Hold up, Wait A Minute Everybody Is Not Swimming

According to the street committee the African American and Hispanic communities need to keep a serious eye on the Aquatic Center discussions. If we are not careful and paying attention the monies needed to maintain the facility could very well result in the elimination of certain parks and recreation programs and or cutting back the hours currently available at area recreation facilities. Even prior to its completion the newly hired Parks and Recreation Director, James Worsley warned the city council members that it would take more to operate the facility than they had allocated. Now all of a sudden councilors are “in shock”. The street committee doesn’t know why you would be in shock; the “brother” told you years ago your numbers were off. It’s obvious you were either; not listening or you felt Worsley didn’t know what he was talking about. Now the street committee understands that proposed cuts in the parks and recreation department’s budget to accommodate the “Aquatic Center” could ultimately shortchange senior citizens and the majority demographic in this community that consists of African American and Hispanic children who are already primarily economically dis-

advantaged. This could very well lead to greater juvenile delinquency and crime.

On Tuesday December 15, 2015 Pops Barnes told a group of 100 swimmers who showed up at the council meeting that “we will make it happen”, speaking of keeping the aquatic facility open the full 89 hours. At the January 26, 2016 council meeting councilors Judy Thomas, Mike Baker, Glenn Davis and Skip Henderson each suggested that Worsley come up with a plan to keep the aquatic facility open for the full 89 hours a week even if it meant cutting his budget elsewhere. Surely our senior citizens and our youth are more important than any politician playing politics by vowing at council to

keep the aquatic center open no matter what has to be done to accomplish the task. I wonder what would have been said if 100 Blacks and Hispanics showed up in opposition to Parks and recreation cutbacks?

This clearly shows poor decision-making and a definite disregard for the youth and senior citizens of this community who benefit the most from programs that may be cut as a result. Should not the majority of the people be the priority not a comparatively small swimming community? The street committee would like to

draw your attention to the very reason people don’t trust politicians. If memory serves the street committee right, and it does, wasn’t it councilors Judy Thomas and Pops Barnes who were adamant about supporting then mayor Jim Whetherington’s push and

promotion of the Crime Prevention Board. Were not keeping recreation centers and programs available a part of that effort. Did not Pops Barnes run on the issue of more recreation centers and programs in Columbus? What, 100 people changed his mind?

A VIEW FROM A PEW

THURSDAY MARCH 17, 2016

Happy Anniversary To Us! the growing avenues provided by social media. By remaining laser-focused on local news it allows us to continue to stake our claim as the voice of a new era, a voice that inspires, empowers, informs and when necessary entertains our community.

It seems like only yesterday on March 25, 2005 the Courier Eco Latino newspaper published for the first time, and eleven years later we are still here. I still believe there is more that He has in store for me but I know with out a shadow of doubt this is my purpose, my calling, my ministry.

The Courier Eco Latino newspaper was founded for the same reason Samuel Cornish and John B. Russwarm started the very first African-American paper in 1827 called Freedom’s Journal. Freedom’s Journal initiated the trend of African American papers throughout the United States to fight for liberation and rights, demonstrate racial pride, and inform read

ers of events affecting the African-American community.

Our mission, which we’ve chosen to accept, is the same as our fore fathers in publication, Cornish and Russwarm. In our case we have taken it one step further as we offer the African Americans and Hispanics of our

community an opportunity to see the news through the lens of their own eyes. Most times, as you can imagine and have witnessed over the years, that view is a far cry from the view reported in the Ledger-Enquirer.

After eleven years it is no question we have solidified ourselves as a respected news publication because of our commitment to truth, honesty and integrity. From day one we placed our emphasis and efforts on those political, social or economic issues that impact our lives. We confront the issues that need confronting and ask the questions that need to be asked. That is what we try to do with every issue, in an effort to stand true to the history of the Black press.

