You Might Not Want To Attend An HBCU Classic Reunion If You Are A Jealous “Significant Other” touch someone gives you. Oh, they won’t say anything right then, but you can rest assured it’s coming. It might be by the silent treatment you receive in your car all the way back to the hotel. You ask them; “what’s wrong” and their only response is “nothing”. You’ve made plans earlier to attend the after party but all of a sudden they don’t want to go. Confused, you ask, “Why”, and after an hour going back and forth with, “I just don’t feel well” or “Don’t worry about me go be with your friends, I’ll be ok watching TV”. Then it finally comes out; “You don’t really want me to go anyway. Why don’t you go be with that “%$#@” you was all hugged up on?” Not only do you miss the after party, you don’t get any sleep because you have been up all night trying to convince your significant other that you did not sleep with every person that spoke to you during the day. The next morning, your friends are asking you where you were and how you guys missed a great party. You feel compelled to make up a lie about how they got sick from something they ate and that you guys are going to be heading back early. Last week I celebrated a significant milestone. It was 28 years ago, Wednesday October 5, 1990 when I arrived in Columbus as the Director of the A.J. McClung YMCA.

The atmosphere and the energy in the city at the time were at an all time high due to the Tuskegee Morehouse football Classic, “The Granddaddy Of Them All” which was scheduled for that Friday. Today, in addition to Tuskegee vs. Morehouse two additional HBCU classics are held in the

Tri-City: White Water and the Fountain City Classics.

Coming to the “Classics” each year is a fun event, especially if you attended one of the historically Black instututions. It is an opportunity to reacquaint your self with college friends and reminisce about old times. That is great for you but not so much for your spouse or significant other who did not attend school with you and may be meeting your friends for the first time.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that to avoid embarrassment and otherwise awkward moments that it might be best if you come by your self. This is of course if you want to have a good time with your friends without constantly being accused of having slept with every person who hugs you or holds you just a little too long for your significant others taste. For the record they will be watching every move you make and how you respond to every

On the ride back home of you are mad as hell the reunion, which was posed to be a fun-filled away, was a bust.

both and supget-

Sadly the same thing would have happened if you had attended your significant others reunion. And that is why I recommend that if you wish to “save your “relationship” don’t go. Just because they see an “old flame” doesn’t mean they are going to try and hook up with them. Truth be told, time isn’t good to everybody and

nine times out of ten you end up counting your blessings that you “escaped a bullet” because what they look like now is far, far from what they looked like then.

Even if your spouse was on the cheerleading squad or a majorette with the marching band you rarely have anything to worry about. True, they were probably extremely popular but that doesn’t mean they were “loose”. It could be they were just fun to be around. Of course there will always be that one person who thinks they are Tyrone Davis and spends the entire weekend, trying to; “Turn Back The Hands of Time”. They were fine back in the day but now they are 5’5” at least 300lbs walking with a cane and pulling an oxygen tank behind them. Be up front though. Brothers don’t be slick by suggesting your wife stay home and take care of the kids. Your feelings will be real hurt if they come back talking about how they had a great time staying with Auntie Cheryl watching TV and eating ice cream and cake while mommy went out. Now you are mad because neither you nor your wife has any relatives named Cheryl.

The bottom line, your significant other deserves to go to a reunion weekend without having to answer ridiculous questions or being accused of things they couldn’t do at age 22 let alone 62. If you know you are prone to jealous rages and making a mountain out of a molehill do yourself a favor and stay home. Life is too short. And by the way, to those who are attending, a word to the wise: turn of your facebook locater. I’m just saying!

The Legacy Continues...The Sons of Dr. Malone, Dr. McRae and Dr Chambers Come Home to Join Their Father’s Practice

There is no success without succession. Periodically we take opportunity to introduce to the community those family owned businesses who, contrary to many, have made or are making a concerted effort to insure generational wealth. Succession needs to be planned so that relationships can be properly transitioned and new roles can be properly learned. Effective succession should be a regular and ongoing process not a “life event” that occurs once every generation or when somebody dies. In Columbus, there are three fathers who are all doctors of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Unbeknownst to many all three have sons who have joined them in their practices. On the following pages we introduce you to father and son, MD.

