... to the February Connection.
Regular readers will probably know by now just how much I enjoy my food, so I am anticipating mid-February with much glee. Firstly, who doesn’t love a pancake? And I’m not talking about the fluffy American ones (although I am definitely partial to a stack of those for a weekend breakfast). No Shrove Tuesday (13th) for me is complete without the lovely, wafer thin ones, drizzled with lemon juice, sprinkled with caster sugar and rolled up, and we have the perfect recipe for you on page 01527 503030 10. I could eat them by the dozen, and probably will, although 205831 I might hold back so there’s room for a nice Valentine’s dinner 01926 495321 the next day. Of course, February isn’t all about food, however much I’d like that to be the case. Anyone still in the “new year’s resolution” state of mind may find themselves giving something up for 999 or 112 Lent or, as I’ve heard more often in recent years, making a 444816 positive lifestyle change. 08008 00151 How about reading? Well, we’ve got an article on books (p.8). 08004 04090 Or writing? We’ve featured a poem about Bidford Bridge (p.12) 08001 11999 – maybe you’d like to submit something for our next edition? Looking to be a little more introspective? Christopher Spriggs has written just the thing for you (p.14). Or perhaps you fancy a hobby that’s a little more daring and unusual? Funny you 0300 555 8171 should say that – apparently Bog Snorkelling (p.38) is all the 773239 rage these days. I think I’m going to try to tackle our garden, 0844 855 2322 and get some “me time” in the process. I will be following the 07771 616189 pruning tips in the gardening article (p.20-22) whilst hopefully enjoying the whiff of springtime that’s in the air. 766750 As you can already tell, there’s something for most people in 762450 this edition, and we’ve not even touched on our competition 766200 yet. Fans of Ariana Grande or Hollie Steel of Britain’s Got Talent 270744 fame should turn to page 45 and find out how they can win a 01386 871777 pair of tickets to ‘Ariana’ at The Albany Theatre in Coventry. But 262889 hurry, the competition closes on 9th February! Finally, as well as our usual community features (and a few more articles), turn to page 60 if you’ve been feeling under the weather just lately - there’s some interesting information 762285 on colds and flu. The vapour rub on the soles of the feet trick 762494 always seems to help in our house. 762888 What a busy edition, and March’s is already looking so too. 773201 Until next month... 762444 772200 488247 December’s competition winner was B. Hidden Gems We usually focus on new releases for our book reviews, but this time we’ve scoured the back catalogues for a few gems you might have missed. station eleven – emily st. John mandel From Kirsten – child actor turned travelling thespian – to aspiring doctor Jeevan, the novel tells the individual stories of several people before, during and after a pandemic that wipes out most of the population. Gripping, beautiful and all too plausible, Station Eleven is a must for fans of Margaret Atwood, Erin Morgenstern and Suzanne Collins. harry potter series – Jk rowling, illustrated by Jim kay There can’t be many people who haven’t heard of the boy wizard by now. If you’re a fan, you might want to consider upgrading your paperbacks for the hardbacks illustrated by Jim Kay. One is being released each year, starting with The Philosopher’s Stone in 2015, so the first three are currently available to buy. Kay’s illustrations are superb and incredibly detailed. Prefer e-readers? Check out the Kindle in Motion editions, which animate parts of the illustrations, so you can watch Harry fly through the air in hot pursuit of the golden snitch while you’re reading.

the mysterious affair at cuckoo song – frances hardinge Cuckoo Song was first published in 2014, the year before Frances Hardinge’s Costa Award-winning novel The Lie Tree. Eleven year old Triss wakes up from an accident to find things aren’t as they were. She can’t satisfy her immense hunger for a start; her sister is terrified of her; and even her dolls have turned against her. Is she going mad, or is the truth even more terrifying? A thoroughly enjoyable, fantastical read, Cuckoo Song is sure to prove a hit with fans of Neil Gaiman and Angela Carter. the crow road – iain banks The Crow Road covers some pretty big themes – love, death, religion, drugs and fractured families being just a few of them. Prentice McHoan returns home for his grandmother’s funeral and soon gets drawn into trying to solve the mystery of his Uncle Rory’s disappearance. It’s a dark, intense novel and far from an easy read, but the wit and sheer beauty of the writing could well make it one of your all-time favourites.

