Apparently the days are starting to get lighter, but I’m definitely still feeling very wintery. While I write this, it’s blowing a gale outside and there have been a few local flood warnings too. Fingers crossed that the springtime sun will soon be back and with it the sights of bulbs pushing through, birds building their nests and animals slowly coming out of hibernation. Or they could all be woken up early by the sounds of a jubilant Bidford “havin’ it large” at the Crawford Memorial Hall on 8th February with a special fundraiser for Bidford Youth Club. Read more about the ‘TOWIB’ event on page 54. Lots of dates for the diary over the next couple of months including 14th February (Valentine’s Day); 25th February is Shrove Tuesday (we have a special pancake recipe on page 10 for you); 17th March (St Patrick’s Day); 22nd March is Mothering Sunday; and on 29th March the clocks spring forward an hour. Obviously, more important than any of those is the real indicator of Spring’s imminence - the Rotary Big Breakfasts in Bidford and Alcester on 7th & 14th March respectively (p.59). Our foxy front cover nods to some gems hidden inside these pages. We have a new series of articles penned by local sports fanatics, our first coming from an avid Nottingham Forest supporter (p.14). Continuing on the theme of sports, we find out about 14 year old Jude’s Go Karting passion (p.22. He’s one of our deliverers and have been assured he doesn’t do his round in a racing car). Another young local gets a mention after winning a £500 bursary for the Shakespeare Hospice (p.28). Our puzzle page (p.48) returns to wake up your grey matter and we also have a new index of Special Offers on page 60. Book lovers can find suggestions for reads they might have missed over the years on page 8. Get tips for the noisy sleepers in your life (if you don’t have one, maybe it’s you?!) with our spotlight on snoring (p.16). Budding gardeners, get prepared for a bountiful season of veggies with our green fingered tips (p.18-20). Get to grips with new family friendly games. Board and card games are once again taking the world by storm and we’ve got some fantastic suggestions for if you’re fed up of Monopoly tantrums (p.24). Plus, motoring, travel, community and more besides! Until next time...

Give an old book a chance Love a good browse in a second-hand book shop? You might want to keep an eye out for these books…

His Dark Materials – Phillip Pullman If you loved the BBC series but haven’t yet delved into the original books, what on earth is stopping you? Starting with the Northern Lights, this trilogy takes the reader on a journey with Lyra Belacqua. With her daemon Pantalaimon by her side, Lyra sets out on a quest to rescue her best friend and discover the secret of Dust. Along the way, she’ll befriend witches, Gyptians, an armoured bear and a boy from another world, while pitting her wits against the all-powerful Magisterium.

8

Tales of the City – Armistead Maupin This series of nine books starts in the late seventies and centres around the inhabitants of 28 Barbary Lane, including the naive but ambitious Mary Ann Singleton, the matriarchal Anna Madrigal and the best-friend-you-wishyou-had Michael Tolliver (AKA Mouse). Maupin is a skilled storyteller and skilfully weaves together numerous plotlines and character arcs to create a stonkingly good series you’ll want to binge read your way through.

Heroes and Villains – Angela Carter In a post-apocalyptic world, Marianne looks down from her ivory tower as her brother is murdered in the streets below. Years later, she helps the murderer to hide, runs away with him to his Barbarian tribe and is forced to become his bride. Dream-like, disquieting and beautiful, Heroes and Villains is one of Carter’s lesser-known books but my personal favourite.

The Wee Free Men – Terry Pratchett Would-be witch Tiffany Aching sets out to rescue her brother from the fairies and stop them from invading her home. She’s only armed with a frying pan, but luckily she has help in the form of the Nac Mac Feegle – they may be tiny, but they’re fierce, fast and loyal. Technically, this was written as a children’s book, but don’t let that put you off – it’ll appeal to fantasy lovers of all ages.

/theconnectionmag

The Choice – Edith Eger Edith Eger was on the brink of death when she was freed from Auschwitz. This is her story. It’s certainly harrowing in parts, but also uplifting, reaffirming and full of hope. Edith realised that burying her past doesn’t make it easier to live with. Instead, she learnt how to move past her trauma, build the life she deserves and help thousands of other survivors to do the same. The Clan of the Cave Bear – Jean M. Auel The first book in the Earth’s Children series, The Clan of the Cave Bear centres around Ayla, a young girl raised by Neanderthals in prehistoric Europe. Ayla faces prejudice and suspicion but, with the help of her adopted mother Iza, is eventually accepted by most of the clan. A powerful, wellresearched, epic tale. You don’t even need to wait for the next instalment to come out as all six are just waiting for you to find them.

Bananas in Blankets Try something different on Pancake Day with these delicious pancake-wrapped bananas. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat!

