In environmental circles, there’s a certain unspoken reluctance to talk too openly about how important our coast is as a sea turtle nesting area.

While everyone is justly proud of the role of Georgia’s barrier islands as spawning grounds for these wonderful creatures, there’s a sense that spreading the good news too far and wide might spell trouble for the reptiles, considering how extraordinarily fragile their nesting process is — and how extraordinarily destructive humans can often (usually?) be.

We discussed the sensitivity of the topic when planning this week’s issue featuring Bill DeYoung’s special report on the secret life

of the loggerhead. While sharing a desire to keep the lives of these magnificent creatures as stress-free as possible, in the end we decided that the situation was better served by more education and information, not less.

Spill baby spill? It’s time to take on big oil by andrew willner

The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill that killed 11 and threatens to annihilate the coastal economy of the southeastern U.S. is a good reason to question authority.

It has caused me to abandon my faith in our government’s ability to regulate big oil and lead us to an alternative energy future. I’ve been disheartened by the web of legislative loopholes and industry deregulation which has opened the door to potentially criminal negligence by the oil industry.

As oil continues to hemorrhage into the Gulf, it is now up to individuals, grassroots organizations and communities to demand that the U.S. government criminally prosecute those responsible for this disaster and amend the policies that have resulted in unregulated, out of control coastal drilling.

It’s also time to make this a major pocketbook issue, a moment when all of us should divest ourselves of oil stocks.

Let’s be clear, BP and other companies drilling in the Gulf (and determined to drill on all of our

coasts), are not drilling because it will add a few months of fuel to our current supply, but for the bloated profits those companies will earn – a significant amount of which end up in the election coffers of both parties.

Yes, it’s been a great time for the oil companies. BP alone made almost $6 billion in profits in the first quarter of this year. And to protect those profits, BP spent $16 million in 2009 to influence Capitol Hill lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, says Newsweek.

But now the Gulf disaster has ripped the filthy bandage off the festering wound of our oil-based economy, exposing it for what it truly is – bullying by a corrupt industry.

This spill was easily preventable had government done its job, and had BP been a responsible company and put reasonable safeguards in place, such as a $500,000 emergency remote-control shutoff switch that two other oil producing nations, Norway and Brazil, require, says The Wall Street Journal.

Instead, BP cut corners to save a buck, and is now doing senseless violence to the environment, our economy, and life on the battered Gulf coast.

It is now up to ordinary people to do what government has failed to do – to stand up to the bullies at BP and other fossil fuel companies and demand they be deprived of their privileged place at the bargaining table, and be stripped of the billions in subsidies and tax relief that keeps the playing field tilted precipitously against alternative energy.

Instead of subsidizing oil production, we should tax every barrel to recoup the costs of stationing U.S. troops on foreign soil to protect private oil derricks, pipelines and tankers.

It is also time for people to work locally to transition our towns, cities, counties and states away from an oil-based economy to a “restorative economy,” an economy dedicated to core values of human and environmental health and safety, cultural and biological diversity, and care for commonly held natural resources.

A restorative economy embraces alternative locally based energy, is less extractive and less violent.

One need only look at the utter lack of danger presented by a wind farm or solar array, compared to the horrific events in the Gulf, to see the difference.

As importantly, we must place blame for this disaster squarely on

the shoulders of big oil. It is not enough to parade the BP board of directors through a congressional hearing.

As an environmental activist who has gathered the corpses of oiled birds, and seen firsthand ecosystems wrecked by oil company negligence, I wonder if it’s high time we paraded those executives in a “perp walk” before the blinding lights of TV news cameras.

We must put our elected and appointed officials on notice that this is the beginning of the end for fossil fuels. It is time we rejected the morally bankrupt arguments of an industry that is destroying not only our environmental and economic future, but the democratic process.

Vote with your wallet and purse. Sell mutual funds that include fossil fuel securities.

Tell charitable foundations, your churches, and higher education institutions to divest portfolios of oil stocks. Invest in alternative energy companies instead.

The secret life of turtles It’s loggerhead nesting season on Georgia’s beaches

Gravity is an entirely new concept for her. She weighs as much as 400 pounds, and she’s spent her adult life in the open ocean. Until now, there’s never been a reason to come ashore.

It’s nesting season.

To watch a sea turtle on the beach, in the dead of night, is like pulling back the veil on some secret ritual. You’re acutely aware that it’s something you’re not really supposed to see. The great reptile, so agile in the water, is hulking and heavy on land, and when she sees you, the only reason she doesn’t flee immediately back to the shadow and safety of the ocean is because she can’t do anything quickly now.

This reproductive rite takes place over and over again on Georgia beaches, nightly, from May to August. Sea turtles have been making these nocturnal landings since long before humans claimed everything for their own.

Before waterfront property, lighthouses, shrimpboats and seawalls. Before the barrier islands had even gelled off the coastline.

The most commonly–found species

of sea turtle in the southeastern United States is the loggerhead — so named because it has an enormous head, particularly in comparison to the green turtle, which also nests every summer from Texas to the Carolinas.

Several times during the nesting months, mating takes place five miles or so off the coast. Studies indicate that the females actually lay their eggs on the very stretch of sand where they themselves were hatched, as much as 50 or more years before.

Somehow she knows to crawl past the high–tide line, usually at the base of a sand dune (provided there is one).

She creates a “body pit” by flailing those front flippers back and forth, as if she were making a turtle–shaped snow angel.

Slowly, methodically, she uses her flat rear flippers to excavate an hourglass– shapes hole in the sand.

(Again, this is all through instinct.

The turtle’s body is not even remotely flexible; she digs the nest without ever seeing it, or her eggs.).

Over the course of half an hour or so, about 100 leathery white eggs, the size of ping–pong balls, will be deposited into the hole (they’re quite wet, and goopy, and are in no danger of breaking at this stage).

Once she discerns there are no more eggs inside of her, the turtle — again, blindly using those rear flippers — scoops sand back into the hole.

Then the big swin–fins in the front go into action. She flings sand back and forth over the area, disguising the nest, and caps the effort with a few heave–ho

body twists to further camouflage the area.

Laboriously, she turns around and begins the long crawl — a bit faster this time — back to the ocean. It’s about an hour after she first made landfall.

The only evidence that the turtle was here are the telltale tractor–trailer tracks left as she dragged herself from, and back to, the water.

Somewhere between 50 and 60 days later, the 3–inch baby turtles emerge from the nest, wiggle their way down to the sea, and begin their own perilous journey. Perhaps one in 100 will survive the harsh realities of life at sea to reach adulthood.

Tybee’s turtles Of all Georgia’s barrier islands, Tybee records the fewest number of loggerhead nests. There were only three in 2009; the record was 2007, with 11 nests.

(Compare this to the beaches of Brevard County, Florida, where several dozen turtles come ashore every single night, all summer long.)

“With Tybee, part of the issue is due to development and changes to the beaches, and the number of people on the beaches,” says Norton. “I’m sure that way back when, the numbers were much higher.”

Beach “renourishment” (dredging) and the density of humans and their well–lit dwellings has apparently made Tybee undesirable for the reptiles.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, sea turtle data has only been collected on the five miles of Tybee beachfront for 20 years.

Mark Dodd, the DNR wildlife biologist who coordinates Georgia’s sea turtle research and rescue programs, applauds Tybee’s recent efforts to raise public awareness of the presence of turtles on the beach.

“One of the reasons we focus on these animals,” Dodd says, “is that they’re an excellent indicator species, of the health of our ocean and beach ecosystems.

So all the things we do to help recover loggerheads, they don’t just recover log-

gerheads, they help beach–nesting birds and a lot of marine organisms that rely on the same ecosystems.

“As an indicator species, loggerheads are telling us that as humans, we’re having a very profound impact on our ocean ecosystem,” he says.

