Welcome ... to the July/August Connection
T
he summer holidays are upon us. For us at Connection HQ, that means we skip a month and will return at the end of August with our September edition. We leave for our summer holidays on a sunny note, looking forward to time with a couple of very weary young children once schools and nurseries break up, and getting to watch how tall our recentlyplanted sunflowers grow over the coming weeks. For those of you who would prefer something a little more fragrant in your flower beds, our gardening article (p.20) has some great suggestions. There’s also a number of gardening and flower groups/events mentioned in our Community pages (p.56, 58) to further keep gardening enthusiasts busy. There’s plenty of other community groups, notices and activities to be found, like little nuggets of treasure throughout the magazine, one of which being Bidford Area Community Choir’s performance on 30th June (yes, I know - last month’s news, but many of you will receive this magazine in time!). If the newspaper headlines are to be believed, we’re due something of a heatwave. “Hooray”, I hear some of you cheer. Well, don’t forget your suncream! There’s essential summer skincare advice on page 32, and we’re lucky to feature a couple of other local writers this month: Runners – both seasoned and beginners – can find out how to up their game this month with advice from Run Sally Run (p.48); and Heads Up Now explains why anger is not a problem (p.14). We have puzzles to keep your brain in gear whilst in holiday mode, for big and little kids (p.6, 30, 46), or if you’d rather a physical workout over a mental one, why not give tennis a go? Bidford Tennis Club are looking for new members (p.12) and would love to meet you. There’s some job listings on pages 18-19 & 43 and the opportunity for university and college applicants to apply for educational awards with the Perkins Trust (p.31). ‘View from the boundary’ returns with local cricket news (p.36), but no football article until September’s edition. We’ll leave you to form your own opinions on all things ‘World Cup’! With that, we wish you a fantastic summer. Until September...

Sweet Recipe Berry & Chocolate Pavlovas These divine individual pavlovas are ideal for a summer dessert. You can make the meringues in advance then layer with fruit and cream a couple of hours before serving.
Ingredients: • 4 large egg whites • 225g caster sugar • 1 tsp cornflour • 1tsp white wine vinegar • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 500g fresh strawberries • 200g fresh raspberries • 25g icing sugar, sifted, plus extra to serve • 2 tsp lemon juice • 300ml double cream, softly whipped • 200g Greek yoghurt • Chocolate curls, to decorate
Makes 4 Ready in 2 hours
TIP
The unfilled meringues will keep in a an airtight container for 3-4 days.
10 connectionmags.co.uk
1. Preheat the oven to 150°C, fan 130C, Gas Mark 1.
Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Draw six 9 cm circles on each sheet of baking paper. Turn the paper over.
2. Using an electric food mixer whisk the egg whites in a clean grease-free bowl until stiff. Gradually whisk in the sugar, one tablespoon at a time, whisking well after each addition to make a firm and glossy meringue.
3. Blend the cornflour, vinegar and vanilla extract
together in a small bowl and fold into the meringue. Divide the meringue between the marked circles.
4. Bake for 45 minutes - 1 hour until the meringues are crisp and dry on the outside. Turn the oven off and leave them to cool completely in the oven with the door slightly open.
5. Hull and chop most of the strawberries (reserving
about 8 for decoration). Place in a food processor or blender with half the raspberries and pulse to make a thick puree. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the icing sugar and lemon juice. Fold the yogurt into the cream.
6. Carefully remove the meringues from the baking
paper. Sandwich the meringues together in stacks of three with cream and the fruit puree. Top with the reserved strawberries and remaining raspberries and decorate with chocolate curls. Dust with icing sugar just before serving.

