April showers bring May flowers, or so they say. I wonder, then, what all that snow in March will bring us this month? I hope you all managed to stay safe and warm and didn’t get caught in any of those crazy snow drifts? Anyway, here’s to springtime, whenever it finally decides to show its face! This month kicks off with Easter Sunday, which coincides with April Fool’s Day. For any particularly naughty parents, perhaps try sending your children on an egg hunt, but neglect to mention that you haven’t actually hidden any. As our front cover hints, it’s all going on in Alcester and Bidford just lately. As well as all the usual community groups and events (p.56,58), you can read more about Alcester Town Hall’s 400th birthday (p.38), the Bidford Banner group (p.18) and Alcester Bowls club’s open day (p.16). I really love getting emails and phone calls to request space for community groups and the like. It’s a great reminder of the fantastic area we live in. And, in case you needed further prompting about our wonderful surroundings, The Heart of England Forest have written a piece telling us more about the nature on our doorstep. They even have some group walks coming up, so get your diaries ready (p.48). If you’re still feeling sluggish following the cold winter months, Esther Mills-Roberts’ article on energy-boosting nutrition is worth a read (p.28), or turn to Christopher Spriggs’ monthly offering if you need to de-stress (p.14). Our recipe (p.10) this month is for delicious spice-crusted, baked salmon fillets. We’ve noticed people taking photos when they try our recipes, and sharing them to social media, which has been great to see! Finally, as we went to print this morning, we heard the sad news of Stephen Hawking’s passing, so we’ll finish here with his sound advice to “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet...” Until next month,

Dreaming of The Maldives? Make your dream a reality with

CARRICK TRAVEL

T

he Maldives is a myriad of little islands straddling the equator, where the sands are as white as the smiles of the locals, where fish swim happily in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, where the weather is a dream and where the warm rays of the sun await. Each island resort is reached by speedboat or seaplane and is blessed with relatively deserted beaches of the softest powderwhite sand and is surrounded by shallow, yet brilliant blue, lagoons and colourful coral reefs. Below the ocean is a unique world waiting to be discovered, a kaleidoscope of over 900 species of exotic fish, turtles, sharks, dolphins, whales and manta rays a haven for divers. Exclusive island hideaways with beach or overwater villas and award-winning spas are the perfect honeymoon escape, while a wide variety of water sports offer activities for the whole family to enjoy.

The Maldives is comprised of 26 natural atolls consisting of dual island chains. Incidentally the Maldivian language has the distinct pleasure of contributing to the English word “atoll”, which was derived from the Maldivian word “atholhu”. Islands vary in size and each has its own unique attributes, the larger island resorts offering extensive activities, leisure facilities and dining options. The smaller islands are true havens of tranquillity with a “no news, no shoes” approach to daily life. The airport is located on Hulhule Island in the North Male Atoll, near the capital island Male where a fleet of sea planes and speedboats are waiting to whisk you to your tropical island retreat. There are direct flights from London during the Winter months with British Airways (10hrs 20mins) and a

STRATFORD-UPON-AVON 01789 414040

wide range of other flight options available with award winning airlines such as Emirates, Etihad and Qatar amongst others. The Maldives is a great destination to visit all year round, but the best weather with little rain, low humidity and blue skies can be found between December and February. The good weather continues in March and April and kicks off the surf season, which lasts until October. Storms and rain are most likely between May and November, however the weather is still warm and the marine life is most varied at this time. Mix together the spices and rub over the surface of the salmon fillets. Season with a little salt. Place the salmon pieces in a foil-lined roasting tin. Be Happy With a Book Whether you love curling up with a psychological thriller or prefer biographies, enjoy flicking through a cookbook or need business advice, we’ve got just the book to keep you and your e-reader happy. How Not To Be a Boy – Robert Webb Actor and comedian Robert Webb has turned his hand to writing, with great success. How Not To Be a Boy is part biography, part reflection on the expectations that are put on boys and men to act a certain way. Webb reveals his grief at losing his mother and his difficult relationship with his father, and ruminates on how trying to ‘act like a man’ has had a negative effect on his life. Through it all, Webb writes with his trademark humour, taking the reader from laughing out loud to blinking back tears in moments. The History of Bees – Maja Lunde The History of Bees tells the stories of three people, all connected by bees. In 1851, William is attempting to build a revolutionary beehive to bring honour and fame to his family. In 2007, George is struggling to keep the family bee farm going. Almost 100 years later, Tao is enjoying a rare day off from her job hand-pollinating fruit trees, when her son is taken seriously ill. The History of Bees was a surprise international bestseller last year and is ideal for fans of dystopian fiction.