why mummy drinks – gill sims Gill Sims is the author of a hugely successful Facebook blog – Peter and Jane’s Mummy. Why Mummy Drinks was released last autumn and quickly became a bestseller. Written in diary format, it tells the story of Ellen, a 39 year old mum of two, who’s trying to balance work and children, while navigating playground politics, irritating in-laws and an ex-boyfriend. The ensuing drama is extremely funny and very relatable if you’re a parent who isn’t quite ready to hang up her dancing shoes. styles – agatha christie If last year’s hit film Murder on the Orient Express has tempted you to dip into the works of Agatha Christie, why not start with her very first novel? Published in 1920 and set during World War I, it introduces readers to the brilliant mind of Belgian refugee Hercule Poirot. The murder of a woman has everyone pointing the finger at one man. It’s down to Poirot to find out the real culprit before it’s too late. While The Mysterious Affair at Styles is not considered Christie’s finest work, there are still plenty of twists and turns to keep you hooked.

Cake & Bake Perfect Pancakes Whip up a classic pancake batter to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Simply serve the traditional way with sugar and lemon juice or try one of our extra special sweet or savoury serving ideas. Makes 8 - Ready in 30 minutes plus standing time Ingredients: • 100g plain flour • Pinch of salt • 1 large egg • 300ml milk (or milk and water mixed) • Sunflower oil or unsalted butter, for frying 1. Sift the flour into a large bowl, add the salt and make a well in the centre. Add the egg and beat with a balloon whisk, gradually drawing in some of the flour. 2. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking all the time and drawing in the rest of the flour, until you have a smooth batter which is about the consistency of single cream. 3. Stand the batter for about 30 minutes to allow the starch grains in the flour to soften and expand –this will give a lighter pancake. If the batter has thickened slightly then just whisk in a splash of milk. 4. Heat a little sunflower oil or a knob of butter in a non-stick shallow frying pan (about 20cm diameter)until almost smoking then quickly ladle in enough of the batter to thinly cover the base of the pan, swirling the pan to give an even layer. 5. Cook for 1-2 minutes until small air bubbles appear in the pancake then flip it over and cook for a further minute until golden. Repeat with the rest of the mixture, serving the pancakes as they are cooked or interleaving with baking paper and keeping warm in a low oven.

Orange cream – heat 4tbsp thin-shred marmalade with 150ml orange juice in a frying pan and simmer for a few minutes until syrupy. Fold the pancakes and add to the pan, turning to coat in the syrup. Serve topped with whipped cream or crème fraiche. saVoury Cheese and bacon melts – add 2tsp dried Italian herbs to the pancake batter. Fill each cooked pancake with some grated Cheddar and 2 rashers crisply fried smoked bacon rashers. Fold over and pop in a hot oven for 10 minutes until the cheese has melted. Tuna parcels – place a spoonful of canned flaked tuna fish in the centre of each cooked pancake and top with some canned sweetcorn and chopped spring onion. ‘Bidford Bridge’ A Poem
by Niki Baldwin
M
any Bidford residents will remember only too well the chaos caused by the damage to Bidford bridge in 2015, with the bridge being closed for five months. Despite new signage clearly displaying the 10 tonne limit, there are still huge 40 tonne lorries crossing the bridge regularly. In her frustration at lorry drivers ignoring the weight limit, local resident, Niki Baldwin, has penned the following verse, accompanying it with her own illustration. We reproduce it with Niki’s permission. The Romans crossed here once The Saxons followed on too In the 15th Century a bridge was built Of mellow stone and Lias blue.
Simple lives of simple folk The pace was no doubt slow No stressful strains of engine noise No constant traffic flow.
A packhorse bridge for country folk Eight arches bore their weight Today it’s traversed by traffic galore Hence its weakened state.
Today the cars they zoom across Artic lorries follow in their wake The 10 tonne limit happily ignored What’s the hurry for goodness sake?
The unending thrum of modern life Has it quaking to its core Vibrations from vehicles all day long Build more and more and more.
We only live some finite years All too soon we’ll be dead and gone But this ancient crossing that will outlive us Should stay permanent and strong.
No longer safe to amble across Pedestrians wait in bays As cars and lorries take precedence We hark back to bygone days.
So please be kind and slow things down The bridge we must try to save For the sake of people yet to come Lorry drivers, please behave! Niki Baldwin

