Dare I say it, but at the time of writing, things feel pretty hopeful. Non-essential shops and businesses have re-opened and my social media scrolling has been brightened up no end by seeing posts from some wonderful local businesses getting back to some kind of normality. This has been such a tough year for independent businesses and you can read some great reasons for shopping locally on page 8. One of the highlights of my summer last year was the return to local cricket; the fresh air and lazy summer afternoons of life as a spectator, with a hastily-put-together picnic, allowing for our family to gain respite from the difficulties of pandemic life. And here we are again, heading into a new season, about which you can read in ‘View from the boundary’(p.28).
As lockdown lifts, I’ve noticed from conversations with customers that there’s a certain degree of caution and anxiety after being in hibernation for so long. The past year or so has been a big upheaval for so many and I’m a staunch advocate for making sure people look after themselves, both physically and mentally. If you’re finding that you’re struggling, please don’t suffer in silence. Stratford Samaritans are one of a range of fantastic charities and agencies that could help you, and you can read 0300 555 8171 more about their work on page 44. 01789 773239 As the weather improves (please let us have a decent summer!), 0844 855 2322 and with increased outdoor, well-ventilated living, I’m sure so 07771 616189 many of us will be wanting to get out in the garden, if we have 01789 766750 one. Novice gardeners can get extra tips for planting as we 01789 762450 transition from spring to summer. Turn to our gardening article 01789 766200 on page 18 for details. 01789 270744 For the ambitious cooks amongst you, we have a beautiful Cherry 01386 871777 & Coconut Layered Parfait recipe on page 10. Give it a go and tag 01789 262889 us in on any photos of your creations (search for us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter). 999 or 112 01789 444816 08008 00151 08004 04090 08001 11999

10 Great Reasons to Shop Local
Online shopping is wonderfully convenient and is booming. But recent research from Barclaycard Payments indicated that during the last year there was a signicant uptick in local shopping too, particularly in food and drink specialist stores. You might think “well we couldn’t travel or eat out, so no surprises there”. However, the research also indicated that most people intend to continue to keep their custom local, even after restrictions are lifted. Here are a few of the reasons we have fallen in love with shops again.
For Our Community Invested d iin S Success Local businesses are owned and staffed by people who live in this area and have more of an emotional and nancial investment in the community’s welfare and future. Character The unique character of your community is dened in part by the shops, pubs and restaurants. This contributes to your overall satisfaction with where you live and supports the value of your property. Keep it in the Community Locally owned businesses will often purchase from other local companies, service providers and farms. This brings two benets: the money and jobs stay right here and there are fewer miles between the producer and the purchaser. Competition and Variety A town of homogenised chain stores is a town without character. Competition is healthy and with no corporate mandate to adhere to, a small business is free to introduce new products and try different ideas. Paying Their Taxes The big conglomerates often play the system such that their taxes in the UK are a tiny percentage of the prots they make in this country. It’s legal, but it doesn’t mean it’s good. The local businesses are far more likely to be contributing their fair share into the UK’s coffers.
For Ourselves More Than Shopping Regular patronage of small local outlets means the owner and staff will recognise you and get to know you. That social connection – which we’ve all sorely missed over the last year – is both important and highly enjoyable. Touch and Feel Internet pictures are no substitute for seeing and touching products yourself. You are less likely to make a mistake if you’ve already handled your purchase. Easy to Return Goods Online shopping is easy. Online returns less so and often you have to pay to send back unwanted or faulty items. Personal Service You won’t be restricted to just what’s on the shelf. Ask the person behind the counter and not only can they offer advice, but they may be able to order it in for you too. A Chance to Socialise You don’t accidentally meet people sat on your sofa. Being out and about means there’s a chance of bumping into someone you know. What’s more, you’ll start seeing the same faces around so might nd yourself with new friends too.
In summary, what’s not to like? Good for your community, good for the environment and good for your own well-being. Let’s keep our towns and villages alive by shopping locally.