12 connectionmags.co.uk

Anything You Do Say – Gillian McAllister A split second decision has lasting implications for the protagonist in this tense psychological thriller. Late at night, believing that she’s being followed, Joanna lashes out, pushing her pursuer down a set of concrete steps. Does she call an ambulance, or walk away? Both scenarios are then explored. Ingenious, original and fast-paced, this is perfect for fans of Gone Girl and Girl on a Train. The Paying Guests – Sarah Waters It’s 1922, but the roaring twenties have yet to reach the quiet corner of London where Frances and her mother live. Frances has resigned herself to a life spent looking after the family home, but the arrival of lodgers Lilian and Leonard Barber reawakens her life, energy and passions. Paying Guests was published in 2014 and was named ‘Fiction Book of the Year’ by The Sunday Times, for good reason. A modern classic, it’s beautifully written, with believably flawed characters, plot twists and a building tension that’ll keep you reading ‘just one more chapter’ until late into the night.

/theconnectionmag

Ultimate Fit Food – Gordon Ramsay Planning to get a bit fitter before the summer? Gordon Ramsey’s latest book might help. It’s split into three sections, each of which offers a range of dishes to promote general wellbeing, achieve weight loss or provide fuel for work-outs. There are recipes for everything from healthy snacks and breakfasts to impressive main courses, and plenty of treats are included too. The emphasis is on dishes so delicious you’ll almost forget they’re good for you. Start Me Up – Various If you’re thinking of setting up your own business, take advice and inspiration from people who’ve done just that. Enterprise Nation is a website for small businesses and has recently released a free ebook. Start Me Up features stories from 100 entrepreneurs, including the owner of Cool Cold Brew, which will soon be available in Sainsbury’s, and the founder of the fastest growing baby food brand in the UK. You can download Start Me Up from the blog at www. enterprisenation.com.

Turning Points

C

an you remember a positive turning point in your life? That sense of “yesterday it was like such-and-such, but today it’s like THIS!” When you knew there was no going back? Perhaps it was a decision you made, a person you met, a brave step you took? Once those two neurons in your brain met for the first time - Tada! - it couldn’t be undone. By its very nature, a turning point can seem tiny - it’s just “a single point in time”. But so much can turn upon so little. Think about it: ALL of life begins small - whether human or in nature. So with decisions we make. Over recent weeks I have been making a habit of standing outside in my pyjamas, with a cup of tea, to watch the sunrise. There were two challenges: Firstly, it got earlier each morning, meaning less of a lie-in. Secondly, as dawn arrived, more drivers got distracted as they passed a man, standing roadside in pyjamas, like a prison escapee. One morning I stared at the horizon, distant trees becoming silhouettes by the enlarging amber glow. I waited. For so long, nothing seemed to happen. Doesn’t life feel like this sometimes? We wait, we get frustrated, as if everything should be in our control. Then, doubt disappeared, and accompanied by a fanfare of birdsong, the earth tilted and the face of the sun appeared. All by itself. A brand new day - a never-before-day! - arrived. There was no going back.

Oftentimes it seems our “turning points” follow weeks (or months) of immense stress, difficulty, darkness. The darkest hour, as they say, is just before dawn. Does that ring a bell? If you answer ‘yes’, you’re not alone. The NHS describe stress as “the feeling of being under too much mental or emotional pressure” so you feel unable to cope.

by Christopher Spriggs

Some stress is normal: the kids have to be at school on time! Some stress can nudge you to attempt something new or tricky. But too much stress can interfere with sleep, self-talk, diet, relationships and enjoying life. Then stress turns to distress, and can create serious illnesses, including heart disease, asthma, diabetes. Spotting the early signs, like reduced appetite, headaches and loss of concentration can help lessen it. But it doesn’t mean you need “fixing”. You’re not a machine. You are as much part of nature as the sunrise. Stress is what people experience before a “turning point”. Perhaps the pressure is part of the change? Making a decision, changing a habit, facing a fear, owning up to a mistake, making a request. Upon these tiny things our days turn. So, if you’re feeling under pressure, ask yourself: (1) What, specifically, am I concerned about?; (2) What is within my control that I can take action on, this week? E.g. Sleep, exercise, relationships, work habits; (3) What resources (rest, bravery, a plan?) do I need to do this?; (4) Then ask yourself, “If you knew you can handle this, what would you do? Then how would you feel?” Actions change emotions. Looking after ourselves each day - physically, mentally, relationally, perhaps cup of tea in hand releases endorphins (those feel good hormones), which in turn improves sleep, concentration, selfcontrol, thus reducing stress. The sunrise reminds us that things are always changing anyway. There is no rewind button, only the onward flow. We can all walk with our heads up. Today might prove to be a tiny turning point? Even in your pyjamas.

