re you and your canine friend looking for a change in your regular dog-walk routine this summer? How about making a splash with a leisurely lakeside picnic, or go boating with your dog on a clear afternoon, and enjoy the cool ocean breeze with a little help from my friends at Freedom Boat Club, who are very dogfriendly.

I do wish Connecticut had more beach rights for dogs, but we can create our own backyard oasis for our pets. On those hot days with the sun beating down on your dog, the Kurgo Core Cooling Vest will help keep your pet many degrees cooler. Simply wet it with cool water, wring it out, and strap it on, and get instant relief! Also, instead of having your dog lay on the hard ground, invest in a “Cool Bed” made by K&H Pet Products. It will keep your dog cool and comfortable laying on a cushioning water bed, it’s especially great…if your yard doesn’t have many shade trees, but don’t forget to pick up the old time standard, a small kid’s pool for your furry friends, as well. Try to enjoy a blissful summer with your best friend. The best way to do this is to eliminate any stress. If you are always worried about your dog running away…fence in your yard. Cape Cod Fence or Fence One, are two great dog-friendly companies that has our, “paw stamp” of approval. Then reach out to Patio & Hearth, and let them transform your backyard into your own paradise… all that’s left to do is relax! Whether you are on a dock, deck, patio or porch, invite your friends over (and even their dogs) serve some icy drinks and fire up the grill!! Have a tail wagging summer!

RUMOR, HAS IT!

Freedom

Boat Club

names new boat after oil spill survivor By Lisa Almeida

A female German shepherd named Rumor, won “Best in Show” for The Herding Group at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, held in Manhattan, New York on February 13, 2017. Rumor, whose official name is Lockenhaus’ Rumor Has It V Kenlyn, is the first German shepherd to take the crown since 1987. Now that she is retired for good her owner and handler, Kent Boyles told reporters after Rumer’s victory. What’s in her future? “Babies, I hope, and perhaps her favorite treat…a rib-eye-steak,” he said! 10 • May-June 2017 | Connecticut Dog

Freedom Boat Club named a boat named Buddy Boy, who was injured in the 2010 BP oil spill. A Florida Freedom Boat Club franchise named a boat in honor of a golden retriever that nearly died in the aftermath of the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Buddy Boy barely survived after taking an “unauthorized swim” in the Gulf and being exposed to the powerful solvent that was used to break up the oil. “This dog is special. He shares my love for water and boats, as well as for people. Everyone who meets him quickly falls in love with him,” Lisa Almeida, owner of the Freedom Boat Club Jacksonville and St. Augustine franchise, said in a statement. Almeida and members of her staff will christen a new 20-foot Hurricane deckboat on April 15 at the Southeast U.S. Boat Show in Jacksonville. Buddy Boy’s Toy is the 44th boat in the fleet. “I have never owned a dog, but after getting to know Buddy Boy, who belongs to my fiancé, Riley, I have a new perspective,” Almeida said.

Unlike a fluffy dog bed that is designed to retain heat to keep a dog warm, the Cool Bed III™ is designed to radiate heat back into the air or the floor surface to keep a dog cool. The water-saturated Cool Core™ inside the Cool Bed III™ absorbs the dog’s natural body temperature of 102°F and coverts it to room temperature, which is normally well below the dog’s body temperature. The difference created between the room temperature and the dog’s body temperature is how the Cool Bed III™ provides a cooler, refreshing surface for your dog. Recommended for indoor and outdoor use • No electricity required • Unique Cool Core diverts liquid for ultimate cooling power • New exterior surface is tougher than ever • Available in 3 sizes • 2 year warranty