Ready in 45 minutes | Makes 8

Ingredients 100g plain flour Pinch of salt 1 large egg 300ml milk 25g butter 8 small bananas, peeled 4 tbsp ready-made chocolate sauce, warmed Icing sugar and cocoa powder, to dust

TIP

Mint sprigs, to decorate (optional)

Sift the flour into a large bowl, add the salt and make a well in the centre. Add the egg and beat with a balloon whisk, gradually drawing in the flour. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking all the time, until you have a smooth batter which is about the consistency of single cream. Cover the jug and leave the batter to stand for about 30 minutes to allow the starch grains in the flour to soften and expand – this will give a lighter pancake. Whisk in a splash of milk or water if the batter has thickened slightly. Heat a knob of the butter in a medium sized non-stick frying pan until almost smoking then quickly ladle in enough of the batter to thinly cover the base of the pan, swirling the pan to give an even layer. Cook for 1-2 minutes until small air bubbles appear in the pancake then flip it over and cook for a further minute until golden. Repeat with the rest of the mixture to make 8 pancakes in total, adding more butter to the pan as needed. Wrap a warm pancake around each banana. Halve each wrapped banana and serve drizzled with warm chocolate sauce and dusted with icing sugar and cocoa powder. Decorate with a sprig of mint, if liked.

You can make the pancakes a day in advance. Stack on a plate, interleaved with baking paper. Cover and chill in the fridge. Reheat for a few seconds in the microwave.

Great care and quality of life? That’s Ambleside Many people still believe that care homes are places where older people sit around a lounge watching TV or dozing. But Care UK’s Ambleside care home in Stratfordupon-Avon is changing opinions with a whole new approach to care home living. elements, including visits from miniature ponies and alpacas! “In fact, animals are very popular at Ambleside, so we ensure there’s always a fourlegged friend popping in for a cuddle, whether it’s a friendly cat or a pet therapy dog.” Making wishes come true “Mum enjoys the live music, the trips out and the many clubs. She’s made lots of friends, and with so much to do, she’s settled in brilliantly.” So says Jen, whose mother, Chrissy, recently moved to Care UK’s Ambleside care home in Stratford-uponAvon. Ambleside, on Evesham Road in Dodwell, provides residential, nursing and dementia care for up to 60 older people. The home is rated ‘good’ by the CQC for the quality of its care, which includes supporting residents to enjoy a superb lifestyle. Promoting health and wellbeing Wendy, the Lifestyle Lead at Ambleside, explains. “Ambleside is all about quality of life. The home is purpose-built, with its own café, cinema, hair salon and

landscaped gardens – which residents make full use of. We also organise a wealth of activities that are tailored to residents’ interests. “Keeping busy and independent is the key to health and happiness in later life,” Wendy says. “When a person is doing things that bring them meaning, in a setting where they feel safe, they’ll be relaxed and happy. And this is hugely beneficial to their mood, mental health and overall wellbeing. Activities and alpacas “We learn all we can about every new resident who joins us, so that we can create meaningful activities for them to enjoy. Our weekly lifestyle programme includes regular activities, such as exercise sessions, baking and live entertainment. There are also more unusual

“We’re passionate about enabling residents to continue making new memories and enjoying each day,” Wendy continues. “We have so much fun making residents’ wishes come true. We’ve toured the local Guide Dogs centre at a resident’s request. We’ve supported a gentleman to visit Stoney Cove Dive Centre, where he taught. We’ve also treated a former ballerina to a night at the ballet. If it’s possible, we’ll make it happen at Ambleside.” Experience the Ambleside difference for yourself If you’d like to find out more about the superb care and lifestyle enjoyed by residents at Ambleside, please call the friendly team on 01789 868 641, email julia.joy@careuk.com or visit careuk.com/ambleside Follow us on Facebook

My Team

Greg Hallett kicks off our new sseries of sporting artices, recalling the Nottingham Forest glory days, his prevailing love of Ghana and his own very speecial team of supporters.

I

was born in Ghana, West Africa and didn’t get settled back into the UK until 1967 when I was 6, so my interest in football didn’t really begin until after then. We moved to North Nottinghamshire, so I had a choice of Mansfield, Chesterfield, Notts County or Nottingham Forest, none of whom were pulling up trees at that time. I suppose at a stretch we could have chosen Derby who were doing well. So I chose Forest as most of my school friends supported Mansfield Town, but their kit was dreadful and I always liked to be different. I have never waivered, even when we have flattered to deceive and offered periods of hope before drifting back to relative obscurity and mid-table anonymity. My brother was taken to watch a Forest game and, a couple of years later, I was allowed to go too. I would have been about 11, so around 1973. Please note that ‘Ole big-ed’, Brian Clough, didn’t arrive until January 1975. I watched some trash for a while as Forest were an ordinary club, albeit with a reasonable fan base. When Cloughie arrived everything changed and watching Forest became a privilege not a chore. I went to a few games when we

