MORE THAN JUST COFFEE. A European-style coffee shop in the farmington valley

Dom’s Coffee is a family run and operated business that has a deep love for all dogs. To help make a difference in the lives of local dogs, Dom’s Coffee recognizes Double Dog Rescue for all they do. Double Dog Rescue is in need of volunteers, local people within the community that can help run dog related errands. Errands would consist of picking up dogs for transport, getting dogs to their veterinary appointments or quarantine facilities, fostering, participation in dog events, and computer work reviewing potential adopters. This will allow the rescue to have more time to help more dogs. If interested, please contact the rescue at email: ddr@doubledogrescue.org. www.doubledogrescue.org

Andrius and Asta each grew up with a dog and understand the importance of having a pet as a part of the family. When they started dating, their first “child” was a dog, Lexas, who traveled over the Atlantic to America with Andrius, Asta and baby Dominykas. When Dominykas was old enough to take care of a dog himself, they expanded their family to include Lucky, who joined them on Christmas 2020! Lucky has been the greatest joy, through the antics of puppyhood, family trips to local beaches, and morning snuggles over a cup of coffee at home. Brutus is a neutered male Staffordshire/Mastiff mix who is approximately 6-years old. Can you believe this sweet, lovable hunk has been waiting for a forever home for over 5 years! Brutus is obedient and extremely loyal. He desperately needs a breed experienced owner where he will be the only dog in a low traffic adult household so that he can decompress from the shelter life. He would also love to play with his ball in his very own fully fenced yard. Brutus walks nicely on leash and he knows some commands like sit, down, paw, and stay. Brutus is a loyal boy who needs a chance to bond with someone. Could that someone be you?

Adoptable Hero Hounds

For adoptable dogs Beau and Wilson, puppyhood was far from ordinary. These two year old hounds dedicated the beginning of their lives to veterinary research, and for the past few months have been living in foster homes provided by Dog Star Rescue, a rescue organization in Connecticut. Starting their lives in a medical facility, they each played an integral role in changing the way veterinarians treat pets that suffer from shock and traumatic bleeding by acting as blood donors. Now, these impressive boys are looking for their forever homes. “Beau and Wilson donated the first 18 months of their lives to research that will have a lasting impact on thousands of companion animals,” said Hayley Hapeslagh, Beau’s foster parent. “While we wish they didn’t have to start their lives this way, their sacrifice has and will continue to save countless pets. They truly are heroes.” Unfortunately, much like the start of their lives, the adoption process has not been simple for Beau and Wilson. Because they have specific needs, these two dogs have been awaiting their best-fit owners for months. Due to their unique beginning, they can be timid, mistrusting or uncomfort-

He was a morale booster, rescued injured soldiers, and gained paise for capturing a German soldier. The Smithsonian placed his preserved remains on permamant display in 2004 at the National Museum of American History. How E.F.T. Can Support You and Your Dog Written by: Mary Albanese | Photo credit: Sophia Belle Art methods. Although a session may be virtual and there may be no physical contact, the effects of tapping are not diluted. I have used E.F.T. with observable results on many dogs, cats, and horses—and even with a guinea pig, tigers, lions, and a bear!

E.F.T.—short for Emotional Freedom Technique, a.k.a. tapping—has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine. First developed for humans by Gary Craig in the 1990s, it is one of the modalities I frequently use in my work as an animal communicator/energy worker because of its applicability to so many situations. The tapping sequence utilizes specific acupressure points connected to organ systems and their corresponding emotions. Any blocked emotions are released through the prescribed tapping sequence accompanied by a practitioner-developed “script.” Tapping has been a versatile supportive tool for me when working with animals such as those who are lost, aggressive, have behavioral issues, or are assimilating to a new home or life circumstance. It can be done in person or remotely, it requires no special tools, and the pet does not need to be touched because there are a variety of delivery

SOUL SONGS FOR PAWS AND CLAWS Written By Lenny Paquette, Canine Behaviorist, Canine Cadre, Wallingford Photo Credit: Lenny Paquette

One of my more memorable experiences involved a very chagrined dog trainer and her high-spirited dog, Penny, who communicated to me that she wanted to help teach her mom’s obedience class. An obedience failure herself despite her mother’s best efforts, Penny was an unlikely teaching assistant because of her rambunctiousness. I explained E.F.T. to her mom and did a session. By the end Penny was asleep on the floor while her mom sat astonished by the effectiveness of a single session. Mary Albanese, ZenZu Animal Communication and Energy Work, is animal communicator and energy worker. Mary allies with other animal professionals as part of a team approach and has experience working with domestic, farm, and exotic animals. She is available for private consultations, presentations, workshops and classes, and as a vendor at public and private events. See her ad on page 25.