“All their efforts on Tybee to control lights, to maintain the nesting habitat, everything they do to make that beach suitable for turtles, ultimately makes it better for humans. I think it’s a noble and worthwhile goal.”

Keep your distance So what should you do if you encounter a sea turtle on the beach?

Leave it alone.

The loggerhead is listened as a Threatened Species, under the national Endangered Species Act of 1973, and if you’re “molesting” a turtle (meaning you’ve harmed, interfered with or touched it in any way) you’re committing a crime.

Nevertheless, it is possible to observe the turtle’s ancient ritual, if you’re careful.

Don’t use flashlights. Sea turtles are extremely sensitive to bright light; the most populous nesting beaches are those that keep the lights from human dwellings to a bare minimum. As she rests at surf ’s edge, deciding if it’s safe to come ashore, the female is at her most wary. Any bright light, flicking on suddenly, will spook her, and she’ll turn around and swim away. A cigarette lighter will do it.

If she’s already making the long haul up the sand, any light, sound or obvious movement will seem like a threat, and she might still turn tail, even after 50 yards of laborious crawling. This is called a “false crawl,” and you (the observer) will feel pretty bad if you’ve caused it.

Stay away from the nest. If you come upon the telltale tracks, follow them (with your eyes) toward the dunes, and you might catch sight of the turtle in her “body pit,” laying her eggs. She’ll be there for a while. Some scientists say she

goes into a sort of trance while the eggs are dropping, and that it’s safe to approach and watch from a few feet away.

It’s better to keep at a good distance, though; she might still abandon the whole thing if she senses your presence.

After she’s finished laying, you’ll see the sand flailing as she attempts to camouflage the nest site. Once she’s turned herself around and begins crawling back towards the water, that’s when it’s safe to approach her and get a close–up look.

Just make sure she’s well away from the nest and heading oceanward before you do.

The hatchlings. You’ll never see them. They leave the nest and hit the beach so quickly, it’s a rarely observed natural phenomenon. If you do happen upon them, again, don’t interfere in any way. No ifs, ands or cigarette butts

Could changing rules for smokers increase drunk driving?

Among the topics of discussion during the Healthy Savannah Initiative’s first community health forum, hosted at the Civic Center two weeks ago, was the desire to strengthen the restrictions on smoking put in place by the Georgia Smoke Free Air Act of 2005, which banned smoking in most restaurants and workplaces across the state.

The state law left open several loop holes, including exceptions for bars, as well as some restaurants with designated smoking areas.

“We’d like to close that loophole because of the dangers of second hand smoke, particularly to the employees,” says Cristina Gibson, the Director of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention with the Coastal Health District (CHD). “There is no risk free level of exposure to second hand smoke.”

In the battle against lung cancer, heart disease and emphysema, among others, the Healthy Savannah Initiative (HSI), with help from the CHD and the foundation Americans for Non–Smokers’ Rights, would like to join the hundreds of communities across the country that have nixed smoking from bars and restaurants.

“Our goal is to get to city council this

month with a model ordinance,” says Paula Kreissler, owner of the Wound Care Clinic and incoming chairperson of the HSI. “That’s the whole push here.

Second hand smoke is what’s driving all this.”

Supporters of stronger restrictions argue that health risks associated with second hand smoke impinge upon the rights of nonsmokers, particularly those exposed because of their jobs.

“It’s not a choice that they have; it’s a condition of employment,” says Kreissler.

Although the health advantages of eliminating smoking from more establishments across the city is clear, the full impact of a smoking ban in Savannah is complex and touches upon issues of economics, public safety and quality of life.

of anti–tobacco groups versus the corporations of Big Tobacco.

“When you’ve got people who are very passionate and involved in an issue they’re very suspicious of work, whether it has positive or negative impacts to it,” says Chad Cotti, a professor from the University of Wisconsin at Osh Kosh.

“They assume you’re making a political statement rather than a scientific one.”

In 2007, Cotti and his colleague Scott Adams, both members of the Economics Department, undertook two significant studies into the effects of smoking bans on communities across the country. Their findings were surprising: Banning cigarettes can affect bars economically and increase the incidence of drunk driving.

Money, money, money One of the longest running debates surrounding the effects of smoking bans are economic in nature. It’s no secret that bar patrons are often also smokers, and much attention has been given to the question of whether, once drinkers aren’t allowed to smoke, whether they would begin to patronize establish-

ments where they could still smoke and drink.

“There has been discussion that businesses will lose revenue,” says Gibson. “There have been several studies that have said that the smoke free policies actually don’t have an adverse impact on the hospitality industry.”

The numbers, however, may be deceptive, because they are taken in total across several different businesses.

While restaurants may see an increase in business, welcoming non–smokers who previously had shied away from smoky eating establishments, bars might be affected differently.

According to Michael J. MacFadden, author of Dissecting Anti–Smokers, the impact for bars in Minnesota’s Twin Cities was actually an 11 percent decrease in bar employment over the three years following passage of the ban.

“Changes in employment are a good gauge of the economic impact on bars and restaurants as staffing decisions reflect patronage,” says the first report continues on p. 32

Crime waits for no one

Police were called because someone was knocking on a woman’s door and when she asked him to leave he refused.

An officer arrived and spoke to the man, who said he wasn’t the man the police were looking for.

He told them that the suspect had left already.

Police then spoke with the woman who called the police and who informed them that the man they spoke with was indeed the suspect. She told them that the man did not live at her residence, but that his wife was staying there because he had beaten her up. The suspect was very intoxicated and continued to try and lie. He told police that he had walked to the residence. The woman told police that he had driven the red SUV parked in front of her house. The wasted guy said that he didn’t know who

the car belonged to, and was then arrested for public intoxication. A key to the SUV was found in his pocket. The vehicle was towed and the man was taken to jail.

• An officer spotted a vehicle going 52 mph in a 35 mph zone on Johnny Mercer Boulevard. He pulled over the car and asked the driver for license and registration. The driver complied. The officer noticed unopened beer in the back of the car as well as a slight odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The officer asked the driver if he had been drinking. He said no, but that he had been at the beach earlier and someone had spilled some beer in his car. The officer asked him to step out of the vehicle and noted that he was unsteady on his feet. The driver consented to performing field sobriety tests. He failed the horizontal gaze nystagmus, but did ok with the stand on one leg test. However, the driver, who was only 19, tested positive for alcohol (.045) during a preliminary breath test and was taken to the precinct. The officer read the driver the Implied Consent for Drivers Under 21. The driver didn’t know how to respond. He was released to his father.

• A woman called police because she and her estranged husband had gotten into an altercation.

She told officers that her husband had been waiting on her in the parking lot outside of a club, and when she exited the building he began to yell at her. The situation escalated when he punched her in the head.

The woman’s husband was not on the scene. The woman had swelling around her nose and on the side of her head. She was transported to the hospital by EMS. • A woman stopped at a precinct to report that she had been receiving harassing phone calls from a former boyfriend. She stated that he had called and told her to tell another woman to return his personal property, and that if she does not he will have the complainant charged with receiving stolen property. The suspect then called again two days later, and that he had called ten times that day repeating the same message. The woman said that she and her fianc are both on probation and that she

is afraid any accusations made might get them in trouble. She said her ex was recently released from prison. She was advised of warrant procedures.

• Police stopped a vehicle because a brake light was out, and it didn’t have a license plate. The driver said he had just bought the car, and that was why it didn’t have a license plate.

The man told the officer he had just gotten out of prison for burglary and didn’t have a driver’s license. He said he needed to get home because he’d left his six–year old step son there alone. The child’s mother was contacted. The driver consented to be searched. He was arrested for driving without a license. After arriving at CCDC, officers discovered a bag of marijuana as the arrestee was booked. • Our Expanding “Rights”: (1) In April, a high official of the European Union called for member-nations to subsidize “vacations” for seniors, the disabled and those too poor to afford one. Said Commissioner (for enterprise and industry) Antonio Tajani, “Traveling for tourism today is a right.”

