Roaring River EACH T IME I WI ND MY WAY D OWN ON H IGHWAY 112 TO ROARI NG RIVER STAT E PARK, EARS POP P I NG FROM T H E ELEVAT ION CHANGE, I EXI T T H E WORLD OF H UST LI NG AND BUST LI NG -- I LEAVE T H E WORLD OF CLO CKS, AND, TO MY SHORT-LIVED DISMAY, I RELI NQ UISH CELL P HONE SERVICE. Nestled deep in a valley of Ozark hills in southwest Missouri, Roaring River State Park imparts a rugged beauty. A clear blue stream dissects the surrounding mountains, worn down by millenia of weathering. Originating from a spring that pumps out an impressive 20 million gallons of water per day, Roaring River provides an excellent environment for the trout and a mecca for wildlife in the surrounding area. As in the olden days, people are still drawn to the beauty and the life-giving force of such a river, though we must give credit where credit is due: the sparkling trout that flip and dive just reel them in!
History Roaring River was first used for milling operations in 1835. Three mills operated at this location prior to the civil war. During the war, one was destroyed and the remaining two mills continued operating for the next 40 years. The last mill was converted into a hotel in the early 1900s by Roland Bruner who purchased the property to use as a trout fishing destination. In 1924, Thomas Sayman, a St. Louis businessman, recognized the unique beauty of the area and purchased and donated 2,500 acres of land, which would later

become Roaring River State Park, to the State of Missouri. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) developed much of the park’s infrastructure, most of which still exists today including picnic shelters, restrooms, Deer Leap trail, Camp Smokey and the original park lodge. Several of these structures and areas are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Ozark Chinquapin Nature Center, though renovated since, was also constructed by CCC members as a bathhouse for a proposed 30-acre lake. The lake plan was abandoned after
initial construction efforts proved unmanageable due to massive silt deposits caused by upstream erosion. As a result, the intended bathhouse became a clubhouse for group activities and eventually evolved into the Ozark Chinquapin Nature Center. Roaring River boasts a fascinating natural history as well. Rich in springs and caves, Roaring River is a characteristic example of the delicate and unique karst geography located in southwest Missouri. This geology provides a prime habitat for a myriad of plant and animal species. Because
er
Give a person a fish and they will eat for a day of this, more than 2,000 acres of the park’s 4,300 acres are protected and known as the Roaring River Hills Wild Area. Within the Roaring River Hills Wild Area, there are hundreds of acres of dolomite glades. Characterized by rocky, open hillsides, glade areas are the most threatened habitat in Missouri due to the overgrowth of Eastern Red Cedars. In an effort to preserve these delicate and dwindling habitats, Roaring River State Park periodically conducts controlled burns to maintain the open landscape.
Rich in cultural and natural history, Roaring River is foremostly known for its premier trout fishing. The spring provides a prime habitat for the trout which are stocked by the Missouri Department of Conservation’s hatchery located on-site. Stop by the hatchery with the kids and feed the fish, they’ll love it (the kids and the fish!) The park store conveniently sells fishing licenses and tags along with equipment, so there’s no excuse to miss this experience of a lifetime. The park also provides cleaning and fillet stations so you really can eat for a day (or longer!)

Teach a person to fish and they will feed themselves for a lifetime Before you grab your licenses, tackle and bait at the park store, make sure you brush up on the rules for trout fishing. You can find a link to the fishing regulations on the Roaring River State Park website. And if you’re an experienced fisherperson, well, there is no better time to teach someone else how to fish!
To camp or not to camp, that is the question For many of the folks who visit Roaring River State Park, camping is a big part of the experience. The park has both primitive campsites and campsites with electric hook-ups. The developed areas of the park include three separate campgrounds with 187 campsites. As a camper, you’ll have access to modern restrooms and warm showers. But you don’t have to be an avid camper to be an avid fisherman. Rustic cabins are available throughout the park or you can opt for a room at the Emory Melton Inn, a lodge located in the heart of Roaring River State Park. Campground reservations can be made by calling 877-422-6766 or by visiting www. mostateparks.com. During the summer, reservations fill quickly, so it’s best to make your reservation as soon as possible. Cabin and Inn reservations can be made by calling 417-847-2330.
Other Activities Not into the whole fishing scene? Or are you trying to convince a family member who isn’t into trout fishing to come along anyway? There are plenty of other ways to participate in the excitement of trout season without picking up a pole. Roaring River State Park has more than 10.5 miles worth of hiking trails, ranging from easy to moderate, to keep that active family member or friend happy. Trails wind along bluffs, through hardwood forests, over glades and beside the river

