NAACP Update According to the street committee for the first time ever there are four members of the local NAACP who have been asked to chair state committees those individuals are: Nate Sanderson, Katrina Drakes, Rasheeda Ali and Barbara Pierce. These appointments come after a somewhat acrimonious two months.

It’s Time For A Plaque And a Thank You For Your Service Although the street committee understands the need and even the importance of staying busy and or staying involved we also believe there comes a time when individuals must realize their time has come to sit down. When they don’t or refuse to accept the fact that it is time to go then, and we mean no disrespect, it is incumbent upon the organization to step in and

The Street Committee

offer the person or persons a nice plaque and a heartfelt “On behalf of the community thank you for your years of service”. We hope that the NAACP sees fit to provide such an opportunity to recognize one of their own at their next annual event. It’s Official After months of speculation the street committee can say that incumbent Evelyn “Mimi” Woodson will seek reelection as the city council District 7 representative. Woodson has served for the past 23 years. In making her announcement she said, “With God’s blessings and tremendous support from the amazing residents of District 7, I have served the citizens of District 7 with the greatest honor, truthfulness and loyalty....I humbly offer my service, consistency and experience.”

A VIEW FROM A PEW

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 15, 2018

Wow! I Had No Idea How Many Local Trump Supporters Are “Walking Around In Good Folks Clothes”

I believe everyone has the right to his or her opinion Facebook, however, has forever changed my opinion of many of my former white co-workers, white associates and some white leaders.

Although I can and will continue to agree to disagree without being disagreeable, as the result of their comments they have revealed their true colors.

As my grandmother would say: “There are a lot of bad, evil and dangerous people walking around in good folks clothes”

Over the past year or so I have watched with much discomfort these same “white folks” become comfortable in their anti-blackness, anti-immigrants, and in some cases anti-women. I watched them share racist right wing opinions and argue who was worthy of life and humanity. I watched them; whether it was siding with Trumps view of women, accepting Roy Moore’s refusal to take responsibility for his actions with teenage girls, or supporting the white supremacist and NeoNazi rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, devalue our lives, the lives of women and reality as

a whole.

Now that I know their ideals, their principles and their personal views it’s going to be hard for them to ever be “OK with me” again. It would be different if their comments were just an exchange of insights and they were able to agree to disagree but this has not been the case. This has been far more than just a difference in political ideology; many of their facebook posts and comments over this past year have and continue to be racist and discriminatory.

For me, as a Black man, when I hear the words, “Make America Great Again”, I believe Trump and his followers are referring to a time when “the white man was king”. This was a time before the Civil Rights Movement and a time when it was acceptable for men to chase their secretaries around their desks. The America Trump and his followers want to see again has little to do with economic policies as opposed to a time of bigoted social policies.

According to their comments many of my so-called “Facebook Friends” are fully onboard with Trump’s, “Make America Great Again” campaign and that, for me, has confirmed not only the words of my grandmother but the words of Maya Angelou as well when she said; “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time. People know themselves much better than you do. That’s why it’s important to stop expecting them to be something other than who they are”

iar with Matthew 5:39. And I suggest she do it with the quickness, because judging from her recent questionable decisions and actions, to date her short history dictates she is in for miles and miles of bad road.

By Wane A. Hailes The Courier If I didn’t know any better I would have thought the Courier Eco Latino newspaper was recently on the reality show called “PUNK’D”

It appears Muscogee County school board chairman Kia Chambers was so upset or embarrassed with an article and cartoon about her that appeared in our recent publication she personally took each and every last one of them so others would not see them. Those who witnessed the incident called her actions immature, stealing and theft of services. Here’s what happened.

It was reported to the Courier Eco Latino newspaper by individuals in attendance at the recent Muscogee County School District Board retreat, that it appeared, by her facial expression; during the session newly elected board chairman Kia Chambers received a troubling text and immediately left the session. When she

returned it was noticed she had a stack of the most recent issue of our publication dated February 1, 2018. According to those in the room she then proceeded to put all of the papers in her bag. She was also allegedly overheard demanding that the Courier no longer be allowed to be distributed in the building.

Like they say, “only a hit dog will holler” so obviously what was written had her “in her feelings.” But all I can say to Ms. Chambers is “If you can’t stand the heat, then maybe this position is not what you want.”

For the record, in case she didn’t know, she is a public figure the definition of which is: “A public figure is a person such as a politician, celebrity, or business leader, who has a certain social position within a certain scope and a significant influence and so is often widely concerned by the public, can benefit enormously from society, and is closely related to public interests in society.”

