Created in Holland – horsehair weaving Marianne Kemp – A collaboration with John Boyd Textiles has come to a collection of exquisite, contemporary woven horsehair fabrics, which has been made into a range of lampshades.

These shades create such interesting and beautiful effect with light. Ranging from a wavy effect to a plain check, available in different natural colours, black and brown.

オランダの伝説 – 同性結婚 – 2001年世界で初めてオランダ は同性同士の結婚を正式に認 める国になった。同性愛者の 権利の表現の一つとして、毎夏 ゲイプライドという船のパレー ドがアムステルダムの運河で 行われる。

LEGALISED in Holland – Gay marriage – In 2001, Holland was the first country in the world to officially acknowledge marriage between two persons of the same sex. As a manifestation of gay rights, every summer the Gay Pride boat parade is held on the channels of Amsterdam.

Created in Holland – SENZ Umbrellas BV Gerwin Hoogendoorn & Philip Hess – The aerodynamic shape and patented construction make the SENZ umbrella windproof up to 70 MPH and it does not invert. It is an honour to make a presentation of Dutch design in Japan, as we both have a strong belief in the power of design and the way it adds a meaning to our surroundings.

– Half a year ago, still recovering from the Salone in Milan, Premsela approached Tuttobene to assist them in organising Created in Holland, with the intention that we would take over the project in future years. A beautiful task, but for us with a moral dilemma; how can we integrate our sustainable criteria in this project, that was initiated with different goals? Due to time shortage we had to find different ways to keep our focus. And yet, it is a great opportunity to make a difference; Rome wasn’t built in a day.

– Japan and the Netherlands established a unique relation over more than four centuries, influencing each other’s cultures in arts and crafts. For example the shape, function and decoration in both Japanese and Dutch ceramics were exchanged; both countries produced and exported; an early sign of globalisation.

Throughout the magazine you find various articles and columns that focus on the topic of this unique relation.

– Because the bond between our countries is exceptional we decided not to suffice with a small catalogue. Instead we asked various writers to think about the similarities and differences between the Dutch and Japanese design processes. They had various interviews with design professionals that made an interesting picture come clear. Within the great differences in our approaches to design, there lies a great opportunity. That is why we feel that Japanese and Dutch designers might be exceptionally complementary to each other! Marion Pennink, from the Dutch Embassy in Tokyo, writes in her column: “In Japan, design starts in the detail and works towards the big picture, in the Netherlands it is the other way round” (see page 23). This might be an important reason why the Netherlands and Japan have been attracted by each other for such a long time already.

– This magazine is also an invitation to Japanese design professionals to come and visit the Dutch landscape of design. In collaboration with the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions (NBTC), we added a visual report listing the best and newest places of interest, underground nightlife and sustainable hot spots that we believe are the most interesting for the true believers in Design.

デザインのパワーとその影響力を強く信じている我々は、今回ダッ チデザインを日本に紹介する機会を得て光栄に思う。 半年前ミラノ・サローネの余韻の残る中、ダッチデザイン＆ファッショ ン協会プレムセラからトゥットベーネはオランダブースCreated in Hollandの運営を依頼された。今後も視野に入れてのことだ。素晴 しい仕事だと思ったが、我々のサステイナビリティ重視の姿勢を目 的が異なるこのイベントにどう生かしていくか、というジレンマが あった。限られた時間で我々の目的を達成するのにいつもと違う 手段を見つけなくてはならなかったが、これは新たな方法を見つけ る良い機会だった。ローマは一日して成らず、である。 日本とオランダは400年以上もの間、アートや工芸などの文化を通 じて互いに影響し合ってきた。例えば、陶磁器の形、用途、デザイ ンの面で日本とオランダは交流してきた。両国とも陶磁器の生産 国であり輸出国であり、当初から国際化を目指していたのである。 この冊子では両国の関係についても紹介している。 両国の絆は特別なものなのでこの冊子だけで語りつくすことはで きない。代わりに日蘭のデザインプロセスの同異点について様々な 人に書いてもらうことにした。デザインの専門家とインタービュー を通じて相違点が明確になってきた。デザインへのアプローチの 違いの中に素晴らしい可能性を発見するのである。日本人とオラン ダ人のデザイナーは相互に補完する関係にある、と感じるのだ。東 京のオランダ大使館のマリオン・ペニンクは「日本では、デザイン は細かい部分から全体へと作業が進められていくが、オランダで はその反対である。」 （本文12ページ）と書いている。これが日本と オランダが長年にわたって魅かれあっている大きな理由なのかも しれない。 この冊子を手に取った日本のデザインの専門家である皆さんが、 実際にオランダを訪問しダッチデザインの源流を見てもらえれば 幸いである。この冊子では、オランダ政府観光局との協力により、 デザイン好きにぴったりの最新スポットやナイトライフ、サステイナ ブルな人気スポットも併せて紹介している。

Amsterdam - Ask ten Dutch experts on design what Dutch design is, and you’ll be likely to get ten different answers. ‘Dutch design is down to earth and humorous’, says Rob Huisman on behalf of the Professional Association of Dutch Designers (BNO). ‘It’s renewing and not so dead-serious’, says designer Michel Doyer.

‘You’ll recognise Dutch design by particular choices and combinations of materials’, says Victor Le Noble from Tuttobene, a Dutch platform that tries to boost sustainable design. Designer Gerwin Hoogendoorn finally, describes it as ‘simple, innovative and purely functional’.

– How hard it apparently – even for Dutch designers themselves – is to pinpoint the essence of Dutch design, and how different the various definitions they provide us with might be, large groups of people all over the world think much of Dutch design for a couple of decades already.

– In 1994 already Douglas Coupland, author of the world-famous bestseller Generation X wrote the following on the work of Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas in the art supplement of the New York Times. ‘As a Dutchman, imprinted with his country’s role as an international trading center, he has fewer problems with global change than might someone of another nationality.

The Dutch, a nation of traders, have not surprisingly spawned an architect whose work responds to the silent, nanosecond transnational flows of money and ideas.’

– With that observation Coupland not only interpreted the success of Koolhaas’ work in – amongst others – the United States, by linking this success directly to Koolhaas’ descent, he also – though probably unintentionally – made good advertisement for Holland.

– Exactly with that idea in mind – the idea that Dutch design makes good publicity for Holland in foreign countries – the Netherlands will be represented by a dozen of Dutch designers at 100% Design Tokyo. This exhibition takes place as part of the Tokyo Designers Week, that will be held for the 23rd time this year from the 30th of October until the 3rd of November.

– Seen the goals of the Dutch in Japan, it’s not surprisingly that the Agency for International Business and Cooperation (EVD) is one of the leading, financial parties behind their attendance at 100% Design Tokyo. One of the main objectives of the EVD, as can be read at the website of this agency of the Dutch ministry of Economic Affairs, is to help create a positive image of Holland in foreign countries. ‘Selling’ Holland is also the main reason to contribute to the Dutch presence in Tokyo for the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions (NBTC), says Charel van Dam on behalf of the organisation. ‘Our main goal in Tokyo is to promote Holland as a design country’.

– For the NBTC that promotion is particularly aimed at making Japanese want to visit Holland. ‘Next to traditional Japanese

アムステルダム－ダッチデザインとは何かと10人のオランダ人専門 家に聞いてみれば、おそらく10の異なる答えが出てくるだろう。 「ダッチデザインとは、現実的でユーモラス」とオランダデザイ ナーズ協会のロブ・ハウスマンは言い、 「再生的で、それほどシリ アスではない。」とデザイナーのミシェル・ドーイエルは言う。トゥ ットベーネのビクトール・レノーブルは「ダッチデザインは素材の 選び方と組み合わせが特徴的なのでわかる」と、そして最後に、デ ザイナーのヘルウィン・ホーヘンドールンは「シンプル、革新的、そ してとても実用的」と表現する。 オランダ人デザイナーにとってさえダッチデザインの本質を正確に 表すのは難しく、それぞれの定義は異なっているように見える。そ れでも、世界の多くの人々が、この数十年もの間、ダッチデザインを 評価してきている。 既に1994年、 「ジェネレーションX」の著者で世界的ベストセラー 作家であるダグラス・クープランドは、オランダ人建築家レム・コー ルハースについて、ニューヨーク・タイムズ紙のアート版に次のよう に書いている。 「オランダ人には、自分の国の役割は国際貿易セン ターだという概念が刷り込まれているので、他国の人ほど世界的な 変化を問題とは感じていない。意外にも、貿易の国オランダは、音 もなく瞬時に国境を駆け巡る金とアイディアの流れを汲んだ作品 を作る建築家を輩出してきていないのだ。 このクープランドの分析は、コールハースの出自を直接成功に結び つけることによって世界での、特にアメリカでのコールハースの成 功を分析しているだけでなく、おそらく無意識のうちに、オランダ という国を宣伝してくれたのである。 ダッチデザインでオランダの宣伝をする、というこの考えはまさに、 100%デザイン東京に出展するオランダ人デザインナーたちにも言 えることかもしれない。このイベントは、東京デザイナーズウィーク の一環として行われ、23回目の今年は10月30日から11月3日まで開 催される。 日本でオランダが目指していることを考えると、100％デザイン東京 へ オランダ人デザイナー参 加の背景に、オランダ外 国 貿易庁 （EVD）が財政的面も含めて、大きくかかわっているのは不思議で はない。オランダ経済省のウェブサイトにもあるように、オランダ 外国貿易庁の目的の一つは、オランダに対して良いイメージを持っ てもらうことだからだ。さらに、オランダを「宣伝すること」を主目 的にし、東京でオランダの存在アピールに貢献しているオランダ政 府観光局（NBTC）のシャレル・ファンダムは言う。 「我々の東京での 大きな目的はデザインの国としてのオランダをプロモーションする ことである。」 オランダ政府観光局は、特に、より多くの日本人にオランダへ行っ てもらえるようにプロモーション活動を行っている。 「昔からのオ ランダへの日本人旅行者は、グループで旅行しオランダの伝統的な イメージであるキンデルダイクの風車やキューケンホフ公園のチュ ーリップを見に行く人々だ。だが、そういった旅行者とともに、個人 で旅行する20代、30代の日本人が増えてきている。この世代と昔 ながらの日本人旅行者との大きな違いは、若者はチューリップと風

