Welcome
... to the November Connection.
Apologies if our front cover picture has got your tummy rumbling or good diet intentions wobbling, but we couldn’t 763060 resist showing you what this month’s Cake & Bake recipe 763293 looks like. You can try to replicate your own comforting 773372 puds by following the instructions on page 10. A little bit of 111 what you fancy does you good! 08457 909090 The nights are drawing in, and we’ve noticed that a lot of our customers are getting new stock and events ready for Christmas. But this month seems to be more of a reflective 01527 503030 one before we launch into all of the festivities. How does that old folk verse go? “Remember, remember, the 5th of 205831 01926 495321 November, gunpowder, treason & plot...” Bidford Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Big Bonfire event at the Big Meadow for all you fireworks fans (p. 26). Remembrance Sunday falls on November 13th this year 999 or 112 and Alcester Royal British Legion are holding 3 events from 444816 11th-13th to remember and honour those who sacrificed 08008 00151 themselves to secure and protect our freedom (p.57). 08004 04090 Other dates for your diary this month include Stir-up Sunday 08001 11999 on 20th, a tradition from Victorian times when family gather to make a Christmas pudding together (although I’ll probably just buy one from of our our lovely local shops!) and the first 0300 555 8171 Sunday of Advent on 27th, which brings with it the switching on of local Christmas lights (p. 46). 773239 It’s National Stress Awareness Day on Nov 2nd, so why 0844 855 2322 07771 616189 not take a few moments for your mental wellbeing to read our monthly offering from Lifespace, about “Knitting Life 766750 Together” (p. 14). 762450 For anyone who might have been living under a rock for 766200 a few years and doesn’t know about the threat to bee 270744 populations, or maybe you’d like a new hobby to keep you 01386 871777 bizzzzy, you might want to take a look at page 18 for details 763117 on a Beekeepers Taster Day. So much going on, so little space to list it all, so turn the pages and see what else November could have in store for 762285 you. 762494 Best wishes, 762888 773201 762444 Facebook.com/theconnectionmag 772200 Twitter.com/connection_mag 488247 Connnection circulation 7,550 488211 Editor: Amy James Phone 01789 491005 762555 Email: info@connectionmags.co.uk 772497 www.connectionmags.co.uk 762578 Printed by Warwick Printing Ltd 01926 883355 772384

Cake and Bake Steamed Date Puddings with Caramel Sauce These moist and sticky mini steamed puds will go down a treat after a Sunday roast! Serve with pouring cream or a dollop of vanilla ice cream to make them extra indulgent.
Ingredients: • 115g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 115g caster sugar • 2 medium eggs beaten • 115g self-raising flour • 1tsp ground mixed spice • 55g ready-to-eat dates, chopped • 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste (see Tip) • 1tbsp milk FOR THE CARAMEL SAUCE • 50g unsalted butter • 75g brown sugar • 75ml double cream
Makes 4 Ready in 1 hour 20 minutes
10 connectionmags.co.uk
1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C Fan/Gas Mark 5.
Lightly grease 4 x 175-200ml oven- proof ramekin dishes (or metal pudding basins) with the extra butter. Line the base of each with a circle of baking paper.
2. Place the butter and sugar in a bowl and beat together
until pale and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs, adding a spoonful of the flour if the mixture begins to curdle. Sift over the rest of the flour and mixed spice and fold in until thoroughly combined. Fold in the dates, vanilla bean paste and milk.
3. Divide the mixture between the prepared dishes and
cover each with a square of pleated baking paper then pleated foil and secure with fine kitchen string. Place the dishes in a deep roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the dishes. Bake for about 50 minutes until risen and firm to the touch.
4. To make the caramel sauce, gently heat the butter
and sugar in a small pan, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved. Simmer for 1-2 minutes until syrupy then remove from the heat and stir in the cream to make a smooth sauce. Turn the puddings out onto warmed plates and spoon over the sauce.
TIP
Vanilla bean paste has a very intense flavour so use sparingly. If unavailable use 1tsp vanilla extract or for a change of flavour try 1-2 tsp coffee extract instead.

