Alcester Slimming Leader Collects Award

S

limming World Consultant Jo Chambers has proved she’s golden after winning a Gold Promotion Award for her work in helping to tackle obesity in the area.

Jo, who runs the Alcester Slimming World group at the Jubilee Centre, was delighted to receive the award for inspiring dozens of people in the local community to start losing weight and to improve their health. The accolade sees Jo, who lost 5st with Slimming World herself, become a Golden Promotion Consultant. The award was created in 2019 to celebrate Slimming World’s 50th year and is given to all Consultants in the UK and Ireland who welcome 50 new members to their group in one month. This year is Slimming World’s 50th Golden anniversary. Jo says: “More than two-thirds of the adult population are overweight and that includes Alcester. In fact, in Alcester 40% of adults are so severely overweight that they’re putting their health at risk and sadly 30% of children are struggling with their weight too. “Lots of people want to lose weight but they often don’t know how or where to turn for help. When members come to my group they tell me that they’ve tried losing weight before and it hasn’t worked so they feel like failures. I reassure them that it isn’t them who failed but the programme they followed, usually because the diet was too strict or because they didn’t get the right support. This leaves people thinking that they can’t do it – that they’ll never succeed with any diet – but members in our Alcester group have lost 210st since January 2019 and I know these 50 new members will be equally successful too.” Slimming World members follow the club’s Food Optimising eating plan, which encourages slimmers to make small, easy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat so they make healthier choices and lose weight without ever going hungry or feeling deprived. Each week, as well as weighing in to log their progress, members are motivated for the week ahead by sharing recipes, advice and ideas for coping with challenges. Jo says: “I know the thought of joining a group can be daunting, especially when you don’t feel

very confident, but everyone’s welcome and we have a lot of fun.” She adds: “I’m delighted to have achieved this award and that’s what I’m most proud of because I’m taking this award as recognition of how hard I work to support every single one of my members to achieve their weight loss goals. I truly believe I have the best, most rewarding job in the world – there’s no better feeling than helping someone to feel good about themselves – so winning this award really is worth your weight in gold!” If you’d like to sparkle and shine like Gold Promotion Consultant Jo and her Slimming World members, visit the Alcester group, which meets every Thursday at 9.30am, 5pm & 7pm at the Jubilee Centre. Or to find out more visit www.slimmingworld.com or call Jo on 07908 791137.

Welcome

... to the December/January Connection

This time last year, we were getting ready to publish our first bi-monthly edition. I can’t get over how quickly the past 12 months have gone, but we’re very grateful to have had continued support and custom from a wide range of local businesses and community groups. We’re delighted to feature a great many community events again in this edition (p.56-59). There’s Christmas concerts and carol services, Bidford Tree Festival, and the Bidford Pantomime (p.38) even before you stop to read about the regular community group meetings across our local areas. Early December also means Alcester will be readying itself for St Nick’s Night, and you can read more about this wonderful event on page 45. A particularly special mention goes to the organisers of Alcester Community Christmas Dinner, who are once again bringing Christmas cheer for anyone that doesn’t want to spend the day alone (p.33). As always, I’m thinking with my belly and looking forward to some lovely Christmas food, with many local establishments and stores in the area offering delectable festive fayre, as well as preparing myself to try out our own baking recipe on page 10. In recent years, Christmas gifting has extended beyond the day itself and, in an effort to spread the joy so that children aren’t overwhelmed with all of their gifts on the 25th, there’s an increasing trend for creating ‘Christmas Eve boxes’ and we’ve got some lovely suggestions for what you could fill them with on pages 26 & 28. Or perhaps you’d like to send a cutting of the ideas to Father Christmas in case your little people fancy waking up to one (or all!) of them in their stockings on Christmas morning. We’re very lucky to have had the chance to speak with one of the country’s youngest solo glider pilots recently. 14 year old Ollie recently achieved his license with “flying” colours! Find out more about his accolade on page 16. A couple of months ago, I noticed an article on a news website about something called “what3words”. Have you heard of this? It’s a new way of specifying your exact location and I find it fascinating. If you’d like to read about it, and perhaps see what your own 3 words are for where you live, turn to page 54 to find out how. Finally, although I’ve barely touched on all of the brilliant articles we’ve got covered in here, don’t forget to enter our competition (p.55) this month. If you win, you could keep the Amazon Echo Show for yourself or generously gift it to a loved one. Closing date for entries is 18th December, so get in touch now! So, here ends my last welcome message of 2019 and we’d like to wish all of our readers, customers and deliverers a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Until 2020...