Christopher Spriggs is a dad, coach and author, working principally with secondary schools to promote positive mental health and resiliency in the next generation.

Spring is in the air! Try Crown Green Bowling

A

surprising number of Alcestrians do not know the whereabouts of the bowling green in the town, although its history goes back over 300 years. The earliest references are to the existence of a “bowling alley” in 1622 and in 1683 of a “bowling green”, although it is unclear if these were on the site of the present-day green. Nowadays the green hosts the Alcester Bowling Club, who play crown green bowls, making the green the most southerly crown green in the country, as well as one of the oldest. Each season the Club enters eight teams in league competitions in the south Birmingham area. For those who are less competitive, members meet on Monday and Thursday mornings and on Saturday afternoons for social play. The season runs from April to September each year. Crown green bowIs is played on an equal basis by all ages and both sexes. The Club is looking to expand its membership, so is arranging an Open Week in April when anyone looking for something new can come along and find out more. The game requires no special dress other than that

footwear should be flat soled (trainers are ideal), the Club providing all other necessary equipment. So, why not come along and try your hand at the game? For further information contact John Westmoreland on 07843 240465. Where, then, is the green? It is located at the end of Meeting Lane, off Henley Street near the Town Hall.

T

here is a little corner in Bidford where a group of volunteers are trying to brighten up Bidford High Street. They are tucked away on a Friday morning in St. Lawrence’s Church Hall busy thinking up designs for painted banners to hang outside shops, businesses and even homes.

What we are trying to do is show off the different features of Bidford as well as its past history. Some of you may have seen examples of our work at the Bidford Bash, the Christmas lights and even the Christmas tree festival; where a few we had been working on were displayed. We are a small group who have never done this sort of thing before, but we are certainly learning a lot. We have all taken part in discussing what sort of designs and painting should be on the banners and have each had a part in producing the end product.

18 connectionmags.co.uk

If you have some spare time on a Friday morning between 10am to 1pm we would be so pleased to see you. Do not worry if you have never attempted to do anything like this before as none of our present group have. It has given us all an opportunity to make new friends and have a sort of social morning where a lot of relaxed people lose themselves in painting on the canvases. There is no cost involved, just come and see what we are doing and if you get really interested then just join us. Pop along any Friday around 10am to 1pm as you would be most welcome! Below are some of the banners that our group have been working on, depicting Bidford village life, events and history. Overhaul Your Lawn by Pippa Greenwood

It has rained so much in recent months and the ground has become so wet that there have been times when I’ve thought that my garden might be about to turn into a paddy-field! The flower and vegetable beds are starting to pick up remarkably well, but it is the lawn that seems to have taken the most obvious battering. Over-wet conditions can cause roots to die off and will reduce the oxygen in the soil. Worse still, any areas of the lawn that you’ve had to walk on, albeit infrequently, or over which you’ve had to move a wheelbarrow or other fairly weighty bit of equipment, will have become compacted or squashed. It may not be obvious but the air spaces that should be plentiful in the soil will have been dramatically reduced, and the heavier your soil is, the worse the problem is likely to be. So if you want your grass to be as green as it should be and ready for the summer use it’s likely to get, it’s time to get to work now.