(2) In April, the town of Olathe, Kan., became the second city in two years to settle lawsuits filed by citizens who were arrested for flashing their middle fingers at police officers, thus appearing to acknowledge that flipping the bird contemptuously at a cop is expressive conduct protected by the First Amendment. (Philadelphia paid out $50,000; Olathe, one-sixteenth the size, paid out $5,000.)

Can’t Possibly Be True

• The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., famously pickets targets around the country with explicit antihomosexuality signs and recently chose as venues the funerals of deceased U.S. soldiers and Marines (calling such deaths God’s punishment for America’s acceptance of gays and lesbians). One grieving Marine family in York, Pa., filed a lawsuit accusing Westboro of “intentional infliction of emotional distress” by picketing their son’s 2006 funeral, but a U.S. Court of Appeals ruled in March that such protests are protected by the First Amendment.

Piling on, the Court added that the grieving family must also pay Westboro $16,510 to cover its costs in having to defend the lawsuit.

• Michelle Taylor, 34, was sentenced in Elko, Nev., in April to life in prison, solely for the crime of forcing a 13year-old boy to touch her breasts, twice.

The sentence was mandatory under a certain state law, but, said her lawyer, “She is getting a greater penalty ... than if she killed (the boy).” (She could be eligible for parole after 10 years.)

Inexplicable

• Baltimore County (Md.) Judge Darrell Russell Jr., presiding over a March domestic violence case in which the woman obviously had changed her mind about blaming the boyfriend, performed the couple’s marriage ceremony in his chambers after temporarily halting the boyfriend’s trial. Earlier, Judge Russell had informed the woman that she could not refuse to testify

based on “marital privilege” because she and the boyfriend were not married.

Consequently, as the trial started, she asked the judge to marry them. After the ceremony, she was then granted the “marital privilege,” and the judge dismissed the charge for lack of evidence.

(Russell has now been reassigned to less important cases.)

• When Joseph Velardo, 28, was arrested in Port St. Lucie, Fla., in April after shoplifting items from a Staples store, he for some reason expressed relief that the charges would prevent him from being accepted by law schools.

He explained that, since the value of the goods was over the $300 line that separates a mere misdemeanor from a 3rd-degree felony, law schools, thankfully, could no longer accept him. While officers were busy being puzzled about all that, the Staples manager told the police that the actual value of Velardo’s take was $276.88.

• Justin Massler, 27, charged with criminal stalking of 28-year-old businesswoman-heiress Ivanka Trump, was released on bail in New York City in April but explained to a New York Daily News reporter that he intended to alter his approach. Instead of imposing himself on Trump, he said he would “become like a big-time millionaire, real estate mogul, so that she’s the one who contacts me.”

• At press time, the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal is considering declaring veteran comedian Guy Earle guilty of discrimination against two uncloseted lesbians who were heckling him in a night club. According to Earle, the women were loud, rude to the waitress and contemptuous of Earle, and thus opened the door to combattype comedy of insult-exchange, except that some of his insults referred to the women’s sexual orientation and frisky behavior at the table. Earle said his job requires him to be “offensive” and that the traditional verbal Best of jousts between comedians and Savannah hecklers are not the same as ilResults legal “hate speech.”

Police were tipped the day before when Lo appeared at the federal courthouse in Plano, Texas, and sought a formal judicial ruling that would protect him from harm, even if he were to use deadly force “to defend the innocent life of another human being.”

• (1) In April, outdoing the recent partisan spats in the U.S. Congress, several dozen members of the Ukrainian parliament squared off over a cooperation-with-Russia bill that eventually involved headlocks, punching, a smoke bomb, glue (in the voting machines) and cartons of eggs tossed at the speaker’s platform. Russian president Dmitry Medvedev called it the chamber’s “traditional elegance.” (2) Sweden’s Metro newspaper reported in March that a 21-year-old inmate at Kirseberg prison in Malmo faces discipline for continuing his protests against jail conditions by aiming his gas-passing directly at guards.

• Federal agents in April uncovered an elaborate bestiality ring (involving horses) in Washington state. Facility operator Douglas Spink is suspected of using the site to make pornographic videos for perverts, and a visitor from England was arrested as a suspected paying customer. This farm is near Bellingham, Wash., and the operation is completely separate from the 2005 raid on a similar facility near Enumclaw, Wash. (about 110 miles away), in which one man died of a perforated colon following penetrative sex by a horse. I recently read in your online archive about the origin of “hoist with his own petard,” in which you say that a petard was a small explosive whose name came from the French word for fart. That made me think: what kind of PSI are we talking about to lift oneself off the ground with flatulence? Assuming you had the precision of Le Petomane and could make a seal in a seated position, what would it take to get, say, a 180-pound man airborne? Could an equation be formulated to determine the amount of baked beans needed to reach liftoff?

—Kfraser34 You realize, K., that this question is idiotic. However, that’s never stopped us before. So I assigned the job to my assistant Una, a professional engineer, who quickly obtained the relevant thrust equations from NASA and got to work computing the necessary forces. While Una and I found the results enlightening, for you—assuming you’re the 180-pound man here—it wasn’t such a good day. Rocket science works impressively when embodied in the space shuttle, but I’m here to tell you that on a personal scale it makes a real mess.

The digestive system isn’t optimally configured for propulsion. Our first problem is the shape of your sphincter.

All you’ve got to work with is a pretty slender ring of muscle; no matter how good your control, it’s not going to be able to direct and contain the flow of gas like a rocket nozzle.

The more immediate challenge is handling the necessary pressure buildup. Una devised an ingenious spreadsheet that factored in sphincter diameter, molar mass of gas, and other matters that nobody but your doctor needs to know about. We learned that getting you aloft—and I don’t mean putting you in orbit, I mean just budging you off the launch pad—would require

800 newtons. Your basic fart generates 0.2 newtons. Hoisting’s going to take a lot more petard than that.

It was time, you should pardon the expression, to turn up the gas. Assuming a robust 23 cubic inches of flatus per emission, we computed the necessary exit pressure at 3,680 pounds per square inch. Problem is, your gut will rupture somewhere north of four pounds per square inch. Alternatively, if we took four PSI as our limit and instead ramped up the propellant volume, we discovered we needed about 17,600 cubic feet of gas. The observed volume of the human intestine is on the order of 300 cubic inches.

“I don’t think he’s got it in him,” Una concluded sadly.

She wasn’t about to give up, though.

She resumed tapping away at her keyboard. I looked over her shoulder and saw a document entitled “Combustion of Fart Table.”

“Una,” I gasped. “You’re not suggesting . . . ?”

“It’s our only hope,” she replied.

I’ll spare you the details—you probably remember the basics from college anyway. Una ran various scenarios. At one point we had the internal pressure up to 250 atmospheres, the combustion temperature at 3,600 degrees Kelvin, and exhaust gas exit velocity at 12,000 feet per second. It wasn’t pretty, K. In the meantime, you asked about beans. The most potent kind we know about are mature lima beans, which produce about 34 cubic inches of gas per pound ingested. So if your lower GI tract were somehow able to accommodate the volume, at 4 PSI you’d need 453 tons of lima beans to generate the requisite 17,600 cubic feet of flatus.

Here’s plan B. Since flatus is lighter than air, you could save up enough to inflate a hot-air-type balloon. Assuming 180 pounds for you plus 20 pounds of apparatus, to get off the ground you’ll need to fill a balloon 30 feet in diameter—a slow but sustainable approach to transportation. Resources don’t get much more renewable, and you’ll be sequestering greenhouse gases, too. cs By cecil adams Comments, questions? Papadosio

Following a hot, successful January gig at the Wormhole, this Ohio– based “livetronica” jam band returns this week to boil ‘n’ brew at the Live Wire.