Cranberry, Orange & Nut Loaf This simple cake makes a delicious alternative to a classic rich fruit Christmas cake. It will keep un-iced in an airtight container for a few days. Add the icing and fresh cranberry topping on the day of serving.

175g unsalted butter, softened 175g golden caster sugar 225g self-raising flour 2 tsp ground mixed spice ½ tsp baking powder 3 large eggs 75g sweetened dried cranberries 50g walnuts, chopped 50g hazelnuts, chopped Zest of 1 orange 1 tbsp orange juice

Place the butter, sugar, flour, spice, baking powder and eggs in a large bowl and beat with an electric whisk for 2-3 minutes until thoroughly combined. Fold in the dried cranberries, nuts and orange zest and juice.

TIP

frostinG Half of a 400g tub ready-made royal icing 2 tsp snowflake sugar sprinkles 75g fresh cranberries Fresh mint sprigs, to decorate (optional)

Spoon the mixture into the tin and level the surface. Bake for 1hr-1 hr 15 minutes or until risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Spread the royal icing over the top of the cake. Instead of the fresh cranberries you could scatter over more festive-themed sugar sprinkles and add a dusting of edible gold spray for a really sparkly finish.

#GetTheHeadsUp

A

t the autumn equinox, I awoke on Dartmoor in a pop-up tent. I lay half-in, half-out, peeking through mist to watch the sunrise. Dartmoor was a barren environment to spend the day running, studded with rocky Tors and hawthorns in neglect, but a suitable place to think about solitude. Solitude is being erased from our lives. It’s harder to get away from screens and machines. A recent study said half of us sleep with phones in our beds, like digital teddy bears. For those of us caught in the machinery of work, we are pulled and pushed in a chaotic swell of one another’s needs, wants, loyalties and moods. Frankly, we wear one another out. Boundaries get crossed. We sacrifice thinking for ourselves. The negative impact of this on mental health (well-being, quality of attention, independent thinking, performance...) is obvious. To give (or take) constantly is not sustainable for you or others around you. Natural introverts (about 30% of us) will require more, but the benefits of solitude - improved creativity, concentration and connection with life multiply for everyone. We all need mental oxygen. As I ran, bending beneath boughs of beech and birch, ankles snagging on gorse, I considered the paradox: how solitude involves both subtraction and addition. We must occasionally subtract ourselves physically - from crowds, turning off screens, unplugging from other’s inputs. This is a good place to start but a poor place to finish. Left to one’s own company for too long can breed aloofness and unhealthy rumination. But subtraction - physical, mental, social - gives us breathing space to see ourselves more realistically. ‘Solstice’ derives from Latin, meaning ‘the sun comes to a stop’. We each need moments of human solstice, Self-Stopping, to get our bearings about where we are, how we are, what’s going on within us and within the systems (family, groups, organisations) to which we belong.