20 connectionmags.co.uk

Check over your lawn mower and see to anything that needs sorting. If it’s too much to take on yourself, take it to a reputable outlet for a service as soon as possible – you’ll need it even more in a few weeks’ time! Once it is working well again, you’ll be surprised at how much quicker and easier each mowing session becomes. In most areas of the country grass will have started to grow quite a bit faster recently and so may need cutting. Make sure that you don’t set the blades too low for the first few cuts, as this will weaken the growth and make it more likely that weeds will start to invade. You can relieve some of the soil compaction to allow air down to the roots, making for better growth and healthier grass. Do this after you’ve mown the lawn. If only small areas are compacted, use a garden fork and drive it into the lawn every 4-6 inches or so, trying to get the tines of the

/theconnectionmag

fork to a depth of 4-6 inches as well. Once the tines are in the soil, gently ease the handle of the fork back and forth to enlarge each hole. You now have some drainage holes. If you mix up some sieved garden soil or loam with horticultural sand (about one part soil/loam to nine parts sand) you can brush this mixture across the lawn and into the holes you’ve made. The result is a drainage system over those compacted areas. If the soil in the garden is quite heavy or contains a lot of clay, the chances are that these last few months will have done a lot of damage and the whole lawn will benefit from aerating. For an enduring and even more useful effect, buy, borrow or hire a ‘hollow-time aerator’, either as a hand operated one, a machine or a mower attachment. This will actually cut cylinders of soil out of your lawn, and when filled with the ‘top-dressing’ mix above will result in much longer-lasting Continued on page 22...

drainage channels. Moss might look good and green right now, but it tends to look miserable later in the year as it dries out and becomes brown. So apply some moss killer and then rake it all out after the time specified on the pack. It will make your lawn look worse initially, but allows more air to the roots of the grass plants and gives them more space to grow and spread too. Lawns that have suffered from serious waterlogging will really benefit from a suitable feeding regime. Poor growth and over-wet conditions will have put these plants under a lot of stress. Whether you choose a granular or liquid feed, make sure that it is a spring lawn

food, as this will be formulated specially to give the balance of nutrients lawns need now. If you do use a granular feed, ensure that you water it in unless it rains shortly after you’ve applied it. Walking on a very wet lawn soon wears it out and kills off grasses. Get these bare or bald areas sorted now and by the time the summer comes it won’t look like a patchwork. Roughen up the bare or thin areas using a rake and then sprinkle a suitable seed mix on to match in with the existing grasses. If you’ve not got many patches to sow, you can buy small patch repair packs to keep the cost down. Once all the work is done, and it may well take several hours

in total (depending on the size of the lawn and exactly how damaged and waterlogged it was), try your best to keep off it for a few weeks to allow it to bask in all that pampering and take advantage of all the TLC and grow away really well.

COLOURFENCE

VIRTUALLY MAINTENANCE FREE

Nothing lasts for ever. Particularly timber fencing. That’s why Colourfence (with its 25 year guarantee†) is popping up in gardens all over the UK.

Now’s the perfect time to get your garden ready for the weather ahead. I’ve wasted countless days and a small fortune, trying to maintain tired wooden fences that looked dreadful and always required yet more work. Discovering Colourfence has changed things forever! It’s scientifically tested and rated to ensure when professionally installed it can withstand wind gusts of up to 130mph. This year when my neighbours are wasting precious leisure time treating their fences with a variety of preservatives, I’ll be giving my Colourfence a quick hose down then sitting back to enjoy my garden. As the Colourfence system offers a lasting solution to fencing woes it’s easy to see why many regard it as the premier fencing solution on the market. Colourfence won’t rot and it resists weather that quickly damages wooden fences, it has none of the drawbacks of wood but plenty of added benefits and it’s better value too! High quality

AND great value – it’s a customisable product with a variety of colours and styles offering a first rate finish. The materials and fitting are so good that Colourfence is guaranteed† for 25 years! To find out how Colourfence might benefit you and arrange your free no obligation quote, I strongly suggest you call one of their helpful experts.

Energy Boost in 3 Simple Steps Spring brings a massive energy surge in nature, but how can we feel recharged and refreshed? Esther Mills-Roberts explains…

T

he cold season’s over. With its stodge and podge, less sunlight hours, it’s a breath of fresh air to be seeing the sun and feeling like nature is waking up. So how can we make the most of this Springtime energy charge in 3 simple steps?

One: Iron and Vitamin D. Iron-deficiency anaemia can result in severe lethargy, so it makes sense to get this checked out, either with a dietary analysis (to assess whether the amounts in your diet are low) or through a blood test. Iron-rich foods include fortified cereals, dark green leafy vegetables, eggs, beans and pulses and wholegrains. Supplementation is one way to increase intakes quickly over time so you might like to seek advice about which form of iron is most suited to your physiology. Vitamin D supplementation is now recommended by government for adults in the UK, at an intake of 10 microgrammes a day, because liver stores are considered insufficient to carry people through the winter months. A blood test can assess this, but in any case, supplementation is still recommended daily. Low vitamin D levels can lead to fatigue and tiredness, low mood, bone pain and poor immune function.

