Welcome

... to the April Connection. As we usher out the first quarter of 2017, the beginning of the second one greets us with a myriad of local events: Alcester has a new and improved monthly market (p. 59); Bidford has another Escape Arts programme (p. 59), two cinema viewings (p. 42) and a new youth evening (p. 16); Coughton Court will be hosting events for daffodil and jigsaw enthusiasts (p. 46) and The Heart of England Forest gets ready to show off their bluebells (p. 48). All this in addition to the regular goings on in our fantastic communities, which you can find listed on pages 56 and 58. Of course, Easter Sunday is 16th April this year and you needn’t look far to see that several local pubs and restaurants are offering a good roast dinner. And for anyone doing their own Easter cooking this year, take a peek at the delicious gluten free chocolate brownie recipe over on page 10 as a dessert idea. Because you can never have enough chocolate this time of year! Mavericks are running a cracking competition this month, for which you might want to strike a pose, as one lucky reader will win a photoshoot, with hair and make up pamper time included. Entry details can be found on page 17. Once again, you will find plenty of fascinating reading material to peruse over your morning coffee or evening tipple: Lifespace Speaks (p. 14), Travel (p. 44), Gardening (p. 20), Motoring (p. 34), Back of The Net (p. 38) and get those cogs whirring with Sudoku (p. 6) or the kids’ puzzles for a gentler brain workout (p. 30)! We also pay tribute to Elma Harvey, a much-respected resident of Marlcliff, who sadly passed away recently. Find out more about this lovely lady over on page 57. And that’s about it for another month, so Happy Easter from our little team here at The Connection.

Lifespace Speaks The world is becoming a better place. Yes, I’m confident of that. ace? Really *Check for typing errors* A better place? Christopher, are you still in touch with reality? That opening sentence is not one’s first conclusion when watching the Bad News at 10 o’clock each night. There is plenty we can shake our fists at: 2016 gave us a myriad of disturbing, sad and puzzling events to t en, make our hearts race, cheeks redde tears swell and fists rise. Choose your y favourite topics: 1. The Twitter account of Mr. Trump 2. Refugee crisis 3. Number of young people in UK presccribed anti-depressants doubled in last decade 4. Footballers paid £300,000 a week 5. NHS and school budgets being g cut (again). Etc. If you want, you can create the longest list of issues in the world at which you like to shake your fist. Hey, I’ve mastered it well. Perhaps our brains were designed to need a regular dose of “shake-my-fist at the news” to keep us all sane? Maybe. But what would we do with all the free time if we dared to direct our attention and time toward positive action? The world is slowly and messily becoming a better place. For example: A hundred years ago there was no (or little) concept of – or action on – things like children’s rights; women’s rights, including the right to vote; care for the environment (“you mean consumption makes stuff run out?”); fair pay and protections of labour (thank you Quakers). As leadership guru Simon Sinek says (and he knows some useful stuff): “Fight against something and we focus on the thing we hate. Fight FOR something and we focus on the thing we love.” When we stand back from the troubling

"SHAKING FISTS"

behaviours of suspect politicians (hey, they’re not all bad), footballer’s pay and the unsustainable burden on our education system - there is a new ttopic on more people’s lips than just ears ago: Mental health. And there is two ye no revverse gear on this awareness. The penny has dropped that physical health d mental health deserve parity in and orkplaces and schools. We are going wo nose to nose with the life-sapping n sstigma that asking for help means weakness”. To express emotion, “w uggle, distress – or just “be” with the stru easantness of poor mental health unple is courrage itself. For it is awareness, not denial. It is authentic, not pretense. It is to say “I am a human”. And from there, choices me available. becom Presently, for every single school classrroom in Bidford, Henley, Stratford, Alcester and right across the UK, on average 3 children are experiencing poor mental health (source: MHFA, 2016). Stuff like high anxiety and low moods, for valid reasons. Picture those 3 children in a class. So, let’s fight FOR positive mental health. This is what Lifespace is focused on: Children being heard. Help being present. Resilience being built. Helping the next generation discover that their mental health is real, a gift to look after not a shame to hide from. Isn’t this worth putting our hands in the air for and waving them proudly? This is why Lifespace now has a trained team of Youth Mental Health First Aiders to help raise awareness of what poor mental health looks and sounds like, and what every one of us can do to dismantle stigma and help the next generation flourish. Get in touch if your school or workplace want to know more. Join us in helping the world become a healthier place. And hey, Mr. Trump - this is REAL news. Chris Spriggs, founder Lifespace Trust

Experience the Magic of the Northern Lights, Get in touch with Carrick Travel to book your mesmerising Hurtigruten voyage.