But solitude is more about presence than absence, an active not passive process, intentional not accidental. It is an act of self-centring. It adds something. This is not selfish, any more than it would be selfish to quench your own thirst or clean your own teeth. Solitude is mental hygiene. Solitude is not an event (‘I spent a day on my own’) but a process of regathering. Ask yourself: What in nature helps me feel replenished? Coasts, woods, having a journal, photography, entering wide open spaces - all these let the light in. Decide what works for you and do it. Running through bracken on Dartmoor, I came upon my first ever Fly Agaric mushroom - you know, the red-capped fungus with white spots, like something from The Smurfs. The thing about Fly Agaric is it has a mycorrhizal relationship with birch trees; each brings something unique to the other, a symbiotic partnership only nature could devise. Ultimately, I think solitude and community are like this. The purpose of solitude is not to separate but to reconnect us with what matters. Nobody else can do this work for you. You have to face up to You. But it is not about self-gratification (as if you’re the only thing that matters) but self-gravity, so you can return replenished to the people and work you care about, bringing sharpened attention to the environments in which you live, love, work and learn. As Christmas approaches, be sure of this: The world craves your presence. It wants you fully Here, not half-in, half-out. Solitude can expand your capacity to self-renew, to take a mental breather and start again, ready to make an energetic contribution, and like the Dartmoor sun, appear through the mist and declare: Here I am!

It’s well worth following their Facebook page for updates on the events planned including a regular Sunday quiz night, live music, and beer festivals to name a few. The next live music event is on the evening of Saturday 30th November, closely following by a Christmas Pamper Night in the function room on Saturday 7th December from 7pm. You can contact The Coach & Horses on 01386 870249 and follow them on Facebook for more updates.

tidying up larger branches on trees and shrubs and is perfect for fruit trees. Use a sawing action for best results and make the pruning cut a few millimetres or so away from the main stem from which the branch you are removing is joined. A cut like this will heal quicker and is less prone to fungal rotting.

Pruning Perfection Winter is perfect for pruning and cutting back woody plants (except if it is really icy or frosty), so get stuck in now that deciduous trees, shrubs, hedges and climbers are bare of leaves. Remember that for pruning to really benefit the plant, you need the right tools. For a small expanse of hedge or a shrub that needs reshaping, a good, sharp pair of well-oiled shears should do the job. When cutting along a hedge top, a guide line – such as a taut string – will help you get a neat, level surface. For larger hedges a powered hedge cutter or hedge trimmer is preferable. Use ‘loppers’ for removal of stems at various heights and of varying thicknesses. These are available with various handle lengths (some have telescopic handles), so that you can reach higher. For relatively thick stems they are better than shears or

secateurs and allow for accurate cutting. Wear goggles and ideally protective headgear if you have to cut back branches above your head.

Create sloping cuts whenever you can so that rain and moisture runs off Everybody needs a pair of good-quality sharp secateurs for pruning smaller woody stems. Always cut to an outward-facing bud (so that the new growth produced from that bud grows outwards). Secateurs are good for removing dead and dying stems, for formative pruning (to ensure the plant grows in the right direction), and for pruning to encourage flowering. A proper pruning saw is necessary for pruning out or

More pruninG tips Always check the best pruning time for your plants – most hedges and many shrubs can be cut back now, but you may impact the flowering potential of others. Some trees, mainly those in the Prunus family – such as edible and ornamental cherries, plums, apricots, damsons, peaches and nectarines – are prone to the potentially fatal fungal ‘silver leaf’ infection, and should be pruned in the summer months. Pruning tools must be really sharp – blunt tools mean more effort and the risk of damage to the plant. Create sloping cuts with secateurs, loppers and saws to prevent moisture accumulating (wetness encourages wood rotting), and cut close to but not on top of a bud to allow new growth without dieback. Stand back from time to time when pruning, to let you see how you are affecting the overall shape of the plant. By Pippa Greenwood

Getting to know ‘Joe the Mow’...