Three Questions
W
ith New Year’s fireworks behind us, and those well-intentioned resolutions about ‘the new you’ already rehashed into version 4.0, here’s an alternative which may breathe a little more life and meaning into our daily goings-on.
They are drawn from the life of 19th century poet Walt Whitman who, having experienced a stroke aged 53 which left him half-paralysed, realised the finish line of his life was getting closer. He decided to turn his attention to what to make of his time here: “What makes life worth living? Worth remembering?” he reflected. After much time in nature, he wrote to his friend: “I easily tire, I am very clumsy, I cannot walk far; but my spirits are first-rate”, and he offered these questions: 1. What do you stand for? 2. What are you contributing to others around you? 3. How will you be remembered? Even 130 years later, these questions can still act as an anchor for us - amid the storm of our noisy gadget-based existence, repetitive work pressures and the chaotic swell of our daily worries. Read those questions again. There is much we can’t control or even influence in our day-to-day meandering, but I suggest these questions may be worth taking for a walk - perhaps by a river, a park or forest. Somewhere you can think for yourself. They are not questions to beat yourself up with - there’s no scoring involved, but allow them to gently re-orientate yourself towards who and what matters to you. Let them infuse you with fresh resolve and spur you onward. Most of us have intentions, dreams, ideas, desires to make something of our lives in this wigglyworld in which we find ourselves. We can’t straighten it all out, but we can each contribute something unique. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by comparisons to others (an insecurity amplified by social media) or held back by the past (and we all have a past that didn’t go 100% to plan). When we gain some clarity about what “we stand for”, we often fear failure or ridicule. That’s normal. But, as
author Michael Neill says, we can only fail in three ways: (1) we don’t start; (2) we give up too soon; or (3) we run out of time. “Follow your inner GPS” he says, that quiet voice inside you, “keep going”. These questions have a personal poignance. For those that may have followed the journey a few years ago, I remember following a “quiet voice inside me” by teaming up with my Uncle Andrew. He was a 39-time marathon runner, before being diagnosed with a terminal illness called Motor Neurone Disease which robbed him of physical mobility. We teamed up to complete ‘one last marathon’ together. My uncle strapped in his NHS wheelchair dressed like he was going to climb Everest, and me pushing from behind. That ‘one last marathon’ turned into 2 marathons, 5 half marathons and the Great South Run, awarenessraising interviews about the illness on TV and radio, and even a book. That NHS wheelchair, void of suspension and comfort, did a lot of miles. Sadly Andrew died a few days after Christmas Day, having bravely endured MND for seven years. He was a courageous, gentle-hearted and honest man. Like Whitman, he loved nature. It was clear what he stood for, and his contribution to family and community life lives on through his example. I’m not sure I’ve ever had any luck with keeping New Year resolutions. They seem a bit flimsy. But Walt Whitman’s questions, and my Uncle Andrew’s example - now, they’re worth noticing. After all, these are our lives that we are living.

Time to Get Pruning by Pippa Greenwood At this time of year the weather is often perfect for pruning and cutting back woody plants, and there’s a good chance that there are many pruning jobs that have built up over the last year and could benefit from your attention now - so take advantage of the fact that deciduous trees, shrubs, hedges and climbers are now devoid of leaves and get stuck in. Here’s how to make sure your pruning will really benefit your plants: • If you have a relatively small expanse of hedge or are looking to roughly reshape a shrub, a good, sharp pair of shears should do the job. Make sure they are well-oiled so that the blades move smoothly and then angle the blades to make a level trimmed surface. When you are cutting along the top of a hedge you may want to use a guide line so that you make a neat and level surface - a taut string will do. For large hedges consider using a powered hedge cutter or hedge trimmer, but make sure you are happy with the weight of
20 connectionmags.co.uk
the machine and can use it safely! • When the pruning of shrubs and trees includes the removal of stems at various heights and of varying thicknesses, it is worth using some ‘loppers’. These are available in various handle lengths, while some even have telescopic handles so that you can reach up higher without having to use a ladder or platform. They are much better at cutting through relatively thick stems than shears or secateurs and yet also allow for accurate positioning of the cut. If you are having to cut back branches above your head it is worth wearing some protective headgear, as well as goggles to protect your eyes from falling debris. • Everybody with even just a single shrub in their garden needs a pair of secateurs and the better the quality, the better the job you can do. Secateurs can be used for the most precise pruning of smaller woody stems. Provided they are good and sharp, you can make a perfectly clean and
/theconnectionmag
accurate cut. Always cut to an outward-facing bud (so that the new growth produced from that bud grows outwards). Secateurs are good for removing dead and dying stems as well as for formative pruning (where you are helping to ensure the plant grows in the direction you want it to), and for pruning to encourage flowering. If you are pruning out dead and dying material, bin it or burn it in case it carries infection. • When it comes to pruning out or tidying up larger branches on trees and shrubs then a proper pruning saw is what you need. If you choose one with one or (better still) two lines of teeth you can produce a very accurate and clean cut with relatively little effort. If you have fruit trees to prune then this is the perfect tool for the job. Use a sawing action for best results and again, if cutting above your head, wear protective headgear and goggles to protect your eyes. Make the pruning cut a few millimetres from the main stem to which the branch you are removing Continued on page 22...

