Dear Political Candidates Who Happen To Be White: For future references do not, I repeat, do not discount the importance, the significance and the value the Black church has in the Black community. You can listen to your Black friends who have chosen to abandon their roots to join your White church if you want to, you will be making a big mistake. According to the street committee some of the candidates, either by design or ignorance, chose not to meet with the IMA (International Ministerial Alliance). To be fair, given the behavior of some Black pastors and church members, it is understandable that some Blacks have less than a positive respect for the Black church. However, you still have to believe that it is not fair to lump all of the pastors in the same pile because of the indiscretions of a few. In spite of that the local Black church still remains important I should not be ignored. Just a word to the wise.

The Street Committee

Really Mr. Officer? You Are Giving Me A Ticket For What? The street committee was called about an incident over the Memorial Day weekend where a Columbus Police officer, Badge #100, stopped an individual an issued them a two tickets. One because she didn’t have her lights on (clearly, as the picture on facebook showed, it was not dark outside) and the second one was because she didn’t show him her driver’s license in time. Yes you heard right. He asked her for her driver’s license and nervous, she couldn’t find it immediately in her purse. He took her name and address and when he came back to the car she showed him her license. He told her it was too late. The street committee made a call to the Chief of police Ricky Boren on last Tuesday to discuss the situation: he has yet to respond. In the meantime it’s a good thing Pam Dixon, air personality with WEAM Praise 100 is a Christian women,

Pray for her anyway. By the way the police offer, Badge #100 is Black.

A VIEW FROM A PEW

THURSDAY JUNE 2, 2018

Things I’ve Learned... I’ve learned - that you can get by on charm for about fifteen minutes. After that, you’d better know something. I’ve learned - that you shouldn’t compare yourself to the best others can do. I’ve learned - that you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

I’ve learned - that it’s taking me a long time to become the person I want to be. I’ve learned - that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

I’ve learned - that you can keep going long after you can’t. I’ve learned - that we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel. I’ve learned - that either you control your attitude or it controls you.

From time to time I read something on the Internet that moves me. Not long ago I came across a piece that is attributed to Omar B. Washington. Now I don’t know who Omar is but his article entitled, “I Have Learned”, made me reflect on what I have learned over the years. Here is his list along with some of my own.

I’ve learned - that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is be someone who can be loved. The rest is up to them.

I’ve learned - that no matter how much I care, some peo-

ple just don’t care back.

I’ve learned - that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it.

I’ve learned - that no matter how good a friend is, they’re going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.

I’ve learned - that it’s not what you have in your life but who you have in your life that counts.

I’ve learned - that you should never ruin an apology with an excuse.

I’ve learned - that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades and there had better be something else to take its place.

I’ve learned - that heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences. I’ve learned - that money is a lousy way of keeping score.

I’ve learned - that my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time. I’ve learned - that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you’re down will be the ones to help you get back up.

I’ve learned - that sometimes when I’m angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn’t give me the right to be cruel. I’ve learned - that true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love. I’ve learned - that just because someone doesn’t love you the way you want them to doesn’t mean they don’t love you with all they have.

I’ve learned - that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you’ve had and what you’ve learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you’ve celebrated.

I’ve learned - that you should never tell a child their dreams are unlikely or outlandish. Few things are more humiliating, and what a tragedy it would be if they believed it. I’ve learned - that your family won’t always be there for you. It may seem funny, but people you aren’t related to can take care of you and love you and teach you to trust people again. Families aren’t biological. I’ve learned - that it isn’t always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you are to learn to forgive yourself.

I’ve learned - that no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn’t stop for your grief.

I’ve learned - that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

I’ve learned - that a rich person is not the one who has the most, but is one who needs

3

the least.

I’ve learned - that just because two people argue, it doesn’t mean they don’t love each other. And just because they don’t argue, it doesn’t mean they do. I’ve learned - that we don’t have to change friends if we understand that friends change. I’ve learned - that you shouldn’t be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever.

I’ve learned - that two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.

I’ve learned - that no matter how you try to protect your children, they will eventually get hurt and you will hurt in the process. I’ve learned - that even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help.

I’ve learned - that credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being. I’ve learned - that the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon.

I’ve learned - that it’s hard to determine where to draw the line between being nice and not hurting people’s feelings, and standing up for what you believe. I’ve learned - that people will forget what you said, and people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. What have you learned?

She became the Director of the Aaron Cohn Regional Youth Detention Center (Level 5 Security facility for youth) in 2004 responsible for managing 80+ incarcerated juveniles with charges from Runaway to Murder, 60+ Juvenile Correctional Officers as well as supervision of 30+ civilian workers.

Mrs. Glover retired from the Department of Juvenile Justice in 2013 after 28 years.

By Wane A. Hailes The Courier

Shasta Glover took over the position as Clerk of Superior Court after the untimely passing of Ann Hardman. We recently spoke with her about the transition. The following is that conversation.

Her History

Shasta Glover, a native of Columbus, Georgia is on a passionate mission to continue the advancement of the Muscogee County Clerk of Superior Court Office as well as the community with unique ability to lead and guide others.

She started her governmental career in law enforcement as a Patrol Officer with the Columbus Police Department in 1983 working her way through the department from Patrol, Motor Squad, Crime Prevention/Community Relations, even-

tually being promoted to the Detective Division for Youth Services and Sex Crimes.