Zorro Needs a Hero

Article and image provided by the Danbury Animal Welfare Society. Zorro needs a HERO! Zorro is our longest resident at Danbury Animal Welfare Society (DAWS) and has been in the shelter for over two years. During that time, this 70 lb. four-year-old shepherd mix has been working very hard on training and we believe his time has come to find his furever home! Back in 2019, when Zorro first arrived to DAWS after being saved from a high kill shelter in Kentucky, he began developing some behavioral challenges, making it difficult to find him the right home. Through extensive training, Zorro has proved himself to be a pup that can develop solid friendships with humans, and even befriend select dogs. Zorro has been trained using treats and he eagerly sits, lies down and gives a paw on command. He’s done very well with car rides. He has enjoyed many hikes, walks, and play-time with his volunteer team. Time and time again, he has shown what a good boy he is, he just needs to find that special person! With a dog like Zorro, he will need a very specific adopter. If you’re interested in adopting Zorro, please visit www.daws.org.

We have all been touched by them, loved by them, and shed many tears when this furry family member goes back to Heaven. Many of us remember the songs written for them like, “How Much is That Doggy in the Window?” performed by Patti Page. Then there was “Ol Shep”, performed by Elvis Presley, “Old Yeller” performed by Jerome Courtland in the movie “Old Yeller”, and “Shannon” performed by Henry Gross. Everyone thought Shannon was his girlfriend! Newer songs to appear are “Maggie’s Song” by Chris Stapleton, “Dumb End of the Leash” by Lenny Paquette on his third album, “When She Came Into My Life”, and “Your Dinner’s In the Dog” by Lenny Paquette, released to YouTube in 2021. This video features “Kato” the Author’s dog, handled by Angela Paquette. This video was completed shortly before Kato went back to spirit. The decision to send them home can be eviscerating. So much honor is given to our dogs through music. We all know that they bring unconditional love, and will forgive you in a heartbeat. Another lesson dog’s teach is they live in the present moment, and do not dwell on yesterday. They can show impeccable memory. Dogs don’t have the gift to think about the future unless we show them a leash, or say the “cookie?” word! Many dogs have an amazing sixth sense and are truly telepathic. ith so many veterinarians throughout Connecticut, it may be difficult to find the right doctor for your pet. When choosing a veterinarian you should approach your search with the same considerations as you would when looking for a doctor for yourself. Think about what kind of practice you want to use and the expecta-

tions that you have. Do your research online by visiting their website. Learn more about the veterinarians at the practice and their approach to medicine. Evaluate what the staff is like and how the practice runs, especially when it comes to emergency visits, late night or otherwise. Consider the location of the practice, their hours and fees. Get referrals. Although it can be confusing as to which veterinarian is the right fit for your family and pet, take some time to thumb through the next few pages to learn more about some of the local veterinarian practices within your community.

eterinary hospitals are busier than ever. Between new clients, increased appointment requests, Covid-19 precautions, and more, veterinary practices across the state (and the country) are experiencing a whole new normal.

Appointments are booking farther out, and phone lines are jam-packed. But there are ways you can help yourself as a pet owner and help your pet’s veterinary team, too…which will, of course, benefit your pet!

• Use your veterinary office’s phone app if they have one! You can schedule a routine appointment, ask a question, refill prescriptions, and more. Using the app helps streamline communication and lets you go back to review the information. Plus, you won’t have to wait on hold or play phone tag! • Request refills for prescription foods and medications early—don’t wait until you’re out. Just like you’re experiencing shortages in the grocery store, veterinarians are experiencing supply issues with some medications and prescription foods. Ordering early gives you and your veterinary team time to get the medication or food, or determine a back-up plan if the item is unavailable. • Confirm your appointment as soon as contacted so your veterinarian knows definitely coming. If you need to or reschedule, let your veterinarian right away so they can help you find 10 • Spring 2022 | Connecticut Dog

appointment and give your old spot to another pet who needs it. • If you’ve visited another veterinary office, an emergency hospital, or a vaccine clinic, ask them to send your pet’s complete records (including any diagnostics, like blood work or x-rays) to your veterinarian before your appointment. Then your veterinarian can review the records so they are fully prepared for your pet and can make the best use of your appointment time.

• Be sure to compete the full course of your pet’s medication; skipping doses or ending early without consulting your veterinarian could land you back in the office.

• If you aren’t able to attend the veterinary appointment yourself, make sure the human accompanying your pet is fully informed of their needs and reason for the visit.