Two: Amazing antioxidants Antioxidant nutrients are important to help the body to clear unhelpful, potentially damaging free radical reactive compounds in the body. But they’re so much more than that too. They help to support healthy immune function, are involved in key biochemical pathways around the production of hormones, brain chemistry, control of blood sugar and digestive health function. Thankfully, eating plenty of fresh

28 connectionmags.co.uk

fruits and vegetables, wholegrains and high-quality proteins will make sure that your diet is rich in them.

Three: Powerful Probiotics

Over the past ten years, there has been an increase in understanding about the importance of the gut microflora in helping to regulate metabolism, help the breakdown of foods, play a part in strong immune function and even help to manage a healthy weight (which, of course, is important for good energy levels). A broad range of gut bacteria is very important to make sure that our digestive system is functioning to it’s full potential. Taking a broad-spectrum probiotic might help this, and supplements to help regulate bowel function (specific to constipation) such as senna might also be chosen. Increase your intakes of pickled and fermented foods – though I’m not sure ones of the alcoholic kind qualify! Esther Mills-Roberts is a degree-trained nutritional biochemist. She is a Registered Nutritionist (8445), author and member of the Guild of Health Writers. She has a private practice and can be contacted via www.allaboutnutrition.co.uk or by phone: 07834 227677 (please leave a message, if in consultations).

BMW X3: Truly Capable by James Baggot

The wheels are spinning, but the BMW isn’t going anywhere. Every revolution of the alloys sinks the new X3 deeper into the huge blood-orange dunes of the Saharan desert. We’ve been tackling one of the toughest off-road routes I’ve ever experienced – from deep, rolling dunes to sharp, rocky trails – and the fact that only now, close to our final destination, one of my colleagues has managed to half bury a BMW is a testament to the X3’s abilities. Nestled in a lunar landscape, beneath a carpet of stars so bright they look superimposed on the sky, is our camp – a long way from the madness of Marrakesh, where our day began. We set off on our epic drive towards the Atlas Mountains, the roads from the city quickly opening up into out-of-thisworld landscapes. Soon we’re crossing the Tizi n Tichka mountain pass, one mighty hairpin after another. Our X30d – with a new 260bhp, 620Nm engine – is the pick of the range, and on these roads it’s swift and enjoyable. At midday we arrive in Ouarzazate, and the famous Atlas Film Studios, where we

34 connectionmags.co.uk

drive our BMWs through the gates of the Game of Thrones city set.

Iriki Lane and Erg Chigaga, all stages of the famous Dakar Rally.

By dusk we’ve covered nearly 300 miles and have taken in the stunning Anti Atlas Mountains. We pass through M’Hamid, the last conurbation before the desert, in a dusty convoy of 15 brand new BMWs.

On the edge of the desert, a rear tyre loses pressure but BMW chaperones soon change the wheel and we continue. We’re enjoying the X3’s comfy new interior and smart multimedia system when another tyre bursts. It takes an hour for the BMW support car to arrive, and it looks like we’ll miss the flight from Marrakesh.

Our camp is an hour of offroading away and our X3 drifts and slips its way like a rally car across the challenging terrain, with just the lights of the cars in front illuminating the impenetrable darkness. It’s the blackness that catches out a colleague when approaching the camp, resulting in the BMW being beached in a position that takes seven men and shovels to retrieve it from. The next morning, we’re told today will be tougher than yesterday. Five hours of harsh off-roading will be followed by a dash back across the mountains to the airport. We’re quickly back in the groove, drifting the off-roader around sandy corners and clattering over sharp rocks. As the desert eases, we experience the barren, flat, dry river beds of the Ouef Draa,

/theconnectionmag

And so begins a rush to the airport, but from screeching hairpin bends to blink-andyou’ll-miss-them overtakes, the BMW takes it all in its stride and we arrive with minutes to spare. Sat, perspiring, exhausted but elated on the plane, we smile – we made it. The BMW X3 may have two new tyres, but it’s been returned unscathed and we’re taking off just 25 minutes after arriving at the airport. All credit to BMW. There aren’t many firms who’d put their cars, or a bunch of journalists, through what we experienced. It’s proven it’s a truly capable car, able to transport you and your family on any adventure – and I for one am certainly looking forward to the next one.