ry Carpet, a carpetcleaning business based locally in Honeybourne, is proud to promote the use of environmentally responsible and economical products as an alternative to the use of wet carpet cleaning, which uses large quantities of water and heavy liquid detergents.
By using a cleaning powder, slightly moistened with just the right amount of detergent and wetting agents and a counter-rotating brush machine, the granules are agitated deep into carpet pile, absorbing dirt and deodorising the floor. Once complete, the granules are vacummed away to leave behind a dry, clean carpet, ready for immediate use. The environmental benefits of choosing dry over wet carpet cleaning are clear. Less water wastage

and heavy detergents, not to mention the environmentally friendly products used that pose no risk to indoor air quality. In addition to this, the risk to carpets of shrinkage or expansion is zero because there’s no sudden dramatic changes to the carpet’s temperature or moisture content – something that can’t always be said for using wet carpet cleaning methods. This also means that all carpet types can benefit from dry cleaning, whether they are made from wool or synthetic fibres, as evidenced by independent testing by the Woolsafe board. If you’re looking to make an environmentally friendly switch when it comes to cleaning your carpets, contact Dry Carpet today on 01386 800327 or visit their website dry-carpet.co.uk for more information.

With the warmer weather and more time being spent in your garden, you may be considering additions, such as something to bring more architecture or structure, to clothe a wall or fence, or add perfume or perhaps colour at an ‘off’ time of year. It’s important to plant correctly, so what are the top tips for tremendous planting? Make sure the plant is properly suited to the space you have available and dig the planting hole bigger than the current root ball. Use a fork on clay soils, as this is less likely to impede drainage, and make sure the hole is large enough to incorporate some bulky organic matter plus some grit. Fork over the sides of the planting hole. Use garden compost, well-rotted manure or proprietary planting mix to improve the soil texture and add nutrients. If the soil is really poor, use some general fertiliser. Tease the roots out well before planting. If necessary, soak the root ball in water for a couple of hours rst, to loosen it up and make it easier for the roots to spread. Lower the plant into the hole and gradually add the soil mixed with planting compost. Check that only the roots are buried, not the stem, as planting too deep can kill and will make the plant perform poorly. (The only exception to this is clematis.) Place a cane over the top of the planting hole to judge the correct soil level. Firm the soil around the roots. The surface of the compost on the existing root ball needs to be level with the soil surface. Re-check the planting depth, water in well and apply a 7.5cm (3”) deep mulch all over the root area. This reduces moisture loss and helps keep weeds in check.
Very lanky or large tress should be staked. Make k sure that the stake goes in so that root damage is minimised, holding it in place with a tree-tie and buffer. Short stakes are generally believed to be best. Keep the new tree or shrub really well watered and don’t let the soil become dry – watering is key to success in this establishment phase. It’s good to have a garden that’s productive and pretty, so save some space for growing some vegetables. At this time of year, you can still raise some plants from seed yourself, but you may want to buy some garden-ready plants to get things moving even more quickly and ensure they crop before the season ends. For a selection of my favourite varieties of tomatoes, sweetcorn, broccoli, runner beans, climbing French beans, lettuces, beetroot, peppers, chillies, courgettes, squash, onions and more, accompanied by my weekly tips and advice, take a look at my new website and select what you want to grow from the UK-grown range!
At www.pippagreenwood.com you’ll nd stylish cloches, Nemaslug, practical and pretty plant supports, the fantastic SpeedHoe, Grower Frames and the ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa’ system.

