Social Design means designing with people instead of for them. Cooperation seems to be the most important instrument for arriving at solutions. It does not usually proceed automatically; we have to learn it. I know how difficult it can be: admitting ideas that go against your conviction. But my three-year-old daughter is clearly facing the same problem: playing together often becomes appropriating blocks. And that doesn’t help. Focusing too much on your own interests often throws a spanner in the works. But if cooperation does work, the result is bigger than the sum of the parts and you learn a lot about other people and about yourself in the process. The importance of this art was underlined by the philosopher and radical Bertrand Russell (1872 – 1970) when he said: ‘The only thing that will redeem mankind is cooperation’. It is both a gloomy and a hopeful view, but if it is true, something beautiful is happening now in Eindhoven. A new generation of designers and entrepreneurs seems to be having an easy time of it in this respect. Forms of cooperation appear to spring up organically, or people deliberately go in search of partners. The quest for solutions to social problems brings designers together, and as long as they do not lose sight of that goal, there

is a large chance of success just around the corner. The DOEN Foundation believes that designers who deploy their knowledge and skills for society can achieve a lot. Social Design has been on the agenda of DOEN Foundation since 2010. It supports projects in which design teams arrive at surprising insights and solutions for social issues. A large number of the projects presented in Eindhoven have been backed by DOEN, so I think that it is fair to say that the foundation has played a part in the development of this movement. Who four years ago would have ventured to imagine that Dutch Design Week would become a platform for this trend? A remarkable number of initiatives centred on the social aspect are being presented at DDW. One of them is The Umbrella, a collection of initiatives in Eindhoven on which Heini Lehtinen has written a nice article (page 6). Or take one of the many socially committed graduation projects at the DAE such as Protective Underwear, Julia van Zanten’s beautiful designs for underwear for incontinent senior citizens, which offers a solution to a widespread and little-known problem (page 4). It is not by chance that Anne van der Zwaag has written a book on the topic at this very

moment: Looks Good. Feels Good. Is Good. – how Social Design changes our world. The book launch will take place here at DDW on 25 October (see page 13, nr. 52). This edition of Connecting the Dots contains an exclusive pre-publication of a chapter from the book, accompanied by a column by the author (page 8). And don’t forget to take a look at Spijkerbrij by Leonie Vlaar and Lois Stolwijk at Hier is Utrecht. They invite the public to bring along an old pair of jeans for on the spot upcycling to a new utility (page 5). For this special edition we have selected a total of 77 presentations at DDW which can be said to be good and to do good. Various of the designers in the guide graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven. The Graduation Show always occupies a central place for me during DDW, and it immediately conveys the atmosphere of this event as well: bold, cheerful and innovative, a haven for ideas that are increasingly about a better future and less and less about a better product. So take your time this year, join in the workshops, stay for a bite to eat, collect waste, make music, slip out of your jeans and stay up late. David Heldt

Protective Underwear by Julia van Zanten

DIY Instruments by Sandra Suubi Art, music and trash not only play a central role in Sandra Suubi’s DIY Instruments workshop at Dutch Design Week, they’re also three things that are close to the Ugandan artist’s heart. With dreams of being an eco-artist, Sandra was known on campus as the girl who collected trash for her art that aims to create beauty from waste. “I started working with waste in my final year of college with a quest to bridge the gap between visual arts and performing arts using cheap and affordable means,” explains Sandra who also performs in an all-girl band. In preparation for the workshop, Sandra collaborated with musicians, producers and other creatives to make experimental African instruments from different types of trash. During the workshop (held in English) as part of Age of Wonderland, an event which focuses on sustainable social change, Sandra will guide participants in making instruments from recycled materials. Participants of all ages are welcome to join, just remember to bring your own trash. Suggestions include hard plastic buckets, pipes and bottle caps, metal pots and cans, flexible panels, glass bottles, beads, buttons or whatever the would-be performer desires. Concluding the week will be a jam session where participants can showcase their instruments and performance skills in their own way in a public concert. The workshop highlights not only making and music, but resourcefulness, possibilities and co-creation. Any tips for the would-be DIY musicians? “When you have an idea, start by using what you have around you. We have what we need to start; giving excuses is not the answer. We don’t have to look very far to make things happen but simply need to utilise the so-called little that we have around us and the big things will come. I would love us to see trash as material for creation and treasure right in front of our eyes.” Let the trash music begin!

