Profile of Saint Francis of Assisi
St. Francis was born in Assisi, Italy around 1181 or 1182. He was born into a wealthy family of a cloth merchant. During his youth, Francis lived a privileged life full of wealth. He had a kind and generous nature that was full of joy and people loved him. Being raised with such wealth, Francis was carefree. Francis became a soldier for a short time and was taken into prison for almost a year. Then he became ill. It wasn’t long after that Francis made a spiritual change that inspired him to abandon all of his possessions and family’s wealth so that he could devote his life to God.

“We are all creatures of one family.”
He lived a life of good deeds and generosity towards the poor and the sick. He gave every thing he had to the poor and in turn lived in extreme poverty amongst beggars. He took care of lepers. He was compassionate and had so much love for all living things and all of God’s creatures and of what God created. He was known to have a special connection with the environment and with animals. Francis treated all living beings as either a brother or Francissister.
once went to a church where Christ asked him to repair His church. Because Francis went to serve the poor, Francis’s father questioned him. It was at this time that Francis renounced his inheritance. He went to Rome and received permission in 1209 to start a new religious order known as the Franciscans.
God, our Heavenly Father, You created the world to serve humanity’s needs and to lead them to you. By our own fault, we have lost the beautiful relationship which we once had with all your creation. Help us to see that by restoring our relationship with you, we will also restore it with all your Creation. Give us the grace to see all animals as gifts from you and to treat them with respect for they are your creation. We pray for all animals who are suffering as a result of our neglect. May the order you originally established be once again restored to the whole world through the interces sion of the Glorious Virgin Mary, the prayers of St. Francis, and the merits of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with you now and forever. Amen. (from various sources) in the Vatican City animals of all kinds are brought for a blessing. The ceremony takes place each year on January 17th cel ebrating the Feast of St. Anthony the Abbot, the patron of all livestock farmers and the protector of animals. The Italian Association of Farmers (AIA) has a traditional yearly exhibition at St. Peter’s Square. During this time farmers bring their animals such as cows, horses, rabbits, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, hens, mules, dogs, cats and geese. Roman citizens will also bring their pets to attend this mass and blessing. The AIA provides free check ups for pets by the associations own veterinarians on the day of the celebration.

The Wallingford Dog Lovers Association (WDLA) met with Bikers Against Animal Cru elty Inc, (B.A.A.C.) a 501(c)(3) non-profit orga nization at the Bert & Harry Subkowsky Bark Park in an effort to help dog owners with respon sible pet ownership. Educational and informa tional lawn signs were placed within the park. Pet ownership is a large responsibility and having a safe place to exercise your dog and have informa tion offered to whoever would need it can only benefit both the owner as well as the dog. The Bark Park is located at 355 Quinnipiac St, Wall ingford and is so beautiful and well maintained, B.A.A.C. members will certainly be visiting this little oasis with their pooches very often! Formed in September 2012, WDLA of Wallingford, CT is a small group of volunteers that perform main tenance, hold fun dog events, and raise funds for the dog park.

Volunteers joined forc es with Mark to design the park, establish the park rules, fund-raise, advocate with Wallingford Park and Rec to bring this park to fruition, and continue in Mark’s memory.
town residents Alberta and Harry Subkowsky. Their children, Robert and Donna, graciously donated a generous sum of money in memory of their parents. This contribution went directly to the purchase and installation of the fence around the dog park which was the most important item needed in the development of the dog park.

Be sure to provide enough resources. This in cludes resting places, toys and enrichment to support all pets in your home.
If you are still searching to find the reason for conflict in your pet’s relationship, it may be time to seek the help of a professional. Contact a rep utable, trusted animal behavior professional to guide you in the right direction.
Make sure each pet has space to be alone. Some pets get easily over-stimulated so “alone” space allows them time to relax and reset. Many cats prefer to use cat trees or elevated spaces for this purpose while dogs may choose to go to another room or enclosed kennel.