“Sound–wise,” says synth and piano player and lead singer Billy Brouse, “we’re a mix between electronica, rock ‘n’ roll and improvisation. We’re all influenced by Radiohead and Sound Tribe Sector 9, bands that mix electronics with organic instruments like guitar, bass and drums. There aren’t too many of those bands, but it’s starting to get more popular.”

Seamlessly welding funk, jazz, dub and spacey electronica, Papadosio’s Brouse, Tony Thogmartin (guitar, samples, synthesizer, vocals), Michael Healy (drums) and Rob McConnell (bass, vocals) met on the University of Ohio campus in Athens (the OTHER Athens).

On its website, the positive–energy band raved about the January tour that last brought them to hard and fast. Y’know. And that’s not all: Dick and the guys are actually opening this show for the punk/metal aggregate the Spo–Its, from Bluffton, once featured on

A conversation with jam-band mainstay Kofi Burbridge

On a 100–acre farm in Norristown, just about an hour’s drive from Savannah, the tribes will gather this weekend.

It’s the 2010 Hoopee Jam, a three–day music festival, featuring a pretty cool lineup of some of the best jam–band performers in the Southeast.

Among the veterans are Jimmy Hall and Donna Hall (Wet Willie), Randall Bramblett (Sea Level) and Tommy Talton (Cowboy, the Gregg Allman Band); the relative “new kids” include Caroline Aiken, Savannah’s Bobby Lee Rodgers, Phantom Wingo and the phenomenal Florida–based gospel/R&B band the Lee Boys (you gotta hear “sacred steel” music to believe it).

It’s an all–day, all–night hippie

camp–a–thon, and things get rolling with a big ol’ acoustic jam on the 13th.

Next day brings the start of the scheduled performances.

The biggest name on the bill isn’t bringing a band at all – he’s Kofi Burbridge, who plays (mean) keyboards and jam–band flute. Burbridge, a full–time member of the Derek Trucks Band (and Trucks’ current project, a joint musical venture with wife Susan Tedeschi), is the Hoopee Jam’s Artist– at–Large. His job is to sit in with anyone he chooses – or pretty much anyone who asks. It’s the kind of thing this multi–talented musician is particularly good at.

Burbridge and his younger brother,

Oteil, have been shining stars on Georgia’s jam scene since moving down from their native New York in the early 1990s (Oteil is the fulltime bass player for the Allman Brothers Band).

According to Kofi, the idea is to show up with his flute ready, and his mind open, and to simply “see what happens.”

What exactly does it mean to be an artist–at–large?

Kofi Burbridge: As I’ve seen it quite a few times before, there will always be some artists that are seemingly roaming around from stage to stage. A lot of the guys know each other from working together, passing ships in the sea, so to speak. I think the promoters and the

Kofi Burbridge: Absolutely! That’s actually been a dream of ours, including Oteil, and we actually sat in with them at the Wannee Festival, to bring us up to date, and that was a blast. We love that kind of stuff. We love all kinds of music, we really do.

Was moving to the South – and Georgia – a musical eye–opener for you?

Kofi Burbridge: I could have easily focused in way more on the flute, because that was my first instrument, and I had decided to become a bandleader and stuff like that. I had a band years ago, through school, out of school, and then I just wanted more. I wanted to play chords – the flute was a mono instrument. I wanted to learn more behind the scenes. I wanted more of the experience than just the performance aspect.

And so it threw me into all these other circles, and I think eventually that’s what happened. I ended up playing keyboards with these different situations. It threw me into Atlanta, it threw me into bands, it threw me into other than orchestral things.

Tommy Talton’s playing the Hoopee Jam. He’s been around for years. Is that someone you’d feel comfortable just jumping onstage with?

Kofi Burbridge: Possibly. You know, it’s not mandatory. If he feels like it,

yeah, if he doesn’t, cool. It’s not like I’m supposed to sit in with every band. But they’ve opened it up for more than just the regular shows to go on. They’ve opened it up for other possibilities.

There are some groups that’ll say “Hey, we have a set show, and we want to do this a certain way.” Which is good!

I’ll probably want to check it out and see what’s happening.

That’s the kind of vibe you’re looking for. You’re looking for all different kinds of things going on.

The Derek Trucks/Susan Tedeschi Band tour continues. How’s that going?

Kofi Burbridge: It’s a bunch of fun. One main reason is that my brother is playing in the band now, and we’re really happy about that part. And it’s progressing into further areas that Derek and Susan have been trying to get to. The annual Sculpture in Savannah show celebrates fine art in three dimensions

Sculpture is one of the oldest forms of art in human history, but it isn’t as widely appreciated as it once was, according to one local artist.

“Sculpture is probably one of the oldest forms of art there is,” says sculptor Susie Chisholm. “Sculpture was a huge ancient art, and somehow over the years we’ve progressed into paintings.”

Chisholm, who is well–known for her life–sized bronze sculptures – including the Johnny Mercer statue in Ellis Square – wants the art form to get the respect it deserves here in Savannah, which is one of the reasons why she started the annual Sculpture in Savannah show.

The third annual event will take place Monday, May 17 at the Green–Meldrim House. A portion of the proceeds from the show are donated to the building’s restoration campaign.

The inspiration for Sculpture in Savannah started innocently enough with a question from her husband, who asked why there were no sculpture shows in Savannah.

“He said that and then left me to it. That was the last he had to do with it,” says Chisholm, smiling. “That’s when I sent out an email to a bunch of friends who were going to be in the show.”

For years, Chisholm and several other sculptor friends had been participating in an annual show in Summerville, South Carolina, which takes place the weekend prior to the show here in Savannah. Since several artists were already in the area for that show, it was just a matter of convincing them to stay an extra day or two for another show here. continues on p. 21

There are sculptors from across the country, each of whom brings work in their own style – some are more traditionally figurative, others’ works are abstract, design–based pieces, and some specialize in various species of animals.

“The point is to have a little something different for everybody,” says Chisholm.

The diversity and quality of work has proven effective when it comes to drawing a crowd, and the relatively young event has already developed a devout following consisting of everyone from art collectors to curious laymen who are drawn into the event by the live music, the unique fine art and the stately ambience of the Green–Meldrim House.

While Chisholm is proud of the show’s success, she isn’t harboring any plans to start doing the event more than once a year.

At the time, Chisholm had no idea how the event would turn out, but knew that if the work on display was good, that people who stopped by would appreciate it.

“People are overwhelmed at the quality. That’s what I’ve said for years. If you bring quality in, people will realize it,” she explains.

Several years later, that level of quality has become a hallmark of the event.

“If you have good art, they’re gonna come,” says Chisholm. “People want to see something of quality. They’re tired of craft shows.”

Now that the annual show has established itself, there are artists who fly in specifically for that night.

“These are people from all over the country that are doing big things – huge national commissions,” Chisholm says.

“These are some of the top artists in the country right now in sculpture.”

Over the past few years, the artists who participate have become a tight knit group, and of the 12 artists who displayed work the first year of the event, 11 are returning for their third appearance.

Southern–fried whimsy and eccentric characters are the stock–in–trade of Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Beth Henley, whose Impossible Marriage is onstage at the Lucas Theatre this weekend.

The SCAD production is directed by Sharon Ott, who won an Obie Award before arriving in Savannah to teach the theatrical arts in Savannah in 2007.

Ott was Artistic Director at California’s Berkeley Rep for 13 years, and during her tenure there, the company was awarded the Regional Theatre Tony Award for Excellence.

She and Henley became fast friends during a production of another of the Mississippi–born playwright’s works.