• If you have a curbside appointment, stay onsite and answer your phone as soon as the office calls. This gets you and your pet back on the road home as soon as possible . • Be patient and kind. The veterinary staff loves your pet like their own, and wants the best for all of you. They’re here on your pet’s worst days and best days, and are working hard to keep them happy and healthy, even as the world (and Covid) keeps throwing curveballs.

• You’ll probably have questions, and your veterinarian is going to give you a lot of advice and information. Write it down to ensure you’re following your veterinarian’s advice and caretaking instructions, especially if your pet requires medication.

Your veterinary office may have more ideas on ways everyone can help each other—reach out to ask! Remember that your vet is part of your pet’s care team and working together will make the experience the best it can be everyone involved.

Our mission at MVP is to educate and guide individuals and families to promote and effect the best quality of life possible for their pets. This can be accomplished through a holistic perspective with consideration of each pet’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. We look at health and disease on a continuum, involving physical, mental, and emotional aspects, all of which are influenced by diet, exercise and environmental factors. We work with our companion animal patients’ families, within the parameters of their own reality (how much time they have, their philosophies about health, what they are able to provide in terms of food and exercise to make positive change). Our tool box is large and diverse, enabling us to individualize care using western medicine (including diagnostic, surgical, and dental services), supplements, acupuncture, Chinese herbal formulas, chiropractic, nutritional counseling, laser therapy, rehabilitation, and training and behavior modification. We do this always with compassion and patience, treating every pet just as we would our own.

Northeastern Veterinary Care Center At Northeastern Veterinary Care Center (NEVCC), we provide high-quality care with a hometown vet feel. Located at 144 Whitehall Avenue in Mystic, Connecticut, NEVCC occupies a historic site boasting a long history of local veterinarians dating back to 1953. After purchasing the property in January 2017, Dr. Dianne Beal and her husband, Clayton, embarked upon the ambitious redesign of the facility to incorporate the latest breakthroughs in design and technology, all focused on improving efficiency and enhancing the experience for both our clients and their pets. Animals have always been a central part of Dr. Beal’s life and her goal has been not only to serve her clients and their pets, but her community as well. After a career in research she returned to school to follow her dream of becoming a veterinarian. She obtained her DVM from Iowa State University and completed a portion of her training in the United Kingdom, attending the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Following graduation, Dr. Beal completed a small animal internship with a heavy focus on emergency medicine at Regional Veterinary Referral Center in Springfield, Virginia, and has worked in small animal practice both in Connecticut and Rhode Island. Dr. Beal has a soft spot for her older patients and a special interest in dermatology. Our clients and their pets are part of our family, and our goal is to provide personalized attention with compassion, kindness, and respect. Our staff follows the principles of Fear Free® veterinary practice: strategies aimed at lowering stress levels for all our patients, delivering high-quality care in a positive, nurturing environment. We are happy to announce that NEVCC has resumed in-clinic visits for clients! Due to ongoing pandemic concerns, we do require all guests, regardless of vaccine status, to wear masks covering both mouth and nose and ask all to hand sanitize upon entering. Please note that due to physical constraints, we are limiting one client to an exam room with their pet(s). And for those who prefer the convenience of curbside appointments, just call the clinic upon arrival and we can certainly accommodate. Unfortunately, we are still unable to resume our housecall service, but look forward to doing so in the future!

CThumane.org 800-452-0114 Whether it’s providing resources so pets can keep their homes, or being a safe haven for critters with nowhere to turn, the Connecticut Humane Society (CHS) serves vulnerable pets across the state. Founded in 1881, CHS is the oldest and most comprehensive animal welfare organization in Connecticut. CHS has long focused on homeless pets, veterinary care and adoptions, but also has programs making it possible for pets to keep their families: the Pet Food Pantry, reduced-fee Fox Memorial Clinic, traveling wellness clinics, behavior assistance, and crisis foster homes. CHS is the leading resource in the state for companion animal welfare, enriching the lives of families and communities through adoption services, medical care, education, and prevention of cruelty. As an independent nonprofit located in Newington, Waterford and Westport, CHS receives no ongoing municipal funding and isn’t associated with national animal welfare groups. The pets rely on the generosity and support of donors. Sponsored by: The Bark Easy Grooming Salon

We are a foster based rescue, dedicated to the rescue of labs and lab friends who are homeless through no fault of their own and in danger of euthanasia. As a foster based rescue, we evaluate all of our dogs temperament and suitability for living with other dogs, cats, and children. Each dog’s health is evaluated and they are brought current on all vaccinations and are altered. We then place them in loving foster homes until they find their very own family. Our labs live in their foster homes until their perfect forever home is found. Our foster homes work with our dogs to determine temperament as well as the requirements for each specific dog so that we can place them in a home that will fit their needs. For the Love of Labs was created over 12 years ago and has rescued and rehabilitated thousands of dogs during that time. Sponsored by: New Fairfield Animal Hospital

