I called Georgia Power about it Thursday, when they clearly had much more pressing problems to take care of. Still, I thought they would want to know about the hazard. I let a real, live person know about the branch and exactly where it was, and was assured something would be done about it.

Daniel Robinson knows exactly what he wants to do.

The owner of a River Street bar, Robinson told the Savannah City Council June 19 that he wants to transition into a full-service restaurant.

“We’ve been in operation less than 6 months,” he said. “Right now, we are a bar. I elected to be a bar at this time because I didn’t want anyone under 21 until we had a kitchen and were ready to become a full-service establishment.”

Shortly after Robinson spoke, the council approved ordinances setting regulations and fees for full-service restaurants that transition into bars after food service has ended for the day.

While Robinson is proposing to do the exact opposite by transitioning a bar into a restaurant, the rules will apply to his business in the same way.

The ordinances become effective in 60 days. Getting them to the table was an often contentious

proposition, with numerous public hearings and informational meetings.

“Our whole purpose was that any establishment that seeks to sell alcohol and not have food either needs to be a bar or have this special transitional license,” City Manager Michael Brown said. “It would require a number of steps by an establishment to ensure that there are no underage patrons.”

The proposed ordinances were posted online, Brown said. “We had a number of public meetings,” he said. “We listened to representatives of the industry, as well as individual business owners. The council’s suggestions have been incorporated.”

A vote on the ordinances was postponed from June 5 so that Mayor Otis Johnson could be present for the vote.

All things considered, things could certainly have been worse.

bars. The ordinances are aimed at restaurants that offer music after regular hours when food service has ended.

Anyone under 21 will be required to leave the restaurant at a certain time. Owners/managers are asked to set this time and submit a detailed operating plan on how the transition will work.

An ordinance amending the city’s revenue ordinance also was approved so that regulatory fees can be collected from participating businesses. That ordinance is not meant to raise money for the city, but instead to recoup costs of added inspections that will be required.

This fee for the transitional license is $250 per year, but a $125 prorated fee will apply for the remainder of 2008. This cost is in addition to the regular alcohol license fee.

Under the ordinance, restaurants must designate and post a consistent time that people under 21 must leave. The time will appear on the restaurant’s license, and must be followed each and every day of the year and may not be changed until the license is renewed.

“We had an added suggestion that the posted time that transitions should occur could not be later than midnight,” Brown said.

“We think that’s reasonable.

“We recommended a $250 annual fee,” he said. “If we see any problems whatsoever, we’ll add an inspection fee of $125. If they violate the ordinance in any way, we’ll immediately call for revocation of the license.”

All servers and bartenders will be required to receive training to earn certification. This training must be completed by Dec. 30.

Mike Vaquer of the Georgia Restaurant Association said members now support the ordinances.

“We want to thank you for the efforts of your staff for working through what turned out be a rather difficult ordinance to deal with,” he told the council.

“We think a very good compromise has been reached,” Vaquer says.“That gives us the certainty and clarity we wanted. We agree with the language changes and accept the concept of added training.”

Alderman Tony Thomas said the ordinance was not intended to hurt businesses.

“It’s very flexible when you look at other tourist cities,” he said.

“Other cities force a time and everyone must do it by that time.

We’re giving you the choice.”

Alderman Van Johnson said most restaurants won’t be affected by the new ordinances. “I want to be clear the primary issue was to keep individuals under 21 out of establishments that act as bars or clubs,” he said.

“It might be that only 10 restaurants might choose to do this,” Johnson said.

“With the majority of restaurants, this affects them zero. We’re not kicking families out, we’re not saying if someone is here with their son or daughter, they have to get out,” he said.

“If they’re going to change their appearance to that of a bar or club, they have to tell the people up front, ‘This is posted, this is the time you need to be gone from here.’ Hopefully through a very intensive public education campaign, we will make sure people know the majority of restaurants in the community will not be affected.”

Even restaurants that provide live entertainment won’t be affected -- as long as they keep serving food.

“The whole point of the ordinance is to say there must be food service when

underage patrons are in the establishment,” Brown said.

Alderman Jeff Felser said the ordinance should be placed in the entire context of which it arose.

“The only ones affected are those who are opting to change from a fullservice restaurant into a bar,” he says.

“The whole point has been our attempt to allow our businesses to be extra business friendly.”

Vaquer said copies of the ordinances will be distributed to the association’s membership. “This is something that is voluntary,” he said. “It’s not mandatory.

They choose to opt in. This only effects what we’ve started calling a ‘hybrid.’”

Mayor Otis Johnson said the ordinance doesn’t include any mention of musicians or entertainment.

“There is no way this will impair bars that have music, restaurants that have music, hybrids that have music,” he said.

“The trigger here is whether food service is going on. They have to have food service if there are underage patrons. It does not impact music and entertainment.”

The nation’s first experimental garden is returning to form, with a 21st century twist. Begun soon after Oglethorpe founded Savannah in 1733, Trustees Garden was intended as a research center of sorts for what was hoped to be a thriving local silk industry.

That particular vision didn’t work out, but there’s a new one at Trustees Garden, courtesy of new owner Charles H. Morris, who recently purchased the historic tract. (Morris also owns Connect Savannah.) A local farmers market is part of the garden’s new identity as a center of organic, sustainable living.

The next event takes place July 2 from 4-8 p.m. at Trustees Garden at East Broad and Bay Streets, perhaps more commonly known as the location of the Pirates House. Expect seasonal veggies, fresh herbs, nursery plants, organic compost, food from local organic restaurants in town, eco-friendly art, honey-based products from the Savannah Bee Company, and coffee and tea from the Sentient Bean.

One of the people implementing the new (or is it the old?) vision for Trustees Garden is “Farmer D,” aka Daron Joffe.

The former vice president for Georgia Organics has made a name for himself as one of the area’s main sustainability advocates. Farmer D’s in charge of the actual “garden” at Trustees Garden, currently a quarter-acre tract, but is also helping with the overall vision.

“We’re bringing back Trustees Garden as historical garden with modern relevance to issues of food security, nutrition, organic farming and

gardening,” Farmer D says. “Because this garden was the first experimental garden in America, older than the state of Georgia, and was intended originally as an agricultural experiment, it made a lot of sense to me that this would be a great project to bring that same concept back to life, because we need it as much today as they did then, if not more so.”

Farmer D says Trustees Garden has a role to play in helping people weather the current food shortage, which is exacerbated by rising fuel costs.