BACK OF THE NET

I wonder whether the ‘stars’ of Man United were looking at their feet when they were dumped out of the European Championship last night (thank you Stephen Hawking for the above quote). Never mind the players, who will still pick up their tens of thousands for losing ingloriously against an average Sevilla side, while the fans paid to watch a disappointing performance. Mourinho said he “has no regrets”. I wonder what regrets the ManU fans have. To make matters worse, depending on results, those same fans may have to suffer the ignominy of their ‘noisy neighbours’ winning the title against them at the start of April. Such is the expectation and pressure at the top of the Premiership. While most lower teams and their supporters have to be content with scraps, the Citys and Uniteds of the football world can never be allowed to be happy with second place.

36 connectionmags.co.uk

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet”, Stephen Hawking As a supporter of one of those lower teams, albeit one that has under performed in recent years and should be in the top six in the Premiership (shouldn’t they all?), I am reminded of another of Hawking’s quotes, “Life would be tragic if it weren’t funny”, although for some in football fandom I can’t help but think the words ‘tragic’ and ‘funny’ should be transposed. Last month I gave Coventry little chance of promotion but they just might make the playoffs, giving them a one in four chance of going up. If they make it, they could have a derby against Birmingham next season. Blues have had yet another change of manager and need a vast improvement very quickly. Villa still look likely to be in the Championship play-offs at best, while not playing consistently. Wolves are looking likely champions in the second tier, although Cardiff are running them close, and will undoubtledly replace a poorly performing Albion, who have a big following in this part of the world. It’s been a bad year for WBA fans. By this time next month many of the ups and downs will be decided. Till next month... Back of the net!

Happy Birthday Alcester Town Hall!

hen Fulke Greville provided £300 to build a Market Hall in Alcester in 1618, I wonder whether he could have imagined the uses to which it would have been put in the next 400 years. Yes, Alcester’s War Memorial Town Hall is 400 years old this year! For many years the building served as the Town’s market, since which time it has also been used as the Town’s Lock-up and as a Court Room, before being bought by the people of Alcester in 1919. To celebrate this anniversary there are a number of events being held, including a talk by Adam Busiakiewicz on Fulke Greville on 13th April. Ian Greig will also give a talk on 11th May on the History of the Hall and its place in the Alcester community. The Hall will host exhibitions showing its history over both of these weekends. There will also be a celebratory Banquet on 22nd September. Look out for our advertising of these. We are so lucky to have this wonderful building in our Town, and fortunate for it to be maintained by volunteers. Over the last few years many improvements have been made including a new boiler, a superb new kitchen with modern stainless steel units & a dishwasher. Very recently a stair-lift has been installed, giving assisted access to the upstairs hall. The lower hall has been completely redecorated and a new oak floor fitted in the upper hall. We also have a web site and booking system which can be accessed at: www.alcestertownhall.org.uk The improvements have been achieved by hiring out the Hall and by fundraising, along with welcome donations from both Alcester Court Leet, Alcester Town Council and a few benefactors. The Town Hall Management

38 connectionmags.co.uk

Committee have a very successful 100 Club and they also organise events such as Black Country Nights, Jazz Brunches and Beetle Drives to generate further income. The Hall is used by many local Groups & Organisations and is a popular and inexpensive venue for parties, catering for all age groups, with a bar available run by The Turks Head.

The superb architecture of the upstairs hall makes it a popular venue for wedding receptions, business conferences and a wide range of other events. The Town Hall is Alcester’s pride & joy and it belongs to us, the people of Alcester. The Committee are always looking for people to become ‘Friends of the Hall’ and to help with handy work, general maintenance and fund raising, and it is always good to see the town’s people supporting the Hall by attending the AGM, which this year will be held at 7.30pm on 4th April. Here’s to the next 400 years!