A young me at the City Ground

14 connectionmags.co.uk

scraped promotion to the old Division 1 (now Premiership) and you could sense that exciting things were happening. One of my teachers at secondary school organised the ball boys at Forest and Notts County, so myself and seven others would often be ball boys at the City Ground in the year we won promotion, and then amazingly won Division 1 (1977/78), then for a couple of years after that too. I was honoured to have seen the great man at work and watch a mix of players become a ‘Team’. They surprised everyone, week in week out. Brian Clough had the vision to see ‘thuggish’ number 9’s (Burns) become classy centre halves; players who were ‘finished’ then lift trophies; carpet-fitters (Birtles) become England Internationals and anonymous, lightweight nobodies (McGovern) captain a team who took all before them. Oh, what a time to watch them! I was a ball-boy at Wembley when Forest beat Southampton in the League cup 3-2 in 1979, and even more memorably at the City Ground when we beat Liverpool 2-0 in the first leg of round 1 of the European Cup. If I have a 2nd team then it’s Ghana. I support England of course, but always look out for Ghana in tournaments and was gutted when they were cheated out of a World Cup Semi-Final in 2010. Outside of football, I have witnessed and benefitted from ‘teamwork’ to the ultimate levels

/theconnectionmag

over the past 18 months. In July 18 I had major emergency surgery to removve a tumour in my bowel. Unfortun nately, the cancer had spread an nd can’t be cured, so as a family we have needed support in so many ways.

Greg & Julie, his wife .

We immediately set up #TeamHallett on Facebook as a means of being able to communicate updates and good and bad news. Pretty soon we had 250+ followers all offering love, kindness, support and, most importantly, prayer. Whether the news is good or bad they have been there for us as a family and have been the best demonstration of a ‘team’ I could ever have experienced. If you are interested, during my cancer battle I felt inspired to write some poetry and it ended up as a collection of 40, available on Amazon for just £12.99. Look for “A Hunger and a Thirst” by Greg Hallett.

Snoring: It’s no laughing matter Forget ‘unreasonable behaviour’ – snoring is now recognised to be a top reason for divorce – along with fishing and becoming vegetarian! (Daily Express, January 2018) 20 million Brits claim they are sleep deprived by their partner’s snoring, reported The Sun in 2017. We may think snoring is funny, but this is hardly the case. Usually, the partner suffers the most. Sleeping on the sofa every night takes its toll, with ruined relationships and broken marriages. So what causes snoring? Is it bad for our health? What can be done about it? What Causes Snoring? Snoring is caused by something partially blocking your mouth and the back of your throat. While you are sleeping, and when you breathe in, this blockage causes that noise we all know so well – a snore. What can cause such a blockage? Excess mucus/catarrh from smoking, alcohol, which causes the muscles and tissues of the palate to become floppy, and fat, in people who are overweight or obese, when pads of fatty tissue accumulate in these areas and literally wobble in the breeze! Allergies are also sometimes responsible. House dust mite, animal dander, pollens, yeasts and moulds are common allergens.

16 connectionmags.co.uk

Snoring is associated with sleeping flat on your back and breathing in through your mouth, not your nose. Lying on your side and nasal breathing helps reduce snoring. Sleep Apnoea Snoring is dangerous if it causes ‘sleep apnoea’. In this condition, a severe blockage to airflow temporarily starves your brain of oxygen. You briefly stop breathing altogether, but then your breathing starts up again. This causes a strain on your heart, makes you feel constantly tired and can have life-threatening consequences. What Can Be Done to Reduce Snoring? Making lifestyle changes is the best long-term treatment. Stopping smoking, moderating or stopping drinking alcohol and losing weight are strongly recommended. Reduce the risk of allergy by regular vacuuming, damp dusting and keeping the bedroom petfree. Use hypoallergenic bedding. Products for Snorers and Snoring Sufferers First step? A pair of foam rubber earplugs for your partner! Anti-snoring products are readily

/theconnectionmag

available. For example, nasal strips to hold the airways open or a ‘Neti pot’, which uses salt water to flush the airways before bedtime. Best results are likely with a mandibular device –a special type of gum shield that holds the tongue and jaw forward, keeping the airway open while you sleep. The Antisnoor device is an adhesive patch you wear on your forehead that detects snoring and vibrates to prompt you to turn over. Smart Nora is an anti-snoring pillow that listens out for snoring and inflates to encourage you to change your head position. The Importance of Sleep Getting adequate and good quality sleep is vital. Lack of sleep is associated with strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, cancer, and shortens our lifespan. Adults are recommended to sleep for seven to nine hours per night. Snoring it seems, is a serious business! Visit the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association (BSSAA) website for advice and anti-snoring products www.britishsnoring.co.uk. growing. You can grow cucumbers from seed, but the seeds are generally extremely pricey and not the easiest to germinate, so speed things up with a couple of chunky plants instead. For growing in the garden choose ‘ridge’ cucumbers, as these perform better outside.