I

’m Joe and I own/ run ‘Joe The Mow’, a local lawnmowing and hedge cutting business based in Broom and serving the local villages around the Warwickshire/ Worcestershire borders. I work from as far afield as Wilmcote for a wellknown public attraction, to Cookhill, Cleeve Prior, Welford on Avon and many other villages in the surrounding areas. I set up my business in 2007 , after leaving my previous job of 10 years in the operating theatres of Warwick Hospital with little more than a lawnmower which had belonged to my grandmother, a strimmer and a small van. The mower and strimmer pretty much took up all the available space in the van! In the years that have followed, the business has been slowly expanded and the equipment/machines improved or replaced by professional grade equipment. The business is mainly focused on lawn mowing and hedgecutting, but I also undertake autumn leaf clearing, grass cutting of fields, churchyards, orchards or anywhere where there is grassland that needs to be maintained. In the winter I undertake firewood

processing/extraction for a living history site, who rely on the wood for all their heating/cooking and historically correct re-enacting . Occasionally, I produce chainsaw carvings and have undertaken commissioned carving work for a small number of customers. Admittedly, this is actually a pastime for me, which I’ve been doing for the last 14 years, but has gotten a little out of hand after receiving requests from friends and relatives, subsequently growing from there. I got into carving through a mixture of ‘just give it a go’ and realising that a career in tree surgery wasn’t for me. But I still wanted to do something requiring skill and precision without the much-needed head for heights and knowledge of knots and ropework. I’ve carved mushrooms, the odd bear, tower shells, an Easter Island head, an aardvark and possibly one of the more challenging pieces was ‘drawing into’ a piece of oak a Buddhist Ganesh idol for my inlaws. The wood used for the carvings is locally sourced from the Ragley saw mill, from ‘cut offs’ from previous carvings or the odd tree that has been felled/removed from a customer’s property. If you’d like more information about my carving work, or to enquire about my other services, please give me a call on 07967 506920.

Barton, a small but mighty y hamlet!

W

hat started as a “pub conversation” some 12 years ago, has now developed into a well-oiled charity fundraising machine. Despite having a population of just 80 or so, in 2019 Barton residents have hit the milestone of donating over £50,000 to local charities via an eclectic mix of events. Over the years, volunteers have organised the traditional village fete in different Barton locations, from the Cottage of Content to five “Riverside Revelries” by the Avon at Dovecote Moorings and Pilgrim Lock. Other challenging events included the Queens Jubilee and 90th birthday celebrations, an Armed Forces Day and a Christmas Market! Add in Barn Dances, local walks, Car Treasure Hunts, a Darts Night, Race Nights, picnics, Fantasy League football, Murder Mystery - there has been something for everyone.

Many stories to be told – weather related, street collection confrontations, fly-pasts, Chas & Dave, dressing up – and of course, at times, injuries and exhaustion. But it’s not just about fund-raising. It is also about bringing the community together to have fun, for the organising committee, the local community and the wider community. The Barton Village Fund committee members take care to ensure that distribution of the charitable funds raised is done democratically, predominantly giving to local charities and chosen after a ballot or careful deliberation. Recipients include Acorns Childrens’ Hospice, Warwickshire Air Ambulance, Shakespeare Hospice, MacMillan, Stratford and Warwick Cancer Wards, and many more. Please help Barton continue their charitable work. Follow our Facebook page for updates.

While it tends to mean the engine isn’t being used at times when it’s not being particularly inefficient anyway, the economy gains are fairly small. However, as it’s the batteries that tend to add cost to hybrids, mild hybrids tend to be less expensive to buy than other models.

Everything you need to know about hybrids Looking to move into the world of electrification? Here’s all you need to know about hybrids. With all the talk of electrification of cars and everyone looking to reduce their carbon footprint, hybrid models have become more and more popular with buyers. If you’re interested but are not sure what they are and what different types are available, we’ve got you covered. What is a hybrid? As the name suggests, it’s a hybrid of an electric vehicle and an internal combustion engine (usually powered by petrol or diesel). It will have a batterypowered electric motor that will work in conjunction with the combustion engine to power the wheels. Generally, the idea is that the electric motor takes care of the driving at low speeds or while accelerating, because that’s when a combustion engine is at

34 connectionmags.co.uk

its most inefficient. Then, once up to speed, when the engine can run at low effort to keep things ticking along, it takes over. The result is better fuel economy – always a good thing! types of hybrid Mild hybrid (MHEV) The mild hybrid takes the hybrid principles but utilises them in the mildest of ways. They typically have a small battery and an electric motor that can take over running the car’s ancillaries, such as the headlights and air conditioning. This means the engine can be turned off to save fuel at times when it is not needed, such as when decelerating or when stopped. The important distinction is that the wheels cannot be powered by the electric motor.

