Welcome

... to the May Connection.

Well, I have to say that this past month has not been an easy one. Finding food-related content to coincide with Alcester’s Food Festival hasn’t been difficult, but seeing all the amazing food on our doorstep (figuratively speaking) has made me feel constantly hungry! I’ve been salivating at pictures of poached eggs, asparagus, rhubarb tarts, decadent butchers’ counters, crusty bread, and hot-smoked pulled pork baps. Thankfully, I managed not to dribble onto my laptop and lose all of my work, 01527 503030 but can now present you with ten pages of lovely food. 205831 There’s a rhubarb tart recipe (p.10), asparagus recipes 01926 495321 (p.16), contributions from local nutritionist Esther MillsRoberts (p.18), we hear about life at Oaks Barn Farm (p.12), details of the upcoming Food Festival (p.14), a Tapas evening at Osco’s (p.19) as well as a special 999 or 112 competition to win a £50 voucher to spend at The Golden 444816 Cross (p.15). 08008 00151 Talking of food (although, granted, not in the same vein), 08004 04090 my poor kitchen has recently been receiving unwelcome 08001 11999 visitors in the slimy form of slugs. It really is rather revolting for us and, might I add, traumatising (have you ever accidentally trodden on one, barefoot?!). If you have 0300 555 8171 similar issues, then quick, turn to our Gardening article 773239 (p.20). I certainly intend to fill a trolley with copper tape! 0844 855 2322 There’s no excuses for boredom this month. So much 07771 616189 to read and do. Be sure to turn to Chris Spriggs’ last, 766750 rather poignant ‘Lifespace Speaks’ (p.8), congratulate 762450 Bidford Pharmacy on their Healthy Living certification (p.43), catch up on Bidford Chamber’s events for the 766200 coming months (p.26), find out about the latest Escape 270744 01386 871777 Arts programme (p.59), as well as fundraisers with GAGA (p.50) and Alcester Alauna Rotary (p.57). And, as usual, 763117 our Community pages have even more listings (p.56 & 58). On top of all that, keep an eye on our social media 762285 accounts for some foodie posts over the coming weeks! 762494 Until next month... 762888 773201 762444 Facebook.com/theconnectionmag 772200 Twitter.com/connection_mag 488247 Connnection circulation 7,650 (and rising) 488211 Editor: Amy James Phone 01789 491005 762555 Email: info@connectionmags.co.uk 772497 www.connectionmags.co.uk 762578 Printed by Warwick Printing Ltd 01926 883355 772384 763060 763293 773372 111 08457 909090

Lifespace Speaks

''ENDINGS, BEGINNINGS''

“The end is where we start from” - T.S. Eliot

He said my name, twice. “Do you remember me?” he asked. I looked up from my cup of tea. It took some moments to not stare at the lacerations on his arms, fresh scabs on a wrist outstretched toward me in greeting, telling a story to the outside world about what had been unfolding on the inside of him over recent months. “Yes, of course I do”, I said, noticing the juxtaposition of the sparkle in his eyes to his injured arms. “What are you up to these days?” I asked. He smiled, then explained how things were working out better now he was educated at home. He talked of his plans for college, intentions about a career. Now I understood the sparkle. He sensed a beginning. After so much adversity, hope remained. “I’m sorry we never got to say goodbye at school” he said, suddenly clutching his wrist. We’d worked together for several years; he’d come through many difficult things and he was so near to the finish line of his GCSEs. Then I heard one day from school he had left. Attempts to make contact with him via school and ‘end well’ came to nothing. Research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation revealed the importance of ending well in mentoring relationships. When a ‘clean end’ occurs - simple things like a handshake, words of appreciation, awareness of what has changed and objectives achieved, perhaps a smile and a farewell - such a clean ending helps consolidate internally what has been learned and becomes a deposit of resilience for the future. However, when the ending is sudden, ignored or forced (“oh, the funding has been pulled”) the value of good work done can be diminished. It’s one of the tricky things Lifespace mentors have to navigate. In life generally, some things are within one’s power, many things are not. With beginnings we often think we are in control, either to initiate the new thing (“let’s start a family!”) or to respond to an opportunity (“look at this job advert!”). Beginnings