#GetTheHeadsUp
I
want to talk about anger, because we are confused by this. I’ve worked as a coach with hundreds of teenagers, and many adults, over the last 20 years and this issue comes up a lot. Especially for us guys, but not exclusively. It is not “anger management” that we need, it is “anger understanding”. “I’ve got this anger problem” a 15 year old boy says to me the other day. Then I listen to his story and I think, “you know, this guy has a lot of good reasons to feel angry.” The first thing is this: Stop telling yourself off for feeling angry. There is nothing wrong with you IF you ever feel angry. As Augustine of Hippo said, “Hope has two daughters: Anger at how things are and Courage to change them.” Anger is a ‘change emotion’. Pretty useful huh? So, where are we going wrong with this? When we deal with anger as ‘a problem to be fixed’ or ‘an emotion to deny or get rid of’, we discard the intrinsic intelligence of the emotion. Emotions are not good or bad, right or wrong. They can, I suggest, be pleasant or unpleasant. Most people prefer feeling elated than anxious, right? And all your emotions are intelligent - they give us visceral clues, in the bones, fibres and vibes of our physical body - about what’s going on. For many of us we need to get out of our heads and into our bodies more. Anger has something to teach us (as does anxiety). Feeling angry is not a problem. Acting aggressive is. Read that again, because that’s another point of confusion right there. It is okay to feel the anger fully. Go into it, breathe it in. If you need to express it immediately, do so safely by stamping the ground rather than punching a wall. Stamping the ground will jolt you awake. Punching a wall…well, the wall will win. I promise you. Or grunt for 10 seconds. These are short term safety valves. They are not ‘being rude’, they are ‘feeling the feeling’. Parents, please take note of this. Stop telling your children off for ‘feeling angry’ and start understanding this next point. Feeling angry is connected to values. What matters to you? Or your kids? Write a list,
go on, 10 things that matter to you, or them. Rank them 1 to 10. Let me place a bet - if any of those things, whether tangible (like a car, phone or wallet) or intangible (like being respected, or keeping people safe, or being understood, or the experience of friendship) - if ANY of those things are put under threat by somebody or something, guess what? You are not going to lean back and feel chilled. You WILL feel angry, and you should. You will probably feel it in your stomach. Some behaviours will show up maybe in a tightened jaw or fist or shoulders, or tears. Or grunting. Sure, for some teens, grunting becomes their primary means of communication. So here’s the thing I want to say: Stop trying to not feel angry about important stuff. It’s okay. Anger tells you - beyond the filters of the rational mind - what really matters to you. Okay, for this 15 year old lad his X-box was way too high up on his Top Ten List, where his GCSE revision needed to be. But we talked about that. When he figured out - for himself (that’s what a coach helps a person do) that his school grades also mattered, and wanting to be a mechanic also mattered to him, then he noticed how silly it looked having his X-box as the number 1 thing in his life. Teens look short-term, whereas us adults think of the ramifications for the next 42 years. When we adjust what matters to us (which we have to do for ourselves, other people cannot and must not do that change for us - it just doesn’t work that way) - when we own this change, our emotional wiring and behavioural reactions also change. Ta-da! - the anger isn’t a problem to be managed, it is an intelligent emotion being listened to. In the light of understanding what it wants to say, direct assertive action can be taken to recover that loss, for example, keeping people safe, or respectful dialogue, or agreeing (and writing down) boundaries about Revision vs. X-box time. Anger becomes a gateway to change. Until you listen to what an angry feeling is telling you, it will linger. It is not telling you to act angry. It is inviting you to understand, and then take action. Where’s the problem now?

Gardening Essential Scent
by Pippa Greenwood Unusually low temperatures can also cause scent levels to drop. So bear this in mind when choosing where to put your perfumed plants.
No matter how good your garden may look, without scent it is missing a vital ingredient – and you don’t have to sacrifice colour and texture when using perfumed plants, as many heavily-scented flowers are also really good-looking. Perfume plays a role in plant evolution and is often used to attract attention to the flower and thus entice a suitable pollinator. The insect enjoys the flower’s nectar and pollinates it in the process, increasing the chances of it producing a new generation. Many plants produce an alluring perfume during the evening or night-time, and at this time of day moths can be useful pollinators, especially during the summer months. So although a plant like the sweetly-perfumed nightscented stock may not have flamboyant flowers, it will be successfully pollinated. Weather conditions can alter the level of perfume that reaches us, and in a wind-swept spot the perfume can literally be blown away.
20 connectionmags.co.uk
Smaller or more subtly-scented plants, such as some of the polyanthus or the miniature iris, should be planted in raised areas or in pots – otherwise their perfume can easily pass you by! A small pergola makes a great home for perfumed climbers, and what could be lovelier than to wander from one part of the garden to another via a tunnel of perfume? Perfumed roses such as the repeat flowering climbers ‘Ena Harkness’ (red) or ‘New Dawn’ (pale, dusky pink) or ‘Zephirine Drouhin’ (brightest pink) have flexible stems and are ideal. Place smaller perfumed plants such as ‘Nemesia Fragrant Cloud’ or lavenders into window boxes or wall baskets, and enjoy their wonderful perfume in your house as it wafts in through windows left ajar. For sitting out after sundown, plant flowers that are at their best in the evening. For a warm summer’s evening the small creamy-white flowers of night-scented stock take some beating, or try the nightperfumed nicotianas or tobacco
/theconnectionmag
plants such as Nicotiana sylvestris. Combine the vibrant colours of bedding plants with some scented stunners in patio pots and other containers. How about some hyacinths or the Heliotrope or cherry pie, with its flowers in white or shades of purple which will produce perfume throughout the summer? Disguise a less-than-attractive house or garage wall with wall shrubs; in a sunny spot the blue-flowered Ceaonothus produces a distinctly honeyperfumed scent, or on welldrained soil the pineapple broom Cytissus batanderei looks and smells sensational, with its lovely silvery-coloured foliage, bright yellow flowers and pineapple-scented blooms. Create an arbour from a kit or from scratch and clothe it in perfumed climbers such as sweetly-scented roses or, in a shadier spot, spicily-scented honeysuckle. Sitting in the shade of the plants with their flowers’ scents all around is pure heaven! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! Or why not book Pippa for a gardening talk?