“I’m in the lucky position of starting my career by directing Beth Henley when she was in the room,” Ott says. “I fell in love with her a lot because she’s such a lively and interesting, quirky person. She’s sort of similar to a lot of her characters. Her sense of humor is quite similar to Floral, the lead character in

Impossible Marriage.”

Henley won the P–prize for Crimes of the Heart, the story of three Southern sisters dealing – in their own disparate ways – with joy and heartbreak. Her plays are also very, very funny.

“I think directors love her because she’s one of those people who doesn’t write a bad character,” explains Ott. “All of her plays have a very ensemble feel – everyone who’s out there onstage is wonderful and interesting. Which is a rare gift. A lot of playwrights write great lead characters, and there are always a couple of supporting characters who are just sort of there.”

Impossible Marriage – which happens to be set in Savannah – is about family matriarch Kandall Kingsley, whose daughter Pandora is about to wed a an older artist – “with vaguely Eastern European lineage” – named Edward Lunt.

Pandora’s pregnant older sister, Floral, is determined to undermine the marriage.

“Beth really hears the whole world in her plays,” Ott observes, “so she gets these very interesting types of people, most of whom are in some sort of crisis.

At least three–quarters of the people on the stage have something major going on.

”And then she ramps up the situation to this great place where there’s always a kind of wild, comic, slightly grotesquely funny climax.”

Ott believes that Beth Henley is in a unique position to make her Southern stories and offbeat characters true to life.

“She grew up in a quirky, interesting family, and lots of people around her were that way,” says the director. “And I think she wrote about what she knew.”

Getting the Savannah dialect just right was one of Ott’s primary tasks for her Impossible Marriage cast.

“We’ve used some locals as our dialect ‘first responders,’” she laughs.

“Just talking to those folks, there’s a kind of wonderful quirkiness that is more found in Southern culture, one could generalize and say, than in Yankee culture or West Coast culture. When Beth Henley was a little girl, in genteel Jackson, Miss., her mother would often drive past Eudora Welty’s house. “I would look up at the window and see her typing,� Henley recalls. “My mom said ‘She’s a writer, and she’s internationally known.’ To actually see a woman writer, at that time, was something kind of amazing.�

In 1981, Henley received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, for her play Crimes of the Heart, making her Jackson’s second (famous) woman writer.

Henley, whose other works include The Miss Firecracker Contest, The Lucky Spot, The Debutante Ball and Am I Blue, shares Welty’s affinity for quirky Southern characters, their unique predilections and most especially their honeyed back–and–forth dialogue.

It’s probably no surprise that her favorite playwright is Tennessee Williams.

The 58 year–old playwright lives in Los Angeles; lately she’s been traveling back and forth to New York City, where her play Family Time has just opened off–Broadway.

The Family Time director is Academy Award–winning Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Something Wild). An odd choice, perhaps – Demme’s never before directed live theater – but then, Beth Henley has always sought out and celebrated the odd.

Why is Impossible Marriage set in Savannah?

Beth Henley: These people are kind of wonderfully entitled people. I wanted them to live in a place that was beautiful and cultured, but kind of had roots grown into the characters. So your family’s name was important. What you did, morally, was more important than it would be in, say, Los Angeles.

I wanted somewhere where it was important to be a moral, upstanding person and make your family name look good. And there was such a thing as scandal and betrayal. And it had high consequences.

It sounds like you could throw a dart and hit any number of southern cities that fit that bill. So why Savannah?

I’d like to ask about your friendship with Sharon Ott. Beth Henley: She did a beautiful production of a play of mine called Ridiculous Fraud in California. It takes place in New Orleans, and she was just obsessive about learning about the South. I think she’s a genuinely curious and kind of perceptive person.

Whatever she’s doing the play about, she wants to know the heart of it, and the language, and the roots.

So I was thrilled that she was going to do this play, especially in Savannah.

It’s never been done in Savannah, as far as I know.

Where does Impossible Marriage fall on your list of your favorite works?

Winner of the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson opens Friday, May 14 and runs through the 23rd at S.P.A.C.E., home to the City of Savannah’s Cultural Arts Theatre.

Set in Pittsburgh, The Piano Lesson is a story about family ties, painful memories and the tenuous promise of a brighter future. Boy Willie has brought up a truckload of watermelons from Mississippi. He and his sister Berniece are trying to decide the fate of the family’s heirloom piano – she wants to keep it (the instrument features the carved likenesses of their great–grandfather’s wife and son) and he insists it must be sold, so that he can purchase the farm their ancestors worked on as slaves.

Berniece sees the piano as a treasure, a priceless tie to those who have gone before; for Willie Boy, it’s the key to his own freedom from economic enslavement, and his right as the descendant of those who suffered.

Certain facts about the keyboard’s history are too bitter for either sibling.

“When I read The Piano Lesson,” said actor Charles S. Dutton, who played Willie Boy in the original production, “I realized it encompassed the entire African–American experience. August Wilson’s legacy is as important as Martin Luther King’s legacy, as important as Malcom X’s legacy, and as important as Nat Turner.”

Beth Henley: It’s really been, I don’t know, a dream come true to work with him. He’s so brilliant, and it’s extraordinary how he synthesizes things and thinks on his feet. His mind can just contain so much. It’s really thrilling.

Beth Henley: I don’t know that it’s an asset ... certainly, there are things that are done different, but I think the basic things – just telling the story, having a pace, having kind of the tone and the heart, and the characters, is very similar to film.

Is it a challenge or an asset to have a visually–minded film

Beth Henley: You just do the best you can. Because that play went so well, I had the luxury of being able to be a writer for my life. Even though I’ve had plays that have not done as well, by far, at least I’ve been able to keep writing this long.

Savannah foodie

The last crop of Beaujolais Nouveau was disappointing to me, even if a bottle could be found. Retailers baked off fall 2010 orders in the wake of a stale economy and poor sales the prior season.

But our palates get a reprieve every spring when new Vinho Verdes begins to fill wine racks.

Vinho Verde, literally “green wine,” from Portugal that brings freshness to the glass and refreshment to the palate. This export from the Minho region, in the nation’s northwest corner, can be sourced from more than 50,000 growers. Many of these are mom and pop operators who train vines to climb walls and fences in order to have space for vegetable plantings closer to the ground.

Vinho Verde is traditionally non–vintage and consumed quickly, so the wine on the shelf should always be a fresh bottling.

But why the name “green wine?”

The grapes are harvested slightly under ripe to retain crisp acidity and make wines that go perfectly with the local seafood and the warm summers of Portugal.

A trio of specifically chosen grapes make up traditional Vinho Verde: Loureiro adds aroma, Trajadura gives body and Padern lends acidity.

Ask your favorite wine vendor if their Vinho Verde is shipped under refrigeration – which is key for maintaining the wine’s freshness. Vinho Verdes that have been chilled all along the route are more costly – but only about a dollar more per bottle. It’s an investment that well worth it.

Average prices range from $9–$11.

Sip this well–chilled by itself or pair with salads, grilled fish, shrimp or scallops or grilled chicken. Its refreshing characteristics will also go nicely with spicy foods like barbecue – or even lighter Asian dishes.

I found these Vinho Verde examples on Savannah retail shelves: Gatao Vinho Verde: The ’freshest” I found on local shelves, the wine is a vivid, sharp refreshing untested wine as a Vinho Verde should be. Soft apple, peach pit and honey essences with non herbal tones and spritzy citrus fruit.

Don’t be put off by the cat on the label.

Vinha Real Vinho Verde: Crisp, fresh and nicely effervescent, it’s another from the new crop.

Quinta da Lixa Vinho Verde: This Portuguese beauty is refreshing and was the perfect foil for a savory antipasti plate I enjoyed at Leoci’s while tasting.