As research continues to bring new insights into the relationship between these unique species, it is important for pet owner’s to consider the difference in each animal’s perspective of living amongst one another. Creating the foundation for your pet’s relationship is the first step in find ing harmony in your home. These tips can help you get started:
Keep a routine. Inconsistent exercise, meal times and interactions can cause additional stress on your pets and their relationships.
Understanding the impact health & age has on relationships. Senior pets or pets with injury, ill ness or disease may want more time alone and less interactions.
Start introductions right. Never force your dog and cat to meet. Introductions should be slow so they have time to learn about each other. A gate or barrier can help pets to feel more secure when meeting for the first time.
Are you one of the many pet owners deal ing with conflict between your dog and cat?
Health Check. Be sure to keep up with routine health exams for your pets. A pet who is in pain or may be ill can become easily agitated. If you are noticing changes in your pet’s behavior, share this observation with your veterinarian.
By: Amanda Caron
Pay attention to interactions. Watch your pets when they are together to determine what may be causing issues.
Provide exercise. We know how important it is to offer mental and physical exercise for your pet’s overall health and happiness, additionally it plays a huge role in their relationships, too.
Since 2014, Amanda has worked to support dogs, cats and their dedicated owners through both common and complex behaviors. You can spruce things up around your home by painting a wooden bench in bold, festive and native colors. Here you will be guided through five steps for repainting a bench that will add a little bit of that southwestern flair to your home or garden. This DYI project is simple, easy and fun.
Clean the bench by taking a cloth and wiping the bench down from dust. If there’s heavier dirt, take a little bit of dish soap and water on a clean cloth and wash then rinse the bench down in the needed area.

Decide if you want to remove the paint or leave it on. If the paint on the bench is peeling then you have a couple of choices. You can sand the bench in the affected areas where it is peeling or worn down the most, wipe the bench down, and then paint. If you choose this option you must keep in mind that when you paint the new color, traces of the old color may show through in some areas of the bench. This may be a look that you want to have. However, if the peeling paint consumes most of the bench and the bench appears to be in bad shape then using a paint stripper to remove the paint completely is a good idea. A paint stripper will be able to loosen the paint, peeling or not, for easy removal. If you choose to use a paint stripper then be sure to wear the proper gloves, face mask, and follow the instructions on the container. Use a spatula to scrape away the paint and a clean cloth to wipe the area down. Either way, having a smooth surface is critical to having a well-painted bench so it may be necessary to use the sandpaper to smooth down any rough surface areas that the bench currently has. Be sure to wipe the bench down after using sandpaper.

Keep dogs away from the area you plan to work in. According to the ASPCA, waterbased paints are non-toxic and can cause gastrointestinal upset if consumed in small amounts. However, some paint may contain lead that can seriously affect your dog’s health. Paint remover has dangerous toxins and solvents. If your dog inhales, has had these items splash in the eye area, or ingests any of these things you must call or contact your veterinarian immediately. Your dog’s health can be jeopardized.
#3
Once your bench has completely dried, move it to where you want the bench to be placed. Clean up after your mess. Be sure you clean the paint brush, throw away any newspaper used or shake out the drop cloth, seal up the paint remover and/or paint well, put all items away in a safe area, sweep and clean up any dust or mess that is left on the floor.
It’s time to paint. Use even brush strokes when applying the paint. Paint in the same direction as the grain of the wood. You may need to apply a second or third coat depending on the look you are trying to achieve. If you decide to paint in multiple coats, make sure that the coat you painted dries before applying another coat.

Tucson is a super cool city just short of a 2-hour drive south of Phoe nix. Weather here is typically a little cooler than up in the Phoenix valley and metro area. This small city is upscale but in a down to earth sort of way. Tucson is completely surrounded by mountain ranges. To the east you have the Rincon Mountains, to the west are the Tucson Mountains, to the northwest are the Tortolita Mountains, in the north and northeast are the Santa Catalina Mountains, and to the south and southeast are the Santa Rita Mountains. Two hours south of Tucson is the border to Mexico and not much further out are the beaches in far southeast corner of the state is Cochise County. Here, you’ll find grass lands, mountain ranges and some farming communities. A few must see towns are Bisbee, Sierra Vista and Tombstone. The major highway here takes you into southern New Mexico.

