Welcome

... to the October-November Connection

Gosh, hasn’t the autumn crept in quickly? The morning walk to school is getting quite chilly and it’s definitely time for woolly jumpers and boots. Soon we’ll be getting those scarves and hats out of the closets for the approaching winter. But, before then, let’s enjoy all that this season has to offer us. As usual, I’m thinking with my stomach and eagerly anticipating hearty stews and crumbles. In a bid to eat less meat, I shall certainly be trying this edition’s recipe – leek, aubergine and tomato gratins (p.10). I’ll also be looking forward to another fantastic food festival in Alcester (p.16) come October as well as the Rotary Big Breakfast (p.57) – such a great morning where you can meet with friends and family for a delicious cooked breakfast in the heart of Bidford or Alcester. Or both! As our regular readers know, we have a lot of love for our local communities, so we’re delighted to tell you more about our very first ‘Community Star’ (p.48) and to give you another opportunity to honour members of your community for all they’ve contributed recently and/or over the years. As well as our usual ‘Community/What’s On’ pages (p.56-59), you can also catch up on some news from around the community (p.2627), which includes details of our favourite opthalmologist’s cycle ride from London to Paris at the end of September. Don’t forget to sponsor him! Continuing the sporting theme, ‘View From The Boundary’ (p.38) closes for the year with a round up of teams both locally and at national level, whilst ‘Back Of The Net’ (p.38) brings you thoughts on the early football season so far. As November arrives, make sure you have the Bidford Bonfire event jotted onto your calendar (details on page 22). If last year’s fantastic firework display was anything to go by, this one isn’t to be missed. And finally, if you struggle to bring colour to your garden over the colder seasons, turn to our gardening article (p.20) for a step-bystep guide to planting your very own beautiful hanging baskets. It doesn’t sound as daunting as you’d think, and I’m sure Barry at Ridgeway Nurseries in Cookhill could give you some pointers too. Just tell him we sent you! So, until next time (and wishing you a fantastic autumn!),

New Alcester Hair Academy Seeks Models & Apprentices

T

he Garage Hair Academy opened at the end of April and is now taking bookings for hair appointment. The school operates on Mondays between the hours of 3pm to 7pm and is the brain child of Sarah Charlton, who owns and runs Mavericks Hair Salon in Alcester. Sarah has always been passionate about training, and has trained hairdressers all over the world. She now wants to pass those skills onto the next generation of hairdressers. On Mondays she is working with hairdressing apprentices, and teaching all aspects of hairdressing, and for this they need models. There is a very small amount charged for these services with the trainees, mainly to cover costs. The appointments may take a little longer but the students are closely supervised at all times. Please note that skin tests are required 48 hours prior to any colouring services.

Leek, aubergine and tomato gratins Simpler to make than a vegetarian lasagne, but just as tasty. Serve with crusty bread and green salad for a family supper.

Ready in: 55 minutes | Serves 4

Ingredients 1 large aubergine, trimmed and thinly sliced 3 tbsp olive oil 1 large leek, trimmed and halved widthways then cut into strips 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 600g bottle passata (sieved tomatoes) 2 tbsp tomato puree 2 tsp dried oregano Pinch of sugar Salt and freshly ground black pepper 200g ricotta cheese

TIP

150g mozzarella cheese, sliced

10

Preheat the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas mark 7. Brush the aubergine slices with 2 tbsp of the oil. Heat a large cast-iron griddle pan and cook the slices (in batches) for 1-2 minutes on each side until lightly charred and just tender. Set aside. Blanch the leeks in a large pan of lightly salted water for 1 minute then refresh under cold water. Drain well and pat dry with kitchen paper. Heat the rest of the oil in a frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the onion and fry for 5 minutes then add the garlic and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Add the passata, tomato puree, oregano and sugar and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until reduced and thickened, stirring frequently. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Spread some of the sauce in the base of four shallow individual gratin dishes. Cover with half the aubergine and leek then spread more tomato sauce on top. Crumble over the ricotta cheese. Cover with the rest of the aubergine and remaining sauce. Top with the mozzarella and the remaining leeks. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until golden and bubbling.