車だけを見に行っているのではないということだ」とファンダムは 言う。 特に日本では、いわゆる都市の若い旅行者はデザインに大きな関 心を持つ人が多い。 「日本人はデザイン・フリーク」ファンダムは語 る。 「さらにダッチデザインは日本で有名。様々なメディアによっ て、オランダやオランダ人デザイナーについてはよく知られてい る。」 100%デザイン東京で傘を出展するセンズ・アンブレラのデザイ ナーの一人、ヘルウィン・ホーヘンドールンは、ファンダムの言葉を こう裏付ける。 「オランダで有名なテレビ番組『カルロとイレーネ』 に出演した時は傘について5分間笑われたけど、日本で出演した 2つの朝のテレビ番組では、司会者は傘のデザインをわかりやすく 説明してくれた。オランダがどこにあるかを説明するアニメーショ ンまで流した番組もあったくらいだ。日本人にとっては、これはと ても大事なことだったんだ。デザインに関しては、日本では『メイ ド・イン・ホランド（オランダ産）』というのは、品質の証なのだ。」 100％デザイン東京に参加するオランダ人デザイナーたちは、自分 たちのデザインとともに、オランダという国もプロモーションするこ とになるわけだが、デザインしている最中は、彼らにダッチデザイ ンを作ろうという意識はほとんどないという。 「私がデザインをす る時に最初に考えるのは機能性」とセンズ・アンブレラのデザイ ナー、ヘルウィン・ホーヘンドールンは言う。 「世界中の人々が感じ ていたフラストレーションをうちの傘が解決したのは、偶然ではな いんだ」とデ・カストのデザイナー、ミシェル・ドーイエルもこれを 裏付けて言う。 「他の国の人が、私のデザインをいかにもオランダ らしいというかもしれないけれど、自分自身はオランダらしいかど うかなんて全く気にしていない。」しかし、ドーイエルこそ、自分が オランダ人であることが、国際的には有利だ、ということに気がつ いた最初の人だ。 馬毛を編み上げた素材を100％デザイン東京に出展するマリアネ・ ケンプも、マーケティング的にはオランダ人であることに利点を感 じているが、 「ダッチデザインという快適なネームバリュー」を使う 危険性を強調する。 「自分に甘くならないように気をつけなくては いけないわ」彼女は警告する。 「ここ数年『ダッチデザイン』という ラベルは『自動的にマーケティングしてくれるツール』のようになっ てきている。デザイナーとしてそのラベルの周りに自分のデザイン を群がらせていると、もはや自分の作品の背景を説明する必要が なくなってしまう。私は自分で話をする方が好きだから、自分の作 品をダッチデザインと積極的にラベル付けするつもりはないわ。最 終的にはお客さんは、ダッチデザインだからではなく、私の作品が 好きだから買ってくれるのだもの。」 このケンプの最後の発言には、オランダデザイナーズ協会のロブ・ ハウスマンも同意見だ。オランダは優れたデザインの国だが（彼に よれば「面積あたりのデザイナーの数はオランダが世界一」）多く のデザイナーはあまりに簡単に「ダッチデザイン」のラベルを利用 しすぎていると彼は感じている。 「彼らは、自分の作品は他国では 『ダッチデザインとして見られるから』売れるはずと思っている」彼 は言う。実際と理論は全く別のことだというのは、ハウスマンが言

tourists who visit the Netherlands in groups and who are interested especially in traditional Dutch icons as the windmills in Kinderdijk and the tulips in The Keukenhof, there’s a growing group of Japanese people in their twenties and thirties, who are interested in visiting Holland on their owns.’ But there’s one big difference with the more traditional tourists from Japan, says Van Dam. ‘These people aren’t just interested in tulips and windmills’.

– But especially in Japan, these so-called young urban travelers are very interested in design, knows Van Dam. ‘Japanese are design-mad’, he says. ‘And Dutch design is really well known in Japan. Thanks to various media they’re really familiar with Holland and its designers’.

– Gerwin Hoogendoorn, one of the designers of Senz Umbrellas, that will present his umbrella at the exhibition in Tokyo, confirms the image drawn by Van Dam. ‘When we were on television in Holland on the show of Carlo and Irene (two famous Dutch tv-hosts), we tittered about the umbrella for five minutes.

At the two breakfast shows we attended in Japan, the hosts comprehensively gave attention to the design of the umbrella and in one case they even showed an animation to show the viewers where Holland is situated. For Japanese people these are extremely important issues. As far as it concerns design the qualification ‘Made in Holland’ is seen as an indicator of quality in Japan.’

– Although the Dutch designers at 100% Design Tokyo, next to their own designs, will also promote Holland, they emphasise that during the process of designing they scarcely give thought to the fact that they’re making Dutch Design. ‘For me, designing in the first place is about functionality’, says Gerwin Hoogendoorn from Senz Umbrellas. ‘It’s not a coincidence that our umbrella constitutes a solution for a frustration people recognise worldwide’. Michel Doyer, designer of De Kast, likes to endorse that image. ‘It’s very well possible that foreigners mark my designs as typically Dutch, but for me it’s not an issue whether it’s typically Dutch or not’. But Doyer is the first one to recognise that his being a Dutchman, internationallyprobably is more of an advantage than a disadvantage.

– Although she also sees the benefits of being Dutch as a designer from a marketing point of view, Marianne Kemp, who will show here weavings of horsehair at the exhibition in Tokyo, emphasises that even dangers can be found in using the ‘comfortable qualification Dutch design’. ‘You have to take care you don’t make it too easy for yourself’, she warns. ‘The label ‘Dutch design’ in the last few years has become a kind of ‘automatic marketing-tool’. Actively clustering your designs around that label as a designer, means there’s no necessity anymore for you to tell the story behind your work. Especially because I prefer telling my story, I’m not trying actively to label my work as Dutch design. In the end, customers buy your work because they like it, not because it’s Dutch.’

‘They just assume that they will sell their work in foreign countries, because it’s Dutch.’

– Rob Huisman

Rob Huisman of BNO very much agrees on that last remark of Kemp. While stating that Holland pre-eminently is a design country in his view (‘nowhere in the world live as much designers per square meter as in Holland’), he also feels that lots of Dutch designers too easily make use of the ‘Dutch design’label. ‘They just assume that they will sell their work in foreign countries, because it’s Dutch’, he says. That practice and theory are two different things show the figures Huisman spouts.

‘Dutch designers make eight percent of their earnings outside of Holland. The only problem is: that never changes. It was the case when we started with organising exhibitions like this years ago and it’s still the case. Dutch designers should more enthusiastically promote themselves’.

– So there’s work to be done for the Dutch designers in Tokyo. The image of Holland won’t be influenced positively by the designers emphasising their descent. It will do much more for the image of Holland if they promote themselves. Good thing is: that’s exactly what they’re there for.

“It seems, you have to leave to find out where you are really coming from.” In the Netherlands, this phrase could have perfectly been read from a traditional ‘sayings-tile’ hanging from a nail in the toilet. It could also have been something that a wise Buddhist monk told you while visiting a Japanese temple for spiritual guidance. This is not the case though.

– In fact, it is Dutchman Laurens van den Acker, sharing with me the story of his journey to become the General Manager of the Design Division of the Mazda Motor Corporation. Van den Acker graduated in 1990 at the Industrial Design Department of Delft University of Technology and since has worked for Volvo, Audi and Ford, where he became chief designer. For him, he says, it has been more than a privilege to now work in a third different continent. “It doesn’t just give me the work experience, but also life experience”, he explains. “I come from the southern part of The Netherlands. When I moved to the north of Holland, I discovered that I really came from the south. When I moved to Italy, I found out that I was Dutch. Then, through Germany I arrived in America and found out that I was European. And now I moved from a western culture to an eastern culture and I am finding out that I am really western. You find out a lot about your culture when you are moving away from your comfort zone.”

– As Van Den Acker immediately left Holland after his graduation, he never really felt part of the Dutch design scene. However, there are some typical traits that he thinks come in handy for any Dutch designer or manager working abroad. “We communicate easily, are pretty straight-forward, tolerant and still, quite democratic. We understand the necessity to build a consensus and are not very authoritarian in doing so.”

