“But what about June?”, I hear some of you cry. And you’d be right to ask. Along with countless other local businesses, we’ve adapted to the delights of lockdown and pushed back our June/ July edition to now, but still keeping local business names out there with a free online edition for June (see our Facebook page for details). You may notice we’re lacking a few pages compared to normal. Well, this is a new normal for all of us. Our local community groups are unable to continue meeting. Pubs and other eateries 01527 503030 are unable to offer a dine-in experience at the time of print. 205831 Travel companies, hairdressers and beauty salons have all 01926 495321 suffered loss of business through closed doors too. But slowly, bit by bit, our wonderful shops and services are starting to re-open their doors, albeit ever so carefully. Please support them. Even if you’re unable to do so by buying from them, recommend those 999 or 112 you’ve used before. Share their social media posts. Do what you 444816 can to help the local economy. Some of our advertisers have their 08008 00151 own messages for you about how they are now operating. You 08004 04090 can read them in our feature on pages 32-33. 08001 11999 Many of you are desperate for a summer getaway (myself included!). In the absence of travel certainties, you can read up on camper vans (p.16 & 26), rustle up some Spanish sunshine 0300 555 8171 with our paella recipe (p.10) or live vicariously through some 01789 773239 travel-inspired books (p.42). 0844 855 2322 Perhaps if you’re actually quite enjoying your new way of life 07771 616189 and have exhausted garden centres of their usual offerings, why 01789 766750 not try building a pond? We’ve got a great rough guide in our 01789 762450 gardening article (p.18). Or you could try to wake up any sleepy, 01789 766200 furloughed brain cells with our puzzle page (p.43) and Sudoku 01789 270744 (p.6), or find out how to salvage your birds nest of a hairdo with 01386 871777 advice from local hairdresser, Sue Thorley (p.14). Plus there’s updates about local sport (p.34), children’s puzzles (p.22), the 262889 Alcester Town Council (p.36) and Bidford Parish Council (p.38-39) 07734 806 322 newsletters. So while this may be a slightly smaller magazine, we hope you’ll agree that it’s perfectly formed. And we very much look forward 762285 to welcoming back our wonderful customers who are braving a 762494 difficult storm at the moment. 762888 Keep on keeping on... the rainbow will come. 773201 762444 772200 488247 September/October Copy Deadline: 488211 Friday 14th August Facebook.com/theconnectionmag 762555 Twitter.com/connection_mag 772497 Connection circulation: 10,000 762578 Editor: Amy James Phone 01789 491005 Email: info@connectionmags.co.uk 772384 763060 763293 773372 111 08457 909090

Paella

Makes 4 Ready in 1 hour

Ingredients • 1 tbsp virgin olive oil • 225g chorizo, diced • 1 large onion, chopped • 275g paella rice • Few strands saffron • 1.1l fish or chicken stock • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 red pepper, deseeded and chopped • 100g frozen peas • 2 tsp paprika • 250g cooked peeled prawns, thawed if frozen • Few fresh mussels, scrubbed

10 connectionmags.co.uk

Enjoy the flavours of Spain with this classic rice dish. It makes a great one-pan supper served with crusty bread and a green salad.

Method 1. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chorizo to the pan and fry for 3-4 minutes. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. 2. Fry the onion in the pan juices for 5 minutes then stir in the rice and saffron and cook while stirring for 1 minute. Pour in the stock, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring frequently. 3. Return the chorizo sausage to the pan and add the pepper, peas, paprika and prawns. Simmer gently for a further 10 minutes until the rice is nearly tender and all the liquid has been absorbed, stirring occasionally. Top with the mussels and cover and cook for a further 4-5 minutes until the mussels open (discard any that do not open). Adjust the seasoning to taste then serve from the pan. TIP To make a vegetarian version omit the chorizo, prawns and mussels and replace with a selection of vegetables of your choice, such as celery, green beans, chopped tomatoes and courgette. Use vegetable stock and fry a couple of crushed garlic cloves with the onion to give extra flavour.