providing hours of physical activity. While you’re out exploring, be sure to stop by the nature center where you can view interpretive displays, see live animals and pick up some souvenirs and books. And speaking of books, there’s no better place to finish that 500-page novel or sewing project than Roaring River’s picnic areas, which provide the perfect respite and an excellent place to reunite with family and friends and socialize.
Events From fishing to eagle watching, Roaring River offers plenty of outdoor activities throughout each season. Â Roaring River also offers various interpretive programs such as the Explorer School Program and Wildflower workshops for young explorers and people
wanting to learn more about Missouri wildlife. All programs are free and are offered on the weekends March 1 through Memorial Day, and August 1 through October 31. Daily programs are offered during the months of June and July. Call 417-847-3742 for more information.

The fisherman enters elated, on a trout-induced high. Wondering, hoping for a big one or maybe just a good day casting his line and drinking in the joy of nature. The hiker enters for a physical challenge. The naturalist enters to discover unique plants and animals. The child enters with a clean slate -- one of pure wonder. Whatever your reason, visiting Roaring River State Park is sure to be a memorable experience. Leave the world of tick-tocks, glowing computer screens and cellphone beeps. Feel, instead, a pole within your grip. See, instead, a valley of budding oaks and hickories lining the gravel shore of trout-laden waters. Hear, instead, the rush of Roaring River, hastening to welcome you on Opening Day and every day.

Living the trout fishing life T
IM HOMESLEY, owner of Tim’s Fly Shop located at 23387 State Highway 112 in Cassville, started fishing when he was 5 years old – a cherished memory still held by family members who knew through the years that this was something he always loved doing. “I don’t ever remember not liking it,” Tim said. “I never intended to make a job out of it – that just happened. The Good Lord must have been watching over me.” Tim got his first fly rod at the age of about 12 from his father who traded for it. With no formal instruction, Tim learned how to use the rod to catch fish on his own. “I never had any training. I’m basically self-taught,” Tim said. “As I got older, I taught myself by watching some old guys down here on the river. Over time, I had to teach myself to break some habits, some bad habits too. I was able to get my Federation Fly Casting Certificate around 1992, which allows me to teach.”
For almost 20 years, anglers from all over have gathered at Tim’s Fly Shop to check out the rods, reels, flies and anything else primarily related to trout fishing. There isn’t a single inch of his store that doesn’t display something that may be needed to catch and land the lunker you’ve always dreamed of attracting. Name brand fishing equipment from a variety of major companies can be found on display. Orvis, Winston, Scott, Diamondback and Cortland are just some of the companies that supply the equipment that Tim sells. He also carries rods from a local craftsman, Gordon Roller, who custom builds graphite and bamboo fly rods. An entire rack of Gordon’s rods are featured in the store, and Gordon’s services are recommended when anyone comes in with a rod in need of repair. Fly fishing does not need to be an expensive hobby, according to Tim. Less expensive equipment can be purchased by those who are just starting to explore the sport.