I have adopted over 4,000 dogs in 15 years into homes all over New England, Canada and Nova Scotia. I have a number of local dogs fostering in Connecticut, mostly in my home, but the majority of my dogs are adopted sight unseen and are transported up to the Northeast every weekend from the South. Sometimes I get a private driver to deliver your precious cargo. The dogs are fully vetted on arrival and I consider all adoptions as Foster-to-Adopt. If the dog doesn’t work out, I will rehome them so you are never stranded with a dog that doesn’t work out. We were formed in 1975 to rescue abandoned, abused and stray cats and dogs. Today we are one of the oldest and most respected animal welfare organizations in the northeast. We currently have three primary goals. First, providing shelter and veterinary care to homeless animals until they can be matched with responsible owners. Second, reducing the number of stray animals through spaying and neutering at our POA SPAY! high-volume clinic. Third, increase community awareness and education regarding animal welfare topics including animal care and trap spay/neuter release programs (TNR).

89 Mill Road North Haven Ct 06473 203-239-2641 www.theanimalhavenct.org The Animal Haven is a private, not-for-profit animal shelter that has been providing refuge to homeless cats and dogs since 1948. The Animal Haven was established as a no-kill shelter, which it continues to be to this day. This means that we will not euthanize an animal, except when it is in the best interest of a sick or dying animal. The shelter is located in a beautiful, wooded area on a seven-acre parcel of land in North Haven, Connecticut. The Animal Haven’s first priority (in addition to taking in homeless animals) is to find them loving, permanent homes. The staff at The Animal Haven spend time with each animal to understand his or her personality and needs. This helps us to find a home that best suits each animal and to recommend a dog or cat that is the best fit for the person or family. Sponsored by: Pet Shield Veterinary Hospital

These sustained efforts yield one of the highest save rates nationally for a no-kill shelter. In 2020, we had an astounding 100% save rate. The Little Guild offers animal education programs and services for the community throughout the year, including free dog training classes and vaccination clinics. We are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit foster-based rescue in central Connecticut, whose mission is to save dogs at risk from municipal pounds/animal controls, from owner surrenders, and from unwanted litters. We are 100% volunteer-staffed and we rely on fosters to keep our dogs safe while we find them suitable forever homes, as we do not have a shelter or kennel facility. We do adoptions at monthly events and by appointment. We are 100% reliant on donations and fundraising to cover veterinary care and supplies.

Valley Shore Animal Welfare League (also known as ‘VSAWL’) was founded in 1972 by a group of women that saw an increasing need for animal-oriented programs along the shoreline of Connecticut. The League now owns and operates a no-kill shelter that serves as an adoption facility for dogs and cats. Our goal is to provide care and compassion while working to find animals their forever homes. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization operated by a Board of Directors. A caring, dedicated staff and number of volunteers handle the daily operations of the shelter. Our office hours are 11 - 5 Tuesday through Saturday, closed on Sunday and Monday.

WASA (Westport Animal Shelter Advocates) formed in 2007 to assist and advocate for homeless dogs in Connecticut. We fund the veterinary care for all dogs impounded at Westport Animal Control from routine exams and vaccinations to spays/neuters to life-saving surgeries. WASA is the official volunteer group for Westport Animal Control (WAC) and volunteers are on site every day to exercise and socialize the “guests” at Westport Animal Control as well as conduct meet and greets and home visits required for every adoption of a dog from WAC. Additionally, since our formation, we have developed a fostering network for dogs that come to WASA as owner surrenders from Connecticut pet owners or as rescue’s from Connecticut’s municipal shelters. With many organizations focusing on dogs being transported into Connecticut, WASA is dedicated to Connecticut dogs who so often are overlooked when an individual or family is looking to adopt a dog. When you design your garden and incorporate your dog’s needs with yours, you’ll have the perfect backyard heaven. Here are some ideas and tips for your yard: For an active dog, look into setting up an agility course. Having your own agility course will allow you and your dog to work together and build a stronger bond. It’s also a fun and exciting way to utilize the land in large yards.