You’ve probably seen premium fuels on offer when lling up. They’re often more expensive than ‘regular’ petrol and diesel, commanding more pence per litre with the promise of better efciency – among other things. So, are premium fuels really worth it and what do they do? What are premium fuels? So-called premium fuels promise better engine response, smoother running, lower emissions and improved fuel economy. Premium petrol options deliver a higher octane rating – whereas regular unleaded has an octane rating of 95 in the UK, super unleaded increases this to between 98 and 100. This higher rating unlocks the engine’s full potential and allows it to run more effectively. Many petrol retailers offer premium fuels, such as Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate and Esso Synergy Supreme. Diesel, meanwhile, features a higher cetane rating in premium versions compared to standard ones. It means that the fuel ignites quicker when subjected to pressure in the engine. What do they promise? Premium unleaded is said to have an effect on throttle response, engine smoothness and emissions. They’re mostly pitched towards performance cars, as more highly tuned engines react more favourably to higher-octane fuels. You’ll probably notice that the powertrain responds more keenly to throttle inputs when it’s using premium fuel. Premium diesel, meanwhile, won’t affect engine
response much but promises cleaner running with fewer exhaust particulates being emitted. Should I run my car on premium fuels all the time? You’ll likely notice the switch to premium fuel if you have a high-end sports or performance car, particularly when it comes to longer trips where the fuel can better work through the engine’s system. Diesel owners will most likely benet from premium fuel if they have a sooty engine, as these fuels can ‘clean’ the engine of any leftover deposits and hence rid your car of sooty emissions from the exhaust. What is the price difference? The difference between regular and super unleaded is quite large. At the time of writing it was 15p per litre on average – quite an increase that will certainly make a difference for a full tank of fuel. For example, a regular family-sized car with a 55-litre tank that cost £62.70 to ll with regular fuel would cost to £70.95 to ll with premium fuel. Should I use premium fuels as a way of maintaining my car instead? It’s a good idea. Rather than using a premium fuel each time you ll up, look at it instead as aw way of preserving the life of your engine. Pe erhaps prior to undertaking a longer journey ll up with super unleaded or premium diesel and allo ow it to effectively work through the engine. Byy doing this, you allow these fuels to clean you ur engine. Over longer trips, your engine can pro operly warm up and clear any deposits. It’s ag good technique to use prior to an MOT, too, wh hen engines have to be at their cleanest in ord der to meet emissions tests.

s I write, we are only 4 days removed from snowstorms and temperatures are in the steady single figures, so it can only mean that summer is here and it’s time to get out and play some cricket! With the lockdown over, national vaccination roll-out in full flow and the vector of disease being ‘so last year’ local cricketers throughout the region are itching to get started. The country is still in the midst of a pandemic, which is clearly nothing to take lightly, but cricket proved through the end of the summer of 2020 that the game can be played; from the village green to the international arena, in a manner ensuring the safety of players, supporters and the volunteers essential to making the game happen. No changing rooms, no communal teas and regular sanitisation breaks are small sacrifices to make to ensure we can spend our weekend afternoons out on the field. Internationally, the England side are back in the country and preparing for their next stint in the bubble. Series against New Zealand, Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan should hopefully see the return of crowds for the first time since 2019; being one of the hopeful attendees I’ve got everything crossed that I can sit down to watch the action at Edgbaston! More locally, we are in the midst of a cricketing boom. Our local teams are expanding, and everyone is optimistic for the coming months. The Cotswold Hills League starts in May and, after a missed season of league competition,
28 connectionmags.co.uk
Exhall & Wixford will be looking to retain their status as Premier Division champions. Alcester & Ragley are competing in Division One following relegation from the top-flight and are hoping to bounce straight back. Division Two sees Temple Grafton aiming to capitalise on a great 2020 and get to Division One for the first time in their history. Great Alne and Bidford on Avon both compete in Division Three, having claimed promotion at the end of 2019. Alcester’s second string and Welford on Avon are both in Division Four, again after earning promotion from Division Five. Perhaps the real battle for local supremacy will happen in the lowest division, where Exhall’s second eleven will be competing with second teams from Bidford and Temple Grafton. Certainly one to keep an eye on for The Connection Magazine. In the Worcestershire League, both Harvington and Cookhill find themselves at the same level this season, in Division Eight South and East respectively. Harvington will be looking to reverse their poor 2019 which saw them relegated into the regional section of the competition. We will keep across all the action through the coming months and hopefully be well placed to report on the success of our local sides later in the summer. Now, let us hope for some sun and some higher temperatures.

