And so, the summer is upon us. A very different one for the majority of us, with foreign holidays perhaps on the back burner and closer-to-home adventures on the horizon instead. I recently took my children camping at Ragley Hall and was reminded just how wonderful it can be to get outdoors and back to basics. Of course, there wasn’t a huge amount of sleep to be had at times, and a thin veil of canvas doesnt soundproof sibling squabbles, but on the whole it was lovely. If you’d like tips on how to enjoy ‘Camping with Kids’, turn to page 14 for our lowdown. 01527 503030 Although the final lockdown easing date has been upset 01789 205831 somewhat by the latest COVID variant, it has been great to see 01926 495321 things returning to some semblance of normality. Local groups are beginning to meet again (p.40), Alcester Civic Society are looking for new members (p.12) and there’s entertainment to be had at fundraisers (p.12) and the RSC (p.8). Plus Alcester Roman 999 or 112 01789 444816 Museum have collaborated with Live & Local’s LivingRoom project, to produce a fascinating film you can read more about on 08008 00151 page 46. 08004 04090 08001 11999 The highlight of my summer so far has been the return to cricket. That’s something I never thought I’d say in my early years as a cricket widow, but it’s been great to enjoy socially distanced 0300 555 8171 picnics and cold cider at the local grounds with other families. 01789 773239 And even better to see the next generation of cricketers training 0844 855 2322 at the ECB Dynamo’s and All Stars sessions. Well done to the 07771 616189 clubs putting in the effort to provide these facilities to local youngsters. You can read an update on the local leagues in ‘View 01789 766750 from the boundary’ on page 28. 01789 762450 01789 766200 You’ll find all the usual articles that you’ve come to know and love 01789 270744 in this edition... a lovely smoked trout salad recipe (p.10), water 01386 871777 conservation tips for gardeners (p.18 & 20), children’s puzzles (p.22), convertible cars (p.26) and British holiday ideas (p.32). It’s 01789 262889 also that time of year when those entering higher education can make the most of local grants (p.33) - money for nothing! Live performances at the Royal Shakespeare Company are back.

The Comedy of Errors runs between 13 July – 26 September in the Lydia & Manfred Gorvy Garden Theatre in Stratford-uponAvon. This specially constructed outdoor performance space is located in the Swan Theatre Gardens, flanked by the River Avon and overlooked by the Swan Theatre. The production, directed by Phillip Breen, was due to be part of the RSC’s 2020 season, but was postponed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic Director. One of Shakespeare’s earliest and arguably funniest plays, The Comedy of Errors will now be reconceived for outdoor performances. Phillip’s previous RSC directorial credits include The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Provoked Wife and The Hypocrite. The 17-strong cast includes Jonathan Broadbent

and Greg Haiste as, respectively, Dromio of Syracuse and Dromio of Ephesus, whilst Guy Lewis and Rowan Polonski play Antipholus of Syracuse and Antipholus of Ephesus. As Stratford-upon-Avon re-opens its doors to visitors and residents, the RSC will also be celebrating the arrival of Summer with a series of free events, interactive workshops and outdoor performances for families. These events will run for four weeks between Tuesday 27 July – Friday 20 August on the Bancroft Terrace and across the Garden Theatre. Visitors can brush up on their stand-up with a programme of fun, interactive sessions inspired by comedy and clowning, attend free musical performances and making-workshops led by RSC Costume Practitioners, and on Friday 20 August, celebrate the RSC’s costume making heritage with a Costume Day, featuring a series of free familyfriendly activities taking place across the town. Alcester A Civic Society

he destructive period of the 1960s saw the demolition of many beautiful, ancient buildings. Alcester was fortunate to lose fewer than many places, but when discussions were underway to demolish buildings in Gas House Lane and Malt Mill Lane, a group of determined and concerned residents formed the ‘Alcester Civic Society’, successfully saving much of this area, which was sympathetically restored and redeveloped to become an award winning scheme, providing town centre homes. The Society has since flourished and for over 50 years has scrutinised and, when necessary, has commented on planning applications submitted to the local authority to try to ensure that development is appropriate and carried out sympathetically and in keeping with the character of the Town to prevent any repetition of past mistakes. The Society arranges an interesting programme of talks and also arranges visits to places of