If you have some land, think about adding a running path in the yard. A path that is created specifically for your dog to run and walk on can be fun for any dog. Why not put on your running shoes and jog a few laps with your dog. It will make the yard uniquely catered the needs for you and your dog. When creating walkways and paths, be sure to leave ample room of about a 3-foot wide area for your dog to follow through. Narrow paths may have your dog cutting through the flowerbeds. A solid paver is better for this than having loose gravel or mulch because dogs like to dig at loose material. Provide plenty of shade for your dog. By creating shade through planted trees, your dog can have a nice cool place to relax and get out of the sun. Get to know the plants in your yard. By knowing which plants in your yard are poisonous and which ones are not, you will be able to provide the proper information to your veterinarian should your dog decide to chew on a plant that happens to be 26 • Spring 2022 | Connecticut Dog

poisonous. Keep in mind, not all dogs chew on plants but by knowing this information it will help your dog get the proper medical attention if necessary. Go organic and limit the use of insecticides, herbicides, and pesticides. If chemicals are a must for your

yard then be sure to limit your dog’s contact with that area, especially the immediate days following the application. Also, be sure not to leave any chemical bottles laying around where your dog could accidently get into them.

If you’re thinking about adding a gate, find one that will keep your yard secure while allowing your dog to look out and see beyond the gate. Gates come in a variety of different styles, so find one that will enhance the theme or design of your yard.

Water gardens and swimming pools are fun, especially for those dogs that like to swim and splash in the water. It’s very important that those areas remain safe, secure and well maintained at all times. Dogs should never be left alone or able to access these water areas without constant supervision.

Keep a rock border, low fencing, ornamental grass or manicured bushes around your newly landscaped yard as a reminder for your dog to keep out of those areas. Add a doggie door going out to your fenced in yard. This will make easy access for your dog to the outside area. It’s good to regularly inspect and repair of any open areas around the perimeter of your fence where dogs can sneak through or under and escape. Spruce up your outdoor dining area with a feeding station for your dog by placing an elevated dish set that fits the size of your dog. There are so many designs and options available that will fit your personal style.

Dogs like having a place to call their own. By incorporating a dog house, you will be able to make a special retreat just for your dog. Have fun with it by adding a fresh coat of paint, placing an outdoor weather safe pet bed inside, hanging a personalized plaque with your dog’s name above the door, and laying down a welcome mat in front of the door. It’s cute and inviting. Grass not only looks great but it provides a cool, relaxing area for your dog to stretch out her muscles or a for a lazy day snooze. Spring 2022 | Connecticut Dog

DOG BREED

Old English Sheepdogs Article and image provided by New England Old English Sheepdog Rescue, Inc.

O

ld English Sheepdogs (OES) are best known for their comic antics and striking good looks. Known as the clowns of the dog world, these lovable furballs have been featured in many movies including the Shaggy DA and Please Don’t Eat the Daisies. But life is not always like the movies. Potential owners need to know what it’s really like to live with an OES 24/7. Our breed specific dog rescue group, New England Old English Sheepdog Rescue, Inc, (AKA NEOESR) loves to share information about living with an OES. Since OES are herding dogs, when a family member heads to another room, the OES will follow. OES are Velcro dogs extraordinaire. This characteristic drives some people crazy. OES fanciers find it endearing. NEOESR is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization serving all of New England. Our dogs are fostered in private homes. This allows our volunteers to evaluate the dog’s unique personality and quirks. Our volunteers take pride in matching dogs with the perfect furever home. NEOESR also helps dogs stay in their original homes. When a dog owner contacts the group about possibly giving up a dog because they are overwhelmed or have not connected with the right resources to help them with training or grooming, we provide guidance. We call these success stories “Sit. Stay. Hooray Rescues.” Our mission is to provide a rescue program for abandoned, mistreated or unwanted Old English Sheepdogs regardless of whether such animals are purebred or registered with the American Kennel Club. www.neoesr.org

A Prayer for Divine Mercy O greatly Merciful God, Infinite Goodness, today all mankind calls out from the abyss of its misery to Your mercy — to Your compassion, O God; and it is with its mighty voice of misery that it cries out. Gracious God, do not reject the prayer of this earth’s exiles! O Lord, Goodness beyond our understanding, who are acquainted with our misery through and through, and know that by our own power we cannot ascend to You, we implore You: anticipate us with Your grace and keep on increasing Your mercy in us, that we may faithfully do Your holy will all through our life and at death’s hour. Let the omnipotence of Your mercy shield us from the darts of our salvation’s enemies, that we may with confidence, as Your children, await Your final coming — that day known to You alone. And we expect to obtain everything promised us by Jesus in spite of all our wretchedness. For Jesus is our Hope: Through His merciful Heart as through an open gate we pass through to heaven (Diary of Saint Maria Faustina

Kowalska, 1570). Visit