Blessing of Animals Fall 2013 | High Desert Dog • 5 22 • Fall 2022 | Connecticut Dog
“We are all creatures of one family.” – St. Francis of Assisi

“Those who will exclude any of God’s creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity will deal likewise with their fellow man.”
Prayer for Animals
Francis died on October 4, 1226 in Italy and shortly after his death was canonized by Pope Gregory ThroughoutIX. the world, October 4th marks the celebration and feast day for Saint Francis of Assisi. This day is celebrated with a traditional Blessing of Animals.
Profile of Saint Francis of Assisi
once went to a church where Christ asked him to repair His church. Because Francis went to serve the poor, Francis’s father questioned him. It was at this time that Francis renounced his inheritance. He went to Rome and received permission in 1209 to start a new religious order known as the Franciscans.
God,
our Heavenly Father, You created the world to serve humanity’s needs and to lead them to you. Amen. (from various sources)
Each year in the Vatican City animals of all kinds are brought for a blessing.

Having 12 rescue dogs of their own presented a problem when the Farinas family went away. For some of their dogs, boarding would prove extremely stressful as it is for many dogs. The idea was to create a home-like, cage free, safe environment with lots of out door space to run and play most of the day and for the dogs to be able to sleep in comfy beds or couches at night.

So many of our local rescue organizations and animal shelters are overwhelmed with home less dogs that need to find their forever families. This great need is, in many ways, due to the large number of returned pets from animal adoptions that took place at the start of covid-19. People are moving, going back to work, taking vacations, losing their jobs, suffering from either financial and/or medical hardships along with a variety of other reasons causing the uptick in returned dogs to shelters across our state. The combination of the many new dogs routinely coming into the shelters, along with the overwhelming animal surrenders, our local animal shelters and rescue organizations depend greatly on the generosity, love and sup port from volunteers, donators, and adopters.

Whether it’s providing resources so pets can keep their homes, or being a safe haven for critters with nowhere to turn, the Connecticut Humane Society (CHS) serves vulnerable pets across the state. Founded in 1881, CHS is the oldest and most comprehensive animal welfare organization in Connecticut. CHS has long focused on homeless pets, veterinary care and adoptions, but also has programs making it pos sible for pets to keep their families: the Pet Food Pantry, reduced-fee Fox Memorial Clinic, trav eling wellness clinics, behavior assistance, and crisis foster homes. CHS is the leading resource in the state for companion animal welfare, en riching the lives of families and communities through adoption services, medical care, educa tion, and prevention of cruelty. As an indepen dent nonprofit located in Newington, Waterford and Westport, CHS receives no ongoing munic ipal funding and isn’t associated with national animal welfare groups. The pets rely on the gen erosity and support of donors.

Today we are one of the oldest and most respected animal welfare organizations in the northeast. We cur rently have three primary goals. First, providing shelter and veterinary care to homeless animals until they can be matched with responsible owners. Second, reducing the number of stray animals through spaying and neutering at our POA SPAY! high-volume clinic. Third, increase community awareness and education regarding animal welfare topics including animal care and trap spay/neuter release programs (TNR).

The Little Guild is a 501(c)(3) founded in 1960, it’s the only full-service animal shelter in Northwest Con necticut. The Little Guild goes well beyond taking care of the daily and medical needs of the animals. Highly successful adoptions are achieved through individual ized training and behavior assessments, playgroups, learning activities, temperament testing, socialization, appropriate exercise and mental stimulation. These sustained efforts yield one of the highest save rates nationally for a no-kill shelter. In 2020, we had an astounding 100% save rate. The Little Guild offers ani mal education programs and services for the commu nity throughout the year, including free dog training classes and vaccination clinics. We also raise money to support no-cost neuter and spay services for low-in come pet owners, as well as supply a pet pantry of cat and dog food, cat litter and pet supplies made possible through donations by the community.