interest throughout the year. We provide an excellent way to meet new friends, to find out what is going on in the Town, and to help influence others in keeping Alcester the special place it is. An annual subscription of £8.00 per couple or £5 per single member helps to cover administration costs. New members are always welcome. Top tips to making sleeping under the stars a whole lot more enjoyable… Fly the ag If, like me, you have the navigation skills of Nemo’s best friend Dory, you may nd yourself getting lost occasionally. A telescopic ag pole and windsock is a useful marker, particularly if you’re planning to give the kids a bit more freedom. To wee or not to wee No one enjoys a 3am trek to the loo, so a portable toilet is your friend. A potty is ne for younger children, but you’ll need something a bit more substantial for older kids (and adults). If you have room, a bucket style loo is ideal. Otherwise, try a collapsible toilet. We recently bought the Bivvy Loo, which folds down small, supports up to 23 stone and comes with biodegradable bags and powder to transform liquid to gel. Let there be light You’ll need headtorches to nd your way around after dark. A rechargeable camping lantern is also useful for evenings (and those 3am toilet breaks). And a string of solar fairy lights around your door will help you to identify your tent at night. (They also look rather pretty.)

huddled up sheltering from the rain. Speaking of rain, it can be difcult to get dry in a tent, so waterproofs are a good idea. Eat, drink and be merry A camping stove is essential for anything longer than a weekend break, even if you’re planning to mainly barbecue or eat out. Stick to easy-tocook meals, from breakfast fry-ups to fajitas. Don’t have an electric hook up? A cool box with ice blocks makes a useful fridge. You’ll need to refreeze the blocks each day, which you can usually do in the site shop. My kids love ‘camping cereal’ (aka mini variety packs). Pour the milk directly into the cereal bag. No bowl = less washing up. Ideally, start collecting condiment sachets a few weeks before your holiday, so you have plenty of ketchup, mayonnaise, vinegar etc. to see you through. And what camping trip would be complete without toasting marshmallows?

A decent night’s sleep If you’re only planning to camp occasionally, air beds are usually ne. However, they do tend to deate somewhat overnight and don’t exactly have the longest lifespan. While camping beds are more expensive, they can work out far better value in the long run. And you’re likely to get a much better night’s sleep. Dress for the occasion Even the hottest British summer’s day can turn cool at night. Close-tting PJs (or leggings and a T-shirt) will help to keep the warmth in. Make sure you pack plenty of layers. You’ll appreciate a eecy jumper when you’re

Other essentials worth packing include: • Washing line – string it between your tent and a tree to dry swimming costumes on • Baby wipes – handy no matter how old the kids are • Dustpan and brush • Doormat • First aid kit • Extra-thick thermal socks (Heat Holders are ideal) • Gaffer tape for tackling leaks • Travel games, a ball and a frisbee

LIQUID GOLD Water conservation and management in the garden

As you swivel the magic turnkey that releases a gushing stream of clean and sparkling water into your can, pause for a moment. Marvel at the luck of the draw that nds us living in a part of the world where water is available for us to use and to misuse. The water that you pour into summer hanging baskets and sprinkle liberally on your beds and borders was once excreted by huge reptiles. Your café latte contains dinosaur pee. Indeed, water on Planet Earth has been here for almost ve billion years and the total amount is just about the same as ever. It represents the ultimate success story in terms of recycling. So, what’s the problem – we’re all familiar with the water cycle, right? A massive 97.5 per cent of water contains salt. So that means that only 2.5 per cent of Earth’s water is suitable for our use – and the majority of that is frozen and therefore unavailable. It’s hugely expensive and difcult to extract fresh water from the sea. It can take thousands of years for some parts of the water cycle to complete, such as the replenishment of underground aquifers. The warming planet Climate change is causing a warmer atmosphere. This holds more moisture and means that some areas will be wetter, whilst the dry regions will continue to get drier. We either have too much water or too little; Goldilocks would rarely judge things to be ‘just right’. We all need to do our bit, so what ‘bit’ is best in a garden? Firstly, let’s understand some of the consequences of what can happen when we interfere with the precious surface of the earth, both with and without a capital letter: • We cover it in impermeable material so that water falling on this will act in an unpredictable and sometimes dangerous way. Water moves into rivers far more quickly when there are fewer surfaces to soak it up en route. • We send water cascading into drainage pipes that can so easily be overwhelmed, eventually causing ooding.

