The Voters Have Spoken

According to the street committee Retired Army Col. John House will take the citywide seat that was vacated by Mayor-elect Skip Henderson. Henderson ran for mayor and won outright in the May election. House, 64 collected 4,898 votes or 56% to his opponent, Amy Bryan’s 3,852 votes or 44%. Bryan, who was a political newcomer and executive with the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce, beat House by 1600 votes in the May election but it was not enough to prevent

a runoff. Retired Muscogee County School District teacher Mike Edmondson will replace John Thomas seat on the nine-member Muscogee County school Board. Edmondson beat Kar-Tunes Car Stereo owner Bart Steed 60 percent to 40 percent, 1,450980 votes, in the lone runoff election this year. Edmondson, 63, the 1990 MCSD Teacher of the Year, taught Advanced Placement chemistry and physics in MCSD for 33 years, with stints at Spencer, Hardaway and Northside high schools.

Are Your Potato’s Heavy

“…Father forgive them for they know not what they do” Luke 23:34

As I recently reflected on the words uttered by Jesus as they cast lots, dividing up His garments among them, I couldn’t help but wonder if it were me, would I have been able to say I forgive.

In spite of all the sermons I’ve heard over the years, the messages explaining how “”when you fail to forgive you are just giving the other person power over your life” etc., there are still some things I just can’t seem to draw myself to let go of. If I’m honest with myself I really feel bad about that, because deep down inside I ought to know better, especially given what the Lord has done for me. But, I guess that is one thing comedian Steve Harvey and I have in common, He ain’t done with me yet. I’m a work in progress. There is a story, however, I read recently that has me rethinking my thought on the subject. Here it is. Perhaps we all can benefit from it. A teacher once told each of her

3

students to bring a clear plastic bag and a sack of potatoes to school. She instructed them, for every person they refuse to forgive in their life's experience, they choose a potato, write on it the name and date, and put it in the plastic bag. Some of their bags were quite heavy.

They were then told to carry this bag with them everywhere for one week, putting it beside their bed at night, on the car seat when driving, next to their desk at work. The hassle of lugging this around with them made it clear what a weight they were carrying spiritually, and how they had to pay attention to it all the time to not forget and keep leaving it in embarrassing places.

Naturally, the condition of the potatoes deteriorated to a nasty smelly slime. This was a great metaphor for the price we pay for keeping our pain and heavy negativity! Too often we think of forgiveness as a gift to the other person, and it clearly is for ourselves! I’m working on my bag. Are your potato’s heavy?