dog de stin ation s

s a pet friendly resort, The Springs Resort and Spa offers a getaway of relaxation and rejuvenation without the added expense of finding an overnight kennel for your dog. Located just an hour north of the New Mexican border, along the banks of the San Juan River in the heart of the picturesque southern Rockies, time away with your four-legged friend doesn’t mean that you have to go too far away. Pagosa Spring is rich in history. Native American tribes discovered the therapeutic and healing powers of the Pagosa Hot Spring. The word “Pagosa” is derived from the native term “Pag Osah,” which translates to “healing waters.” Back in 1859, a white man came to discover the ancient springs for himself and that brought about and cultivated the idea that the natural waters would help those who seek to find healing for any sort of physical ailments that they may have. This was the beginning by which the mineral baths and the spa movement became recognized worldwide. The Pagosa Spring is the largest and deepest hot spring in the world with 23 soaking pools to ravish yourself in. The spring is approximately 45 feet in diameter and as for the depth, that is still yet to be discovered! The water temperature from the mother spring is about 144 degrees Fahrenheit, however, the 23 soaking pools vary in temperature from 84 degrees Fahrenheit to 114 degrees Fahrenheit. Some of the minerals found in these natural healing waters include sodium, potassium, magnesium, silica, chloride, fluoride, arsenic, boron, iron, lithium, manganese, zinc, and sulfate. These minerals provide the many different facets that provide healing energy to your body. Aside from soaking endlessly in the hot springs, the area provides many activites to keep you quite busy, from river rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, hot-air ballooning, railroad rides, skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. However, your best friend will want to burn some energy by exercising alongside of you when you go fishing, backpacking, hiking, camping, or snow shoeing. On your way back to your room, before you retire for the night, take your dog for a stroll around the premises to see if you can follow the footprints that Homer, the hotel dog, left behind on the cemented walkways. The Springs Resort and Spa is a luxurious and comfortable getaway popular among families and Baby-Boomers. The amenities are quite lovely— providing thick mattresses, fine linens, and most importantly, the ever so soft plush robes that you would wear when on your way to soak in the therapeutic hot spring mineral pools. If requested, the resort will also provide customized and personal service for special events, anniversaries, or holidays. Without much effort, the helpful and friendly staff will always remember who you are. Instead of feeling like a vistor, you begin to feel more like you are at your home away from home. You can’t help but feel good about your stay at The Springs Resort and Spa because the new facility is considered to be amongst the most “greenbuilt,” sustainable hotels in America! Not only is the Springs Resort and Spa the first LEED-built hotel in the state of Colorado, it is one of only 14 in the entire nation! The building has been designed to take advantage of abundant natural light and geothermal heating techniques to reduce energy consumption. Both the existing 50-room hotel and the new facility are geothermal heated using a unique exchange process powered by hot water from the natural spring. There are also many other enviromental benefits of staying at a resort that is LEED-certified that have you feeling good about your travels. However, before you leave to go back home, be sure to go shopping for clothing and organic skin care lines at the spa. Then set some time aside to completely unwind with a facial, body wrap, or massage that is customized for you. Once you visit The Springs Resort and Spa, you’ll find yourself making plans to revisit year after year. Dog Safety for

Boating By Vanessa Allison Reed

Photo by: Love & Light Photographs

A

s the warm weather approaches, we are all getting excited for boating season. Whether you like power boats, sail boats, kayaks, canoes, or SUPs, many people consider taking their dog along for the ride. This is the time to get your pooch acclimated for summer boating events. While we typically think all dogs must love the water, not all do, or some take more time to warm up to the idea than others, so a little bit of training and practice goes a long way! “Your pet might not know much about boating, so you have to get them ready,” says Lisa Almeida from Freedom Boat Club. Lisa has been boating with dogs for over 35 years, is dubbed the boatanista, and writes an online Facebook blog and regularly posts YouTube videos so that others can learn about power boating with dogs. She recommends easing them into the idea of boating. “Take them down to the dock on a leash and with a life vest on in case they fall in. The floating dock can be wobbly, so get them stable and comfortable. Once you get them on the boat, you can take the leash off. Go for a short ride and see how they do. Pull away and come right back. See if they are restless. Do baby steps.” If you are thinking of taking your dog out on something smaller, like a canoe, kayak, or SUP, you can start right in your back yard by getting them in and out of the boat suggests Gerald Payfer who is a longtime dog owner and trainer, and Assistant Manager at Eastern Mountain Sports in Waterford, CT where they carry life vests for dogs, as well as other supplies. “Start on land and get them used to wearing a life jacket. Some dogs will acclimate faster than others. Many people make the mistake of deciding to bring the dog along without any training ahead of time. Make it a positive experience for them.” Continued next page

“Jessie” owner and member, Jonathan Duncklee Gerald says that one of his dogs loved the water, while another took years to warm up to it. “We had a dog that, even as a puppy, was scared of the water. You might need to build up their confidence. Be patient. Depending on the training and comfort of the dog, maybe do this over the course of a few days to a week. Some dogs may get comfortable quickly, and others could take months.” And if you are canoeing, one suggestion Gerald makes is to teach the dog where to lie down in the boat to maintain the boat’s center of balance. Also consider what type of equipment you might need. Many companies make life vests for dogs such as Ruffwear, Solquist and NRS. These vests usually have a handle to make it easier to get the dog out of the water. “If the dog gets excited and goes after a seagull, you want to have a plan to get her back in the boat,” suggests Richard Cromwell, the coowner of the Freedom Boat Clubs of CT. Lisa often recommends a ladder for the back of a bigger power boat called ‘paws aboard’. Here is a link to her showing how she trained her dog, Buddy Boy, to get back on the boat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gcLuF3yDjQ

On the day of boating, consider the conditions before you even go out on the water. What is the day like? Will you need sunscreen or protective gear for the dog? Do you have fresh water and a bowl for the dog to drink from? “Dogs will drink the salt water and can get diarrhea, so give them fresh water before they even go in, and then get them to drink right after. I carried treats to give to Buddy Boy right after swimming to make him drink fresh water,” says Lisa. Also consider clipping your dog’s nails before going out on the boat.