“I’ve got a full line of equipment,” Tim said. “I always tell people that I’ve got fly rods from $39 to a couple thousand if you want one. Same thing with reels, I’ve got some that start at $17 and those that sell for $700.”
“I’ll fish at least five times a week during the season. I love fishing in the park in the summertime just because there’s so many fish,” Tim shared. “A lot of people don’t believe you can go down and catch 15 to 20 fish in the morning – they’ll look at you like you’re nuts, so I won’t always tell people how many fish I’ve caught.”
“Roaring River is a very, very good teacher – all the parks are though. If you can catch fish at Roaring River, you can take that same knowledge and go anywhere in the states and catch fish.”
Tim’s greatest contribution to the local fishing community in the 30-plus years he’s worked here is the knowledge he will readily share about river conditions, equipment set-up, trout behavior and what flies or lures are working on any particular day. This is often information gained from first-hand experience because Tim will spend several mornings a week engaged in his passion for fishing the river.
14
trout times 2014
Tim loves to share his passion for fishing with others – a fact that is immediately apparent when he answers your first tentative questions. His store is equipped to handle the needs of the first-time anglers and those who have been fishing for a lifetime. Tim doesn’t just share his knowledge at the store, he also uses a variety of other tools to provide anglers with the information they need. He writes a weekly newspaper column and his website, www. missouritrout.com/timsflyshop offers current information on river conditions and tips for those who fish and those who tie flies. I’ve got some YouTube videos on there – how to hook your bait up, how to do your worms and how to do your eggs,” said Tim. “I’ve got a couple fly patterns on there I like that people use, and I’ve got suggestions on other stuff to use. There’s also a picture gallery and information about stuff that I carry.”
With all these resources, Tim sees the river itself as the greatest teacher for those who want to experience the thrill of landing a trout. “Actually, Roaring River is a very, very good teacher – all the parks are though,” Tim said. “If you can catch fish at Roaring River,
you can take that same knowledge and go anywhere in the states and catch fish.” As he gets older, Tim continues to learn and teach others about fishing. After a lifetime of experience, he still remains passionate.
“I enjoy it. I’ve never been burned out on it,” Tim shared. “I’ve got to admit that as I get older, on ultra-cold days, I’d just as soon sit around and tie flies. With weather like this, it’s hard not to fish. Why would you want to sit around in the house?”

Fun facts about Roaring River
Roaring River State Park has three independent organizations that work together as one unit to provide park visitors with a wonderful experience. Those organizations are: the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Division of Missouri State Parks, the Missouri Department of Conservation and Roaring River Concessions.
The Roaring River Spring is the 20th largest spring in Missouri, producing 20.4 million gallons of water per day. In the past, two lakes were located in the Roaring River State Park area. One lake was located between the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Lodge and the fish cleaning station. Campground #3 was once the location of the park’s other lake, known as Bass Lake. The elevation changes by over 500 feet from the highest point to the lowest point in Roaring River State Park. Divers have only descended 224 feet down into the Roaring River Spring. It is believed that the underground waterway is much deeper. The Ozark Chinquapin Nature Center, which is located adjacent to campground #3, is known as the “best kept secret” in Roaring River State Park. The state record rainbow trout was caught at Roaring River State Park. It weighed a whopping 18 pounds and one ounce. Glade and open woodland restoration is the major focus of the natural resource management at Roaring River State Park. In 1928, the State of Missouri paid $1 for the land that became Roaring River State Park.

Expert fishing advice
for the river You’ve made your reservations, packed the equipment, loaded up the family and made your way to one of the best spots in the country for trout fishing. A week never seems to be long enough to catch those big fish you can see, but never seem to hook. Is there some guidance or advice that will help? “There’s a lot of first-timers, more every year,” said Tim Homesley, owner of Tim’s Fly Shop located at 23387 State Highway 112 in Cassville. “They need to make sure they use the right line, that’s probably the most critical thing down there. You can use the cheapest rod in the world as long as you’ve got the right line and have it set up correctly. Your setup is really important.”
trout times 2014
17
Tim suggests that most of the people who fish on the river would do well to be using 2-3 lb. Line – advice that is also supported by Gordon Roller. Gordon is a local craftsman who hand builds bamboo and graphite rods. He is the owner of G.L. Custom Rod & Tackle in Cassville. Both men have been fishing in the area for well over 30 years. Tim is in the process of writing a book to share his knowledge about various aspects of fishing and how to be regularly successful. He has almost an entire chapter on setting the line with a variety of different flies and lures. “With just plastic worms alone, you need the right hook and the right size hook,” Tim explained. “You need the right amount of weight for the water you’re fishing, and you need the right size line. If you don’t have all that stuff, you could have a pretty lousy day at the river. I don’t think color is nearly as important as the correct way of setting up. There are about five to six colors of worms that will work about 99 percent of the time.”
Gordon also suggests that the lure or fly selected needs to be chosen based upon a variety of conditions specific to the time and place. “The fly that you select needs to be appropriate for the weather and the fishing conditions,” Gordon shared. “On a bright, sunny afternoon you might be fishing dry flies
18