Belgrade By Solange Hando

Whichever way you arrive, the first sight of Belgrade takes your breath away, the ‘White City’ rising like a sphinx above the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. Up on the hill, the iconic spire of St Michael’s, the Orthodox cathedral, dominates the old town but all eyes are set on the citadel spreading along the ridge, 125 metres above the valley. This strategic location fired up battles and invasions for almost 2,000 years, razing the city to the ground 44 times, but in the new independent Serbia peace has come and the old fortress sprinkles towers, turrets and walls in the wonderful oasis of Kalemegdan, the city’s central park. Birds twitter all around and there are statues and flower displays, grand staircases, fountains and gates, a few crenellations, a couple of museums and churches and lots of winding paths and shaded seats where locals come to chat or play chess. Visitors stroll along the beautiful cliff top promenade to enjoy the views, the modern city in the distance, the bridges, the cruising boats anchored along the Sava, the green waters of the Danube flowing around the Big Island’s nature reserve. Excavations have revealed the presence of the Vinca, one of

44 connectionmags.co.uk

the oldest prehistoric cultures in Europe, the Celts, Romans and many others, but surviving fortifications only date back to the 18th century, rebuilt by Austro-Hungarian and Turkish rulers. The ‘old town’ is even younger, claiming 200 years at the very most, but is stylish and colourful with tree-lined streets, outdoor restaurants and stunning buildings ranging from Romantic or Renaissance style to neo-Baroque, Art Nouveau or early Deco, in white or pastel hues. The wide pedestrian street Knez Mihailova is everyone’s favourite, the place to meet friends, enjoy a drink or browse the luxury shops before heading to the vast Republic Square. There you can gaze at the equestrian statue of 19th century ruler Prince Michael, the National Theatre and the National Museum containing some 290,000 exhibits from around the world. Most valuable is the Miroslav’s Gospel, the oldest Cyrillic manuscript of its kind, with 362 illuminated pages dating back to around 1180. Belgrade has myriad churches, including Saint Sava rebuilt in the 20th century and now one of the largest in the world, honouring the country’s medieval patron saint and

/theconnectionmag

founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Saint Sava is set on the Vracar plateau but nearer to the town centre is an elegant cluster of former palaces, now turned City Hall and Presidential Seat, enhanced by lawns and flower beds. Look out for the House of the National Assembly across the park, pristine white and fronted by sculptures of ‘Black Horses Playing’. Relaxed and cosmopolitan, easy to walk around, Belgrade is a delightful capital, from the gently buzzing centre and waterways to the lovely Botanical Garden or the secluded Bohemian District around Skadarska Street. Once home to gypsies, this steep cobbled lane is full of old charm, a hideaway for writers, artists and savvy visitors. There are intriguing paintings and trompe l’oeil, antique and ethnic shops, small galleries and inviting flower-draped terraces serving delicious food and wine at affordable prices. Guitar, harmonica, violin or tamburitza, traditional music sounds in every corner, late into the night but a world away from the throbbing nightclubs and floating restaurants along the Sava. Meanwhile on the cliff-like ridge, all is quiet and the old citadel glows high above the mighty rivers.

Growing the Forest the Natural Way By Richard Price, Heart of England Forest

A

s spring approaches apace and our tree planting reaches fever pitch, the Heart of England Forest is also working hard to regenerate without human help as seeds are spread far and wide by nature herself. Natural regeneration is the process by which the woodland is restocked by trees that develop from seeds that fall and germinate near their ‘parents’. While the Heart of England Forest team and our volunteer planters use saplings nurtured in our own tree nursery at Coughton Park, the mature trees in the woodland also do their bit to grow the woodland, often with the help of the weather and the local wildlife.

Keeping it local There are distinct advantages to natural regeneration. Seeds dropped from mature trees will already be acclimatised to their natural surroundings and soil, and stand a greater chance of strong survival as a result. There can be a downside as well, though, and as Head Forester Stephen Coffey says, “we can sometimes find species of older trees, such as oak, dropping seeds that can lead to 20 or 30 new trees growing in their immediate vicinity causing an over population in a limited space. With ash it can be as many as 100! However, if nature is telling us that, say, a proliferation of willow or alder is occurring naturally in an area, we will take care not to force other species into that space – we won’t argue with nature!”

48 connectionmags.co.uk

Giving wildlife a helping hand While the weather plays an important role in ensuring that some seeds, such as ash, are wind-blown across the woodland, the work undertaken by the Heart of England Forest team can also go some way to helping the process of natural regeneration. Allowing the woodland canopy and understory to thrive through careful management ensures birdlife and small mammals are provided with a safe haven. They in turn will help facilitate the distribution of seeds and acorns. For example, squirrels and mice often bury large winter stores of nuts and then either forget where they left them or fall prey to predators, meaning that the store is left underground to germinate. Jackdaws and magpies also follow a similar pattern, often leaving undisturbed caches of nuts and seeds buried in the woodland for nature to take its course.