Lifespace Speaks Inspired by her grandma, my daughter recently took up the hobby of knitting, and each week would enjoy her personal tuition. “I’m rubbishy at this” my daughter said one day, dropping her polka-dot knitting bag to the floor, as grandma dropped her back home. I asked her to show me what she’d done so far. My daughter reached into the bag and held the woolly effort aloft, like a wet dishcloth. A dozen or so beautifully arranged rows of vibrantly coloured wool were rendered useless because of a gaping hole halfway up. My daughter peered at me through the hole, through the stark undeniable evidence of her failing, then dropped the knitting to the floor, and rushed up the stairs in tears.
Have you ever attempted to knit? There is something quite hypnotic about the sound of knitting needles at work: Click-clack-clack. Watching the loop, pull and slide of each stitch finding its place. The gentle process of gradual transformation. But knitting requires tenacity and focus and the willingness to fail now and then. Two stitches forward, one stitch back, perhaps. Not the sort of thing all children get excited about, but all can learn from. Internationally renowned psychologist, Boris Cyrulnik, an expert on the notion of resilience, says knitting is his favourite metaphor for explaining how we survive. Having seen his parents deported to a concentration camp in 1942, never to return, Cyrulnik dedicated his career to understanding how people cope with uncertainty, resist adversity and recover from difficulty, including with genocide victims in Rwanda. How do people peer through the unwanted gaping holes of their experience and work out how to knit their lives back together? “Resilience is not just about resisting adversity”
"KNITTING LIFE TOGETHER"
he says, “it is about learning how to live.” When we change the way we view our struggles, we can gently and gradually allow a new story to emerge.
I picked up my daughter’s knitting from the floor and sat with it on my lap. “If only I had super sonic powers”, I thought. But no magic could instantly heal or help here. We are not wired for magic; but as neuroscience research is proving, we are hard-wired to help others in the face of hardship and struggle. We see this in the mentoring work of Lifespace Trust, where every week local young people receive the patient attention and positive encouragement they deserve in the face of life’s difficulties - whether with friends, family, school or themselves. Conversation by conversation, young people learning to knit their lives back together again. To create something of which they are proud. The following week her grandma patiently undid the rows back to the problem hole, and invited my daughter to begin again. To begin again from her small woolly-failure. She did. Stitch by stitch. Row by row. And with each week the number of completed rows grew. She learned different types of stitch. She would come home and with a wide smile show me her progress. “It’s good isn’t it daddy?”, she would say. Now, when something goes wrong - a dropped stitch, a tangled row - she understands a little more that this is an inevitable part of the creative process. That a small patch knitting is indeed a signpost to this bigger thing called Life, and that it sometimes means Stopping. Undoing. Starting again.
Chris Spriggs, founder Lifespace Trust

To Bee or not to Bee... Are you interested in Beekeeping but not sure exactly what is involved? You could find out if beekeeping is for you by coming to Stratford upon Avon Beekeepers’ Taster Day between 10am and 4pm at Luddington Village Hall on Saturday 28th January 2017. The Day will provide an informal and low cost opportunity to find out more about the craft before spending money on courses and equipment. With practical demonstrations (but no live bees!) our experienced beekeepers will be on hand to give advice. This could be your first step to a most rewarding hobby. The cost is £15 for the day, including light refreshments. For those with more serious intentions of becoming a beekeeper, but with little or no knowledge, why not join our Introduction to Beekeeping Course. The course, held on alternate Tuesday evenings from mid February at Luddington Village Hall, also includes two hands-on sessions at the Association Apiary in Hampton Lucy. The cost of this course is £75. For more information and a course syllabus please visit our website www.stratfordbeekeepers.org.uk or phone Mike Osborne on 01789 731745. The Stratford upon Avon & District Beekeepers’ Association - supporting local beekeepers since first formed in 1936, aiming to promote and further the craft of beekeeping. Our programme covers a range of educational and social activities based on indoor meetings during the winter months and more frequent practical events during the active season at the Association’s Apiary.