trees are pruned in the summer months, so don’t prune them now unless there is no alternative and you are sure you are prepared to take the risk.
• Before you get carried away, check the best pruning time for the plants you have in mind. Most hedges and many shrubs can be cut back now, but if you are after a good display of flowers make sure that you prune at the correct time or else you may end up pruning out the plant’s potential.
• Always make sure that pruning tools are really sharp. If they are in the slightest bit blunt then the job will not only take a lot more effort from you, but may also end up with the plant being damaged, as the cut made will be jagged or stems may be crushed.
• Some trees - mainly those in the Prunus family such as cherries, plums, apricots, damsons, peaches and nectarines - are very prone to a potentially fatal fungal infection known as ‘silver leaf’. This is less likely to cause problems if these
• Create sloping cuts whenever you can so that rain and moisture runs off and does not accumulate (wetness encourages wood rotting), and cut close to but not on top of a bud as this will allow new growth without dieback. When you

are using shears or largescale trimmers you cannot do this, so always use secateurs, loppers or a saw. • Stand back from time to time when you are pruning and see what the overall appearance of the plant is like, and just where you are best off removing the next bit - if you are close up it is harder to see how your pruning is affecting the overall shape of the plant. Nothing lasts for ever. Particularly timber fencing. That’s why Colourfence (with its 25 year guarantee†) is popping up in gardens all over the UK.
Now’s the perfect time to get your garden ready for the weather ahead. I’ve wasted countless days and a small fortune, trying to maintain tired wooden fences that looked dreadful and always required yet more work. Discovering Colourfence has changed things forever! It’s scientifically tested and rated to ensure when professionally installed it can withstand wind gusts of up to 130mph. This year when my neighbours are wasting precious leisure time treating their fences with a variety of preservatives, I’ll be giving my Colourfence a quick hose down then sitting back to enjoy my garden. As the Colourfence system offers a lasting solution to fencing woes it’s easy to see why many regard it as the premier fencing solution on the market. Colourfence won’t rot and it resists weather that quickly damages wooden fences, it has none of the drawbacks of wood but plenty of added benefits and it’s better value too! High quality

Caring For an Older Dog When your dog ages, it begins to slow down and generally puts on weight. It may struggle with arthritis, making it difficult to move around with ease, particularly during the colder months. So what can you do to alleviate the symptoms of old age for your dog? of arthritis. It may take a while to get into their system, so it needs to be taken regularly. Individual needs vary, however, so speak to your vet, as they’ll be able to tell you the recommended dosage for your pet. check their diet A dog’s nutritional needs change as they age, and you may find that as they become less active, the requirement for protein reduces. If your dog doesn’t want to eat one large meal a day, you could try offering them two or three smaller meals – this might ease their digestion, and make them more comfortable at night. keep exercising Even though they’re slowing portant to exercise down, it’s imp