Stay safe in the sun this summer... What causes a tan?
The dark pigment that gives your skin its natural colour is called melanin and is made by pigment cells called melanocytes. After you have been out in the sun the melanocytes produce more melanin trying to absorb more UV radiation and so your skin becomes darker.
Why should I be careful in the sun?
A bit of sun is good for us but if we overdo it we can get sunburn, photosensitive rashes and prickly heat. Many people assume that a tan is a sign of health, but it actually means our skin has been harmed by UV radiation and is trying to defend itself against further damage. Extensive exposure to the sun can increase your risk of developing skin cancer (100,000 new cases annually). In more than 4 out of 5 cases it is a preventable disease.
How should I apply sunscreen?
What are Ultra-Violet A&B rays?
UVA radiation affects the elastin in your skin and leads to wrinkles and sun induced ageing (leathery skin and brown pigmentation) as well as skin cancer. UVB radiation is most responsible for sunburn and has strong links to malignant melanoma and basal cell carcinoma risk. A sun screen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) will help block UVB rays and prevent your skin from burning.
Sunscreens in the UK
Sunscreens are labelled with an SPF which shows the level of protection against UVB and are rated on a scale of 2 to 50+ The British Association of Dermatologists recommends sunscreen of SPF 30 as well as protective shade and clothing. Sunscreens also display a UVA star rating ranging from to
Studies have found that most people apply less than half of the amount required to provide the level of protection indicated on the sunscreen packaging. Around 35ml (6-8 teaspoons/2 tablespoons) of sun lotion is needed to cover the body of an averaged size adult and achieve the stated SPF. Only using half the required amount can actually reduce the protection by as much as two-thirds. Sunscreen needs to be applied twice if you plan to be out in the sun long enough to risk burning: 30 minutes before you go out to allow it to dry then again just before you go out. Areas such as the back and sides of the neck, temple and ears are commonly missed so you need to apply it generously and be careful not to miss patches. Also apply it to your head if you have thinning or have no hair (a wide-brimmed hat is better).
Top sun safety tips
Protect your skin with clothing: a hat, t-shirt and sunglasses (look for the CE mark). Use a high protection sunscreen - at least SPF 30 with high UVA protection plus. Apply sunscreen liberally, frequently and straight after you have been in the water, and following towel drying, sweating or when it may have rubbed off. KEEP BABIES AND YOUNG CHILDREN OUT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT. Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm when it is sunny. Tell your doctor of any changes to a mole.

