China’s cultural tapestry is a concept known as guanxi, which loosely connotes the idea of, “I scratch your back, and you scratch mine.”

At times I would accept an invitation to lunch only to discover between post-meal burps of gastronomic appreciation that an auditorium full of students was waiting to hear me speak. I had my back scratched many times, and in return I was asked to lecture at schools, tutor someone’s son or

daughter or help work colleagues apply to American universities.

I also discovered a milder form of guanxi at work in the classroom, where my students worked together to make sure everyone had the right answer. Giving another student the answer, even (especially) during an exam, wasn’t seen so much as cheating as a collective effort to make sure everyone passed. continued on page 10

In February 2002, in my last semester of college, I applied to the Peace Corps, a volunteer organization that places Americans in jobs overseas for a period of 2 years. Developing countries in Africa, East and Central Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific, welcome volunteers with experience in any number of areas, from community and business development, to teaching and health services.

Nothing quite prepares you for life in the Peace Corps, which can be frightening at first but also exciting, as the unknown usually is. And your life as a Peace Corps volunteer is a shifting experience of changes and constant adaptation.

Whatever “reality” a volunteer understands at home is replaced by a very different reality abroad. He/she chooses to eat different foods, live and work in an often challenging environment, and adapt to a different cultural framework.

With food alone, a volunteer might spend the first couple of months or even the first year adjusting to a new, sometimes bizarre, diet. Breakfast in China was rarely a bowl of Cheerios and more often a fried egg treading hot water in a bowl of thick noodles.

And although my stomach was more alert for lunch and dinner, the menu of fish heads and chicken feet, congealed blood and chewy crickets, tender tofu and spicy veggies, still managed to shock my palate.

Luckily my vegetarian diet excused me from having to try other less than savory dishes (woof).

In the Peace Corps, living conditions vary from country to country, even from city to city within the same country. Whereas a volunteer might spend two years sharing a bathroom with a host family in Equador or building a latrine in Ghana, he/she might also enjoy the luxury of a private Western-style toilet in China, a sanctuary of peace in a country of billions.

Though I was grateful for my own bathroom (and apartment) in China, the time I spent there in winter was less than comfortable. In a house where I could see my breath, I sometimes skipped the decorum of a daily shower.

With working conditions, as with living conditions, volunteers had to patiently and creatively mold themselves to the tools and amenities available.

Teaching English in China was a mixture of fun and frustration. I enjoyed the students but not the classrooms, which often had broken window panes and no heat, the freezing air making it difficult to concentrate.

During the worst of it, I taught from the inside of a bulging winter coat with a nub of chalk clenched between my red fingers; and my students took their exams over a smoky fire, leaning over mid-answer to stoke the coals.

Coercing the collective mentality out of my students was like beating my head against China’s Great Wall; but it was a headache I endured and tried to medicate with assignments tailored to divide and conquer the creative talents of each student -- not easily done in a class of 40, where maybe only a third of the class understood my instructions the first time around.

My students had a better chance of surviving China’s inevitable transition into a market-driven future if they could think for themselves, create for themselves, and rely on their own judgment.

I would only live and work in China for ten months. While the normal term of service in one country is two years, the arrival and rapid spread of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) on China’s coast raised sufficient alarm at Peace Corps headquarters to organize an immediate removal of all volunteers.

The decision was sudden, giving most of us only one or two days to pack our belongings, explain to colleagues why we were leaving, and say goodbye to any students we happened to run into.

Beyond what I had been told in a brief conversation with the medical doctor, I

had no idea of the severity of SARS, and as it turned out, I wasn’t alone.

The Peace Corps’ decision to evacuate shocked not only the volunteers, but also the Chinese people and the government.

Until then the government had successfully kept a lid on SARS, assuring everyone that the disease had been contained and the number of outbreaks was dwindling.

They were little pleased with their loss

of face after our departure, and we couldn’t rejoice over being torn from a life we had become used to, in a skin we had grown comfortable in. It felt like molting out of season.

In the end I transferred to another country, Romania, to complete the two years of service I had committed to. I spent the next year and three months learning a new language, adapting to a new mentality and culture, and substituting methods for teaching English in a Chinese classroom with methods for teaching English in a Romanian classroom.

It was a new channel, another rabbit hole, a different experience altogether.

But in another time, out of a different rabbit hole, I remember that sleepy village in rural China. Lunch was finally ready. We all crowded around the bubbling pot on the stove in the middle of the living room -- myself and the other American teacher, my students, my student’s family, and a peppering of neighbors.

Armed with a bowl of rice and chopsticks, I fished through a bubbling pot of animal intestines, vegetables and tofu cubes. At our elbows, a second bowl was kept filled of baijiu, a noxious liquor that goes down with the ease of gasoline.