CHERRY TREES

BARCHESTER HEALTHCARE

It’s a new world for you, and a new world for us…

But all the same values apply! It has been an unpredictable time for all, in particular the care industry, those we care for and their families and loved ones. While working hard to keep our residents and staff safe, well and happy, the team at Cherry Trees has also taken this time to reflect, strengthen and improve our offering. We are happy to be welcoming so many new residents into the Cherry Trees community and we look forward to the day when we can throw our doors open again for some great events. In the meantime we will soon be able to welcome families to meet residents in our lovely gardens and escort safe show-rounds with strict protocols for the ones who need us now.

Our ‘new normal’

A fresh new team has been established at Cherry Trees with General Manager, Debbie Osborne taking the lead and working to instill the Barchester values throughout the home; Respect, Integrity, Passion, Empowerment and Responsibility. Our team are up-to-date with the latest research, policies and best practice, and committed to delivering a whole-home approach with the ‘one you love’ at its centre. All staff are focused on what residents can do, not what they can’t, promoting resident independence and wellbeing at all times. Debbie says “working in Cherry Trees is a privilege, not a job, and I always remember that our residents do not live in our workplace. We live in their home. There have been lows through this challenging time, but we have worked hard to protect our residents and feel privileged to have cared for them. Our team has grown in strength and we remain focused on providing the right care for each and every individual residing with us”. Cherry Trees is a residential, nursing and dementia-friendly care home on the outskirts of Alcester. We provide full and respite care. With a varied life enrichment program full of social events and activities, our home has its own minibus and once we are able to go out again we will be visiting local attractions, shops, gardens and parks. Our beautiful landscaped gardens have flourished under lockdown, with a big thank you to volunteer gardener Malcolm. We are one big family at Cherry Trees that believes when you join us you will become part of our extended family. A new world for your loved one can be a frightening thought, but just because it is new, doesn’t mean it can’t be exciting.

We promise it’s a new normal you’ll love! For further information or to book a viewing, please contact us direct: T. 01789 764022 or E. debbie.osborne@barchester.com Barchester Cherry Trees Care Home, Stratford Road, Oversley Green, Alcester, B49 6LN

“What a truly amazing place. My mom is a resident there. The care, dedication, love and respect they show me and my mom is priceless; and the support they offer me. Nothing is too much trouble; always there to help with my mom’s care and organizing getting her hair done, which my mom loves. I was truly blessed when we found Cherry Trees”. Lockdown Hair Survival Sue Thorley, owner of Alcester salon ‘Nasus Hair’, on how to make the most of your mane without your regular hair appointments.

W

e are all experiencing an extraordinary event in our lives. Everything that was “The Norm” is now dramatically different, and it’s anyone’s guess what we do next and in what order. We are not in control of anything – including our hair. For many of us, our hair is a barometer for how we are feeling. If our hair looks great, we feel great. But right now – it’s a mess! As we reach the third month of not being able to visit a salon, I’ve seen endless posts on Instagram and Facebook bemoaning re-growth, split ends and straggly manes. I get texts every day asking if I can do a sneaky socially-distanced haircut in the back garden (no!). There’s only one piece of advice I can give at the moment: LEAVE YOUR HAIR ALONE! Patience now will pay off until you can book back in with your favourite hair stylist. We are all busy preparing to bring you the best and safest service when the time is right. But in the meantime, I can give you a few expert tips to help you avoid the temptation to apply that home dye or attack your fringe with the kitchen scissors. This is the perfect time to give your hair a muchneeded holiday. It might be the first time you haven’t coloured it since you were still at school! This could be the time to grow out existing colour and embrace your natural hair, even if that’s grey. The beauty of doing it now is that no-one will see you or judge you – we’re all in the same boat. Have courage! And don’t be tempted to apply DIY colour. You’re not making it easy for anyone to correct it when the time comes. If you’re really desperate, use quick fix sprays on the roots and focus on the positive elements of your hair holiday. Instead, rehydrate your hair and give it a real pampering. You can do a home remedy treatment by