“We’re facing in my lifetime what is the first real food crisis,” he says.

“So we’re going to have a monthly market, and hopefully soon a weekly market, that has a series of educational programs that looks at these issues and helps connect people closer to their food—growing it and cooking it.”

Farmer D’s involvement was concurrent with the hiring of a site manager, Tate Hudson, known for his longtime role at the Sentient Bean. Hudson became involved with Trustees Garden while working Savannah Music Festival events at the Morris Center on the same site, and then ended up getting hired on as the Center’s site manager.

Hudson says Savannah is uniquely positioned for an effort like Trustees Garden, for several reasons.

“Charleston’s farmers market is sort of the benchmark, but they don’t have a historical garden and fresh fish and cheeses,” the latter component being something Hudson says is in future plans for Trustees Garden. continues on page 10

At one point, Hudson and Farmer D found themselves in a room brainstorming ideas for Trustees Garden.

“Farmer D and I sat down one day and talked about what we could do to get some interest going and turn people on to the fact that there’s this amazing thing going on down here with this historic garden, and of course just the story behind Mr. Morris’s vision for entire property,” Hudson says.

Eventually they settled on the first step of a farmers market, a “soft launch” for which happened earlier in June.

“Those people who are always at the forefront of community action in town, or who just want to see something great happen in Savannah, came out. So we realized we were on to something,” he says. “We then wanted to get some people together and pick their brains and say, ‘We have this market, we have this infrastructure, we have farmers and vendors and restaurants who want to be involved, we have the first experimental garden in America right here—how can we bring all this together?’”

Hudson says the farmers market is only a first step of what’s hoped to be a fullfledged “urban education farm.”

“We’re at the point of organizing committees and talking in terms of education from top to bottom, from kids to middle

school to high school to adults, master gardening to historical research,” he says.

“We want to be a place people can come and purchase family-produced local products, and hang out and learn,” echoes Farmer D. “We want to make that available to everybody in Savannah, irrelevant of their socioeconomic status, if they’re a tourist or a local, a five-year-old or 95-year-old.

We’re striving to bring local farmers in with seasonal produce and let people come

and do their shopping there, fresh-fromthe-barn shopping, and feel like they can hang out.”

Hudson says a key part of that “festival feel” will be hosting sustainability lectures and book signings.

“We’ll be bringing folks in who are sort of gurus in different fields to do different presentations, whether it’s gardening or a cooking class,” he says. “We’ll maybe have a book signing and then a lecture and presentation, all in that 4-8 p.m. window.”

That said, it all begins with the garden itself. The seed, so to speak, came from a Union Mission grant that Farmer D applied for to help connect low-income people to local farmers and teach them about growing their own food.

“Working with Union Mission I saw a couple of venues in Savannah for a garden to serve as an educational venue, and Trustees was one of the sites,” he says. “I got invited to some of the Trustees Garden charrettes through the Project for Public Spaces, and as I engaged in these brainstorming sessions it became more and more apparent that a garden was an important first step in redeveloping the site.”

Farmer D began farming organically in the mid-1990s at age 17. “I got into it out of curiosity about where my food comes from and it turned into a real passion,” he says.

“I was always really driven by education and social justice, but using agriculture and organic farming as the medium,” says Farmer D. “I love growing healthy food for people and seeing what it does for people’s lives and for communities.”

High winds at Camp Low

Over the weekend I spent some time with my friend Selden Frissell, comparing notes on our experiences as campers at Camp Low, on Rose Dhu Island at the southern tip of Chatham County.

Selden, soon to be in second grade and currently a Brownie Girl Scout, returned home Friday from a week at Camp Low. For five or six years in the 60’s and 70’s, I spent two weeks at that same Girl Scout camp each summer. Decades apart, our experiences had many similarities.

The lodge that doubles as dining hall; the flagpole area that hosts morning and evening ceremonies; the Tidewater and Whitecaps cabin areas with separate latrine facilities featuring cold-water showers; the swimming pool at the far end of camp; the wooden walkway through the marsh onto the canoeing dock; all look or sound about the same as they did during my Junior Girl Scout days.

The changes to Camp Low are upgrades of fundamental services rather than cosmetic improvements. My recollection of Rose Dhu is of a rustic place, with minimal human intrusion. Electricity on Rose Dhu in my era was confined to the common areas—the lodge, the infirmary, the canteen that sold ice cream sandwiches, stamps, and bug spray.

Electric power has extended to the cabins at some point in recent decades, bringing overhead lights and ceiling fans to what was once a flashlights-only set up.

The girls still have an hour each day set aside for cleaning the camp, but lights in the latrines and the activity buildings have eliminated the chore of cleaning and refilling kerosene lamps. From my grownup vantage point I’m a little stunned that, back in the day, 10 year olds with teenaged supervisors routinely wrangled jugs of flammable fuel as part of our camp experience, rubbing away the soot from the glass globes of the hurricane lanterns with handfuls of Spanish moss.

Singing as a group is still a core camp pastime, but the repertoire has changed.

Last summer at a pool party in Coffee Bluff, an old Camp Low buddy and I belted out Verse One of “Barges” as her children watched in horror and our adult friends, claiming they didn’t know the words, refused to participate. Selden tells me that “Barges” isn’t in this generation’s camp song list, but when she launched “I’m taking home a baby bumblebee…” I was able to follow her lead for most of it.

A short camp grace is still sung before each meal, but the folksy Johnny Appleseed song—“Oh, the Lord is good to me, and so I thank the Lord…”—has been

replaced with the more vibrant “Thank you LORD, for giving us FOOD…” sung to the theme from Star Wars, released the year after my camp career ended.

As camp adventures go, Selden’s experience last Thursday will top anything we had in the old days. Selden attended an arts oriented session called Making Camp Memories. Thursday afternoon’s weather created memories that the girls on Rose Dhu will be talking about to their daughters.

Selden did a thorough job of describing the high winds, rain and hail that roared through camp during “Turtle Time,” the quiet hour after lunch formerly known as nap time. Lori Ross, Program Director for the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, who own and operate Camp Low, confirmed most of Selden’s version of the story and filled in some details.

During camp season, Ross spends her office hours on site. When Thursday’s high wind sirens sounded, she and other camp leaders radioed to the counselors, moving ampers from their cabins or tents through the rain “and a little bit of hail” to designated safe zones. Selden’s group ended up in the concrete pool house, where a few dozen girls and a handful of adults spent the next hour or so.