Imagine losing control of your bladder while you are out for dinner in a restaurant or sitting on the bus. For people who suffer incontinence, the fear of not being able to make it to the toilet in time and the consequent embarrassment often prevents them from leaving their home or engaging in social situations. Triggered by this condition that affected her grandfather, Julia van Zanten felt a responsibility to examine this issue and challenge the stigma of incon tinence. “Practical solutions exist in the form of adult diapers, but these do nothing to address the emotional side of this common problem,” Julia explains. Her collection of washable textile underwear, accompanied by washing elements and an awareness campaign, aims to re-instil a sense of dignity and normality to women who suffer mild incontinence. The collection comprises two sets of high-absorbent underwear made of silk and wool (outer) paired with absorbent yarn and microfiber (inner). One garment has an inner pocket to fit a removable textile pad, and the other is a protective underlayer that also fits a disposable pad. Beautifully detailed to resemble regular women’s underwear, the garments look luxurious yet personal. Two collecting aids – an aluminium vessel for home and a waterproof travel bag – encourage washing rather than disposal. The project aims to change the perception of incontinence undergarments by repositioning them in a normal daily context, both for the user to wash and wear as a regular garment, and in retail where it shouldn’t be categorised as a medical aid. The vessel will soon be available for sale online and prototype garments are currently being tested for manufacturing. Julia: “In the end it is not about the end product but the experience and conversation around its cycle of use leading to a change in perspective. Spijkerbrij by Leonie Vlaar and Lois Stolwijk

Precious Waste by Michelle Baggerman Michelle Baggerman’s 2009 Design Academy Eindhoven graduation project Precious Waste showed how a humble material like a plastic bag could be repurposed into beauti ful textiles. Discarded plastic bags are spun into fine yarns and then woven into intricate textiles, showing the huge contrast between the crafted end result and the disposable material. “My goal was to alter plastic shopping bags in a way that would extend the lifecycle of the material, improve its disadvantages and preserve its positive qualities,” says Michelle Baggerman. In the last five years, the project has evolved from Michelle’s studio in Eindhoven all the way to Mexico. By collaborating with Mexican social design organisation Anudando, the project now combines material innovation with social entrepreneurship. Anudando will produce textile items made from plastic bag yarn together with craftspeople from regional parts of Mexico who specialise in weaving, crochet and basket making. The plastic bags will be collected, selected and spun into yarn locally. At DDW 2014, Anudando will present material samples and prototypes of interior products as part of the first collection-in-progress entitled Renacimiento (meaning rebirth) that explores the potential of the original Precious Waste material in various crafts. “The craftsmen we work with are extremely skilled and inventive,” tells Michelle. “By offering them a new material to work with, which can basically be collected from the streets, and taking a new perspective on the different products they make, we hope to be able to revalue their work. We want to support them in continuing to develop the craft they take pride in, and earn a living doing it.” For now, the upcoming collection will only be available in Mexico but Anudando will research the feasibility of selling and shipping the products to the Netherlands and abroad while maintaining their environmentally friendly quality.