– Even though it is known that in Asian cultures building a consensus is of the greatest importance, the Dutch way of reaching a consensus is not necessarily similar or helpful in a Japanese company. Van den Acker explains that this has to do with the fact that in a Japanese culture, the team is more important than you are as an individual. The team speaks with ‘one voice’ as they call it in Japan.

– This difference with western cultures also influences the design process in an important way. “In a western culture, somebody has an idea, then you’ll have a meeting with the team, and finally show it to the boss, and the boss will say ‘great, we’re gonna do this’. Ironically, in a western culture, you are still very reliant upon the boss to make the decision. Then you will go through a really swirly road towards the goal, as the boss will probably tell you lots of things to change or adjust. In a Japanese or eastern culture process, you have an idea, you have a meeting, and before you decide to even speak to the boss, you speak to everybody. You ask everybody his or her opinion and build consensus that way. That process takes a lot of time, which often drives

「自分が本当はどこからやってきたのか知るためには、そこから 立ち去ってみなければならないかもしれない」この言葉は、オラ ンダでは昔からトイレの「ことわざタイル」に書かれていて誰もが 目にするものである。日本では、説法を聞きにお寺を訪ねた時、 僧侶が言う言葉かも知れない。しかし、そうではないのである。 実際に、オランダ人ローレンス・ファン・デン・アッカーはマツダのデ ザイン本部長になるまでの次のような話をしてくれた。ファン・デン・ アッカーは1990年にデルフト工科大学の産業デザイン学科を卒業 後、ボルボ、アウディ、フォードでチーフデザイナーを務めた。彼に よれば、3番目の異なる大陸で働くのは素晴らしいことだった。 「仕 事だけでなく、人生の経験が豊かになるんだ」と彼は説明する。 「僕はオランダ南部に生まれた。オランダ北部に引っ越した時、自 分は南部出身の人間なんだと改めて思ったよ。イタリアへ引っ越し た時には、自分はオランダ人だと実感した。それからドイツを経て アメリカへ移った時は、自分はヨーロッパ人だと、そして今度西洋 から東洋へやってきて、自分は西洋人なのだということを改めて思 った。自分が快適に暮らしている世界から抜け出した時に自分の 国の文化を再発見するものなんだね。」 ファン・デン・アッカーは卒業してすぐオランダを後にしたので、彼 自身はオランダのデザイン・シーンを肌で感じたことはない。しか しながら、海外で働くオランダ人のデザイナーやマネジャーにはい くつかの典型的な特徴があるという。 「オランダ人は気軽に人とコ ミュニケーションをとり、はっきりと物を言い、寛容でありながら民 主的。同意を得ることの必要性は分かっているけれども、そうする ために権威主義は振りかざさない。」 アジアの文化でもコンセンサスを得ることは重要視されているが、 オランダ人のコンセンサスを得るアプローチとは必ずしも似ていな いし、日本の会社ではあまり役に立たない。日本では一個人として の自分よりチームの方が重要である、ということにも関係するのか もしれない、とファン・デン・アッカーは説明する。チームは日本で 言うところの「一枚岩」として発言するのだ。 この西洋文化との違いは、デザインのプロセスにおいても大きな 意味を持つ。 「西洋社会では、いいアイディアが浮かぶとチームで話 し合い、最終的にボスに見せる。そしてボスは『いいね。これで行こ う。』と言うだろう。皮肉にも、西洋社会では、決定を下す際、発案 者はボスに対してずっと依存する存在なんだ。それから、ボスはお そらくいろいろと変更や修正を言ってきて、発案者はゴールにたど り着くまでに紆余曲折を経て長い道のりをいくことになる。日本な ど東洋の社会では、アイディアが浮かんだら、ミーティングを開い て、ボスに話すか決める前にみんなに話すことになる。全員の意見 を聞いて、同意を得て行くんだ。このプロセスは非常に時間がかか るので、西洋人には耐えられなくなることがよくある。だけど、ボス が決定を下すミーティングにまで一度漕ぎつけたら、チーム全体が 受け入れていることがわかれば、ボスがそこで『ノー』というのは非 常に難しい。そこまで来たら、ゴールへの道はまっすぐで短いもの になる。」 日本のビジネスで最も重要なのはブランドとチームであるとわかっ たことで、ファン・デン・アッカーはマツダの新しいデザイン・フィロ

「私が驚いたのは、それらの 多くは自然のイメージなの に、車のスケッチは今も昔と 同じことだ。」

新しいデザイン・フィロソフィーは2006年に導入され、ロサンゼルス のモーターショーでNAGARE（ながれ）コンセプトカーが発表され た。NAGARE（ながれ）とは「流れ」。特に、ファン・デン・アッカー と彼のデザイナーたちは車を作る時の動きと自然環境に与える影 響を研究した。 「デザインチームと何か新しいものを生み出したか った。でも、我々が意図するところが伝わるようにしなくてはいけ ない。我々が意図することの一つはいわゆる『emotion of motion （モーションのエモーション）』だ。私はチームに言った。モーショ ン（動き）というものを、全く新しい今までとは違った方法で表現 する必要がある。デザイナーたちの机の上にあるもの、プレゼンテ ーションで使ったイメージ、インスピレーションを得るために壁に 貼られたイメージ画を見た時私が驚いたのは、それらの多くは自然 のイメージなのに、車のスケッチは今も昔と同じだったことだっ た。そこで私は言った。 「みんな、もしこういうものが好きならばそ れを車に取り入れなくちゃいけない。こういった自然のラインを車 のボディーラインの中にも見たいんだ。」そうしたら彼らは「本気 ですか？」と私を見た。 「もちろん！」と私は言ったよ。 NAGARE（ながれ）のデザイン・フィロソフィーは、デザイナーにとっ てだけでなく、ファン・デン・アッカーがこのコンセプトを説明した 相手すべてにとって、自然に感じられるものだった。 「オフィスであ る人と話をしていたら、通りがかった別の人がグラスファイバーで できたモデルをちらっと見た。すると彼は立ち止ってモデルに近づ き、膝をついてサイドボディーを触っていった。彼が見たものを信 じるには感じる必要があったんだね。そこで、僕は思った。我々の 車を文字通り触る人が出てくるところまで来たんだと。」 NAGARE（ながれ）のパワーは、自然が普遍の概念であるように、 誰にでも訴えかけ、美観よりさらに深いところで人を惹きつけるこ とだ、ファン・デン・アッカーは説明を続ける。 「NAGARE（ながれ） を単なるサイドボディーのテクスチャーだと考えていたら、長続き はしない。NAGARE（ながれ）をデザイン・フィロソフィーとしてとら え、サイドボディーやヘッドライト、インテリア、ステッチや素材、ク ロスの選択といった細部にまで取り入れていって初めて、世代を超 えたデザイン・フィロソフィーになっていく可能性がある。もし NAGARE（ながれ）を真の心のあり方だと考えられるならば、数世

western people crazy. But, once you then come to the meeting where the decision needs to be taken with the boss, he will see that the whole team is on board and it will be very hard for him to say no. And then the road to the goal is straight and short.”

– The observation that the brand and the team are the most important in a Japanese business helped Van den Acker tremendously in his first big assignment: creating a new design philosophy for Mazda. Before he did anything, he asked everybody if they wanted to make a big step or a small step. Everybody immediately said they wanted to make a big step. This opened important doors for Van den Acker. “If you can indicate that what you are planning to do in terms of design is the right thing to do, then management is very willing to support you all the way. If you do it because you want to impress your friends, you’re off track”, he states.

“And what striked me was that a lot of what they had was nature, but they were still sketching the same old cars.”

– The new design philosophy was introduced in 2006 with the launch of the Nagare concept car at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Its name ‘Nagare’ translates into English as ‘flow’ and Van den Acker and his designers specifically studied motion and the effect it has on natural surroundings when creating this vehicle.

“I wanted to create something new with the design team. But make it really communicate what we stand for, and one of the things that we stand for is the ‘emotion of motion’ as we call it.

I said to the team, I need something that expresses motion in a completely new and different way. I looked at what the designers had on the desks, the images that the guys displayed in their presentations, the inspirational images that they had up on the walls. And what striked me was that a lot of what they had was nature, but they were still sketching the same old cars. I said ‘guys, if this is what you like then I need to see it in the car. So, if you see those lines of nature, I want to see those lines in the bodylines of the car.’ And they were looking at me like, ‘are you serious?’ I said ‘yeah!’”

– The Nagare design philosophy did not only feel natural to the designers, but also to everybody that Van den Acker showed the concepts to. “I had somebody in the office that I was talking to, and somebody else dropped by and saw the fibreglass model out of the corner of his eyes. He stopped, walked towards the model, set on his knees and touched the body side. He had to feel what he was seeing to believe it. Then I thought, now we have something, when we have people literally touch our cars.”

– The power of Nagare is that it seems to appeal to everybody, as nature is such a universal concept, and it goes a lot deeper than just aesthetic appeal, as Van den Acker continues to explain.