“It was scary for the girls, they didn’t know why they had to run through the rain,” says Ross. “They were singing songs to keep them occupied.”’

Damage was minor overall, but had a huge impact on a group of 5th to 9th grade Scouts, spending the week in a sleeping unit comprised of eight canvas army-style tents set up on wooden platforms. Three of the tents blew away, and most personal belongings went with them. Other girls’ things blew out from tents that remained standing, or were soaked from incoming rain. After the storm, camp staff collected all personal effects from the tent unit and piled them in an activity building.

“We bought 35 sleeping bags and towels so they would have something dry to sleep in, and that night we had a big slumber party in the lodge,” says Ross.

The fire department responded quickly to a fallen branch that “came down on one of the power lines, it was sparking a little bit,” says Ross. “Georgia Power got the limb off the wire, and restored our power for us, by the time I left for home at 10:30 the power was back on.”

“All the girls were really very upbeat, even the girls whose stuff was wet,” says Ross. “Everybody got their stuff back, it was just a little wet and a little dirty.

When they were leaving camp the next daythey said, ‘Yeah, this was fun. We had a good week.’ ”

More baby daddy issues

A Noble Oaks Drive resident told police that his girlfriend’s “baby daddy” had pulled a gun on him.

After speaking with the man and his girlfriend, the officers learned the suspect’s name is on the lease for the woman’s apartment.

The man hasn’t been living there, but showed up unannounced and began arguing with the woman about the presence of her new boyfriend. The suspect went to his car and retrieved a gun, which he took in the apartment and pointed at the man. The woman was advised to have the suspect’s name taken off the lease.

• An officer on routine patrol on Quacco Road observed a small child wearing only a diaper sitting on the side of the road. The child appeared to be very dirty.

When the officer approached the house, he saw a second child, lying face down on

the porch. This child was wearing a shirt and a diaper and also was very dirty.

The second child was screaming and crying. He had a 2-inch bruise below his left eye. A third child also was found at the residence.

The officer knocked on the door and spoke with a woman who said she was the children’s mother. When asked why she wasn’t supervising them, she replied, “I was in the back room and they never come outside.”

The woman was then asked how one of the children got the bruise under his eye.

She replied, “He fell down the porch.” An investigation is continuing.

• A West Derenne Avenue resident encouraged her daughter to fight a woman she was having problems with, but called police after others became involved in the fight. The woman said her daughter had been getting harassing phone calls all day from the suspect.

When the suspect called again and said she was outside, the daughter mixed some chemicals in a cup, ran outside and threw them at the suspect’s car. However, the suspect had brought a group of people with her and a fight broke out.

During the altercation, the mother said she was hit in the back with a baseball bat.

However no marks or bruising were seen.

She said her daughter received a cut on her right foot when someone threw a beer bottle that landed at her feet. EMS treated the cut on the scene. An officer recovered a knife and aluminum pole from the scene.

• A man required immediate medical attention after falling on his bicycle at Liberty and Barnard streets.

When police arrived, the man was standing on the sidewalk.

He had a large cut above his right eye that was bleeding profusely. The man smelled strongly of alcohol and appeared to be intoxicated.

The man’s bicycle had a bent front wheel and was lying on the sidewalk. He also had a small green bag that he said contained a handgun. When asked if he had a weapons permit, the man said he didn’t.

• An officer was at the intersection of Reynolds Street and Washington Avenue when a red car made a quick stop and proceeded south on Reynolds Street, failing to yield to oncoming traffic and nearly caus-

ing an accident.

The driver also ran the stop sign on the median.

A traffic stop was conducted, and the woman driving the car rolled down her window. A strong odor of alcohol emanated from the car. The woman’s speech was slurred and her eyes were bloodshot.

When asked why she ran the stop sign, the woman said, “I didn’t see the car coming.” When asked if she’d had anything to drink, she said. “No.” The woman agreed to take a breath test, which showed positive. Once again, she was asked if she had anything to drink, and she said, “Three or four glasses of Strong Bow cider.”

In addition to the breath test, the woman agreed to a field test. During the walk-and-turn test, she didn’t pay attention to the instruction part and failed that test, too.

The short answer: It depends on who’s doing it and what results you expect.

Chiropractic was dreamed up in Davenport, Iowa, in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer. Palmer was a devotee of phrenology, magnetic therapy, and other metaphysically inclined notions of the era, and he conceived of chiropractic as a “philosophy, art, and science” of healing. Its core premises: (1) the body is possessed of an “innate intelligence” that permits it, under ordinary circumstances, to repair itself as needed; (2) this innate intelligence is transmitted through the nervous system, and disease is usually caused by disruptions in the “nerve flow” resulting from “subluxation,” or misalignment, of the vertebrae; therefore (3) pretty much any ailment can be treated by manual adjustments to the spine. (Hence the chiro- part, from a Greek root meaning “hand”; practice means “practical,” as opposed to theoretical.) Such an adjustment would typically consist of an abrupt push or pull on the back or neck, involving about the same range of movement as cracking your knuckles.

(In conventional medicine, a subluxation is a standard-issue partial dislocation, the kind of thing that’s easily spotted on an X-ray. So when chiropractors appropriated the term to describe typically imperceptible spinal abnormalities or functional problems that don’t lend themselves to direct observation—well, I won’t say it’s been the biggest barrier to mainstream acceptance of chiropractic, but it hasn’t helped.)

Palmer was in no small part a wacko, but this hardly differentiated him from many other quasimedical pioneers of the era. What’s alarming is that there are many chiropractors working today who haven’t progressed much beyond Palmer’s initial precepts. These old-school types, known as traditional or philosophy-based chiropractors, still insist that spinal manipulation improves health by restoring the body’s “neural homeostasis.” Generally, such chiropractors don’t bother with clinical diagnosis or medical examination; adjustments aren’t

necessarily a cure for what ails you but often a means of managing it long-term, meaning patients come in for multiple treatments over an extended period of time. Is this quackery? The continued existence of philosophy-based chiropractic suggests that some patients at least are experiencing results they’re OK with. Let’s just say I’ve got my doubts.

On the other side you’ve got a significant number of chiropractors who’ve been more receptive to medical insights gleaned over the past century.

Such new-breed chiropractors are often affiliated with hospitals or doctors’ practices and typically conduct thorough intake exams (including X-rays, MRIs, etc) as a matter of course. They’ll use spinal manipulation to treat non-disease-related back disorders, but they’re willing to break out some other tools in the therapeutic toolbox as well, which may include ultrasound, electric muscle stimulation, rehab exercises, and the like; they’ll also provide suggestions about lifting and bending techniques, diet, and ergonomics. Science-friendly chiropractors tend to have good success rates in combating lower back pain and tension headaches.