When second-hand clothes are donated to charity, wear able pieces will likely find new homes and unwearable remnants usually become waste – the latter accounts to about 20% of collected textiles according to designers Leonie Vlaar and Lois Stolwijk, founders of Leonie & Lois. Part of these remnants can be recycled but tough materials like denim, which comprise a substantial part of the waste, prove challenging. “The texture of denim is really strong, which makes sense since (riveted) jeans were originally created for miners, but this means they’re difficult to recycle,” says Leonie Vlaar. “It’s a shame to waste this denim considering how long it takes to produce a pair of jeans.” Armed with their passion for repurposing waste and a fascination for craft, the duo set out to give jeans a second life with their project Spijkerbrij, a portable denim recycling workshop. Used jeans (spijkerbroek in Dutch) and also offcuts are shredded into a pulp (brij) to which organic resin or a type of woodglue is added. The resulting new material can be shaped and hardened into a desired form. This process is rooted in Dutch tradition, as Lois Stolwijk explains: “In our research, we discovered that, tradit ionally, old textiles were recycled into paper, which is still done today. So we used the same technique, simplified it and instead of making paper, we made three dimensional products.” Low-tech machines use hand- and cyclepower to show the tangibility of the process and use no electricity. So far the duo are focusing on accessories (bowties) and interior products (lamps and seats) but the potential extends to board material to create furniture and even flooring. So good news for all those people who can’t quite throw out their favourite, worn out jeans: bring them to Dutch Design Week (or post them), and Leonie & Lois will transform them into a completely new product that’s personalised from your particular pair. Since Niels van Eijk and Miriam van der Lubbe’s first collaboration with Imperfect Design in 2011, it’s been a memorable rollercoaster ride with steep learning curves. Cantel, their collection of striking recycled glass vases, is made by glass blowers in Guatemala; the vivid colours derive from the original tints of the glass. But overcoming challenges and cultural differences has been well worth it to help the cooperative of glassblowers improve their livelihoods. The collection’s success sparked a second and third Cantel series, and the collaboration now incorporates ceramics and woollen textiles, all made with Guatemalan craftspeople. Imperfect Design pairs Dutch designers with craftspeople in emerging countries to produce handcrafted lifestyle products, with an eye to a Western audience. As the name suggests, the imperfection of handcraft is celebrated in the label’s designs. It combines producing attractive, affordable designs relevant to today’s audiences, with generating new long-term income opportunities for the craftspeople it collaborates with, which in turn supports positive social growth of the community. Importantly, focusing on both social and economic opportunities ensures more sustainable collaborations in the long run. Designing these collections requires a total shift in approach. “Normally we begin with an idea but in this case we start with the limitations of the possibilities!” explains Miriam van der Lubbe with a laugh. Through collaborative hands-on sessions with the craftspeople in their workshop, the products take shape. It’s a rewarding learning process that has taught Van Eijk and Van der Lubbe patience, and in turn, the craftspeople gained insight into new ways to diversify and contemporise their repertoire, for example by making a bigger variety of products from existing moulds. While imperfection is the underlying goal, this needs to be balanced with quality to meet consumers’ expectations. “Each piece has variations and we have to constantly check as to what extent these imperfections are still acceptable,” continues Van der Lubbe. “The Cantel collection is rich in colours and shapes, and its irregularities and robustness, instead of the delicateness associated with glass, become its unique selling points.” Imperfect Design with work of Van Eijk & van der Lubbe is exhibited at Klokgebouw 50, 5617 AB Eindhoven www.vevdl.com, www.imperfectdesign.eu Video interview: www.vimeo.com/108135008 Presentation nr. 12 page 11

Socially Engaged, Independent and Networked Text: Heini Lehtinen

Collaborative network called The Umbrella gathers together designers and creatives who value social processes within their design efforts. The network was conceived spon taneously during preparation for this year’s Dutch Design Week, and it’s looking for new ways to communicate complex projects to make them easier to grasp during a week full of design sensations. The world is fast and so is the presentation of creative work. Facebook and design blogs deliver an endless stream of easily consumable and likeable projects. The world of physical exhibitions and fairs is struggling to keep the pace and is trying to present its content in small, digestible bites. “Smaller and more” is the call of the day. Some projects though don’t benefit from and even don’t deserve to be put into such formats. Although ‘social design’ is the talk of the town, the number of socially relevant and actually manifested, working projects is small at events like the Dutch Design Week, often struggling to communicate the complexity of their nature.

The newly-conceived collaborative network, The Umbrella, strives to shift the situation and put ‘hands down bottom up’ initiatives on the map – literally. The network consists of five initiatives and collectives with location or roots in Eindhoven, and a shared will to connect. Each of the participant initiatives – Social&, Fictional Collective, Collectie Veenhuizen, NRE Terrein, and Achtertuin – will exhibit individually at Dutch Design Week. In addition, two other projects, ‘Hunnie’ by Henriëtte Waal and Sophie Krier, and ‘Two Hats’ by Ron Krielen, will be included in the program. The network will offer guided tours through the city, food events, workshops, presentations and discussions, and also publish a handout with further information, a printed map and a post-publication to share the experiences of the first phase. “Most of us met in Eindhoven in one way or another as fellow students, colleagues or mentors,” says Minsung Wang, a co-founder of Social& and the network. “Over the year Christine van Meegen, Conor Trawinski and myself constantly exchanged thoughts about cooperation. Being well aware of each other’s activities, we shared ideas about a network during the Dutch Design Week. We started by approaching people within our immediate network. This work grew to become a network of five initiatives and two individual projects for this year’s Dutch Design Week.”

The unifying feature of the participating initiatives lies in shared attitudes towards design. In practice, the design is often tied around people and participation through events, workshops and facilitation. Instead of focusing on form in the first place, there is an emphasis in valuing social processes within the design projects. People are drawn into the design work to create more social interaction. One of the aims of the network is to explore ways to communicate designs effectively both within and outside of the traditional showcase. “As independent and networked designers, we are capable of creating experiences for people to better understand the designs we value and act upon. The Umbrella is both an invitation and a call to converse about, indulge in, and network for projects with immediate or eventual social impact,” states Minsung Wang. “We see the network as one of many results of how we work, a cooperation that emerged spontaneously. Rather than being initiated as a brand or a movement, the network functions as an expression of who we are as designers. It takes effort and time to gather and cooperate, but the advantages in doing so draw the initiatives together. We dream of a dynamic network of social innovation, which is in constant flux while maintaining human scale. The network manifests the fascination we have for working on complex social issues.”