like hoppers or beetles. They may be rising and feeding on the top, so you’ve got to watch the fish. Watch how they’re doing, watch how they’re feeding.” Hooking the fish is a skill that takes time to learn and requires sensitivity in being able to react quickly when you see or feel the fish take the hook. “I don’t know if I fish that much different than other people, I just pay more attention maybe,” said Tim. “I’ll see people fishing, and I’ll watch the fish take their bait, and they’ll never know they had a fish. A lot of times they don’t notice they’ve got a fish until it pulls the rod down and they usually miss those.” Once the hook is set, the fun begins because trout are an ornery fish that are
guaranteed to put up a fight. Many a fish have been hooked, but not landed by both men, and each fish will put up its own unique battle. Some will run and some will simply pull on the line. Both men agree that it’s important to provide the right amount of tension to successfully land a fish. “You need to keep your rod tip pointed toward the fish at all times when you’re landing one,” Gordon suggested. “After the fish concedes, I try to take the hook out of his mouth without ever taking the fish out of the water.” Both men also agree that it’s important to carefully handle a fish once it’s been caught and landed. Each feels it’s crucial to know if you plan on keeping or releasing the fish because this will determine how delicately
the fish is landed. Returning the fish to the water unharmed is a practice that allows other anglers an opportunity to catch that same fish and experience the same thrill. “If you’re going to keep the fish, just put it on a stringer, and it’s no big deal,” said Tim. “If you’re going to release it, don’t drag the fish on the bank, and try to keep the fish in the water all you can. Of course, as soon as a fish is out of water, it can’t breathe. If you’ve got a big fish on and you’re trying to release it, hold your breath. That fish can’t breathe out of the water any longer than you can hold your breath. You take a big deep breath, and as soon as you have to breathe that fish does too. Either put him back in the water for a second or two so he can get some air, or have him back in the water released by then.”

Kids Fishing Day inroduces youngsters to a world of outdoor play STORY BY JENNIFER CONNER | PHOTOS BY KERRY HAYS/MISSOURI STATE PARKS
I
F YOU ENTER ROARING RIVER State Park on May 17 and August 16 of this year, you may hear a sound that eclipses the roar of Roaring River itself, the laughter of 1,000 children fishing, reverberating down the river like a jubilant melody unleashed by nature herself. Paul Spurgeon, the hatchery manager for Roaring River State Park, coordinates Kids Fishing Days. During these events, kids are not required to have a fishing license and fishing tags are distributed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Volunteers assist children baiting lines, casting and catching trout. For many kids who participate, it is their first opportunity to ever catch a fish. Kids Fishing Day was spawned (pun intended) in 1981 with a focus on children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to get out and fish. During the first year, more than 296 youth fishing tags were distributed. Due to this overwhelming turnout, the Missouri Department of
Conservation turned Kids Fishing Day into an annual event, coordinated by local staff with support by the community. In 2003, due to its popularity, a second Kids Fishing Day was added. The program has grown exponentially since its inception. In 2013, Roaring River State Park distributed 1,217 tags during the May event, and 888 tags during the August event for a total of 2,105 tags and more importantly, a total of 2,105 children experiencing the wonder of the outdoors. Paul Spurgeon believes the sacred tradition of fishing hinges on a very special demographic: children. He also believes it’s important to provide a platform for children to experience nature as a whole, and he’s not alone.
“We want to bring families together and provide a day for them to fish and experience the outdoors together.”
trout times 2014
23
It has long been suspected that the slow migration of children from the outdoor world of nature to the indoor world of electronics has had a significant effect on children’s behavior. In his book “Last Child in the Woods,” Richard Louv explores the dwindling child/nature relationship and the drastic implications this may have on individuals and our society as a whole. Louv asserts that behavioral problems such as depression, anxiety and attention deficit disorder are more common in children who do not spend time outdoors. A dissertation published by the University of Pennsylvania Scholarly Columns examined outdoor play in children and concluded that nature-play encouraged children to voice opinions, share ideas, show empathy, cultivate creativity and demonstrate problem-solving skills by using the landscape as their teacher. It also pointed to outdoor play as a positive outlet for children plagued by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Kids Fishing Day is a great way to introduce your children to a world of outdoor play and if your kids are already avid outdoor enthusiasts, it’s a way to re-instill this value.