Though our conversation was a confusing mix of Miao, Chinese and English, we all understood the language of good company and laughter.

As we persistently toasted one another, I looked at Britney’s soft, demure face (China’s future), at her aunt’s pliable face (China’s vanishing past), and at the weathered brows of the Chinese farmers sitting around the stove (China’s continued struggle).

Sleepless in Pittsburgh But in many parts of the country, like Pittsburgh, Pa., where I am spending a little time, the sun takes on a new meaning.

So does rain.

We do not do rain in Savannah, I try to tell someone who is apologizing for the weather. It doesn’t even enter our consciousness.

For us, rain is good. It’s exciting. It’s refreshing. It’s new.

The same with hills.

A lot of this immediate love affair has to do with time. On vacation - or after a certain age - we have it.

Yesterday, pedaling up a steep Shady Avenue, past vast expanses of green lawn, healthy hostas, happy rose bushes, I feel a slight breeze on my leg, look back and spot a flat tire.

No matter! No swearing! I merely dismount, take my bike and start walking down (and up and down and up) toward Forbes Avenue in Squirrel Hill to the bike shop for the necessary repair.

I don’t care about the pathetic Pittsburgh Pirates who are in last place one rung below the Chicago Cubs, the Walgreens that developers are trying to put in a few blocks away, the new Schenley Plaza that old-timers are complaining about because this beautiful green space has replaced valuable parking.

It doesn’t bother me to be stuck on something called the Conrail Service Road after driving some Savannah friends to the downtown Amtrak station at 5 in the morning.

Or that a grand total of four trains now come through Pittsburgh a day. Or that winter is so sucky in this part of the world that people have to turn the water off to their sprinklers in October - and keep it off until June.

I don’t even care that I’m having trouble finding Whole Foods, aka Whole Paychecks, even though I found it once and know it’s a fabulous store.

That’s because I do know how to find the Giant Eagle supermarket (“Try one of our 123 organic produce items today”).

And by mistake I came across the East End Food Cooperative, which is down the street.

I did start to get a bit irritated - and a little frightened on descending a long incline - earlier today when I began a bike ride under blue skies only to return home pelleted by huge rain drops.

Look up lust in your thesaurus. Know what you’ll find? I’ll tell you.

Itch, passion, excitement, hunger. Get the picture? Make no mistake. Lust is not love.

Lust is not affection or fondness or loyalty or regard.

Lust is heat. It’s new. It’s fresh.

And that, for some of us, is what we seek when we travel. Not so much in the guise of lovers as in location.

Away from the weeds, the worry, the inventory of things that need doing, we are different people, the world is a different place, The ordinary takes on a different meaning.

We can read for hours. We can draw.

We can sit and listen to the radio without feeling self-conscious. The new gym is better.

Until the foreign becomes the familiar. Until we have appointments to keep and no one bothered to tell us Washington Street becomes Fifth Avenue or the 9th Street bridge is closed.

Until we look in the mirror and see the same body, the same extra weight, the same lines on our face. Until our insomnia returns and our bills catch up to us.

Until too many people recognize us and start to say hello. Until we learn a few things about the town and start weighing in on local issues.

But first the honeymoon, the excitement. It starts immediately.

With the blintzes we order in a deli, the parking space we find in front of the deli that has no meter, the movie theater that shows the absolute best art films, the day lilies down the street and how robust and tall they stand, the way the sun hits the houses in the hills at sunset, the escalator in a small, cozy neighborhood Barnes and Noble, the all-glass exterior in a public library, the way a computer man from Mac Doctors comes out to your house to help you.

The bipolar, ever-shifting weather.

At 4 o’clock in the afternoon, when someone says, “Let’s go outside and catch some warmth.” I have to laugh.

When someone else a few days later, someone wearing a black dress escorts me to her patio to SIT IN THE SUN, I have to laugh again.

In June, in summer, in Savannah, we do not do these things. We do not seek the sun in the middle of the afternoon.

We do not wear dark, heat-absorbing clothes. We are not crazy.

Summer Concerts in the Squares kicked off last week with a performance by the Sandra Embly Quartet in Johnson Square.

How they voted • In its proposed ‘06-’07 budget, the Savannah/Chatham County School Board tentatively agreed Wednesday to reduce its tax rate by 1.46 mills, which would reduce local taxes by $14.4 million.

The proposed savings -- made possible by a large increase in the county’s overall tax digest -- would translate to an estimated $56 for homeowners with residences valued at $100,000, says a spokesman.

Superintendent Thomas Lockamy said, “Because of the increase from the tax digest we can roll back the mileage rate giving residents more money throughout the year. More than that, it shows good stewardship on the part of the School Board and school system.”

A final vote is expected during a special session at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 13.

• Congressman John Barrow (D-12th District) sided with telecom companies in voting against “net neutrality” last week in Washington.