are by their nature smaller than endings, but the acorn and the oak tree that come from it are irreversibly connected. Beginnings are easier to miss, endings are harder to ignore. Does our culture prefer the optimism of beginnings (the new job, the new home, the new whatever…), to the rigour of ending well? We have much to learn about ending well, wherever we can, whenever we can. The clock ticks. Sometimes we don’t get second chances. But on this occasion, on my birthday, sat alone in a café, there he stood, arm outstretched like a gift. “I came over to say thank you for all the ways you helped me”, he said. To me it hadn’t felt enough. One day I’ll wise up and realise I’m not responsible for everything. “You’re welcome”, I said. There was quiet. We shook hands, our eyes smiled. We may never see each other again, but such tiny moments of ending well are precious. Endings, beginnings. Life is woven with the constant transitions we are in, and they require our attention. For we all long to be able to say, “ah yes, that was the time when…” and smile as we recline, cup of tea in hand and tell the story, “ah yes… “ and for there to be joy in the telling, the fragility of hope rekindled.

Endings: This is my final contribution to ‘Lifespace Speaks’. In the coming months my attention will be drawn ever deeper into my Master of Arts dissertation (on the topic of the resiliency of young people, if you’re curious). Books are already stacked by my bedside, scribblings from interviews are splayed across the carpet. By September I will smell of paper. I hope I will unearth something useful and generative for the wider world. Indeed, throughout, a young man with scarred arms and a sparkle in his eyes will be at the forefront of my mind. Chris Spriggs, founder Lifespace Trust

You’re invited to support our mentoring work with local young people – Visit www.lifespace.org.uk and click ‘Help Us’ or call us on 01789 297400. A gift of £3 a month gives a young person facing distress an hour of quality attention and help. Human contact: 01789 297400

From Field to Fork

S

Not “The Good Life” but we are getting pretty close.

et in the Heart of Shakespeare’s Rural England, Oaks Barn Farm Quality Farm Stay Experience sets out to offer its guests the chance to participate in rural life. Whether it be feeding the pigs, sheep or chickens, clearing out the pens or helping with bottle feeding of lambs, the opportunities are ever present. Interestingly, working closely with guests on the farm, we find that society has become more detached from the food they eat, typically asking, “how can you feed something so cute then eat it?” Our response is for that exact same reason; bringing something into this world, caring for it, nursing it when required and feeding daily is far better than picking up a tray of unknown meat from a supermarket. If more people played an active role in the food they consume, their growth in knowledge would increase and their food waste would reduce significantly. It’s spring on the farm, the orchard is busy displaying its blossom, the barn is full of ewes, each in pens with lambs at foot, it’s a magical time of new life and this year has been particularly good with 57% of our ewes delivering triplets. Whilst this may sound idyllic, the reality of having to supplement the feed every four hours has to be a passion and vocation. The grass is lush green and, most importantly, growing, delivering the goodness which keeps the milk flowing, giving our lambs the best possible start. We sell our lambs to a growing base of repeat customers who buy our meat for the flavour and welfare standards achieved on the farm. In addition, we now offer BBQ packs to our guests wanting full flavoured meat during their farm stay experience. Typically, lambs born on the farm during March/April will live on the farm until September, where they will achieve a weight of around 22 kilos. We also have both Saddleback and Gloucester Old Spot Pigs on the farm, which are reared for traditional pork joints and outstanding sausages. These sell particularly well to our guests who buy to eat during their stay and often end up taking some home for the freezer. We are fortunate enough to be able to grow all of our own vegetables on the farm and in the orchard, which is now 10 years old and provides enough fruit for both our own consumption and that of our visiting guests, with surplus going to feed the chickens, pigs