Honda Civic Type R by James Baggot
In the look-at-me stakes, Honda’s new Civic Type R screams attention-seeker louder than an Instagram influencer. With trying-toohard fins, wings and ice-white paintwork, it’s the sort of car you need to be sure you don’t mind people pointing out, and sometimes laughing at, when you’re driving it down the street. You see, when it comes to looks, Honda appears to have added needless frippery to its new Type R. The manufacturer will tell you it’s about aerodynamics and downforce, but does that really matter on the A34? No, what matters is the fact people will think you’ve added the adornments yourself after a binge credit card spending spree in Halfords. Inside, it’s far less shouty and much more traditional Honda formula. It’s a combination of harder plastics, an infotainment system that isn’t up to the standards of rivals and a seating position you’ll either love or hate. All that is soon forgotten on the road. Honda has sprinkled
34 connectionmags.co.uk
magic dust on this Type R and generated a machine that’s utterly fabulous to drive. Fast, grippy and with a gearbox that delights, it’s a hot hatch to take the fight to the very best in its class. The large, winged bucket seats are immediately comfortable, and the driving position suits us. Thumb the large starter button and there’s a real cackle from the exhaust – it’s exactly how every hot hatch should sound when they fire into life. Moving off, on to the surprisingly smooth asphalt that only occasionally crops up in the area of south Wales we’re testing in, and the Type R feels well set up. The ride is firm, that’s for sure, but then you almost expect that with a car like this. A small amount of jostling is part and parcel of a hot hatch – particularly a fast Honda. Though the Civic Type R feels quick, the real surprise is just how much speed you can carry through corners. The body is 38 per cent stiffer than the car it replaces, and
/theconnectionmag
this added rigidity makes itself known almost everywhere. The turn-in is quick, but the limited-slip differential means that you can fire the R into bends and it’ll just grip and grip. The whole experience is helped no end by the car’s seating position, which is now 50mm lower than the older Civic Type R. This gives you the ability to get low in the car, and completely transforms the entire drive. When the non-R Civic was launched sometime last year, most people knew that it featured a chassis which could benefit from an awful lot more power. The R saw to that – and then some. There’s next to no body roll, and the front two wheels cope admirably with the 316bhp being sent through them. You won’t torque steer either – the steering stays unaffected even when accelerating hard, and this gives you a huge amount of confidence. You could argue the location played into the hands of the Type R – green, rolling hills (or mountains, this is Wales Continued on page 36...

after all) coupled with tight, technical roads contributed heavily to the hot hatch experience. It’s a match made in driving heaven. However, the Type R has always been slightly tarred by that ‘boy racer’ brush. But despite that needlessly big wing, this car has got a real character to it, something lacking in quite a few others on sale today. Even the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine has its own personality, popping and growling as you push it harder through the bends. When the rain came, boy did the R get better. Yes, there’s a good degree of scrabble from the front tyres once the tarmac gets a soaking as the rubber struggles for traction, but after
that the Civic continues to impress. Everything about it feels alive, particularly along the wide open sections of the A4059 north of Penderyn. The short, notchy six-speed manual is a joy to use, while the characterful engine provides more than enough shove to keep things interesting. Put simply, it’s a far more involving car to drive than you’d expect. On these roads, the Type R seems perfect. Yes, the interior foibles could make it a difficult one to live with day-to-day and you’ll have to get used to the strange looks from passersby, but on Welsh A-roads when the sun is (occasionally) shining, there are few cars quite like it.

Ian who?
No, not Ian. It’s Kelechi Iheanacho. That’s the answer to one of the questions that will be asked in pub quizzes up and down the country in years to come. Who scored the first goal to be awarded by the VAR system in English football? VAR, Video Assistant Referee. Some say it’s a good idea, some say otherwise. I suppose for many it will depend whether their team benefits from the decision. Or not.
And the answer is Iheanacho old money) had his offside decision reversed following a 67 second delay while a man (probably in a warm studio) watched a slow motion replay before giving the correct decision. The point is that the correct decision was made. And it only took 67 seconds. It would probably have taken that long, and possibly a booking or two, to have stopped Leicester players complaining about the original decision, had it been given. Predictably, Claude Puel, Leicester’s manager said he liked VAR. Equally predictably, Uwe Rosler, Fleetwood’s manager said he didn’t like VAR, suggesting that it interrups the flow of play - “...don’t complicate the game, it’s beautiful as it is.”
Leicester City should have beaten Fleetwood Town, two divisions lower, in their first meeting, but the FA Cup can be a great leveller, especially when a team higher in the league rests a few of their better players.
Personally I believe that any sports game is better off if the correct decisions are made. Cricket and tennis have both benefited hugely from video replays for big decisions. To suggest that technology holding up the game for a minute is complicating and interrupting the game is just not cricket.
And so it went to a replay. On a cold night in Leicester, the referee’s assistant (linesman in