Critics say the Communications, Opportunity, Promotion, and Enhancement Act -- which passed the House of Representatives -- would enable large telecoms to install a tiered fee system where users must pay for access to content that’s currently free. Supporters say the tightened controls are necessary to upgrade high-speed networks fairly.

Congressman Jack Kingston (R-1st District) did not vote.Both Barrow and Kingston are up for re-election this November.

• Georgia Senators Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss both voted last week to support a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and to repeal the estate tax. Both measures failed in the U.S. Senate. w

• A man was driving near the intersection of Cloverdale Drive and Elmore Street when a teen boy threw a hammer at his car, hitting the trunk. The hammer put two dents in the car’s trunk. The victim said the suspect ran off with the hammer and in the company of a young girl. An officer found a boy and girl who matched the description given by the victim. The boy had two hammers on his person. He was arrested and released to the custody of his mother. In the officer’s presence, the boy admitted throwing the hammer at the car because his girlfriend “wanted him to throw the hammers at vehicles.”

• A Scarborough Street resident called police after her husband’s diamond ring disappeared while carpet and tile were being laid in her house. The woman said she had contracted a crew from a local carpet business to do the work. She said all had gone well until she

The woman said she contacted someone at the carpet business, who arranged a meeting with the crew leader of the project. The crew leader said at the meeting he would pay for the ring since “one of his guys probably took it.” The woman said she has not seen the crew leader since. The man from the carpet business also has not had any contact with the man, but was able to provide information on the identities of the rest of the work crew that had been at the woman’s house when the theft occurred.

• An officer was sent to the area of Abercorn and President streets after a concerned citizen observed a woman using cocaine in her vehicle. The citizen told police that the woman had just driven away and was heading south down Abercorn Street. In the meantime, another officer made a traffic stop of the woman’s car at the intersection of Bull and Hull streets because her windshield was cracked. The woman agreed to allow her car to be searched. She was walked to the front of a police van so she could not interfere with the search. While speaking to the woman, one of the officers noticed she had blood inside both nostrils. She also was very protective of her purse, but when asked if the officer could look inside the purse, she agreed and handed it over. Inside was a black cloth bag with a red drawstring. Inside the bag was a clear plastic bag with two silver vials and three small plastic straws. The plastic bag had a powdery residue throughout its inside. The woman was asked what was in the vials, but she just looked at the ground. Then she was asked, “How much cocaine is in here?” She replied, “It was an eight-ball” that cost about $250 and would last her about a week and a half. She was arrested. w

Tybee Island police are investigating the theft of a public art statue, and the Tybee Turtle Tour has organized a reward of $1,000 for information leading to arrest of the perpetrators.

Early on June 7, someone stole a fiberglass statue of a sea turtle that stood in front of the Tybee Island Marine Science Center. The statue is titled Ma Cootah enn Lee’ Ones, which means “Mother turtle and little ones” in the Gullah language. When police arrived, they found the statue’s base abandoned in the parking lot, along with a few random pieces from the artwork.

The statue was one of several that are being set around Tybee as part of the Tybee Turtle Tour, a community art project sponsored by the Tybee Arts Association. The mission of the project is to save turtles through ecological education in a public art form. The statue was recovered two days later by Allen Tatum and Malcom McDowell, who were crabbing at the edge of the marsh on Spanish Hammock. The statue was taken to city hall.

Rebecca Rice, co-chair of the Tybee Turtle Tour, says the statue will be repaired. Rice says the statue is irreplaceable. “The artist, Don Josephson, took two and a half months with that paint job,” she says. “Because we have many more (turtle statues) going up, and we want the community to know we are serious,” Rice says. “When they attack our turtles, they attack Tybee.”

Dying to Eat

In a May dispatch from Atlanta on Southerners’ notoriously unnutritious, fatladen cuisine, a Chicago Tribune reporter watered readers’ mouths with descriptions of the “hamdog” and the “Luther” (prized dishes of Mulligan’s restaurant in Decatur, Ga.), which are, respectively, “a half-pound of hamburger meat wrapped around a hot dog, which is deep-fried and served on a hoagie topped with chili, bacon and a fried egg,” and “a half-pound burger served with bacon and cheese on a Krispy Kreme doughnut.” The 11 states from Washington, D.C., to Florida, west to Texas, have the nation’s highest mortality rate from strokes, but, said a University of Mississippi professor, “Food is a strong emblem of identity for Southerners,” uniquely shared across racial lines.

Can’t Possibly Be True

Near Tampa, Fla., in May, Robin Key, 44, survived a .38-caliber gunshot through the windshield of her minivan when the bullet came to rest in her lap after being slowed by hitting her shoulder belt and bra strap. And in New York City in April, Glenda Clarke, 26, in a rest room of a nightclub when a gunfight erupted outside, survived a bullet that tore through a door, grazed her scalp, and came to rest in her thick hair weave.