From the very beginning we set our focus covering local news specific to Columbus, Ft. Benning and Phenix City as opposed to state and national coverage. This was and remains a conscientious effort, given our readers immediate access to information through

As our demographic and level of awareness, concern and commitment from and by our people continues to grow so too must we, as a newspaper evolve. Our goal for the future is that we become, to this community, the leading source for an authoritative perspective on the African American and Hispanic communities. That our newest publication, Courier Eco Latino, The Magazine, which we introduced last year, will become the premiere showcase of the vibrancy of our cultures as we use it to introduce the variety of people of color in our area who continue to positively influence our community in making it a better place to “Live, Grow and Play.”

As our new year begins we have once again ventured out assembling a group of young entrepreneurs who we consider experts in their field, and formed an advertising agency; The Courier Eco Latino Group”. Combined we possess well over 150 years of experience, knowledge and understanding to draw from.

We Are All about growth... an advertising agency focused on the burgeoning AfricanAmerican and Hispanic marketplace and our unique and unparalleled role to help businesses meet the growing demand this specialized market deserves. Cultivating and catering to this market is our passion. It’s the very fiber of

our being – our essence. It’s who we are and ALL we do, for WE ARE YOU. This is Why the GOP Can’t Win Black Votes Without Trump

The party establishment can’t fathom the thought of Trump being our nominee, despite him playing by the very rules that the establishment, who are trying to sabotage his campaign, created. Go figure.

I am stunned that many in the establishment ran over each other to denounce Trump over the David Duke and KKK issue, which I found kind of bizarre.

Where is Today’s Madam C.J. Walker?

Women entrepreneurs have a powerful role model when they consider Madam C.J. Walker. One of our nation’s first female selfmade millionaires, her story of combining herbs to develop and manufacture a hair pomade, of empowering tens of thousands of women as sales agents for her products, and of establishing a beauty school to teach beauty techniques (and provide economic empowerment for even more women) are the stuff of legend. She was not only an entrepreneur, but also a philanthropist. She “lived large,” owning two cars and a sprawling estate, Villa Lewaro in Irvington, New York, but she shared her wealth (Black millionaire Harold Doley purchased Villa Lewaro in 1993. It is a National Historic Landmark). She was possessed with an amazing self-confidence that served her well in business and in life.

Madam (as she is called by her great-granddaughter, A’Lelia Bundles, the keeper of the family history and author of books about her ancestor (On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker), Madam C. J. Walker: Entrepreneur (Chelsea House, 1991; revised 2008), Madam Walker Theatre Center: An Indianapolis Treasure (Arcadia Publishing, 2013)), was a character! She changed her name from Sarah Breedlove to Madam C.J. Walker to provide herself with a “classier” sounding name, and to help prevent white people from calling her “Aunt”, as they called so many African American women. “On the track, there is no Black and White, just fast and slow. For those 10 seconds you are free,” says Jesse Owens (Stephan James) in this very moving and inspiring bio/sports movie that captures the essence of this legendary athlete’s life, challenges and achievements. Race is a history lesson, personal profile and a crowd pleaser.

Before you see this movie, you might wonder why they didn’t just call it “Jesse,” or “Jesse Owens.” Ten minutes into the footage, you completely understand why. Owens feat of winning four Olympic Gold Medals did not happen in a bubble. He endured the indignities of racism and segregation in the U.S., and saw prejudice firsthand in Berlin in the 1930s. To the credit of this movie’s perceptive team, they didn’t shy away from the inequalities and degradation of the period as they retold his story. Producer Luc Dayan, who developed and produced an award-winning short film tribute to Jesse Owens and Carl Lewis, nurtured this project and was joined by producer Jean-Charles Lévy, director Stephen Hopkins (Predator 2, Lost in Space) and screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse (Halle Berry’s Frankie & Alice). Their production has a surprising sensitivity and honest response to racism that carries through for two hours and 14 minutes. James Cleveland “Jesse” Owens, who was born in Oakville, Alabama, grew up in Cleveland, Ohio demonstrating a passion for running in Junior high, which is where he met his sweetheart, Minnie. Owens made headlines when he tied the world record for the 100-yard dash, running it in 9.4 seconds, while he was in high school. He had his choice of colleges, but because his coach recommended head track coach Lawrence “Larry” Snyder (SNL’s Jason Sudeikis) at Ohio State University, he went to Ohio State.