14 connectionmags.co.uk

identifying what you want to address: an oily, dry or flaky scalp, brittle ends or hair shedding. There are lots of gorgeous recipes online you can produce from ingredients you have at home: coconut oil, lavender oil, ginger oil, rose water, overripe bananas, avocados, vitamin E capsules, mayonnaise (YES MAYONNAISE!). These remedies are not only soothing and calming on the scalp, but the beautiful aroma of essential oils helps to lift the mood. Please note: you must not use essential oils neat, always mix with a carrier oil before application. I do a scalp treatment and a length and end treatment separately in a week as not one treatment fits all. If this seems too much effort, simply leave your conditioner in your towel-dried hair overnight. Now is also the perfect time to limit blow drying and the use of styling tools, which are incredibly damaging. Your hair will thank you and come back stronger and shinier. If you’re working from home and having to carry out video conferencing etc, why not experiment with hairbands, scarfs, hats and slides. There are so many gorgeous hair accessories available online at a reasonable price which can give you a boost. Have a look on Pinterest for inspiration – there are lots of lovely up-dos, or a slick-backed style is always a powerful look. Look on YouTube for braiding, plaiting, chignons and buns. Don’t panic - when the time is right we will be ready to help you achieve your post-lockdown look, whether you want to embrace that elegant grey, keep that extra length or go for a drastic chop. We’re all very excited about welcoming our clients and giving you back your crowning glory! Follow @nasushair on Facebook for re-opening updates.

A Summer Holiday On Four Wheels

Renting a camper van or motorhome for your summer break is a truly different experience to a holiday home stay. Clearly it’s much smaller, but the ‘Wendy house’ feel is a lot of fun and being able to visit a number of places without packing and unpacking every time is a joy. SMALL VW and small camper vans look cool and are easy to get around in. They are small inside though and don’t have toilet facilities. They work well in good weather and for a couple of nights, but much longer than that and you’ll be longing for a bit of social distancing! If that’s all your budget will stretch to and there are more than two of you, make sure you get an awning for extra storage and living space. MEDIUM A camper van is a van which has been converted to a living space. Being a van they have big doors at the side and back, meaning you can get more of a view and let the fresh air in. They are generally easy to drive and park and are ‘Tardislike’ inside – you won’t believe how much can be squeezed in. LARGE A motorhome is usually built on a van chassis, but the living space is purpose-built so it’s wider, taller and has more space for storage and facilities. On the downside, they only have a narrow single door in the living space so there’s more of a definition between inside and outside. CARAVAN Caravans are inexpensive because there’s no motor but of course you’ll need a tow bar on your car, which you might not be so keen to do if you are just trying the experience for the first time. Driving and manoeuvring them takes a bit of practice too. WHERE TO STAY During the day you can stop in many open car

16 connectionmags.co.uk

parks near beaches and in forested areas. Wild camping – where you just park up and stay overnight – isn’t encouraged even if you have your own toilet facilities. Rather you should aim for one of these options: The Caravan and Motorhome Club has an extensive network of club sites, see www.caravanclub.co.uk. The smaller Camping and Caravanning Club offers a good selection of sites. See www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk. Britstop (britstop.com) is a guide you have to buy (£31.60) and it lists stays at farm shops, country pubs, vineyards and many other interesting venues. However, many are likely to still be closed this summer. WHAT TO DO IN THE EVENING? As it’s likely to be a while before public venues are fully open, entertainment on your new holiday theme will resonate: • ‘Vanlifer’ Jenelle Eliana has built up a huge following on YouTube. She lives full-time in her van with a pet snake! • Book: How to Live in a Van and Travel. • Into the Wild is a moving film based on a true story of a young man who attempted to live independently in the wilds of Alaska. • Back on YouTube, watching van reviews and people doing self-build conversions may inspire you to make motorhoming a permanent fixture in your life.

Have a gently sloping beach at one edge to allow hedgehogs, birds and other non-aquatic creatures to drink and bathe, and get out easily if they fall in.

A pond is a great long-term addition to a garden but plan it before you start digging! Where to put a pond? Keep clear of deciduous trees; their leaves clog up the pond and cause methane gas to be released as they rot, which can be lethal to fish and pond wildlife. Conversely, extremely sunny, hot spots will increase the likelihood of pond algae problems.

Build in some ‘shelves’ at the sides, wide enough to hold pots or pond baskets to allow for aquatics and marginals (bog-loving plants) needing shallower water. A pond should be filled with rain water, but mains water can be used if allowed to stand for a week or so before adding plants or fish.