2008 Quinta da Avelada: Yeah, it’s an ’08, but still drinks very nice. Crisp, citrusy and nicely acidic, it still shows mild effervescence and all the proper Vinho Verde characteristics.

2008 Twin Vine Vinho Verde: This may be the price leader in the group, I found it for $4.99 at Habersham Beverage in Midtown. In ’08, this was a winner at nearly twice the money. For this kinda price, buy it up and serve it at your first big backyard party of the year.

Madeira madness...

Two things: Savannah Verdelho Madeira is from The Rare Wine Co. –– I spaced on the name in a previous column. And, I’m happy to report that Hugh Golson confirmed that the Savannah Madeira Society, despite many scholarly reports, is alive and well and tasting great Madeiras on a frequent basis. cs

After ordering, I checked into Foursquare and learned that my friend Melissa is “mayor” here. That means she’s been here a lot. It also means it’s probably not going to disappoint: Melissa has no reluctance about sharing a bad experience – and she doesn’t suffer fools lightly. Adjust your expectations.

This is not Japanese–style fine dining by any stretch. It’s barely a click above dining in the mall. This is counter service, fast food that’s meant to satisfy hunger, not generate 5–star accolades. I was No. 388. The menu, blessedly, is concise: a mere half dozen sushi rolls or so, another dozen, maybe, hot entrees. I went for one of each. My spicy tuna roll came sealed in a two–part plastic container, accessorized with squeeze packs of wasabi and ginger – and a neat dollop of chili sauce atop each of the eight segments. The roll was tightly built, with nice, sticky sushi rice, a fresh, generous portion of tuna peeked out of the rice and, yes, the chili sauce did guarantee spice with each bite. The steak yakisoba was filling, to say the least. Yakisoba, literally “fried noodle,” might have originated in Chinese cooking but has been fully integrated into Japanese festival cuisine. Heck, in Japan, you can buy yakisoba dishes served in a long roll, like a hot dog. Mine didn’t really need the additional hearty helping of another starch, in the form of fried rice. Bits of steak, julienne veggies and mushrooms dotted the steaming mound of noodles, which were nicely flavored – albeit challengingly rubbery. One snapped back and stuck to my eyeglasses. Trying to eat these noodles with a plastic fork is frustrating. Had I been issued a plastic knife, I might have been tempted to commit seppuku – Japanese ritual suicide. Instead, I fell back on another Japanese cultural practice, noodle slurping. There, that’s better. Even though the dish was flavored and seasoned to my liking, I took a dip or two into a sauce from the self–serve bar, a thin, brown fluid labeled as “New Steak Sauce.” OK, it was savory and seasoned, like a barely refined beef stock. Kinda left me curious about “Old Steak Sauce.”

Tom Fitzmorris does in New Orleans what I do here – except he’s done it for 38 years and enjoys a following via his blog, his newsletters and a daily radio show. He is the ultimate NOLA restaurant insider. His career, the evolution of New Orleans cuisine and more than a worthy selection of recipes are included in his new book, Hungry Town. (Stewart Tabori & Chang) In many ways, the book is an homage to the dedicated culinary professionals who returned to NOLA in the days after Hurricane Katrina. And Fitzmorris does an admirable job saluting the early culinarians, the upstarts who fueled the city’s nouvelle cuisine – and the collection of characters that make the Crescent City’s food scene hum. The dawning of the Age of Aquarius?: The Edward Sharpe gang

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros It’s been suggested that Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are at the leading edge of a folk/rock renaissance. Others have said that the Los Angeles–based band, which tours and performs as a kind of “ragtag hippie collective,” is merely a barefoot retro phenomenon and will fade fast.

What’s without question is this: Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros made a zillion new fans at the Coachella Festival last month, and will play Bonnaroo in June, and Lollapalooza and the Newport Folk Festival in August.

The band’s cross–country tour makes a stop here in Savannah at the Trustees Theater July 11.

You’ll know when the gang rolls into town – they drive a renovated school bus, painted white, out of which they’ll all pile (10, 11 or 12 of them, depending on who’s playing that night).

There is no Edward Sharpe. The visionary, frontman and lead singer is Alex Ebert, who bought the bus off Craigslist for $9,000. Ebert and his girlfriend, singer Jade Castrinos, began the Magnetic Zeros “organically,” by inviting all their friends over and creating new songs in their living room.

The music is infectious, and may include accordion, piano, banjo, trumpet, guitars and whatever else is laying

around. It’s folk, rock, reggae, pop ... mostly it just has a happy hippie vibe.

They all look like they’re having a great time.

“What we’ve been trying to do since the beginning of this climb is to not stray from the beauty and openness that started it,” Ebert says. “We want to keep things real and open and adventurous, and be sure the spirit of joy is still in it.”

Long–haired, dark–eyed, charismatic (and vaguely messianic, to be honest), Ebert fronts the live show in the guise of Edward Sharpe, a name he admits he just sort of made up.

Ebert says it’s all about the revival– like spirit of the live performance.

“At its best, a live show is completely transcendent,” he said in January. “The image I get is breaking through glass or shooting out into the free zone.

“We’ve played some really nice shows on a quiet level, like in Telluride, Colorado, for example. There was no piano, we were in a 200–person opera house, we had blankets on the floor and we sang the songs lightly, with delicacy. The songs flowered themselves.

“But then we do gusto shows on a variety of nights. Sometimes I’m really communicating with the audience and I’m hyper–engaged. Other times my eyes are closed and I just let it be what it is.”

Iron Man 2 doesn’t quite degenerate into Transformers 3, but those of us who thought the weakest part of the vastly enjoyable original was the title hero’s climactic showdown with Iron Monger will doubly wince upon seeing the battle royale chosen to end this second installment. In a variation of the axiom about too many chefs spoiling the broth, this culminates in a heavy–metal act that almost spoils the sequel.

Even before this supersized slugfest, this follow–up to the 2008 blockbuster has its fair share of problems. Recommended with major reservations, Iron Man 2 serves up the larger–than–life fun we expect from our summer flicks without ever quite coming into its own.

Whereas its predecessor kept its eye on the narrative ball, this one ends up all over the place, impatiently cramming in extraneous subplots and supporting characters that might have been better served by being placed in a holding pattern until the next film.

Set six months after the conclusion of the first film – the moment when billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) announces to the world that “I am Iron Man” – this opens with the government (repped by Garry Shandling’s Senator Stern) trying to get its hands on Stark’s design for the Iron Man suit so the U.S. military can use it as a weapon against its enemies. Stark flat–out refuses, noting with no trace of modesty that he has basically instigated an era of world peace via his role as global enforcer.

Yet not long after the narcissistic playboy has made his claim, he finds himself nearly defeated by a newcomer to the scene: Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), a Russian ex–con whose own body armor –– nearly identical to Stark’s – allows him to confront Iron Man in the guise of the supervillain Whiplash. Stark’s near–fatal encounter with Vanko places him in a precarious position – even his right–hand woman

Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and his best friend Rhodey (Don Cheadle, replacing Terrence Howard) begin to question the decisions he makes – and a rival weapons manufacturer, Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), decides to secretly employ Vanko in an attempt to stick it to both Tony Stark and his alter ego.

This is enough plot to propel the film, but wait! There’s more! Stark ends up hiring a personal assistant, Natalie Rushman (Scarlett Johansson), but there might be more to this bombshell than meets the lusting eye. Meanwhile, secret agent Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), briefly seen in the first picture (after the end credits, to be exact), returns to offer Stark some career advice. On top of this, Tony also has some daddy issues to sort out.

And as if all this isn’t enough, it also turns out that the power source in his chest that’s keeping him alive is also, paradoxically enough, killing him, and he has to work against the clock to find a cure. Oh, and did I mention that another ironclad superhero ends up stealing some of Iron Man’s thunder?