/theconnectionmag

Hybrid When you hear a car referred to as simply a ‘hybrid’ alone, it tends to mean that it has the capability to run on pure electric but the batteries can only be recharged through regenerative braking. This is when motors in the wheels ‘harvest’ energy that would normally be lost when decelerating and braking and uses it to replenish the battery charge. This is where the term ‘self-charging hybrid’ comes from – you never charge the vehicle from an external source, it recharges itself through regeneration. On the positive side, hybrids are much more economical than a mild hybrid, because you can drive on electric only, providing there’s enough charge, and they tend to be less expensive than plug-in models. However, because they rely on deceleration to charge, if you do a lot of motorway miles at a consistent speed you could find the battery is dead once you get to a town where you could use EV mode. Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Plug-in hybrids are the ultimate form of hybrid models, because they can plug into an external source Continued on page 28

of electricity to charge the batteries. This means you can top the batteries up to full charge overnight and thus maximise the electric-only range. If your daily commute is quite short you might rarely need petrol power, saving you lots of money in the long run. The downside is that the charging technology tends to make PHEVs pricier than other hybrids, and if you have no means to charge the battery yourself, you might as well save that initial cash and go for a normal hybrid. frequently asked questions What is a self-charging hybrid? In truth, there’s very little to separate a ‘self-charging’ hybrid from a regular hybrid. They still use a single or pair of electric motors to assist the petrol (or, in small numbers, diesel) engine, and they can’t be plugged in to top up the batteries, either. So how do you charge them? Most hybrids come with the option to use some of the engine’s power output to charge the batteries, therefore reserving some electric power for later use. In addition,

nearly all hybrids harness the energy generated when braking and coasting, pushing this kinetic energy into the batteries. So really, a ‘selfcharging’ hybrid is just a hybrid car that can’t be plugged into the mains. Would a hybrid benefit me? This really depends on your daily journeys. Those who do shorter trips day-to-day are definitely candidates for the swap to a hybrid, as the vehicle can run on all-electric power alone, meaning that emissions are practically zero and overall consumption of fuel will be as low as possible. In contrast, if you’re travelling further afield more regularly while at higher speeds, then a conventionally powered car may still be better. Hybrids struggle to run on electric power at motorway speeds and for long distances, after which the smaller combustion engine is left to deal with propulsion all by itself, resulting in higher emissions and poor fuel economy. are hybrid cars reliable? Despite a complex powertrain and the multitude of new technologies incorporated

36 connectionmags.co.uk

/theconnectionmag

into a hybrid’s setup, they are as reliable as a conventional car. In fact, many older hybrids have achieved high mileages with little to no fuss, and because of the stronger regeneration you get from a hybrid there’s less stress on the brakes too. do you get a plug-in grant? Sadly, no – in March 2019 the government announced that it was axing the plug-in grant for hybrid vehicles following a surge in their popularity. Only all-electric vehicles now qualify for the grant. are they eligible for exclusion from low emissions zones? Some hybrids are eligible for an exclusion from London’s low-emissions zone charge, but the rules are far more stringent than previously. Now, only hybrid cars which emit less than 75g/km CO2 and have a minimum zero-emissions (or all-electric) range of 20 miles will be completely exempt from the charge. As a result, older vehicles may not get the discount. Plus, in 2021, London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone is set to extend to the north and south circular, and no hybrids will get an exemption from the charge.

