As I sit here writing, it’s blowing a gale outside. Storm Ali is on her way and it’s certainly feeling very autumnal all of a sudden. Our household is finding it harder to wake up in the mornings with the slightly darker starts (although it could also be to do with our nightmare-suffering 3 year old keeping us awake a lot at night), and our sleep patterns will change once again when the clocks go back on Sunday 28 October. We’ve had a busy month here again at Connection HQ, with a wealth of wonderful local businesses advertising and plenty of community listings submitted for our What’s On pages (p.5658). I’m also very excited about our first review. We visited The Four Alls in Welford and ate so much we nearly burst, but managed to keep it together to write about the experience (p.14). Foodies will probably also be keen to ensure they support the Alcester Food Festival on 20th October (p.12), as well as Rotary’s Big Breakfasts (p.57) and the other local pubs advertising throughout. We continue to bring you newsletters from Alcester Town Council (p.50) and Bidford Parish Council (p.52) with information from them and dates of their various meetings, as well as a special notice from Bidford History Society regarding a new plaque for the Bidford War Memorial (p.53). I’d also like to highlight that this is the deadline month for applications to both Perkins Trust and the Bidford Parochial Charities for educational grants (p.59). Our articles this month include advice on finance for children (p. 40), a delicious lemon & herb chicken roast recipe (p.10), our final cricket editorial of the season (p.36), ‘Back of the Net’ (p.38), a guide to rugged cars (p.34), beautiful bulb gardening advice (p.20) and Heads Up Now consider the importance to ‘be here now’ (p.16). You can also find out more about local choir, Tarantara, on page 57. Our next edition will hold details of local Remembrance Services and probably various bonfires & fireworks displays, so please get in touch if you have an event to be listed. Until next month...

ONE PAN LEMON AND HERB CHICKEN ROAST Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes

Serves 4

A quick and easy roast for midweek or Sunday lunch with hardly any washing up! Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/ gas mark 6. Place the butter in a bowl and beat in the garlic, mixed herbs and the zest and 1 tbsp juice from one of the lemons. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

• 50g butter, softened • 2 garlic cloves,

crushed

• 3 tbsp fresh

chopped mixed herbs (see Tip)

• 2 lemons • Salt and freshly

ground black pepper

• 8 chicken thigh

portions

• 500g baby potatoes,

halved

• 2 tbsp virgin olive oil • 4 sprigs fresh

rosemary, broken into small sprigs

10 connectionmags.co.uk

Ease the skin away from the chicken thigh portions and gently push about 1 tsp of the herb and garlic butter under the skin of each portion then smooth the skin back down. Place all the chicken portions in a large roasting tin. Toss the potatoes in half the olive oil and season. Scatter around the chicken along with the rosemary sprigs. Cut the second lemon into thin wedges and nestle them in between then chicken and potatoes. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Roast in the pre-heated oven for 55 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes until the chicken is golden and cooked though and the potatoes are crisp and tender, turning the potatoes and basting the chicken with the pan juices once or twice. Serve from the roasting tin with steamed green vegetables, if liked. TIP You can use any combination of mixed herbs for the garlic and herb butter – thyme, parsley and oregano all go particularly well with chicken. Or just choose one strongly flavoured herb such as tarragon.

Review

O

THE FOUR ALLS, WELFORD-ON-AVON

ver the course of a year, I’ve visited The Four Alls at Welford-on-Avon a grand total of three times. On the first occasion, I wandered in to deliver some magazines to the then-manager, and I was overwhelmed by two aspects: firstly, the size of the building, which I’d noted from driving past numerous times over the years, and secondly, just how dark it felt inside. Not long after this visit, I read news of a refurbishment at the property and wondered how on earth anybody would set about tackling such a large space, albeit one with an undoubtedly enviable riverside position. My subsquent visits have been post-refurbishment, and I am amazed at how Oakman Inns have transformed the premises into a welcoming combination of open dining space with cosy nooks and side rooms for a more intimate drinking and dining experience. Not surprising given the expenditure on the project – a whopping £1.9m – that has seen the arrival of an open plan kitchen, wooddecked ceilings, beautiful oversized light fittings, and tasteful colour schemes to complement each area – the dark green and mustard yellow upholstered seating being a particular favourite of mine. After enjoying their launch evening in June, I visited again in September with my husband for a muchneeded and very rare evening meal away from our brood of two young children. The excitement of eating somewhere with ambient lighting and possibly even conversation (child-focussed, probably, but still) – away from the glare of another Netflix boxset and a plate of something wearily-prepared balanced on our laps – was palpable. We arrived promptly after all but sprinting from our house when the babysitter arrived (we’d not had an evening out for some time) and were greeted by Deputy Manager, Rhiannon, who was welcoming, smiley and showed us through to our table, one of five along the glazed extension in the main dining area, that delivers much needed sunlight during the day - something that the previous decor was sorely missing. For this evening, the pretty fairy lights draped