A so-far-unnamed 15-year-old New York City girl (a student at the once-mostdangerous Hillcrest High School) was arrested in May and charged with attacking three classmates by biting them viciously

on the face, necessitating plastic surgery for at least one, who had a chunk of flesh gnawed off before bystanders could restrain the girl (described by classmates as a “goth vampire”). “She was trying to get to my jugular,” the victim said. “For some reason, she just likes to bite.”

In May, a judge in Edmonton, Alberta, ordered Shee Theng, 30, to serve a nine-month community-control sentence for partially scalping his then-girlfriend by attempting to “style” her hair with a power drill, a technique he said he learned about on a TV infomercial. Theng admitted that he knew it was a bad idea because he had previously screwed up his own hair trying it out.

Inexplicable

Michael Scanlon, 31, a chief associate of disgraced Washington, D.C., lobbyist Jack Abramoff, reportedly earned millions from his largely illegal deals with Abramoff and spent most of it buying real estate in Delaware beach communities during 2002-2005, paying at least $12 million in cash. However, according to a May report in the Wilmington News-Journal, Scanlon dutifully each summer during those years worked as a full-time lifeguard on Delaware beaches, at $11.35 an hour, and reportedly had tried to line up the job

again this summer, but was turned down

by Rehoboth Beach officials because of his pending federal sentence.

“Leigh” (who has shed his last name) was arrested at the courthouse in Machias, Maine, in April, charged with trespassing for the 24th time locally, a strategy he has employed unsuccessfully to try to convince a court to erase a 1993 conviction for reckless conduct with a firearm. Leigh’s pattern appeared to be: trespass, then raise the 1993 case in court, then see it ignored as irrelevant, then get jailed for trespass, then get out, then trespass again, then repeat the process. In the latest conviction, he was sentenced to time served, since he had already been in jail for the previous year.

Unclear on the Concept

Jason Lyon, 28, a National Guardsman from Buffalo, N.Y., who hurt his ankle jumping from a Humvee in Baghdad in 2004, was cleared, after treatment, to return to combat. After his tour ended, he applied to the U.S. Postal Service to be a letter carrier but was turned down because of his ankle injury (though he is free to apply for less-strenuous positions). In March, after publicity about the case, the Postal Service said it would seek a second medical opinion on the ankle, and a decision was pending at press time.

Ronald Michalowicz, 54, a fire inspector for Bedford Park, Ill., was dismissed after 28 years on the job (about a year short of retirement) for violating town rules against soliciting charitable contributions.

According to a Chicago Sun-Times report in May, the solicitation was initiated by others to pay for Michalowicz’s treatment for tongue cancer, which was thought to be fairly quickly fatal, but which he has survived after chemotherapy. A town official, having noted Michalowicz’s near-terminal condition earlier, approved the solicitation, but when Michalowicz returned to work, other officials insisted on enforcing the nosolicitation rule. He has sued for wrongful discharge.

More Things to Worry About

(1) Spokane, Wash., dentist Henry G. Kolsrud, 82, decided to give up his license in May rather than face punishment for having an unsanitary office; among the charges: that he kept cat food in the office refrigerator with dental supplies, and that he scooped up cat vomit around the office with dental spatulas. (2) Denmark’s Prince Henrik (husband of the queen, Margrethe II) in an April magazine interview declared that dog meat is one of his favorite dishes (even though he is honorary president of the Danish Dachshund Club, owns several dachshunds and has published poems dedicated to dachshunds).

Least Competent Criminals In St. Paul, Minn., in May, an unnamed man, working out a community-service sentence by cleaning up for the next day’s “graduation” at the St. Paul Police Department’s dog training school, was caught with drugs by the senior canine “instructor,” Buster. According to a report in the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune, the worker had brought six small bags of marijuana with him, even though assigned to the dog school. “I was going to smoke it when I was done working,” he said.

Smooth Reactions

(1) Defendant Justin Jacobson, 21, fighting an assault charge, had a mistrial declared during jury selection when, during a disagreement at the defense table, he slapped his lawyer (Olympia, Wash., May). (2) Defendant John Gomes, fighting a murder charge and apparently not liking that so many of his lawyer’s motions were being denied by the judge, suddenly reached over and began strangling the lawyer, until court officers pulled him off (Boston, May).

Recent Poor-Taste News

(1) In April, authorities at El Salvador’s La Esperanza prison near San Salvador arrested visitor Lidia Alvarado for allegedly trying to smuggle an M-67 grenade to inmates by stuffing it inside her vagina.