Top with a sprinkling of grated Parmesan (or vegetarian Italian-style hard cheese) mixed with brown breadcrumbs before baking to give a lovely golden crispy crust to the finished dishes.

#GetTheHeadsUp

L

et’s talk about the gift of confusion. Gift? Yes. Coming through confusion has much to do with mental health. I don’t know anyone who wakes up and says “well, I’d really like to be confused today”. That would be weird. Ask any man circling a roundabout for the third time, or the passengers going round the bend with him. It’s no fun. Why do we need to understand this mental ‘state’ better? This week the Samaritans mental health charity announced the UK suicide rate rose in 2018 by more than 11%. 6,507 individual stories. Suicide is always a tragedy, a forced loss not separate from the cultural and political noise of our time, coupled to individual pressures (financial, domestic, social). Individual stories and reasons are part of a Larger Mirror regarding the kind of “psychological climate” we are creating. Is it inclusive? Compassionate? Can we talk about shame, pain, regret, worry? Can we be human? In psychological terms, confusion is described as “a state of being unclear”. It is a small but powerful (and often disregarded) ingredient in the onset of anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation. ‘Confusion’ comes from the Latin ‘confundere’ meaning to mingle or pour together, making it sound like a noisy party, stimulating whilst it lasts, but messy to clear up. All words evolve over time, and ‘mingling’ turned (in Old French) into “overthrow and ruin”. Ever felt overthrown or ruined by confusion? That’s me in the supermarket aisle every week, comparing prices and product weights, factoring in children’s appetites and plastic pollution. Data pours in, mingles and ruins the calm. There’s plenty to distract, baffle and bombard us. You forget where you are, who you are, and why there’s a bumper box of Choco Flakes in your basket. But confusion is a natural and inevitable part of human experience, and our development. However, all this data-noise (inside our heads, plus outside pressures) accumulates. Nobody enjoys confusion. It does our heads in, and it can take people to the brink. So how can confusion can be a gift?

Confusion contains Fusion. Within dis-clarity, mental noise and overwhelm (which might trigger anxiety or low moods from feeling powerless) there is the whiff of a “new coming together”: a new insight, possibility, choice, value, a new way, even a new identity. Confusion carries purpose but takes time to get through. It is a needle pointing toward something new. Remember a time when confusion led, eventually, to an “a-ha!” Notice how physical energy changes as two neurons in the brain finally meet for the first time and confusion becomes a final (uncomfortable) step into new learning. Fusion: Old meets New. Tangled thinking becomes a straighter path. Here’s the thing: Fusion requires a gap (in fact, neurons in the brain talk to each other across synaptic gaps). Confused? Step back, create a gap. Be silent. The roots of our word ‘silence’ plunge down into an old Gothic verb ‘anasilan’, meaning “the wind dies down”, and the Latin ‘desinere’, a word meaning “stop”. Confusion is not helped by pouring in more and more data. Eventually numbers numb. Clarity comes when we Stop. Just stop. Let it settle. Come back to your breath, the beat of your heart, the blink of your eyes and the gaps between. Even in the supermarket. Be in the gap, overwhelmed by This Moment of Being Alive. Sink down from the over-thinking analytical mind to a deeper place your heart, your gut, your feet. In the context of mental health, from this place of new clarity - the space beyond the confusion - we find not just a WHAT of some new idea/possibility (for example, who to get help from), but also a WHY. Gaps create an open mind, open heart, open questions. A new awareness wants to come through in our culture (workplaces, schools, homes - and the garden of our own minds). In this troubling context of rising suicide rates and toxic politics with men (mostly) driving everyone round the bend for the umpteenth time, we must Stop. Get clear. Something new is coming through.

will protrude above the basket edge at this stage but this helps to keep the compost in place. Use good quality multipurpose compost, firming it gently, and fill the basket about half full.

