Response To A View From A Pew "Our Local NAACP Is In Desperate Need Of An Enema” According to the street committee there numerous individuals who responded to the Courier president/publishers recent “View From a Pew” commentary, "Our Local NAACP Is In Desperate Need Of An Enema". One of those individuals was Betty A. Campbell Shaw. Here is her response: “While every word spoken here is on point, attendance at one meeting is only a bird's eye view into what has been a painful struggle under a dictatorial local leader that has been rubber stamped by the State leader. Repeated verbal and written cries out to the State and National offices have been met with deaf ears. Undoubtedly there is a

serious problem with Fiduciary responsibility and accountability of the current local administration since day one. I encourage you to talk one-on-one with the" elected"officers and elected at-large members to get a more accurate "state of the NAACP Columbus Georgia Branch." i would also like to add, the community at large must share some responsibility because while there has been financial support of the Freedom Fund Banquets, there has been a detrimental lack of volunteers when it comes to getting the work done. It takes members from all generations to get the work done, and we must respect the gifts and talents of each individual equally. No one is more important than the other on a team. So please do not cast out those who are 50 years of
age and over. We must work together as a village not as warring outsiders. I am available for private discussion.” Positively Phenix City According to the street committee the Phenix city Council reappointed City Manager Wallace Hunter by a 3-2 vote. Speaking on his reappointment Mayor Eddie Lowe noted that Hunter is one of the main reasons Phenix City is moving forward. He cited his body of work, the financial situation that they are in, the fact city is in the best shape in its history. He also spoke of the reserves the city has and the fact that the city’s debt has been reduced. The street committee hopes that with this behind them thay can remain “Positively Phenix City.

The official numbers are not in but the preliminary numbers say we once again surpassed the number of Caucasians casting their ballot in Muscogee County. Can you imagine what would happen if we were to turn those 49,868 registered voters into 49,868 actual votes? Can you imagine the ability we have to elect the candidate of our choice in every citywide election with candidates that look like us and have our best interest at heart? Can you imagine if we could come together and begin planning, strategizing and developing our young future leaders?
Now that the presidential election is over I believe more than ever, the age-old adage, that “all politics is local”. We are living in a time when we as African Americans in Columbus, Georgia have the opportunity to effect a positive change in our community by how we come together politically. As I have said often, “We don’t have to
depend on the race card, if we use our voter registration card.”
Since the year 2009 AfricanAmericans have been the majority demographic in Muscogee County. Today, in 2016, there are 98,885AfricanAmericans living in Columbus, Georgia as opposed to 94,874 Caucasians.
Here are some numbers that should make even the most apathetic African American run and get registered. As of October 11, 2016 here are the number of registered voters in Muscogee County by racial demographics: Black Female: 29,850 Black Male: 20,018 Total: 49,868
The numbers are in our favor. We have heard for years that our vote counts. Well in Muscogee County the numbers prove it. There is no excuse for not being fairly represented politically in our community. It is time that we, as a community come together and elect those individuals who will not be afraid to make decisions with us in mind. We no longer have to be accused of using the race card. In Muscogee County, once again, our card of choice is our voter registration card. We no longer have a reason to sit on the sidelines while others make decisions for us, about us, without us. It is long
past time for us to suit up and get in the game. In the future we are in a position to challenge every At-Large political seat in Muscogee County. To not do so would be a disservice to not only those of us here today but for those who will come after us.
Our numbers sends a message loud and clear that we are a demographic to be recognized and respected and it is time to be treated as such. I’m not talking about voting for a candidate just because he is Black. We need to support the right candidate regardless of their color. We should, however, expect that candidate to do more than only show up at our churches on a Sunday morning during the campaign asking for our vote. We must understand that although we may not have the economic clout in this community, if we show up at the polls like we do for the Tuskegee / Morehouse and Fountain City Classics and stand together, there will be know mistaking the political clout we wield. It’s time to realize the game has changed. We are no longer junior varsity; we are the Varsity team, “first string”. We are in a position to challenge every prime political seat in Muscogee County.
It is obvious, given the numbers, the efforts to register African Americans has been successful. Now we must make sure those same individuals actually goes to the polls.
Read the numbers. Digest the numbers. Trust the numbers. The numbers do not lie. We are the difference.

A Sense of Entitlement
1st Team All Bi-City, 1st Team All Area, All-State Honorable Mention; these were the accolades I earned as a senior football player. As a result, I was convinced any college team would be crazy not to want me. I received letters from Auburn, Clemson, GA Southern and many others while mulling over my college decisions. Ultimately, I decided to walk on at Auburn and create a name for myself. When the time came to work and do just that, I chose to complain about the lack of reps I was receiving and gripe that I wasn't being given a fair shake. After leaving the team with the desire to