On May 25, 1935, Owens participated in the Big Ten meet at Ferry Field in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he set three world records (long jump, 220-yard dash and 220-yard hurdles) and tied a fourth (100-yard dash), in just 45 minutes. It was an incredible achievement, one that set him up for the Olympic Trials and put him on the road to the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Behind the scenes, as Nazism spreads in Germany, Jews were being perse Read the full commentary on our website at: www.couriernews.org

Is Frank Myers...John Milton or Cyrus Beene?

By Wane A. Hailes The Courier

It has been well documented that Muscogee County School Board member, Frank Myers is adamant about replacing school board members, Pat Hugley Greene and A.J. Senior. He has been equally vocal regarding getting rid of what he considers the “established leaders” in the African American leaders that include; Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, State Representative Calvin Smyre, Senator Ed Harbison and State Representative Carolyn Hugley.

Why this White man is so insistent on deciding who our leaders are is only overshadowed by why Black folks in this community continue to allow him to do it. Here we have a man, who we have reported on many occasions, has a habit of telling jokes about Black people and using the word “nigger”. No one, other than this publication, has called him on it. There are those who don’t want to believe it for whatever reason but here is what’s strange, he has never denied it. He has never called this paper and asked us to retract the statement because it is true.

Armed with that knowledge it vexes me how some African Americans in this community believes that he honestly is concerned about the interest of our children. There are currently three African American females running for office that he has allegedly convinced to run; Joann Thomas Brown against Pat Hugley Greene and Vanessa Jackson against A.J. Senior. Shelia D. Williams is running in the open District 7 seat against former school board members Cathy Williams and Norene Marvets. As it relates to Senior Myers once again is allegedly behind the dissemination of a flyer which inaccurately disparages her with blatant lies and innuendos. (See

flyer this page). Because he is expecting people not to ask questions for themselves and instead just believe what he puts out there, here are the facts that refute each accusation. 1. Her daughter has a Master’s Degree in Education and was hired on her own merit 2. The Ethics violation claim is a play on words because she paid the fees that are accessed when you file late. All monies were paid and all reports have been filed. If you check the list with the state you will find many of the local politicians have been assessed late filing fees. It amounts to having a traffic ticket and paying it late. 3. Is nonsense because all books and class room resources are budgeted through the general fund, title funds and MANY local organization donating book bags and schools supplies. In fact, Ms. Senior gave away approximately 300 books bags full of supplies before the 2015 school year started. 4. The only schools in District 3 that could potentially qualify for the Opportunity School District Law if passed are Martin Luther King, Jr ES and Baker MS.

The real reason he wants her gone is because once she became a board member it was evident she was expected to vote the way he told her to however she refused to be the puppet to his puppet master just because he recruited her.

Which brings me to his “New Recruits”. This is where Myers becomes a combination of the Devil’s Advocate’s, John Milton or Scandals Cyrus Beene. Both characters are ruthless and manipulative when it comes to getting what they want. Al Pacino, as John Milton and or Satan in the movie’s last line is; “

Vanity, definitely my favorite sin.” In last weeks episode of Scandal, Jeff Perry, who plays Cyrus Beene manipulated Francisco Vargus into running for President of the United States. That is exactly what Myers does and

has accomplished He played on our African American females vanity and manipulated them into running for office. If you received a phone call or had a conversation that allegedly went some

Going Through The Motions (Continued)

If you see any so-called community activists skinning and grinning and totally agreeing with the mayor or any of the city councilors about not working toward an amicable settlement of lawsuits filed by the four elected officials regarding their annual budgets, if they support once-aweek garbage pickup and another garbage fee increase, or if the activist is in agreement that the Property Tax Freeze should be thawed, that is an activist that has definitely sold out to the power structure. Disregard what the doctor, the lawyer, the preacher, the senior politicians tell you if they are not telling the truth and all that is going on. I am going to tell you the truth as I always have told you the truth about the important issues and decisions that will have a tremendous impact on the progress of the African American community in relation to the community at-large going forward. You can rest assure I will perform what I promise because you know my track record as a community activist.