Easy Veg Growing This is a perfect time to get to grips with some ‘Grow Your Own’ and make growing your own vegetables easier than you might think! Start by deciding on what you’d like to eat, picked fresh from your garden over the coming year. Think salads, herbs and classic main meal vegetables because there is still time to grow just about anything you please. Some vegetables are best grown from seed – the classics are carrots; with those long, fleshy roots they simply hate being transplanted, so grab a packet of seed and as soon as the soil is not too wet sow a row or two. You can always choose interestingly coloured varieties such as ‘Purple Haze’ or ‘Purple Dragon’ if you want to ring the changes or persuade a less-than-eager family member to give carrots another chance. Salad leaves cost a fortune when sold in packets and are

18 connectionmags.co.uk

often none too fresh, so sow a few rows or pots of these too and within a few weeks they’ll be growing strongly enough for you to harvest your first delicious meal. If you make small sowings every two weeks or so you can ensure a pretty well continuous supply of salad throughout the summer and well into autumn. If you’ve got a warm, sunny spot in your garden, or, better still, a greenhouse or frame, then it’s definitely worth getting some tomatoes. These too can be raised from seed but if you’re only after a few plants, and especially if you’d like to have a few different varieties, then it’s often better value (and a lot easier) to buy yourself some small gardenready plants. Make sure you get the right sort for the accommodation you’ve got to offer – catalogues or labels should clearly state if they’re for ‘greenhouse’ or ‘outdoor’

/theconnectionmag

If time is short then vegetable plants are a great choice for most crops. You can send off for them now and then you’ve no need to do time-consuming potting on and pricking out. Get them in quantities to suit the size of your plot, and if they come in quantities too large for the space you have available, then share a pack or two with friends and save some cash too! Check what size of plant you’re buying if you choose mail order and go for gardenready sizes if possible – that way you’ll be able to plant them out straight away, or at most grow them on in pots for a couple of weeks. If you send off for vegetable plants make sure you unwrap them the moment they arrive; left in the packaging they’ll soon deteriorate. If you can’t plant them straight away, do so as soon as possible, but water the compost if necessary and pot each root ball into some compost after removing the packaging. At this time of year there is often a lot of rain and wet weather so the soil is really wet. Try covering the soil Continued on page 20

with a polythene sheet or a polythene covered pull-out tunnel for a couple of weeks before your plants are due to arrive, then remove it just before planting out. Similarly, if you are sowing your vegetables from seed then the soil may be too wet for the seed to germinate and they may rot instead. By covering the area where you want to sow, you keep off excessive rain and allow the soil to warm up a little beforehand. When small plants arrive or if you buy them from garden centres and local nurseries they can often still be a little

tender. Make sure that frosts are past before you plant the more tender crops out, and give them a chance to gradually acclimatise to their new surroundings by covering them with cloches or fleece for a few days. If you’ve ever struggled to grow your own vegetables from seed or from plants bought in the garden centre, I’ve got a great solution: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ is perfect for anyone who needs a bit of help and advice. Visit my website www.pippagreenwood. com and you can choose

from a good selection of great quality and UK-grown gardenready vegetable plants. Once the plants have been delivered you’ll get weekly emails from me telling you just what you need to do to prepare the ground and how best to plant and look after your growing vegetables. The at-yourelbow-advice emails will be full of timely reminders, hints and tips, and will only be about the crops you have bought. This saves you time, and makes it much easier to get a good and seriously tasty crop from your plants. By Pippa Greenwood

At Pippa’s website (www.pippagreenwood.com) you’ll find stylish cloches, practical and pretty plant supports, the fantastic SpeedHoe, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and the ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa’ system. Or book Pippa for a talk at your gardening club.

live for up to 12 years¹. Hamsters Hamsters are nocturnal creatures, and although very playful when awake they may not be the best pet if you and your family are expecting lots of daytime interaction and entertainment.