Just as an example of what we mean, by questionable actions I have included a memo, which was written by Superintendent David Lewis in regards to a called board meeting to discuss

Mark Cantrell, the newly elected vice chair voted no. Needless to say the vote failed. But yet “Kia is for the Kids”

I’m not sure if this was a “rookie mistake” or a failure to ask for help from someone who’s been there before. Whatever the case she might want to add Psalm 23 to that list of suggestions.

Spotlighting Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking

By Brett Murphy-Dawson Special To The Courier

On December 31st, 2013, former President Barak Obama wrote a proclamation in January 2014, declaring it as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. The month would end on a celebratory note of National Freedom Day, February 1. In his formal proclamation, the former president stated the following: “This month, I call on every nation, every community, and every individual to fight human trafficking wherever it exists. Let us declare as one that slavery has no place in our world, and let us finally restore to all people the most basic rights of freedom, dignity, and justice.”

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, “Human trafficking, also known as trafficking in persons or modern-day slavery, is a crime that involves compelling or coercing a person to provide labor or services, or to engage in commercial sex acts. The coercion can be subtle or overt, physical or psychological. Exploitation of a minor for commercial sex is human trafficking, regardless of whether any form of force, fraud, or coercion was used”. Essentially, engaging a child in any form of a sex act or adult entertainment performance in exchange for anything of value, even food, is sexual exploitation and human trafficking. Currently, human trafficking is the second largest criminal enterprise and quickly surpassing the drug trade as it is increasingly more lucrative to sell a child for sex.

In order to truly comprehend the gravity of this prevention month, it is important to look at the state of our children affected by commercial sexual exploitation. As a child psychiatrist who is also a parent, there is nothing more horrific than the crime of Commercial

Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC), which is also known as Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (DMST). It is estimated that 300,000 children are trafficked per year in the United States. Of children being trafficked, 89% have current or prior contact with the foster care system. In addition,1.3 million are homeless which tends to be a factor for sexual exploitation of boys. Also, one third of runaways are approached within 48 hours by traffickers. Moreover, the average age of a child being trafficked is 14 years old in Georgia, however it is as young as 11 years old on a national level. Unfortunately, more than 90% of children who are being trafficked were previously sexually abused. Since the majority of children are sexually abused by someone they know and trust, they seek love and attention from anyone who will give it to them. This makes the grooming process of the trafficker that much easier, and the cycle of victimization repeats itself horrifically. Not only is DMST a national issue, it is a state issue. At least 7,200 men purchase a trafficked child for sex per month in Georgia. In 2016 alone, over 400 children were identified in Georgia as victims of sex trafficking although many go under the radar. It is also significant to note that of the children identified in our state, 89 % had current or prior foster care involvement and they came from 102 of the 159 counties. This issue is a widespread problem that is not secluded to Atlanta. We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge that DMST is occuring within the city of Columbus as well. In 2017, over 400 children were in foster care in Muscogee county, whereas there were less than 100 foster families to place them locally. The foster care crisis in our city makes such children extremely vulnerable to being sexually exploited. The over 300 children who need foster placements likely get placed outside of our county, retraumatizing them as they are removed from their schools, extended family, churches, and support network.

Additionally, Hispanic and African American girls are disproportionately represented in DMST and especially vulnerable to sexual abuse.

The sequelae of being trafficked multiple times a day for months on end is

staggering. Once a child is trafficked, their life expectancy is reduced remarkably to only seven years. They suffer from sexual assaults, physical violence, poor nutrition, STD’s/AIDS, overdose, or suicide. The psychological impact is equally devastating, including PTSD, depression, trauma bonds with the trafficker, substance abuse, anxiety, and shame. Despite the bleak picture, there is a ray of hope on the horizon. Since 2014, Micah’s Promise has been leading the community in education and advocacy of stolen childhoods from DMST under the guidance of director, Ms. Bobbi Starr. Through the grace of God, Ms. Starr and her board are now in the Capitol Campaign stage of raising the necessary funds to build a therapeutic treatment facility which will provide daily, long term therapy, and maximum watchful oversight (MWO) for girls 12 to 17 who have been victims of DMST. Currently there are only two therapeutic treatment facilities for victims of DMST in the state, with only 31 beds between them. Micah’s Promise is in a mentorship program with Wellspring Living, one of the two facilities, and will utilize their proven model and best practices.