No trip to the Arctic Circle is really complete during the winter months without experiencing the wonder of the Northern Lights and, most certainly, Northern Norway is one of the best places to see this phenomenon in all its glory.

F

or many people, seeing The Northern Lights is the main reason for their trip and on board a Hurtigruten voyage you are constantly ‘hunting the light’ as the ship sails within the Auroral Oval, which offers more and better chances of catching a glimpse of this spectacular light show. Flower Power by Pippa Greenwood Blooming Hollyhock Flower You can inexpensively and easily grow a huge range of flowers from seed at home. Just about every perennial flower is available to grow from seed, and once they have reached flowering size they’ll just keep on performing! There are lots to choose from, including lupins, silene, echinaceae, geranium, perennial poppies, delphiniums, gaillardia, hollyhocks, rudbeckia and salvia. Pay a visit to your local garden centre or use a seed catalogue and start planning; you could save a fortune, and all from a packet or two of seed. To start, you need containers to sow the seed into – I like to use half-sized seed trays, RootTrainers or smaller individual cells – and some good quality compost and your chosen seeds. It helps if you have something to tamp down the compost too, plus labels, a permanent marker, a dibber and some vermiculite (for covering seeds that need some light to germinate well). Sieve compost through a compost sieve to remove the larger lumps, leaving fine compost perfect for seed sowing. If you sieve it straight into the pots, cells or trays,

20 connectionmags.co.uk

make sure you collect up any that falls on the surface below. Once the compost is in the tray or pot, firm it down so that there are no large gaps beneath the surface, and level it off to make it easier to sow the seeds evenly and at the same depth. You can make your own tamper using a piece of wood with a small block of wood nailed to it to make a ‘handle’. It is easier to look after seedlings if the seed has been sown in straight rows; make the rows using a plastic plant label. Check the packets for the correct depths for the seeds, and if you are sowing seeds in small cells then it is easier to make the holes using a dibber (or a pencil if you don’t have one). RootTrainers are ideal for larger seeds such as sunflowers. Don’t sow too densely or the seedlings will need more thinning out and will be more likely to become drawn, leggy and weak. Once in place, just cover the seed with compost. If you are sowing larger seed into cells, just pop the seeds in to the prepared holes and cover to the required depth. Next, use a watering can with the rose attached and water

/theconnectionmag

thoroughly. If the seed sown was quite small, it is best to stand the tray in a shallow tray or bowl of water, so the compost absorbs water from below – this way the seeds are less likely to be displaced. Finally, label your seed trays clearly, ideally with a permanent marker. Many perennials need heat for the seed to germinate reliably. Put the trays, pots or cells into a propagator, standing each on moist capillary matting. Once the seedlings appear, gradually lower the temperature and then prick each one out into its own pot. Keep them fed and watered as they grow and in just a few weeks or months you will have some great plants ready for the garden. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com to buy gorgeous UK grown vegetable plants accompanied by weekly advice emails from Pippa, or to peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls for leather jackets, vine weevils and other pests, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

New Audi Q5

Replacing ultra-successful cars is never easy for a manufacturer. But when the model you’re refreshing has been at the top of the sales charts in its class for every single one of the years it has been on sale, that task becomes all the more difficult. And that’s the challenge Audi has faced with the Q5. The mid-sized model has been the brand’s best-selling SUV since it went on sale in 2008, finding an incredible 1.6 million homes across the world. This is the refreshed off-roader, charged with continuing that impressive feat. Built at the manufacturer’s most advanced ‘smart factory’ in Mexico, it’s been packed with clever technology, features revised engines and a fresh look that the maker hopes will continue to win over buyers. But has it done enough to steer buyers away from new pretenders to its crown, like the Jaguar F-Pace?

