Hail Holy Queen Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Duchess is an incredibly sweet 5-year old girl weighing 60 pounds. Charles is 7-years old and about 60 pounds. They came to Pack Leaders Rescue together. They were both involved in an animal cruelty case in Arkansas that lasted two years. The mayor of the town fell in love with the both and took them in. They get along great with other dogs and do not have to be adopted together. They are housetrained and very well mannered. You will see from their vet records that they were very well cared for when they were with the mayor. After the two year cruelty case, both Duchess and Charles are now finally free to live in their forever home. They do not have any health issues, except Charles has allergies. Duchess and Charles are both heartworm negative, fully vetted, spayed/neutered and micro-chipped. This adorable pair can be adopted though Pack Leaders Rescue, www.packleadersrescue.com. is a 2-year old, 45 pound mix from Puerto Rico. She is shy and skittish with new people, so she will need a calm quiet home with people who are willing to be patient and earn her trust. Butter Pecan does well with other dogs and would benefit from having another dog in the home to help her come out of her shell. 2022 grooming guide
T
he annual Grooming Guide offers pet parents the ability to locate a qualified groomer to take their pets to. Over the next couple of pages you’ll be able to learn more about a few of Connecticut’s professional grooming salons and spas in your area. In addition to finding a groomer, you’ll want to establish a good relationship with your dog’s groomer. Below are four ways that you can help your dog when it comes to time for grooming.
4 Ways You Can Help Your Groomer 1. Offering your dog a proper diet and good nutrition helps your dog with his internal health and exterior appearance. Just like with humans, what we put inside of our bodies not only helps to keep our bodies functioning well and gives us good mental health but we end up looking as healthy as we feel and this applies to your dog, too. 2. Brush your dog’s teeth as much as possible in between visits to the groomer. A healthy mouth is a direct link to your pet’s overall physical health. 3. Establish a consistent grooming schedule for baths, cuts and everything in between. Just as you maintain your appearance by going to a hairstylist, your dog needs to have his fur or hair maintained as well. 4. Continue to make visits with the same professional groomer that you and your dog are most comfortable with because it is less stressful for your dog when he can build trust with the same groomer on a regular basis.

A Muddy Paw Pet Salon is a full-service dog grooming salon geared to the personalized attention of each dog that visits the salon. Your pet’s safety and comfort is our primary concern. HEALTH & W ELLN E S S
Written by: Ann Moureau
A
nxiety, transitions, illness, injury and grief can all be supported into healing with the ancient, gentle, and noninvasive energy modality, Reiki. Pronounced, ‘ray key’, this energy treatment can be experienced in two ways, hands-on and distant. Hands-on treatment is wonderfully soothing in it’s feeling of warmth and deep relaxation. Distant Reiki treatment also elicits feelings of deep relaxation and is utilized when an animal doesn’t want to be touched, is apprehensive of people, and is difficult to treat hands-on. The distance can be across the room or barn or as far away as another country. I treated many types of animals at a rescue ranch in the high desert of Southern California. A goat named Nibbles had arthritic joints and spent most of her time by herself, laying down to ease her pain. I treated Nibbles with Distant Reiki since she was apprehensive with being touched. I visited the ranch following two weeks of sending treatments. Nibbles greeted me at the gate, her little face looked up at me. She walked with me to a picnic table and was content to be standing while she socialized with me. I was amazed with her healing. Animals do not have an ego as humans do, so animals heal much faster than humans. Reiki supports physical health, emotional balance, mental clarity, healing of trauma, and recognition of one’s spirit self. A family black lab in his senior years was stressed and had difficulty walking due to his hips. Rudder welcomed hands-on Reiki. As he lay on one side resting his head on the floor, I sat near him resting my hands on his mid and low body. Feeling the warmth of Reiki flow through my hands into Rudder, twice he lifted his head to look at me, wanting to make sure it was okay to take a break from his duty of protecting his family. I answered telepathically, yes. He let go and relaxed into the flow of Reiki. His hip tightness eased and following treatment he was able to walk with less restriction. Animals are so tuned in that when receiving Reiki, they let me know what area of their body needs treatment by changing their position. They make sure the area that needs healing is close to me and my hands. I’ve never met an animal who doesn’t love Reiki. Reiki has been apart of my life for thirty years.