Choose a level site to minimise the amount of soil that needs to be shifted to create it. How to choose a liner There are three main types of pond liner: a pre-formed rigid liner (mid-price but shapes are limited); plastic available by the metre (cheap but may only last three or four years); and butyl (costly, but lasts around 30 years, and allows any size and shape you require). What shape? Create a simple shape to use less butyl liner and underlay, and make it easier to install. Always use underlay as this dramatically reduces the risk of leaks due to liner damage. Either buy it or use old carpet underlay for flexible liners, while plenty of sand works well for rigid liners. What size? A larger pond is generally easier to maintain and should be at least 45cm (18in) deep to minimise algae and to maximise the range of plants you can grow. Adjust the pond levels at the edges before laying edging material. Edges must fit snugly in the hole to reduce the chances of damage – pack dry sand or garden soil into any gaps. Large, rounded stones at the pond edge help animals to climb out and help disguise liner edges, plus reduce the amount of soil accidentally entering the pond.

What to plant? Buy healthy and hardy pond and marginal plants that are able to withstand winter temperatures. Check the depth of water they require and how big they’ll grow. Make it safe Make sure that you explain the potential dangers of ponds to children, and consider waiting a year or so if they are too small to understand. Avoid steep, straight sides and have a graduated exit so it’s easy to get out of should someone or something fall in. Consider fitting a strong galvanised metal mesh over the entire surface. It must be strong enough to bear a child’s weight, with a small mesh size that small feet cannot go through. A small fence around the pond can be clothed with climbers or painted, and can be removed once children are older.

those equipped with on-board water tanks, bathroom facilities and leisure batteries can even handle a few nights of ‘wild’ camping or rallying.

A self-build or commissioned camper van can offer more freedom and bespoke details than a factory unit. These are the best vans to base your design on. Camper vans are big business in the UK and it’s easy to understand their appeal. After all, once you’ve paid your initial investment, holidays become staggeringly cheap. Even staying on the most luxurious of campsites costs pennies compared with a night in a hotel room, while

The UK is awash with independent firms who specialise in converting vans into campers. Some mainstream manufacturers have got in on act game, too – just look at Volkswagen’s California. However, it’s also possible to homebuild your camper if you’ve got the time. Guides online are plentiful and easy to follow, and it can prove far cheaper than going for a third-party conversion. Plus, you’re able to specify the van to your liking. But before you start a conversion, you need a van – and these are our top five.

Fiat Ducato - The Ducato is a great choice for a motorhome conversion, and around two-thirds of motorhomes in Europe, whether coach-built or van conversion, are based on the Ducato. They are just the right size for most, offering enough headroom for an adult to stand without having too large a footprint. If you’re ordering directly from the factory, Fiat offers a specific motorhome base, with specialised tyres, a wider rear track, lower chassis and space to install water tanks. Volkswagen Transporter - The VW Camper was iconic once the rear-engined ‘splitties’ became an image of California surfer culture, and though the modern T6 is a totally different beast it still has that vibe nailed. It’s possible to buy your Transporter van in cool two-tone colour schemes or with retro alloy wheels. VW also offers a petrol engine – a rarity in this class. Ford Transit Custom - The Ford Transit has plenty going for it, and is the best-driving panel van you’ll ever find. A range of efficient diesel engines provide motive power, and few vans have such a car-like driving environment – there’s even a premium stereo and smartphone connectivity. Renault Trafic - When Renault updated the Trafic, it made sure that the interior dimensions were identical to the old model. This means that if you’re kitting out a brand-new Trafic – or its sister vans, the Fiat Talento, Nissan NV300 or Vauxhall Vivaro – you’ll be able to draw on eighteen years of camper fittings, diagrams and designs with which to fit your van out. Renault’s range of 1.6-litre diesel engines is superbly efficient, very smooth and decently powerful. Mercedes Sprinter - One of the safest vans on offer thanks to high-tech safety gear, this big brute comes in a variety of wheelbase and roof height variations so you can get the camper size you desire. It has the most premium cabin on the market, with controls and displays from Mercedes’ passenger car range. And there’s a three-pointed star on the bonnet. What could be better?