(2) Also in April, according to a report in the Lincoln (Neb.) Journal-Star, a 38-yearold man appeared at the ER at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln with a 20-ounce soft drink bottle lodged in his rectum. (3) Also in April, according to a report in The Capital (Annapolis, Md.), a former restaurant manager was acquitted of assaulting one of his then-employees, heightening the mystery behind the alleged assault (in which the employee had been found in June 2005 in an alley behind the restaurant with a garden hose’s nozzle end stuck in his rectum).

Update

In December, News of the Weird summarized local newspaper reports that “more than 50 witnesses” in 30 pending lawsuits had accused Seattle-area physicians (and brothers) Charles and Dennis Momah of sexually abusing patients and, in some cases, of Dennis’ improperly impersonating Charles to patients. However, in May, according to the Seattle Times, the judge who presided over the first of the lawsuits concluded that the patient fabricated her story. Judge Katherine Stolz fined the patient’s lawyer, Harish Bharti (who represents most of the complainants), $300,000 for being complicit in the tale and ordered the patient to pay Dennis Momah $2.8 million for defamation.

Forest Toppled

A violent windstorm in Slovakia’s High Tatras National Park flattened at least 7,000 trees and prompted officials to consider planting varieties that can withstand such tempests. A previous storm in 2004 toppled more than 45 square miles of conifers in the same area. Park spokesman Marian Sturcel told reporters the latest storm damage, and that of 2004, will lead to a project to protect the country’s mountain forests from high winds by planting a wider variety of tree species.

The mysterious red rain that fell on the Indian state of Kerala during the summer of 2001 may have contained a strange life form of extraterrestrial origin, according to a scientist who has conducted an extensive analysis of rain samples. Writing in the journal Astrophysics and Space Science, Dr. Godfrey Louis says the samples contained bizarre, thickwalled, red-tinted cell-like structures that divide like living cells. The particles appear to lack DNA, yet still reproduce plentifully even in water superheated to 600 degrees Fahrenheit, Louis writes. He theorizes the particles came from a meteor or comet fragment that disintegrated above Kerala with a loud explosion, which was heard just prior to the red rain. A British team is now studying Louis’ samples to confirm

A leading Australian biologist says that genetic engineering could be the answer to ridding the country’s tropical north of the invasive and toxic cane toads that are destroying the region’s ecosystem. Peter Koopman, of the University of Queensland, told reporters that eradicating the pests is as simple as using gene therapy to create a variant that would produce only male offspring. His plan would require that large numbers of the genetically engineered cane toads be bred and introduced all around the north of the country. They would breed with the natural species to eventually produce entirely daughterless offspring. Cane toads were introduced to Queensland from Hawaii in 1935 in an effort to battle the cane beetles that were destroying the sugar cane crop. They have since reproduced by the millions and now cover a wide area. w

Cracker set to

ROCK the Legion

A talk with frontman David Lowery

It’s been over two decades since guitarist and songwriter David Lowery first gained notoriety in underground rock circles as the frontman for California slackers Camper Van Beethoven.

Critics’ darlings and cult phenoms (back when that truly meant something) for their faux-world beat punk rave-ups and granola-skewering absurdist rants, that brainy, unpredictable group of merry pranksters virtually defined North American psychedelic music in an era when such things simply could not have been less fashionable.

CVB —along with fellow foot soldiers like The Replacements, R.E.M., The Minutemen, Swimming Pool Q’s, They Might be Giants, the Pixies and others— literally carved what is now known as the “college rock” circuit out of a maze of community centers, rec rooms, pizza parlors and dive bars.

By the time that band split up in 1990 amid bickering, lackluster promotion and a creeping malaise, “alternative rock” was big business, and they had risen from pressing their own albums on the tiny indie label Pitch-ATent to signing with the massive Virgin Records, gaining no small amount of MTV exposure through vid-

eos for off-kilter singles like “Eye of Fatima, pt.1” and their faithful cover of the Status Quo nugget “Pictures of Matchstick Men.” Not long after Camper disbanded, Virgin exercised their option on Lowery, keeping him on while severing ties with the rest of the CVB family, many of whom continued (in an even headier and less commercial direction) as Monks of Doom.

Lowery reconnected with old friend and bandmate Johnny Hickman, and together they formed the songwriting duo known as Cracker — a leaner, meaner, more rootsy, classic-rock group (which still boasts a healthy dose of the Pink Floyd-ian drone and pomp of Camper).

Over the years, they’ve gone through several rhythm sections, but for some time now, the band (on record and on the road) has included CVB bassist Victor Krummenacher, former Del Lords drummer Frank Funaro, and veteran keyboardist Kenny Margolis. Together, this is perhaps the most versatile and dynamic version of the band yet, and the familiarity and musical telepathy they share is evident on their just-released CD Greenland, the band’s first all-new collection of studio material in almost half a decade, and their first since parting ways with Virgin.

man/CVB spirit— released on the same day as Virgin’s own “best of ” compilation, an album devised without input from the band, and which they saw as superfluous.