18 connectionmags.co.uk

• We conne rivers and drain ood plains so that water channels are no longer big enough during times of excess rainfall. • We cut down trees and remove vegetation, reducing the absorption potential of plants and destabilising soil that had previously been held in place by roots. Land surfaces can easily capsize and slip away when the anchors have been removed. How can gardeners help? • It’s a win-win situation. Creating space for water within a garden can be life-enhancing. Aim to slow rainfall down – allow some of it to be absorbed in vegetation, then catch and retain some more. Provide a pond that collects water run-off, then enjoy watching the biodiverse-rich habitats that develop. Surround your pond with plants that can cope with ooding and drought. They will help to absorb some of the excess during times-aplenty, but they won’t die of heat exhaustion during a prolonged dry spell. Some examples are: Acanthus, Asters, Astilbe, Brunnera, Carex, Cornus, Eupatorium, Hemerocallis, Iris, Kniphoa, Miscanthus, Monarda, Persicaria, Rudbeckia, Sanguisorba, Scabious and many more. Experimentation is all part of your gardening fun. • In places that require hard materials, choose porous options through which the rain can drain.

• Divert your downpipes into water butts – these can be surprisingly beautiful if you shop around. It means you capture some of the rainwater for use when you need it the most. • Choose drought-tolerant planting for the driest parts of your garden. These plants will generally have silvery-coloured leaves or foliage that is covered in ne hair, which cuts down on evaporation through the leaf pores. Once established, they should survive the hottest, driest weather that they are ever likely to get, without needing to be watered. Surround them with gravel, pebbles or boulders as this will conserve what little moisture there is in the soil, plus it looks great too. • Use plants to help your plants. One species can prop up another and provide shade if they are planted close together. Avoid bare patches of soil that will dry out in hot weather. • Consider adding structural reinforcement to your shed roof so that you can add plants. It’s such a great look and captures water as it falls. Sedums and wildowers will give you butteries and bees all spring and summer long.

With road trips on the cards this summer, what drop-tops should be on your shopping list? Though restrictions may remain in place, there’s hope that the pandemic might begin to ease in the coming months, with greater freedoms on the cards to enjoy the – hopefully – wonderful summer weather. And though question marks may remain over foreign travel, British roads trips will hopefully be allowed. One of the best ways to enjoy such trips is with a convertible, allowing you that open-air freedom to explore. Here are eight fantastic options for all budgets.

Up to £5,000 – Volvo C70

Though better known for its estate cars and SUVs, Volvo has sold convertibles in the past, the result being the C70. So while this modest budget may allow access to a range of convertibles, the Volvo wins thanks to its mix of comfort, style and practicality.

Up to £15,000 – BMW M3

There is no shortage of options in the used market for a convertible for less than £15,000. The BMW M3 Convertible is our pick for performance, comfort, sporty thrills and dramatic styling. This budget will get you a tidy E45 generation from the early 2000s.

Up to £25,000 – Mazda MX-5

£25,000 could get you a brand new drop-top. Though options are still limited, our choice would be the truly brilliant Mazda MX-5, which in entry-level form and with the peppy 1.5-litre petrol engine just ts this budget. Though Mazda does offer more powerful MX-5s, many reckon the less powerful option is the sweet spot in this roadster’s range.

Up to £40,000 – Audi TT Roadster

£40,000 provides access to more upmarket new convertibles, including the excellent Audi TT Roadster that perfectly combines quality with fun. Coming in at £38,530, you can even afford to upgrade to the mid-spec Sport Edition version, with larger 19-inch alloy wheels and a black styling pack.

Up to £50,000 – Porsche 718 Boxster

Porsche’s 718 Boxster is a convertible that’s as sharp to drive as a model with a xed roof. Though the ‘entry-level’ Porsche, this roadster is a truly brilliant sports car in its own right, offering a fabulous drive, strong performance and sleek and stylish looks.