“If we treat Nagare as just a couple of textures on a body side, then it won’t live a long live. If we treat it as a design philosophy that we are starting to apply to body side surfaces, the details in the head lights, the interior, the choosing of the stitches, the materials, the textures, then it has the chance to become a design philosophy that can live for a generation or so. If we treat it as a true state of mind, then it has the chance to live with us for multiple generations. It will be up to us to get there, and of course, this is my goal.” It all seems to feel natural to Van den Acker, who puts his own emotion in motion to make cars that feel natural to all of us.

Designs on Japan Design has a long tradition in Japan – the country of stunning traditional craftsmanship. The Netherlands have a long tradition in Japan too; for over two centuries it was the only country allowed to trade with Japan. Pottery shaped and decorated in the Netherlands found its way to Japanese collectors; one tea-ceremony school was so taken with this pottery that it clandestinely ordered, in the 17th and 18th centuries, stoneware pots, through the Dutch East India company, that are still used by the Kobori Enshu * tea school today.

– Contemporary Dutch design has a much shorter history in Japan; short, but fast. Since the introduction of legendary Droog in Japan in 2000, the star of Dutch design has been rapidly rising.

It has gained a reputation for being conceptual, playful and surprising - yet functional and practical. Two other aspects that have captured the imagination of Japanese design circles, are the social orientation and environmental consciousness – such as recycled design products.

– “Play” is an aspect of culture where the Netherlands and Japan connect: the famous book on this topic “Homo Ludens” by Dutch scholar Johan Huizinga, has been translated into Japanese and is widely known and applied in academic circles; very recently, the gaming industries of both countries have found each other and have started what will hopefully become a close and creative cooperation.

– In June of this year, a specially dedicated Droog Design shop was opened in Tokyo; and in October, the first food designer from the Netherlands will have a presentation in Tokyo, demonstrating to Japan, where playing with food is strictly forbidden, how to play with the concept of food and eating in a social setting.

– Another point in common is the role of design in both countries.

Both Japan and the Netherlands are known for their propensity to stylise and shape their environment to a high degree: this is immediately evident in even the most simple Japanese shops, classical interiors, gardens, art and architecture. In the Netherlands, traveling by car through the landscape or flying over it, it is as if the whole country has been modeled by one and the same careful hand. In Japan, design starts in the detail and works towards the big picture, in the Netherlands it is the other way round.

– With design playing such a larger-than-life role in both societies, it seems only a matter of time until Dutch Design will take its firm place in the Japanese design world. I hope that many of you will enjoy its creativity during Tokyo Designers’ week 2008. * Kobori Enshu:

日本をデザイン 見事な伝統的職人芸が息づく国日本にはデザインの長い歴史があ る。オランダもまた日本との長い歴史がある。オランダは200年以 上もの間日本が交易を許可した唯一の西洋の国だった。オランダ で作られ装飾された陶器は日本の収集家の手に渡り、これを非常 に気に入った茶道家が東インド会社を通じて密かに注文した。 この17、18世紀の壺は現在も小堀遠州流*の茶道で使われてい る。 現代のダッチデザインと日本の歴史はもっと短いものであるが、 急速に発展している。伝説的なドローフ・デザインは、2000年に日 本にやってきてからというもの急成長を遂げ、コンセプチュアル で、遊び心があって、人々を驚かせるようなところがありながらも、 機能的で実用的との評判を得ている。その他に二つ、日本のデザ イン界の心をつかんだものは、リサイクルされたデザイン・プロダ クトといった、社会性と環境への配慮だろう。 「遊び心」は、オランダと日本を結んでいる部分だ。オランダ人学 者ヨハン・ホイシンガが書いたこのテーマに関する有名な著書「ホ モ・ルーデンス」は、日本語にも翻訳されて広く知られているばか りでなく、学界でも取り上げられている。つい最近では、両国のゲー ム業界が交流し、クリエイティブな分野で密接な協力関係を築く ことが期待されている。 今年の6月、東京にドローフ・デザインの専門店がオープンした。 10月には、オランダのフードデザイナーが初めて東京でプレゼン テーションを行なう。食べ物をもてあそぶことが厳しく禁じられて いる日本で、食べ物のコンセプトや会食の場での遊び方をデモン ストレーションするのである。 オランダと日本のもう一つの共通点はデザインの果たす役割だ。 両国とも高いレベルで環境をコントロールすることで知られてい る。これは日本のごくシンプルなお店や、伝統的なインテリア、庭、 アート、そして建築を見てもすぐに理解できることだ。オランダは 車で走ったり空から眺めてみたりすると国全体が一つの手によっ て注意深く作られたように見える。日本ではデザインは細かい部 分から全体へと作業が進められていくが、オランダではその反対 である。 どちらの国でもデザインが大きな役割を果たしている中で、日本 のデザイン界にダッチデザインが確固たる地位を築くのも時間の 問題かもしれない。東京デザイナーズウィーク2008で多くの方が ダッチデザインのクリエイティビティを楽しんでいただけるよう願 っている。 * 小堀遠州：

As much as Dutch Design travels the world, nothing says Dutch Design as much as Holland itself. It is the best place to experience its full scope and will enable you to better understand why Dutch Design is so very much Dutch.

– Arriving in Holland will already give you the impression creation is an important factor in The Netherlands. From the sky you can see even the country has been designed, from reclaimed land to meticulously planned urban areas. At Amsterdam Airport Schiphol award-winning signage will lead the way past quirky art & design.

– Amsterdam feels more like a “cosmopolitan village” than a capital city. This city, which attracts so many creators from around the world, has a long tradition of harboring many people from different races, cultures and religions. Many modern and eccentric Dutch design can be seen set in a city full of history and heritage from past golden ages. In theory these opposites don’t seem to mix well, but in Amsterdam they seamlessly form a string of Dutch Design highlights dating back to the 13th century.

– KNSM Island, NDSM wharf, Westergas area, South Axis and Westerdok are all redeveloped areas offering innovative design and a creative impulse to various parts of the city. Shops like Droog@home, Frozen Fountain and Wonderwood offer an abundance of Dutch design items to take back home.

– Although Amsterdam is undeniably the established centre of Dutch design, other Dutch cities boast a wealth of design treasures, from hotels, to shops to clubs. Rotterdam can pride itself in having some of the most daring architecture in Holland, while Utrecht’s medieval features provide a perfect backdrop for Miffy’s Dick Bruna House and the Rietveld Schroder House.

Eindhoven is home to the visionary Design Academy and the affiliated Designhuis and Maastricht is becoming the bohemian hub of the country with design hotels and art fairs.

– In Holland, there are about 8,000 museums throughout the country. The most well-known museums to Japanese are the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Mauritshuis in Den Haag, famous for its 17 Century Dutch Old Master’s collection like Rembrandt and Vermeer. Also famous are the Van Gogh collections at the Van Gogh Museum and the Kröller-Müller Museum, one hour east of Amsterdam. As of July 2009 Amsterdam will house Hermitage Amsterdam, satellite museum of the world famous Saint Petersburg Hermitage.

アムステルダム・スケッチ 鷲尾菜穂子は100% Design TokyoのオランダブースCreated in HollandのマッチメイキングおよびＰＲコンサルタントとしてダッチデザイ ンを日本マーケットに紹介。アムステルダムにも何度も足を運んでい る。 デザインも街も人もディープな魅力に溢れているアムステルダム。毎 回訪れる度に新しい発見があるこの街で日本人の私が「オランダら しい！」と感じたいくつかの事をご紹介したいと思います。 自転車： オランダでは自転車は一人一台持っていると言われておりアムステル ダムも大量の自転車が行きかっています。 「デザイン大国」らしく、自 分のライフスタイルに合わせてカスタマイズされたものや日本では珍 しいデザインもあってバラエティー豊か！例えばバックフィッツ（箱付 自転車）に子供たちやペット時にはソファなど家具を乗せてすいすい 走っていたり。おもしろデコレーションや、時には屋根やベンチ付き も見かけます。ちなみに私のお気に入りサイクリングスポットは、中央 駅から東、アイ湾東部の新開発エリア*でのモダン建築巡り。旧市街 とは全く違った景色を楽しめます。また南のローカル達が憩うフォン デル公園内もリラックス・サイクリングには最適です。 オフィスランチ： オランダのオフィスでのランチは社長も含めスタッフ全員オフィスで 取るのが主流。しかもよく皆で一緒にキッチンで作るとか。私が訪れ たデザインスタジオやメーカーもどこも大体ランチ用キッチンとテー ブルがありました。手作りといってもオランダのランチはシンプルで 簡単。一斤パンを人数分切り分け、冷蔵庫からジャム、チーズにハ ム、きゅうりなんかを取り出してお皿に盛って出来上がり。各自パン にはさんでコップ一杯なみなみ注がれた濃厚ミルクでぐっと流し込む というのが定番メニューのようです。社長からバイトくんまで分け隔 てなくワイワイとリラックスムードでテーブルを囲む姿は役職や年功 序列など一切関係ない徹底した平等主義のオランダらしい光景とい えます。 リノベーション： オランダの人達はリサイクルだけでなくリノベーションも上手！アムス テルダムにも以前の用途とは全く違う形で再利用されている*古い建 物が沢山あります。例えばかつては刑務所や学校の校舎として使用 されていた建物が今はエクゼクティブ達が集うシックなレストランや デザインホテルに華麗に変身。また政府もNDSM埠頭（元巨大造船 所）やVolkskrantgebouw（元新聞社）をアーティストやデザイナー達 のスタジオにしたりかつての赤線地区「飾り窓地帯」の空き部屋＝窓 をファッションデザイナーのショーウィンドーとして提供する等、独創 的なアイデアで、積極的に行っています。過去と現在のギャップを想 像しながら市内に散らばるリノベーション・スポットを巡ってみるのも お勧めです。

Amsterdam sketch Nahoko Washio, matchmaker and pr-consultant for Created in Holland visited Amsterdam many times in the last years. With a Japanese eye she shares her experiences that characterise Amsterdam: Amsterdam is full of unique attractions, design, and people.