Garden Fireworks by Pippa Greenwood
You may be planning a traditional display of fireworks on November 5th, but why not also think ahead and plant yourself a few garden fireworks? At this time of year, there are still several stunning flowers that remind me of fireworks, such as the flamboyant red hot pokers or kniphofias, also known as torch lilies. Kniphofia ‘Brimstone’ has a rich yellowy-orange colour while the smaller ‘Little Maid’ has ivory-yellow flower spikes and reaches a height of about 2 ft (60cm). ‘Fiery Fred’ has blazing orangey-red flowers, while those of ‘Alcazar’ are bright red. Available in garden centres now, they do well if planted out in early autumn or spring in a sunny spot with a well drained soil. Once established you will have a regular display that really will go off like a rocket! Crocosmias help provide colour at this time of year, so take a look at ‘Lucifer’, with its flame-red, almost trumpetshaped flowers clustered along an elegantly arching spike, or for golden yellow flowers consider ‘Canary Bird’. The many varieties of crocosmia thrive in sun or part shade in a well drained yet also moist soil. Pot-grown plants should be
20 connectionmags.co.uk
available for planting now or in the spring, or you can buy the corms to plant towards the end of winter; these plants will look like the ultimate elegant arching firework. If fireworks like star clusters are more your scene, think about sedums or ice plants, many of which have star-shaped flowers. Some of the sedums, such as ‘Autumn Joy’, are still just about in flower, but plant pot-grown specimens now and from late summer you will have a tremendous show of blooms for several weeks, certain to attract bees and butterflies. The angels’ fishing rods, diorama, have arching stems in great numbers surrounded by broad, almost grass-like leaves, each measuring up to 5 ft (1.5m) in length. The rich pink funnel-shaped flowers dangle and sway in the wind and keep on bobbing straight back up again, even on a windy site. Consider growing some lupins for summer, either a yellow variety or ‘My Castle’, which has rich red flowers - just like a rocket racing skywards, but far less noisy. If you want a tree but space is limited, the Kilmarnock willow, Salix caprea ‘Kilmarnock’, is a good option, reaching a height of about 6 ft (1.8 m) after 10 or
/theconnectionmag
15 years. It has long weeping branches and bright yellow fuzzy catkins in spring, far better than any real Roman candle I know! Look around nearby gardens to see what a fantastic display autumn foliage can put on, then plant anything with good autumn colour to guarantee a glowing bonfire every autumn. Your garden centre should have a plentiful supply of shrubs and trees at this time of year. Finally, if you are having a bonfire, make it at the last minute to minimise the risk of hedgehogs or other wildlife hiding beneath the heap coming to an untimely end. The hedgehog is one of the gardener’s best friends, as it eats huge numbers of slugs and many other garden pests. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com to book Pippa for a gardening talk, or peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items, including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, pull-out EasyTunnels, ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Voucher cards, signed books and lots more besides.

Colonic Hydrotherapy: the benefits
could relieve suffering from problems such as skin conditions, IBS, depression, Candida, headaches, constipation, allergies, arthritis, brittle nails, and body odour.
The procedure is by no means a recent development, dating back some 3,000 years, and is based on the theory that, unless regularly cleared, the colon can become quite toxic; these poisons can re-enter and circulate into the bloodstream making us feel ill, tired and weak. Colonic hydrotherapy is believed to help with these emotional and physical problems, with some people finding it to be a helpful starting point for things like weight loss and a healthy lifestyle.
This gentle procedure can be quite comfortable and relaxing and takes place in Jeanette’s hygienic and private Bidford practice. Clients complete a health questionnaire regarding their diet and any other issues they may have. The procedure is then explained in detail to address any questions and concerns.
For the past year, Sacred Life in Bidford has been reassuring people regarding the tremendous possible benefits of Colonic irrigation.
Jeanette Wakeman, a colonic practitioner for over 15 years, says “It is basically a warm internal bath to soften and break up matter and clean the colon walls.” The bowel is able to hold up to 22lb of dry waste and it has been suggested that flushing it clean