“We had a dog that, even as a puppy, was scared of the water. You might need to build up their confidence.” In warm weather,

watch out for exhaustion and heat stroke recommends Dr. Rebecca Hall, a veterinarian who’s brother is an avid sail boater. “Dogs don’t cool off the same as humans. Watch for signs of excessive panting, red eyes, hotter than normal ears and overall weakness. Get them out of the sun and cool them down slowly so as not to shock their system.” In cold weather, watch out for hypothermia. “If you are doing cold weather paddling, you can get a neoprene vest for the dog,” says Gerald. “If a dog is in colder water too long, they can get something

called ‘limp tail’ where the cold water shocks the nerves. Have a towel handy to dry off the dog and keep them warm if needed. Also consider taking a pet first aid class in your local area.” If you are going out for a longer cruise like an overnight, you might also want to consider training your dog to go to the bathroom on a mat. Train them at home ahead of time to use piddle pads or a dog potty mat for the boat with a removable tray that you can clean. So, here’s to having a great time boating with your dog! Prepare and train for the type of boating you are doing. Have the right equipment and gear for the day and event. And keep your dog safe and enthusiastic. See you on the water.

Dogs & Ki d s

What Is

Small Dog Syndrome

M

ost small dogs develop what is called “small dog syndrome.” Small dog syndrome (SDS) is when your dog becomes very yappy, snappy, destructive, possessive, and demanding. For example, you may notice any of these things when taking a walk and your dog demands to be carried, or when you get home and find the sofa is ripped open. So why did these changes start? It is because the owner allows for it to happen. Usually if a big dog jumps up on someone’s lap, they would tell the dog to get off. But if a small dog jumps up, it’s ok. Every time you give in to these little behaviors, it deprives them of being normal and having the same socialization as other dogs. These behaviors are telling them that they’re in charge. So how can you fix these problems? You can start by not tolerating their bad behavior! Treat them just as you would for a larger dog and don’t be afraid to tell your dog “no” when she does something she’s not supposed to do. Make sure she earns her privileges, and you will start seeing a better behaved dog.

Dogs & Kids Editor Amelia Mae Roberts Amelia is the writer and editor of the Dogs & Kids section for both Connecticut Dog and High Desert Dog, a regional dog magazine and directory located in the Southwest.

7. Rutabaga- Ususally an overlooked vegetable, rutabega is great for dogs.To cook this for your dog, boil the rutabega, mash it up and mix with a little bit of olive oil.

There are so many fruits and vegetables that are great for dogs. Here are just a few that we think your dog will go crazy for. Talk to your veterinarian if you have questions about whether or not a particular fruit or vegetable is good for your dog.

Vegetables

8. Sweet Potato- This veggie is not only delicious but it’s loaded with vitamins and minerals. Bake the sweet potato so it’s soft in the center. Cut up the sweet potato, skins included, and mix with olive oil.

1.Pumpkin- A perfect treat for Fall, pumpkin can help your dog’s digestive system. Bake your pumpkin and scoop out the pulp inside and serve with olive oil. Another option would be to buy canned pumpkin as long as it doesn’t have any added sugar. Your dogs will love it!

10. Spinach- Another nice green leafy vegetable to incorporate into your dog’s diet is spinach. Simply boil or steam spinach, chop it up and serve with olive oil.

2. Asparagus- Just like your green leafy vegeatables, asparagus spear stalks have chlorophyll, too. Chop finely and serve alone or with food.

Fruits 3. Brocolli- This vegetable is great in moderation. Your dog can eat all parts of the broccoli such as the stem, leaves, and tops. As a daytime snack, quarter the broccoli stems lengthwise and give raw.

1. Blueberries- This fruit is extrememly good for your dog but it may take some time for your dog to get used to having blueberries as part of their diet. You can serve the blueberry whole or mashed up andmixed into kibble.

4. Apples- Apples are a crunchy treat for your dog. In fact, apples have been known to help protect against cancer. Please beware that when serving apples to your dog, be sure you cut up the apple and remove the core. The apple seeds over time can make your dog sick.

2. Cantaloupe- A favorite for many dogs is the delicious fruit called cantaloupe. Cut open the cantaloupe, remove the outter skin and seeds then slice up and serve into bite size bits.

5. Banana- Not a favorite for all dogs, but some dogs really dig bananas. If you peel the banana, some dogs will eat it like most people do. Otherwise, try mashing up the banana and mix it with some kibble.

3. Watermelon- Dogs usually love watermelon. Be sure to give it in moderation. Be sure to use a seedless watermelon when sharing it with your dog.

ENGLISH SPRINGER

T

he English Spaniel is a medium sized dog that was developed as a “gun dog” to flush, or spring out game in fields, but they turned out to be much more. This tail wagging breed is just a lot of fun to take along when you go hiking, camping, and even swimming, because they are cheerful, playful and athletic…not to mention: smart, driven, and they do everything with gusto. They may, or may not bark when strangers approach your house, but most likely, they will indeed snuggle up with you or your children on the couch…always looking for affection, and giving wet kisses!

ate is a really sweet mix breed dog. She loves to play in the snow and she had her first meeting with a boy dog last week....she did really great!

i My name is Opie and I am about 2 years old. I can be shy at first, but I can explain a little about why that may be. I was abandoned at Stop and Shop in Branford. It was cold outside and I was afraid. I ended up at the shelter where I was even more confused.