As you might imagine, scientific studies haven’t turned up much in support of the traditional chiropractic worldview. Thus, tweaking the vertebrae in the neck probably isn’t going to help anyone’s ear infection. There is clear evidence, though, that spinal adjustment can provide relief for acute back troubles, widening range of motion, improving function, and decreasing pain.

Writing last year in the Journal of Human Hypertension, a team of medical researchers reported on a placebo-controlled study in which people suffering from high blood pressure received a particular chiropractic adjustment to the C-1 or Atlas vertebra, which holds up the head. What happened? The procedure did in fact realign the vertebra with the rest of the spinal column, and the patients who underwent it showed significantly lower blood pressure for a sustained period afterward.

So if you’re suffering from lower back pain, is chiropractic worth a shot?

First see a doctor and rule out any underlying disease. Keep in mind that if spinal adjustment is going to help, you should see real improvement within a few weeks. And make sure to find a chiropractor who’s operating on a 21stcentury scientific model; if you hear “subluxation,” just keep walking.

Straying residents might be attracted to the familiar colors and design of the kiosk (because long-term memory is typically still robust) and wait there for a bus instead of trying to “go home” on foot. But short-term, the resident is typically unaware of how long he has been waiting and will remain until a Centre employee sees him and can guide him back into the home (which often is easy because the resident has by then forgotten why he is sitting there, according to a June dispatch from Berlin in London’s Daily Telegraph).

BBC filmmakers announced in June that they had captured, for perhaps the first time ever, an episode of pandas mating in the wild, for the “Wild China” TV series. A male is shown fighting off other males to coax a female down from a tree.

What follows that, said producer Glenn Maxwell, are “loud calls which will make viewers think instantly of the Wookie character from the ‘Star Wars’ movies. I liken it to Chewbaccas in a pub brawl.”

Eventually, the female descends, and the pair get to work, “breathing hard and panting,” said Maxwell. “You can see the steam coming out of their mouths.”

Animals in Trouble: (1) China’s Xinhua news agency reported in March that a farmer in Jilin province had been found with a tortoise that is addicted to nicotine.

The farmer, a smoker himself, said he was surprised when the pet puffed on a cigarette he had playfully stuck in its mouth, and since then, he occasionally shares smokes with it. (2) Magistrates in Sunderland, England, accepted a guilty plea in June from Samantha Pearson and David Step for animal cruelty. The couple had relocated quarters last October but left behind a pet, Milly, to starve to death.

Bright Ideas Minor league pitcher John Odom was traded in May by the Calgary Vipers of the independent Golden Baseball League to the Laredo Broncos of the independent United League, but his exchanged counterpart balked at leaving the U.S. for the Canadian team. Update Methane’s longstanding menace as a climate-altering greenhouse gas is closer than ever to being controlled, said New Zealand scientists in June after genomemapping found the source of flatulence in ruminant animals, and the researchers said they thought they could vaccinate against it. The latest crop losses have resulted from weeks of incessant storms that submerged vast tracts of fertile land across America’s breadbasket. Even if drier weather were to return within the next two weeks, it is becoming too late in the season for farmers to successfully replant their crops.

The U.S. losses come on the heels of acute crop losses due to drought in Australia’s wheat belt and a complete loss of southern Myanmar’s rice crop due to Cyclone Nargis in early May.

Record Monsoon India’s annual southwest monsoon blew into New Delhi on the earliest date ever recorded. It also caused deadly floods in the northeast of the country that killed at least 30 people and left more than 300,000 others homeless. Troops worked to rescue marooned villagers who had taken refuge on elevated highways and embankments after bursting levees caused vast tracts of farmland to become submerged. The Indian Meteorological Department says this year’s northward advance of the

monsoon rainfall has occurred without any breaks, rather than in the pulses that normally spread it across the Indian subcontinent.

Healthy Ozone Scientists from Columbia University say they have determined that the eventual healing of the ozone hole over Antarctica during the second half of this century may significantly alter Earth’s surface climate.

Analyzing projections by various climate models, a team of 10 scientists found that a return to a normal southern stratospheric ozone layer could have profound impacts on surface winds and other aspects of the Earth’s climate. Changes would occur in surface temperatures, locations of storm tracks, extent of dry zones, amount of sea ice and ocean circulation, the Columbia team said.

Earthquakes A violent 7.0 magnitude earthquake killed at least 10 people and injured dozens more in northern Japan. The quake was centered in a largely agricultural region but it was strong enough to shake buildings 300 miles to the

south in Tokyo. • A 4.5 magnitude aftershock of China’s devastating May 25 temblor killed two more people in Shaanxi province. The death toll from the initial jolt has reached 69,172 with another 17,420 still missing, Xinhua reports. The agency also said that more than 80 percent of the country’s giant panda habitat was either damaged or destroyed by the May temblor.

Fourth of July fireworks might seem tame to Matt Stromberg.

The Savannah College of Art and Design professor of foundation studies and sculpture uses rocket fuel, explosives, pyrotechnics, propellants and munitions to create earth-shattering art. These energetic materials are used to manipulate metal, wood and paper -- using destruction to create art.

Stromberg’s creations include sculpted metal panels. He’s also used a submachine gun to create pigment-infused solid rocketfuel paint that is literally shot into stone.

“I think it stems from a long-term interest in energetic materials,” Stromberg says.

“Recently, with the birth of my daughter, my wife and I were thinking about what we are going to teach her. I want to encourage her to seek out things in life she finds interesting.

“I’ve always liked energetic materials,” he says. “I think the risk-taking is a big part of it, which is probably a key element of being an artist.”

Stromberg first began experimenting with energetic materials last year. It’s not something for the faint of heart. “I would say it’s very dangerous,” Stromberg says.

Special licensing is required to handle some of the materials Stromberg uses. That can get expensive, but a SCAD Presidential Fellowship for Faculty Development is helping with those costs.

It’s also providing funds for research and safety training with Explosives Educational

Services Inc. in Texas. “Lately, I’ve been watching hours of safety films,” Stromberg says. “Doing this makes you really focus on safety. It’s all about concentration, education.

I follow the safety protocols.”

In July, Stromberg will conduct research at testing facilities owned by Accurate Energetic Systems, LLC in McEwen, Tenn. The company, which manufactures explosive compositions and specialty products, has a variety of testing areas with trained personnel and safety managers available at all times.