Winter Hanging Baskets Hanging baskets are a great way to create a miniature gardening space with your choice of colours. Once established they make even the gloomiest back yard look more cheerful, or the prettiest patio look even more gorgeous. Making a hanging basket is not difficult and although traditionally a summer planting feature, they work just as well for the winter months. Plenty of plants make for a colourful basket and your local garden centre or nursery should have a good selection, including winter-flowering pansies (I am fond of the purple and yellow varieties) and heathers, Gaultheria with its waxy red berries, dianthus for late autumn into early winter and assorted miniature shrubs, including variegated Pieris, Choisya ternata ‘Sundance’ and variegated euonymus, to help give structure and colour.

The shrubs will look great in a container for a year or two, before being planted in the garden.

Although traditionally a summer planting feature, baskets work just as well for the winter months A thicker, almost felt-like liner provides insulation in cold weather as well as keeping the compost and plants in place. I suggest a 35cm (14”) diameter basket as it can take more plants and, because it is larger, resists cold better. You’ll also need compost. Stand the basket in a large flowerpot before you start to prevent it rolling about. Once the liner is in place, remove the chain at one anchor point to stop it getting in the way. The liner

Mesh baskets allow for easy side planting. Cut holes in the liner then insert small plants such as pansies at regular intervals around the sides of the basket, inserting them from the outside inwards to reduce damage. Nestle the roots into the compost and make sure that the liner is back in position after the last plant is in place. Add more compost to cover the roots of the side plantings and firm again gently. Next get the central plant in place and add three more upright plants such as miniature shrubs, equally spaced around the edges. For extra colour, add more winter bedding plants around the very outermost edge of the basket. Pinch out any faded flowers and add more compost, carefully filling in any gaps before watering thoroughly. Your hanging basket will soon fill out but stand it in a sheltered spot for a week or two to allow the roots to establish before hanging it in position, watering if necessary. Regular deadheading and removal of faded flowers plus a feed with a high potash fertiliser after about a month will keep it looking great, well into the spring. By Pippa Greenwood

Parlez vous... Arabic?

An Arabic speaking interpreter is needed by Hearts and Homes, a Bidford and Salford Priors based charity that has been working for nearly two years to raise money and meet the requirements of the British Government, so that we can host a vulnerable family that has suffered gravely from the civil war in Syria. Hearts and Homes is nearly ready to submit an application to the Home Office to host a family, but it is having difficulty in finding Arabic-speaking interpreters to help communications with the family. The family, which will have been through years of terrible ordeal, will need intensive interpretation assistance in their first week here, and regularly afterwards until their standard of English is adequate. Some of the money raised so far by Hearts and Homes can help pay for interpreters, so the time given doesn’t have to be voluntary. If you know someone who speaks Arabic and would be willing to give some time to help with interpreting, or know someone who does, please contact Michael Godfrey ASAP on 07725 878530.

Local optician, 2 times cancer-survivor, cycles London to Paris for Bloodwise Richard Fantom of Richard Fantom Eyecare is cycling from London to Paris to raise funds for Bloodwise on 19-22 September 2019. In August 2012 I was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma. Only a few months earlier I had felt healthy and well but by the time I was diagnosed with this very aggressive cancer I was gravely ill. I received superb treatment at the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire and was lucky enough to make a good recovery. I had intended to ride London to Paris in September 2018 but was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2018. I had surgery to remove the tumour from my humerus and then started chemotherapy at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 5 days before I was due to start the ride. Chemotherapy finished in January 2019 and I am recovering from that. This makes the challenge of riding over 500km to Paris greater, but my

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Bonner’s Jewellers in Alcester. Congratulations to Bonners Jewellers who, in October, will be celebrating 30 years of business in Alcester. To celebrate, they asked if we would feature a message of thanks to their customers and friends from near and far...

I

t began as a hunt for a fish and chip shop, and thirty years on we are thrilled to be celebrating another milestone anniversary!

We have specialised in antique and pre loved jewellery throughout the decades but are also well known for our jewellery, watch and clock repair service as well as being a great source of affordable silver perfect for stocking fillers. We may also have a reputation for being the most raucous shop in the town as we are regularly the focal point for a laugh and a giggle, and we are proud of the fact that many of our customers are also friends who feel comfortable enough to pop in purely for a catch up.