Every time I visit Amsterdam, I find something new. Here I would like to introduce to you the things that I have found to be “typical Dutch” – Bicycles It is said that the Dutch own at least one bicycle per person. In Amsterdam, you will see many bicycles running up and down.

In Holland, a “country of design”, bicycles are rich in variations.

Some are customised to make it fit to the user’s lifestyle, or others are with unique designs which we do not find in Japan. You may see a bakfiets (box bike) swiftly cycling with children, pets or sometimes even with furniture like a sofa, or you may find unique bicycles with interesting decoration, with a roof or with a bench.

– My favorite cycling route is the one starting from Amsterdam Central Station going east to the newly developed Oosterdok area by Het IJ. The landscape is completely different from the old city centre. For a relaxed ride it is nice to cycle in the Vondelpark in the South of the centre, where local people get together.

– Lunch at office It is common in Holland that all the people of a company, including the director, have lunch at the office. More surprisingly, they cook it in the kitchen in the office. At most of the design studios I have visited, there is a kitchen and a table for lunch. Cooking lunch does not mean something spectacular. It is usually simple, containing slices of bread with cheese, ham, cucumbers from the fridge, piled on plates. Mostly people make a sandwich themselves, and consume it over a glass of thick milk. Such relaxing and cheerful lunch with everybody, including president and part-timers, may show something typically Dutch; equalitarian without caring about neither title nor seniority.

– Renovation The Dutch are not only good recycling, but also renovating! In Amsterdam, there are many old buildings which are re-used with new purposes*. For instance, buildings that used to be a jail or a school changed fabulously into a chic restaurant or design hotel where executives get together. The city of Amsterdam is actively working on unique renovating projects; redeveloping the NDSMwarf (a former shipyard) and the Volkskrantgebouw (old building that used to house a newspaper) into studios for artists and designers, and the formal rooms and windows of “the red light district” where prostitutes used to work, into presentation windows of fashion designers. Visit such various regenerated areas in the City, and ponder over differences between the past and the present.

(previous page) Scheepstimmermanstraat Amsterdam – The Scheepstimmermanstraat (Shipwright Street; ex-ship docks island) was redeveloped in the nineties. This street shows a beautiful example of contemporary urban planning resulting in challenging design and a socially well-structured neighbourhood evoking the ambience of the traditional Amsterdam Jordaan quarter. People were allowed to have their house built in accordance with their own taste, within a few given restrictions.

They could employ their own architect to build their dream house.

Design Academy EINDHOVEN – In 2003 New York Times mentioned the academy as “without question, currently the best design academy in the world”.

The academy describes their vision as follows ‘With its conceptual and projectoriented approach to industrial design education, students are encouraged to think for themselves and to act responsively. That Eindhoven functions as the cradle of Dutch design is getting more and more obvious. NDSM Wharf Amsterdam – Student housing at NDSM wharf. On the former NDSM-wharf, an industrial area, now transformed into a new-media park with upcoming events and creative companies, these 380 living-cabins have temporarily been placed for students. Each box has its own services like a kitchen, bathroom, toilet, tv-connection and internet, measuring 24 m 2. The students have a larger communal space for parties or gatherings. Another shared facility is the wash space, to do the laundry, and a container for garbage.

Rotterdam Kunsthal ROTTERDAM – Rotterdam is famous for its architecture and the port which is the second largest in the world. The city is modern and full of surprising buildings, and many famous architects’ offices are located in this city.

Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam – The Van Gogh Museum consists of two buildings: the main structure designed by Gerrit Rietveld and opened in 1973, and the Exhibition Wing by Kisho Kurokawa completed in 1999. For the new wing of the Van Gogh Museum he created a sober design that accords perfectly with the existing building. Rational (Western) geometry forms a symbiosis with Eastern asymmetry. Kurokawa’s building is truly exceptional in the Netherlands. This is primarily because of its remarkable design, but also because of the extremely advanced materials used.

Dick Bruna House UTRECHT – Dick Bruna (1927) is one of the few living Dutch artists to have achieved worldwide fame among young and old.

He started drawing in 1940 and among the books he illustrated was the series entitled Zwarte Beertjes (Little Black Bears). The work of Dick Bruna is distinguished by its simple and direct draughtsmanship. Not only has Bruna made more than a hundred picture books, he has also designed more than two thousand book covers, over one hundred posters, postcards and prints. The Dick Bruna Huis is part of the Centraal Museum in Utrecht and comprises more than 1,200 works.

Boijmans van Beuningen ROTTERDAM – Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has world-class collections of old masters, modern and contemporary art, applied arts and design. Very recently the museum renovated the entrance area, accommodating the new museum shop and media café as well as the reception facilities. This public plaza provides space for the art-historical library, a brand-new print room and storage space. Jurgen Bey designed the museum’s educational centre, Bertjan Pot designed the museum shop, and the new espresso bar is designed by Simon Heijdens. Furthermore Studio Wieki Somers, Ted Noten, Frank Bruggeman, Simon Heijdens have worked independently on different elements of the entrance.

Kruisherenhotel MAASTRICHT – Situated in the centre of Maastricht is the former Kruisheren cloister, dating from the fifteenth century. Together with the monumental gothic church, this complex has been transformed into a very special designer hotel. The internationally renowned interior designer Henk Vos has created the interior. The beautiful pieces of light installation artwork is created by the German light installation artist Ingo Maurer. Throughout the complex, use has been made of the notable designs of masters such as Le Corbusier and Rietveld as well as modern designers like Marc Newson, Piet Hein Eek, Philippe Starck and Roderick Vos. These designs form exciting contrasts with the stained glass windows and the stunning, authentic wall and ceiling paintings.

Boekwinkel Selexyz Domincanen MAASTRICHT – Erected inside a former 800 year old Dominican church, this bookstore holds the largest stock of books in English in Maastricht, one of the oldest cities in the country.

It was always going to be a challenging task for Amsterdam based architects Merkx + Girod who designed the space, to stay true to the original character and charm of the church, whilst also achieving a desirable amount of commercial space. Taking advantage of the massive ceiling, both have been achieved through the construction of a multi-storey steel structure which houses the majority of the books. This is one giant bookshelf, with stairs and elevators taking shoppers and visitors alike, up to the heavens (mind the pun), to the roof of the church.

Lloyd Hotel Amsterdam – The official name of this hotel is The Lloyd Hotel & The Cultural Embassy.

As the name describes, it is not only a hotel, but also a meeting place for various nationalities and races. The rooms also varies from one star (80 euro - ) to five star (300 euro - ). The interior is a collaboration of Inneke Hans, Richard Hutten, Atlier van Lieshout, Hella Jongerius, Christine Meinderstma. The building itself dates back to 1921 and still the atmosphere remains. Many Dutch Design furniture is used inside the hotel and is like a showcase of Dutch design.

Sustainable Dance Club ROTTERDAM – The Sustainable Dance Club incorporates innovations in the field of sustainable design and applied techniques with social responsibilities in attractive club surroundings. No more counter culturists and moralizing attitudes but sustainability as a positive, young and profitable alternative for a broad target group. The Sustainable Dance Floor will generate electricity from the movements of dancing people. Over a cup of tea, Dutch architect and editor Femke Bijlsma and Japanese architect Yushi Uehara explore the common grounds and differences – in relation to design between Holland and Japan. A conversation about the power of humor and the media, the art of presentation, concepts, polder landscape and Mottainai.

– Nine times the size of the Netherlands and out rating Holland in population to almost the same extent, the Dutch appreciation and fascination for the Japanese culture, and design in specific, seems much easier to understand than the other way around.

Exploring the under laying traits of both cultures in a sincere quest for unraveling what comprises the strong bond between the two nations was an adventure Japanese architect and academic Yushi Uehara and Dutch architect and editor Femke Bijlma took with enthusiasm.

– Onderwater: Yushi, you moved here from Japan in ’89.

What surprised you about Holland?

Uehara: In respect to architecture, I’d say the radicality. I moved here when Rem Koolhaas was just getting known. I looked in amazement how he made extreme decisions in creating something totally new. Just sweeping the details and historic framework off the table! Drastic acts like that, also later adopted by the likes of MVRDV, would be impossible in Japan. Japan is much more traditional.

O: But the weirdest, craziest buildings come from Japan.