Dr. Thomas N. Malone, MD and Dr. Michael Malone, MD Obstetrics and Gynecology Spend five minutes with Dr. Thomas N. Malone and you will realize he is a treasure trove of information. Today he is the longest serving Black doctor in Muscogee County. By mentoring and assisting young doctors who come to the city he continues to “pay it forward” as his mentor, Dr. M. Delmar Edwards did for him when he first arrived. Originally from Montgomery, Alabama he grew up attending rallies where he listened firsthand to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He knew Ralph David Abernathy before he became involved with King and the civil rights movement. His family lived so close to King’s that when his home was bombed some of the windows in the Malone home were blown out as well. As a veteran he did his residency in the Army and arrived as a doctor at Ft. Benning in 1977.

“My intention was to go back to Montgomery and open up my practice, said Malone. When I sought out Black doctors in the city I met Dr. Delmar Edwards and found that he was the only Black doctor in Muscogee County. He convinced me to stay and really mentored me along the way. I started my practice in 1978 and became the second black doctor in Muscogee County and the only Obstetrician.” Dr. Malone tells the story of the day he met Dr. Edwards. “I went by his office, which was located on 8th and 4th Avenue

to introduce myself. At the time Dr. Bob Wright was also working out of the same building with his Optometry practice. When I walked into his office the waiting room was packed with men and women. He was as busy as he could be but we hit it off instantly. He put a white coat on me and took me back to the waiting room and said, “Tom, you see all of those ladies out there? You’re going to see them today. And I did. He and his wife became my family’s best friends. He pointed me in the right direction for a lot of things.” His son, Dr. Michael Malone joined the practice thirteen years ago. Like his father he has a passion for providing quality healthcare to his patients and educating them on the importance of pre-natal care.

“This is a calling for me, a career path that began when as a child my dad would take me on his rounds here in Columbus and Tuskegee. I am one of the lucky ones who are able to work with their dad in the same profession. I will never know everything he does but everyday is an opportunity to learn just a little bit more.” In addition to Columbus the Malone’s also serve patients in Russell County and Eufaula” Malone Obstetrics & Gynecology 2039 10th Avenue Columbus, Georgia 706.324.2485

PAGE 8

Dr. Sylvester McRae, MD and Dr. Kevin J. McRae, MD Obstetrics and Gynecology For Dr. Sylvester McRae “being the best you can be and make an honest living” were words that were instilled in him and his siblings growing up in Telfair County, South Carolina. “I will always remember my father making us pick cotton, watermelon and do construction work. He wanted us to know what life would be like if we chose not to further our education. He didn’t have us do that because it was a bad thing but regardless all of us ended up attending Ft. Valley University. My oldest sister was an educator with a Doctorate in Education and my older brother is a dentist. He was one of the first African American to be accepted into the Dental School of the Medical College of Georgia.” McRae, who attended the Medical College of Georgia and completed his residency there as well, came to Columbus in 1985. To say he is excited about his son returning to work alongside him is an understatement. “I always believed he would return to Columbus and we would have the opportunity to work together. As I consider retirement eventually, it is a comforting feeling that the family legacy will continue.” Of the three sons to join their father’s practice Dr. Kevin McRae is the most recent. A 1999 graduate of Columbus High School he completed his under-

graduate studies at Hampton University and attended medical school at St. Mathews University School of Medicine Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. He completed his residency at Meharry Medical College in July of this year and officially joined his father in practice on September 17, 2018.

The young McRae always knew he wanted to go into medicine and always knew he wanted to do something with a surgical background.“ “All of us, my siblings and I, were exposed to my dads work when we were growing up. Unlike them I always enjoyed shadowing him every chance I got and I enjoyed science. I really hadn’t planned to go into Obstetrics and Gynecology but as my training progressed I naturally gravitated toward OB. When that happened it only felt natural to come back home to the community I love and under the guidance of my father.” St. Francis OB/GYN Physician Partners 2300 Manchester Expy. Dr. Crandall Chambers, MD and Dr. Wesley Chambers, MD Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Crandall Chambers, originally from Annapolis, Maryland, is a graduate of Morehouse College and Meharry Medical College. He came to the area in 1997 under a three-year contract with Phenix Regional Hospital. In 2000 Dr. Curtis Fleming, who was in failing health, approached him with an opportunity to purchase his practice. “It was perfect timing, says Chambers, because my contract was ending with the hospital and I was contemplating my next move.”