and sheep. They say that the best time to plant a tree was yesterday. That said, there is no greater satisfaction than eating an apple on a crisp autumn morning straight from the tree you planted years ago. So are we self sufficient? Not completely. Like most farms, we have had to diversify; we generate approximately one third of our electricity from solar panels on the barn and have installed a wood pellet biomass boiler to reduce our dependance on fossil fuel. This now heats and provides hot water to the farm house, The Coach House and Granary. Typically we find that families are keen to get out in the countryside whilst not wanting to forgo any of their home from home comforts. To this end we provide free wifi, which is available in both properties and also to outside areas. Last year the farm was shortlisted in the British Farming Awards under the category of digital innovation for our organic growth through social media. Much of our repeat business is generated through our engagement of existing and new guests to the farm through Twitter, Facebook and other social platforms. So, our plans for the future: well, in May we are due to be married, and some of our pork will definitely be on the table. Our Farm Stay grows year on year and new for this summer we are taking delivery of a Salt Water Hot Tub which will be linked to the larger of our two properties. Exciting times ahead...

Asparagus “Tips” We’re lucky to live in an area famed for its asparagus farming, and now is the time to enjoy this fresh, tasty and local ingredient. Try steaming, griddling or pan frying in olive oil before serving with butter, lemon juice and an oozing poached egg. Or you could try one of these delicious recipes to really show off.

7

Sprinkle over the last 10g of Parmesan and slide the frying pan in to the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the frittata is golden and firm.

Asparagus Frittata

Serves 4-6 • Ready in 30 mins 275g new potatoes 450g asparagus 5 large eggs 200g buffalo mozzarella 50g Parmesan, grated 2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley 2 tbsp olive oil Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

8

Asparagus Bruschettas Makes 6 • Ready in 20 mins

1

Preheat the oven to 200°C/ gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted water.

2

Trim the asparagus, then cut the stems into 1cm slices leaving the spear as a piece about 8cm long. Add this all to the potato pan for the last 5 minutes of the cooking time.

3 4

Drain everything and refresh in cold water. Thickly slice the potato.

Serve straight from the pan with a crisp green salad.

pepper

12 fresh asparagus spears, trimmed 6 thin slices crusty bread (such as sour dough) 6 tbsp good quality olive oil 1 large garlic clove, halved 225g (8oz) goats’ cheese Handful of rocket leaves Salt and freshly ground black

1

Half fill a large frying pan with water and bring to the boil. Add the asparagus spears and simmer for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water.

Whisk together the eggs really well. Dice the mozzarella and add to the eggs along with 40g of the Parmesan, the parsley, potatoes and slices of asparagus. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Stir everything to coat with the egg. Lastly, gently stir through the spears.

2

Heat a 22cm diameter oven-proof deep frying pan along with the olive oil over a medium heat. Non-stick would be great, otherwise one which is naturally seasoned.

Rub the cut garlic cloves all over the hot toasts (this imparts a mild garlic flavour to the toasts). Spread the goats’ cheese over the toasts.

5 6

Pour in the egg mixture making sure some of the spears are sitting at the top. Leave to cook for around 10 minutes until the edges are starting to firm up.

Brush the slices of bread on both sides with some of the olive oil. Place the slices on a hot cast-iron griddle pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until just crisp and lightly charred in places. If you don’t have a griddle pan then simply grill the toasts.

3 4

Arrange the asparagus spears on top of the cheese and add a few rocket leaves to each. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately.