Thank you so much for your support and loyalty. We wouldn’t be here without it; here’s to the next thirty! Yours, Ray, Elaine, Sarah, Matthew, Nichola and Nick x

Family businesses can only survive in areas where the notion of family extends into the community, and we feel blessed to have been part of the big family of Alcester for all these years.

silky-smooth petrol and diesel engines seal the deal. There’s the all-conquering SQ7 available too – which puts many ‘normal’ performance cars to shame. Tesla Model X Representing the electric contingent is Tesla’s Model X. Spaceship-like in design, it’s a real looker out on the road. A realistic 300-mile all-electric range means it’s usable for long-distance drivers, too.

These are the best sevenseaters on sale today Need plenty of space, both for luggage and occupants too? You’ll want a seven-seater then. Fortunately there are plenty of options, offering a choice of body styles from a variety of brands. But which are best? Land Rover Discovery This list was always destined to feature Land Rover’s goanywhere Discovery. As well as seven comfortable seats, its offroad technology makes it just as capable at scaling steep inclines as it is making the weekly shopping run. It’s expensive, but the Discovery comes loaded with equipment and is available with a range of engine choices. Volvo XC90 The first-generation XC90 stormed the market thanks to its rock-solid build quality and efficiency. The latest edition continues the legacy, albeit with a lot more technology and equipment. It’s also one of the safest cars on the market thanks to a raft of assistance systems. For

34 connectionmags.co.uk

families, there are few better options than the XC90. Seat Alhambra For the best possible passenger space, look no further than the Seat Alhambra. It may be a little outdated inside, but makes up for it with a huge amount of interior room. It’s also surprisingly good to drive, and frugal, too. As the Alhambra is not a new model, you’re likely to find good deals at the forecourt. Skoda Kodiaq Skoda hit the nail on the sevenseater head when it released the Kodiaq. Rock-solid build quality and incredible value for money meant that this Czech SUV enjoyed immediate popularity and has continued to do so. It’s available with a range of efficient engines too, including a new performance-orientated model, the Kodiaq vRS. Audi Q7 The big Q7 flies the flag for premium manufacturers here, offering that top-notch driving experience you’d expect from an Audi. A high-quality interior and

Though it may be expensive to buy outright, the Model X justifies its high price tag with minimal running costs and plenty of performance. Mercedes GLS The Mercedes GLS takes the fight to the Audi Q7, and having recently been updated, packs more technology and features than ever before. A longer wheelbase than the car it replaces means there’s more space than before, and improved legroom for all occupants. The interior of the car has been vastly overhauled, with a full widescreen infotainment system helping to give the cabin a particularly high-tech feel. Ford S-Max Though Ford’s S-Max has been around a little while now, it’s still one of the best-driving seven-seaters around, and offers genuine practicality as well. A range of frugal engines help to keep trips to the pump to a minimum, and build quality is solid. A range-topping Vignale is now available, though even lower trims get a vast amount of standard equipment. James Baggott

BACK OF THE NET

Just when we thought it was safe to go back in to the watery depths of a new football season, with VAR ready to assist referees with their sometimes dodgy, but understandably wrong decisions, the new ruling throws up more problems. We all know that refs make mistakes, after all, they are only human and yet to be born is the person who hasn’t made a mistake in their life. Plus they have to make split second decisions, without the constant replays we all see on our TVs. Enter VAR to help with those decisions. But there are rules behind how VAR can be deployed and these rules seem to be muddying the waters. We have already seen it with Villa’s ruled out goal against Crystal Palace, when Grealish was booked for a dive. Everyone in the game,

“And it’s OOOH AHHH VAR...” except the referee at the time, knew that play should have been allowed to continue and a goal given, but the whistle was blown far too soon. Then last evening Liverpool had a penalty given when many in the game believe the Napoli striker dived and that the VAR officials should have reversed the ref’s decision. But it was deemed to not be a ‘clear and obvious error’, so the decision stood. So VAR still has a way to go in order to be given the thumbs up, but in my opinion it is the way to go to improve decisions and stop cheating. As an aside, whether or not Robertson’s tackle should have conceded a penalty, if defenders continue to tackle using the ‘wrong leg’, i.e. going across the opponents body, they will continue to give away free kicks and penalties. Agree? The season is still young so I hope our local teams dont get too carried away with early success or failure. Best of luck to the team you follow. Till next time...