Now, there are so-called wannabe recognized leaders in the African American community that will befriend and use you so that they can get in position to later work against our community rather than the overall best interest of the African American community. Go alongget along leaders playing master politicians are going to destroy the African American community. Right and wrong does not matter with them when average rank-and-file Black people have suffered injustice. You can go to some of these so-called Black leaders asking them to help you get justice or help work to implement whatever needed corrective action. What they will give you is a song, a dance, a no, and then quickly show you to the door. African Americans citizens get a whole lot of lip service and disservice in the time of need. The way things go for a lot of Black citizens, especially grassroots Black people, we would be better off with a pocket full of dirt. Are the African Americans in this city still not conscious as well as contemptuous of the people involved in politics but directly or indirectly doing absolute harm to us as a people?

Opinion/Editorial

By Brother Love, Special To The Courier

When you find a community activist more interested in gaining personal notoriety and breaking into politics than holding the power structure in government accountable for what they have failed to do to identify and address patterns and practices of discrimination in government, that is a person that will likely do us irreparable damage if we indeed elect him or her to any political office above that of dog catcher-in-chief. What type of person am I talking about? I am talking about what amounts to a crafty con man or crafty con woman simply going through the motions and putting on a show to get what they want from you and out of you, especially during this election season where we have a lot of hand-picked candidates backed by political puppet masters that are hell-bent on unseating certain Black incumbents that will not bow down as inferiors and worship at their feet. I do not have any problem whatsoever with skin color, race, or ethnicity. What I have a problem with is the motives of people that only use Black people for what they can get from us and do nothing at all for us as a community. What I am talking about is the slave master and the slave relationship. I am talking about the plantation mentality of our local politics, and even in our local government.

Any community or civil rights activist in this town worth his or her salt will tell you in straightforward fashion that our community is under attack by hungry predators lusting for political power and control. You have a master controller on the one hand and a master manipulator on the other hand. They both want to install new Black elected officials and control the politics in the Black community. The predators come as friends and a lot of Black people receive them as friends. They pretend to very concerned about the Black community. In reality they are deadly enemies to the Black community. If you intelligently press their put-up Black candidates on the issues, the seat or office, and the reasons they decided to challenge the incumbent, more than likely you will come to discover that they are no more than dupes convinced by one or the other of the predators that they have what all it takes to make fools out of

enough Black voters to get elected to public office. They do not want these dupes to serve the people. That is not it at all. What they have enlisted them to do is to "serve up" the Black community like a stuffed pig on a silver platter well-done, seasoned to taste, and a big red apple in the mouth. The false pretenders, liars, and deceivers are already out in force this political season seeking our votes and support. A few of them are definitely shady like Grady, as the saying goes. Deceitful promises and lies sound sweet to itchy ears, and make a lot of sense if you are not information wise, meaning knowledgeable about the real issues and all the real facts surrounding the issues. You must keep your wits about you and your guards up at all times as voters, as some candidates and their supporters may just tell you whatever they can imagine you might want to hear. The ones that do so are expecting you to be simpleminded enough to believe they will be champions of fairness and justice in the system when it comes to their Black constituents. Do not make the job of voters harder that it is. Incumbents have a record of service by which you can quickly and easily judge the job they are doing and have done over the years. That is a very good thing. Candidates have promises that they will do a better job if you will give them a chance. You must have the proper level of knowledge from the right informational sources to distinguish between the two which of them is the most credible and most worthy of your trust and vote. We must not allow apathy and ignorance to be the downfall of the Black community in Columbus. Be an informed voter, not a misguided, empty-headed voter that is voting for or against based on your emotions. It is not about who you like or dislike for purely personal reasons. What it is truly all about, my dear friends, is who is going to do the best job equally serving all the citizens of Columbus, Georgia irrespective of race, social status, religious, fraternal or sorority affiliation, or any such thing of the sort. Knowledge is power. I strongly urge you to be very inquisitive of the candidates and the incum-

