NAACP Elections According to the street committee the local branch of the NAACP held elections for their new officers on Saturday November 12, 2016 at the Columbus P u b l i c L i b r a r y. Tonza Thomas was re-elected by a vote of 32 to 13. It is obvious to the street committee that this embarrassing low voter turnout is emblematic of a larger problem associated with the organization. Someone Please Schedule An MRI For Councilor Glen Davis After witnessing his erratic behavior during the last council meeting the street

The Street Committee

committee wonders if city councilor Glen Davis may have been “beaned” one to many times during his 9 year career playing Major League baseball. Davis was the most vocal of the two dissenting votes. His statement suggesting that city councilors were not given adequate notice regarding information concerning the referendum on casino gambling leads the street committee to believe that it might be possible he may just now be feeling the effects of his 1990 season opener when Cincinnati Reds pitchers hit him with pitches in three of his six plate appearances. Thank the Lord for councilor Judy

Thomas who aptly came to the defense of City manager Isaiah Hugley. She reminded Davis that not only had it been on the agenda for over a month but also Hugley had personally informed and discussed the referendum with councilors. Nice try Glen. Perhaps an MRI would be appropriate at this time. In Case You Missed It The street committee notes that with all of the attention focused on the casino gambling referendum citizens missed the resolution presented to city council members requesting that the Georgia General assembly consider passage of statewide general legislation regarding law enforcement agencies. It included information on fatal officer involved shootings. More to come next issue.

A VIEW FROM A PEW

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 24, 2016

My Dear Black Business Owners: available? Contrary to what you may think some of us do wash our hands.

I’m going to need you to finish the job I hired you to do. If you tell me you will have the job completed in 48 hours then I am going to expect it in 48 hours not 48 days. It’s been two months and the job still isn’t done. You worked on it for three good days and now I haven’t seen hide nor tail of you since I gave you the deposit you requested. I’m going to need you and your employees to work on your customer service skills. Is it too much to ask to be greeted with a smile and a hello how may I help you? “Yo’ dude what you want” is not how I want to be greeted when I come in your place of business.

I understand the importance of supporting my own; of buying from someone who looks like me; of making sure “our” monies stay in our community. I realize if we, as a community, support you with our dollars it allows you the opportunity to generate the revenue to eventually employ people from our community.

I for one understand the challenges you face as a Black Business owner. I get it, you need my dollars for your business to survive and continue providing the services that we need. Truth be told I want to sup-

port you. As a matter of fact I would be more than happy to patronize your business but first there are a few things I am going to need.

I’m going to need you to be open for business when the sign on your door says you are going to be open. Your sign says your hours of operation are from nine to five, well it’s 10:15 am and I can’t get in. Yesterday there was a sign on the door saying gone to lunch, be back at 1, well damn it was four o’clock then. How can I support you if you are never open when I need you?

I’m going to need you to clean

up your place of business, your establishment. Can you work a broom, or a vacuum cleaner now and again? Can a brother get some Pledge and a dust cloth on a table or chair once in a while? I had lunch at your place last week, went back to work and my staff was looking at me like I was a dust buster with all of the dirt I had on the seat of my pants.

How about some soap and hot water in a bucket with a mop on your floors? And please, please, please clean your nasty #$$ bathroom. Speaking of the rest room can you make sure there is adequate toilet paper and paper towels with soap

Speaking of customer service, I’m going to need you to tell your little employees that when I come into your place they need to stop talking to their boyfriends or girlfriends on the phone and greet me accordingly. If they are talking to another customer on the phone then they need to at least acknowledge my presence and assure me they will be with me shortly.