BACK OF THE NET Well now, the Championship’s looking tasty, isn’t it. West Brom top at this moment and playing well. If they hadn’t slipped up, drawing two successive home games, both games they should have won, they would be well ahead by now. There’s a tough month ahead which could shake up the league for an interesting start to the new year but I can see them being favourites for champions at this stage. Blues are mid table and conceding too may goals and although only a few points off the top six, I can’t see them doing better than half way this season. Coventry are having a decent season after promotion, just hanging on to a top 6 place. It should take a little while longer to be in a position to really challenge for promotion

but at least they are now going in the right direction. I know we are only a third of the way through the season but it’s getting more difficult every week to see how Liverpool can not win the Premiership this season. Only Man Utd have taken points off them so far and despite conceding more possession and shots to Man City, they still turned out worthy winners. As well as Leicester and Chelsea have been playing, I can’t see either of them catching Liverpool at this stage and, if I had to predict champions now, they are the obvious choice. But ‘it’s a funny old game!’ VAR. It has to be mentioned, like Brexit on all news items. Enough has already been said by many, except for those in charge. It surely was never meant to delay games by over three minutes at a time while someone watching telly decides whether a striker’s armpit was closer to the goal than a defender’s toe nail. Enough! It’s coming up to Christmas time so I wish you all season’s greetings, for you and your teams. Till next time...

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ALCESTER A Very Happy, Peaceful and Safe Christmas and New Year 2020 from NHW. As the Christmas period approaches we would ask you to be extra vigilant. Crime statistics show that Burglary and Theft increase during the darker nights and the festive season. • Have lights on timers to make your house appear occupied when darkness falls. • In the evening, close the curtains so that your belongings are not on view, especially if you live near playing fields, open ground or alleyways. • When walking or cycling after dark, wear something reflective. • Don’t leave anything in your car if it is parked on your drive or in the road. • When shopping, especially in the larger towns and cities, please be aware of pickpockets, keep your purse or wallet secure. • Do not leave your shopping on view in the car. • If you leave your house empty over Christmas please tell your neighbour, ask them to make sure any deliveries are not left on the doorstep. • Do not leave Christmas presents on view

through windows to passers-by, e.g. around the Christmas tree. • SNAP - As part of Operation Snap, members of the public can report and submit (via a secure online Link - https:// www.nextbase.com/en-gb/national-dashcam-safety-portal/ ) digital footage showing potential traffic offences. This can range from driving dangerously or carelessly, to overtaking on solid white lines, using a mobile phone while driving, ignoring traffic lights or dangerous driving around other road users, such as horse riders and cyclists. Your submission will be sent to Warwickshire Police where the evidence will be reviewed by one of our road traffic police officers. Due to the large volume of submissions received each week, we are unable to update each submitter regarding the outcome of their allegation. However, all submissions are dealt with proactively to help reduce risk taking and poor driving on our counties roads. Any footage submitted through the portal can be used by us to help educate other road users and to advise on case results. Crime prevention tips for using a Cashpoint/ATM Alcester Police give the following tips: Before arriving at the ATM. Minimise your time at the machine by having your bank card ready in hand and know how much you wish to withdraw. Try to use ATMs that are located in busy public places and places that are well lit after dark. At the ATM, don’t use it if it appears visually different from the norm, especially around the card slot. Has anything been added on to the surface? (Tell the bank about your suspicions immediately). Try to block the view of the keypad from others both behind and to the side. Is anyone hanging around or somebody sitting in a car near to the ATM? If concerned about the people near you, walk away and return later or use a different machine. Using the ATM, be totally focused on the matter in hand. Do not be distracted by incidents around you - people talking to you or offering to

assist you, you no matter how friendly they appear to be. When inputting your PIN cover the keypad with your other hand to stop your PIN being seen by people. After withdrawing cash, don’t stand there counting it. Place cash in bag/pocket and walk away immediately. Report any suspicious behaviour on 101. After using the ATM, as you walk away from the ATM continue to be aware of the people around you. Avoid backstreets or alleys. If you think you are being followed walk into the bank, a shop, or some other busy place. When getting into your car lock the doors. Don’t put your handbags/wallets on the passenger seat.

The next meeting of NHW Alcester will be held on Tuesday 11 February 2020 in St Nicholas Church House, Butter Street at 7.30pm. Contact details: nhwalcester@ gmail.com or telephone Dorrie Manders on 01789 762999. Everyone is welcome.