The creation of explosive art can’t be done in a studio. “I have a couple of sites I use,” Stromberg says. “For more dangerous work, I use acreage in Effingham County that’s owned by a colleague.

“He has full permission from his neighbors,” Stromberg says. “Everything I do is completely legal.”

Yes, it’s noisy. “But only for a moment,” Stromberg says.

The processes used in creating this type of art are as important as the finished pieces.

Someone watching Stromberg might assume that his artwork is produced randomly, but that’s isn’t the case.

“I have an idea of what I want to do,” Stromberg says. “I spend a lot of time trying to complete that.”

But there are surprises. “A lot of times, the event will lead in a different direction.”

Stromberg says. “The material tells me what it wants to do. I think it’s all one continuous learning process.”

It’s not hard to find some energetic ma-

terials. “Everything I use may be found at a grocery store,” Stromberg says.

These days, Stromberg is spending most of his time doing research and development.

“I’m learning about the properties of the materials,” he says.

“A lot of material comes through federal or state licensing,” Stromberg says. “For the submachine-gun art, I spent a year paying federal fees in order to purchase the materials.”

At times, Stromberg must get permission from the U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to do a project. “No hazardous waste can be associated with my work,” he says.

While Stromberg’s methods are unusual, he insists his art is not that much different from drawing, painting or sculpting. “All art involves a certain amount of investigation and research, research, research,” he says. “It’s liberating, like a lot of art is.

“I think it’s really a fancy way of doing what every artist does,” Stromberg says. “The result is the same as if I grabbed a chunk of charcoal and drew on paper I was going to detonate.”

Ideas come from many sources. “I was talking with a fellow professor, a stone carver,” Stromberg says. “I was watching him work with a pneumatic chisel, which quickly moves material from a large block.

“I wondered if the neighbors were upset about the sounds,” he says. “We talked about our interest in shooting, and I wondered if I continues on page 19

could actually carve with a submachine gun.

“I found that the concept of using a submachine gun was dynamic and fascinating to the imagination,” Stromberg says. “It’s a nice idea to be able to find a way to be creative and clear up misconceptions.”

Stromberg uses rocket fuel to create a paste with pigments that can be shot out of the submachine gun. Exotic, yes, but it incorporates the same elements as oil paints. “It’s applied in solid chunks,” he says.

Because Stromberg is so careful as he works, he hasn’t even had a close call. “I think the materials can be dangerous, but so far I’ve been lucky,” he says. “I hope to keep it that way.”

Stromberg plans to keep doing even more training and research. “I’ll be stepping up the magnitude of the explosives,” he says. “There are so many different types of energetic materials. There is always something else to research and try.”

For a while, Stromberg kept his work private, especially from his students.

“In the last year, I started letting it out,” he says. “My YouTube site went from a dozen hits to a few hundred.”

Stromberg’s wife, Shea, is supportive.

“She’s happy I’m excited about it, that it gives me a lot of pleasure,” he says. “But at times, she’s probably quietly terrified.”

Their daughter, Porter Rose, better known as “Poppy,” is 17 months old. “I will encourage her to seek out anything that interests her,” Stromberg says. “I don’t think people should shy away from things that interest them because of unpopular connotations.”

In November, Stromberg will show his work at the Hall Street Gallery.

Those who have already viewed it are impressed.

“I haven’t heard any negative comments,” Stromberg says. “I think people are fascinated by the materials. I usually get a look of awe and shock.”

“There are a few artists out there who are working with energetic materials,” Stromberg says. “I don’t know of any who are working with this many materials, though.

“There’s a lot of room out there for people who do this work,” he says.

“Competition helps drive creativity. But I don’t recommend anyone trying to do something with energetic materials unless they’ve had safety training and have covered all the legal aspects.”

Greek tragedy

Bestselling author presents story of two influential women in Stealing Athena by linda sickler | linda@connectsavannah.com

Two galleries, thousands of miles apart, both built to hold a group of ancient Greek sculptures that are known as the Elgin Marbles.

One gallery is filled with ancient treasures. The other stands empty, despite an international outcry to return the marbles to their original home in Greece.

It sounds like a plot from a novel, but the struggle is real. The British Museum has held the marbles, which once comprised nearly half of the Parthenon, for more than 200 years after they were removed and shipped to England.

Bestselling author Karen Essex has woven a historical novel, Stealing Athena, around the story of the Elgin Marbles.

It tells the stories of two women - one who was present for the creation of the marbles, the other who was present for their deconstruction.

Essex was in Savannah recently to visit her friend, Rosemary Daniell, and to conduct a Zona Rosa writer’s workshop on Tybee Island. “Rosemary is an old friend of mine,” Essex says. “We were introduced

by Bruce Feiler, who’s also a Savannah native who’s become a well-known writer.”

Essex’s own life could provide inspiration for a novel. A native of New Orleans, she’s had several successful careers that have taken her around the world.

“I left New Orleans right after graduation from Tulane,” Essex says. “I moved to Paris and was a model, then went to Los Angeles to pursue film production.

I worked my way into an executive position and worked for Blake Edwards and several other production companies.”

Her own writing career began shortly after. “After I read several bad screenplays, I thought, ‘Surely I can do better than that,’” Essex says.

Since then, Essex has written and adapted several screenplays, including, most recently, a dance movie for Jennifer Lopez Entertainment and Paramount Pictures. She’s adapted her own novels, Kleopatra and Pharaoh, into a screenplay for Warner Bros. and has adapted Anne Rice’s novel The Mummy for Titanic director James Cameron. Her third novel, Leonardo’s Swans, about two sisters who posed for Leonardo Da Vinci, became an international bestseller.

The novels are historical epics that require extensive research. “I love it,” Essex says. “I can’t even explain why.”

was Cleopatra in a previous life. “I might have been Julius Caesar, but I certainly wasn’t Cleopatra,” she laughs. “I’m really fascinated with the ancient world.”

Stealing Athena tells the story of Mary Elgin, the wife of Lord Elgin, who was responsible for taking the marbles to England. It also tells the story of Aspasia, mistress of Pericles.

“I decided to take this on as a book because, one, the poor Greeks have been trying to get the marbles back for 200 years, and, two, because I write about powerful women and history,” Essex says.

“When I found out it was actually Lady Elgin with the money, brains, charisma and know-how to convince the sultan to allow Elgin to take those statues, I knew then it was a story for me to tell.”