Up to £100,000 – Porsche 911 Cabriolet

A budget this large can get you behind the wheel of a drop-top version of Porsche’s most iconic model – the 911. Though it’s all too easy to push the 911’s price into six digits, £100,000 can get you a Carrera or four-wheel-drive Carrera 4 version, which you can happily use every day rather than just saving it for the occasional weekend in summer.

Over £100,000 – Bentley Continental GT

There really isn’t any ner luxurious convertible than the Bentley Continental GT – a car for those with seemingly unlimited funds to splash out. Though it’s not as sporty as other drop-top supercars that this budget can get you, the Bentley’s focus on ultimate quality and comfort truly puts it into a league of its own. The price is a rather sizable £173,000, and that’s before you’ve even thought about options.

View from the boundary by Rich James

W

hen the start of the summer of 2020 saw record temperatures, blazing hot days and a nationwide lockdown preventing us from taking to the cricket field, I think the cynic in all of us cricketers knew what was to come. We’re now thankfully through the wettest May on record and the already truncated 2021 cricket season is well underway, and doesn’t it feel good to be back in action! Seriously though, the rain in May was unprecedented. Having asked some of the ‘old dogs’ of the local cricket scene, no-one can remember ever seeing three consecutive weeks of league cricket action fall victim to the rain. Some sides braved the elements and played in between the showers, but between the 8th and the 29th of May the Cotswold Hills League saw just eleven out of a scheduled 111 games played. Fingers crossed, the sun carries on shining until August is in the rear view mirror. Internationally, fans returned to the stadiums for England’s first two test matches of the season. Unfortunately, an England side, weakened by player rotation due to injury and ‘bubble fatigue’ (the effects of players moving from isolation to isolation as they travelled the world), were beaten by a strong New Zealand side in our first home series defeat since 2014. Having been part of the 18,500 strong crowd at Edgbaston for the second test, it was encouraging to see a semblance of normality return. Again...fingers crossed. On the village cricket scene it is great to see

28 connectionmags.co.uk

our local clubs thriving; we’re almost half way through the league programme and several local sides are in the hunt for silverware. In the CHL Premier Division, Exhall & Wixford are in a transitional period, yet are just one win away from the summit in a wide open competition. In Division One, Alcester & Ragley are top of the table, as are Temple Grafton in Division Two. Division Three sees both Bidford on Avon and Great Alne first and second in the table, much as they finished a season-long battle in 2019 when both clubs were promoted. In Division Four, Welford on Avon and Alcester’s second eleven are sitting in a mid table position. Finally, down in Division Seven, the top two spots are currently occupied by Bidford 2nds and just one point behind are Temple Grafton 2nds, both teams in their first seasons in the league. Exhall 2nd XI are currently bottom of Division Seven, but are stronger than their position suggests. Over in the Worcester League, Harvington are currently third in Division Eight (South) whilst Cookhill are struggling towards the bottom of Division Eight (East). There is plenty of cricket to be played before the end of the season however, and by the time the September edition of the Connection comes out we’ll know who has come out on top. Best of luck to everyone involved for the coming weeks!

Ensure all your windows and doors are locked when you go out and when go to bed – do not forget burglars can get through small windows. Do not leave windows and doors on the ground floor open when you are elsewhere in the house – it only takes a burglar a few seconds to get in and out. Keep valuable items including car keys away from open windows. Do not leave car keys on display in the house – put them in a drawer. Set your alarm when you are out and when you go to bed. Reports of attempted scams surge. An estimated 36 million adults have been targeted by scammers since January according to Citizens Advice.

While over 55s are more likely to be scammed, those under 34 are nearly 5 times more likely to fall victim to a scam targeted by text or messaging service. Over 55s are more likely to be targeted over the phone. Research shows that when it comes to scams anyone one can be targeted, and anyone can be tricked. Whether you’re looking for a secluded escape or an adrenaline-fuelled adventure, reconnect with Mother Nature at one of the UK’s most enchanting forests. If there’s one thing the UK has no shortage of, it’s unspoilt woodland. Our forests are brimming with beauty and wildlife, making them perfect for nature watching, walking and mountain biking – or for just nding some peace and quiet. With so much of our country carpeted in thick woodland, you’ll be spoilt for choice on where to go. To get your imagination ticking, here are just three of the UK’s most impressive forests – and what to do while you’re there. The New Forest, Hampshire With historical roots reaching as far back as 1079, the New Forest is far from new. Once a royal hunting preserve, it’s now one of the UK’s most visited national parks, spanning 140 miles of woodland, heathland and river valleys. Spend a long weekend in a thatched cottage, gaze up at giant sequoias, cycle through quaint villages, and meet the native ponies. Families ock to the ‘Peppa Pig’ themed ç Forest of Dean, Fallow Deer, Kumweni Sherwood Forest, Royal Oak, John W. Schulze ê