NEIGHBOURHOOD N EIGHBOURHOOD WATCH WATCH A ALCESTER LCESTER It is wonderful to report that many types of Crime in the UK have fallen sharply since the start of the Covid-19 lockdown and that many examples of Good Neighbourliness have risen. Government Measures to stay at home have led to a surge in good neighbourliness as people look out for the vulnerable and talk to those next door more than ever before, according to a new study. Almost three quarters (72%) of UK adults can now identify which of their neighbours are vulnerable. Neighbourhood Watch believes that building strong communities where neighbours look out for each other is key and it’s good to be reminded of the ordinary people who make our nation great, even in the most trying of times. The kind, everyday deeds of neighbours help create safe, secure and happy neighbourhoods where people, families and communities thrive and it’s times like these that communities need to stick together and look out for one another.

Scam - This details a scam that is circulating at the moment: The caller is purportedly from the NHS Track and Trace Service who says that you’re likely to have been in touch with someone with Covid-19 and need to isolate for 7 days and take a Covid test. S/he will not say who you’re supposed to have been in contact with because of “confidentiality”. You are told that you must give him/her your address so that a test kit can be mailed to you and informs you that there is a £50 charge. S/he then asks for your card number. The caller goes on to say that this is not a free service and there are penalties for not complying. Please remember that there is no charge for NHS tests. Always remember if it feels wrong it probably is wrong. Should you have problems during these troubled times there are always people out there who will provide help. Do ask. Small, local, independent businesses have been hailed by many as the saviours of the lockdown period, with many smaller grocery stores having stocks of toilet rolls and other stockpiled items when the larger national stores ran out. Now, as more and more shops and services re-open with the easing of lockdown, it’s more important than ever to continue supporting our wonderful local businesses to bolster our local economy. Here’s how some of The Connection’s brilliant customers can help you with safe shopping and services. Warner’s Budgens, Bidford on Avon Warner’s Budgens are changing ownership in July, joining the Co-operative Midcounties group. Before doing so, they want to say an enormous “thank you” to the dedicated community volunteers who have worked alongside their own fantastic in-store staff to deliver shopping to vulnerable at-risk or isolating households since March. Hillers Farm Shop This fabulous local farm shop has been open throughout the entire lockdown period. They’ve adapted amazingly to the situation, building fencing for their speedily-implemented call & collect service, erecting till screens, and facilitating stress-free shopping with a restricted number of customers, freshly sanitised trolleys and hand sanitiser also available on entry. Socially distanced grocery shopping at its best! And now that their beautiful gardens and gift shop have reopened, locals are able to enjoy a far lovelier “new normal”.

1 Car Company, Alcester Kirsty and Mark have reopened their professional and friendly car sales site for business with an appointment-only system. Customers are asked to use hand sanitiser and keep to social distancing measures on site, something which the team are also sticking to rigidly for your safety. All vehicles are scrupulously sanitised and vehicle information packs are distributed on a one-per-customer basis, so there’s no repeat handling between car viewings. There are perspex screens in the office and a new awning on site too so that discussions with customers can be kept in the open air as far as possible. And for anyone needing to shield or selfisolate, Kirsty can provide you with a walk-around video of your vehicle of choice before delivering your purchase free of charge to your local address. Bonners Jewellers, Alcester If you’ve missed having a smiley chat with the lovely team at Bonners, you’ll be delighted to know that they reopened in mid-June. The usual government-

/theconnectionmag

@connection_mag

mandated hand sanitising and distancing measures are in place, meaning that only 1 person (or a small number of people from one home) can enter the shop at a time. Sarah is thrilled to see her regular customers again even if she’s not able to have as long a natter as usual because of queuing outside the store! Contemporary Coverings, Alcester Andy and Amanda’s store has re-opened with a fantastic 20% discount offer on all floorings (exclusions and T&C’s apply). They’ve remained productive and busy throughout lockdown and are raring to go to fit beautiful flooring for anyone who’s recently had “socially distanced” quotes. Green Thumb Mark and his team have continued working throughout lockdown to keep local lawns looking lush. The hot weather has certainly provided more of a challenge to green gardens than the pandemic, according to Mark. Thankfully, working in gardens, it’s pretty easy to keep to social distancing rules! Hugh Duck, Plumber Hugh would like to thank all of his customers for their patience during this difficult time & understanding when he had to prioritise emergencies. He will soon be in touch with his customers to catchup & be giving the same reliable service served up with a good dose of humour, and reassures everyone that he’ll be observing distancing & PPE guidelines, so may ask you to keep your distance. “Stay safe all & hope you will be able to make me a cup of tea soon!” Hopkins Pharmacy, Alcester As you can imagine, Mick and his team have been incredibly busy since March. They would like to send a heartfelt thank you to every customer and wellwisher through this challenging time. They’ve been overwhelmed with the kindness of the community, who have provided them with PPE including masks and lots of very lovely chocolate. Jacksons Jewellers, Alcester The shop has reopened for business in normal working hours. Visitors will be welcomed with hand sanitiser and new social distancing measures as well as a lovely new perspex screen for customer & staff safety. AGS Gas, Alcester AGS Gas have remained open as far as possible for emergency call outs over the lockdown period. You can be assured that all of their engineers are adhering to social distancing and wearing the appropriate PPE to protect themselves