Despite Lady Elgin’s attempts to help her husband, he later divorced her on charges of adultery, a scandal that resulted in tabloid coverage that lasted for months.

She also was kept away from her children.

“It’s just heartbreaking the price that she paid,” Essex says. “I decided to write the book from the point of view of both women.”

Asphasia, too, paid a price. A philosopher, she had major influence on Pericles, which was deeply resented by others. She was indicted on charges of impiety and conspiring to draft women into prostitution, charges that were trumped-up.

“I think their stories resonate,” Essex says. “Women do pay a price for ambition. It’s always been a more treacherous world for us girls. The conversation of

women’s place in society was going on in Asphasia’s day, and the same conversation is going on today.”

All women’s history is hidden history, Essex says. “If you pick up a textbook, you won’t find out very much about women.

We’ve been basically dropped from the historical record. I don’t think it was a male conspiracy to do that. History traditionally is written about battles and conquest. Women were not a direct part of that, so women’s accomplishments went unsung.”

She says that without these women in their lives, men could not have accomplished “a fraction of what they accomplished.”

“People have been using female knowhow and talent all along, they’re just not giving women credit.”

Essex first saw the Elgin Marbles in 2001. “At that time, I was still on the side of the English,” she says. “I thought they rescued the statues, cared for them, made them available to the world.

“But as the years have gone by, I’ve swung over to the Greeks,” Essex says.

“They’ve built a fantastic new museum opposite the Acropolis, including a beautiful and dramatic gallery in anticipation of getting the marbles back.

“The museum will open for good in September, and I think there will be a tremendous outcry,” she says. “Even public opinion in Britain is swinging over to the Greek side. It’s time to return them to the people who basically gave us our way of life, and those are the Athenians.”

Rock Banned is the latest one-man project from locally-based Jeffrey Zagers, known in Savannah’s low-fi and anti-folk scenes as one half of Jeff & Martha, and for his work with Noche Rider and Kenneth Cowan. He records original tunes onto analog tape (playing guitar, bass, sax and organ himself) and then plays that back through a series of amplifiers, while adding live drums on top of the whole mesmerizing thing.

Sinister Moustache, Port City Music, Surt {The Destroyer} Back in the infancy of Savannah’s original underground music scene, it was not at all uncommon to find completely incongruous acts sharing bills. Jam-bands played with metal groups, art-pop bands played with blues singers, and hardcore bands played with singer/songwriters. True, often the crowds for each attraction didn’t exactly fall in love with the totality of talent on stage any given night, but across the board, local crowds of yore radiated a tangible sense of eclecticism and enthusiasm for live music of most stripes.

In many respects, as more and more bands and solo artists spring up ‘round here to meet the demand for particular genres, Savannah shows that mix and match broad musical categories have become almost nonexistent. That’s one reason this oddball triple-bill of unconventional area acts looks so refreshing.

Independent promoter Tim Walls, who cut his teeth as a high schooler organizing and hyping his annual series of AURA Fests as well as a steady stream of shows by touring punk, hardcore and brutal metal acts at various venues (such as the nowdefunct Velvet Elvis and Felicia’s) before relocating to Atlanta, has returned for a few months. He’s wasted no time lining up this unexpected package at the Live Wire Music Hall — an upstart River St. venue hoping to appeal to both the southern rock and jam-band crowd as well as under served indierock and alt.country fans.

For many, the combination of headliner Sinister Moustache’s relentless, technical prog-metal and playfully snide Quisinart-rock and Port City Music’s throbbing exercises in textural, mid-’80s minor-key mopery may seem a mismatch. Throw in the debut

public gig from Surt {The Destroyer}, a brand-new instrumental stoner-rock/Chicago noise/skate-punk/ melodic metal trio (featuring two electric bassists and one trap drummer), and things seem even more confusing.

However, each of these groups share at least one common denominator: they’re all intent on writing and performing original music without giving a tinker’s cuss whether or not it’s particularly palatable for the masses, or even commercially viable. At the same time, based on these group’s past appearances (or, in the case of Surt, their members’ prior reputations), everyone involved —including Walls— cares deeply for how their shows come across.

Regardless of whether or not these groups’ songs would sound great butted up against each other on a mix CD, the spirit of camaraderie that runs through this home-grown show will hopefully encourage folks unfamiliar with any —or all— of the bands to use this as an easy and inexpensive opportunity to check out some of the least mainstream rock music being made in Savannah these days. It’s been almost 20 years since Stewart Marshall first collaborated with Winfield Smith, and in that time, the two singing guitarists’ six albums’ worth of original material have won them no small number of fans throughout the United States.

Routinely described as a duo whose feel-good (yet at times, bittersweet) roots-based “y’allternative” pop is a little too country for rock and roll and a little too rock and roll for country, the two Savannah natives relocated to Athens, Ga. in the early ‘90s, and quickly established themselves in that fabled music mecca’s clubs before lighting out for the “greener pastures” of Colorado — known far and wide for its acoustic and jam-band scene.

“We’d heard a lot of bands from there that impressed us — like Leftover Salmon and The Samples. I was actually introduced to bluegrass there, even though it came from the hills of North Carolina!”

The melting pot of influences the two were exposed to in Telluride played a role in shaping what would become their calling card: harmony-drenched, heartland rock with a strong alt.country influence.

“Plus, at the time, it was just Winfield and myself, performing as a duo, so our voices got really strong together.”

Marshall and Smith would eventually return to Athens and form a full-on electric band that also bore their name. To the two budding singer/songwriters it was yet another natural progression in what was quickly becoming an unorthodox career.

“It just felt right to add additional instrumentation to our songs,” Marshall adds. “Then, at a certain point, we felt we had to take that sound on the road.”

For serious bands who must tour to survive, Athens, with its built in cachet, was a much more logical home base than Savannah, although Marshall’s quick to note the two frontmen have never forgotten their formative years here.

“It’s an easier town to be poor in. (laughs). However, our brand-new CD is titled Sandy Britches, which takes us right back home to the kinda slow-going atmosphere of Tybee Beach which has always resonated through our music.”

This weekend, longtime fans and new converts alike have a rare opportunity to catch them in a full-band format, when Stewart & Winfield bring that local resonance back home for their first Savannah appearance in half a decade.

“This particular show wasn’t born of us saying we wanted to play the Trustees Theater. Someone approached us and said they’d like to get us into a larger room, and it’s an honor to say yes.”