34 connectionmags.co.uk

Looks and image Well, it certainly has the looks. The new Q5 may be a little less flashy than its Jaguar rival, but that smart new octagonal nose, dramatic headlights and sharp body creases all serve to give it fantastic presence on the road. That’s helped by a wonderfully squat stance and perfect proportions. The only thing that jars is the fake exhaust-like trim on the rear bumper. Inside the quality is clear. Solid, good quality materials are everywhere and the leather seats, which are standard across the range, are comfortable and perfectly adjustable. It’s easy to get settled behind the wheel too, with plenty of space around the driver and logically placed controls for the fabulous multimedia system. There’s also a three-zone climate control system, an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system, and the optional virtual

/theconnectionmag

cockpit, which replaces the dials with a 12.3-inch high resolution display which can switch between dials or a full screen satnav display. space and practicaLity The new Q5 is bigger and wider than its predecessor – but still 90kg lighter. Inside there’s more headroom and rear knee-room, while boot space is up 10 litres to 550 litres with the rear seats in place and 1,550 litres with them down. Two adults will sit comfortably in the back, but a large transmission tunnel seriously eats into rear legroom for anything larger than a small child in the middle seat. Safety systems are plentiful, though. Buyers can opt for active lane assist, pre-sense assistance which helps detect if a crash is imminent and can apply the brakes for you, and cross-traffic assistance at the rear that will help when pulling out of parking spaces. moving traffic it’s even partly autonomous, slowing down and speeding up in jams while keeping you in your lane. What’s under the bonnet? There are three engine options to pick from – but the best seller, and our pick of the bunch, is the 187bhp, 400Nm, 2.0-litre TDI, which will account for 60 per cent of sales in the UK. This comes as standard with a clever new Quattro Ultra all-wheel drive system that can switch seamlessly between two and four-wheel drive automatically. This makes the car more efficient without losing out on traction. Fuel economy is 56.5mpg with emissions of 132g/km. It’s the quickest SUV in its class too, hitting 60mph in 7.7 seconds and going on to a top speed of 135mph. A 2.0-litre TFSI petrol

option with 250bhp is also available. It’s capable of returning 40.9mpg and emits 157g/km. A feisty 3.0-litre V6 TDi completes the lineup, producing 284bhp and a stonking 620Nm of torque. behind the WheeL The new Q5 is quite simply brilliant to drive. We tested the car on a variety of terrain, from motorways to cities and beaches to dirt tracks; it took them all in its stride. On the road it’s quiet, refined and accomplished, while in the grit it was surefooted and secure. The revised 2.0-litre diesel engine is punchy enough for a car of this size and works brilliantly when combined with the 7-speed S-tronic gearbox. We did find the automatic tripped itself up on a couple of occasions, stuttering a little as it looked for a gear, but overall

it’s by far and away the best choice of transmission. VaLue for money Audi has packed the Q5 with plenty of standard goodies including leather seats, a selfparking system, powered boot and a drive select system that lets you switch between sporty and more comfortable settings. Verdict Audi has moved the game on with its new Q5 but not ruined a recipe that has won it so many admirers. Stylish, comfortable and great to drive, it’s now packed with even more clever technology and features. With best in class performance and economy, and some highly tempting optional extras, we’d be very surprised if any of its rivals managed to usurp it at the top of the sales charts any time soon.

Back of the Net

We’ve all heard Jose Mourinho’s famous “parking the bus” quote but as we get into the ‘business end’ of the season the bus often seems to roll out of control. This has become more exaggerated since the start of the Premier League, with its gazillions of cash being pumped in to the top ‘one percent’ of clubs. And social media has added to the hysteria surrounding the game. The wheels fell off the lovely Mr Ranieri’s bus when he was sacked after a disappointing start to Leicester’s season, immediately after a creditable performance in Europe. Mind you, the club have improved somewhat since and the word now is that Craig Shakespeare was the glue in the relationship between players and manager. I heard someone on the radio this morning say that when a team is doing badly something has to be done and, as the players can’t be sacked, the manager has to go. So they move along the bus to be lauded as saviours of their next club.