I’m going to need you to adhere to some proper phone etiquette. If I call your business please, number 1): answer your phone by the third ring, number 2): when you or your employee answers the phone, “Who dis is? Is not an appropriate greeting 3): if I leave a message asking for a return phone call please have the decency to call me back in a timely manner. I’m going to need you to have what I need, when I need it. What does that mean? That means, as an example, if your business is barbecue, fish,

3

chicken, or whatever I need you to have it when I arrive. When my mouth is watering for a ½ rack of ribs and cole slaw or a fish sandwich I don’t need you telling me you are out of the product because the truck hasn’t arrived yet. Let me give you another scenario. If all you do is serve chicken and it’s Friday night, dinner time, I’m tired, just got off work, kids are getting on my nerves and I stop by your place and you tell me I’m going to have to wait twenty minutes for a breast and a wing, I am going to be upset. There is no excuse for that. You need to take a note from the Boy Scouts and be prepared.

I’m going to need you to get me out of your salon in a timely manner. I’ve been here for four hours and all I need is a wash and set. I have sat through your lunch break, four coffee breaks; two phone breaks with your “Boo” and three cigarette breaks. Can I get a break and get up out of here? Finally, if you want me to support your business then I’m going to need you to treat me like you want my business. I’m going to need you to stop expecting me to spend my dollars with you and start respecting me when I spend my dollars with you.

I’m going to need you, instead of bitchin’ and moanin’ about how black folks would rather patronize the “other man” as opposed to you, the “brother man” and perhaps adopt some of the business practices of the “other man”. I am a firm believer that if we knew better we would do better. Now that you know, what are you going to do?

EXTRAORDINARY INTENTIONS By Jonathan “Bam” Rivers

Have a Sense of Urgency

Why put off until tomorrow, what we can accomplish today? This is a question that permeates throughout any race, culture, sex or background. The desire to procrastinate has taken over our better judgment of jumping on the opportunity now! I know what you're thinking, I will go back to school when the time is right. Once I get my money in line, I will move forward and start my own business. When I don't have any more issues, I will follow my dreams. While these responses may seem as if you want to have things in order before you jump, it's the exact opposite. Listen

EMPOWER - INSPIRE - INFORM

to me; there will never be a perfect time to do anything! If you want to be successful, you will need to leap, jump, run and pounce on your ambitions now because tomorrow isn't promised. Eric Thomas once said he wanted to make sure he took advantage of the opportunity of his lifetime in the lifetime of his opportunity. We must not let fear paralyze our minds and hearts, yet we must walk in faith and push through when times are hard. Once you make your move in life, doors will begin to open. I currently run my own motivational speaking business, co-host a college football television show and write the "Extraordinary Intentions" column for the Courier newspaper; none of the scenarios or opportunities were given to me. I had to take advantage of my skills, desire and passion to capture my greatness. Winners do not wait for opportunities, opportunities wait for winners! Do not be a spectator in life, be a participator because once you start chasing your dreams, you will ultimately experience the joy of catching them! Black America’s Resilience Will Keep Us Struggling Forward

By Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. President and CEO of the NNPA Nobody said that the road to freedom, justice and equality would be easy. In the wake of the results of the national elections across the United States, it is crystal clear that the aspirations, hopes and dreams of 47 million Black Americans are neither in vain or hopeless. We have been disappointed before. We have been joyous before. But today we are all called to be vigilant, persistent and resilient. As one of our sacred freedom songs refrains in an upbeat, “Woke up this morning with my mind stayed on freedom…ain’t gonna let nobody turn us around…Got a keep my mind, spirit

and soul focused on freedom…no matter what happens…we gonna keep on marching…we gonna keep on shouting…we gonna keep on marching down freedom’s road.”

You have heard me affirm before within the printed and digital contours of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) that our collective sense of righteous optimism and moral imperatives were really never based exclusively on one event or one defeat or even one victory. Ours is a long protracted struggle for freedom and equality.