around the trees a few metres outside were setting enough for this early autumn evening meal. I’m the kind of diner who likes “Mocktail?!” to evaluate a menu prior to I hear some of visiting the venue, even if I do change my mind a dozen my gin-swigging times before my final order, buddies cry with but I knew that my goal for horror... the night was to sample at least one mocktail and the scotch egg starter. “Mocktail?” I hear some of my gin-swigging buddies cry with horror. Well, yes... ‘Spice & Ice’, a refreshing combination of mango, lime, cucumber, honey and ginger beer quite tickled my fancy and the fiery aftertaste was just what I needed to wash away the after taste of a long day and kickstart the meal. However, for anyone wishing to begin with something slightly more boozy, the spirit, cocktail and wine menus are extensive and there’s plenty of choice for anyone who’s recently hopped on the gin-loving bandwagon, in addition to a smaller number of beers – bottled and on tap. Our waitress for the evening – friendly, efficient and patient when I took forever to decide on a main course – made a number of recommendations and we settled on the Saltimbocca Scotch Egg (as planned) and Calamari to start, followed by the pork belly (roasted for 12 hours) and rib eye steak. I really did consider one of the very tempting vegan dishes (the

#GetTheHeadsUp What happened was this:

With the formal point-scoring track and field events done – where dozens of children had hurdled, shot and sprinted for all their worth – it came to the final novelty event of the day: a three-legged race. The temptation to strap an ankle to that of another person and dash fifty metres was too much to resist for many. It sounds easy. But there’s a reason we are not (usually) born with three legs. As the race unfolded, some finished intact, but there was one pair for whom the strapping got terribly twisted up. The girl, still standing, drove onward, ever-onward (you can imagine it, right?) to the finish line, yanking her leg with force. Meanwhile, a boy smaller than herself, strapped to her ankle, bounced with bottom bumping, one hand grasping the grass for help, the other trying to untangle the strap. They finished safely, but in last place. What has this to do with looking after our own mental health? Because some of us – maybe more than will admit – wake up still ‘attached’ to yesterday. As if in that moment when our feet touch the bedroom floor, some devious fairy straps yesterday’s conversations, problems or worries to us for us to drag along all day. Blaise Pascal – 17th century philosopher and mathematician – said “we never keep to the present. We recall the past; we anticipate the future, as if we found it too slow in coming and were trying to hurry it up, or recall the past as if to stay its too rapid flight. We are so unwise that we wander about in times that do not belong to us, and do not think of the only one that does…” Instead of feeling the immaculate “new-ness” of this day, hearing the birds sing or noticing the play of colours around us, we are sucked backward into our thinking. For some of us, it’s “yesterday’s” stuff we drag around; for others, perhaps it’s “later today” or “next year”. We rush breakfast. Get the chores done. But

our beautiful mind gets “dragged along by its bottom” into some relentless anxiety, resisting the invitation to just Be Here. To Notice This. To feel your feet kissing the ground, your skin stroking the air and the pure honey-eyed wonder of being alive - at least for 30 seconds. After all, none of us are here forever. Sure, our mind has tasks to do, some of “the stuff” matters. But it is okay – and necessary – to pause now and then, and get untangled from that thought which is, after all, just a thought. This, in a picture, is the work of Heads Up Now – for young people, teachers, and leaders – to get unhooked from what holds them back, and be set free to run their own race. What was evident to Pascal 400 years ago resonates today. It is oh-too-easy to get tangled up in the past, or later on, and suddenly we are divorced from being at our best in the hereand-now. So in these words, may I just offer you permission: permission to pause. To give yourself a chance to get a little less tangled up. Take a breath. Find a way of working with whatever is going on. Get in touch if you think we can help, for life flows easier when we stop dragging yesterday around with us.