U: That’s esthetics. On the surface, Japanese design is very dynamic. It follows the trends set by the media. But Japanese architects would never waste the ‘seeds’ that may grow something entirely new. In my practice, I now try to choose a single path and use all possibilities within it to the most – the latter reflecting the Japanese eye for detail and subtlety. I recently designed an ‘origami’ bridge for cyclists where construction and experience being one; the eye-catching folded steelwork is on the underside, which becomes visible when it opens.

Bijlsma: Trends are also much more vigorous and powerful than in the Netherlands. The media plays a big role in Japanese society. And trends change much faster. When we had a choice out of five mobile phones here in Holland, in Japan I could choose out of thirty different designs in one shop only. With applications I could never have dreamed of.

O: How come?

B: I think because Japanese just love gadgets. They embrace the new, whereas the Dutch tend to be more conservative.

U: The laugh also is very important in Japanese culture. Dentsu, a giant advertising agency, essentially sells the laugh. It takes away the struggle and frustration of the stressful daily life filled with long hours at work and commuting, small housing, etc.

In short, it’s about selling image whereas in Holland it’s about concepts. The Dutch are extremely good in drawing a straight clean line.

B: Maybe that’s why Droog design does so well in Japan. They communicate a clear message with humor. If someone asks me what to bring to Japan I always tell him Dutch design. It’s the

オンデルヴァーテル：上原さんは1989年に日本からオランダへ移 ってきましたね。オランダの何に一番驚きましたか？ 上原：建築についていえば、ラディカルなところでしょうか。ちょう ど僕がここへやって来た頃、レム・コールハースが有名になりだしま したが、彼が全く新しいものを極端に大胆な発想で作るのを見て 驚かされました。ディテールや歴史的な枠組みを取っ払っていた！ そんな思いきったことは、後にMVRDVなんかも取り入れたことです が、日本では不可能でしょう。日本はもっと伝統に忠実です。 オ：でも、もっと変わった不思議な日本発の建物もありますよね。 上：それは美観の問題です。表面的には、日本のデザインはとても ダイナミック。メディアが作りだしたトレンドに乗ります。しかし、全 く新しいものが育っていく可能性のある「種」を日本の建築家は 絶対に無駄にしない。実は今私は、一つの選択肢の中でそれを最 大限生かしていくことを試みています。これはディテールや繊細さ を大事にする日本らしさを反映しています。最近では、建築と経験 が一つになった、自転車に乗る人のための「折り紙」の橋をデザイ ンしました。下には目を引く折り畳まれた鋼鉄製の橋があり、開く と見えるようになるのです。 ベルスマ：（日本の）トレンドはオランダのものより活気があってパ ワフルですね。日本社会ではメディアは大きな役割を果たしていま す。そしてトレンドはもっと素早く移り変わっていく。オランダでは 携帯電話は5種類くらいですが、日本では1つの店舗に行けば30の 違ったデザインの携帯電話があって、私が思ってもみなかった機能 が付いています。 オ：それはどうしてでしょうか？ ベ：日本人が目新しく気のきいたものが大好きだからだと思いま す。日本人は新しい物が好き、オランダ人の方が保守的な傾向にあ ります。 上：また、笑いも日本文化では重要なのです。大手広告代理店の電 通は本来、笑いを売っています。長時間の勤務や通勤、狭い家など の日常生活のストレスや葛藤を忘れさせてくれますからね。つまり、 日本ではイメージを売り込み、オランダではコンセプトを大切にす る、というわけです。オランダ人はストレートにはっきりと伝えるの が本当に得意ですね。 ベ：それでドローフデザインは日本で成功したのかもしれません。 ドローフははっきりとしたメッセージをユーモアを交えて伝えます。 日本に何を持って行ったらいいかと聞かれると、私はいつもダッチ デザインと答えます。それこそ、日本人にうけるものなのです。ダッ チデザインは、分かりやすく、人を思わず微笑ませるから、日本で

Yushi Uehara – Japanese Yushi Uehara is an Amsterdam-based architect who lives and works in the Netherlands since 1989. He runs his own studio, Zerodegree Architecture, researches current Chinese Urbanization at the Berlage Institute, writes on architecture and has worked with Rem Koolhaas, Toyo Ito and Kazuyo Sejima.

日本人上原雄史はアムステル ダム在住の建築家で、1989年 よりオランダにて活動。ゼロ・ ディグリー・アーキテクチャー を運営し、ベルラーヘ・インス ティテュートにて現代中国の都 市化について研究するほか、 建築についての著書もある。レ ム・コールハース、伊東豊雄、 妹島和世らと仕事をした経験 を持つ。

賞賛されているのでしょう。 上：日本人は目で、オランダ人は心で見ますね。 べ：私がオランダのアイントホーフェン・デザインアカデミーで教え ていた時には、 「そのアイディアはオリジナルか」といったようなコ ンセプトについて話をしました。とても頭を使います。東京で学生 と仕事をした時には、アイディアは問題ではありませんでした。そ の代わり、どう作ってどう見えるかがすべてだったのです。 上：日本人はダッチデザインを見たとき、何がそのデザインに欠け ていてどんな特徴があるのかということを瞬時に見抜きます。この 点は、双方の文化が互いに補い合える部分なのでしょう。 オ：オランダではサステイナブル（持続可能）なデザインが大きな 話題となっています。日本ではどうですか？ 上：主流のテーマではありませんね。それよりもメディアの方が大 きなトレンドです。 ベ：オランダ人は質素倹約で有名ですが、日本人も同じです。広告 の紙を折って入れ物やバッグにしていますよね。これは、本来の価 値を十分に使いきらずに捨ててしまうことへの残念な気持ち、もっ たいない精神を反映しているのでしょう。

B: I taught at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, where we talked about the concept: is the idea original? Very cerebral.

When I worked with students in Tokyo, the ‘idea’ was never a subject. Instead, it was all about create and look.

U: When a Japanese sees a Dutch design, he immediately catches what the design lacks or spots new features. In that respect, our cultures are complementary.

O: Sustainable design is a big issue in Holland. How is that in Japan?

U: It’s not a mainstream theme. Media is a bigger trend than sustainability.

B: There is such thing as frugality, what the Dutch are famous for, in Japan as well. Advertisements are folded in baskets and bags. It reflects the Mottainai* spirit, a sense of regret to throw matter away when the intrinsic value is not properly used.

オ：なぜこの精神がもっとデザインに表れてこないのでしょうか？ ベ：サステイナイナビリティに対する態度の違いだと思います。も のがあまりに美しければ、人は捨てないでそれを愛しむようになり ます。妹島さんが以前話してくれたのですが、彼女の建物はいわゆ る環境基準は満たしていないかもしれないけれど、建物の中の人 は季節を感じ、光を見ている、彼女のデザインを通じて、人々は自 然とつながるのです。これもまた別の角度からみた同じテーマの問 題です。 上：そして、日本では議論は1つで終わりません。いろいろ混ざり合 っているものなのです。 ベ：オランダ人にはそれはタブーでしょうね。 上：ピート・ヘイン・イークが一つのテーマにこだわって廃材で作っ ているようなことは、日本ではありそうにないことです。日本では、 マーケティング、値段などを考えなくてはいけません。ストリート・ シーンにも反映されているように、多層社会ですから。 オ：それならば、なぜ無印良品のような明快なコンセプトが受け 入れられるのでしょうか？ 上：シンプルで安全な生活を思い起こさせてくれるブランドだから ではないでしょうか。 ベ：すべての日本人に受け継がれている江戸の精神に訴えかけら れるのですね。 「少ない中でやっていける」と。この点は、何でもや りすぎるな、というオランダ人のカルバン派精神とも似通っていま す。 上：オランダ人の方が何を自分が欲しているかはっきりわかってい ると思います。以前、隈研吾が人々の生き方を10に分類した本を書 いていました。その分類の一つには当てはまると誰もが共感する のですが、オランダ人はどれに当てはまるかなんて気にしない。個

O: Why isn’t this reflected more outspoken in design?

B: I think it’s a different attitude to the whole sustainability issue. If you make something that is too beautiful to throw away, people won’t. Instead, they start loving it. I remember Sejima telling me once although her building maybe didn’t meet all ecological building criteria to be marked as such, inside people see the seasons change, watch the light, etc. They are connected people with nature through her designs. It’s another perspective on the same issue.

U: And there isn’t one discussion in Japan, it’s a mingle-mangle.

B: To the Dutch a taboo.

U: What Piet Hein Eek does with discarded wood, sticking to one theme: not feasible in Japan. You have to think about marketability, price; the Japanese society is multi-layered. It’s reflected in the street scene as well.

O: But how can a clear concept like Muji work then?

U: It’s a brand that reminds us life can be simple and safe.

B: It appeals to the Edo spirit inherent in all Japanese - ‘we can do with little’. In a sense it overlaps with the Dutch Calvinistic mentality to not overdo things.

U: I think the Dutch are far more confident about what they want. Kengo Kuma once wrote a book defining ten typologies of how men live. Everyone sympathises to fit into one of them.

A Dutch person doesn’t care to which category he belongs, you are much more individualistic.

Femke Bijlsma – Dutch Femke Bijlsma lived in Japan for six years. Since a year she runs her own architecture and design studio Rocksteadydesign in Amsterdam together with Barend Koolhaas. She has written about Japanese design and architecture for international publications – Frame, Mark, La Repubblica

B: We have Consumentengids, an objective survey tells us which product is best for the lowest price. In Japan, this is non-existing, but instead there is Ranking Queen, a chain of shops ranking the best-sold items. One buys the most popular, the number one, which isn’t necessarily the best one, right?