38 connectionmags.co.uk

Hold very tight please and move along the bus

Consequently the managers at Derby and Nottingham Forest also had to go. As did the managers at so many other clubs. I can’t help wondering whether players at the top level ever have a feeling that they are not performing to the best of their ability, perhaps not being worth their millions a year. The system seems to be overwhelmingly in their favour. Yet supporters still turn up in their droves to cheer or lambast them. Even Arsene Wenger, with twenty successful years and multiple trophies, is being heavily criticised by many suppporters who ‘need’ their club to be in the top one, not the top four, every season. Football is a simple game. Isn’t it? Of course it has always been a business too; it has to be. But big business has taken it over, in too many cases to its detriment. Too little space dictates I stop here, which is good because I could depress you all, as well as myself, with the way the game is being led, . Till next month ... ... Back of the net!

Lake Atitlan Guatemala By Solange Hando In the central highlands of Guatemala, ‘the most beautiful lake in the world’ shimmers at the foot of mighty volcanoes, its crystal-clear waters constantly changing from emerald and blue to turquoise or aquamarine. It’s the deepest lake in Central America, created some 85,000 years ago by a massive volcanic eruption.

colourful frenzy, but for much of the year the shore is quiet, dotted with hidden gems like San Pedro La Laguna and its hot baths, or Santa Cruz set among verdant peaks and ravines and challenging trails climbing into the hinterland. Here and there a mountain road comes down to the water but none circle the lake.

Today, new volcanoes mingle their reflections along the south shore: San Pedro, seemingly extinct, Toliman, a sleeping giant, and at 3,535 metres Volcan Atitlan, the highest, which last erupted in 1853. At dawn, when the first fishermen cast their nets in the reeds and barely a ripple disturbs the water, it’s almost surreal, but by late morning the Pacific breeze whips up the waves to clear the air and ‘carry away sin.’

In the Sierra Madre rising above Lake Atitlan, the road leads to Chichicastenango, a bustling town where the Maya speak K’iche, one of 23 ethnic languages in Guatemala. Their traditional shrine nestles among the pines up on the crest while below, the church beckons at the top of 18 steps, each one symbolising a month in the Maya calendar. With its cobbled streets and red tiled roofs, ‘Chichi’ has a touch of magic and, twice a week, the market spills down the lanes in a head-spinning kaleidoscope of colours, sounds and scents. Clad in vibrant Maya dress, the locals wait for custom while the tourists shuffle around, bewildered by the stunning hand-woven textiles, the ritual masks, the tiny crib figures, the roses, the lilies, the dried fish from the lake and the fruit of the land. All around, the slopes are

It’s a blessing for the devout Maya who live in colourful villages scattered along the shore, worshipping both Christian and indigenous gods. Most fearsome is Maximon whose shrine is set up in a different house every year in Santiago Atitlan, just steps away from the church and the alleyways brimming with embroidered clothes. At festival time, the village bursts into a

laced with avocado orchards, small coffee plantations and generous patches of maize, the Maya’s staple diet and, they say, a life-giving gift from the gods. Meanwhile, at just over 1,560 metres, the lake glistens in the cusp of the hills. Boats set sail now and then, gliding around an island, heading to a village or ferrying a handful of visitors within arm’s reach of the volcanoes. Most stay in the pretty resort of Panajachel on the north-east bank, where red tuk-tuks rattle down a ‘high street’ lined with outdoor eateries and stalls full of bags, hammocks and shawls in dazzling colours. There’s a small promenade draped in palms and bougainvillaea, thatched restaurants perched on stilts at the water’s edge, and a handful of boats bobbing at anchor along rickety pontoons. There’s no better place to watch the sunset as the sky turns deep pink and gold and the dark silhouettes of the volcanoes loom eerily above the water. In these mystical highlands, at the heart of Guatemala, legends come to life and you can almost see the lost city lying deep down at the bottom of Atitlan.

Bluebells, Bronze Sculptures & Woodland Walks By Toby Fisher – Heart of England Forest

W

e love spring in the Heart of England Forest. As hibernating wildlife ventures out once again, trees are in blossom and leaf, the evenings grow longer and migratory animals return. The tree planting season has just reached an end and, having planted a record number of new saplings over the last four months, we now hope the spring conditions will hasten their healthy growth.