The Three Horseshoes, Wixford
RI INN B TAIN
š ,
&
The Three Horseshoes in Wixford is a Country Restaurant offering quality home cooked food. Since reopening several months ago, we have established ourselves in the local area with a reputation for freshly made food (nothing is frozen) and locally sourced products. The Three Horseshoes is more restaurant than pub (although there is still a smaller, but beautifully appointed bar area), the owners like to describe their establishments as “Inns”. A large part of the menu is homemade on the premises to recipes passed down by the owner’s grandmother who had a large family and spent her whole life in Bidford. The ingredients are locally sourced wherever possible, the portion sizes are generous and the prices extremely competitive. We also cater for early birds with our branded coffee shop, “Coffee King”. Open from 10am for speciality coffees, cakes and pastries, we are located in former residential accommodation on the ground floor of the building that operates within, but independently from, the bar and restaurant. And for those who wish to enjoy their food and drinks in the sunshine and fresh air, our gorgeous outside gardens and seating areas are perfect for a relaxing dining experience. We have an excellent Gold Standard Carvery being served every day from 12 noon offering 3 fresh meats. Choose from either Butter Basted Turkey, Honey and Mustard Glazed Gammon, Perfect Roast Beef (we cater for everyone’s tastes, with two joints out at any one time; one cooked well done the other medium rare), or Deliciously Slow Cooked Lamb. As much fresh veg, homemade stuffing and Yorkshire Puddings as you like and cover it with our special homemade gravy. All this for £8.95 weekdays or £9.95 weekends. We now also do an early bird Carvery from 4pm to 6pm at £6.95 for Adults and £4.95 for Children.
www.innbritain.co.uk thethreehorseshoes@innbritain.co.uk
A new Head Chef has been appointed at The Three Horseshoes Sorin Badelita. We have a new menu out (please see www.innbritain. co.uk). Also offering our Seven Days of Specials (including Pie Monday, Lamb Tuesday, Steak Wednesday, Fish Thursday and some great other specials available on Fridays and Saturdays). We are now open every Monday and on Monday 31st October please join us for our Halloween Spooktacular Event. We invite you to join us this Halloween for a delicious themed Halloween 3 course set dinner starting from 7pm. Everything served will be delicious, nothing gruesome or ghastly. Come and join us in our spooky surroundings, and we will keep you safe from the ghouls, goblins and ghosts. Get dressed up; the best themed adult will receive £25 voucher to dine with us! Tickets are available at £29.95 per person. Kids can also get involved in an early competition from 5pm to 6.30pm. Best dressed will receive a fantastic bag of goodies! Our normal menu will also be available all evening.
The Three Horseshoes are a superb example of how Inn Britain have managed to combine the polish and professionalism of a restaurant chain with the genuine warmth and hospitality normally associated with a family owned establishment, and our General Management duo, Natalie and Guy, look forward to welcoming you and looking after you with a fantastic variety of dishes.
BOOK FOR THIS CHRISTMAS AT THE THREE HORSESHOES So apart from that there’s more than one good reason to have your Christmas celebration at The Three Horseshoes. Not only do we have a deliciously festive menu, we also have a range of specially selected cocktails and Champagnes; along with the perfect environment in which to share the moment with friends, family or colleagues. Make Christmas a time to remember at our fabulous Restaurant. The Three Horseshoes, Wixford is the perfect place to hold your Christmas party. We Try Nissan’s Bonkers Bladeglider BladeGlider offers a drift mode, similar to that found on the Focus RS, for sideways fun – yet more technology debuting here that is likely to filter down to other Nissans. The BladeGlider did feel softly sprung, though, more hot hatch than sports car over the kerbs. But most importantly it was great fun – and, with the instant torque available from those electric motors, it felt swift too.
As we hit the back straight of the twisting kart track in the middle of a shanty town in Brazil, the wail of the concept car’s electric motors reaches a crescendo.
With two 174bhp electric motors, independently powering each rear wheel, the BladeGlider is good for nearly 120mph and 60mph in under five seconds.
It’s banshee-like in pitch and would rival a hover bike from Star Wars in tone – this is noise like no electric car that’s gone before it, and it’s pointing to the future of electric vehicles (EVs) for Nissan.
It’s been built in conjunction with F1 experts Williams Advanced Engineering and features an unusual threeseater layout where both passengers sit behind and either side of the driver.
We’ve come to Rio de Janeiro to experience this mad Batmobile-like sports car concept, dubbed the BladeGlider.
Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed a drive of the multimillion pound concept car; however, we did get to experience it from the passenger seat.
With a narrow front track and aerodynamically designed body that widens like an arrow to the rear, the concept car takes design cues from the Delta Wing Le Mans racer of 2012. Although that car’s track time was short lived, the lessons Nissan learned are brought back to life in this mad sports car concept that’s part Robin Reliant, part McLaren F1, part Caterham.