The whole preoccupation with what others do would never work in Holland.

U: It’s mass trend culture. But then again, many levels of culture exist aside each other. The tea culture, old values, the kimono culture. If you pay attention you can even see them in the street scene.

B: A combination of high culture and low culture.

U: It makes it difficult for young designers. They are well aware of the past, respect old cultural values and techniques which are still very alive. It blurs the clarity in design. Tea ceremony shows the Japanese culture very nicely. Arita* for instance is very refined. But there is also very coarse looking earthenware that the same tea ceremony loves. They exist parallel.

O: What do you miss apart from the food?

B: Sometimes I think about Shinto*, the God in everything. It’s reflected in products, everything is animated. Even a fire hose gets eyes – it evokes an emotional response, you start loving it.

It’s not unusual to see businessmen calling with a bouncing little doll attached to his cell phone. オランダ人フェムケ・ベルスマ は日本に6年間滞在。1年前か らアムステルダムでバレンド・ コールハースとともにロック・ ステディー・デザイン 建築デザ イン事務所を運営。日本のデ ザインや建築に関する記事が デザイン誌 Frame、 Markやイ タリアの新聞 La Repubblicaな どに掲載されている。

人主義者なのですね。 ベ：オランダには、どの商品が最安値で一番良いかという調査をま とめた消費者ガイドブックがあります。日本では、このような本は ありませんが、一番売れている商品を集めたお店のランキング・ク イーンがありますね。一番人気のあるものを買うわけですが、ナン バーワンが必ずしも一番良い商品とは限りませんよね？他人の動 向を気にするという考えはオランダにはないのです。 上：（日本は）集団トレンドカルチャーなのです。でも、お話しした ように、多様な文化がそれぞれ共存しているもの事実です。茶道、 古い価値観、着物の文化といったものも、注意を払えばストリート・ シーンでも目にすることができます。 ベ：ハイ・カルチャーとロー・カルチャーが混じり合っているのです ね。 上：それで、日本の若いデザイナーは苦労するわけです。過去のこ とを理解し、今も生き続ける古い文化の価値観や技術にも敬意を 払う結果、デザインが明確でなくなるのです。茶道は日本の文化を うまく表現しています。例えば有田焼は非常に洗練されています が、同時に素朴な粗い陶器もまた茶道では好まれます。どちらも 共存しているのです。 オ：食べ物以外で、日本の何が一番懐かしいですか？ ベ：時々私は神道について考えます。神はすべてのものに宿る。モ ノにも映し出され、すべてのものは生きている。消火用ホースにさ え、目がある。これは楽しいことで、好きになりますよ。日本ではビ ジネスマンが携帯電話に付けた小さな人形をゆらゆらさせながら 話しているのを良く見かけます。オランダではこんなことは考えら れません。

Masaki Yokokawa is owner of CIBONE, a life editiorial store in Tokyo which is well known for its work with many Dutch companies and designers such as Moooi, Piet Hein Eek, Maarten Baas, Studio Job and Hella Jongerius.

横川正紀は、モーイ、ピート・ヘイン・イーク、マーティン・バース、 スタジオ・ヨブ、ヘラ・ヨンゲリウスなど多くのオランダのデザイ ナーやブランドと深い交流を持つことで知られる東京のライフ・エ ディトリアル・ショップCIBONEの代表である。

The relationship between Japan and Holland is a special one, for over 200 years Japan closed its borders to all foreign vessels with the exception of China and Holland, so the Dutch represented Japan’s only exposure to Western culture for a long period of their history. During this time, through a mutual trade of both goods and information, a cultural exchange took place, Japan learning much about Western knowledge and attitudes to Art, Science and Medicine and the Dutch learning of the Japanese sensibility for detail.

日本とオランダの関係は特別なもので、日本が200年以上も鎖国を 続けた間も、中国とオランダとは交流を持っていた。つまり、長い間 日本は唯一オランダを通じて西欧文化に触れていたのである。この 間、品物や情報のやり取りを通じて文化交流が進み、日本はオラン ダから西欧の芸術、科学、医学に関する知識や考え方を、オランダ は日本の細部にこだわる繊細さを学んでいった。

Although when looking at the end result of Japanese and Dutch design it would appear that there is little similarity, we do feel that our long relationship with the Netherlands has led to a similarity in our approaches to Design. We both take a conceptual approach to design, governed less by fashion or trends, and more by a thinking process, breaking things down to their bare minimum, understanding them and finally reconstructing them. We also feel that both cultures have great interest both historically and now of the more artisinal, crafted product rather than the industrial.

There are off course also distinct differences in Japanese and Dutch culture which have taken the final path of the design process in different directions. Japan has preserved its society in a way few other cultures have, with the closure of their borders there was little dilution genetically or culturally making them a very homogenous people with a distinct set of rules governing their society. This has led to a great appreciation of simple, minimal design with a large emphasis on the importance and beauty of details. In contrast, the Dutch are a well travelled people with a large mixture of influences from around the world; their attitude is more outgoing, more passionate and has resulted in a more avant garde style of design.

The Netherlands are also well served by the government support of their design industry which has helped provide some of the best design schools in the world and hence some of the best designers, and an environment that is highly conducive to working in the design industry. In Japan, the design industry is supportive of the new generation of designers, but there is still little support from the government despite the huge number of design tourists arriving in Japan every year.

Last year at CIBONE we have embarked on an interesting exploration of the relationship of Dutch and Japanese design and our mutual interest in craft. We have collaborated with Hella Jongerius to produce a series of enamelware plates made by some of Japan’s top enamelware craftsmen from Ando Cloisonne. Ando is the oldest, largest company in Japan making Japa-

日本とオランダのデザインを見ると、一見、類似点は少ないようだ が、日本とオランダとの長い交流の結果か、デザインに対するアプ ローチには似通ったところがあるように感じる。共に、デザインに対 してコンセプチュアルなアプローチを行い、ファッションやトレンド に左右されるというよりも、思考過程や物事をむき出しのミニマム な状態にまで突きつめ、理解し、最終的にまた再構築する傾向にあ る点である。またどちらの文化も、歴史的にそして現在も、工業的と いうより職人的な手作りのプロダクトに興味をもっているように思 う。 もちろん、日本とオランダの文化には明らかな違いがあり、最終的 には異なったデザインプロセスを辿って別の方向へ進んでいる。日 本は、他の文化にではほとんど見られないことだが、国境を閉ざし ていたため、遺伝子も文化も多様化せず、人々は非常に均一化さ れ、独自のルールで自分たちの社会を治めてきた。その結果、細部 の美しさにこだわったシンプルでミニマムなデザインが好まれる。 対照的にオランダ人は、世界を旅し、世界各国の影響が混ざり合っ ている。そのため、外交的、情熱的な傾向がより強いので、アバン ギャルド的なスタイルのデザインになる。 また、オランダでは、政府がデザイン業界を厚く支援してきたこと もあり、世界有数のデザイン学校が生まれ、その結果優秀なデザイ ナーを輩出、さらにデザイン業界で働きやすい環境が整っている。 日本では、デザイン業界が新しい世代のデザイナーを支援している が、毎年デザインが目的の多くの旅行者が日本にやってきているに もかかわらず、日本政府からの支援はほとんどない。 昨年CIBONEではオランダと日本のデザインの関係やそれぞれのク ラフトへの思いを一つのカタチにする作品を発表した。ヘラ・ヨンゲ リウスとコラボレーションし、安藤七宝店の最高の技術を持つ職人 による七宝皿のシリーズを手掛けたのだ。安藤七宝店は、日本で最 も古くかつ最大の「七宝焼」と呼ばれるエナメル工芸の会社だ。七 宝焼は19世紀初め名古屋（尾張藩）で梶常吉によって始まった。彼 はオランダから日本にもたらされたエナメル工芸品に出会い、弟子 の職人に同じものを作るように命じ、長い時間と大変な努力の末、 職人はこれを世界に通用するレベルにまで発展させた。ヨンゲリウ スは長年エナメル工芸に興味を持っていたが、エナメル工芸は大変 壊れやすく高価なものなので工場での生産には向かず、ヨーロッパ では事実上忘れられていた。しかし日本では、この技術は慎重に受 け継がれ、洗練され、長い伝統を持つものとして今も残っている。 職 人と共に密に働きながら、素材の複雑さや何が実際に可能

で、どこまでならヨンゲリウスのアイディアが実現可能なのかを発 見していくというのは、職人にとっても彼女にとっても、わくわくす るような楽しいプロセスだった。今回の密接なコラボレーションで は、それぞれの作品にヨンゲリウスのデザインの特徴とともに日本 の職人技の特徴である繊細さ、美しさが見られる気がする。そし て、このプロセスを通じて、私たちはオランダと日本のデザインへの アプローチの共通点を認識したのである。 私たちの目には、ドローフデザインはデザインの新しい時代の幕開 けのように映った。これにより、ダッチデザインは世界的に有名に なり、各国のデザイナーに新風を巻き起こした。オランダのデザイ ナーそしてアイントホーフェン・デザイン・アカデミーは業界で確固 たる地位を維持するだけの作品を生み出し続けている。しかし、 次の世代のダッチデザイナーがどんな驚きをくれるのか？次のダッ チデザインとは？そんなことを世界はさらに期待している。

nese enamelware, or ‘Shippo’. Shippo was originated in Nagoya

by Shogun Tsunekichi Kaji in the early 19th Century, he came across an enamelware plate that had been brought to Japan from Holland and ordered his craftsmen to try and reproduce it. With much time and effort the craft here developed to a level receiving worldwide recognition. Jongerius had long been interested in working with enamel, but the crafts great fragility and high cost made it unsuitable for industrial production and hence it practically died out in Europe. In Japan however the craft has been carefully preserved and there still remains a sense of respect and appreciation for the techniques of the craftsmen which show the results of years of tradition and refinement. Working closely with the craftsmen to discover the intricacies of enamel, what was really possible and to what extent it was possible to realise Jongerius’s ideas was a fascinating process for craftsman and designer alike. This was an in depth collaboration and we really feel that in each piece you can see the beauty and detail of technique characteristic of Japanese craft, as well as the character of Jongerius’s design. It was during this process that we really recognised a similarity in the approach to design between the Dutch and Japanese.