Paultons Park, while Longdown Activity Farm and the New Forest Wildlife Park are a popular spot for animal lovers. The New Forest is also conveniently close to the UK’s glorious south coast. Watch the boats come and go from the harbour town of Lymington, or walk along the beach to Hurst Castle from Milford-on-Sea. The Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire Step inside JRR Tolkien and JK Rowling’s magical worlds with a trip to Gloucestershire’s Forest of Dean. Its mysterious depths supposedly inspired Middle Earth, and key scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows were also lmed here. Dean’s history stretches back to medieval times, when it was used as a royal hunting forest. Today, a landscape of woodlands, rivers, hills and valleys make it an adventurer’s playground. Recharge your batteries from a remote forest cabin before taking a high ropes course in the treetops or exploring the underground mine workings of Clearwell Caves. The area is also home to one of the best rivers in the country for canoeing and kayaking – the River Wye. Paddle down the river solo or join a relaxing boat cruise, learning about the landscape as you go. Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire It’s hard to ignore Robin Hood when you’re in Sherwood Forest, with countless pubs, lodges and even a festival named after him. But the forest is much more than an ancient stomping ground for its most famous hero. Many visit to see the gigantic oak trees, namely The Major Oak, which is believed to be 1,100 years old and the biggest in Britain! Explore the hundreds of acres of ancient woodland here on foot or by bike, ticking off the Robin Hood statues along the way. Its history as a royal hunting forest means it’s also dotted with grand ducal estates, many of which are open to the public.

New Forest, Pony, Victor Ochieng è

You could even time your visit around the annual Robin Hood festival, held in the forest every summer. Storytelling, sword ghting, dancing, and food, drink and craft stalls come together to create a fun atmosphere for all ages.

Alcester Town Council JULY-AUGUST 2021

The Greig Hall - Update In April, Alcester Town Council took ownership of a very sad and derelict Greig Hall, an iconic building that has been standing empty for 10 years. Why? We have a vision to reopen the hall next year as an entertainment, arts & community centre for the benefit of the residents of Alcester.

Since taking over the keys we have cleared out a huge amount of rubbish, making it both a safer place to work and allowing us to assess the results of the damage from vandalism and neglect. To help us in this challenge we will be working with our fantastic volunteers, both to restore and ultimately run the hall. But this will be for nought if the vandalism continues. Due to its unloved state, the hall has become a magnet for children. We appeal to parents to stop their children playing there, especially on the dangerous roof. We want the hall to be used, not abused. This is an exciting project and will create something exceptional for our town. Visit us at our website at www.greighall.org.uk and if you have the time, volunteer to help us realise the dream.

Bidford on Avon Parish Council in the County of Warwickshire

NEW PARISH COUNCILLORS Following the resignations of Cllrs Atkins and Keeley, the Parish Council is delighted to advise that it has co-opted two new councillors to replace them on the Parish Council. Cllrs Moore and Thompson were officially co-opted and accepted the role of Parish Councillors at the Parish Council Meeting of 30th June 2020. They are most welcome and we are all looking forward to listening to their ideas and working with them to make Bidford on Avon a better place to live and work. You will find their details on the Parish Council website at https://bidfordonavon-pc. gov.uk/parish-council/#councillors COVID 19 I had hoped to be able to celebrate the end of the restrictions on the expected day of June 21st. However, as we all know, things are still looking somewhat dicey and it has been postponed to July 19th with “no guarantees” though we are assured it will take something catastrophic to further delay it. In the meantime, Council would encourage you to a) continue regular testing if you are back at work, volunteering or in regular contact with others and b) to adhere to the current rules both inside and outside and remember “Hands, Face, Space and Fresh Air”.