Even from here it’s clear the BladeGlider offers a completely unique driving experience. Those two front wheels and the wide-track rear make for a planted and agile ride. On the tiny test track it whipped between corners with a whiff of tyre-smoking oversteer when our exuberant test driver got playful. For us mere mortals the
/theconnectionmag
It’s not supercar fast, but will push you back into the sports seats and throw you around enough to induce a whiff of travel sickness. There’s currently no word on range, though – which we’d guess means it’s currently pretty poor. Unfortunately, the chances of being able to order a BladeGlider from your local dealer any time soon is highly unlikely. This is just one of two produced and they’re likely to be the last. Well, in this form at least. So you might be wondering what the point is? Well, Nissan says that’s simple, really: they want to make people realise electrification doesn’t mean dull, and a sports car concept as bonkers as this proves otherwise. Nissan is long overdue a sister car to the Leaf, the world’s best-selling EV, and many will be hoping the lessons Nissan has learned here will lead to a thrilling follow-up. Fortunately, after a very short passenger ride, all the signs are pointing in the right direction for a smash hit.

Back of the Net
I really must start this month’s column with congratulations to Aston Villa. After 437 days without an away win, they finally acheived the win last night (as we go to print) against Reading. The local derby against Blues will be better for this win, especially with Blues riding high in the Championship. It never ceases to amaze me that there are people at the top of football who just don’t get it. Whether it’s players holding their arms out in their “what have I done?” pose (yes, it happens in every game, doesn’t it), FIFA bosses (allegedly) taking bribes or England managers being caught on camera looking to increase their income. While the FA and others spout their indignation at the latter two ‘crimes’ and others of their ilk, they turn their collective blind eyes to those crimes on the pitch. I’ve moaned about this enough in the past
Villa finally win away!
so I will leave it there, but I couldn’t let Big Sam’s stupidity go without a mention in some way. Good luck to Gareth Southgate, who seems somewhat more stable. Back to the league, and, as usual, the cities of Manchester, London and Liverpool have the Premiership all tied up, occupying all seven top places. I really can’t see any other team getting a look in. I know it’s early days but I would still go for Man City at this stage, although Spurs are looking strong, as are Liverpool, when they both get it right. Leicester are looking more like a one season wonder with every game, Southampton will be lucky to reach any higher than eighth and last season’s West Ham seem to be struggling in their new home after leaving Upton Park. As for lower leagues, only Blues are showing any promise. Albion are doing what they usually do and Coventry are really struggling in Division 1. But as I said earlier, it’s early days. See you next month. ... Back of the net!