Another aspect of hope is in the form of prevention. By educating the community on how to prevent child sexual abuse, it will greatly reduce the number of cases of DMST in the future. Building Toward Wellness Community Coalition (BTWCC) collaborates closely with Micah’s Promise as they lead the community in this prevention training. BTWCC, a nonprofit organization started in 1992 by the late Rev Johnny Flakes II to promote wellness in minority communities, has been instrumental in locally promoting the prevention of child sexual abuse since 2013. The program used is called Stewards of Children (SOC) which educates adults on how to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. It is imperative that at least 5% of our adult population in our county become trained in this evidence-based program such that we can normalize the prevention of child sexual abuse. It is noteworthy to acknowledge that in addition to training approximately 800 adults in our county since 2013, BTWCC held its first

bilingual training last week at the Tree of Life Healthcare.

Micah’s Promise and BTWCC will continue educating, collaborating and partnering with law enforcement, child serving organizations and agencies within the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit to fight the issue of DMST and Childhood Sexual Abuse. There are many ways to invest in the lives of children and prevent both sexual abuse and DMST. To learn more or schedule a SOC or DMST training, contact Dr. Brett MurphyDawson or Ms. Bobbi Starr at info@micahspromise.org. The National Human Trafficking Resource Center number is 1 (888) 373-7888 to report any concerns of trafficking as well as to receive extensive information on the national level in English, Spanish or 200 other languages. About The Author Dr. Brett Murphy-Dawson is a double board certified child & adolescent psychiatrist who is a prevention advocate for child sexual abuse in Columbus, GA. Second Chance Recovery

By Attorney Jennifer Dunlap Special To The Courier

Many of you read an article in this publication a few months back when A Second Chance Criminal Record Relief P.C. was just getting started in this area and I had just made my exit from the District Attorney's Office after 8 years. Since that time, through that article, facebook, radio, television, speaking engagements, and word of mouth, many of you have reached out to me at my Columbus office. I always knew there was a need in this community for assistance with criminal record related issues, but I never imagined that the need was so great. In addition to using new laws to go back and retroactively alter felony and misdemeanor entries on official background reports, much of what I do has just been to educate. I have reviewed countless criminal background reports and counseled hundreds of citizens on the meaning of entries on their background. Some have believed they were convicted felons and found out through my review that they are actually not. Some have believed they were one time convicted felons, only to find out they had duplicate entries on their record. Some have gotten their felony conviction removed and gone on to obtain gun permits from our Probate Court. Even more have gotten misdemeanor convictions removed and been able to qualify for degrees in the medical field or upper level management jobs. This effort has not been just mine alone. I do want to take the time to thank our District Attorney's Office here in the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit under DA Julia Slater and Chief Assistant DA Alonza Whitaker, our Solicitor General Suzanne Goddard, the District Attorney

of Sumpter County Plez Hardin, and Pete Skandalakis District Attorney of the Coweta Circuit. Huge thanks to our Clerk of Superior and State Court Ann Hardeman and her entire staff. Many thanks to each and every one of our Superior Court Judges Hon. Chief Judge Gil McBride, the Hon. Judge Jordan, the Hon. Judge Peters, the Hon. Judge Rumer, the Hon. Judge Smith, the Hon. Judge Gottfried, the Hon. Judge Mullins, State Court Judges the Hon. Chief Judge Andy Prather and the Hon. Judge Richardson. These are the people who have shown a commitment to our community and been willing to hear from people who have been overlooked by the system.

We all know that having a criminal record is a major barrier to all kinds of employment. Therefore, removing these barriers serves most importantly to create access to employment for a lot of people in our community that only have one transgression on their record. When people can get a job that provides for their family they are much less likely to continue criminal activity. Our goal at A Second Chance Criminal Records is to put people back to work. It's to free people from the stigma of one mistake. It's to equalize those that pled under the first offenders act to begin with and never had a criminal conviction, with those qualified at the time of their guilty plea, but who were never offered that relief because their attorney didn't remember to ask. It's also to create a place for people to come and find answers about their closed criminal matters for no cost.

While we began in the Columbus area, we are now expanding into the Newnan areas. To reach me call 706-223-5380. My Columbus office address is 1332 Wynnton Road (within the offices of Forrest B. Johnson and Associates) and my Newnan office address is 1973 GA34 Newnan GA 30265.