hat a summer of cricket! I was able to summarise the epic World Cup in the last edition and now we can close off the year with The Ashes, but first - local matters. Huge congratulations to Exhall & Wixford CC who have been crowned Cotswold Hills League champions for the first time since 2015. An emphatic win from one of the nicest local clubs around. Bidford on Avon CC and Great Alne CC had great summers too, both sides earning promotion from Division 4 after a hard fought season which saw Bidford come out on top. Elsewhere Alcester & Ragley lost their battle to stay in the top flight and Temple Grafton CC narrowly avoided relegation from Division 2 on the final weekend of the season. Welford, Exhall 2nds and Alcester 2nds all had solid seasons in Divisions Four and Five of the CHL. On to The Ashes. For the first time in twenty years I really see the argument for making cricket available on free to air television. Despite the money from Sky having enabled the ECB to grow English cricket, and ultimately lead to the World Cup victory - you can’t help but feel that the momentum that the

38 connectionmags.co.uk

final generated in July has stalled somewhat. How many youngsters, having watched the World Cup Final have missed the entirety of the subsequent test series against the old enemy, Australia. Missed Steve Smith’s incredible batting, Stuart Broad’s return to form as a bowler, Jofra Archer’s blistering introduction to the five day game and probably most of all, Ben Stokes’ generational innings at Headingley in August to single-handedly construct a victory when all hope was lost. It’s a catch 22. The ECB are reliant on the money Sky offer, but without national exposure, cricket itself runs the risk of being lost to a generation. The tail off since England won the Ashes in 2005, when the series was shown on Channel 4 and 8.4 million people watched England win (compared to a peak viewership of 467,000 this summer) has caused immeasurable damage to the game at grass roots level. Surely the powers that be can work something out? Anyway. My kitbag is away. My whites are clean for the first time since May and it’s time to start looking forward to next summer again. Until next year all...

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ALCESTER The most common scams.

The number of scams reported to Action Fraud jumped by 6.4% between 2017-18 and 2018-19, ‘Which? Money’ analysis found. Of the 535,390 fraud reports made to Action Fraud over this two-year period, 239,206 fell into four categories. Online shopping fraud – can involve online sellers duping customers into making a purchase and disappearing without delivering the goods. Advance fee fraud usually involve victims being asked to pay an upfront fee in return for future benefits, like a bogus estate agent requiring a deposit on a non-existent property. Computer fixing fraud typically involves a cold call with a scammer posing as an IT specialist working for a brand such as Microsoft and convincing victims their computer is at risk and that they have to hand over a fee to fix it – and in some cases pass on details that allow fraudsters access. Cheque, card and online bank fraud occurs when your card or chequebook is stolen or cloned or a scammer manages to gain access to your online account to steal money. rising high above the city and the Red River spanned by the Esplanade Riel. Honouring Manitoba’s founder and Métis leader, this iconic pedestrian bridge connects the Forks to the French Quarter, a lovely relaxing place with early 1900s facades, restaurants, pastry shops and the rebuilt St Boniface cathedral, Mother Church of Western Canada. Equally enticing are Little Italy, Chinatown and the cool Osborne Village, well known for street art and ethnic eateries.

Winnipeg, Canada’s Gateway to the West On the edge of the prairies, Winnipeg is one of the sunniest cities in Canada, multicultural, vibrant and the capital of Manitoba. Named ‘Muddy Waters’ after the big lake out of town, it is located at the confluence of the Red River and the smaller Assiniboine where, before the Europeans arrived, the First Nations had been trading for thousands of years. Times have changed but set in acres of greenery, the ‘Forks’ remain a popular meeting place. In this National Historic Site, converted warehouses and new buildings beckon with craft shops and gleaming stores, al fresco cafés and a convivial market hall serving food from all over the world. Here’s the Old Spaghetti Factory, there a rail carriage full of Victorian candy, an art exhibition or the observation tower for stunning city views. Down by the water, wild flowers wave in the breeze, Canadian geese peck undisturbed and

locals stroll quietly along the river or meditate under the trees, inspired by a painting or a poem on the back of a lonely seat. There’s bright sunshine in summer, dazzling ice in winter for skating on a rink or on the river trails used by commuters on their way to work.