Choosing a small family pet If you’re thinking of buying a small pet, how do you know which one would be best for your family? Some love human interaction and will happily play for hours, but others prefer to stay in their own environment where they feel safe. Rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters are all very popular as small family pets – here are a few pointers to help you decide. Rabbits Rabbits can make great family pets but they’re easily startled by loud noises and sudden movement. They’re very entertaining to watch and can have charming personalities, but owning a rabbit is a long-term commitment as they can

Guinea pigs Guinea pigs are very gentle creatures by nature and they thrive if they’re with others of their own kind. Buying more than one guinea pig may be a good idea, therefore, but you need to make sure that you either buy two females or a pair where the males are neutered. Buying a pet is a huge responsibility regardless of size. One of the most important considerations is to go to a trustworthy breeder who takes time to explain the care that’s required and makes sure you understand the commitment you’re making. ¹www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/how-long-dorabbits-live www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/choosing-rightsmall-pet www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/rodents/ guineapigs/company

J

ude Fernihough from Honeybourne has had a successful first season in the X30 Junior class at the Whilton Mill Kart Club, near Rugby, finishing fourth in the 2019 Championship, and has high hopes for even more success in 2020. Aged fourteen, Jude first got behind the wheel of a go kart when he was 7 years old, on a family holiday and has never looked back. “He was naturally good at driving and showed no signs of fear”, says his dad, Ashley, a motorsport enthusiast. But his interest in racing started much earlier. Inspired by a day at the British Grand Prix, aged 5, Jude had the opportunity to go pit-side and meet some of the F1 legends, including Jenson Button, Nico Rosberg and Damon Hill. Being this close to the action, and with all the excitement on the track, was the beginning of Jude’s love for racing, and all things fast! He soon progressed from the Play Station Gran Turismo game to competitive junior racing at Worcester indoor karting but realised the best and fastest action was on the outdoor circuits. In 2017 Jude got his National Karting Competition Licence and joined forces with Jack Dex Racing, as a novice driver in the X30 Mini class. “Jack Dex has been brilliant at helping me improve my driving skills and race technique”, says Jude. “The team makes sure I have the best set up for the circuit and the conditions and I get excellent coaching before and after each race.” In his first year of competitive racing, Jude enjoyed podium finishes at Shennington and Whilton Mill circuits, and quickly moved up to the Junior category last year. This was a big step up, with more experienced drivers and a significantly larger grid making it fiercely competitive. Practice and

racing experience in all weather conditions makes all the difference, so Jude, with his Dad’s support, expanded his competition entries - travelling up and down the country at weekends to compete at circuits attracting the very best drivers in his class from around the UK. “Karting is now a huge part of our lives – Jude’s younger brother is even learning to mechanic for him!” said Ashley. As he prepares for his first race weekend of the 2020 season, Jude is feeling upbeat and confident about his prospects this year in the X30 Junior class. “2019 was a big learning curve. With a few podium finishes under my belt, I’m now ready to take on the top drivers” said Jude. “The MS Kart that I drive is very competitive and I’m confident I will be more consistent at winning races this season.” Team Manager Jack Dex thinks Jude has everything to race for this year. “Karting is a lot harder than it looks and I’m really happy with the progress Jude is making. He is a promising driver and has the right attitude for success.” Karting is an expensive hobby and Jude works hard to pay his way. He is part of the Connection Magazine delivery team earning extra cash to help fund his hobby. In 2020, Jude will race with the support of two sponsors – Pro-Tek, an engineering business based in Bidford, and Neil Willies Insurance Brokers Ltd, a local business offering insurance services for commercial and private clients. points instead of alcoholic shots. While it’s aimed at ages 12 and up, my eight year old loves it (we just skip the questions he doesn’t understand).

Family Games Night Fed up of Monopoly? Bored to tears of Snakes and Ladders? If you’re in need of a new game to keep the kids occupied on a wet winter’s day, check out this little lot… Exploding Kittens, ages 7+, 2-5 players A card game of strategy, luck and vendettas, Exploding Kittens is easy to learn and a whole heap of fun to play. It’s a bit like Uno, but with humorous illustrations and cards like ‘Deploy the thousand year back hair’ and ‘Don a portable cheetah butt’. It only takes 20 minutes to play so makes a great post-dinner, pre-homework treat. Find it at www.amazon. co.uk. Atlantis Escape, ages 8+, single player This puzzle game sees the player trying to find the quickest way to the boat before Atlantis sinks. There are 60 challenges to complete, which should keep the kids occupied for a little while at least. It’s single player and compact, so perfect for long journeys – see www. smarttoysandgames.co.uk.

