Local NAACP Board Special Election Date Set According to the street committee the date of the special election to replace the current officers has been set for S a t u r d a y September 8, 2018. Due to chronic infighting among the Columbus branch member, the NAACP national board had ordered the Columbus branch officers to vacate their positions July 18, 2018. National board member James Gallman who has

The Street Committee

been tasked as the administrator overlooking the branch said; “We’ve gotten several complaints about the confusion that’s going on in the community,” Gallman, an executive committee member and assistant treasurer for the NAACP branch in Aiken, S.C., said of the situation in Columbus. “There are a lot of people who have refused to support the branch. When you are a community-based organization and you don’t have the support of the community, it has to do with the leadership, and it’s time to get different leadership.” According to the National Board none of the current officers can run for re-election.

A VIEW FROM A PEW

THURSDAY JULY 19, 2018

What If You Don’t Wake Up? I heard this song by Harry Chapin the other day and it made me stop and think of my son. “My child arrived just the other day He came to the world in the usual way but there were planes to catch and bills to pay He learned to walk while I was away and he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew He'd say "I'm gonna be like you dad you know I'm gonna be like you

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon Little boy blue and the man on the moon. When you comin' home dad? I don't know when, but we'll get together then son You know we'll have a good time then. My son turned ten just the other day He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play. Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today I gotta lot to do", he said, "That's ok" and he walked away but his smile never dimmed and said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah You know I'm gonna be like him" Well, he came home from college just the other day so much like a man I just had to say, "Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?" He shook his head and said with a smile "What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys see you later, can I have them please?"

I've long since retired, my son's moved away I called him up just the other day I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind" He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time. You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu but it's sure nice talking to you, Dad, it's been sure nice talking to you". And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me he'd grown up just like me, my boy was just like me.

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon little boy blue and the man on the moon. When you comin' home son? I don't know when, but we'll get together then son You know we'll have a good time then.”

How many of us spend all of our time living to work instead of working to live never taking time to enjoy life and those who are most important to you? Here is a story that might help put it in perspective.

Their father was a hardworking man who delivered bread as a living to support his wife and three children. He spent all his evenings after work attending classes, hoping to improve himself so that he could one day find a better paying job. Except for Sundays, he hardly ate a meal together with his family. He worked and studied very hard because he wanted to provide his family with the best money could buy. Whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

The day came when the examination results were announced. To his joy, he passed, and with distinctions too! Soon after, he was offered a good job as a senior supervisor, which paid handsomely. Like a dream come true, he could now afford to provide his family with life’s little luxuries like nice clothing, fine food and vacation abroad. However, the family still did not get to see father for most of the week. He continued to work very hard, hoping to be promoted to the position of manager. In fact, to make himself a worthy candi-

3

date for the promotion, he enrolled for another course.

Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

Finally his hard work paid off and he was promoted. Jubilantly, he decided to hire a maid to relieve his wife from her domestic tasks. He also felt that their three room flat was no longer big enough, it would be nice for his family to be able to enjoy the facilities and comfort of a condominium. Having experienced the rewards of his hard work many times before, he resolved to further his studies and work at being promoted again. The family still did not get to see much of him. In fact, sometimes he had to work on Sundays entertaining clients. Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with them. As expected, his hard work paid off again and he bought a beautiful condominium overlooking the coast of Singapore. On the first Sunday evening at their new home, he declared to his family that he decided not to take any more courses or pursue any more promotions. From then on he was going to devote more time to his family. He did not wake up the next day. We all get busy and take what’s really important for granted. What if you don’t wake up?

Brookstone Senior Interns With Artist Amy Sherald

By Wane A. Hailes The Courier

Most of us are familiar with the expression; “You never know unless you ask”, well Princess Ali, a rising senior at Brookstone High School is a perfect example of an individual who did just that. She met Amy Sherald, the Columbus, Georgia native and artist of the Official Portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama at an event at the Columbus Museum.

“After her presentation I had an opportunity to meet with her and share with her my deep passion for art and my dream of one day having a career as an artist.”

“As a part of our studies at Brookstone, all seniors are required to participate in the Deliberate Life Program, which asks that each student create a meaningful experience of his or her choosing. The program, which culminates in a public speech, requires that each student engage actively in the endeavor, find a community mentor to oversee the experience, and defend the purpose and content of the experience before a committee of faculty and outside professionals. “On the suggestion of one of my teachers I contacted Ms. Sherald, reminded

her of our conversation, and asked if she would mentor me. The next thing I know, after coordinating our schedules, I was in Baltimore, Maryland spending two weeks working with her in her studio from 8am to around 9pm each night. Those are two weeks I will always treasure.” “You would think someone as renowned as her would be unapproachable but she was just the opposite. She was so down to earth and very calm. What I appreciated most was how informative and insightful she was about art and her willingness to share it all with me.

Artistically she is most influenced by the Dutch Post Impressionist painter Vincent William van Gogh.

“I relate to Vincent Van Gogh because, like him, I like to use bold and vibrant colors and paint what makes me happy.”

When asked what she words of encouragement she would offer aspiring artist she says; “You have to just do it. Like Amy told me, you either have to go 100 or nothing.”

Princess Ali is seventeen years old and the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Bruce Gaillard