An ambitious vision For those of you not familiar with England’s largest new native woodland, the Heart of England Forest, a charity founded by the late publisher and poet Felix Dennis, is committed to rolling back the decline in our broadleaf woodland. Felix was obsessed by trees and acutely aware that our native forests were disappearing, stripping our country of its natural beauty and wildlife. With the UK having one of the lowest percentages of native tree cover anywhere in Europe, he forged an ambitious vision to help do something about it. In 1996, having lived in south Warwickshire for nearly 10 years, he set about planting trees in earnest, using the wealth he made in publishing to buy the land needed. Sixteen years later, he proudly planted his one millionth tree, meaning that when he passed away in the summer of 2014 he had already set about bringing his extraordinary vision to create a 30,000 acre forest to life, a legacy that will benefit generations to come. This new forest containing over 20 native tree

species including oak, birch, hornbeam, field maple and hazel, has wide rides, meandering footpaths, flower meadows, leafy glades and is growing right here in your neighbourhood, beginning to stretch out across south Warwickshire and Worcestershire. This transformation of the landscape is already creating habitats, allowing wildlife to thrive and benefiting the natural environment. Now having planted over 1.5 million trees covering 3,500 acres, and protecting a further 600 acres of existing mature and ancient woodland, good progress has been made so far.

Woodland Walks & Talks But it’s not just for the wildlife. With five car parks, way marked walking routes and over 10 miles of maintained pathways, the Heart of England Forest really is a wonderful place for everyone. Somewhere to get away from everyday life, go on an adventure with the children, walk your dog or just relax and unwind. It’s waiting to be explored and

enjoyed by you, your family and friends. Why not join one of the monthly guided walks, a two-hour stroll around the woodland held on a Saturday, giving you the chance to learn about the trees, wildlife and work we do and ask questions from the team member leading you as you go. For something slightly more energetic, why not try Nordic Walking. In May we have a taster session with a qualified instructor, taking place in the Forest, or for some serious exercise, in September we host a walking marathon.

advance not only offer a saving, but allow early access to avoid the crowds. Best of all, it will be raising funds to help grow and maintain more woodland.

Bronzed heroes set to welcome you

Bluebells spring to life Walks and other fundraising events take place throughout the spring and summer, giving you plenty of reasons to get out and about in the great outdoors. Nothing truly says spring like the sight and smell of bluebells. Each year we open up the usually private ancient woodland in Spernal so visitors can admire its carpet of blue flowers. This year our open weekend takes place on the 29th & 30th of April. It really is a sight to behold and a m musst for any keen photographer. Tickets p purchased in

The ever-popular Garden of Heroes & Villains is open again this year on the 27th May. This stunning sculpture garden commissioned by our founder has over 50 of history’s greats immortalised in bronze, a yew hedge maze and poetry shard garden providing a unique day out for the whole family. There is also the opportunity to meet members of the forestry team, learn about the work they are doing, and enjoy refreshments served on the courtyard with all money being raised benefitting the Heart of England Forest. These are exciting times for the Heart of England Forest, and there is quite simply no better time to visit. For further information and tickets for these events and more, visit: www.heartofenglandforest.com/events We look forward to updating you on progress in future editions of this magazine and welcoming you to the woodland soon.

Goodbye old friend

Although a woman of no great means, she was always ready to help anyone in need and there are many stories of her kindness and caring nature.

Elma Harvey, a resident of Marlcliff for nearly sixty years, passed away on the 4th February. Besides being a stalwart of Marlcliff, Elma (known to many as Alma) was very well known to the many dog walkers from Bidford and the surrounding villages, who loved to stop and have a chat with her on their way.

Throughout her years Elma raised an incredible amount of money for charity, being a prolific knitter, and people from miles around would arrive with wool for her to transform into blankets, hats and scarves for children in need from near and far. She also collected stamps and helped raise money for a swimming pool for blind children. Children adored Elma and she loved them in return, always interested in how they were getting on and what they were up to.

The high attendance at Elma’s funeral, which took place at St Andrews in Cleeve Prior, was a reflection of the high regard and love people had for her. Friends and neighbours raised £300 for a floral tribute, and £325 was donated to The Acorn Children’s Hospices in her name, one of Elma’s favourite charities. Elma would have been absolutely flabbergasted at the turn out for her funeral, and also the generosity of her friends and neighbours, which was a mark of the great respect they had for her. Marcliff will not be the same without her.