It’s that sort of headstrong, nosethumbing approach that many folks both admire and adore about Lowery and his associates — and that shines through in Cracker’s lyrical bent and delivery.

Thursday, June 22, local fans will have a rare opportunity to catch these rock legends up close when they play an intimate show in the Grand Ballroom of American Legion Post #135 on the Southern end of Forsyth Park (an event co-sponsored by Connect Savannah).

The mere fact that a band of their stature would appear at a 275-seat Legion Post on an international tour that finds them playing major outdoor festivals and 1,000seat venues is a testament to how deeply their DIY roots run.

As an avowed fan who’s followed the band faithfully since catching their official debut at Austin’s South By Southwest Festival, it was a treat for me to speak to Lowery about the evolution of this group, his days in the trenches at the forefront of the indie-rock revolution, and the fervent and loyal fans his group attracts. Here are highlights.

17 Connect Savannah: You and your dad used to hang a lot at a Legion post near your house, and now you’re playing one here.

David Lowery: My dad’s a veteran. He joined the Army Air Corps. I’ve spent a lot of time drinking in American Legion Post ... I think it’s 106. I know Camper played a VFW Hall or Legion Post in Fresno or Clovis, Ca. with a bunch of SST bands years ago, and we played another one recently in Bismarck, N.D., but membership had gotten really low, and so the downstairs was just some regular bar, and the Legion used the upstairs for their post.

Connect Savannah: Does it feel strange at all to be pushing a new album on a long tour?

Connect Savannah: How’s Europe for you?

David Lowery: It varies from territory to territory. When we go to London, we always sell out multiple nights at The Borderline.

In Glasgow, they absolutely love us, and I don’t know what the fuck is up with that! (laughs) It’s pretty cool, though. We really haven’t toured extensively there, but now we’re on (overseas label) Cooking Vinyl, so things are better. It’s not like you’d see us on the cover of NME or Q or anything. We’re not trendy over there, but we do have a strong following. It’s weird, but our biggest territory in the world (per capita wise), is actually Spain. Go figure! (laughs) Last time we were in Valencia, we sold out 1,200-seat places. We played in Majorca for like, 5,000 people. I’m at a loss.

Connect Savannah: Why would that be?

David Lowery: Well, we get our due in the press over there as being one of the pioneers of indie-rock, I guess, as well as alternative rock. We also were involved in the whole “alternative country” thing way before most anybody else was really doing it. Over here, we don’t necessarily get credit for that. It wasn’t until last year I think that No Depression wrote an article about Cracker and Camper Van. Connect Savannah: Did you feel vindicated, or was it just bemusing?

David Lowery: Well, it was a nice, long article, but kind of bemusing in a way. Actually, I really like No Depression because I think the editor or publisher or whatever just made a magazine about what he was into, and there’s very few of those out there.

Connect Savannah: That’s bizarre.

David Lowery: Yeah. It’s funny that we’d be considered that, as well as somebody like Death Cab For Cutie. I’m just trying to think of an “indie-rock” band that’s actually major label. There’s a bunch of ‘em. See, when we first started in Camper, to be an indie-rock band meant you weren’t punk rock and you weren’t mainstream rock.

That’s all it meant! You were just independent rock. The Meat Puppets, The Minutemen, Hüsker Dü —‘cause to a certain extent they dumped their punk thing for a more generalized rock sound with Zen Arcade— we were lumped into that along with Sonic Youth, The Feelies and a bunch of other good bands. It wasn’t art music. It was rock, and it was supposed to be palatable, though not unchallenging. More accessible. Not experimental. It was drawing upon the traditions of rock. And I mean, these are conversations I had with Curt Kirkwood, with d. boon, you know, with Bob Mould back in ‘85. I know what they were thinking. (laughs) I was there, and that’s what we all were talking about. Punk was dead and we felt we had to make our own style of rock for ourselves.

Connect Savannah: Are you at all surprised by how devoted Cracker’s following is?

David Lowery: Not really. See, we tend to play with a lot of those bands that don’t quite fit in categories. Like Lucero, or the Drive-By Truckers, or The Grateful Dead — people forget we played with them. We tend to be in that circle. I’m working now with Jason Molina who records under different names like Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Music Company. He doesn’t fit in, either. Punk bands open for us, but we’ve opened some shows for Lynyrd Skynyrd! It’s sort of nutty how we jump around as a band. But, I think we accurately reflect the majority of people’s record collections. How eclectic they truly are. And what any musician’s record collection looks like. And what any musician who’s just sitting around playing guitar with his friends will try to cover! David Lowery: It’s actually kind of comforting. We did some strange, specialized projects in the last couple years, like the country covers album and the record we did with Leftover Salmon, and of course the CVB reunion record which was fun. So, this is not that different, but it is nice to be back with Cracker and playing a whole buncha dates at once. When we don’t have a record out, we still play almost every weekend, but now we’re doing the whole country and then Europe as well.