Bog Snorkling Not your bog-standard kind of sport by Kate McLelland Fancy navigating your way along a cold, muddy bog, wearing a snorkel and flippers? If your answer is an emphatic “No!” you may be surprised to hear that there are hundreds of people – not just in Britain, but across the globe – who would be happy to take your place. Bog snorkelling is a slippery, slimy sport popular in the UK, Australia, Ireland and Sweden, and in 2014 the travel publication Lonely Planet included it in a list of the world’s top fifty ‘must do’ activities. Competitors are required to travel two consecutive lengths along a 60 yard (55 metre) trench cut into a peat bog, completing the journey in the shortest possible time. Conventional swimming strokes are not allowed and competitors must rely on flipper power to propel themselves forward. dressing for the bog Donning goggles, a snorkel and flippers is compulsory, but there are no rules when it comes to the clothes competitors wear. This has resulted in some wonderfully eclectic costumes, with snorkellers appearing as sharks and other sea creatures as well as fairies, superheroes and spacemen. Comic wigs and hats abound – in fact there’s a prize for the ‘Best Dressed
38 connectionmags.co.uk
Helmet’ for people taking part in the Triathlon, which combines bog snorkelling with bike riding and running. looks familiar? Bog snorkelling’s profile received a boost last year thanks to the BBC’s Oneness campaign, which featured active community groups from across the UK. Amongst the skaters, cavers and bhangra dancers included in the campaign, you may have spotted a small gathering of snorkellers clad in fancy dress, posing on a grassy bank before plunging, fullyclothed, into the water below. Appropriately, this short ‘ident’ was used to flag up the BBC’s comedy and light entertainment shows. It was filmed in Llanwrtyd Wells in Wales, where the World Bog Snorkelling Championships are held in August each year. This sleepy Welsh town lays claim to the title ‘The home of bog snorkelling’, as the sport was invented there in 1976, following a pub conversation between a few locals intent on finding a new tourist attraction. and that’s not all … Llanwrtyd Wells’ ambition to become a national hub for quirky sporting events took another step forward in 2012, with the
/theconnectionmag
creation of the World Alternative Games. Although the Games were inspired by the London 2012 Olympics and claim to uphold the ‘Corinthian spirit’ in all their events, the activities on offer at Llanwrtyd Wells are about as far removed from the Olympic programme as it’s possible to get. As well as bog snorkelling, medals are awarded for bathtubbing, belly-flopping, worm charming, wife carrying and husband dragging. Last year’s events even included a category entitled ‘Saving Donald Trump’, which featured an inflatable version of the US president. Although it is a relatively new ‘sport’, bog snorkelling has all the good humour and anarchic energy of other quintessentially British events such as pancake racing, tar barrel racing and cheese rolling, and just like those activities it requires a certain amount of skill and effort to compete successfully. Bog snorkelling may not be up there with the classic Olympic sports, but it more than makes up for that in terms of the enjoyment it generates, not to mention the good causes it helps through fundraising. You can find out more about bog snorkelling and related events at worldalternativegames.co.uk.

If the farmer agrees, the rogue gang arrive quickly, spread the tarmac and then demand thousands of pounds with menaces! BE ALERT - A number of people have been reporting that there are quite a few pickpockets around. I know this may seem obvious, but please make sure your wallet and purses are zipped up in bags, or in pockets which are difficult for people to access. Be especially careful when in crowded places. BE ALERT at all times. The next meeting of NHW Alcester will be held on Tuesday 6 February, 7.30pm at St Nicholas Church House. Government Schemes for First-Time Buyers and Existing Homeowners
If you are an existing homeowner wanting to move up the property ladder, or are looking to buy your first home, a number of government schemes could help you make that investment. From boosting your savings for a deposit to buying a share in a property, take a look below at the main government initiatives to find one that suits your circumstances. help to buy isa Eligibility • First-time buyers only. • Purchase price of up to £250,000 (£450,000 in London). • You must live in the property. • It must be your only home. How it works The government boosts your Help to Buy ISA savings by 25%, up to a maximum of £3,000, so for every £100 you save into the ISA you will receive an additional £25 from the government. If you and a partner are saving for your first home together, you can each open a Help to Buy ISA and take advantage of a savings boost of up to £6,000 in total. equity loan (in england) Eligibility • Applies to new-builds only. • First-time buyers and
46 connectionmags.co.uk
existing homeowners may be eligible. • Property purchase price up to £600,000 in England. • You must live in the property, and not sub-let it. • It must be your only property. • The home must be purchased from a registered Help to Buy builder. • You cannot use a partexchange deal on your old home. How it works Also known as shared equity, you own your home using the equity loan scheme, purchasing a proportion of the property up front with the remainder being paid back over a pre-agreed term. shared ownership Eligibility You may be eligible for the Shared Ownership scheme if your annual household income is £80,000 or less (£90,000 or less in London) and: • This is your first home. • You have been a homeowner, but are now unable to afford a property. • You already use the shared ownership scheme. How it works You purchase between 25% and 75% of the property outright and pay a subsidised rent on the outstanding portion. You may be able to purchase more shares until you own the whole property, and the rent is reduced proportionately. starter home scheme The Starter Home scheme is the latest government initiative to help first-time buyers in England onto the property
/theconnectionmag
ladder. Although not yet fully up and running, these are the latest eligibility criteria and details known. Eligibility • First-time buyers aged between 23 and 40. • Maximum household income of £80,000 (£90,000 in London). • Must have a mortgage. • There will be restrictions on the resale or letting of the property for 15 years after purchase. How it works The government is offering a minimum discount of 20% on a property’s market value, so purchasers will need a mortgage of up to 80%. The purchase price after the discount can be up to £250,000 (£450,000 in London). Starter homes under this scheme will be exempt from the Community Infrastructure Levy, which house builders normally have to pay to local authorities. What has caused a housing crisis in recent years? A rise in the UK population, falling numbers of new-build properties and high prices in certain areas of the country have all combined to create a dire need for affordable housing. If you are in this situation, hopefully one of these schemes will help you on to the property ladder sooner rather than later. www.helptobuy.gov.uk www.ownyourhome.gov.uk/ scheme/starter-homes www.thebureauinvestigates. com/explainers/what-isaffordable-housing-a-bureauguide