Our brother freedom fighter, writer and author, James Baldwin, once told me, “We have to look at the future without a moment to blink, with our heads unbowed with a transcendent determination always to rise above the cynicism of the day and never let giving-in

DEAR JOHN JANEE’

HI JANEE’ I’ve been dating two guys for about a year now. It’s been pretty easy going so far and the best thing its been drama free. I don’t even think they suspect there is someone else, I honestly don’t care I’m getting what I need from both. If I had to choose I don’t think I could or would even want to, both have good and bad qualities. The good in one and the good in the other make the perfect guy. My problem is I recently met a guy that has peaked my interest. He’s 8 years younger than me and is full of life and I love that. It’s so cliche to say but he makes me feel young again. I want him on the team...Lol but 3 guys may be too much, what do you think? Thanks,

3 May Be a Crowd to wrong creep into our souls…for nobody knows or even cares about our suffering if we ever stoop to be silent or indifferent after the bloody lash of history has once again hit out bare backs.”

On election night, November 8, 2016, the entire world waited for the election results into the wee hours of the next morning. Black Republicans were overjoyed and repurposed. Black Democrats were dismayed and dis appointed. Black Independents were challenged and confused. But interestingly some of our elders as well as many of our young activists that night and morning gained renewed strength to fight on for another day and era of progress.

November 24, 2016

3MBAC,

First, do you live in Columbus, because I’m trying to figure out how you’re able to date 2 guys in this city and not get caught up?? Second, I recently read an article where a woman in China convinced her “20 boyfriends” to buy her a new IPhone 7; she sold them and used the $18,000 profit for a down payment on a new house. So hey if she can handle 20 I’m sure you can handle 3!! No on a serious note I think you may be playing with fire dating the 2 guys, especially if they are not aware and think you are only dating them exclusively. If you add a 3rd guy in the mix it’s definitely going to be too much. When feelings and egos are hurt things can take a drastic sometimes dangerous turn. My advice to you is to be open with ALL OF THEM and go from there. You never know they may be okay with this arrangement. Also I’m not sure what you’re looking for in a man but know the odds of you getting EVERYTHING you want in one man is slim BUT that’s okay. Find that one man that has most of the qualities you’re looking for and work to build something with him. Don’t rush it take your time, I’m sure when you meet him you’ll know ☺ until then have fun, be safe AND honest!!! Janee’ P.S. Be sure to invite me to the wedding if you meet the one J. You can email your questions to DearJRenee@gmail.com

We will continue to pick up our pens to write and speak truth to power. We will continue to publish in the grand tradition of motivating and informing the masses to be ever aware of what’s happening now. Every day brings teachable moments and lessons. The National Black Voter Poll, done by Howard University’s interdisciplinary group of faculty and student scholars and the NNPA turned out to be the most accurate when it came to the Black American vote across America. Voting in our communities is not just a right; it is a historic and contemporary responsibility. As we prepare to enter 2017 with a new political regime in the White House, each of us should ask, “What can I do to help improve

The Wright Time...Wright Choice...Wright Vote...The Wright Thing To Do

By Wane A. Hailes The Courier

It was a proud moment for any African American who was fortunate to be in Tuesday night’s city council meeting. The evening was an exercise in diplomacy, democracy and statesmanship. On the agenda was a referendum asking council members to support a constitutional amendment that would allow the citizens of Muscogee County the opportunity to vote whether to legalize casino gambling in Georgia.

Five individuals addressed the council in support of the referendum. They were articulate, they were factual, they were passionate and they were succinct.

First to address the council was Rev. Ralph Huling, President of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance. His words were cautious but clear regarding what he was advocating for. “Regardless where you stand on the issue I’m here because I believe people should have a choice. Citizens of Muscogee County deserve a vote.”

Up next were the Millenials. Attorney Teddy Reese said, “I’m not here asking that anyone endorse any gaming in Columbus. The question on the table today is can we get our local city officials to say to the state of Georgia, let the people vote. Make sure individual voices are heard. Let people speak for themselves.”

Next to the podium was Attorney Stacey Jackson, who noted that “…people are the ultimate authority and source of the authority of government and the pow-

er of that government is based on the consent of the people. With free elections there is civil participation and civic participation and one basic fundamental principle of that participation is the right to vote.”