March 17, 2016

bents, but fact check everything you are told and everything you hear from or about them be it good or bad. Do get drawn into the lies and deceit. Be wise and be circumspect. Do not give your pearls, or your vote in this case, to swine, not that I am calling the candidates or incumbents swine. Your vote and the future of our community are both very important. Just because a political candidate knocks on your door or calls you up on the telephone and asks for your vote and support does not mean that particular candidate is well-deserving of your vote and support. Talk is just words until you can show valid results. You have to do your research and conduct background checks on the applicant for the job.

Please be an informed voter and a responsible voter this election season. Show the power structure and all those that consistently work so hard to exploit our community what we are really made of as American voters. You can be sure they, just as always, will be watching and heavily betting against African Americans voting our own best interest. That is what this community activist has to tell you. Thank you for reading my incisive thoughts on the issues and the people in politics and government.

A C OURIER C ONVERSATION ...

City Council Candidate Tremaine “Teddy” Reese...At Large

This “Courier Conversation” is with Tremaine “Teddy” Reese who is a candidate for one of the At-Large Seats on the Muscogee County City Council. The seat is currently served by Skip Henderson who has held the position close to 20 years.

Courier: You are seeking a seat on city council that has been held by the incumbent for the past 20 years, what has moved you to run for the At-large seat at this time?

Reese: The people of Columbus have moved me to run for this seat. There is a frustration around this city for elected officials who take their seat for granted and retreat to only serving a certain segment of this city. People are feeling ignored and want representative government that will at least come to their neighborhoods and hear them. The mere essence of public service is one who has agreed to sacrifice time and resources to move the city forward. You can’t do that if you are not willing to give your all. My opponent said that serving on city council is “part-time.” I respectfully but directly disagree, and want to be clear that I think any form of public service is fulltime. The pay may be part-time, but the commitment must be greater and that is part of the sacrifice I am willing to make.

I run for this office with no personal agenda. Only the desire to help solve our problems and move Columbus forward. I have a Bachelors in Computer Science from Albany State University, a Master’s in Public Administration from Georgia College & State University, and a Jurist Doctorate from Florida A&M University. I am licensed to practice law in Georgia and Florida. I have a certification in Lean Six Sigma and have managed, cumulatively, over 500 people in my professional career. I have served in orga-

nizational leadership on the local, state, and national level. I graduated with the 2015 class of Leadership Georgia and have served on the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Young Professionals Board of Directors for the past two years. I am confident my skills will add a needed knowledge base to council and help make the critical decisions we will face in the near future.

Courier: Working together is important especially on the City Council because many problems exist that affect diverse groups of people with different interests. Being that it will take a majority vote in order to effect change, what experience or skill set do you possess regarding consensus building when it comes to serving the people you are seeking to represent?

Reese: I possess a very unique skillset to work well with others and establish crucial relationships. I am fortunate to say that I currently have a working relationship with many members of council. Additionally, as a former employee for the City of Atlanta and Wilkinson County, GA Government, I learned the essential skills of working within the structure of government. More importantly, I gained valuable knowledge and insight on how to get things done. On the local level, I have been successful with working with the Muscogee County Board of Education and school administrators on promoting positive school climates and reducing the number of out of school suspensions. That successful collaboration required consensus building and key leadership skills that will directly translate to city council. Additionally, I have worked with young professionals through the Chamber of Commerce to increase diversity in participation and opportunities for minority business owners. I have years of experience working with diverse groups of people locally, statewide, and nationally and I look forward to the opportunity to use those skills on city council to ensure it is more productive than ever.

Courier: What are your three main areas of concern that need to be addressed by City Council?