Chambers wife, an attorney, is a graduate of Emory University and George Washington Law School. She is from LaGrange and the reason they moved to this area. They have three children two daughters and a son. Both daughters are Spelman graduates. One is an attorney practicing in Los Angeles, California and the other is an obstetrician gynecologist who is currently at Baylor doing a two-year fellowship in pediatric and adolescent gynecology. His son, Dr. Wesley Chambers, the oldest, also went to Morehouse. He attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham for medical school and the University of South Alabama for his residency. When asked what is like working alongside his son he had this story to share.

“It’s a surreal kind of experience to practice with your son. You go from disciplining him to now, having to view him from a different lens. When he came to the practice initially my wife reminded me that I have to take off my “Dad” hat and put on my “Colleague” hat because the way I was talking to him was father to son.

It helped me a lot because I had to realize he was now my equal. That was the first time being placed in that position and that was hard to do. But it made me put things in perspective and I realized I had to adjust my tone in regards to how I communicate with him. I think we are “jelling” pretty well. I still have to put on my “Dad” hat every once in a while but it’s working.

Surprisingly the son, Dr. Wesley Chambers is Chairman of the hospitals Department of OB/GYN, who now signs the letters that come to the father, Dr. Crandall Chambers.

Wesley always considered joining his father’s practice. “It was always an option for me when I finished my residency, to come back home and furthering my career. With two small children it is also helpful to have that extra family support. The fact that my father had built a very busy practice helped influence my decision as well.” When asked, as a young OB/GYN doctor what concerns him most regarding female patients he shared his major concern.

“I think women need to be further educated about reproductive health issues. Most patients come in for simple things like annual exams or a Pap smear and they don’t really know what the Pap smear is for. Because of this a big part of what we do is educate our patients about their bodies and their health ingeneral.” Chambers & Chambers MD 811 22nd St Columbus, GA 31904 (706) 323-1054

Voting By Mail is Safe, Easy, and Critical for Our Community Vote for Stacey Abrams and vote early — by mail or in person. Because Botham, Trayvon, and Tamir can’t speak for themselves.

By: Ben Crump

A child walks home from a convenience store holding a bag of skittles, minding his own business. A self-appointed police wannabe decides to chase after him.

A bullet ensures that child doesn’t make it home – ever again. George Zimmerman, the self-appointed police wannabe, makes it home that same night. And he makes it home every night after that, except for the nights he gets arrested for felony aggravated assault, domestic violence, stalking, and criminal mischief. Trayvon Martin was not nearly his last victim, but Zimmerman somehow still walks a free man.

Six years and countless Michael Browns, Tamir Rices, and Botham Jeans later, the whole system is still guilty as ever — run, in many cases, by shameless architects of mass voter suppression. The state officials who allow young, unarmed black men to be gunned down without consequence often remain in power because they obstruct justice-seeking black and brown folks from voting.

That’s why this year more than ever, we need you to vote — especially early by mail. Any registered voter can submit an Absentee Ballot Application to your local County Board of Registrar's Office via email, fax or in person. Voting by mail before Election Day is not only simple, it’s the key to ensure that the full scope of our power is felt in this election cycle. It’s time to hold leadership accountable for their actions and make our voices heard.

Governors’ decisions matter. Their leadership affects our communities, in many ways, more than the president’s. I believe that the voters of Georgia understand that, and it is why I am so confident that my friend Stacey Abrams will be elected as your next governor. While Brian Kemp has engaged in attempted voter suppression — trying to close seven of the nine polling centers in a majority black county in South Georgia — Abrams has empowered all Georgians to get out and vote for a better state and a better future.

So, take advantage of this right and vote early. Voting by mail — as early as September 18 — is simple, and it forms a paper trail. If the need presents itself, your vote can be verified by the paper record that a mail-in vote creates. This election, cast your ballot for Botham. Cast it for Trayvon. Cast it for Tamir and Michael and Philando. Cast it for Stacey Abrams for governor, who always has and always will be our champion. And tell your friends, your neighbors, your community that you’re voting early this election for Stacey Abrams

to ensure that your voice is heard and your power is felt.