How to avoid financial scams “Every 15 seconds someone is conned by a financial scam, writes Ruth Emery. There were more than 1m incidents in the first six months of this year, up 53% on the same period in 2015, according to Financial Fraud Action UK (FFA UK). Many people know the basics of how to avoid fraudsters and think they will not be caught out, but the scams are becoming ever more sophisticated and even the cleverest and most cautious consumers are falling victim. In the heat of the moment, you may feel pressured into making a decision. A new campaign called Take Five, led by FFA UK, urges people to stop and think for a moment before making what could be a costly mistake. How can you tell if a phone call, letter or email purporting to be from your bank or another company, such as BT or Microsoft, is genuine? The British Bankers’ Association says there are eight warning signs that you may be talking to a crook. A bank or building society would NEVER 1) Request your full Pin or online banking passwords. 2) Send someone to your home to collect cash or bank cards. 3) Ask you to email or text personal or banking information, such as your Pin or username. 4) Send an email with a link to a web page that asks you to enter your online banking login details. 5) Ask you to authorise the transfer of funds to a new account. 6) Call to advise you to buy commodities, such as land or diamonds. 7) Ask you to carry out a test transaction online. 8) Provide banking services through any mobile apps other than the bank’s official one. James O’Sullivan at the Building Societies Association said, “Financial institutions and the police would never ask you to type your Pin into your telephone keypad. If a consumer is suspicious about a phone call they should contact their building society or bank, either by visiting a branch or via a different telephone number to the one the suspicious caller is using [or a number they ask you to use].” The official phone number may be shown on your debit or credit card. If possible, call from another phone. If not, wait at least 10 minutes in case the scammers are still on the line. Never respond to an unsolicited call from someone claiming your computer has a virus. Just hang up. Personal Security North Yorkshire Police have an excellent

Why staying t as we get older is vitally important for our health and well being Author - Manager of The Greig Lifestyles and a GP referral specialist
The beneets of exercise throughout life are often touted. But is it safe for seniors older than 65 years to exercise? Absolutely. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, almost all older people can beneet from additional physical activity. Regular exercise prevents chronic disease, improves mood and llowers chances of injury. With age, the body does take a little longer to repair itself, but moderate physical activity is good for people of all ages and ability levels. In fact, the beneets of your elderly parents exercising regularly far outweigh the risks. Even elderly people with chronic illnesses can exercise safely. Many medical conditions are imp improved with exercise, including Alzheimer's and dementia, heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure and obesity. Regular exercise provides a myriad of health beneets, including improvements in blood pressure, diabetes, lipid proele, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and neuro-cognitive function. Regular exercise improves the following:
Bone Density and Risk of Osteoporosis. Exercise protects against loss in bone mass. Higher bone density will reduce the risk of osteoporosis, lower the risk of falling and prevent broken bones. Post-menopausal women can lose as much as 2 percent bone mass each year, and men also lose bone mass as they age. ag Research done at Tufts University shows that strength training can dramatically reduce this loss, help restore bones, and contribute to better balance and less fractures. Chronic Conditions and Cancer. Physical activity lowers risk of serious conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis and colon cancer, to name a few. It also helps in the management of high cholesterol and arthritis pain. The Greig Lifestyles based in Alcester offers a wide range of sports, leisure and recreational facilities and services promoting the health and wellbeing of all ages. Speciically we offer discount membership for the senior members of the community and free consultation advice through the GP referral scheme. Call 01789 400073 or visit www.thegreig.org.uk to ind out more information.
Immune Function. healt strong body eghts off infection A healthy, and sickness more easily and more quickly. Rather than sapping energy reserves entirely, recovery from an illness will take less of a toll on the body if the person exercises regularly. Cardio-Respiratory and Cardiovascular Function. Frequent physical activity lowers the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure. If the elderly person has hypertension, exercise will help lower their blood pressure.

Christmas at Coughton Court
This winter, visitors are invited to come and explore Christmas at Coughton as we open our doors for nine days of festive merriment. Weekdays are the best time to come and see the Tudor house decorated for a traditional family Christmas; surrounded by handmade decorations and foliage, your journey begins as you ascend the cantilever staircase and see how the family at Coughton celebrate their Christmases. Your journey concludes in the Saloon where you’ll be greeted by a floor to ceiling Christmas tree and, during the week, local schools and choirs will be singing carols in front of a roaring fire. Back out in the stableyard, the Coach House Shop will be selling a variety of seasonal gifts and treats, and Christmas lunches, mulled wine and mince pies will be available from the Coughton Kitchen Café. On the weekends of Saturday 26 to Sunday 27 November and Saturday 3 to Sunday 4 December join us for our Christmas Market. Festive stalls in the stableyard at Coughton selling food, drink, and gifts; perfect to fill up your cupboards with treats for the festive season and to purchase gifts for your loved ones. Over both weekends bring the little ones to meet Father Christmas who will be waiting, in traditional green robes, to receive visitors. New for this year, Coughton is opening its doors after hours for a unique opportunity to take an exclusive tour of the house dressed for Christmas. Join the team at Coughton for a Silent Night Tour, wander around the silent rooms, hear the clock ticking, listen out for the carol singers and enjoy some mulled wine by the fire in the Saloon before heading to the Coughton Kitchen Café for a festive buffet. So start your festive season with us here at Coughton where you can enjoy the house dressed for a traditional Christmas alongside warming mince pies from the restaurant and a weekend Christmas market filled with treats and gifts.