That’s a great mag to be in. That said, Cracker isn’t really strict about playing any of that stuff. We see ourselves as just a rock band in the tradition of The Rolling Stones or maybe The Kinks, you know? I don’t think —especially with this record Greenland— we’re that different from a lot of CMJ type bands are doing right now. It’s funny that a lot of critics are calling this our “indie-rock record” now. (laughs)

Ask guitarist and singer Joshua Fletcher what his influences are, and he replies, “Love, heartbreak and revenge.” If that sounds a little melodramatic, then wait till you hear his songs. The Atlanta-based artist is doing the DIY thing, pressing his own CDs, playing everywhere from coffeehouses to hard rock bars with his current backing band, and networking via MySpace.

Self-confident, confessional women bearing acoustic guitars are a dime a dozen these days. Some have plenty of fresh insight or new perspectives to offer, but most don’t. In fact, most should channel that energy into something more idiosyncratic and less cliché. The award-winning Sam Shaber’s one who deserves as much support and celebration as she can get. Almost every aspect of her talent: solid fretwork; memorable melodies; ace vocal control; and a lyrical sense that’s rarely trite give her an edge over most of her ilk. She’s currently touring nationwide behind a captivating live CD, and has become a regular favorite at this venue, which says a lot.

Sinister Moustache, Hematovore

Gravy was without a doubt one of the most criminally overlooked original rock bands in the area. Of course, a lot of that was their own fault. Their style of confrontational, technical, mostly instrumental art-metal is just about the opposite of commercial. A new lineup and moniker (Sinister Moustache) hasn’t altered their carny prog-rock much, though, and anyone interested in one of the Savannah music scene’s best-kept secrets should make this gig. Auburn, Alabama’s Hematovore opens with a set of three-guitar instrumental thrash metal that’s loaded with melodic passages and local color.

Go, Speed Racer

Around the track with Paul Newman, one of the stars of Cars Paul Newman doesn’t suffer fools -- or entertainment reporters -- lightly.

The legendary actor was just one -- albeit the one -- of the many Cars stars on hand for the movie’s world premiere a couple of weeks ago at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C. Newman was unfailingly polite, yet brevity was his weapon when faced with vague, grasping or downright stupid questions.

(The most moronic: “Has there ever been talk about a sequel to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid?”) An avid race-car enthusiast (as well as a director, a humanitarian and a food-empire founder), Newman provides the voice for Doc Hudson, a 1951 Hudson Hornet who offers sound advice to the cocky race car Lightning McQueen.

Q: Was Cars a movie that you felt you wanted to do from the get-go, since it dealt with your passion for racing?

Paul Newman: I mainly did it because I knew it would be good, because it was from John Lasseter and Pixar. The fact that it was about racing was just a bonus.

Q: So exactly how did you go about preparing to play a car?

Paul Newman: The nice thing about animation is that you can detach yourself from all the physical stuff you normally work on as an actor and throw it away.

So this was relatively easy.

Q: You’re a great actor, you’ve won racing awards, you’ve been married to Joanne Woodward for nearly 50 years now, and you’re a damn handsome man. I’m hoping you have a flaw somewhere. How about it?

Paul Newman: Ask my wife. (Pauses, then smiles) Don’t look under the carpet. Lot of murky stuff going on there.

Q: You had been quoted as saying you were going to do one more movie. So is Cars the last one?

Paul Newman: Well, I don’t seem to be living up to my timetable. I may have one more movie in me after this one. I’m not sure what’s it going to be. [Robert] Redford

and I have been working on something -- we’ve been working on a script very hard -- but it’s by no means a slam dunk.

Q: You had the honor of being on Richard Nixon’s Enemies list.

Paul Newman: Highest single honor I’ve ever received.

Q: As a died-in-the-wool activist, what’s your take on the current political climate?

Paul Newman: You got 45 minutes? I think that’s pretty much recorded in the polls.

Most people don’t think we’re going in the right direction, and I agree with them.

Q: What would you say to someone who’s interested in becoming an activist?

Paul Newman: Engage. If people who have the privilege of voting don’t vote, then you have to ask if they’re getting what they deserve. We have less of a percentage of people who voted than in Iraq; that’s shameful.

If people get engaged, they can make the changes. If they don’t, then they just have a chauffeur up there motoring us where

he wants to go instead of us giving the directions.

Q: Given the theme of this film, do you have any road trip memory from your own life?