unning is a fantastic way to get fit and stay healthy. Although you may want to look and feel your best, it’s not always an easy task to get yourself up and going. Listening to music on your headphones is one way to get yourself motivated for your routine run. However, a better way to increase your motivation and drive is to run with a partner. Having a dependable partner to run along side of you during your daily training sessions has been known to increase your energy while encouraging you to run more often. When you run with a partner you will most likely exceed your personal goals and expectations and perform your best. Choosing a running partner lways run with your dog on a could be a difficult task because it’s not always leash. overall mental and physical health, you are able to have the best motivator running along side of you. Breeds that are best as running companions typically have high endurance and are obedient. Keep in mind that certain breeds are better for running long distance than others such as retrievers and border collies. Smaller dogs like the Chihuahua or Pomeranian are better suited for walking. Puppies younger than 18 months should stick to a short walk routine. Dogs older than ten years probably shouldn’t run. You should always check with your veterinarian if you are concerned about any current or pre-existing physical conditions that your dog may have before you start a running regime. Before you and your new running companion start out, think about the time of day, plan the route and terrain to run on and then consider the weather. The time that works best for you should be considered but typically it’s always best to run in either the early morning or at dusk when the temperature is cooler. Just as you protect your feet and body, think of how you can protect your dog’s paws and body. Depending on the elements, running sneakers for dogs, jackets for colder days, and paw balm that you can apply to soften your dog’s pads are available at many local pet stores. Regardless if you invest any products to help your dog, there are a few things that should be done after each and every run. For instance, you should always check and clean your dog’s pads after each session and if you notice that your dog’s pads are sore or bleeding, give your partner a few days off to heal and then slowly ease back into a running routine. Finally,
think about the temperature or weather conditions outside and how that can have an effect on both you and your partner. Some days are better spent not going out at all until the weather clears up. Also, when getting ready to run, don’t feed yourself or your dog within the hour before you run because it can cause stomach cramps and bloating. Then again, never head out without drinking water beforehand or without taking water with you. Its important for you both to stay hydrated. Many sporting stores have gadgets to make it easy to carry water so that you can run easier, while specialty dog boutiques have running packs and collapsible nylon dog bowls that your dog can carry on him while he runs. You will be responsible to carry enough water for two. You and your running partner should take frequent water breaks, preferably in shady areas, along your route. Warming up before a run is necessary. It’s best to take it easy and slow. Stretch your muscles so that you can slowly build up a tolerance for dis-

tance and speed before you both begin running long distance. Start off by walking and slowly increase the speed to a jog. Keep in mind that your dog will run as long as you do so it’s a good idea not to take your dog on any marathon distances because that would be too exhausting for your dog. Before you know it, you will be able to gradually increase your running distance over a period of time. As the old saying goes, slow and steady wins the race! While you are out on your run, it’s easy to know your physical needs or restrictions but since your dog can’t communicate their feelings with you, its important to keep your eye out for any physical characteristics that your partner may be displaying if in need of help. For instance, if your dog begins to foam at the mouth, has very heavy panting, appears weak, eyes that looked glazed over, or if your dog starts to limp, slow down, has an inability to stand, or completely stops in it’s tracks, then these are all signs that its time to take a break or stop all together. At this time you should cool your dog immediately by wetting him down with cold water and getting into an air-conditioned area. Overall, running is a fantastic way to stay fit and healthy but having a daily routine is important. Consistency over a period of time is imperative as it allows you both to adapt and grow into the activity. It may take time and patience to work into a solid running routine but once the regime has been established you will end up with the best running partner that you could have ever hoped for.