Alcester’s Youth Counci
Alcester Youth Town Council Needs You! Alcester Youth Council gives young people who aren’t old enough to vote a way of getting their voices heard. So far Youth Council members have been responsible for helping to get grants to build the Depot Youth Club, to help fund cinema equipment, highlighted a number of road safety issues to Warwickshire County Council and had input into the design of the new Skate Park and new play equipment on Jubilee fields. Members have also contributed to the Neighbourhood Plan for Alcester, so are helping to see that young people’s needs for future generations are considered. Where do we meet? At the Depot once every half term, meetings last around 2 hrs. We vary the day of the week so you don’t always miss the same lesson. Why should I get involved? Well, if you want to try and influence the way the town develops and ensure that Youth needs stay on the agenda, then this is one way to do it. It is also very good experience and is something that will look good on your personal statements or application forms for colleges or universities. It’s very simple to get involved; just let your school coordinator for Alcester Youth Town Council know and give them your email address. They will pass your details on to Cllr Julie Styles who is the current chair of the town Youth Council, so we can add you to the mailing list and let you know about future meetings. we usually meet once or twice each half term. We are looking for young people who will take the youth council seriously, contribute at meetings and publicise issues back at school. There is no set number of places but approximately 12-15 pupils from each school is ideal.

Bidford on Avon Parish Council in the County of Warwickshire
BIDFORD RURAL CINEMA We are pleased to offer two “early release” films this month: Friday 4th November @ 7.00 pm STAR TREK BEYOND (Cert 12A). From Director Justin Lin and Producer J.J. Abrams comes one of the bestreviewed action movies of the year. Dispatched on a rescue mission to the farthest reaches of space, the USS Enterprise is ambushed by Krall, a ruthless enemy sworn against the Federation. Crash-landing on an uncharted hostile world, Captain Kirk, Spock and the crew are separated with no means of escape. Only Jaylah, a rebellious alien warrior, can help them reunite and find a way off the planet in a race against time to stop Krall’s deadly army from triggering all-out galactic war. Friday 25th November @ 7.00 pm PETE’S DRAGON (Cert PG). For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales… until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon. Don’t forget you are now able to see a trailer online of the film being screened. All films are screened at the Crawford Memorial Hall, Salford Road. Ticket Office opens at 6.30 pm and prices remain at only £2.50 Refreshments are available courtesy of your local Warners Budgens. See page 42 for more details on Rural Cinema.

Age UK Warwickshire Befriending Service
Age UK Warwickshire provides a countywide Befriending Service for older people who feel lonely or isolated and would welcome a regular call from a volunteer. Many older people live in virtual isolation due to poor health, bereavement or little family contact. Modern living has also contributed to the sense of isolation some people feel as neighbours are often strangers, resulting in fewer visitors. The Befriending Service aims to provide quality one to one time on a weekly basis in people’s homes giving them something to look forward to, as well as a link to the wider community. The visits are purely social calls and many people like to play games, go for a walk or share a hobby with their Befriender, others just want to chat and catch up over a cuppa each week. If you, or someone you know would like to use this service please contact the co-ordinator Nikki Gill on 01788 552545 or alternatively email her at nikki.gill@ageukwarks.gov.uk. We are also actively seeking volunteers to help deliver this service so if you feel you are able to commit to a regular weekly visit to someone in your area contact Nikki for a chat.

A wide range of topics is covered over the course of the year and the group discuss and campaign on local issues of importance to them. New members are welcome.