See for yourself One of the finest places to see natural regeneration in action is Dorothy’s Wood. The presence of pet dogs enjoying walks with their owners means that any deer, which may cause damage to seedlings, are a rarity. The presence of naturally regenerated hazel, cherry, oak and willow from mature trees, along with the blackthorn in the hedgerows is evident, while the newer trees are also reaching an age when they, too, will start dropping their own seeds. So, now is the perfect time to take a stroll and see if you can spot the signs that nature has started its own regeneration. Eagle-eyed walkers can search for clues across the Forest and, when you find new growth among the mature trees, you can return again and again to monitor its progress.

Spring walks, Bluebells and Rambling ‘Round Dorsington If you are unsure where to go for a walk, check out the waymarked trails mentioned on the Heart of England Forest website. Alternatively, join one of our spring or summer guided walks, led by a member of the team who will give you the opportunity to ask questions as you go. If you really want to get out exploring and stretching your legs, join us for a Ramble ‘Round Dorsington on Saturday 7th April where an 8.5mile route, (with an early exit at 6.5 miles) will lead you around the farm and woodland

estate formerly owned by our founder, Felix Dennis. For something easier going on the legs, but an overload for the senses, our Bluebell Wood Fundraising Open Day is taking place on Saturday 28th April at Alne Wood Park, Spernal. This usually private, ancient woodland is a sight to behold, with its ocean of bluebells and smells of spring. Tickets purchased in advance allow for early access on the day. To book on to any of these events and find out what else we have on offer, simply visit the events page on the Heart of England Forest website. Whether you are looking to find a new route for a Sunday stroll, wanting to attend one of our events and meet new people, or willing to get hands on and help along with our fantastic crew of volunteers, there is no time better than spring to get out and about in the Heart of England Forest.

Alcester Town Council APRIL 2018

Developing Alcester’s Neighbourhood Plan A new Steering Group, chaired by Wendy Mills, has been set up to progress Alcester’s Neighbourhood Plan. Consisting of residents, town councillors and business representatives, all passionate about Alcester, we are organised into working groups to develop policies relating to the local Economy, Housing and other building, Community Facilities, Transport and Infrastructure, and our Natural Environment. The Neighbourhood Plan area covers the parish of Alcester. It will look to the future and create policies covering the period until 2031. There is a prescribed process to follow and before the draft plan is approved it will be subject to independent assessment and local referendum, giving the town’s people of Alcester a chance to see it and vote on it. Once it’s approved, Stratford District Council will refer to it when considering future changes and deciding on planning applications. There have already been several surveys and consultations asking townsfolk about what they think are the current issues and including changes they want to see. Stratford District Council’s Core Strategy has also now been approved. These will all be considered as we draft Alcester’s Neighbourhood Plan. We want to protect our heritage and community whilst allowing incremental development and enhancement of our facilities. Our vision is that Alcester will continue to be a thriving town in which to live and work and remains attractive to visitors. If you require further information about the developing Neighbourhood Plan please email administration@alcester-tc.gov.uk.

Most of the funds we raise go

to support local charities, with a smaller share to carefully chosen overseas charities. We want to ensure money goes direct to where it is most needed. So we deal with Rotary Clubs working locally such as in India & Nepal; with Rotary International such as the End Polio Project; & with trusted partners such as Stratford based GAGA, & ShelterBox. Why was ShelterBox started? It was founded by Tom Henderson OBE, a Rotarian & former Royal Navy search & rescue diver. He saw that the aid response to most disasters was in the form of food & medicine to help people survive the immediate aftermath. Little or no assistance was given in terms of proper shelter to help them through the first few days, weeks & months as they tried to rebuild their lives. ShelterBox was launched to fill that void. In 1999, Tom started sourcing equipment & in April 2000 it was launched & the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard adopted it as its millennium project. Many people & organisations support ShelterBox & Rotary has a close relationship with the charity. Our club sent money to them to provide shelter to those hit by Hurricane Irma. That is just one example but in any situation where homes are destroyed you can be sure ShelterBox are one of the first responders. This is why: ‘When people are plunged into crisis, normality is suspended. But good, quality shelter can cut through the chaos. It doesn’t just give people space to heal from physical and emotional trauma, but it gives them roots, roots that go far deeper than a simple tent peg.’ www.shelterbox.org Our friendly & informal meetings take place on Thursday mornings for breakfast at Kings Court Hotel, Alcester.