Reese: Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to speak with citizens all over Columbus about their concerns and receive general feedback. From those conversations

and my own concerns, I have developed the B.E.S.T. platform. Those platform points are B- Budget Control, E- Economic Development, S- Safety, and T- Together (Bringing the city Together). Budget Control- We are facing many budget woes on the city level, which is the result of bad fiscal management. My opponent has served as the Budget Review Committee Chair for City Council for many years and has been in direct control of budget operations. One serious issue is our city reserve. City Council has a policy that the city reserve should not drop below 90 days. The Government Finance Officers Association has a policy that the reserves should not drop below 60 days. In 2007, we had a 130 day city reserve. We are currently operating on a 57 day reserve. This is dangerously below recommended levels and can have devastating impacts on the city’s ability to react to financial emergencies. Additionally, our reserve is used by rating agencies to evaluate the cities creditworthiness. Future capital projects can easily result in extremely high interest rates due to a bad credit score for the city. In addition to being an attorney, I have a Master’s in Public Administration and have previous experience working with multimillion dollar budgets. It’s time we have fresh eyes working to tackle our budget issues with the city. Economic Development- This year alone we have witnessed several companies decide to close their doors and leave Columbus. The unemployment rate in the African American community is still extremely high, so we must turn to creative measures in recruiting companies to move to Columbus. According to the University of Georgia, Terry College of Business, our part of the Georgia has experienced the slowest growth and redevelopment. We missed a major opportunity when we failed to approve the TAD (Tax Allocation District) for the Liberty District and other areas that badly need redevelopment. Economic Development must become a major focus of ours in order to attract more companies and put people to work that desperately want to fill needs for their families. Safety- Do you feel safe? If you answered no, you are amongst a vast majority of the citizens I have spoken to in Columbus. However, I do not believe that we have to live in fear. We can get this crime issue under control. Our public safety officers put their lives on the line each day to uphold our laws. As your next city council member, I will work with public safety to ensure we are meeting their needs to our best

March 17, 2016

capability. I will work to help connect public safety and our community and have experience working on statewide projects doing so. This is only possible if we engage our community as elected officials. At this time, most Columbus citizens feel they have one city council representative, but in fact, everyone has three. I will be the Citywide City Council member that engages all communities and represents all people.

Courier: What is your vision for Columbus in the next 10 years?

Reese: I was mostly raised by a single mother who worked three part-time jobs to make sure I had shoes on my feet and clothes on my back. We didn’t have much but she made sure we celebrated the small things in a small way. She reminded me daily I could be anything I wanted to be in life. See, my mother had her own way of articulating the American Dream to me. She taught me that hard work, determination, self-respect, honesty, and loyalty were essential skills in life. Due to her lessons and commitment to me, I was the first in my family to go to college. I want other young minority and economically challenged kids to have the same opportunity and love that I had. I want them to enjoy a city where opportunity is available and inspiration is plentiful. I want them to know violence and crime is not the way and a good life is possible. I want parents, including single parents, to have the resources and inspiration to lift their children. That includes having access to good paying jobs. I want our communities and neighborhoods to be strong again. I want all of us to accept our role in fighting crime and keeping our streets clean. I envision a city where we are united again and Macon Rd. no longer represents the proverbial boundary of the have and the have nots. I envision a city with economic growth and development all over. It is my honor to offer my candidacy for City Council. If we want change, we must work together to make it happen. I can’t do this without you. Please help me reach this vision by casting your vote for Teddy Reese for Citywide City Council on May 24th. Also, don’t be afraid to talk to your friends and family about this election. We are at a crucial time in which we can change the course of this city. I know through God all things are possible, so please continue to pray with me through this process. May God bless the City of Columbus.

Myers From Page 5

-thing like this: “I’ve been talking to people in the community and the community is telling me wants you to serve on the school board.”

Did you: (a) Ask yourself, “Since when do I need a middle man? If my community wants me to run for the school board why would they send a white man to tell me? If they know who I am, surely “they”, (the community), have my phone number or know how to get in touch with me.”