“We want kids to learn how to fish and grow up with the tradition. We want to bring families together and provide a day for them to fish and experience the outdoors together. We reserve a quarter of the stream just for kids and stock it multiple times during the day,” said Spurgeon. And if you’re a parent who isn’t an avid outdoors-person (yet!) never fear, volunteers are available to assist the children with baiting the hook and
26

taking the fish off the hook. Catching a fish is an exciting prospect for a youngster, but fishing isn’t the only attraction on Kids Fishing Day. Thirty conservation classes, ranging from fly fishing to pollution, are held, all in an effort to connect children, and their families, with the outdoors. In addition, a lunch is provided for participants and a bluegrass band provides entertainment during the event.
At the end of the day, the kids who have participated in at least three classes are entered into a drawing to win one of the grand prizes. Spurgeon stressed the importance of community support. “We depend on the donations we receive to make this event a success,” he said. “We use prizes as an incentive to take the classes and learn more about nature. Donated funds are also used to purchase fishing poles, tackle and bait. $10 will buy a rod and reel. We also appreciate folks donating their time.” Spurgeon said you don’t have to know anything about fishing to help out, because there’s something for everybody to do. From untangling lines to working the reception table to handing out tackle. “Our volunteers make this day a success,” Spurgeon said. Participating in kids day is a fabulous way to get involved in the important task of keeping our children in touch with the outdoors. Whether you bring your own child to experience the wonders of nature, or you make a donation to help with the drawing, or you volunteer your time, chances are, you will make a positive impact on a child. Spurgeon says his favorite part of the day is watching the children experience fishing with their family. “Lots of kids catch their first fish ever, then the parents get excited,” he said. “ It’s such a positive experience. I never get tired of watching the kids smile.”

Herons and lizards and bears, oh my!
BY JENNIFER CONNER
R
OARING RIVER State Park isn’t just a trout fishing destination, it’s a home to all sorts of Missouri creatures. Each specific type of animal is called a “species.” For instance, there are many kinds of fish, there are even different kinds of trout, but there is only one “rainbow trout.” A rainbow trout is a “species” of fish. Many wildlife enthusiasts, especially birders, are very serious about the various species they observe and identify when they are on an excursion. Some even have “life lists,” which document every species they have seen during their lifetime!
28
But you don’t have to be a serious birder or wildlife specialist to have fun counting the species you see. Take this handy-dandy list of common species you might encounter in Roaring River State Park and make it a game for the whole family. How many species will you spot on your Roaring River trip? Give yourself a point for each species you see. Can you spot and identify a species that isn’t on this list? Double points for adding a species to the list. The member of your group who has the most wildlife sightings by the end of your Roaring River State Park trip, wins!

OWERING ALOFT A RIDGE OVERLOOKING ROARING RIVER STATE Park stands the Emory Melton Inn, a lodge of quiet elegance and rustic appeal, not unlike Roaring River, itself. The 26-room lodge boasts a two-story stone fireplace with large windows overlooking the park and a full service dining facility. The original three-story lodge, built by CCC workers, still stands in the park however, the growing number of visitors in the 1990s made it painfully obvious that a larger structure was needed. Emory Melton, a former Missouri senator, for whom the inn is named, still practices law in Cassville and will be 91 this year. In 1996, Melton’s last year with the Missouri Senate, he secured a $600,000 allocation for the park, this allocation resulted in the construction of the new and improved lodge. The Inn was named after Melton and dedicated in 1998. You don’t have to sleep in the outdoors to love the outdoors. Enjoy the creature comforts to which you’re accustomed in one of the many room options available at Emory Melton Inn. Reserve a room with a breathtaking balcony view of the river below, dine in the spacious full-service Roaring River Restaurant located in the lodge while you take in the surroundings or reserve a conference room for outdoor-themed reunions with families and friends. Open March through October, Emory Melton Inn is the place to experience all the wonders of Roaring River State Park without leaving the comforts of home.