Collectie Veenhuizen is a social-design based collection of products and services inspired by the prison village of Veenhuizen. The products and services developed for the collection have been influenced by the cultural, historical, social and environmental qualities of the local area, and thereby reveal a previously undisclosed Veenhuizen. Part of the collection was designed and produced in collaboration with the inmates of Veenhuizen Prison, through which the talents of the inmates and the advanced production facilities of the prison workshops were addressed and further developed. The first seven projects are momentarily in the first phase of development, including ‘The White Building,’ a creative transition space for prisoners by Eléonore Delisse and Laura Ferriere, which aims at fighting the high rate of criminal recidivism.

During DDW Atelierdorp and Kelderman en van Noort (KEVN) are opening their doors at NRE Terrein. Atelierdorp is ‘Opening Up’ all studios for visitors and showing new projects. Three of the exhibiting designers – Malou van Dijck and Laura Koenen of Studio Op Poten and Alejandro Cerón – will share how they work as socially engaged designers within a diverse design collective. The exhibited projects include Laura Koenen’s project ‘Losing One’s Self,’ a toolkit for a future with dementia. Visitors of the shared space of gallery KEVN and the bakery and restaurant LUDWIG will also experience first-hand how they are working together to offer people an open and accessible space for creative social interventions. De Achtertuin

Project Hunnie (‘them’ in local slang) researches alternative forms of nature recreation and landscape maintenance in De Boven landen, a 470-hectare peat meadow landscape in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The polder is destined to exchange its agricultural function for a nature reserve in the context of a European plan to link ecological zones to diversify. Designers Henriëtte Waal and Sophie Krier focused on the role of humans in relation to this ‘new nature’. What are our desires for nature made of? And to which form of nature do we want to contribute, now that cows and greenhouses are disappearing from the landscape? De Achtertuin by Klein Gemaakt lets people in the city enjoy and get in touch with the beautiful and pure products of small-scale farmers and producers: the kleine makers from and nearby Eindhoven. The project is dedicated to cooperation, and young adults with Asperger syndrome will work in the space. The interior is built of reused materials from farms by ‘Common Ground,’ an initiative that creates platforms for local inter actions based on food. Master students from Design Academy Eindhoven exhibit and apply interventions questioning the relation between consumer and producer and our habits of eating. Fictional Collective

Fictional Collective is a group of 24 design practitioners and Design Academy Eindhoven Master alumni. It is a content-based foundation for collaborations and dialogues around design and design practice. Members of the collective represent approximately 15 nationalities and a wide variety of cultural backgrounds from Italy to USA, and from Thailand to Australia. Due to being spread around the world, the group works both through long-distance and local collaborations to redefine the boundaries of social design through exhibitions, workshops and a publication. The newly-founded collective will present its first exhibition at historically valuable premises of Kazerne in the centre of Eindhoven during the Dutch Design Week. The exhibition will showcase design methodologies and practices through fragments of projects, installations, film, workshops, performances and research cases.

Social& is a social design event organized by Corner Spot and Vitalis Berckelhof in the neighbourhood of Doornakkers. The event offers a variety of creative workshops, exhibitions and discussions related to ‘Social & Wellbeing’ and ‘Social & Design’. Young and old share knowledge and expertise, and use each other’s qualities to develop new ideas. By presenting local creative projects such as ‘(on)breekbaar’ initiated by Jeannette Cleassen, and social design projects such as ‘Eindh-Made’ by Andrea de Chirico side by side, Social& is a refreshing and timely event when the participation of citizens is becoming more important. With over 30 participants, Social& explores the potential of presenting local initiatives and design projects together in hopes of w the inherent social innovation of Doornakkers.

This is how Social Design is described in our book that will be issued this week by Lecturis. All kinds of definitions of the term are going the rounds and various articles and publications have appeared on Social Design, but there was a lack of an accessible and interdisciplinary Social Design manual. That was what prompted me to make this book together with the DOEN Foundation. Looks good, feels good, is good. How Social Design changes our world presents this important tendency in design in a visual and inspiring way. It contains background articles, interviews with social designers, and unusual pilot projects from all over the world. The publication is a handbook for professionals and students, as well as being a catalyst for a creative movement with great potential. Ten years ago Social Design was still a relatively unknown concept, but several designers and design movements already