Alcester’s

St Nicholas Night

I

n the pre-Christmas bedlam, people in Alcester have the opportunity to catch their breath and enjoy themselves the old-fashioned way. St Nicholas Night is their chance to celebrate the town, the season itself and do a bit of good along the way. December 6 is the day of St Nicholas, the fourth century bishop and the original Santa Claus. As the patron saint of gift-giving why not follow his example and give rather than receive? Local voluntary organisations and charities will line the High Street with food and gifts for sale to raise funds for their cause. There’s the ever popular and spectacular procession including morris dancers, the Court Leet and a parade of classic cars. Also, there’s the Boy Bishop and attendants who hold a churchyard service and switch on the festive lights. And, yes, Father Christmas will be there. “It’s a wonderful evening. This is when the town comes together. Everything is purely voluntary. All we ask is that stallholders make a donation

to cover costs,” said Tom Keeling, one of the organisers. Youngsters from local schools provide an hour of music on the church green followed by their elders in the Alcester Victoria Silver Band. And to finish there’s the colour and noise of a firework display; and then the meditative calm of a service of compline at (where else?) St Nicholas church. Last year it’s estimated around 6,000 people came along to enjoy Alcester’s warm welcome on a cold evening. Why not make it yourself? Read more on www.stnicholasnight.org.

Camargue Provence on the Wild Side As the river Rhône approaches the Mediterranean, it splits into the Grand Rhône and the Petit Rhône to form one of the largest deltas in Europe. This is the ‘Camargue’, an enticing place unlike anywhere else in France, where marshlands and lagoons glisten in the sun, fringed by broad windswept sands to the south while paddies, orchards and wheat spread on the fertile plain. But the deeper you head into the delta, the wilder the land strung with lakes and dunes, deserted beaches, sand bars, meadows and ponds festooned in tamarisks and yellow irises – and at the heart of it all, the saltwater lagoon of Vaccarès, which looks almost like a sea. Orchids and forget-me-nots splash colour here and there and along the coast delicate sand lilies, golden

46 connectionmags.co.uk

immortelles and sea lavender flutter in the breeze. With just ten inhabitants per square kilometre, these vast open spaces almost feel like the end of the earth, and although there are a few roads around the more isolated areas are easier to reach on horseback, as the locals do. There are guesthouses and stables where anyone can learn to ride or join a guided trek to enjoy a landscape with no boundaries. Scenery aside, the Camargue has a character all of its own, steeped in age-old culture and traditions. There may be few humans about but you’re sure to come across a paddock where white Camargue horses gallop semi-wild, manes flying in the wind, or you might find a whitewashed traditional cottage thatched with reeds and shaped like a prow to withstand storms, a saltpan, a stretch of barren

/theconnectionmag

land or a ranch called ‘manade’ where black bulls are bred for the game of ‘cocarde’. The protected wetlands and coast attract around 350 bird species, from raptors and waterfowls to song and sea birds. Magpies and jackdaws are common but it’s always a treat to spot a colourful bee-eater, a crested hoopoe or a roller pirouetting in the air on a spectacular courtship dance. Yet, above all others, pink flamingos are the icon of the Camargue, wading in shallow lagoons, amazingly peaceful until something disturbs the peace and the whole colony takes flight, shrieking through a magnificent cloud of flaming colours. In the spring, thousands of chicks are born in the Regional Park, all fluffy and white, for it will take several years for them to turn pink. Some will stay in the Camargue throughout the winter; others take off across the sea in search of warmer climes. But when you reach the coast don’t expect glittering resorts, for this is still the wild ‘cowboy land’. Just look out for the lonely walled village of AiguesMortes, once a sea port, now inland, and LesSaintes-Maries de la Mer, 8,000 residents and capital of the Camargue where gypsies from far and wide honour their patron saint on an annual pilgrimage. As visitors like to say, wherever you come from, ‘there is no place like the Camargue’. Solange Hando