Despite damage to personal property and the park itself, no injuries were reported, according to Gena Terlizzi, communications director for Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Several campers managed to evacuate with all their belongings, tents and or campers. However, some were less fortunate. After the waters began to subside, tents could be seen wrapped around trees, some pop-up campers remained amongst flood debris, and one vehicle was still partially under water. The majority of the damage appeared to be in and around campgrounds two and three. Brian Canady, fisheries field operations chief with the Missouri Department of

Conservation, said that while no fish were lost from the hatchery, the stream population will require some work. After the flood waters subsided, postflood assessments of the streams and hatchery were made, including the effects of flooding on growth rates, hatchery conditions and public safety. Data collected by the United States Geological Survey reported at 8:40 a.m. on Aug. 8, 2013, the gauge height for Roaring River was 7.70 ft. with a stream rate of 5,900 cubic feet per second. When compared to the last measurements of 0.97 ft. and a stream rate of 91.4 cubic feet per second taken on June 5, 2013, the scale of the flooding can be seen.

Local man shares his passion for
preaching and fishing D
ON DEFFENBAUGH started fishing as a young boy while growing up in Kansas and Colorado. It was during his sophomore year in high school that Don’s family moved one last time to the beautiful state of Missouri. It was here that Don found a special place abundant with many opportunities for fishing and finding relaxation. “Missouri is a special place to fish because of the availability of good fishing,” Don said. “We have our lakes, we have our rivers, and we have places like Roaring River.” Don answered the call to preach for the Church of Christ in Cassville, very close to Roaring River. From there, he moved on to Neosho where he remained for 28 years. Even now, at the age of 77, Don continues to preach. “I tried to retire, but I didn’t like it,” Don said. “I still preach, I preach now over in Monett at the East Side Church of Christ.” Don sees preaching – and fishing – as two things that go hand in hand. “I think fishing allows you to relax,” Don shared. “If you’re thinking while you’re there, you can think about the lessons, and you can think about people with whom you’re involved and that kind of thing.”
38
trout times 2014
When he first started fishing on the river over 50 years ago, Don began like most anglers using an open faced reel and a light rod. It’s been about 20 years since he decided to learn how to fish for trout using a fly rod. “I came to fly fishing late,” Don said. “I thought it was a challenge that I needed to accept, and all of my fishing now is done by fly fishing. It took me a little while to catch on, I had to practice at home – it didn’t come naturally to me.” Over the years, Don has learned to incorporate other components of fly fishing into his experience to the point that he’s learned to tie his own flies. “I like a crackleback – in different sizes,” Don said. “I like a bead head pheasant tail in a small, and once in a while a Griffith gnat. One of my favorites is a bead head wholly bugger.” Don enjoys the challenge of fishing for trout and sees this experience as significantly different than fishing for other types of fish.
“To me, you have to fish for them differently than you do for bass or crappie,” Don said. “They’re more wily and part of it takes more skill.” For many years, Don learned those skills fishing at the river and other nearby locations. He and his son, Jon, will fish together every chance they get, and Don roughly estimates that he’ll catch about 150 fish each year. Most of those he’ll throw back, but some he’ll keep and bring home to his wife of 57 years, Mary. These days, Don fishes almost exclusively at Roaring River for its convenience and ease. As he gets older, Don appreciates the ability to fish at a place that provides him with an accessible experience.
“Roaring River’s my favorite place to fish now,” Don shared. “It’s easier access for me, and I just like catching trout.” For over 50, years Don has preached the message and relaxed on the river by fishing – two passions that he hopes to continue for many years to come. His love of the river is one he’ll share with anyone that listens. “One of the most beautiful places that one can visit is Roaring River,” said Don.

REGULATIONS Trout fishing is permitted in accordance with the state wildlife code and posted restrictions daily from March 1 through Oct. 31, and during the winter catch-and-release season from the second Friday in November to the second Monday in February on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday only.
Fishing
at Roaring River State Park
Roaring River is known for its premier trout fishing. The river is stocked regularly by the park’s hatchery, which is managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Fishing licenses and tags are available in the park store (located at the intersection of Route F and Hwy. 112), which also sells fishing equipment, tackle, camping supplies and groceries.
TROUT FISHING REGULATIONS
Roaring River State Park is divided into three zones each with the following bait or lure and creel restrictions.
ZONE 1 From the hatchery to the posted sign at the mouth of Dry Hollow Creek, only artificial lures, soft plastic baits and flies are permitted. An artificial lure is defined as a manufactured lure. Renew your spirit with a
hike through the woods
STORY AND PHOTOS BY SHERRY TUCKER
W
HAT A GREAT WAY to start the new year with a walk in the woods. It’s a pleasant way to fill your lungs with fresh air, exercise your whole body and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature all around. Though spring, summer and fall seem to be the best time for hiking, during the dreary winter, an out-of-doors exploration on a beautiful day can be rejuvenating. On January 1, Roaring River hosted a guided hike through the Devil’s Kitchen trail. This is a fairly ambitious trail that circles up and around a hill that is situated just north of the hatchery. The hike started at 10 a.m on that Wednesday morning. Though this winter has been a very cold one, especially when compared to the last two mild winters we have experienced here in the Ozarks, January 1 was a nice day. The sun was bright, there was a gentle breeze, and the temperature was above freezing, and growing warmer as the day moved along. The evening before, on New Year’s Eve, some friends discussed the hike, which they had heard information about, and we decided to do it. Besides eating black-eyed peas, what could be a better way to start the new year?