Resigning in 1994 Glover went to work for the Juvenile Court as an Intake Worker under the infamous Judge Aaron Cohn. In 1997, she was employed by the State of Georgia with the Department of Juvenile Justice as the Juvenile Detention Counselor. It was while, in this capacity, she was offered a contractual position with one of television’s most popular judges, Judge Glenda Hatchett (who specialized in assisting troubled youth). She worked with Judge Hatchett as a consultant for troubled girls.

In 2004, she became Assistant Director of the Aaron Cohn Regional Youth Detention Center and three years later she was promoted to Multi-Service Center Manager where she supervised

The Conversation The Courier: On March 19th of this year, with the passing of Ann Hardman, you were thrust into the leadership role as the Superior Court Clerk. What was that experience like? Glover: Although the passing of Mrs. Hardman was emotionally difficult because she was my Pastor (22 years) and friend. However, assuming the role of the Superior Court Clerk was not difficult. I had been in a Leadership/Management role from my past profession and positions so I was comfortable with the shift as well as the responsibilities that this role entails. We (Mrs. Hardman and I) communicated on a daily basis of what the vision was and what she needed me to do to assist her in fulfilling the task. The Courier: Working as her deputy how prepared were you to step into the position? Glover: I have management and leadership skills that prepared me for the position. I basically ran the day to day operations in the office so therefore, I knew a lot of the language, laws, procedures, etc. The Courier: What are some of the changes

PAGE 5

that have been implemented during the past 15 months? Glover: Some of the improvements that we have made in the office are as follows: THE MORALE IN THE OFFICE IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT (you hear laughter, employees are exhibiting good Customer Service internally as well as externally), employees have new desks, scanners, printers, attorneys have capabilities to electronically file court documents anytime, anywhere with eFileGA ( the benefits include reduced average filing time, the elimination of costly trips to the courthouse. We now provide additional payment options for the community and are no longer cash only. We have also installed more panic buttons in different departments for security reasons. The Courier: What would you like the community to know about your department? Glover: The Superior Court Clerk’s office is located on the 2nd floor of the Government Center, our hours of operation is 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. We stand ready to assist the public in any way that we can and we strive for excellence on a daily basis.

Just Like The Movie, George McDonald aka G-Smoove, Is “Strictly Business” worked for the government. Because he worked on airplanes he was assigned to RAF Mildenhall the Royal Air Force Station. When they came back to the states they moved here in 1991. In 1995 they moved to Atlanta where he lived for the next twenty years.

This is the part where he reminds me of the “Halloran Brothers”. If you didn’t ask him you would never know that “G-Smoove” is a graduate of Morris Brown College with a degree in Mass Media and Arts with a concentration in film. He began his career at V103 in Atlanta as a producer while he was still in college. Many may not realize that this is his second stint with Davis Broadcasting, Inc. In 1995 George came back to Columbus and began working on FOXIE 105. He left after two years moving back to Atlanta to teach “Broadcast Video Production at DeKalb High School of Technology. He also taught at Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Georgia where one of his students was Deshaun Watson the current quarterback with the Houston Texans.

were introduced to, and fell in love with Halle Berry as Natalie (before we realized she has some issues).

The movie is about a successful investment broker who risks his career, fiancé and possessions when he becomes infatuated with a club promoter who finds him staid and boring. With the aid of a mailroom clerk at his firm, he gets a crash course in the wilder side of life to help him meet the woman. The movie stared Tommy Davidson and it was also the first time most men

Those who are close to me know that I consider myself somewhat of a movie aficionado. During my interview with George McDonald aka G-Smoove host of the G-Smoove Experience Sunday through Friday, 7pm – midnight on K92.7 I found myself thinking of the movie “Strictly Business”.

The reason I thought of this movie is not for any of the above but if you have seen the movie then you will understand when I say that I equate “G-Smoove” with the characters portrayed as the Halloran Brothers. McDonald is a perfect example of why you should “never judge a book by its cover.” “G-Smoove” is one of those unassuming individuals who shows up everyday who works hard to bring his listeners a musical experience.

In 2014 McDonald returned to Davis Broadcasting, Inc. as the producer of the Tom Joyner Morning Show and when an opening became available for his current slot he was ready to step in.

“I believe sometimes you have to “wait your turn” but when opportunity knocks you have to be ready, says McDonald, It knocked, I opened up the door and here I am.”

What people do not know is that his uncle is the late legendary music executive Gene Griffin who is perhaps best known for his involvement in G.R. Productions (Gene-Riley Productions) which included music by Guy, Wrecks N Effect, Keith Sweat, Bobby Brown, Boy George, Heavy D and others. He doesn’t like to talk about that because many people will assume that’s the only way he got into the business. The truth is “a name” may get you in the door, but unless you have the talent or work hard you won’t stay in. “I believe, and am proof that “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.

And work hard he does. As I stated earlier you should never judge a book by its cover. G-Smoove is a singer, songwriter and a screenwriter who just shot a movie in March of this year called, “Last Night A DJ Saved my Life.” It’s a full-length movie shot in Atlanta that stars Angie Stone, Omar Gooding and Jasmine Burks from “Saints and Sinners” and others. He wrote the script about his experience in the radio business. It is currently in pre-production where they are working on the soundtrack. When asked why he doesn’t share this information with others he said, “I’m not that way. Experience has taught me to believe “When you wait and don’t rush things, God will place you in position and there is nothing that will get in your way. I’m just living life to the fullest.”