occupied themselves with social issues and environmental problems in the past. In a certain sense the Social Design movement can be said to go back to the Viennese designer Victor J. Papanek. In 1971 he wrote his influential book Design for the Real World, in which he argued that design is about more than just designing pieces of furniture, products and housestyles. He called upon designers to assume their responsibility: as far as he was concerned, luxury design products are superfluous as long as poverty has not been abolished. At the time the anti-capitalist Papanek was regarded as a dissident, but by now it has become much more common to stress both the aesthetic and ethical aspects of the design profession. In design education today we can also detect a shift from product-orientated to people-orientated courses. Students are challenged to come up with sustainable

solutions for complex problems. A growing number of designers are exploring methods and resources to give design a new value. Although the number of design projects with a social and sustainable slant is still a minority, Social Design is developing to become a concept that established institutes take into account. That recognition is very important. Creative minds can be a catalyst, but the importance of their contribution has to be seen by people far beyond the design field. Social Design is not a solo activity, but a joint effort on the part of designers, scientists, policymakers and producers. After all, it takes more than just a good idea to help other people, especially if they live in a completely different context. It is increasingly common for designers to provide a blueprint, a possible approach, on which a network subsequently gets down to work. A good example is the

market place for professional upcyclers Oogstkaart, which has been developed by the Superuse Studios firm of architects. Oogstkaart.nl is an online platform that shows every building professional what waste material is locally available for recycling. This makes it possible to collect and process your materials locally without wasting energy on transport and manpower. We hope that this publication will encourage creative minds, government bodies and representatives of the world of industry to team up and commerce to make a contribution to a better world. CÉSARE PEEREN AZ: Why did you recently change your name from 2012 Architects to Superuse Studios? CP: ‘We were trained as architects and automatically started an architectural firm. Since 1989 we’ve been working together and waste has been our theme from the start, long before anyone else was interested in this. In the course of our training we developed a journal which actually already incorporated our present vision. We not only make architecture from waste, but also furniture and utensils. Our studio also advises municipalities and businesses, and sets up both off-line and on-line initiatives concerning waste. Superuse represents our way of working: to make clever use of things that already exist, from billboards and airplane parts to vacant buildings and entire city quarters.’

AZ: Is your way of working based on a particular method? CP: ‘We don’t see designing as a linear process, but rather as a cycle of design and redesign, use and reuse. This is reflected in the organisation of our agency. We differentiate between four steps and therefore between four studios in our practice: Research, Materials, Design and Architecture. A project starts off with research into all the layers that are relevant to the project. In total we have defined 16 aspects, including location, energy and water supply, climate and open space planning, and of course utility and budget. Depending on the scope of the 182

project we unite these aspects; they are essential in the design process and determine the quality of the result. The method is not restricted to waste but can also be applied to other themes such as food. Research and materials come first, and after that we focus on the form. In that way you create an optimally functioning design, and that’s what we find aesthetically pleasing. Many architects and designers start from a conception of the end result, while with us this proceeds from investigating the material.’ AZ: How do you obtain your materials?

CP: ‘We not only create our own strategies but also our own tools. This sets us apart from other agencies. For example, oogstkaart.nl is a platform where every construction professional can see on-line which waste flows are located in the area. In that way you can harvest and process materials locally, without losing energy on transport and manpower. The first Oogstkaart (‘harvest map’) was produced in our early years, known as recyclicity.org, but no-one was interested. Meanwhile waste has become a commodity among designers. However, we are not just interested in the reuse of waste but rather in the entire lifecycle of materials. This links us to Gunter Pauli’s “Blue Economy” concept. The cyclical philosophy requires initiatives that support self-sufficiency. With electronic platforms such as oogstkaart.nl and superuse.org we help other people do so as well.’

About What frontiers should be addressed in design education? What tools are relevant to shape the future? Product + Interaction Design ArtEZ Arnhem are showcasing ‘Uncertainty Studios’ to explore the future of design/education. Presentation ‘Uncertainty Studios’ emphasises the relevance of ‘not knowing’ as a tool to hybridise new forms and futures. It is showcasing a selection of alumni works, a student lab on exploring the digital, societal and material domain and lecture series on lightness, psychology, noise and fiction. Design in the last centuries was traditionally thought in terms of professions and form. As we enter a period in which design defines upon interaction and information, we educate design in terms of its capabilities – which shows its virtues in new ways. Both departments are showing the strengths of design by working with ‘uncertainty’ through societal contexts and resources to transform students into innovative explorers. ‘Uncertainty Studios’ is a con tinuing collaboration and leading through research projects and laboratory work within the area’s of programming, craftsmanship, science, electronics, food and biodesign.