Asteroid Escape, ages 8+, single player As with Atlantis Escape, the player needs to navigate their way through the board in this travel puzzle game. Again, there are 60 challenges to complete. It’s ideal for problem-solving space lovers. Also available from www. smarttoysandgames.co.uk. Pointing Fingers, ages 12+, 3-6 players With this game, it pays to know your opponents. Who is most likely to have done, or consider doing, the action on the card? Pointing Fingers is a bit like Never Have I Ever, but with

Dobble, ages 6+, 2-8 players Dobble is a card game with a difference. To win a hand, you have to find the matching symbol on two cards. Simple, but fast-moving, ultracompetitive and a lot of fun, Dobble is a firm favourite with families across the globe. There are five ways to play, and a new Harry Potter themed spin-off was released last year. See www.asmodee. co.uk. Bears versus Zombies, ages 10+, 2-5 players Players build monsters using cards to defend themselves against the marauding babies. The better the monster, the more likely it is to defeat the baby army and score the player some points. This quick-to-learn, quick-to-play game is bizarre but a lot of fun. While it’s recommended for players aged 10 and up, younger children should be able to master it with a little extra help. It’s available from www.amazon.co.uk. Ticket to Ride, ages 8+, 2-5 players Ticket to Ride first came out in 2004 and has since released several spin-offs, including Ticket to Ride Europe. Players compete to claim train routes across the board. (It’s a lot more fun than it sounds.) Great for strategic thinkers, Ticket to Ride takes a few minutes to learn and can be played in around an hour. See www.amazon.co.uk. By Kate Duggan

Ambassador Abi wins a Lion’s share for The Shakespeare Hospice

O

n Saturday 11 January, Abi Hutchinson, a student volunteer at The Shakespeare Hospice, represented the Shakespeare Lions Club at the District Finals for Lions International Young Ambassador 2020 and she won! Abi’s presentation wowed the judges and she won a £500 bursary for the Stratford upon Avon based hospice. The Lions Young Ambassador Competition recognises, encourages and supports young people (age 15-18) who are actively involved in helping others and Abi was up against some fierce competition, with three worthy candidates in the District Final. Abi, a student at Stratford Girls Grammar School, presented to judges her vision for a project that focused on bereaved teenagers and a non-traditional support network to help

tackle feelings of isolation and build friendships with others in the same situation. This is a subject close to her heart, as Abi has been through the loss of a parent in her teens, and she wants to dispel the stereotype of typical bereavement sessions and make them fun and engaging. Abi not only volunteers in the Marketing and Fundraising Team every week, but she also volunteers for the junior young carer sessions held at the Hospice once a fortnight, in partnership with Warwickshire Young Carers. The competition judges said that Abi stood out as a great young person who is doing amazing work supporting isolated bereaved youngsters at The Shakespeare Hospice. The Shakespeare Hospice Day Hospice is the largest standalone Day Hospice in the West Midlands. The Children’s and Family Support Service helps to support on average 100 children each year aged between 4 to

18 years old. The Children’s Bereavement service had over 97 new referrals last year and provided 700 one to one sessions. Abi said, “I’m so grateful to the Hospice for giving me the support to run for the Lions competition. I am so excited to begin my bereavement project and to support teens in a new and exciting way.” Peter Humberston, President of the Shakespeare Lions said, “All our selected Shakespeare Lions Young Ambassadors are very special young people each doing wonderful things in the community, but Abi is the first to reach the National Finals. All Shakespeare Lions were delighted when told the news and will be supporting her in the next very important round.” Abi will now go on to The Young Ambassador Finals weekend being held from the 21-23 February 2020 in Dudley where there is the chance to win a further bursary of £1,000.

Helping families since 1998, The Shakespeare Hospice is an award-winning hospice and the largest independent day hospice in the West Midlands, offering a diverse range of services to patients, and their families/ carers across South Warwickshire and the surrounding areas. Last year, The Shakespeare Hospice supported over 1,000 adults and young people from South Warwickshire and the North Cotswolds who accessed one or more of its’ specialised services, including the Day Hospice, Hospice at Home service, and pre and post bereavement support for families, young people and children. It also includes Transitional Care, a service for young people aged 16 to 24 years with a life-limiting conditions as they move from paediatric to adult services. Furthermore, there is support for young carers, and spiritual, emotional and complementary therapies.

7 cars you can finance for less than a weekly shop The average weekly shop is about £60, so what cars are available for less than £240 per month? To give some context to car finance deals we look at cars that are available for £240 per month, the monthly amount that figures suggest the average family spends on food and drink. Each of these deals is based on a personal contract hire (PCH) deal, where you pay an initial rental or deposit plus your monthly fee, which usually includes servicing. At the end of the agreement you return the car at no extra cost, assuming it’s in good condition and below the pre-agreed annual mileage limit. The prices here are just a guide, as monthly payments vary depending on the deposit amount. Volvo S90 £229.55 per month x 47 Initial rental: £2,065.95 Additional fees: £360 Mileage limit: 5,000p/a Total over 48 months: £13,214.80 The S90 is an ideal, fairly large, good-looking executive saloon that drives well and has a sophisticated road presence and excellent on-board technology. For low-mileage drivers, just over