and their customers. They’re also ensuring that boilers and controls are sanitised before leaving site. As a thank you for their hard work, AGS have donated £250 to the Alcester Community Resilience Group to help feed vulnerable local residents. They’ve also made a donation of a rather splendid silver-painted rock to the fantastic Positivity Line at Alcester’s nature reserve! Nicola McGinn Skincare, Binton Over lockdown, the delightful, doors of this delightf ul, rural treatment room have had to close, but it’s provided a time of growth and new challenges. Nicola has been able to undergo additional training in skincare, updating her on new techniques, both in facials & massage, so she is be able to provide new treatments for her clients. She has also completed new hygiene courses and adapted her room to provide a completely safe environment for herself and her clients. Nicola is also a Pilates instructor, so has been kept busy with virtual classes during the past few months. Along with picturesque walks around the local villages and lots of gardening time, she’s managed to stay fit, flexible and sane… particularly important when juggling work with home schooling too! “When we get back to our new normal, I look forward to welcoming you to my private, peaceful treatment room. If in the meantime you would like any information on the treatments I offer or just to chat about any skin condition you are suffering with in lockdown please send me a message and I can do a personal skin consultation for you.” Richard Fantom, Bidford on Avon After originally expecting to be able to open in July, suddenly advice changed. Richard rose to the challenge, implementing lots of necessary changes to his practice so that he could reopen safely on 9th June. The consulting room has been reorganised extensively and there’s some changes in the reception area too. It’s more practical for these times with easy clean surfaces, so his clients (who are kindly asked to wear masks to appointments) can rest easy in the knowledge that Richard has prioritised their safety. Grinnall Carpets, Honeybourne The showroom is open by appointment only with fitting and measures during normal hours. All necessary safety measures are in place. The friendly Grinnall team look forward to your call on 01386 841899 for bookings!

State of Play

How has lockdown impacted our local sports? by Rich James

T

hree months locked down and how has that impacted local sports? Not well to be honest, but then what can anyone expect as we rally to battle a global pandemic. Sport offers sanctuary, release and exercise, three things everyone is in need of after almost twelve weeks sometimes being limited to just an hour a day spent exploring all of the local footpaths and trails. Exercise has been back in play (pardon the pun) since mid-May, so the local golf courses and tennis clubs have seen a return to action. All strictly managed, socially distanced and positioned as a 1 v 1 process. However, team sport has taken a hit, the Government line being that no organised team sport can take place, so the timings of the lockdown have had a knock-on impact to local football, rugby and cricket. Football was the first to fall, with the FA moving quickly and suspending all grassroots football from mid-March. The suspension wasn’t lifted and by the end of the month all local leagues were cancelled with results being declared null and void. This was the most sensible solution, but you have to feel for the likes of Bidford Juniors U14s who had won their league title in March with games in hand, only to be told that six months of effort was all for naught and there was no league winner. The scheduled return of the Premier League this week (it’s mid-June as I write) will begin to whet the appetites of the many millions of football fans and the thousands locally who play the sport. It’s great for the fans, but this return is financially driven and will merely drive home the difference between the hermetically sealed, Covid-tested professional bubble and the less manageable, local level parks game. Cricket has been hit harder. Sport being taken off the table in March led to the suspension of all cricket, recreational and professional. A season due to start in April was put on hold, clubhouses and bars were closed down and placed off-limits, incomes were curtailed and a summer of uncertainty began. Despite