Or (b) Did you respond with; “Wow, really, they want me? Well what do I need to do? If you responded with (A) like some individuals such as Chubby and Linda Jackson, local business owners, then you understand what he is allegedly up to and refused to be one of his puppets. If your response was (B) then you played right into his hands and became a willing participant to be used in his divide and conquer tactics.

First I hope they realized they weren’t his first choice. We understand Myers approached a number of individuals before he was able to find someone gullible enough to fall for his line. Two of those individuals, the Jacksons’, we mentioned earlier. Others include the “Brothers” he met with at El Vaqueros at Cross Country Plaza. In our next issue we will continue to “Connect The Dots” between Myers and the relationship between Shannon Smallman, Cathy Williams, Joseph Brannan.

We will also discuss School Board District 5 with Todd Robinson as the only African American running. And we will divulge who we believe is behind a former employee challenging Vivian Creighton Bishop for Clerk of Municipal Court, and Bernard Spicer’s challenge of Marshal Greg Countryman.

Finally we will attempt to find out to the bottom of what everyone is talk running for office?

He has worked as an on air personality known as Mall Doon on 98.3 the beat. Mall Doon is nickname that was given to him as a little kid living in Bellwood. Williams’s show aired every Sunday and showcased local Georgia and Alabama hip hop talents. “ I understood trying to get your music heard while not having a record deal,” shares Jamaal “so my objective was to create an opportunity for those artists to be heard hence the show called The War Zone”.

By Nadine Haralson The Courier

Filmmaker, editor, and writer Jamaal T. Williams was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia. Born in the neighborhood known as “Bellwood”, Williams’ mother was a strong, loving, and caring woman by the name of Heidi Williams. His father, Robert Williams, was a smart, handsome, street savvy pool hustler that showed Williams the evolution on becoming a man. An amateur writer as a child, Williams moved several times growing up and spent part of his youth in Atlanta. Inspired by an older cousin, Williams started off as a writer of hip-hop music.

“I can remember being in the 6th grade and seeing my older cousin getting ready to do a show and that truly inspired me to venture out and make my mark on the scene” explains Jamaal.

Jamaal, who has always used music as an emotional outlet says, the rhythm of the music is relaxing to the soul, and he uses it as therapy. Williams

Jamaal attended Columbus Technical College and was the President of the Phi Beta Lambda fraternity. He explains that he was prompted to launch his production company, “Inspired Visionary Production” after being given a class project.

William’s, who works for the City Managers office, is also an independent wedding videograhper, and a part time camera operator and editor for CCG TV under program director Mike King.

Ware.

“ I understand in life you don’t have to conform to the norm. Follow your creativity and nourish it. In the bible it says “ A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men” expresses Jamaal.

Courier: You are considered a product of the “Millennial Generation” or “Generation Next”, those individuals born between 1980(81) to 2000. One of the traits of your generation is that you are civic-minded with a strong sense of community both local and global. Although the majority of registered voters in Muscogee County is majority African American we know that far few of us actually exercise that right to vote. What efforts are you taking to mobilize that “Generation Next”? Reese: This will be a very special and exciting year for our city due to the fact that five people under the age of 35 are running for office. I’m very excited to see that my generation is ready to take on leadership roles. However, we must pause to say “Thank You” to many leaders who have come before us. It is very clear to me that I stand on the

shoulders of giants like Congressman Sanford Bishop Jr., Rep. Calvin Smyre, Rep. Carolyn Hugley, Sen. Ed Harbison, Tax Commissioner Lula Huff, and past councilman A.J. McClung. They led the way so that a young leader like myself can now pick up the baton and run the next leg of this race. It is my hope that our generation will get excited about our presence and naturally gravitate to this process. We are working social media extensively and frequenting events for young professionals. Even though I highlighted those efforts, we want everyone to know that we are seeking support from everyone. It is my desire to be the Citywide City Councilman that represents all people and all ages. Most of my wisdom has come from my grandmother and late great uncle and I can never repay them for the love and nourishment shown to me as a young man. We must listen to our elders to understand our past, and only then will we know how to direct our future.