34 connectionmags.co.uk

£13,000 across four years for a Volvo S90 is good value. Skoda Superb £212.31 per month x 35 Initial rental: £1,910.79 Additional fees: £298.80 Mileage limit: 8,000p/a Total over 36 months: £9,640.44 The Skoda Superb is a fantastic alternative to the Volvo as it’s almost £3,000 cheaper and has less restriction on distance travelled. It’s well-equipped, spacious and has a decent interior, making it perfectly practical for most families. DS 3 Crossback £134.79 per month x 17 Initial rental: £1,213.11 Additional fees: £99 Mileage limit: 5,000p/a Total over 18 months: £3,603.54 The DS 3 Crossback is a new crossover from the premium French brand, sporting quirky styling and efficient powertrains, but priced lower than rivals. Great deals are available, even paying just one month up front. The lower mileage limit is less of a concern because smaller car buyers usually travel lesser distances. Hyundai Ioniq Electric £237.03 per month x 23

/theconnectionmag

Initial rental: £1,422.18 Additional fees: £199 Mileage limit: 5,000p/a Total over 24 months: £7,072.87 This deal proves you can get a good, practical EV with a decent range at an affordable price. The up-front cost isn’t prohibitive, and it’s reasonably priced over the two years. When you factor in fuel savings, it makes a lot of sense. Honda Civic £171.45 per month x 47 Initial rental: £1,028.70 Additional fees: £360 Mileage limit: 5,000p/a Total over 48 months: £9,446.85 The Honda Civic is a greatto-drive small family car for those who don’t want full EV ownership. This price is for the 1.0-litre petrol, but performance is reasonable and it’s one of the best handling cars in this segment. Nissan Qashqai £181.55 per month x 47 Initial rental: £1,089.30 Mileage limit: 5,000p/a Total over 36 months: £9,622.15 The original crossover from Nissan is available with some enticing finance deals right now, with a respectable mileage limit and well-specified versions coming in below £200. Seat Ibiza £135.41 per month x 47 Initial payment: £1,218.69 Mileage limit: 8,000p/a Total over 48 months: £7,582.96 The popular Seat Ibiza supermini stands out, sporting Volkswagen Group build quality in a fun and stylish package. It’s an excellent alternative to the Fiesta. Offers correct at time of writing and are subject to change.

BACK OF THE NET The season is beginning to look a little better following three or four changes to the team over the last few weeks, although, after last season’s diaster, it could hardly be worse this time around. In fact, I’d been considering resigning as manager. I do understand that there’s a fair amount of luck involved with the game but when you’re as competitive as I am, losing at Fantasy Football can hurt. But getting back to the real game, aren’t West Brom doing well! I mentioned their prospects of winning the Championship in my previous column and they are still going strong at the top. Their February fixtures should see them consolidate that position and with a tough March on the horizon, they will need those points in the bag. I previously suggested that Birmingham would

do well to finish half way and it seems they may not even manage that. I think they will be safe but with a difficult couple of months ahead, they could be looking at teams below to help them. Meanwhile Coventry City, who play their home games at Blues’ St Andrews ground, have a real shout at promotion to the Championship. It really is good to see them heading back towards the top divisions again. It’s all done and dusted in the Premiership, isn’t it? Liverpool would have to suffer a major disaster to lose their lead and Man City should finish as runners-up. Wolves are pushing for a place in the top six, although Spurs and Arsenal could spoil that for them and Villa are floundering in the relegation zone. They’ve had bad luck with some big injuries but points need to be picked up from the end of January. Finally, I agree with Graham Souness that the offside law has to change for VAR to work efficiently. He said that if any part of a striker’s body is onside then that player should be considered onside and any goals given. Simple. Till next time...

Back of the net!

road would be considered by the majority as somewhere between ignorant and downright dangerous. And, as the number of vehicles on our roads increase, I can’t see this situation improving.

Easy Tips to Improve Your Driving This time we look at how to deal with those that are less attentive to their driving – by allowing for ‘challenged’ drivers. No one is a poor driver, at least not if you ask them. We all have our reasons for driving as we do but, judging by the numerous examples seen in dash-cam footage online, I think some drivers’ idea of what is acceptable on the

38 connectionmags.co.uk

Of course the majority of drivers are courteous and safe. It’s the maniacs we all want to stay away from. The lesson here is to keep a sharp eye out for them ahead and in your mirrors, and the golden rule is to maintain adequate space between you and them. Whether it’s better to be in front and getting away from them, or vice-versa so you can keep an eye on them and let them zoom off ahead will depend on the situation. Yes, it can be annoying that the space you have so carefully created is then taken up by another car, but just ease off and create a bit more space again. After all, the few seconds you will lose are nothing compared to the hours you will spend sorting an insurance claim out – or the eternity if something far worse should happen.