Christopher Spriggs is the founder of Heads Up Now, which offers coaching and support for young people, teachers and leaders to think, feel and perform at their best, more often and more easily. Want this? Get in touch with us today.

Gardening Beautiful Bulbs

by Pippa Greenwood fully waterproof container or saucer beneath each pot to protect your furniture.

Why not make your house all the more special this winter with some colourful bowls of bulbs, perhaps with some gorgeous perfume too? You can buy ready-planted bowls of bulbs later in the year, but act now for a stunning display at a fraction of the price. The best bulbs are those described as ‘prepared’, which means they will flower well, reliably and uniformly indoors. Although often pricier they are still great value, as results with standard bulbs may be unpredictable. I like to use prepared hyacinths, but I have bowls of non-prepared bulbs too. Visit your local garden centre now and you should see a good array of bulbs for sale, plus all the other things you need. Special bulb bowls are a good buy, and are available in many colours. They’re like huge soup bowls, but in plastic or china, and have no drainage holes. You can use normal flower pots, but put a

Bulb fibre or special compost formulated for indoor bulb planting performs better in containers without drainage, but is more expensive, and you can use standard multipurpose compost if you wish. Hyacinths for forcing are available in many shades, but use a single colour in any one container as there is often some variation in flowering times between the colours, and ideally you want all the flowers out simultaneously. Specially prepared crocus, paperwhite narcissus and some other daffodil types are also available. You can create a low-cost bowl with a large bag of inexpensive dwarf narcissus, such as ‘Tete-aTete’. Crocuses also work well. Fill your bowl about one third full of compost for larger bulbs to one half full for smaller bulbs. Firm the compost gently and position the bulbs pointed end uppermost. They can be quite closely packed, but not so they touch each other or the sides of the bowl. Nestle

the bulbs gently into the compost and then top up with compost so that just the noses are poking out. Water the compost lightly until moist but not waterlogged. Cover the bowls loosely with a black bin liner and put them in a cool, dark place so that the bulbs can form good root systems. Check the bowls every week or so and apply a little more water if necessary. Bring the bowls out into the daylight once the shoots are about 2-3cm tall, which usually takes 3-5 weeks. Put them in a cool spot with plenty of natural daylight, where the shoots will continue to grow and develop a healthy green colour; they will now need a little more water. Put your bulb bowl in a warmer room once the flower buds start to colour up. For a really smart look, cover the compost with some moss or tie a seasonal ribbon around the bowl. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening items: stylish cloches, tunnels, the fantastic SpeedHoe, plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! Or why not book Pippa for a gardening talk at your gardening club?

By James Baggott

The most rugged cars you can buy We’ve rounded up nine of the most hard-wearing and brawny cars you can buy today, ideal for surviving a nuclear war – or the muddy car boot sale in Sandford, Gloucestershire.

ToyoTa land cruiser The legendary Land Cruiser is the vehicle that pushed Land Rover out of Australia and showed the world that the Japanese could build offroaders that never broke down. Though the Land Cruiser isn’t as luxurious as a Range Rover, treat it properly and it’ll probably outlast you. There’s no compromise to be made offroad either.

Jeep Wrangler The latest Jeep Wrangler is more refined, luxurious and carlike than ever, but still retains the DNA of the original Willys Jeep – one of the most iconic off-roaders of all time. Solid axles ensure simplicity, allowing Wranglers to be modified for almost any purpose. For traversing sand dunes or mud-plugging in a deep forest, the Wrangler is about as tough as they come. Mercedes-Benz g-class Originally known as the GWagen, this military-spec beast has morphed into the ideal transport for those who want to be seen. With glitzy chrome atop the blocky body, and optional AMG-tuned engines, it’s often seen in London’s most glamorous districts. However, it’s also one of the most serious off-roaders you can buy, thanks to a supersophisticated 4WD system plus three locking differentials. When fitted with chunky tyres, the GClass is near unstoppable.