NEIGHBOURHOOD N EIGHBOURHOOD W WATCH ATCH A ALCESTER LCESTER Protect Your Car : Keep it Locked Lit and Empty. Most car crimes happen because cars are left unlocked and both new and old cars are at risk. The good news is that there are simple steps everyone can take to help reduce the risk to their car. Police say that there is only a 46% recovery rate and are reminding everyone to leave their car “locked, lit and empty.” Leave your car: 1. Locked: A simple mistake that can prove calamitous: 44% of cars are broken into via an unlocked door. 2. Lit: 80% of car crime occurs during the evening or at night. Park near street lamps or in a busy area. 3. Empty: Owners often forget that personal belongings are at as much risk of being stolen as the car itself. “Car thieves are opportunists”. Leaving items on a car seat or forgetting to lock your car can act as an invitation for crime. Double-check where and how you’ve parked your car with Locked, Lit and Empty.
Scams. Key signs to spot a Fake. 1. Official text messages will have the name of the organisation on it. eg NHS, Vodafone. If the text shows it was from another mobile number but claims to be from an organisation, then report and delete immediately. 2. If website links look slightly different from normal, eg, Royal Mail’s website is royalmail. com, the scam website may be royal.mail. com. Use google to find out official website address. 3. If you are asked to provide your account number and the long number on your bank card, it is a red flag. 4. Never feel pressurised. If you are told you have a limited time to respond, it is another red flag. Suspicious emails forward to report@phishing.gov.uk. Suspicious text messages can be sent to 7726 which spells SPAM on keyboard and is free of charge. Anyone who has provided persional information tell their bank and report to Action Fraud (see below).
Communicating with the Police: Emergencies and active crime, call 999. BACK OF THE NET Well here we are, at the end of another season. The first that has made armchair fans of us all. It’s not been fun for any ‘real’ fans who turn up week in, week out but at least we’ve had the excitement of watching VAR decisions play out live. Imagine being in the stands and waiting in frustration while someone miles away takes his time making a decision involving macro precision with their straight lines. And gets it wrong. There were so many results that went against what was generally expected at the start of this season, with many pundits suggesting it was all down to the lack of fans in the grounds. That may be the reason but I believe the leagues have gradually sorted themselves out and the final positions are not going to be much different to what would have been expected.
Certainly, in the Premiership, Fulham and West Brom would have been among the favourites to return to the Championship (sorry all you WBA fans). Sheffield United perhaps not so obvious relegation candidates after their previous season, but they seem to have been found out. The biggest surprise for many has been the poor form of Liverpool, particularly since the turn of the year. And it’s not all down to van Dijk being absent. Another big surprise has been the rise of West Ham. It’s a similar story in the Championship, with most of the table not raising eyebrows. That’s till you see Derby County struggling after previous good seasons. It’s to be hoped that Coventry and Birmingham will stay up, being well supported local sides. Another side with local support is looking good for promotion from League 2. Cheltenham Town must feel they have one foot in Division 1 after a great season. But to return to the biggest talking point in many seasons, fans will be hoping for a return to the stands next season. I, for one, am fed up of the fake TV fan sounds. Till next season...