That’s a lot for one film to chew, and Iron Man 2 only manages to digest parts of it. The story strand involving Stark’s efforts to locate a cure for what ails him proves to be the deadliest, leading to tedious tinkering–in–the–lab moments.

And even some of what’s carried over from the first film doesn’t work as well: For example, the bantering between Tony and Pepper, so delightful in the original, here comes across as forced rather than playful, thereby stripping their burgeoning romance of much of its charm.

On the other hand, Rourke makes for a spectacular villain,

and the film really hums whenever he’s on screen. Also memorable is Rockwell, who adds some salty humor as the high–powered nerd who believes himself to be as cool as Stark.

Mainly, though, there’s Downey, who once again invests himself completely in his character. Not afraid to embrace Stark’s less appealing qualities, the actor repeatedly tests the limits of how much ill behavior audiences will accept from their heroes – his Stark is at times a drunken lout, an egotistical prick and a poor friend. Downey takes the role to the edge before snapping him back into place, a high–wire act that’s thrilling to behold.

In fact, Downey’s so good as Tony Stark that we miss him whenever he becomes the man in the iron mask. Then again, it wouldn’t be a superhero movie if the superhero never bothered to show up, would it?

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET Lamentably, it’s probably not a stretch to say that any movie at least 15 years old that’s vaguely remembered by the general public is now called a “classic” whenever it comes up in conversation or print (Howard the Duck excepted).

But make no mistake: The original 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street is hardly a classic – it wasn’t even the best entry in the never–ending Freddy Krueger franchise (that honor goes to 1987’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors).

But it did contain an interesting premise as well as a new horror icon in Robert Englund’s demonic dream weaver, a boogeyman who could kill people as they snoozed. continues on p. 30

This new Nightmare, in contrast, doesn’t boast of a single thing it can call its own. The latest soulless horror remake from Michael Bay (who’s already pillaged and plundered the likes of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Amityville Horror and Friday the 13th by producing needless rehashes), this film is the ultimate example of making movies on autopilot, with everyone going through the paces merely to plop something on the screen, the sole goal being to siphon lots of money from impressionable moviegoers responding to the brand–name recognition.

That’s the name of the game, of course – aside from Max Bialystock in The Producers, nobody sets out to make a flop – but couldn’t somebody have had a little fun with this project?

As it stands, the movie is dull more than anything, furthered hampered by unappealing teen protagonists (at least the original had a memorable heroine in Heather Langenkamp and a future star in Johnny Depp), clumsy direction

by Samuel Bayer (there’s nothing even remotely resembling a scare in this thing), a slack script full of risible mo-

ments (such as the clod who somehow falls asleep while swimming laps in the school pool!), cheesy CGI effects and, most disappointing of all, a letdown performance by the talented Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy (he possesses neither Englund’s enervating energy nor his way with a quip).

The bottom line is that it isn’t just Elm Street that’s affected; you’ll find a nightmare on any street that’s housing a theater with the misfortune to be playing this monstrosity.

Death At A Funeral A remake of a film that was released a mere three years ago – wow, that was quick; what’s coming out next week, a remake of March’s Hot Tub Time Machine? – director Neil LaBute and writer Dean Craig scuttle the British setting of 2007’s Death at a Funeral in order to stamp this with a “Made In USA” label.

The result is a perfectly pleasant piffle, a comedy that fails to produce many big laughs but knows how to parcel out its small ones at an acceptable clip. Still, this isn’t half as uproarious as

LaBute’s ill–fated remake of The Wicker Man, a bomb whose unintentional laughs continue to delight viewers via well–spliced YouTube compilations.

But I digress. Death at a Funeral focuses on the events surrounding the laying to rest a well–respected man who leaves behind a wide assortment of friends and family members. Among the ranks of the bereaved is his oldest son Aaron (Chris Rock), who’s forced to shoulder the entire cost of the funeral since he can’t count on his successful yet irresponsible brother Ryan (Martin Lawrence).

But Aaron’s issues with Ryan take a back seat when a stranger (Peter Dinklage, reprising his role from the original) arrives at the funeral home hoping to blackmail the siblings over their father’s extracurricular activities. A true ensemble piece, this suffers when humor takes a back seat to drama – for example, the plotline involving a slick businessman’s (Luke Wilson) attempts to win back the deceased’s niece (Avatar’s Zoe Saldana) adds nothing.

But the picture is breezy enough to always get back on track fairly quick, and there are some nice comic moments from Danny Glover as a cantankerous uncle, Tracy Morgan as a perpetually nervous acquaintance, and James Marsden as Saldana’s boyfriend, whose accidental ingestion of hallucinogens leads to some madcap mishaps.

dragon slayers, and he gets his chance when he wounds a feared Night Fury.

But rather than go for the kill, Hiccup ends up releasing the creature, and before long, the two become inseparable – a real dilemma, considering the lad is expected to soon complete his schooling and start slaughtering dragons.

Writer–directors Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders (scripting with William Davies) gently advance the themes of acceptance and understanding without any pushy shoving, and the animators do a bang–up job in their designs of the various breeds of dragons on view throughout the picture. As expected, they save their best work for the Night Fury (named Toothless by Hiccup), endearing him to audiences by providing him with quasi–feline features (he looks like a silky black cat in close–ups).

Craig Ferguson contributes some good moments as Hiccup’s trainer Gobber, and how odd is it to see Butler involved in a film that doesn’t suck?

THE BACK–UP PLAN Jennifer Lopez’s first screen outing in four years isn’t a motion picture so much as it’s a new form of Chinese water torture: Seemingly innocuous at first, it continues to pelt the viewer with one abysmal scene after another until insanity seems like the only logical result. Lopez stars as Zoe, a single woman who, tired of waiting for Mr. Right while her biological clock continues to tick away, elects to conceive through artificial insemination. But wouldn’t you know it, as she walks out of the clinic, she bumps into a charismatic cheesemaker named Stan (Alex O’Loughlin), and they begin dating. Zoe waits until Stan falls in love with – and makes love to – her before she alerts him to the

Date Night The third time’s the charm thanks to Date Night, a likable lark that just makes the cut due largely to the appeal of stars Steve Carell and Tina Fey. After suffering through the dreadful one–two sucker punch of Did You Hear About the Morgans? and The Bounty Hunter, it’s nice to cozy up to a decent comedy that also centers on a marital couple trying to stay one step ahead of murderous thugs. The chemistry between Bounty’s Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston was even more non–existent than that between Morgans’ Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker, but that’s clearly not the case here.

As Jersey suburbanites Phil and Claire Foster, Carell and Fey not only bounce off each other as accomplished comedians, but they’re also completely believable as a longtime married couple who love each other but worry that all excitement has been drained from their union. On one of their patented date nights away from the kids and other familial obligations, they opt to forego the usual salmon ‘n’ potato skins at the local dive in order to head to Manhattan for a swanky dinner at a posh new seafood restaurant. Unable to secure

seats (as the haughty maitre d’ informs them, reservations are required a month in advance), they decide to pose as the Tripplehorns when the latter–named fail to turn up when their table is called.

Unfortunately for Phil and Claire, their impulsive act leads to a case of mistaken identity straight out of Alfred Hitchcock: As in North by Northwest and Saboteur (to name but two), good people find themselves running from dangerous villains while trying to clear their names and escape with all vital organs intact. Shawn Levy is a mediocre director at best (Night at the Museum, ill–advised remakes of The Pink Panther and Cheaper by the Dozen), which explains why the movie grinds to a dead halt whenever the attention shifts from the leading players’ personalities to the usual bouts of gunplay and vehicular destruction.