Enjoy local asparagus, cut fresh daily, from

Great Nutrition I

in The Vale

followed a truck of asparagus…stacked high, leaning over, daring the roundabout to do its worst. That morning, people in Bidford were talking about whether they could smell coriander, and I was grateful to live in an area that celebrates horticulture, fresh, organic and home-grown. You see, to me, it’s a place of opportunity. Locked inside these biological power-packages we call fruits and vegetables, are a plethora of health substances to keep us healthy - not just water, fibre and key vitamins and minerals, but phytonutrients too…

…and phytonutrients pack a real biological punch. Contained within a host of plant produce, the easiest way to up your dietary intakes is to eat three different coloured fruits, and five different coloured vegetables each day. Diversity will ensure that you have good intakes of key phytonutrients, such as: Carotenoids: There are over 600 of them, and provide yellow, orange and red colours to fruits and vegetables. As well as being powerful antioxidants, they can be converted to vitamin A in the body, for skin, immune system and eye health. Lycopene, which became well known for helping prostate health, is found in tomatoes, watermelon and pink grapefruit, whilst lutein and zeaxanthin, found in spinach and kale, can help reduce incidence of age-related macular degeneration. Ellagic Acid: This is found in many different berries, including blackberries, strawberries and raspberries. It is great for all-round health, due to its antioxidant properties. Quercetin: is a well-studied type of phytonutrient called a flavonol. It’s found in apples, berries, kale and onions, and can help people manage asthma, and maintain a healthy heart.

18 connectionmags.co.uk

by Esther Mills-Roberts

Resveratrol: Found in grapes and wine, an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. As well as local and fresh, you can eat frozen and tinned (in juice) – and don’t feel bad about it. Research has shown that those who eat ten portions a day are less likely to be overweight and have good heart, immune, digestive and skin health. What’s more, searching out new fruits and vegetables is a great chance to spend time with family. Why not go fruit-picking, make some apple and blueberry muffins, try out new vegetables, visit a farm-shop or even try growing your own.

Note: Of course, not everyone finds eating lots of fruits and vegetables easy. Certain conditions such as digestive complaints, reflux or poor appetite might mean that you struggle to achieve recommendations. In this case, a Registered Nutritionist can help to improve your diet as well as recommend appropriate supplements. They can also help manage specific health conditions via a nutritional approach. Esther Mills-Roberts is a degree-trained nutritional biochemist. She is a Registered Nutritionist (8445), Fellow of the Institute for Optimum and member of the Guild of Health Writers. She has a private practice and can be contacted by email: esthermillsroberts@outlook.com or by phone: 07834 227677 (please leave a message, if in consultations).

Slug Survival by Pippa Greenwood

Whether your garden is big or small, or you have just a few planters in a back yard or on a balcony, the chances are that slugs will cause you grief. There are about thirty species of slug in the UK and most feed throughout the year, especially after dark and when the soil is wet or moist – and now that spring is here, they’re out in force! However, most slugs actually do little damage to living plants, instead preferring to feast on dead and dying material. Typically it is smaller slugs like the greyish-black keeled slug and the pinkish-beige-grey field slug which are more likely to wreak havoc. With estimates of there being about 200 slugs per average cubic metre of average garden soil, the situation can soon get out of hand. Keeled slugs in particular love to feast below ground, as well as on plants above the soil surface. In no time at all slugs can eat through the base of a young stem, killing the plant in the process, or eat seedlings even before they have had a chance to emerge above the soil surface! Later in the year, they will begin to tunnel into potato tubers and carrots too. They breed quickly and very efficiently, and you’re most likely to spot the clumps of

20 connectionmags.co.uk

eggs on the soil surface, beneath flopped foliage and amongst moist organic matter. Each egg is about 1-2mm in diameter and a clear, milky or off-white coloured sphere. So what can you do with these squidgy little menaces? • Go on an evening slug hunt, in particular after it has rained or you have done some watering. • Choose vegetable varieties which have useful resistance to slugs. With potatoes, main crop varieties usually suffer most, so try to grow mainly earlies. Choose varieties such as Charlotte, Kestrel, Sante or Wilja to give a better chance of success. • Encourage natural predators such as hedgehogs, frogs, toads, slow worms and ground beetles. If you keep hens consider letting them clear the ground for you – but obviously only before you start planting and sowing! • Use the Nemaslug nematode control, a treatment I like because it is harmless to everything except slugs. It works swiftly and silently too and, if you’re a potato grower and you drench the soil around the potato plants about six weeks before anticipated harvest, the nematodes soon get to work