Motoring
By James Baggott
The Best Convertibles For Under £2,000 pricier parts, so choose carefully – a decent servicing history is essential. An early 2000s SLK should be well-equipped, with electronicallyadjustable seats and cruise control.
With summer in full swing, if you want a drop-top to provide that wind-in-your-hair experience we’ve picked out some of the best convertibles for under £2,000. MG TF Readily available and wellpriced, most MG TF’s come with a peppy 1.8-litre engine and all have a folding cloth roof. It’s still a relatively handsome looking car that seems to have aged well, and we found a number for well under our £2,000 budget. Citroen C3 Pluriel Designed to be five cars in one, the C3 Pluriel wasn’t successful, meaning you can pick up decent used examples and, though they may not have a sports car design, you still get that drop-top experience very cheaply. Most cars get alloy wheels and air conditioning, but make sure the folding roof functions correctly. Mercedes SLK Buying a used Mercedes can mean higher repair costs and
34 connectionmags.co.uk
Toyota MR2 For no-frills, involving motoring, the little MR2 provides exciting performance from a 1.8-litre engine, and its compact size makes it feel nimble on the road. The lack of any real boot does make it impractical but there are plenty of reasonable examples available within budget. Mazda MX-5 The MX-5 is a reliable, cheapto-repair convertible and is a go-to choice for those who want a relatively involving drive coupled with compact dimensions. Rust is an issue, particularly on early models, but a clean example will provide miles of trouble-free motoring.
Saab 9-3 The 9-3 convertible is a comfortable and spacious drop-top, and there are plenty of spare parts and components available should you need replacements, despite Saab’s now defunct status. Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet Most Bugs come comprehensively equipped, with air conditioning and alloy wheels just some of the extras you’ll find fitted, and the Beetle is a decent and reliable soft-top. BMW 3 Series Convertible (E46) There are many examples of 3 Series convertibles to be found at this budget. Most common are E46 models, which are sturdy and excellent to drive. A variety of engines are available too, with even the top end straight-six models well in this price bracket. Double check the arches as these are prone to rust. In addition, turn the steering lock to lock while travelling at low speed and listen out for any troubling knocking noises.
Mini Convertible The ‘new’ Mini has proved to be immensely popular, and the convertible version was snapped up as a result of its cutesy styling and reasonably powerful range of engines.
Audi TT Roadster There aren’t many about in this price range, but the Audi TT Roadster is a fine option. Strong build quality, reliable engines and quirky styling mean that this soft-top still looks and feels fresh today.
Available well within our £2,000 budget, make sure that the interior is straight, and listen for strange noises from the costly-to-replace power steering pump.
At this price you’ll be looking at a high-mileage example, but providing it’s got a decent service history there’s no reason why these can’t be hassle-free convertibles.

View From The Boundary
W
ell, it finally looks like summer has arrived. The weather has been slowly improving over the past few weeks, and as we take a break for a month the cricket action seams to be warming up too. At the time of writing, England have just set an unwanted record in losing their first ever match to the auld enemy, Scotland. What a game for the spectator, but hardly the best preparation for a summer of One Day Internationals and the World Cup early next year. Locally, our league sides have all had a few ups and downs, with no-one really staking a huge claim for honours. In the Cotswold Hills League Premier Divison, Alcester & Ragley have fallen away after their strong start and are now in sixth spot, one place above local rivals Exhall & Wixford.
Temple Grafton are struggling in Division Two, having won just two matches. Great Alne and Bidford are towards the bottom of the table in Division Four; however it’s in this league where Exhall & Wixford’s second string (featuring a few wily old veterans) are shining; currently the pick of the local sides in second place. Over in the Worcestershire League there are contrasting fortunes for Harvington and Cookhill in Divison Five; Cookhill are languishing at the bottom of the table having won just once, whilst Harvington are a handful of points outside of the promotion spots in third place. So, I’ll be back in the September edition when we should know a little more about who may be claiming some silverware this summer!