Paul Newman: Back in the 1950s, Joanne and I started a trip up north and drove to Las Vegas. And one casino there advertised all you can eat for a buck and a quarter.

And the spreads were extraordinary -- fresh shrimp and lobsters, tables laid out like I’d never seen them before. We had a lovely meal, and then Joanne put 160 bucks in the slot machine and I myself lost about $400.

So it was not really a buck and a quarter for all you could eat.

Q: What’s the secret to a long marriage?

Paul Newman: There’s a lot of baloney I could put out there for the record, but I haven’t the slightest idea, nothing that would hold any water.

Q: What’s the greatest racing tip you’ve ever received, maybe from another driver?

Paul Newman: Go fast. w

Woman may be eligible to participate if they are between the ages of 18 through 50, have fibrocystic breast disease (for example: nodules, fib cysts, fibrosis), and experience breast pain associated with their menstrual cycle. Other criteria apply.

Participation in this research study involves as many as eight visits to a local physician’s office for a period of eight months and includes study-related examinations, lab tests, and study-related medication.

And since we don’t care about the central plot thrust, we’re left to find the odd pleasure here and there: the sharp supporting turn by Judy Davis as a haughty art gallery owner; the startling vulgarities uttered by Gary’s sleazeball brother (Cole Hauser); and, best of all, the scenes between Vaughn and his Swingers co-star Jon Favreau, here cast as Gary’s intriguing friend Johnny O.

Director Bryan Singer, best known for The Usual Suspects, was entrusted with turning the valuable Marvel Comics property into a motion picture, and he proved to be the right man for the job with the 2000 hit X-Men. Singer returned for 2003’s X2, and, bucking the trend, managed to make a followup that equaled its predecessor on nearly every level. There’s a fine movie trapped inside The Break-Up, and it’s a shame that it couldn’t break free. As it stands, here’s a picture whose many fine ingredients are never able to compensate for the staggering miscalculation that cripples the piece almost immediately. Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston play Gary and Brooke, whose initial meeting and courtship are dealt with during the opening credits. From there, an argument over a dinner party proves to be the catalyst for the pair deciding to call it quits. Secretly, Brooke doesn’t want to break up -- she only wants Gary to appreciate her more -- but as time crawls along, the hostility between the pair increases, and it becomes apparent that there’s simply no saving this relationship. From the start, Gary is painted as a self-centered, insensitive man-child whose greatest passions are video games and baseball; the only reason audiences like this character at all is because he’s played by the char-

Just My Luck marks a major career stumble, as Lohan suddenly finds herself in the sort of drivel usually snatched up by arch-rival Hilary Duff.

Based on a comic strip with which I’m thoroughly -- and, if it’s anything like this movie, thankfully -- unfamiliar, Over the Hedge is yet another charmless animated feature made by profiteers whose historical reference point seems to begin and end with Shrek. An opportunistic raccoon (Bruce Willis), in hock to a grouchy grizzly (Nick Nolte), cons a group of peaceful forest denizens into helping him invade suburbia and steal the humans’ junk food. There’s a witty sequence in which the raccoon explains how the humans “live to eat� rather than “eat to live,� and a nicely delivered Stanley Kowalski gag make me chuckle out loud. Otherwise, this DreamWorks production feels like a flat-footed attempt to rip off the Pixar template.

One would have to travel deep into the 1990s -- during the era of Mrs. Doubtfire and The Birdcage -- to find a comedic Robin Williams performance that was more than simply incessant and annoying shtick.

RV, therefore, marks the first time in at least a decade that Williams merges his patented humor with a recognizably human character, and the balance suits him well.

The original Poseidon Adventure was one of the first disaster flicks and it arguably remains the best. The Oscar-winning visual effects hold up; the Oscar-winning song “The Morning After� does not. Come next spring, I doubt we’ll be similarly mentioning the new Poseidon and Oscars in the same sentence, since this is as forgettable as motion pictures can get.

Look, I’m as sick of hearing about Tom Cruise’s offscreen nonsense as anyone else.

But the great thing about the magic of the movies is that it immerses us in fantasy worlds that more often than not allow us to disengage from real-life baggage. In other words, Cruise is accomplished -- and canny -- enough to know that a well-oiled summer flick is just the item to make us all forgive him -- at least temporarily -- for his indiscretions. Writer-director Paul Greengrass’ superb 9/11 docudrama United 93 is one of those movies that should be seen, but it’s understandable that many viewers won’t want to see it, and no amount of critical hosannas will change their minds. It’s a testament to the movie’s power that we find ourselves praying for a safe landing even though history has long dictated otherwise. How restrained is Greengrass’ approach? Understand that passenger Todd Beamer’s catchphrase “Let’s roll� -- you know, the one that’s been co-opted by seemingly every politician and pundit from coast to coast -is barely audible when Beamer speaks it.