In a sense, that someone was Elaine Barrow, a board member of America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia, a charitable hunger relief organization serving 21 counties in the state.

“She was instrumental in educating Stewart about Second Harvest,” explains Mary Jane Crouch, Executive Director of the organization. “He was so impressed that he spoke with his bandmembers, and they volunteered to donate their talents to help feed hungry people.”

Crouch says this is the first time the organization has ever held a concert to raise funds, and they have high hopes for the event, which is facilitated in large part by the Savannah College of Art & Design.

“SCAD is a wonderful community partner, and are always willing to help Second Harvest,” says Crouch, who adds that rising fuel costs have hit her agency hard, making it costly to even deliver the food which is often given to them.

“For example,” she says, “last week we received a donation of an entire tractor trailer load of corn — but the cost of getting it to Savannah was $1,200. We’ll be using proceeds from this show to help bring more food into the food bank.”

Crouch says Second Harvest needs to sell about 250 tickets in order to cover their basic expenses, and their goal is to sell at least 500. Although they have yet to sell enough to break even, she’s hopeful once word of this special performance

spreads, they’ll meet that goal.

Enthuses Crouch, “Where else can you listen to a live band and help your community for only $15?”

For his part, Marshall says he and his bandmates are thrilled to bring more awareness —and funding— to such an organization, but they’re not driving themselves crazy preparing for the gig.

“We’re just planning on letting it fly.

Winfield and I have played together since 1989. So, we’ll probably throw in a couple of unexpected covers off the cuff to keep things interesting. But the crowd won’t get a sterile, over-rehearsed show.”

Another thing the crowd won’t get is alcohol. Trustees Theater is a dry venue, which might seem odd for a group like Stewart & Winfield, as a majority of their fanbase were in high school or college in the ’90s, and are probably used to seeing the band in a bar with libation in hand.

Marshall’s not too worried about that, though his band isn’t accustomed to such an environment.

“That’s a new one for us! (laughs) Then again, a lot of our fans now have children and tell me their kids enjoy our CDs as well. I expect there will actually be a bunch of youngsters there, which should be very cool in its own way.”

Plus, he notes with a devilish laugh, that “although there is no direct family relation, the hotel directly across Broughton St. from Trustees Theater does have a bar.

“They don’t call it the Marshall House for nothin’! (laughs)”

Get Smart

Get Smart, the now-cult TV sitcom that aired from 1965 to 1970, was created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, and these legendary funnymen are listed in the credits of the new motion picture spinoff Get Smart as “creative consultants.” The word is that neither of them actually had any input in what turns up on the screen, which probably explains why major facets of this motion picture differ from what fans fondly recall about the show.

But in at least one respect, there’s a striking similarity: Both have no problem providing the laughs.

In the series that ran during the heyday of the Cold War, Don Adams starred as bumbling agent Maxwell Smart while Barbara Feldon played his more competent partner, Agent 99. Working for a government outfit known as C.O.N.T.R.O.L., the secret agents had their hands full protecting the world from the nefarious schemes perpetrated by the members of the rival outfit K.A.O.S. This new version does away with the Cold War backdrop, though there’s also no mention of the War on Terror or 9/11 or any other unpleasantness soiling this modern world. In fact, except for a snarky comment about liberal Hollywood stars and the sight of James Caan as a dim bulb president who can’t pronounce the word

“nuclear,” there’s very little real-world relevance, which is just fine. Instead, the well-worn plot finds K.A.O.S. head Siegfried (Terence Stamp, taking over Bernie Kopell’s role from the series) threatening to destroy the world unless he gets paid a substantial sum, and the movie seems as much a Bond spoof as a Get Smart homage.

Carell, whose Maxwell Smart is (slightly) more intelligent than Don Adams’, and Hathaway are well-paired, and there are choice supporting stints by Alan Arkin as The Chief and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the macho Agent 23. In between all the gags and all the action scenes, there’s an identifiable human element at work, and this empathy prevents this from becoming just another big, dumb summer comedy.

If I had ever entertained the notion that Mike Myers would make another movie as awful as The Cat In the Hat, I might have opted for early retirement. Yet here comes The Love Guru. Myers, who also co-wrote (with Graham Gordy) what we’ll loosely refer to as the screenplay, stars as Guru Pitka, an American-born, Indian-raised spiritual leader who’s miffed that he places second to Deepak Chopra when it comes to the popularity of self-help gurus. As children, both Pitka and Chopra were taught by -say it fast to get the “joke” -- Guru Tugginmypudha, who trains his young charges by urinating in a bucket and then making his pupils fight each other with piss-saturated mops. Tugginmypudha is played by none other than Ben Kingsley, who 25 years ago won an Oscar for playing the great Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi. Pitka is given a golden opportunity to pass Chopra in mass appeal when he’s hired by Toronto Maple Leafs owner Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba, and you know you’re in trouble when she’s one of the more tolerable aspects of a movie) to patch matters up between the hockey team’s star player, Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco), and his estranged wife Prudence (Meagan Good), who lately has been stepping out with the enormously endowed Los Angeles Kings goalie Jacques “Le Coq” Grande (Justin Timberlake). And yes, every time Le Coq pulls out le cock, we predictably hear a thud as it hits the floor.

In fact, predictability is a rampant problem with The Love Guru. When Pitka’s parents are revealed to have been dog groomers before becoming missionaries, we count the seconds until Tugginmypudha cracks about how they were into doggie style before they switched to the missionary position. That’s not to say every joke is apparent before the fact. I didn’t expect to see Pitka pull a cue stick out of his ass and smell it. Or Pitka literally shove his head up said ass while demonstrating yoga positions. For months, Hindu groups have been protesting this film’s release. I’m surprised the outfit Little People of America hasn’t joined them, given the amount of jokes aimed at Verne Troyer, the diminutive actor who plays Maple Leafs coach Cherkov. Blatantly non-P.C. humor can certainly be funny, but when it fails to deliver the laughs it merely comes across as pathetic and mean-spirited and more than a little embarrassing.

WANTED Based on the graphic novel series, Wanted initially feels like an unofficial remake of Fight Club, as cubicle nobody Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy, speaking of Atonement) narrates how he’s been beaten down by his mundane, miserable existence (cheating girlfriend, obnoxious boss, dead-end job). Into his life walks not Tyler Durden but Fox (Angelina Jolie), a

tattooed beauty who insists that he’s been targeted for elimination by the same man (Thomas Kretschmann) who recently killed his father. Fox soon introduces Wesley to The Fraternity, a clandestine outfit led by the cordial Sloan (Morgan Freeman).