34 connectionmags.co.uk

isuzu d-Max aT35 arcTic Trucks Isuzu’s D-Max pickup is already a pretty rugged vehicle, with a beefy diesel engine and fourwheel drive. The specialists at Arctic Trucks, however, have given it enormous tyres and widened arches, giving the car a more purposeful stance, while custom Fox suspension lets it deal with terrain that would trouble a mountain goat.

ariel noMad Most off-roaders are designed to traverse rough terrain at about 5mph. The Ariel Nomad is designed to do it at 50. With an engine and body from the Atom road car, the rearwheel-drive Nomad bounces across the terrain rather than ploughing through it. It’s hardcore, open to the elements and great fun. suBaru ForesTer Subaru has a reputation for producing reliable, rugged cars, and the Forester is no exception. Loved by farmers, Subaru owners tend to keep their cars for longer than any other. The brand’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system is legendary for its simplicity and reliability, while boxer engines lower the centre of gravity and make for a reassuring drive.

ToyoTa prius The Toyota Prius is typically used as a taxi in London rather than for blasting through sand dunes. But that’s where the ruggedness lies. Nobody expected the Prius to be as reliable as it is – but even daily abuse as Uber cabs can’t break them. Many of these cars have done over 500,000 miles and still have their original battery packs.

/theconnectionmag

ToyoTa Hilux Our third Toyota is perhaps the most legendary – the Hilux, notably the ‘unkillable car’. On BBC’s Top Gear, a 1994 Hilux survived being left at sea, falling off a building, being crashed into a tree and crushed with a wrecking ball – and still started up afterwards. Today’s rather plusher Hilux still retains a well-earned reputation for serious reliability.

ell, what a summer that was. I can’t recall such a long, unbroken spell of dry, warm weather - all wonderfully conducive to a great season of cricket. I’ll round up the local scene shortly, but first I need to acknowledge a couple of English cricketers and their achievements. Alastair Cook retired from international cricket last week after a stellar career in which he accumulated 12,472 runs over 161 matches over 12 years. It wasn’t always pretty to watch, but as the statistics show it was always wonderfully productive. The key element to his success was his longevity; he played 159 of those 161 matches uninterrupted. Put into context, there is only one man playing cricket for England who has ever featured in a Test side that Cook was not a part of.

the seam bowler with the most career test wickets; fourth on the all time wicket taking list. Another player famed for his long career, Anderson has been involved for England for 16 years and at the age of 36, shows no sign of abating. Congratulations both, it’s been a pleasure to see you in action. Now to local matters. Amazingly – given the wealth of local sides – not one of our featured clubs were able to claim any silverware, but neither were any of them relegated, thankfully. Only Harvington achieved promotion, earning themselves 2nd place in the Fifth Division of the Worcestershire County League. That said, Temple Grafton, Alcester & Ragley and Bidford all left it until the last game of the season to ensure their safety in their respective divisions.

That man is Jimmy Anderson, who – in the same game that his great friend called it a day – took his 564th test wicket to become

BACK OF THE NET I read an article the day after Liverpool’s recent defeat of Paris Saint Germain, in which the Guardian’s Jonathan Wilson took apart the way PSG are run. Towards the end of the piece, the author says PSG are “certainly not a football club in any traditional sense.” While I appreciate this has to be read in context, it made me wonder how many clubs in this country, particularly those at the top, could be said to be run in the ‘traditional sense’. I suppose the answer has to consider from when our version of tradition is taken and in what context. I wonder also how ‘tradition’ will have been affected in a few years time following Brexit. But perhaps that’s getting in too deep... The Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool supporters out there must be salivating after their respective starts to the season. With Man United, Tottenham and Arsenal starting as also-

rans, grouped alongside the likes of Watford, Bournemouth and Wolves, the three at the top could soon have a big advantage. Mention of Wolves has to include praise for the way they have started the season. Yes, it’s still very early in the campaign, but they have made a positive start, with a couple of good wins and an impressive draw against Man City. Some leading figures in the game are speaking highly of the way Wolves are performing back in the top division. Exciting times if you’re a fan! Wolves are also the only Midlands club in the Premiership, so we have to look below to report on our other teams. In the Championship, West Brom have made a good start and are currently third, Villa just make the top six but could be higher if they had converted draws to wins, while Birmingham are struggling, without a win in their first seven games. In League 1, Coventry are mid table, a decent start after last season’s promotion. Cheltenham have had a couple of big losses and I know there are some Robins fans locally hoping for better results after appointing a new manager. Till next month...