Bob Wright’s niece, Attorney Katonga Wright addressing the council invoked president Franklin Delano Roosevelt with his quote stating, “Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.” “That is why we are here today, said Wright. We are exercising our right to educate the citizens, the right to continue the conversation and the right for this particular amendment to go on the ballot so the citizens of Muscogee County can inform you whether they want to legalize casino gambling in Georgia.

But it was Robert L. “Bob” Wright, Jr., local businessman, philanthropist and powerbroker who, “turned the tide”, and eased the minds of his critics.

While those before him, the pastor and the Milleniels, gave a vision of their hope for the future Bob reminded those sitting in the council chamber of his service to this community as a council member locally and his service nationally on the boards of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. He spoke with passion and compassion of his love for his community along with his vision of providing a solution to the economic

development of South Columbus by providing between 500-1000 jobs to the community he grew up in and which provided him the foundation for the success he has achieved throughout his lifetime. He assured those members of the Arts community, Norman Easterbrook with he Rivercenter and Paul Pierce with The Springer Opera House he was willing to meet with them to make sure any

scheduling on their part would not be compromised or impeded upon.

Once Wright finished speaking and after some discussion, the referendum passed 7 votes to 2.

This is just the first hurdle of a process that is at least three years down the road. What it says, however, is that at least the city councilors are willing to listen and, “Do The Wright Thing!”

I’M JUST SAYING...

because of changes, and since you’ve been unemployed, the game changed even more. Technology has reduced the number of workers required to do your jobs. Plus, shareholders demand that more be done with less. And one last thing, when is Donald moving his manufacturing and production sites back to this country?)

White women, what have you done?

By Kaffie Sledge Special Contributor To The Courier

Did Hillary Clinton try to take your man? Was she going to show up at your house on Thanksgiving and stir up some family mess?

What, what, what did she do to you that would make you let snake oil salesman Donald Trump con you out of voting for her? For 30 years, Hillary worked on behalf of women and children. Donald was working on behalf of himself – which may be OK for a businessman, but didn’t prepare him to run this country. All of you who thought Bill Cosby should be executed without a trial – because “all those women couldn’t be lying” – simply ignored old Grab-em-by-the *uss* Donald’s acknowledgement and track record, and catapulted him to victory.

Even with all this, I am still hung up on the fact that so many women let some man in a no-style red cap talk them out of voting for the woman who was light years more qualified. What man can we think of who would let a woman talk him out of supporting another man?

Some female Trum-peteers, however, don’t realize the one-night stand is over. You’ve been played. The smooth talker has had his way with you, and you won’t get a text or a call.

(And while we’re talking about being played, let’s look at all the Worker Bees who believe Donald will bring back their old jobs. First, you lost your jobs

Though white women were the Trump cards of this election, some Others were pleased to tell us they voted for Donald because they want “change.” I’ve heard this from some of Donald’s African American Trum-peteers: “It’s time for a change. We need a change.” It seems they have forgotten that Washington Republicans vowed to shut down President Obama. In order to shaft the president, they shafted this entire country. Perhaps you were looking for change in the wrong places. But you did get change, however.

The morning after the election, a black Columbus man on his way to work, held the door open for a white woman at a gas station. She said, “Thank you.”

The white man behind her said, “What are you thanking that N-word for?” “. . . And it wasn’t just Donald Trump who won last night—it was his supporters too,” Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin wrote in Vanity Fair. “The Klan won last night. White nationalists. Sexists, racists and buffoons. Angry young white men who think rap music and Cinco de Mayo are a threat to their way of life (or are the reason for their way of life) have been given cause to celebrate. . . . Abject dumbness was glamorized as being “the fresh voice of an outsider” who’s going to “shake things up.” (Did anyone bother to ask how? Is he going to re-arrange the chairs in the Roosevelt Room?) For the next four years, the President of the United States, the same office held by Washington and Jefferson, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, F.D.R., J.F.K. and Barack Obama, will be held by a man-boy who’ll spend his hours exacting Twitter vengeance against all who criticize him (and those numbers will be legion). We’ve embarrassed ourselves in front of our children and the world. . . .”