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ALCESTER Phishing, Smishing, Vishing? The problems that TSB customers are currently experiencing highlights that there are more and more fraudsters purporting to be from reputable companies in order to trick individuals into revealing personal information such as passwords and financial information. They do this by sending out fake email messages (phishing), fake text messages (smishing) and fake phone calls (vishing). Protect Yourself: Don’t assume an email or text or phone call is authentic: Always question uninvited approaches in case it’s a scam. Phone numbers and email addresses can be spoofed, so always contact the company directly via a known email or phone number (such as the one on the back of your bank card). Clicking on links/files: Don’t be tricked into giving a fraudster access to your personal or financial details. Never automatically click on a link in an unexpected text or email nor an attachment. Remember, a genuine bank or organisation will never contact you out of the blue to ask for your full PIN or password. If you have received a suspicious text email or telephone call or you have been a victim of fraud or cyber crime please do not respond to it, report it to Action Fraud : https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_phishing or by calling 0300 123 2040. Every Report Matters. Fire Safety, Safe and Well Visit. This is a FREE visit to your home if the fire service has not visited in the last 2 years. It is a comprehensive and detailed questionnaire to help keep you and your family safe. If you have smoke alarms, they will check they are working and sited correctly. If not, they will fit smoke detectors where required, again free of charge. The whole visit will make you think very carefully, not only about hazards which are obvious but also the various things you have in the house which might make you vulnerable, e.g. trip hazards, toasters on work surfaces but under overhanging cupboards, etc. (it is what is in the toaster, not the toaster itself, which sets on fire.) To make an appointment please
phone 01789 762490 and speak to the Watch Commander, Paul Vale, or in his absence the Duty Commander. The whole visit is thoroughly recommended and will make you much more aware. The Alcester Fire Service have agreed to attend the next NHW Alcester meeting on Wednesday 3 October to give details about their services and to offer general advice. The next meeting of NHW Alcester will be held on Wednesday 3 October, 7.30pm at St Nicholas Church House, Butter Street. t is a commonly held belief that to improve your running performance you need to run, a lot. Wrong. Although every run you do will help to improve your aerobic capacity, many runners find a comfortable pace to train at and stay there, inadvertently inhibiting their ability to go further or faster. By incorporating different forms of exercise into your fitness routine you will not only improve your muscle strength and reduce your risk of injury but you will also make a huge difference to your overall running efficiency. To get your body working optimally try shaking up your training and including one or two of the following activities:
Cycling A great way to get in some cardio but with much lower impact to give your body a bit of break. Cycling can help strengthen the connective tissue of the knees, hips, and ankles reducing your risk of a running injury. Different types of cycling workouts can aid in different parts of running too. Standing on your pedals will imitate the muscle work of running while spinning will improve your cadence. Pilates Balance, posture, core strength and flexibility are vital for runners so incorporating a weekly pilates class will tick all these boxes and help to improve your overall performance. For those among us who don’t stretch enough this is a great one to do. Swimming As a non-weight bearing exercise, swimming is a brilliant activity to give your joints a break while improving your leg strength and aerobic fitness. If you get bored going back and forth try doing a variety of strokes, backstroke is great for opening

up the shoulders and chest. If you’re suffering from knee pain avoid breaststroke as the outward kick motion can put added stress on the tendons and ligaments on the inside of the knee. HIIT High Intensity Interval Training - giving you a great full-body workout with a series of short intense repetitions. Classes usually range from 20-30 mins or try some workouts on YouTube at home. You don’t need any equipment or much space and you can strengthen and tone the muscles as you need.

Alcester Town Council JULY/AUGUST 2018
Alcester War Memorial Town Hall It was in 1618 that the Lord of the Manor of Alcester, Sir Fulke Greville III, provided the sum of £300 for the building of a market hall. In 2018 we are celebrating the 400-year-old history of a building that has become an iconic part of Alcester.
To celebrate 400 years, a series of events, talks and Open Days are being held through the year. The next Open Days are on Saturday the 11, 18 and 25 August. All are welcome to come along and explore the history of this magnificent Grade I listed building. Today, the Alcester War Memorial Town Hall is a community building, managed on behalf of the town’s residents by the trustees. Changes have brought the facilities, including the kitchen, up to modern standards and it is available for hire as a unique venue for all occasions and events. Our website: alcestertownhall.org.uk
Town Council Meetings
The building that we know today has evolved and changed over the centuries. Originally a single storey open-sided market hall built of limestone and local sandstone; a timber-framed upper floor was added in 1641. Market traders would have set up their stalls in the space between the pillars whilst Sir Fulke’s manorial court checked the produce and charged a market toll. The building hosted a Court which tried minor criminals. The town stocks and the oak door with iron bars of the prisoner’s cell are on display in the hall. In 1765, following a petition from townspeople, Francis Greville, 1st Earl of Warwick, revoked all market tolls payable to him on condition that the people of Alcester kept the hall in good repair. In 1919 the town of Alcester raised £640 by public subscription to purchase the hall and it became the Alcester War Memorial Town Hall in memory of those who had given their lives for their country.