In our eyes, Droog Design was the beginning of a new era in design, which saw Dutch Design become famous around the world and inspire a new attitude to design amongst designers of many nationalities. Dutch Designers and Eindhoven Design Academy have continued to produce work which has allowed them to stay extremely strong in the industry; however we feel that the world is now waiting to see what the next generation will do, what is next for Dutch Design?

Created in Holland – Luske, Porcelain and Product Design Sander Luske – His JP-12 dinner set consists of plates, bowls and cups made from black and white porcelain, glazed on the inside only. The designer drips the black porcelain across the white, JacksonPollock-style (hence the initials). Each piece is unique.

“It’s a bit like making a chocolate cake,” Luske says.

“You might drip the chocolate over the plate or the cake.”

– Hoedaya and Wurzinger have designed the hektik.cc characters which they apply on baby t-shirts and other products. Many clothes or products for babies are often too sweet or too romantic. Our brand stands for something a bit tougher and cheekier.

– The t-shirts and the accompanying hats are made in a sweatshopfree environment. The character prints are boldly graphic, simple and distinctive.

– In our vision, on every chain - from the realisation of the product to the one that purchase it - joy and fairness has to be passed from one chain to the other.

The basic t-shirt is being made in the USA while other products are being produced in Social Workplace in the Netherlands. Currently we are working on a biodegradable packaging.

An artisan who creates from experimentation with materials.

Marianne develops her own techniques in the weaving process.

She is hired for interior architects and private clients, and also makes installations for exhibitions.

– The horsehair used for the fabric is sourced from live horses overseas (mainly from Mongolie). The horsehair fabric is than mechanically woven at John Boyd Textiles in the UK. The horsehair is completely natural and each lampshade is assembled in-house at the designers studio.

In the Netherlands, we have a store called HEMA (www.hema.nl).

In November 1926, HEMA opened its first branch in Amsterdam; it was a store for the common man where everything was for sale at unit prices. As of 2008, HEMA has branches in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg and more than 10,000 employees. But its philosophy has stayed intact: the brand’s strengths are attractive design and a high-quality range at reasonable prices.

– The first time I was in Tokyo, I walked into a MUJI store. I was surprised by the similarities between HEMA and what I saw there. The colours, materials and style were different, but the same feeling of simplicity and user-friendliness was undeniably present. It made me curious about the similarities between Dutch and Japanese design and the place of design in Japanese society.

– I quickly became familiar with the work of Naoto Fukasawa, inarguably Japan’s best-known and influential designer and also the man behind various MUJI products. Fukasawa is known for his simple designs. Along with elements of wry humour, his products have a lightness and apparent effortlessness – traits also often ascribed to Dutch design.

– The Japanese public’s interest in Dutch design doesn’t just have to do with the country’s rising wealth and increasing focus on Europe. This interest is also fuelled by a feeling of recognition and acknowledgement. Dutch design evokes a feeling of quality and durability, but at the same time, it is surprising and cheerful.

– It is therefore no surprise that Dutch designers are increasingly establishing themselves in Japan. Various magazines and design blogs, including PEN, Axis, Casa Brutus and www.japandesign. ne.jp, devote extensive attention to Dutch design. And a great many design shops and galleries, such as Cibone, Kakitsubata and GAS As Interface, exhibit and sell products of Dutch origin.

Design events, such as Design Tide and Interior-lifestyle, invite various Dutch designers to take part each year.

– The interest is mutual. While Premsela - Dutch Platform for Design and Fashion has work-ed since 2005 to make Dutch design known among the Japanese public, our specific goal is to enter into a dialogue with Japanese designers and professionals.

With the two countries’ harmonious ways of thinking about design and natural interest in each other’s histories and societies, we hope in the coming years to enter into inspiring collaborative projects. I hope the exhibitions and gatherings during Tokyo Designers Week 2008 (see elsewhere in this magazine) will be the next step in this process of getting better acquainted. Let’s stay in touch!

誰でも何でも割引価格で買える店として、アムステルダムに第1号 店をオープン。2008年HEMAはオランダ、ベルギー、ルクセンブル グに支店を持ち1万人以上のスタッフが働くようになったが、その 経営哲学は今も失われていない。このブランドの強みは魅力ある デザインの高品質の品を手頃な価格で提供することだ。 東京に初めてやって来た時、私は無印良品へ行ってHEMAとの共 通点に驚いたものだ。色、材質、スタイルは違うが、シンプルさや 使いやすさは紛れもなく同じだった。それで私はオランダと日本の デザインの共通点や日本社会におけるデザインの役割に興味を持 つようになった。 すぐに私は深澤直人の作品を知るようになった。彼は間違いなく 日本で最も有名で影響力のあるデザイナーだ。同時に彼は無印良 品の多くの品をプロデュースしている。深澤はそのシンプルなデザ インで知られ、彼の作品には皮肉たっぷりのユーモアの要素とと もに、ダッチ・デザインについてしばしば評される特徴でもある、 明るさと力の抜けた感じがある。 一般の日本人がダッチ・デザインに興味を持つのは、国が豊かに なってきていることやヨーロッパへの関心が高まっているためだけ ではない。その背景には、ダッチ・デザインが認められ評価されて いるということがある。ダッチ・デザインには高品質で丈夫だとい うイメージがあるが、同時に意外で面白い部分もある。 そう考えると、オランダ人デザイナーが日本で徐々にその地位を確 かなものにしているのは不思議ではない。PEN、 Axis、Casa Brutus、www.japandesign.ne.jpなど、様々な雑誌やデザイン関係の ブログが、ダッチ・デザインに注目している。Ciboneや燕子花、ガ ズアズインターフェイスといった多くのデザインショップ、ギャラリ ーではオランダの商品を展示、販売。またデザイン・タイドやイン テリア・ライフスタイルなどのデザイン関連イベントには、毎年様 々なオランダ人デザイナーが参加している。 このデザインへの関心は一方的ではない。オランダのデザインと ファッションの協会であるプレムセラは、日本のデザイナーや専門 家との対話を目的に2005年から日本でダッチ・デザインのプロモー ションを行なってきた。オランダも日本もデザインに対して調和の 取れた考え方をしており、それぞれの国の歴史や社会についての 自然な興味を持っている。今後両国で互いを刺激し合うような共 同プロジェクトが進んでいくことを望むのと同時に、東京デザイナ ーズウィーク2008の期間中の展示やイベントが相互理解への次の ステップになることを願っている。これからもどうぞよろしく！

Dutch fashion is conquering the hearts of international fashionistas, and Dutch design is famous around the world.

It’s no wonder – Dutch designers always know how to give a fresh twist to things that previously seemed eternally unchangeable.

Premsela works to strengthen the Netherlands’ position as a leading design country. We do this with lectures, discussions and exhibitions, and with research, publications and advice.

Our most important mission is making links – between young and old, Dutch and foreign, fashion and design.

This Tokyo Designers Week, Premsela presents 13 Dutch designers at 100% Design Tokyo. Also Dutch design professionals will take part in the SoCa seminar programme at 21-21Design Sight.

Eaten in Holland / part II – Haring happen – Haring happen means ‘taking a bite of the herring’. This refers to how the Dutch eat this raw fish, commonly on the street outside a fish stall: you pick the fish up by its tail and hold it above your head, tilt your head backwards, slide it into your mouth - and take a bite.

Jana Flohr and Frederike Top were the winners of the SmallSpaceDesignRace, a competition that was organised by Tuttobene challenging designers to design a concept within 30 minutes.

This innovative endodontic device cleans the root canal more thoroughly by a new and patented technology, so dental professionals significantly improve their success rate of a root canal treatment. By pressing the ergonomically placed activation button, the handpiece starts pulsating and the integrated LED in the front of the handpiece is switched on to give the dentists a better view. The handpiece’s characteristic ring houses the inductive charging system. This results in a cordless and hassle-free handpiece which gives the dentist maximum freedom of operation.