November 24, 2016 “Hillary is a liar,” many of you kept saying each time a TV camera was rolling or a microphone came near your lips. What about that Donald and his fraudulent Trump University? He certainly lied to those students. So, just keep an eye on some of those campaign promises. He’s already backtracking on Obamacare. Will Hillary go to jail? We know that’s what you haters want.

Lots of women call Hillary the B-word. But remember the saying, “Sometimes being a ‘B’ is all a woman has.” And many of us can attest to that. She deserved votes for being that qualified B who could handle the sexists who rule Washington and want to set women back. Any woman who couldn’t acknowledge Hillary for that . . . is herself a trifling B. Contact Kaffie Sledge ksledge@springmail.com.

Diabetes” – coordinated and arranged this diabetes initiative between NBA Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. According to Williams, as they look to the future, “We want to continue to recognize, honor and mentor youth in our community. We would also like to grow

and develop the television component of our business into a nationally syndicated program.” Jones added, “Our goal is to be the “go to” company in the sports marketing industry in our community and across the southeast region of the United States. And of course playing a role in making our city a great place to live.”

Dale Williams

Dale was a multi-sports star who graduated from Hardaway High School (1977) in Columbus, GA. The Citadel offered him a four year football scholarship to play defensive back in that same year. He was recruited by Frank Beamer, former coach at the Citadel and current head coach at Virginia Tech. Dale started as cornerback his freshman year at the Citadel led by Head Coach Bobby Ross. Dale left the Citadel after a successful first year to walk on at the University of Georgia, led by legendary coach, Vince Dooley. Dale was awarded a football scholarship by Dooley after a dynamic spring in 1978. He went on to become a two year starter at cornerback for the Georgia Dawgs. He played in two Sugar Bowls (1981-81), which included the 1980 NCAA Football National Championship. Dale was selected by the Denver Gold for the USFL in 1982.

Tashema Johnson..The Superwoman Behind Supershop Entertainment

By Wane A. Hailes Special To The Courier

He was one of the founders of the original “Super Shop Boyz” and made a name for himself and his “crew” with his weekly Hip Hop radio show on FOXIE 105. J.B. Johnson also had a reputation as being one of the best hosts at clubs and parties around the tri-city.

Along the way J.B. became synonymous with bringing top national recording artists to Columbus as a concert promoter with his company, “Supershop Entertainment”. That all appeared to come crashing down on Friday February 19th with his unexpected passing. Instead, after taking little time to mourn, his soul mate and wife, Tashema Johnson set out to continue his legacy. “Through our many conversations I knew his ambition and how important his desire was to give back to the community. It is because of this and how much he was loved by this community I am motivated to continue to build upon what he started. So I am dedicated, in his honor to continue offering quality entertainment to Columbus, Ft. Benning and Phenix City. That is why, once again, on January 1st we are kicking off the New Year with a concert headlined by the last artist he promoted one year ago on the same day, national recording artist Anthony Hamilton.”

In addition to Supershop Entertainment Tashema, a former Senior Program Analyst with TSYS, is the CEO and founder of Purpose & Passion Salon Bazaar and a realtor.

3 formas sencillas de ahorrar tiempo y dinero durante las fiestas

Jueves 24 de Noviembre 2016

Se Están Aceptando Nominaciones Para Los 25 Hispanos Más Influyentes En Columbus, Ft. Benning & Phenix City Now Accepting Nominations For The 25 Most Influential Hispanics In Columbus, Ft. Benning & Phenix City

Fill Out The Following Form And Mail To: The Courier Eco Latino Newspaper P.O.