Winnipeg claims the only museum in the world fully dedicated to human rights On the northern bank of the Assiniboine, the grand Legislative Building is topped by a golden statue of Hermes, the god of trade, while around the corner, close to the Forks, Winnipeg claims the only museum in the world fully dedicated to human rights. In an innovative spiralling building inspired by mountains, clouds and prairies, twelve galleries lead up to the Tower of Hope,

/theconnectionmag

Meanwhile, in the southwest, the Assiniboine Park Zoo is a treat for animal lovers, its highly praised conservation project caring for almost 200 species on 80 acres of ground from pools and enclosures to dens and rugged areas. Spot a rare snow leopard or red panda, look out for reindeer, Arctic fox, yak, tiger, camels, snakes, poisoned dart frogs, butterflies and birds such as the colourful scarlet ibis, and much more. But most breathtaking is the ‘Journey to Churchill’, exhibiting the different habitats of North Manitoba and – in the best natural environment – looking after polar bears whose life would otherwise be threatened. Some are orphaned cubs, others fully-grown creatures who acquired a taste for human flesh. Also loved by everyone in the park area is the statue of Lieutenant Harry Colebourn and the young bear he rescued, calling her Winnie after Winnipeg, his Canadian home, and who was the inspiration for the legendary character of Winnie-the-Pooh. Community Sta ar E arlier this year, in our June/ July edition, we called on our readers to nominate a ‘Community Star’, our intention being to honour someone from one of our distribution areas who has contributed something special to where they live and work. Trying to choose just one person was no mean feat as the entries were varied and all were deserving winners in their own right. So, without much further ado, we are delighted to accounce that our first ‘Community Star’ is Mr Alan (Benji) Benjamin, who we presented with a hamper of delicious goodies in recognition of his contributions to the local communities over the years. Benji was nominated by his daughter-in-law, Lisa, for his work in years gone by with the police service as a Schools & Liaison Officer as well as more recently for entertaining attendees at the Alcester Cafe with his musical talents. A familiar face in the Alcester area, some of you may recognise Benji for his past locksmithing work or perhaps you’ve seen him perform as part of local folk band, ‘The Startled Ferrets’ or ‘The Barn Dance band’. A man of many talents, Benji’s musical skills have seen him conducting the St Benedict’s R.C. High School’s orchestra up until 1998 and, more recently, putting smiles on faces at the Alcester Cafe, a weekly drop in at The Jubilee Hall that supports people with dementia and their carers. At the latter of these, people both with and without dementia enjoy joining in and reliving their musical memories as Benji plays and sings songs from years gone by. Although Benji has been retired from the police service for quite some time, his work as a Schools & Youth Liaison Officer had a fantastic impact on

48 connectionmags.co.uk

young people across Stratfordon-Avon district. Starting in the role in 1989, he was a familiar face in a number of local high schools and helped many a scout, cub, guide and brownie get their ‘Crime Prevention’ badges. He also enjoyed supervising industrial geography field trips over to the old Massey Ferguson & Landrover plants in Solihull. Sport also features in Benji’s life and he’s spent time as a rugby referee as well as enjoying the British summers as part of Temple Grafton Cricket Club. When we met with Benji to present him with his prize hamper, I asked him what he considered to be the most important lesson he’d learnt from his work in the community over the years... “Smile and be happy. What else can you do? Life’s too short.”

Can you help us find our next community star?

Send in your nominations now by email, Facebook message or over the phone (details below). We’ll need your name, email address and telephone number as well as the nominee’s name and the reason for your nomination (no other personal details of the nominated star, though!). We’ll announce the winner in November and present them with a very special prize to recognise their contributions. Send your nominations to: info@connectionmags.co.uk with Community Star in the subject line, or message us at facebook.com/theconnectionmag Alternatively, phone 01789 491005. Deadline for entries is Friday 1st November. Our Privacy Policy can be found at www.connectionmags.co.uk