If you’re craving sandy beaches and coastal scenery, but aren’t pinning much hope on travelling abroad this summer, the Welsh county of Pembrokeshire could be the staycation you’re searching for. Nestled into the tip of Wales’ most westerly point, Pembrokeshire’s dramatic cliff faces, horseshoe bays and sandy beaches could fool you into thinking you travelled abroad after all. The county’s coastline is so beautiful, in fact, that it’s a national park in its own right. Then there are its Celtic and pre-Celtic sites, stunning castles and offshore islands, not to mention Britain’s smallest – and probably most charming – city. Whether you’re a rambler, birdwatcher or historian, or simply want to feel the sand between your toes, Pembrokeshire has something for everyone. And to top it off, it’s no more than half a day’s drive from much of the South-East and Midlands, and is easily accessible by train too. Before you get packing, check out these top things to do during your stay. Spend a day in St Davids The tiny city of St Davids is really no bigger than a village, but is full to the brim with history, religious signicance and Welsh charm. Its star attraction is the twelfth century cathedral, which is also the birthplace and burial site of Wales’ patron saint, St David. A pilgrimage site for centuries, the cathedral still draws in thousands of religious and non-religious visitors each year. After a tour of the cathedral, pay a visit to the medieval ruins of Bishop’s Palace on the
32 connectionmags.co.uk
opposite side of the river. And don’t leave without stopping for ice cream or coffee in one of the city’s cosy little eateries! Walk the Pembrokeshire Coast Path 186 glorious miles of sheer coastal beauty, Pembrokeshire Coast Path is one of the most spectacular long-distance trails in Britain. Established in 1970, the path runs from Amroth in the south all the way to St Dogmaels in the north. Serious hikers take on the whole trail over two or three weeks, but you only have to walk a small section to get a taste of the coastline’s sublime scenery. Drink in Pembrokeshire’s dramatic cliff tops and stunning ocean views, looking out for rare birds, and stop for a rest on one of the gloriously wide, sandy beaches that are peppered across the trail Hop from beach to beach If you miss collapsing onto a soft, sandy beach, Pembrokeshire could be the answer. The beaches here are renowned for being some of the best in the UK. And with 50 to choose from, you’re spoilt for choice. Barafundle Bay is a must-visit – a pocket of semi-tropical paradise on Pembrokeshire’s south coast. Home to the magnicent North and South beaches, Castle Beach and Harbour Beach, the seaside town of Tenby is also a fantastic place to stay if you’re a fan of sea and sand.

Then there are the water sports. Adventure companies have been cropping up all over the peninsular, giving visitors the chance to try water skiing, sailing, surng, kitesurng, kayaking and coasteering. Born and bred on these very shores, coasteering is a Pembrokeshire speciality. Try this thrill-seeking combination of adventure swimming, rock climbing and cliff jumping to get up close and personal with Pembrokeshire’s wonderful wildlife. Visit a Celtic village If you’ve ever wondered how things might have looked thousands of years ago, Pembrokeshire’s very own Iron Age settlement can paint a pretty accurate picture. Evidence of numerous Iron Age roundhouses has been excavated at the treasured historical site of Castell Henllys, dating back to between 500 and 100 BC. The Celtic village has now been reconstructed for visitors to experience. Take a tour of the four roundhouses and old granary, and stroll across the site’s beautiful woodland and riverside paths, learning about Celtic life, myths and legends.
Take a boat to Pembrokeshire’s islands Pembrokeshire’s rocky offshore islands are known for their rich and diverse wildlife, with pufns, grey seals and thousands of rare birds all calling the islands home. Skomer and Skockholm are by far the most visited. Take a boat trip there during nesting season to sight millions of seabirds, including razorbills, pufns, storm petrels and guillemots, and stay overnight to witness the islands at their m most peaceful. Ramsey Island is another popular visit for wildlife enthusiasts. This RSPB bird reserve is an important breeding site for endangered species such as the chough and peregrine, and is open during the summer months for day trips.

Bidford on Avon Parish Council in the County of Warwickshire
CLLR JOY KEELEY It was with great sadness that the Chairman, Council and Clerk received the Letter of Resignation from Cllr Keeley. For over 30 years she has represented the local community of Bidford-on-Avon, working hard on its behalf: she was Chairman of the Parish Council when Bidford successfully campaigned to keep the Fire Station open and was instrumental in ensuring Warwickshire County Council and the Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service heard the voice and saw the people of Bidford. We thank her for her absolute dedication to the local community and her support of the Parish Council which she served so well over her many years of service and wish her all the best. MAY 2021 ELECTIONS The Elections of our County Councillor and the Police Crime Commissioner were postponed from May 2020 and will now take place on Thursday 6th May 2021. If you live in Barton, Bidford or Marlcliff voting is at the Crawford Memorial Hall, Salford Road. If you are a Broom resident, voting is at Broom Village Hall, High Street, Broom. You can find details of the candidates on the Parish Council website at https://bidfordonavonpc.gov.uk/warwickshire-county-councilelections-persons-nominated/ PROJECT MANAGER The Parish Council has recently appointed Andrew Maliphant, of Local Council Consultancy, as the Project Manager for one of its larger projects: a Recreational Strategy and Leisure/Youth Activity Centre. Andrew has great experience of working with local communities and comes highly recommended. The intention is for him to consult with you, the local community, and gather your thoughts and suggestions to ensure the Parish Council has the necessary information to make the final decision regarding a Leisure/Youth Activity Centre based on a Recreational Strategy that reflects the wishes of the local community. A Steering Group will be set up and Council urges interested parties to respond and be part of this. ANNUAL PARISH ASSEMBLY Due to current COVID 19 restrictions, Council has agreed to hold this year’s event virtually to ensure as many residents as possible can