34 connectionmags.co.uk

no cricket being played, clubs have ongoing costs to pay and nearly all revenue is obtained either from player subs and membership or from bar take; none of which have been available. Instead, clubs have been forced to seek grant payments from bodies such as Sport England and the ECB (English Cricket Board) to cover running costs and avoid financial problems. As with football, there is some positive news on the horizon in terms of the professional game, with England due to commence test cricket in July. As with football, the whole process is being micro-managed with the squads being isolated, training in small pods and tested. Financially driven once more. The ECB need the broadcast revenues to cover the costs of zero attendances and the decision to postpone their new headline competition, The Hundred. So, how does sport return? Cricket is in the spotlight currently. Time is counting down, both distancing restrictions and numbers at gatherings are not currently conducive to 11 a side sport (or 15 a side in the case of rugby). There remains hope that the ban on sport may be lifted before the end of the summer. The ECB have plans but it looks as though competitive league cricket may be lost for the year. At the very least, all cricketers would welcome the chance to get out on the field and to take advantage of the wonderful weather. Football and rugby may prove more problematic contact sports in a world where contact is prohibited! Pre-season training has begun but there is huge uncertainty concerning when restrictions may be lifted to a sufficient level to allow any level of competition to take place. In these difficult times, restraint and patience are called for. It’s a tough position for anyone who plays and participates in sport locally, but ultimately the needs of the greater good must take precedent here. The governing bodies are working in the background to ensure that when the gates are open everyone is able to get back onto the pitches in a safe manner.

Bidford on Avon Parish Council in the County of Warwickshire

USE/TRADE OF ILLEGAL/HARMFUL SUBSTANCES The Parish Council has been made aware of the use and trade of illegal and/or harmful substances in the village. This is taking place in some of the public open spaces, such as The Dugdale Avenue Sports Fields as well as in the numerous footpaths that interconnect the village. And it is not just our local youth but visitors from other villages and towns. Council are keen to stamp this out and would ask you, the local community, to help in this by contacting the Police whenever you witness either the use of harmful substances or its trade. You can call them on 101, giving full details and be sure to get a Crime Ref. Number. Or you can report the event by email at cms.warwickshire.police.uk/article/6395/ Do-you-wish-to-report-a-crime-that-youhave-witnessed: in this case be sure to make a note of the date and time the report was made. It is important to work with the police and by reporting every event, giving the date, time and place it will assist them to draw a picture of what is happening in Bidford which will enable them to act when appropriate. This has worked successfully in the past, so rest assured your reporting will not be in vain. BIG MEADOW Covid 19 has made the opening of the Big Meadow a very difficult issue. Of paramount importance to the Parish Council was its duty of care to its staff as well as the safety of the local community. Mindful of Government guidelines issued at the end of March, Council decided to maintain the Big Meadow open but only for pedestrian access – this was following the flouting of the guidelines by visitors from the West Midlands arriving in buses/mini buses. As lockdown starting easing up and visitors, started to arrive and park illegally along Honeybourne Road, Councillors considered how it could reopen the Big Meadow safely. After many hours of discussion with other agencies and looking at the guidelines, it agreed to make the adjacent field of Monie Meadow available for parking. This facility, off Honeybourne Road 75 yds to the south of the entrance to the Big Meadow, has limited parking (120/150 vehicles) which allowed

38 connectionmags.co.uk

it to be opened without having to monitor it and allowing for contactless parking. The other concern was the toilets, although there is no obligation to make toilets available, it was considered too high a risk to open the Big Meadow to visitors without offering a toilet facility albeit a limited one due to social distancing. Council will continue to monitor the situation and review its policies to comply with any further easing of lockdown guidelines but always conscious of its duties and responsibilities to its staff and community. You can follow what policies are in place for the Big Meadow online at www. bidfordonavon-pc.gov.uk/bigmeadow.htm. COVID 19 What can one say apart from how it has changed our life in the last 12 weeks (I am writing this on 10th June). As with everything, there have been positives and negatives but I like to dwell on the positives. The Parish Council agreed to set up and support a delivery service as early as 22nd March, in partnership with Warners Budgens, and since then it has delivered around 1,500 parcels, all due to the magnificent response of local residents offering to volunteer to take orders, “pick and pack” as well as delivering. Others have volunteered to deliver prescriptions, another essential service during this time. We all owe them a debt of gratitude for their care, dedication and selflessness. MEETINGS – please note that, until further notice, all Parish Council meetings will be via Zoom. Details of how to join the meetings are publicised on the Agenda and via social media. Monday 13th July and 10th August, 7.30 pm Planning Consultative Committee Meeting. Monday 27th July and 24th August, 7.30 pm Parish Council Meeting. community events & what’s on...