Alcester Town Council DECEMBER 2019 - JANUARY 2020

What you may not know if you are a Riparian Owner Do you own land which is adjacent to a watercourse or has a watercourse running through it? If so, you are a riparian owner. The law pertaining to riparian land is complex and not well understood but in simple terms it states that riparian owners have certain rights and responsibilities. The rights include: to receive a flow of water in its natural state, both in terms of quality and quantity; the right to access that water for ordinary purposes such as domestic water or for livestock; and also the right to protect your land from erosion and flooding. The responsibilities that go along with these rights are serious and there are penalties for failing in your duties as a riparian owner. You must maintain the watercourse and clear any obstructions so that normal flow is not affected. You must maintain the banks and bed of the watercourse, including any plants and flood defences and other structures such as culverts. Additionally, you may not pollute the watercourse. The proper management of watercourses is vital to reducing local flood risk and for this reason, if you fail in your duties as a riparian owner and are found to have contributed, through action or inaction, to flooding then you may face legal action. Please also note that permits are required to undertake any works on the watercourse or adjacent to it that extend beyond general maintenance in fulfilling of your responsibilities. Additional information is available from the UK Gov website: www.gov.uk/guidance/owning-a-watercourse Cllr. K. Soares

Right On The Mark: what3words Chris Sheldrick used to work in the music industry, organising live events around the world. He quickly discovered that in the music world, people struggle with poor addressing every day. Getting lost trying to find events was pretty common. He had some pretty bad days; in Italy, a driver unloaded all the equipment an hour north of Rome, instead of an hour south of Rome. And a slightly worse day, when a keyboard player called him and said, ‘Chris, don’t panic, but we may have just sound-checked at the wrong wedding’. After experiencing several similarly frustrating situations, he realised that addressing around the world just wasn’t good enough. To get people and

54 connectionmags.co.uk

equipment to the right places – and on time – he tried sharing GPS coordinates instead. But asking people to meet at the likes of 40.7127753, -74.0059728 was just too unreliable. Entering 16 numbers into a device, or even sharing them over a phone call, can easily go wrong. It was a problem begging for a solution and one that Chris and three colleagues, including a clever mathematician, developed an innovative service around. Chris Sheldrick is now the CEO of the company what3words which was launched in 2013. What3words has taken the globe and divided it into a grid of 3m x 3m squares, giving each one a unique 3 word address. For example, the front door to what3words’ London office can be found at ///filled.count. soap. Today millions of people across the world are using 3 word addresses to find, share and describe places faster and more easily – from festival-goers and travellers to delivery drivers, event organisers and rescue services.

Another unique feature using this method is its suitability for voice, both when speaking to someone and as input to an app or enabled satnav device. Saying GPS points, road names and postcodes is just not distinctive, but the what3words clever algorithm ensures each word has a unique sound meaning it’s easily heard, even if you do find yourself caught up the side of a mountain in a howling gale. what3words is available to download free of charge from Google Play and the Apple store, and over 1000 businesses, government agencies and NGOs across 170 countries are now using 3 word addresses. Of course the real fun is finding a three metre square at your own home and selecting which one you like the sound of and is easy to remember. I’d tell you what I chose but… www.what3words.com Tania Houston

safety with Gadget Chargers If you’re buying a replacement charger for your gadgets, or want to replace a number of chargers with a single multi-charger, be careful. A recent Which? study found that many noname chargers sold on sites such as Amazon (via third party sellers), Wish and eBay were dangerous. More than one-quarter of unbranded USB chargers were fire risks, many USB travel adapters could deliver serious electric shocks and over half of the unbranded power banks had electrical faults that could lead to fires. In many cases the unbranded chargers look like genuine products from the likes of Apple, Amazon or Anker. To avoid the fakes, always look for brands you recognise, don’t buy from third-party sellers and don’t buy from outside Europe. You’ll probably pay a little more but the savings just aren’t worth the risk.