Beijing Temple of Heaven By Solange Hando All glistening blue and gold, the magnificent Temple of Heaven rises, almost defiantly, in modern Beijing, no longer a place of worship but still recalling the religious faith of the great emperors. It was built in the early 15th century by Emperor Yongle, at the same time as the Forbidden City but much larger to befit a celestial abode. Come the winter solstice, the Emperor, or ‘Son of Heaven’, would venture out of his secluded palace and make his way to the temple in a most splendid procession no commoner was allowed to watch. There he prayed for guidance and good harvests, worshipping Heaven in an ancient tradition which continued to blossom for many more centuries. The complex was extended and protected by inner and outer walls. Step through one of the gates marking the compass points and in the cool oasis of ‘Tiantan’, you are greeted by Chinese gardens, pine woods and over 90 buildings sprinkled like magic among white marble steps and balustrades. Yet nothing here is left to chance as symbolism flows everywhere, from the use of numbers - 9 representing the Emperor, to the choice of shapes - circular
48 connectionmags.co.uk
for heaven, square for the earth, or colours - yellow for the Emperor, blue for the sky. The three main groups are on a north-south axis, starting at the very top with the Temple of Prayer for Good Harvests. Topped by a triple-eaved umbrella roof, this is a lovely circular structure, made of wood without nails. It was destroyed by lightning in 1889 but rebuilt in the original Ming style. According to Feng Shui experts, it stands on the spot where Heaven meets Earth. Just east of the hall, the Seven Stars recall the Taishan peaks, also dedicated to Heaven worship. From this northern point, a Sacred Way leads to the second group, the Imperial Vault of Heaven where imperial ancestors were invoked during the winter solstice. The surrounding Echo Wall carried prayers from end to end and even today the slightest whisper will travel around and amaze visitors. To the south, you reach the awesome Circular Mound Altar, a five-metre high marble structure which makes full use of the imperial number, with 81 (9x9) stones on the 9th ring. Balustrades were designed to amplify the sound from the
/theconnectionmag
upper terrace, while in the centre the ‘Heart of Heaven’ is a round slate where animals were offered in sacrifice. After the ceremony, the Emperor would retire to the Palace of Abstinence and fast to complete his mediation between Heaven and Earth. His life depended on it. Only bountiful harvests would ensure continued respect from the Court and common people. Standing by the sacrificial altar in the early morning, before the crowds arrive, it is easy to imagine the majestic imperial procession, the glowing costumes, the Divine Music sending shivers down your spine. But today, no one comes here for prayers or offerings, at least not openly. Visitors compete for the best photo spot while locals relax in the 273 ha public park. There are picnics in the shade, multi-coloured kites pirouetting through the air, opera singers, ballroom dancers and tai chi enthusiasts lost in a world of their own. The 500 year old cypress tree, with ‘9 dragon branches’, doesn’t seem to mind - for this is the world’s largest temple complex for sacrificial offerings to Heaven and in the words of UNESCO, a unique ‘masterpiece of architecture and landscape design.’