For more information on the services we offer please visit www.secondchancelaws.com or for educational videos related to criminal records please see my facebook page at Jennifer Dunlap on facebook. Also, I specialize in car accident and slip and fall cases; so don't forget to call me for that as well.

Fifth Annual Chattahoochee Valley College Fair Assists Muscogee County High School Seniors

By Wane A. Hailes The Courier

In less than a year, most of the seniors in Muscogee County will be taking a big step into college.

"Students need to make sure they have the right amount of credits in order to get into a program,” said Muscogee County School Board Member Pat Hugley Green. “If they are going to college, for example, they need to have two years of a foreign language or what they call modern language."

Meeting the graduation criteria is one major hurdle. Another is getting accepted into college, which is a process that needs to start as early as eighth grade, according to Hugley Green. "The target was for 8th grade athletes because what I learned from the athletic director is the parents don't have them on track to get athletic scholarships we've missed opportunities there," Hugley Green said. Hugley Green and her sister-in-law State Representative Carolyn Hugley are teaming up to host their fifth Chattahoochee Valley College Fair this Saturday.

"We have a session for parents, a session on admissions, a session on scholarships and then they go and visit with the various colleges,” Hugley said. “So we want to talk with them about preparing for the college experience."

Four year and two year colleges will be on hand for the Chattahoochee College Fair on Saturday February 24, 2018 at Carver High School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

ENGLISH Simple Ways of Savings - Part I Having a savings account would help you with unexpected expenses or for a specific goal. Expect the unexpected or plan for a large expense. Would you not prefer to have a savings account at hand than be surprised by a large, unexpected expense or not have sufficient funds for a specific payment? Here are some simple budgeting tips that may help you reach your goals: 1. Collect change Make a change in your budgeting habits and start penny pinching. Missed penny or dime, are actually missed opportunities to build an emergency fund. 2. Shave the paycheck Most of us don’t have the luxury of drawing off paycheck funds to an emergency account, but saving for a tragedy

can be cheaper than you might expect. If you save $20 a week — the cost of a modest meal out — you would save over $1,000 in a year. 3. Eat at home The average meal out costs around $12, whereas the cost of a meal at home, designed to feed multiple people or one person multiple times, averages around $2. While eating out might be more convenient or fun, you stand to deposit $10 a meal into an emergency account. 4. Get a gig It has never been easier to earn supplemental income. If you have a skill there is probably a way to profit off it. Whether you freelance write, ad-hoc design or drive for rideshare, chances are there is a way to bankroll savings outside of a 9-5 structure. 5. Save tax refunds Tax season is upon us, which for many means upwards of $1,000 in tax refunds. It’s natural to receive this check and see dollar signs, but fight back and think about depositing your tax return into a savings account. Responsible budgeting isn’t always fun, but you will thank yourself later in achieving a spe-

cific goal or in an event of an emergency. 6. Reduce monthly expenses At one point, the beauty magazine or mechanics subscription service seemed like a good idea. Some of your monthly subscription services might seem frivolous. Review your subscriptions and cut back where you can by deciding what you can easily live without. Stay tune to Simple Ways of Savings - Part II for more tips on how saving can be beneficial for you and your family. Son Of Cuban and Mexican Immigrants, Danny Arencibia, Running For Mayor Por Wane Hailes Eco Latino

ENGLISH Now is the time for leadership that has its foundations built on taking on our city's toughest challenges and conquering them. As the former owner and operator of Gallery13, an all-ages youth venue, in ministry and outreach, as a finance manager at one our most successful local dealerships: I have a history of fighting uphill battles that end in positive change. I am very proud to be the son of immigrants, and to be born here in the United States. My father came from Cuba and my mother from Mexico. My parents have shown me what true hard work can accomplish. I am proud of my heritage and proud to be part of a city that is beginning to learn to embrace its diversity. I have been a proud Columbus resident for 20 years. I've worn out the soles of more than one pair of shoes walking the beautiful streets of Uptown. I am a deeply involved community servant who wants to continue to serve his city. In my work here in Columbus I have learned that what matters is not your name, the color of your skin, or the promises you make…. but what you get done. Diving into serving this community and standing side by side with citizens from all walks of life is where I learned that people get more done when they work together. It is when we stand united in a new path, that we will stand strong in taking on tough issues. It is time to move our community forward and get this city back on track. We need to balance our city budget and foster a pro-business environment in order to grow our economy and create jobs. We need to take a strong stance on crime; all while unifying our citizens in a genuine and wholehearted sense of community.