Want to save for your children? What are the options? the money once it has been deposited. • This tax year (2018/19) the savings limit is £4,260 for each account. • There is no tax to pay on the interest or investment returns in a Junior ISA. Putting money aside for your children is a great way to offer them a little security as they get older. You do not need to save a huge amount – even a few pounds each week adds up to a nice little nest egg over time. You can teach younger children good money management skills by offering a little more pocket money as long as they save the extra amount. If they are old enough, get them involved in choosing a savings account and physically putting the money into it each month. Junior iSA There are two types of ISA for children – a Cash Junior ISA, and a Stocks and Shares Junior ISA. They are available if your child is under-18 and living in the UK. The money in a Junior ISA belongs to your child and is locked away until their 18th birthday, when the account upgrades to an adult ISA. Unlike other savings accounts aimed at children, you will not have access to

Friendly Society tAxexempt plAn A child tax-exempt savings plan offers a guaranteed minimum tax-free lump sum at the end of the term from a share-based investment fund. This type of account is designed for saving over a relatively long period of time – usually 10-25 years. • You can currently save £270 a year if you make ad hoc deposits, or £25 a month if it is on a regular basis. • Charges vary between Friendly Societies so it is worth shopping around. nS&i premium BondS Premium Bonds are an easy and very popular way to save money for a child. Instead of earning interest, each £1 bond you purchase has its own number that is entered into a prize draw each month and could win between £25 and £1 million. • You need to buy a minimum of £100 in Premium Bonds, with the maximum amount

Starting a child pension offers a little stability when they become an adult, and gives them a valuable head start in their retirement savings. • The government tops up each contribution you make into a pension by 25% (up to a total of £2,880 in 2018/19), which considerably increases its overall value over time. • You can still contribute more than £2,880, but it will not attract the government’s topup. However you decide to put money aside for your child, your attitude to risk may guide the decision as to whether to save or invest. You will also need to consider any fees and charges if you decide that investing is the preferable option. www.moneyadviceservice. org.uk/en/articles/childrenssavings-options www.gov.uk/junior-individualsavings-accounts www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/ national-savings-andinvestment-products#toc-2

Our vision is that: “In 2031 Alcester will be an attractive, thriving rural town with a valued historic character, located in a beautiful natural environment, offering a wide range of quality housing, good opportunities for business and local employment, a learning environment for all ages and excellent community and recreational facilities.” Look out for the summary document which will be delivered to residents and businesses containing draft policies on each of the five topics: Housing and Built Environment; Economy; Transport and Infrastructure; Community Leisure and Well-being, and the Natural Environment. The full draft ANDP is available on the Town Council website (www.alcester-tc.gov.uk) or in hard copy at the Town Council Office, and the Library. Please send your comments, with your name

‘We Will Remember Them’ – but not all were!

ncil

m,

In 2014 Bob Marshall published a book on the Bidford soldiers killed in the Great War and named on the village War Memorial. But what of those who fought and survived? In the course of researching their stories, Bob discovered a further five men who were killed. It is therefore fitting that, one hundred years after the end of World War I, their sacrifice is finally recognised by the village they called home. Bidford Parish Council, with help from Bidford & District History Society, has had a new plaque made for the War Memorial, complete with the five extra names, to be unveiled on

Saturday 6th October, appropriately at 11.00am. All are welcome as, a century after their deaths, we pay tribute in a short ceremony to five Bidford soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Mark Shaddick, Bidford & District History Society

Tarantara: A Local Choir Unlike Any Other

T

arantara is a mixed choir that draws its members from around the Alcester area. They have been singing, to great acclaim and for countless charitable events, for over 15 years. Led by professional musical director Jonathan Hill, Tarantara concerts are renowned for their high entertainment value. The repertoire is always diverse with everything from musical theatre and pop hits from the past, to classic choral pieces and adventurous contemporary works (by the likes of Morton Lauridsen, Eric Whitacre etc). Profits from concerts go to the organiser’s chosen charity, and on average raises in excess of £20K per year. Accompanist Chris Long – ex music leader at Stratford College - has played for Tarantara

since 2005. He says: “a Tarantara concert has something for everybody; an inspired music selection and Jonathan, with his banter and raconteuring, makes a very entertaining companion for an evening of singing. Anyone who thought that a choir concert was a stuffy affair needs to hear Tarantara!” The choir will be performing in Redditch, Stratford, Alcester, Bishops Tachbrook and Droitwich this autumn. Concert details, plus information about how to book the choir for your own fundraising event, can be found online at www.tarantara.org.uk