But the film clicks whenever Carell and Fey are allowed to fully engage each other, whether they’re serving up the anticipated comic riffs or, somewhat unexpectedly, settling down to discuss the commonplace difficulties faced by married couples who feel they can no longer surprise (or even excite) their partners. And while most of the supporting characters are stock (crooked cops, sleazy mob kingpin, sassy babysitter, etc.), there’s a nice contribution by Mark Wahlberg as a buff security expert whose religion apparently prohibits the donning of shirts – this macho man’s perpetual refusal to cover his bulging pecs proves to be a bright running gag.

KICK–ASS Based on Mark Millar’s popular comic series, Kick–Ass begins as a PG–13 delight before eventually turning into an R–rated ordeal. Adaptations of this sort often squarely fit into the more restrictive rating (e.g. Watchmen, Sin City), and Millar’s illustrated series certainly isn’t for the kiddies. But despite this fact, here’s one graphic (in all senses of the word) retelling that would have benefited from a more family–friendly rendition.

The title refers to Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a geeky teenager who loves comic books and wonders why no one has ever mimicked the caped crusaders seen battling evildoers in print.

Even though he concedes that his only superpower is being “invisible to girls,” Dave decides to don a slick scuba suit and mask and take to the streets to fight crime under the moniker of Kick–Ass.

His first encounter with a couple of street punks ends with him receiving a shiv in his stomach before getting slammed by a speeding car, two incidents that land him in the hospital.

Released with damaged nerve endings and a semi–steel body that basically turns him into a Wolverine–with–training–wheels, he again tries his hand at crime–fighting – this time, his skirmish is captured on film and broadcast all over the Internet, turning him into a media sensation.

As long as Kick–Ass remains focused on Dave and his exploits in and out of costume, it remains a clever modern riff on the classic Marvel tale, like watching Peter Parker’s travails reimagined for Napoleon Dynamite. But this is only half the movie. The rest involves the efforts of two far more accomplished superheroes, Big Daddy (a woefully miscast Nicolas Cage) and Hit–Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz), to take down a ruthless criminal named Frank D’Amico (Mark Strong, fresh from playing the ruthless criminal in Sherlock Holmes).

Big Daddy and Hit–Girl are the secret identities of ex–cop Damon Macready and his 9–year–old daughter Mindy, and they’re both bent on revenge. Make that bloody revenge. A glaring streak of sadism proves to be Kick–Ass’s undoing, as the can–do pluck and spirit exhibited in, say, Spider–Man is ignored in favor of unrelenting violence at every turn.

Writer–director Matthew Vaughn (who previously helmed the memorable Layer Cake) and co–writer Jane Goldman might believe it’s fair game for the bad guys to get offed in jokey, gruesome ways (most notably the goon who explodes in an oversized microwave), but how funny is it when D’Amico fatally shoots a costumed kid in the head after mistaking him for the real Kick–Ass? Equally troubling is the handling of the character of Hit–Girl, who, taught by her father, proceeds to kill scores of men (and one woman) by any means necessary (guns, knives, you name it). One character chastises Damon Macready for turning Mindy into a pint–size killer, correctly asserting that this little girl deserves a normal childhood.

Yet Kick–Ass then completely ignores this line of thought, allowing Macready to steadfastly remain a good guy and never once questioning the fact that he’s turned his daughter into a soulless killing machine. CS

fact that she’s pregnant and that he’ll have to deal with this issue if he wants to permanently commit to her. Zoe’s actions throughout the picture make her a particularly odious heroine, but that’s the least of this film’s problems: More detrimental are the slapstick gags scripted by Kate Angelo and directed by Alan Poul, including (but not limited to) the scene in which Zoe wrestles with her dog for possession of a pregnancy test stick and the sequence in which a woman gives birth in a bathtub while members of her single–mom support group chant around her (speaking of the support group, this movie exhibits nothing but contempt and derision toward single women). There’s also the usual rom–com character of the outspoken best friend (Michaela Watkins) whose wisecracks are supposed to be funny but are instead merely obnoxious, the expected cutaway shots to the mutt whimpering or barking whenever one of the humans says something stupid (needless to say, this happens frequently), and an unhealthy obsession with scatological humor. The only bright spot is seeing ’70s sitcom vets Linda Lavin (Alice) and Tom Bosley (Happy Days) in minor roles; the rest is unspeakably awful.

by Cotti and Adams, which assessed the economic impact on bars separately from the rest of the hospitality industry.

“When we gathered the data we found that, on average, there was a moderate decline in their business after the pass of a ban, and that’s nationwide,” says Cotti.

The patchwork problem For bars, the migration of smokers away from their usual watering holes is exacerbated by the lack of equanimity for smoking policies across neighboring jurisdictions: If a smoker can drive across a jurisdictional boundary – a city or county line – to a place where bars still welcome smoking, then they will probably do so.

This exodus from smoke-free bars is what leads to the loss of revenue for business owners. There’s also evidence that it can lead to an increase in drunk driving, according to another report from Cotti and Adams.

“A lot of the increase in drunk driving we were observing was due to cross-border shopping — people crossing jurisdictional boundaries so that

they can drink and smoke in whatever establishments are right outside of the jurisdiction of the law,” says Cotti.

If Savannah takes the lead on creating more stringent tobacco policies but those policies are not also adopted by Chatham County as a whole — as well as neighboring counties like Liberty and Bryan, where there is also a higher percentage of adult smokers — then the risk of dangerous behavior and negative economic impacts become more likely.

“It doesn’t mean it overwhelms all the potential health benefits that can occur from eliminating a second hand smoke externality in the public domain,” Cotti told Connect last week.

“We don’t want this to be taken as slight against smoking bans. It’s just one element that goes into determining if a public policy has net benefit for society.”

The last drag With the number of communities enforcing smoking bans growing quickly, and the overwhelming research detailing the detrimental health effects, it’s clear we’re living in the last days of tobacco, but the solution might not be

as simple as pushing smokers outdoors.

“What is very obvious is that leaving the litter of cigarette butts has been a continual concern downtown because we don’t have a vacuum that runs up and down every sidewalk or cleans out the tree wells,” says Lise Sundrla, the Executive Director of the Savannah Development and Renewal Authority.

Last year, the SDRA conducted a survey with a grant from Keep America Beautiful to better understand the amount of cigarette butts being discarded in the streets.

“In just a two–day period, they picked up over 4,000 cigarette butts along Broughton Street,” says Sundrla, who adds that the same staff returned to three intersections a month later and found nearly 2,000 cigarette butts had accumulated since their last outing.

Although not everyone encounters issues with second hand smoke everyday, “what does become a continuous issue is the litter that’s left,” says Sundrla.

Worth the effort By raising issues with the potential change to smoking policy, it’s not in

an attempt to undermine the efforts to improve public health. The solution to the second hand smoke problem may not be as simple as it would seem, that doesn’t mean the issue should be abandoned, only further examined.

“The folks who work in those environments – yes, they choose to work there – but given the opportunity, there’s a lot of workers that would prefer not to,” says Kreissler.

There does seem to be pressure on some employees to view smoking as a necessary evil of employment.

“I don’t smoke,” says one bartender, explaining why he’d prefer the change to a smoke free policy, “but if it makes the customers happy than you’ve got deal with it.”

It’s also not only nonsmokers who are supportive of the potential change.

“I personally am a smoker, but wouldn’t mind seeing it pass through,” says Travis Coles, a manager at Club One. “I would probably smoke far less if I wasn’t allowed to smoke inside.” cs

(March 21–April 19) What happens when someone “sells out”? Typically, it refers to a person who overrides her highest artistic standards or her soul’s mandates in order to make a bundle of money. But I want to enlarge the definition to encompass any behavior that seeks popular appeal at the expense of authenticity, or any action that sacrifices integrity for the sake of gaining power. I think you have to be especially on guard against this lapse in the coming days, Aries –– not only in yourself but also in those you’re close to.

(April 20–May 20) “I can’t live the button–down life,” says cartoon character Homer Simpson. “I want it all: the terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles.”