Moving your dog into a new home, whether it’s a puppy, an older dog, a newly adopted dog or your well-loved dog, the transitions are very similar. Most importantly, we want to make sure that “Fluffy” or “Buster” finds comfort, safety and fun. These are some tips to “dog proof” your home: 1. Trash cans should be out of reach and/or have secure lids. 2. Cords for blinds should be tied up and lifted a bit so that the dog can look out the window in order to avoid damage to the blinds. 3. Keep plants out of reach – they could be harmful and make a mess. 4. It’s important to designate a specific space for your dog. This could be an area for his/her bed or a crate. Crate training can help with house breaking the dog and it can keep him/her secure and safe. Some dog owners not only carve out a specific space in the home but in some cases, even have a separate room for the dog. 5. You want to make sure to keep dog toys that are appropriate for the size and temperament of the dog. Toys that are too small can cause choking, toys too soft will be chewed up and toys too big can be awkward. 6. Keep leashes, collars, food bowls and food close by and ready for use throughout the move.
moves much closer to the ground than people. Is there an easy entry/exit of the home? Is the yard secured and fenced? Where will the dog do his/her business? 9. If you have a specific area for “business” in the yard or dog run, try to avoid the yard from becoming a “minefield”. If you walk your dog instead, make sure that you have plenty of pick up bags with you, it’s easy to run out of them.
17. Reach out for help when things get tough. 18. Remember these three words: safety, training and fun. Welcome Home, Friend!
10. Establishing ground rules for all family members will be essential to keep control of the dog, eliminate frustrations, accidents and create comfort. A list of chores for everyone is a good idea as it’s a way to contribute to training. 11. Find training or re-training for your dog. 12. Invest in a good vacuum cleaner for carpeting and hardwood floors. Most dogs shed. 13. Keep medical records available and find a good veterinarian as well as a 24-hour emergency care center, just in case. 14. Think about which area would be best for bathing and cleaning the dog.
7. Keep clean up wipes, spot cleaners, paper towels and newspaper nearby for messes that can happen to any dog at the beginning.
15. A schedule, rules and a safe place will be important for any pet to enjoy their new home.
8. Think about the space of the home from the perspective of the dog who has four legs and

keep up the training, and give them a break when confusion, shyness or resistance show up. After all, everything is new!

Keep your Dog
Safe this Summer from the
Heat and Sun
The hot weather during the summer months can pose a threat on your dog’s overall health if certain safety procedures are not carried out. Here are a few tips to help make your dog comfortable on these hot and sunny days. - Never leave your dog in a vehicle on hot days. Generally the temperatures in a car can rise over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes, regardless if the windows are up or down. - If you keep your dogs outdoors all day, be sure to provide plenty of water. Dogs are known to accidentally knock over bowls and dishes so it’s a good idea to set up several drinking areas in your yard. Because water can get very hot as it sits in the sun, consider placing water bowls in shaded areas as well.

- Avoid any type of strenuous exercise on hot days. If you want to take your dog out for a routine walk, think about going early in the morning or later in evening when it’s not so hot outside. - Be sure that your dog has a shaded area to rest and relax if he’s kept outside. Dog houses tend to trap heat and therefore it would serve no purpose in keeping your dog cool enough. - The ground and pavement can get quite hot and can be harmful to your dog’s paws. Grass would provide an area for your dog to seek relief. - Invest in a small kiddie pool for your dog. Filling it up just a few inches can provide a place for your dog to cool off. Replace the water daily. - If you have a breed that is apt to get a sunburn or you have a dog with a new summer buzz, take the proper precautions before exposing your dog to the sun’s rays.