We are so proud that the Young Photographer who won our local heat is a Midlands representative in the national finals. Ned Fotheringhame from Chipping Campden school submitted three beautiful ‘Wild’ images & we picked him as our winner & forwarded his photos for district judging. Now he has won that round we asked for his choice of the images to go into the national finals. Ned has chosen ‘A Sunny Spot’ which features a hidden spider awaiting its prey at the entrance to its web. The photo was taken on 12 June 2020 Here’s the technical bit. Taken on a Canon PowerShot SX720 HS, it has not been edited or modified. The winner of the national finals will be given the opportunity to participate in a vocational experience with a professional photographer. We hope you will join us in wishing Ned huge luck in the finals.

With regular exercise, a good diet and lots of love and care, your dog or cat can make it to a ripe old age without too many problems. But just like us, minor ailments creep in and their onset needs to be watched and managed. Exercise Although they may be a bit slower, senior dogs do still need regular exercise. Just don’t overdo it, otherwise not only will you be carrying your pet home, they will suffer for several days afterwards. Older cats need to be encouraged to move, and scheduling time to play every day is every bit as important as walks are for dogs. Hearing & Sight If your dog or cat appears to be ignoring you when you call them, it could be a bit of hearing loss. Get used to catching their eye when speaking to them. If their sight is going, take care to approach them quietly and slowly so that they aren’t startled.

Toilet Access They may also need to go to the toilet more frequently and be unable to hold on as long between visits. Give them easy access to their toilet area and/or let them out more frequently. Aches & Pains Signs of being less agile are to be expected but if they struggle to get up or can’t manage stairs or pavements, talk to your vet as there may be treatments that can help.

Alcester’s Roman History Brought To Life For A Day.

A

lcester’s Roman Museum recently collaborated with artist Mark Ferraby as part of arts organisation Live & Local’s LivingRoom project, to create a unique film celebrating Alcester’s Roman history. The trustees of the Roman History Museum, headed up by Chair, Susan Juned, have been working with musician Mark Ferraby during Local and Community History Month to develop and film a tale about an imagined night and day in Roman Alcester, centred around the town’s market place. Mark Ferraby worked with the trustees and local residents to create and film a story that involved community groups and individuals. They explored a story based around the Samian Ware pottery that is on display in the museum. The tale explores how some beautiful pottery, imported from Europe, became abandoned and buried in a pit, unused but broken. Community groups contributed with songs and monologue to illustrate the tale of a Roman community, a scrappy mongrel dog, and the accident that

may have caused the pottery to be broken in the Roman marketplace. The project has involved a range of talented people from the local community, including a Brownies group, an ensemble from the Alcester Male Voice choir, classical singer Cressida Dolphin, and the town’s very own centurion, Mick Parker. The filmmaker was Ben Atkinson and local resident Nina Knapman produced and directed the film. Filming took place from the end of April through to mid-May, in line with all Covid restrictions, and the final film is available to watch on the Museum’s website and Facebook page, as well as on the Live & Local LivingRoom website. The finished film is an intriguing and fun way to engage people of all ages in the town’s remarkable Roman history. The trustees are planning to show it, not just in the museum and in schools, but also at various places around town, including the Heritage Open Day on 22nd September. Alcester’s Roman Museum is open to the public on a Tuesday 11.00 – 14.45 and Saturdays 13.15-15.45 until Covid

restrictions are lifted, when we will resume full opening times. Our volunteers are happy to welcome visitors and show you the Samian Ware and the tile with a dog’s paw print. About the artist: As a solo artist, Mark Ferraby has toured with ‘Robin Hood Tales and Music’, Iranian story ‘The Little Black Fish’ and ‘Telling Tall Tales - stories of Giants in Ireland and Scotland’. Each is interwoven with music, some pre-existing but most written to suit the performance. Presently in schools, Mark is touring ‘Strings That Go Ping’ presenting the science behind the music of stringed instruments. About Live & Local LivingRoom: Live & Local Ltd. (liveandlocal. org.uk) is a not-for-profit organisation providing diverse arts experiences to people living in rural areas, supporting vibrant communities, and enhancing life quality, civil society and local economies. It co-ordinates seven rural and community touring networks, helping village halls and community venues across many counties. This project was funded by Stratford-on-Avon District Council and Arts Council.