Shucking aside any moral qualms, Wesley joins the group, in the process learning that he possesses untapped skills that make him a natural for this line of work. Russian director Timur Bekmambetov, best known for the visually striking yet dramatically inert Nochnoi Dozor (Night Watch) and its sequels, has crafted a slam-bang feature that revels in its own ridiculousness: To criticize the movie’s outlandish situations would be to miss the whole point of Bekmambetiv’s exercise in excess. Still, the script’s twists and turns aren’t nearly as clever as writers Michael Brandt, Derek Haas and Chris Morgan pretend and after a while, the movie’s gleeful approach to nihilism proves wearying.

The Incredible Hulk Is it just me, or is anyone else hankering to go out and rent a handful of episodes from the late 70s/early 80s TV series The Incredible Hulk? Bill Bixby was a smart choice to play the smart scientist, and in retrospect, it was downright comforting to have his rampaging alter ego played by an oversized actor spray-painted in green. In this modern age, moviemakers have opted to keep Dr. Jekyll but do away with Mr. Hyde, replacing him with a CGI creation. The results were disastrous in Ang Lee’s 2003 Hulk. This attempt to save the franchise (new director, new writer, new cast) is clearly a superior follow-up, even if the computers still can’t quite capture the misunderstood monster on film. That’s a shame, because Edward Norton does his part by providing Bruce Banner with the requisite sense of torn humanity, and the film is filled with imaginative asides for fans of the comic book and/or TV series (my favorite is the shout-out to the late Bixby, showing him on a TV screen in an episode from his popular sitcom The Courtship of Eddie’s Father).

The Happening The Happening starts off well before steadily traipsing downhill, and in that respect, it perfectly mirrors writer-director M. Night Shyamalan’s career in this vein right up until this latest release. The Sixth Sense may have been a critical and commercial smash, but each subsequent film was less satisfying than the one which preceded it.

The Happening at least represents a step up.

Opening in Central Park and then combing out through the NYC streets, the first scenes show countless people suddenly become zombie-like before proceeding to take their own lives. It’s soon revealed that this phecontinues on page 30

nomenon is spreading to all major cities throughout the northeast chamber of the country; this includes Philadelphia, where high school science teacher Elliot (Mark Wahlberg) and his wife Alma (Zooey Deschanel) elect to leave town before the plague hits. Or is it a plague? No one has a definitive answer. It’s during these early passages, when we’re as baffled as the characters, that the film is at its strongest. But the self-appointed master of the last-minute twist here elects to reveal the mystery somewhere around the picture’s halfway mark. It’s such a threadbare revelation -- not to mention a rather silly one, to boot -- that the movie ambles forward with nothing else left to say.

You Don’t Mess With the Zohan It was Mae West who famously quipped (in 1933’s I’m No Angel), “When I’m good, I’m very, very good, but when I’m bad, I’m better.” You Don’t Mess With the Zohan inspires a bastardization of that quote: When it’s funny, it’s very, very funny, but when it’s bad, it’s downright awful. That’s a shame, because choice moments suggest that this could have been Adam Sandler’s best comedy -- not a Herculean feat, by any means, but after a career littered by the likes of Big Daddy, Little Nicky and the dismal remake of The Longest Yard, we’ll take what we can get. Penning the script with Robert Smigel and omniscient “It” guy Judd Apatow, Sandler, whose newly buff frame and stylish facial hair prove to be a good look for him, plays Zohan, an Israeli antiterrorist agent who tires of his violent lot in life. While battling his arch-nemesis, the Palestinian warrior The Phantom (John Turturro), Zohan fakes his own death and moves to New York to pursue his dream of becoming a hair stylist.

McShane effectively provides guttural menace. And while the actors who provide the voices for the legendary martial arts outfit The Furious Five aren’t given enough to do (Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, David Cross, Lucy Liu and especially poor Jackie Chan are the victims), all is forgiven whenever the character of Master Shifu appears on screen. It’s a sizable part, meaning that we’re constantly treated to Dustin Hoffman’s quirky take on the role of a diminutive red panda who serves as mentor to the other animals.

Sex and the City Based on the book by Candace Bushnell, the HBO series cannily focused on four New Yorkers who ideally represented different types of women: inquisitive Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), perpetually horny Samantha (Kim Cattrall), brainy, brittle Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and reserved, constantly upbeat Charlotte (Kristin Davis). The show ended with the characters either married or in settled relationships, and the movie picks up several years after that point. That has changed the dynamic of the product, since the fun of watching these four single gals whoop it up in the Big Apple has by necessity been curtailed to focus on their triumphs and travails as attached women. Thus, Carrie is preoccupied with her upcoming marriage to longtime beau Mr. Big (Chris Roth); Samantha valiantly resists the call of the penis as she struggles to remain faithful to her hunky if unavailable boyfriend Jerry (Jason Lewis); Miranda contends with issues of infidelity as they relate to her husband Steve (David Eigenberg); and Charlotte is content with life with hubbie Harry (Evan Handler) and their adopted daughter.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

It isn’t obnoxious. It isn’t without heart or soul. It isn’t packed to the rafters with potty humor. And it isn’t made solely for the ADD-afflicted. In short, it isn’t like the majority of today’s non-Pixar animated features. It’s important not to oversell the picture, because at the end of the day, it’s still a formulaic family film featuring the usual type of underachiever who invariably headlines toon romps of this nature. But in other ways, it’s a delight, wrapping its familiar messages of acceptance and self-confidence in the middle of a provocative visual scheme that’s always pleasant to study and absorb. Jack Black employs his patented shtick as an overweight panda who longs to become a martial arts expert, but it suits this story just fine. As the vicious snow leopard who seeks to claim the high-and-mighty title of Dragon Warrior, Deadwood’s Ian

It’s now 1957, and World War II has since been replaced by the Cold War, meaning our intrepid archeologist-professor-swashbuckler now has his hands full battling Commies instead of Nazis.

The Russians, led by a slinky ball of blackhaired menace named Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett), need Indy’s cooperation in helping them obtain an object -- a crystal skull, of course -- that will aid them in their quest for world domination. Indie’s journey to thwart them reunites him with Marion Ravenwood (three cheers for the return of Raiders’ Karen Allen) and also allows him to share adventures with a brash young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) and a loony old professor (John Hurt).

Longtime fans will find the references to past films delightful and they’ll similarly be pleased to find Spielberg once again at his most limber.