About Poodles: The Poodle is a very versatile breed in the fact that there are three sizes; Toy, Miniature and the largest being the Standard. There’s a size for everyone! Standards for young families, Miniatures for young and older people. The Toys are for people who don’t mind accidents because they are usually not reliable but will use pee pads, sometimes. Toys are great for apartments and older adults who don’t want to have to take dogs out frequently. Poodles are incredibly smart and it’s been said that they rank #2 in intelligence with Border Collies coming in #1. Sometimes this intelligence can be a little overwhelming if you don’t understand the Poodle’s brain. It becomes quite clear to us in Poodle rescue why a Poodle did not work in its original home. Most problems that occur is that the Poodle can and will at times become the pack leader if they feel that there isn’t a leader! Imagine? Poodles (and Bichon Frise) are considered to be the least allergy producing breed because they have hair. not fur. The difference is that hair will continue to grow and fur sheds. This requires grooming money and is something to consider if you are interested in a Poodle. So, in the end you either buy vacuum cleaner bags to vacuum up the fur or spend money at a grooming salon!
This Poodle was recently taken in by Poodle Rescue Connecticut. You can see from the images that this dog has not been groomed in two years! Grooming Poodles is not only about looking good, it’s about the health of the dog. Text and images provided by Poodle Rescue Connecticut. P.O. large number of returned pets from animal adoptions that took place at the start of covid-19. People are moving, going back to work, taking vacations, losing their jobs, suffering from either financial and/or medical hardships along with a variety of other reasons causing the uptick in returned dogs to shelters across our state. The combination of the many new dogs routinely coming into the shelters, along with the overwhelming animal surrenders, our local animal shelters and rescue organizations depend greatly on the generosity, love and support from volunteers, donators, and adopters. To bring awareness about this matter to our pet communities, this issue contains information about some of these animal shelters and rescue organizations. With thanks to the support of dog loving local business owners, Connecticut Dog has put together this editorial feature that will continue to be included in each issue of the magazine going forward where these and additional animal welfare facilities will be featured. CHS is the leading resource in the state for companion animal welfare, enriching the lives of families and communities through adoption services, medical care, education, and prevention of cruelty. As an independent nonprofit located in Newington, Waterford and Westport, CHS receives no ongoing municipal funding and isn’t associated with national animal welfare groups. POA is a nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter and rescue. We were formed in 1975 to rescue abandoned, abused and stray cats and dogs. Today we are one of the oldest and most respected animal welfare organizations in the northeast. We currently have three primary goals. First, providing shelter and veterinary care to homeless animals until they can be matched with responsible owners. Second, reducing the number of stray animals through spaying and neutering at our POA SPAY! high-volume clinic. Third, increase community awareness and education regarding animal welfare topics including animal care and trap spay/neuter release programs (TNR).
Reclaimed Dignity Animal Sanctuary endeavors to provide a safe haven for all animals in need, with particular attention to the abused, neglected, abandoned and misunderstood. Providing a safe haven, medical and behavioral care with the goal of finding forever homes. In the event that a home cannot be found, they will remain in our care; they will never again know abandonment. We are a registered 501c3 not-for-profit and donations are tax deductible! doptable dog sponsorship ads have become a partnership between Connecticut Dog and local businesses who want to help make a difference for homeless animals. Difficult to place dogs, those that are having trouble getting adopted and senior dogs are the ones that are the focus on the following adoption pages.
By no fault of their own, there are various reasons why some dogs do not get adopted or spend too many years in a shelter or foster situation. It could be that they are overlooked in the shelter, they moved around a lot or have bounced from one foster home to another, they have special needs and require a lot of attention and/or financial needs, they have endured some sort of trauma, they are of a specific breed that nobody wants or they are older, senior pets. These dogs have a lot of love to share and in exchange they all desperately need someone to love them, too. Some have certain restrictions and just need a special kind of person or family to care for them. Could that be you? The following pages will show a variety of wonderful dogs that are in immediate need to find a loving forever home with the right family. If you’ve ever thought about adding another furry family member to your family or if you would be a first time pet owner, please take the time to look through the following pages and read about each one of these available and adoptable pets. If you find one that you like and you think that you would want to know more about that dog, we encourage you to reach out to the rescue or shelter for more information about the pet, adoption application and adoption fees. When you adopt, you save a life. When you save a life, it becomes a rewarding experience. Together we can help change the life of a dog in need. So, if you are an animal lover, a business owner or if you have a rescue organization or work for a city shelter and you would like to be a part of the Connecticut Dog’s Sponsor an Adoptable Dog program, please visit www.ConnecticutDog.com to reach out for more information.