transfer for a better opportunity, I realized I was the one not giving myself the opportunity.
A blank piece of paper illustrates what we are entitled to in life, NOTHING! There will never come a time when you can accomplish your dreams or goals without giving max effort and going all in. It is imperative to develop yourself daily because what was accomplished yesterday, may not be sufficient for what is needed today. A sense of entitlement will create a mindset and attitude of contentment and laziness, which will ultimately lead to your personal or professional downfall. Bear Bryant, former coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team once said, "It's not the will to win that separates the great ones, it's the will to prepare to win." Are you prepared to be better than you were the day before? Are you prepared to live a purpose driven life and shake the mentality of being given your dreams, rather than taking them? If you are prepared to be great, then greatness is prepared for you. A graduate of Shaw High School and Auburn University Jonathan Rivers is a motivational speaker and TV host. HEY SHERRY I have to laugh at, “it’s a military town you’re sure to find a man”, because that’s the same thing that was said to me when I moved here a year ago….Lol. Anyhoo as someone who has tried online dating I say GO FOR IT. What do you have to lose? I’ve tried several different sites and my overall experience was great, if anything you meet some interesting people. Now I do have to warn you to be cautious and please feel out the people you are talking with before meeting up. Make sure you meet in a public place for the first, second and third time, okay maybe even the fourth time. Just have fun and be safe. Don’t put too much pressure on it, go with the flow! Janee’ P.S. Give The People The Right To Vote
By Wane A. Hailes Special To The Courier
Dear Council Members: This year, as in years past, you have in your possession a list of issues important to the citizens of Columbus that requires action by the Local Legislative Delegation. We understand that once that list is approved a meeting will be held with the Delegation to explain the rationale behind these issues and to solicit their support. That Hometown Connection and Legislative Agenda meeting is scheduled for November 17, 2016. One of those issues currently on the list is the Casino Gaming Referendum. The issue, requested by the Mayor Pro tem Evelyn Turner Pugh and Councilor Mimi Woodsen, is requesting the legislative delegation introduce and/or support legislation to authorize
a referendum to allow Georgia citizens to vote as to whether they want to allow casino gaming in Georgia for the purpose of Hope Scholarship funding.
During the last city council meeting it appeared there was some hesitancy by some of you to allow the citizens of Muscogee County to vote on said referendum. The issue before you is not if YOU support casino gaming in Georgia the issue is whether you support the right of the people to decide if THEY want to allow casino gaming in Georgia. I totally understand if you have a personal issue against the referendum but that is not a good enough reason to not allow our citizens to make their own decision.
Do The right thing! Let the people decide.

WHERE A PASSION BECAME A PAYCHECK...RAMONA TERRY, LMT

By Sheryl Ward Special to The Courier
It was 2011 when Ramona came over to my cubicle and stated excitedly that she wanted to become a Licensed Massage Therapist. She was working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia in the Refund Recovery department. Ramona had been with the company for 11 years. A company that offered great pay, benefits and stability. She is a single parent with two children. One was in elementary school and the other was in middle school in 2011. It was inconceivable to any one that she would want to leave her secure and stable nest to venture out and literally reinvent herself.
She enrolled in Miller-Motte’s 18 month Massage Therapy program. So now, here she was a single mother of two, holding a full time position with BCBS of GA, and a full time student at Miller-Motte. Her focus was admirable. She studied hard and graduated. Next step came the ride to Americus, Georgia for the State Boards. Her first testing she came up short by one point. Her second testing she came up short by two points. On our ride for the third testing, I remember she told me a story of a young man who had written a book about determination. His story was that he tried seven times before his passed his college SAT test. I sat next to her thinking to myself this woman has drive and determination like no other. She received her National Certification for Massage Therapy in 2012 on that third

try, and she has not looked back.
She opened her business as a mobile Massage Therapist in 2012. Her tag line was “Have Table will Travel”. And travel she did. She built her business slow and steady. She began to build a reputation from mouth to mouth referrals. It was a year later that opened her brick and mortar studio on Peacock Avenue in Columbus, Georgia.
Her clients increased dramatically. She was now still working full time at BCBS of Georgia and had started working at Massage Envy to ensure that she could finance her “own” studio. Hard work, long hours, determination and the love of helping people experience a quality massage was her routine. The new tag line was now “Calming One Body at a Time”. In 2014, she moved from a one room studio on Peacock Avenue to her current location at 1300 Wynnton Road, Suite 103 (across from the Columbus
Museum). The new studio now had a foyer, receptionist area and three massage rooms, and a nail art station. Again, her clients increased dramatically, and with that came a life changing decision. It was now time to leave her employment at BCBS of Georgia and dedicate all her energy and resources to her business. In May of 2016, a second location on Peacock Avenue for couple massages exclusively was opened. Ramona is licensed in both Georgia and Alabama and has certifications in prenatal, oncology, infant and geriatric massages. The services offered are Swedish, Deep Tissue, Deep Muscle, Sports, Hot Stone, Manual Lymphatic Therapy and Chair Massage. The spa services offered are Sweet Cheeks (therapeutic facial massage with sugar scrub), Sweet Feet (therapeutic foot massage with sugar scrub) and Full Body Scrub. Recently, a nail art station has been included. Her trademark is the Hot Towel Massage. You see Ramon is an outstanding Massage Therapist, because she has such a passion for what she does. Her belief is that every person should be