With the increasing demands placed upon open spaces in the competitive race to build houses, Alcester Councillors have strived to work with major stake holders to take ownership, preserve and protect green open space wherever possible. Early in the process, Councillors Eric Payne and Mike Gittus along with Chris Wright (former Town Clerk to ATC) examined aerial images of the community and saw that there was a clear green river corridor snaking through Alcester. It was this revelation that has driven Alcester forward to begin purchasing, preserving and protecting these areas in perpetuity.
50 connectionmags.co.uk
Part of the process of ‘preservation for ever’, involved working closely with The National Playing Fields Association, now known as ‘Fields in Trust’. Four distinct areas have been registered with Fields in Trust, these being Jubilee Field, the Nature Reserve, Abbey Fields and just recently Centenary Field. Each of these areas have a distinct and different ‘Health and Wellbeing Offer’. • Managed Recreation • River Facilities • Allotments • Beautiful Open Space Walks in natural settings
In recognition of the close working relationship between Alcester Town Council and Fields in Trust, the Council was nominated for the award of ‘Local authority Partner of the Year’. The Council was delighted to win this prestigious award at a ceremony held at Lords Cricket Ground.
Alcester Town Council has been identified as leaders in ‘the field’ of green open space protection. Alcester continues to put its community first when considering the improvement of health and well-being by registering and improving its recreational spaces within its ownership.

Fighting Colds and Flu: Myths and Magic Cures
Colds can make life miserable and flu can make us quite ill. But which cold and flu facts are true, and are there really any cures? if you have a high temperature, it’s the flu MYTH. Colds can sometimes cause a high temperature, although it’s usually short-lived and not above 38oC. However, sweats and chills normally indicate flu. it’s pointless to avoid someone with a cold or flu. You’ll get it anyway. MYTH. Flu and colds are highly contagious, spread by air and direct contact, but you can stay germ-free by avoiding sufferers or by both practising good hygiene. • Clean hands and high-contact surfaces regularly (e.g. door handles, touchscreens), especially after touching the nose or mouth. • Don’t share cutlery, cups or towels. • Ensure the contagious person has tissues nearby to catch coughs and sneezes, and bin them immediately. They should use the ’vampire’ cough (into the inside of their elbow) if they’re caught tissueless.

The flu vaccine doesn’t always prevent flu, so it’s not worth having. TRUTH and MYTH. Flu vaccines are produced in advance, so experts must predict the three or four flu strains that will be prevalent next winter. While you may catch an unexpected or rarer flu strain you’re not protected from, the vaccine will protect you from most strains you’ll encounter. It’s vital if you’re vulnerable or have low immunity, e.g. if you’re a carer, over 65, pregnant or have an existing medical condition. getting very wet and/or cold can give you a cold or the flu. MYTH (obviously). However, cold and wet conditions can put your body under stress, making it more vulnerable to germs. The flu vaccine gives you flu MYTH. The vaccine contains inactive viruses, but it may cause a temperature and aching for a while. If you’ve had a cold or flu for a while, you need antibiotics MYTH. Your doctor may give in and prescribe them, although they know antibiotics don’t kill viruses. When a patient is ‘cured’ after a week’s antibiotics, in truth that extra week just allowed them to finally fight off their virus. Antibiotics are only useful if you get a secondary bacterial infection. magic cures Research says: Prevention. Good hygiene works. boost your immune system to help you resist viruses or fight

them off by reducing stress and getting adequate sleep. Regular zinc reduces the number of colds children get and should work for adults too. Regular probiotics and garlic may have some preventative effect, but research is sketchy. Vitamin C and echinacea really don’t prevent colds and any symptom reduction is negligible to nonexistent. However, Vitamin C may be of limited benefit to people already under physical stress (e.g. marathon runners). decongestants and antihistamines: when used separately, they have very little or no effect. However, when used together, particularly with painkillers, they may cause a slight improvement in symptoms. ipratropium bromide (rinatec) nasal spray does seem to alleviate symptoms, particularly a runny nose. cough suppressants: Any benefits are negligible. Vapour rubs do seem to alleviate night time cough a little and improve sleep, but in studies over 25% of users reported burning itching sensation at the application area. nsaids (Non-steroidal antiinflammatories, e.g. ibuprofen) can reduce fever and help with aches and pains. If you have a cold or flu, stay hydrated, alleviate the symptoms and take heart - researchers are working to modify peptides that can combat cold viruses.