/theconnectionmag

and your potatoes should be virtually slug-damage free. Use it to clear a slug-infested raised bed or planter and apply self-adhesive copper tape around the rim of the container to keep the contents slug free. Find out more about Nemaslug and copper tape at www.pippagreenwood.com/ products/protect-your-crops. • Barriers such as crushed shells, wool pellets, soot, pine needles or copperimpregnated fabric can also work well, but may need replacing regularly and results seem to vary. • Traps filled with beer can reduce slug numbers in your garden dramatically. You can buy ready-made traps or make your own using inexpensive plastic beakers plunged into the soil, the rim protruding 1-2cm above the soil surface and filled with a well-flavoured beer. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com to buy gorgeous UK grown vegetable plants accompanied by weekly advice emails from Pippa, or to peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

BMW M760Li xDrive

Those of you hoping this was BMW’s M7 need to look away now. Although this may be the fastest BMW ever made, if you’re after a firebreathing, full-blooded M car, the M760Li will leave you a little disappointed. BMW says that’s because this is a car for buyers with something of a split personality. One moment they may be keen on a country road assault so they can enjoy the glorious V12, the next they might want to kick back and relax in the massaging seats and just cruise along. LOOks And iMAge The 7 Series has long been a luxury choice for the type of buyer who still enjoys driving, though – and the M760Li is the epitome of that. With several driving modes to choose from, sporty drivers are well catered for when its sport setting is active. With the comfort setting it’s mellower, more relaxed, it eases over bumps and floats along beautifully. The looks of the M760Li won’t be for everyone but inside is a

34 connectionmags.co.uk

wonderful place to spend time. For those who are chauffeured the back seats are arguably more comfortable than up front. There are multimedia screens to enjoy, cushioned headrests and massaging, reclining seat backs. spAce And prAcTicALiTy The 7 Series does feel a little smaller in the rear than rivals from Mercedes and Audi, though. Up front the driving position is a little cosseting too, but it’s easy to get comfortable. WhAT’s under The BOnneT? BMW made a lot of noise about it being 30 years since they installed a V12 engine in their 7 Series at the launch. Since then, the 12-cylinder lump has doubled in power: the 2017 6.6-litre unit boasts a whopping 601bhp, a staggering 800Nm of torque and is capable of propelling it to 60mph in just 3.6 seconds. That gives it the impressive title of the fastest accelerating BMW ever made, but you’ll pay at the pumps; the M760Li will return 22.1mpg and emits 294g/km.

/theconnectionmag

Behind The WheeL The BMW is a true Jekyll and Hyde car with distinct personalities behind the wheel. On the track it was incredibly swift and that V12 makes a pleasingly sound and, while there may be some body roll, it’s not too intrusive. It’s all helped by four-wheel drive that has a rear wheel drive bias when needed. The steering is a little light in the comfort setting, though, but flick it into sport and it’s far better. VALue fOr MOney For £132,310, you do get some goodies thrown in. Lightweight 20-inch alloys, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and Car Play are included, as is an Advanced Parking System, adaptive LED headlights, a head-up display, and massaging seats. There’s even rear-seat entertainment and a panoramic glass sunroof provided too. There’s also an extensive options list, including night vision and BMW laser headlights. VerdicT The fact BMW perseveres with a V12 is a revelation. With downsizing the current buzzword, it seems hard to believe that a manufacturer would launch a 6.6-litre petrol drinking lump. Although the market for it will be small, we’re still very glad it has. OK, so this might not be the M7 that many performance BMW fans crave, but it’s as close to it as we’re going to get. It’s great fun to drive, sumptuously luxurious and wonderfully relaxing when you want it to be - and all in, a very competent and exciting 7 Series indeed.