EVEN IN MID-WINTER CRITTERS CAN BE FOUND SCURRYING AROUND, LIKE THIS YOUNG ARMADILLO.
So, with several friends, two of my sons and my mom, too, we met at the park. We came to find out that this was a national event. It is called, “First Day Hike,” and there were parks all over the country joining in on this tradition. As we visited and watched the kids play near Roaring River, quite a crowd gathered. At least 50 hikers showed up to take advantage of the beautiful day and community activity.
DEVIL’S KITCHEN IS A BEAUTIFUL, NATURAL FORMATION THAT CAN BE FOUND ON THE TRAIL JUST NORTH OF THE ROARING RIVER HATCHERY.

Before setting off on our adventure, the park rangers welcomed us and visited with us about the trail we were about to hike and then we took off ! Ahh, the weather was perfect, and as we set out, it wasn’t long before cold fingers turned warm, and the chilly breeze felt refreshing. The hike immediately took us upward as we headed to the top of the beautiful hill. Even though we were a large crowd, all hiking together, it was still amazingly easy to get caught up in the beauty and serene sounds of the nature around us. Below the trail was the trickling stream. Though the water was bitter cold, it was inviting, and I had to remind myself (and the boys) that it was too cold to get into the water at all. The bare trees, and lack of undergrowth usually seem so sad to me, as I wait for springtime and green to appear. But, this morning, I
ONCE WE GOT TO THE PEAK OF THE MOUNTAIN, IT WAS NICE TO TAKE A BREAK AND ENJOY THE VIEW.
ALONG THE DEVIL’S KITCHEN TRAIL THERE ARE SEVERAL “LIVE” CAVES. A LIVE CAVE IS STILL BEING FORMED AND WILL HAVE WATER RUNNING THROUGH IT.

could appreciate the bareness, as it allowed us to see further through the woods, and notice the shapes and massiveness of the rocks and hillside around us. We explored several caves, and the rangers explained to us the difference in the caves and the geological attributes of each cave. All the kids who hiked with us that day had to be pealed away from each cave we investigated. Those kids become monkeys when they start climbing in, out and on all the rocks. They had so much fun, and the fresh air did a world of good for them, after being inside and eating sweets and treats though the holidays. As a mom, I could see the advantage of this outdoor adventure as being good for all of us, mentally and physically! We finally got to the peak of the mountain after a good vertical climb at the very top. The kids felt accomplished, and were excited that it was, “all down-hill from here!” On the way down we were excited to witness a small armadillo rustling through the oak leaves. I guess it must have been
searching for bugs or other edibles. No one touched it, but everyone got a chance to take pictures and “oooh and ahhh” over the cute little critter. Shortly after that, we made it to our trail-titled destination, Devil’s Kitchen. Devil’s Kitchen is a huge rock formation that towers on the hillside. The kids immediately conquered it by climbing to the tip-top of the huge stones. Laughter filled the valley, and a little yelling, too, as I screamed to my sons about how high the rocks were and not to get too close to the edge. We ventured down through the rest of the trail, feeling energized and a bit proud of our journey, too. After visiting with old friends, and making some new ones, we all made it to the end of the trail, which was also where the trail had begun. I look forward to hiking it again next year. Who would have thought that hiking in January would be so much fun. Four-season hiking is the way to go! Seeing the beauty of the hills in the winter, and then through the spring, summer and fall, is well worth it.