To publicise any community events, email info@connectionmags.co.uk by 10th of August. Because of the current covid-19 situation, local groups are unable to meet, so we are including what we can, with web addresses where we have them.

Local WI Groups

We had a lovely email from Margaret at Alcester WI with the following, which I would suggest applies to all the WI and ladies groups: The committee hopes that all our members are well and receiving the regular emails with news of everyone and their various activities. Do let us have anything you think would be of interest: books, walks, recipes and humorous stories would all be welcome. We will keep in touch and let you know as soon as we can meet again.

Wednesday 1st July is the start of the new Rotary year President for the past two years, Vaughan Blake, will hand over to Kay Blake. Probably by Zoom this year, not in our usual venue of Kings Court! We managed to hold our Bidford & Alcester BIG Breakfasts before lockdown & here Vaughan is handing a cheque to Claire Whatley director of GAGA, who support us at the Bidford Breakfast. Normally our charity breakfasts herald the the start of much Spring & Summer fundraising by the club, which had it’s 10th birthday in May. This year has been a little different, & we hope to be back with our charity breakfasts in October.

Our usual events - Pimms Stands, Youth Speaks, Kids Out etc., have not been possible this year. However members have been supporting the community by collecting & delivering shopping, medicine etc., manning the Alcester Resilience phone lines & making face masks from pillowcases. Stay Safe & we look forward to seeing you soon. Our friendly & informal meetings will resume on Thursday mornings for breakfast at Kings Court Hotel, Alcester as soon as it is safe to do so. If you’d like more information please email - alcesterbidfordrotary@gmail.com

Whether you want to live vicariously or plan your 2021 holiday, add these travel-inspired books to your wish-list… The Beach – Alex Garland The Beach tells the tale of backpacker Richard, who sets out to find a fabled Thai island. What he finds at first seems like a slice of paradise, but as he soon discovers, the community who call the island home will stop at nothing to protect their secret. This is not a light-hearted holiday read, but its characters, story line and plot turns will stay with you for a long time.

Lonely Planet’s Where To Go When – Sarah Baxter and Paul Bloomingfield If you’re looking ahead to 2021, but can’t decide where to head to on holiday, this comprehensive guide to 360 destinations might help. It lists some of the best places to travel to for every month of the year.

National Geographic’s Journeys of a Lifetime – various writers From epic train journeys to boat trips, cycle tours, hiking trails and adrenalinepacked adventures, this book has them all. It’s packed with stunning images of far-flung destinations, commentary from National Geographic’s travel writers, and maps, practical advice, insider tips and much more.

Microadventures: Local Discoveries, Great Escapes – Alastair Humphreys If, like many of us, your finances are looking rather lean at the moment, why not plan a microadventure? As the writer explains, a microadventure is “close to home, cheap, simple, short and 100% guaranteed to refresh your life.” You’ll find plenty of inspiration in this book, from easy day outs to more challenging trips that will push you out of your comfort zone.

The Summer Villa – Melissa Hill Looking for a feel-good story about friendship, romance and following your dreams? You’ve found it. Kim, Colette and Annie reunite several years after they first met on holiday. They’re together to celebrate Kim’s achievement at transforming the crumbling Italian villa where they first met. But as the story unfolds, it’s clear that all of the women are hiding secrets that could change everything.

Ainsley’s Mediterranean Cookbook – Ainsley Harriott Bring a taste of the Mediterranean to your own home with Ainsley Harriott’s latest cookery book. The companion to his recent ITV series, it includes a wide range of recipes from Spain, Sardinia, Morocco, Corsica and Jordan. You could soon be enjoying aromatic fish pilaf; courgette, lemon and pecorino spaghetti; garlic and chilli prawns; or Middle-Eastern spiced beef pitta pockets.