Back of the Net

Whether you support the Blues of Chelsea or Birmingham City, the remaining handful of games will be crucial as to whether or not your season is successful. Of course, what Chelsea will call success differs somewhat from the point of view at St Andrews. Chelsea, having been hot favourites for the Premiership title for many months, have slipped up recently, leaving the door open for Tottenham, whose form has taken a turn in the opposite direction, scoring 22 goals in winning their last seven league games. Meanwhile, down at the bottom of the Championship, the Blues of Brum are attempting to keep alive their hopes of survival in said league and, having sacked an ‘unfashionable’ manager earlier in the season, who had the club knocking on the door of promotion, only to replace him with a ‘fashionable’ name, who now has them knocking on the door of relegation, they have turned to old Mr Redknapp in a last ditch attempt to save face and their place. Of course, Harry is a past master in this kind of situation, so it would

It’s squeaky bum time for the two Blues!

seem to be a good choice, although, perhaps, not as good a choice as not sacking Gary Rowett in the first place. Harry starts with a game at Villa then has two more equally difficult, albeit less emotionally charged, games to get the four points he believes will keep Blues safe. I hope he turns them around but it will be close. For what it’s worth I don’t think Chelsea will lose it, particularly with remaining fixtures seemingly in their favour. As for other local sides, Albion must be feeling quite dizzy in their current elevated position, which could account for their recent drop in form. Villa have to be disappointed with their season and Coventry only have the Checkatrade Trophy to drink from to drown their season’s woes after dropping to the fourth tier. I know we have a few Cheltenham Town fans locally who will be hoping their team can stay in League Two, which would be some success, having only been promoted last season. Enjoy what’s left of the season and here’s to the next one! Till next time ... Back of the net!

What's New At Coughton Court

S

pring is the perfect time to get the whole family together and go on an adventure over to Coughton’s ancient woodland, where the Treason Trail is waiting to be explored. The trail is based on the events of the Gunpowder Plot and children can grab a hobby horse from the Welcome Centre to gallop across the fields, pretend to be royalty on the oversized throne, take their photo with our Guy Fawkes wanted posters and make up a tune on our wooden xylophone. Eight story panels will guide you around the woodland where you’ll learn the story of the plotters, explore the pieces of natural play and, most importantly, have fun in the great outdoors! Whilst you’re over in the woodland get out your 50 Things booklet and start ticking off some of those activities, such as hunting for bugs and making a trail with sticks. Don’t forget to pause on the bridge over the River Arrow and play a couple of rounds of Pooh Sticks with a willing opponent. Pick up some of our Explorer Cards and discover some of the sights and sounds of Coughton outside in the gardens and grounds, and take a stroll down the Gentleman’s Walk to see what birds you can spot on Westminster Pool; there may even be a few ducklings.

If you fancy going on a walk, pick up one of our walk cards from Visitor Reception, and explore Kinwarton Dovecote and Timm’s Grove or pick up our Curious Coughton walk to find out more about the site and its place in history. May Half Term Sat 27 May - Sun 4 June, 11am - 4pm Joing us for family fun this May half term, with outdoor games, and see how many of our 50 things to do before you’re 113/4 you can tick off.

The Duck Race Sun 18 June, Thurs 27 July & Thurs 10 August 11am - 4pm Celebrate Father’s Day and the summer holidays by getting all of the family together to sponsor a duck on Coughton’s traditional duck race down by the River Arrow, plus traditional games for families. For full opening days & more information please visit: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ coughtoncourt or call 01789 400777 Follow us on Twitter @NTCoughton or ‘Like’ us at www.facebook.com/CoughtonCourt

If it’s a nice sunny day try an ice-cream, made by a local company, before relaxing while the children play with the games on the lawn and in the activity shed.