D.A. McBride’s Millennial Microphone

I Often hear people from the Baby Boomer generation or older complain about the Millennial as a Generation. I've even heard of us referred to as the "lost Generation". Well, I, as a card-carrying member of the millennial generation am here to say; we are not LOST'. We (millennial's) know where we are and we know where we want to be; but, as far as direction on how to get there, we may need to be rerouted at times. However I assure you we are not lost.

Tuesday, September 25, 2018 I had the amazing experience to hear "The Voice of young America" speak at the Columbus State University Elizabeth Bradley Turner Center. The moniker "Voice of Young America" was bestowed upon him by his teen group at Faith Worship Center. The audience was a group of freshman and sophomore High School Students from the tri-city area, sponsored by Gear Up Georgia, the African American Male Institute (AAMI), and local community leaders/ volunteers.

He (The Voice of Young America) started with a profound statement: "I am ..." With that open-ended statement, he went on to say "I am a typical black male statistic." In full transparency, he went over his personal story and how he is a typical black male statistic in ways that leaves lasting effects on our millennial generation. After running through a list of statistics and expressing his expertise as a {googleologist}, he expounded on the process it takes to create a diamond. The time, the pressure, the heat and most importantly the process it takes to become coal before it can even turn into a diamond. We as Millennials understand the generations that came before us.

The generations that sacrificed and died for us to have the opportunities that were unimaginable over 100 years ago. So realize, we're not Lost; but we're at a cross road of untapped opportunity desiring to make the right choice, right decision, and choose the right direction for our future and for our legacy. The "Voice of Young America" goes on to ask the students "Do you know your worth?" Between all of his ups and downs in life, he stated at the age of 23 he finally realized his worth. The value in knowing your worth and that you are here for a defined reason is worth more than any materials in life. He spoke about teaching his six year old son the value of legacy. How each generation must meet and or surpass the previous generation to keep the family legacy moving forward.

As a "lost generation" the most important statistic, fact, or whatever you want to call it, is knowing our worth as a Generation. Though we all maybe searching for direction in different ways, I repeat once again, "We are not LOST!" We know who we are and more importantly we know our worth. Minister DeMarcus Smith is truly "The Voice of Young America" and his message through transparency is showing all Millennials what our true worth is.

Youth Orchestra Kicks Off 25th Season With Unique Performance

The Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus (YOGC) will open its 25th season on October 30th, 2018, with a performance that has never been tried before. Talented young instrumentalists will be joined onstage by Voices of the Valley Children’s Choir and dancers from the Columbus Ballet. All three groups will perform separately before performing a finale with members from all three organizations on stage at the same time. This unique collaboration exposes both the performers and their families to different artistic disciplines and challenges these students to work and accommodate performers with different backgrounds, perspectives, and needs.

YOGC consists of musicians 8-18, with a mission to provide enhanced musical experiences above and beyond what they may be getting in their school orchestras. There are two separate large groups that perform under the YOGC umbrella, as well as smaller chamber groups. The String Orchestra is composed of younger string players who play instruments such as the violin, viola, cello, and bass. The Youth Symphony Orchestra is made up of intermediate and advanced string players, and adds brass, wind and percussion instruments to create a fuller sound and expand the repertoire opportunities. More than 100 students from over 20 area public, private and home schools participate in the combined orchestras.

Mariana Lopez-Ruiz is a junior at Columbus High School and a violinist in the YOGC, joining the String Orchestra while in middle school. She still remembers how intimidated she felt as a new YOGC member, being challenged by the difficulty of the musical repertoire. Musical Director and

Conductor Jim Palmer, as well as older and more experienced musicians, welcomed her and helped Mariana to feel more at ease.

“I am so glad I decided to join YOGC because I have a great time and it has made me a better musician. I am pushed more than in school orchestra, for the repertoire is more difficult and we focus on phrasing, dynamics, balance, technique, and many other polishing details rather than notes. ...It is evident how YOGC helps students improve because they are always the ones who sit in the front chairs for their school orchestra and some make All-State, a difficult competition.” The YOGC 25th Season Opening Concert is Tuesday, October 30th, 2018 at 7:30p. This unique performance in partnership will be in Bill Heard Theatre of RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the RiverCenter box office.

(StatePoint) Mochila y suministros-- ¡listos!