attend. Councillors are conscious that some residents are unable to join Zoom Meetings and it intends to hold a number of more “informal” Parish Assemblies through the year once things get back to normal. They will include refreshments! MEETINGS Following advice from the National Association of Local Councils (NALC/WALC) the Parish Council will be considering the approval of the following changes: - Annual Meeting of the Parish Council. This meeting must, by law, take place in May. In order to be able to meet safely and allow access by members of the public, to change the date to Tuesday 4th May at 7.30 pm. - Planning Committee and Parish Council Meetings normally held on the seconnd and last Monday of the month will be suspended until Monday 26th July 2021. - Emergency COVID 19 Group (consists of the Chairman, Vice Chairman and Clerk) to have its Delegated Powers extended. This will cover: - Planning Applications (unless contentious) - Schedule of Payment - Emergency The Emergency COVID 19 Group will consult with Council when executing its delegated powers and will not take any decision that requires the full consideration and decision of Full Council. Struggling
post-lockDown?
S
amaritans of Stratford-upon-Avon and District were established in 1990. The branch now consists of 126 listening volunteers and is located in Tyler House, Tyler Street, just off the Birmingham Road, a few metres from the gardens behind Shakespeare’s birthplace. Our volunteers travel in for their shifts from all over South Warwickshire, including Alcester, Studley, Bidford, Welford and the surrounding villages. We have excellent volunteering facilities, which means our volunteers feel safe and we have been able to continue to respond to callers 24/7, despite the challenges of the pandemic. When COVID first struck, around 25% of our volunteers had to self-isolate for various reasons, but by the end of 2020 we had still managed to increase the number of listening hours and calls answered by around 30%. It really was a brilliant effort by volunteers to make sure users of our helpline could still get through. Many are desperate and in despair when they call, often suicidal, so it was essential we kept going as other sources of support disappeared through lockdown. In fact, remarkably, Stratford Samaritans have managed to continue to recruit and train new volunteers all year by using Zoom, which has resulted in volunteer numbers reaching a record high. We are an independent charity, affiliated to the national Samaritan organisation, one of around 200 in the UK and Republic of Ireland, that

together offer a 24/7 freephone service (116 123). It costs around £45,000 a year to run our branch. Last year, Samaritans nationally answered 4 million phone calls and 400,000 emails. Every 7 seconds, Samaritans responds to a call for help. There’s no typical person who calls Samaritans’ helpline. There’s no typical problem that people talk too us about. People take to us about job stresses, being out of work, money troubles, family struggles, relationship issues, trying to measure up, feeling alone, feeling worthless, feeling sad or angry all the time, getting into trouble, being abused, feeling suicidal, needing to drink to get through the day… It doesn’t matter what kind of problem you have or how big or small it may seem compared to the problems other people have. What matters to us is how your life is making you feel. Sometimes people get to a point where they feel they can’t cope, where it all feels too much to handle. It’s worse if you feel you can’t talk to anyone about what’s weighing on your mind. That’s where we come in. You can talk to us about anything that’s troubling you. If something is hurting or upsetting you, talk to us about it. Whatever life’s done to you or whatever you’ve done, we’re here.