The worldwide phenomenon Downton Abbey becomes a grand motion picture event, as the beloved Crawleys and their intrepid staff prepare for the most important moment of their lives. A royal visit from the King and Queen of England will unleash scandal, romance and intrigue that will leave the future of Downton hanging in the balance. Written by series creator Julian Fellowes and starring the original cast.

Saturday 14th March, 7:30pm JUDY (PG12)

Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform in a sell-out run at The Talk of the Town. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians, and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Even her dreams of romance seem undimmed as she embarks on a courtship with Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. And yet Judy is fragile. After working for 45 of her 47 years, she is exhausted; haunted by memories of a childhood lost to Hollywood; gripped by a desire to be back home with her kids. Will she have the strength to go on?

Avignon Near the confluence of the Durance and the Rhône on its way to the Mediterranean, Avignon has long enjoyed a privileged location. In 1309, the Popes settled here for political reasons. They remained for almost 100 years, building the city walls and the imposing palace that dominates the skyline to this day. From the old Romanesque fortress to the new building in Gothic style, the ‘Palais des Papes’ is a dazzling display of limestone walls and turrets, guarded by the golden statue of Our Lady of the Doms atop the Mother Church. It’s a steady climb to the ‘Rochers des Doms’ above the palace but worth it for its shaded gardens and fabulous views over the city on one side and the river on the other. In Avignon, the Rhône splits to encircle the Barthelasse, one of the largest river islands in Europe. It is now a protected

46 connectionmags.co.uk

area – no new buildings are allowed – with recreational facilities and farmland rich in vegetables and fruit. There is a modern bridge but the free river shuttle ferries you across in minutes. You can stroll or cycle along the towpath, picnic under the trees, look out for beavers, herons or cormorants and gaze at the city across the water and the legendary Pont d’ Avignon, listed by UNESCO as part of the historic centre. The old bridge stops halfway across the river so dancing (as in the song) is not recommended but you can walk to the end past the chapel that once held the relics of St Bénezet, the shepherd inspired by divine voices to build the first bridge, later damaged by war and floods. Today the Rhône has been tamed, inviting visitors to relax on a leisurely cruise before returning to the bustling city.

There’s much to explore in town, from the old convents and churches to the museums, from the secluded squares to the popular Place de l’Horloge or the Place Pie with its vertical garden and covered market where a ‘cafetier’ will cook your own produce for lunch for the price of a drink. There are grand bourgeois houses west of the main street, hidden squares and cobbled lanes to the east, such as the picturesque dyers’ street, a favourite place to chill out during the world-famous Festival of Performing Arts held every summer. Meanwhile craft shops beckon with fragrant herbs and lavender products, while al fresco restaurants serve beef medallions and ratatouille with a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These illustrious vineyards are on the city’s doorstep, spreading luminous green below the vestiges of the Pope’s Summer Palace. Meanwhile the beautiful hills and villages of Luberon beckon just to the east, or one can head north to Orange, a pretty town with pastel-hued façades and balconies, a single nave cathedral, a Provençal market and two impressive Roman monuments. Both are world heritage sites, a 20 metre high Triumphal Arch with ornate sculptures and a Roman Theatre claiming one of the best preserved stage walls in the world. Solange Hando

DJing to raise funds for Bidford Youth Club

T

After 3 years of running a private fundraiser called ‘TOWIB’ (The Only Way Is Bidford, to those of you who may be unfamiliar with TV show, ‘TOWIE’), Max Deguara is opening the doors to the public for a special Ministry of Bidford night on Saturday 8th February, where attendees can expect to enjoy 4 hours of Ibiza classics, remixes, underground and house music.

“I used to be a DJ back home in Malta and worked in nightclubs in the 90’s. I kind of missed the fun of DJing and decided 3 years ago to organise a private Disco party and called it ‘TOWIB’ for my friends in Bidford. Everyone donated money to the Shakespeare Hospice and we all raised about £1000. It was an enjoyable night and fun had by all so we all decided to do it again a year later and raised about £1400 for the Shakespeare Hospice again! Last year we had a Beach Party in the Crawford Hall where we raised over £1000 for the Bidford Youth Club and around 120 people attended.”

Entry to this year’s event is by advance ticket purchase for a minimum £10 donation, and details of how to buy your ticket can be found on the “TOWIB4” Facebook event page. As last year’s donations helped them so much, proceeds will once again go to the fantastic volunteer-run charity, Bidford Youth Club.
